A very important running survey.

Like usual, I have some random information for you before we get to the title of the post.

It is quite amazing how a $2.99 pool noodle from the grocery store made Brooke smile for a very long time.  We never made it to the pool to use it but she played with it for most of the day.

IMG 3287

Brooke’s grandma on her dad’s side was in town yesterday so she took us for some ice cream sundaes at Thanksgiving Point.  My philosophy after my divorce has been—>  the more people that love Brooke the better and I really want to support her other relationships.  It’s been really nice to be able to have a good relationship with my ex-in-laws because they are amazing people.

Brooke never even touched the brownie sundae.  All she cared about was the side of sprinkles.

IMG 3308

This (napping in my arms) doesn’t happen much but when it does, I soak it up.

IMG 3299

Mac and cheese was Brooke’s dinner request (with some veggies).  I was going to make a random sweet potato concoction for me but then mac and cheese sounded delicious and so I just ate it right out of the pan.  Sometimes kid food really is my favorite kind of food.

IMG 2074

Turns out when I run my hair looks somewhat like a firework.

IMG 3277

Speaking of fireworks, I am already really looking forward to the 4th of July next weekend.  I am taking Brooke to her first ever Stadium of Fire and Journey will be there performing.  It’s going to be an exciting night.   Anyone else in Utah going to be there?

Out and back at home but on trips (like this week) I like loops to see more! Id probably buy a new running skirt or something else I really don’t need and I’d always choose beach path! And a training plan works better for my personality, most of the time!

I’m going to do your survey on my blog today! And also super jealous of the fireworks because I love Journey…LOVE!

I love how encouraging you are with Brooke’s relationship with her other grandparents, it is such a great way to look at it!

I usually run in capris. I generally prefer point to point or loop courses, I’m not a big fan of out and back. I usually start from my house so I don’t need to carry my key, but I tie it to my shoe if I start from somewhere else.

Happy Friday!

1) Beach path- I love running along the water!

Great that you’re really truly putting your daughter first. So many people lose sight of this when they’re hurt and angry and keen to punish. She will learn a great lesson from you and no doubt be a better person for it (as well as of course benefiting from more ice cream!).

Out and back are my kind of runs :) I even liked them at a race actually.

1. Would you rather run along a beach path or on a mountain trail?
That is a tough one to answer. First thought is beach path but I live in the Coastal Bend of Texas. A mountain trail would be so beautiful and something I do not get to do.
2. If you could choose the flavor of gatorade at your next race’s aid stations, what would it be?
I am a traditional lemon lime fan all the way!
3. If I gave you a $100 gift card to a running store, what would be the first thing that you would purchase with it?
Currently, I would go screeching with excitement to buy the Asics Gel Cumulus 17’s that came out.
4. Do you prefer to follow a training plan or wake up and decide then how far and how fast you want to run?
I am OCD planner type of person is almost all aspects of my life so I started using my BELIEVE training journal this year. I actually got two for Christmas so I am set for 2016 too!
5. Would you rather start your run with the uphill and end on the downhill or start your run with the downhill and end with the uphill?
Start with an uphill and end with a downhill for sure!
6. When you can’t run, what type of cross-training do you choose to do?
The gym I go to has an awesome boot camp instructor as well as a spin instructor so I will drop in when I feel like it.
7. What is your preference—> Out and back, point to point or loop runs?
Point to point, then out and back and then loop.
8. If you could recommend ANY running related item to a new runner, it would be a—>
To go get the correct pair of shoes from the beginning. FleetFeet is great at helping with that!
9. Do you ever see any wild animals while out on your runs?
Not usually but I do get chased by dogs quite frequently.
10. Ever gotten lost while out on a run?
Not yet but I think it might be fun! Maybe when I go visit my sister in Carlsbad, CA I will try it!
11. If you could have one meal waiting and ready for you each time you got home from a run for the next 30 days… what would that meal be?
Nom Nom Paleo’s Crispy chicken, steamed or sautéed veggies, and a sweet potato would just be amazing!
12. Capris or shorts… what do you run in most often?
Capris. I have thunder thighs so shorts just don’t work for this girl!
13. At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go?
It takes me a solid mile before I feel like I am ready to conquer my run.
14. What do you do with your key when you run?
BUY A FORD! That is my only advice if you are a runner. My door has a keypad so I do not ever have to worry about it. Just don’t forget your passcode.
15. If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one what it be?
My first 10K race in San Antonio
16. What type of run is your least favorite type of run?
I just started tempo runs and they are kicking my butt so yeah….right now they kinda suck in my book.
17. What has been your biggest motivation lately to get out the door to get your run on?
That I do not want to stay the same. A body in motion stays in motion and I want to reach my goals.
18. When you go for a run, do you leave right from your front door or do you drive somewhere to start?
It depends on if I am running solo or if I am running with a buddy.
19. When running in daylight—> are sunglasses a must or an annoyance?
A MUST! I love my Costa Del Mars sunglasses. I am usually easy to spot in race photos because I always have them on.
20. When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting?
I have to have a serious pep talk in my head. It is like there are little people bickering about if I should quit or not. It is quite comedic now that I think about it.

I haven’t ran regularly in a few years but this looks fun!

1. Would you rather run along a beach path or on a mountain trail? – I’ve never been anywhere with mountains, but I loooove the beach, so I would probably still choose beach.

2. If you could choose the flavor of gatorade at your next race’s aid stations, what would it be? – Blue. Either light or dark. Both are fab.

3. If I gave you a $100 gift card to a running store, what would be the first thing that you would purchase with it? – At this point, I have an almost-new pair of really nice shoes, but no running clothes anymore, so capris and a tank.

4. Do you prefer to follow a training plan or wake up and decide then how far and how fast you want to run? – Plan

5. Would you rather start your run with the uphill and end on the downhill or start your run with the downhill and end with the uphill? – Downhill at the end! Uphill at the end seems insurmountable.

6. When you can’t run, what type of cross-training do you choose to do? – I love lifting and yoga.

7. What is your preference—> Out and back, point to point or loop runs? – Loop.

8. If you could recommend ANY running related item to a new runner, it would be a—> – Arm band for your iPod/key/etc.

9. Do you ever see any wild animals while out on your runs? – I used to always see deer.

10. Ever gotten lost while out on a run? – Nope, but I’m not very adventurous, so I don’t go anywhere I don’t know.

11. If you could have one meal waiting and ready for you each time you got home from a run for the next 30 days… what would that meal be? – Not usually, and I can’t remember the last time I had it, but spaghetti with marinara sounds amazing right now.

12. Capris or shorts… what do you run in most often? – Capris! No chub rub.

13. At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go? – Never? lol.

14. What do you do with your key when you run? – Arm band or tie to my shoe.

15. If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one what it be? – My very first 5k because it was very emotional for me, or the one I did last weekend, The Rhino Challenge, because it was SO fun. Obstacles? Yes, please!

16. What type of run is your least favorite type of run? – I don’t venture out. I feel accomplished if my feet keep moving.

17. What has been your biggest motivation lately to get out the door to get your run on? – Unfortunately, my busy schedule/two year old have been motivation not to lately.

18. When you go for a run, do you leave right from your front door or do you drive somewhere to start? – From my door, generally.

19. When running in daylight—> are sunglasses a must or an annoyance? – Both, equally.

20. When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting? – Honestly? I’m the most out of shape right now I’ve ever been, and this last weekend’s race was so fun, but TORTURE. To get me through the running parts (the obstacles were fun!) I stole your motto: I can do hard things. I repeated that to myself 100x!

I would run on a mountain trail, along a creek, in my new Brooks Glycerin that I purchased with my $100 gift card. This run would begin with a gradual uphill and loop around to end with a descent, as scheduled on my training plan (which I much prefer to having no plan at all). When finished, I would love to have a smoothie waiting for me because I typically can’t eat a lot immediately after I finish running.

My advice to all new runners would be to get a good pair of running shoes that are fitted to your feet and body mechanics.

Lately, I feel like my biggest motivation to run has been the way it makes me feel mentally and emotionally. I am now in my third trimester of pregnancy and even though I have slowed down a lot and can only run 3-6 miles a few times a week, every run matters a lot to me and keeps me in good spirits.

1. Would you rather run along a beach path or on a mountain trail?
Beach path

New tanks, all mine are pretty beat up these days.

Training plan for sure. I’ve been so lost since the beginning of June. Luckily training starts next week!!

5. Would you rather start your run with the uphill and end on the downhill or start your run with the downhill and end with the uphill?
End with the uphill. It’s basically what I do for every run anyway!

6. When you can’t run, what type of cross-training do you choose to do?
Bluck. Pilates I guess?

7. What is your preference—> Out and back, point to point or loop runs?
Point to point!

8. If you could recommend ANY running related item to a new runner, it would be a—The moving comfort Fiona sports bra. It’s the best.

9. Do you ever see any wild animals while out on your runs?
The last “wild animal” I saw was a red-winged black bird and it attacked me (it pecked my head!) for getting too close to it’s nest. Going to stick to city running for a while I think :)

10. Ever gotten lost while out on a run?
Yes, a hundred times.

11. If you could have one meal waiting and ready for you each time you got home from a run for the next 30 days… what would that meal be?
The sweet potato sandwich with bacon that I’ve raved about on this blog before!

7. I love point-to-point routes for races or loop runs for training (shorter)
8. A good pair of shoes.

10. Yes, and it ended up being the longest run of my life. It was terrible because I ended up having to run up a mountain hill.. twice. (15 miles)
11. Watermelon. I cannot stomach food after runs AT ALL. After I cool down, though, I think I’d go with a fruit salad with buffalo chicken pizza w/blue cheese.

This is super fun on a slow Friday at work!

1. Would you rather run along a beach path or on a mountain trail?
Run on beach path, hike on mountain trail (I already broke the rules here)

2. If you could choose the flavor of gatorade at your next race’s aid stations, what would it be?
I would not choose, I prefer Powerade Zero in Strawberry!

3. If I gave you a $100 gift card to a running store, what would be the first thing that you would purchase with it?
New Brooks! It’s time.

4. Do you prefer to follow a training plan or wake up and decide then how far and how fast you want to run?
Wake up and decide. I sometimes get resentful of my plan, especially if I am “not feeling it.” I LOVE running and never want to resent it because I feel like I HAVE to do it.

5. Would you rather start your run with the uphill and end on the downhill or start your run with the downhill and end with the uphill?
Uphill and end on downhill. During some runs, I crave that downhill to help reenergize.

6. When you can’t run, what type of cross-training do you choose to do?
Spin!

7. What is your preference—> Out and back, point to point or loop runs?
Depends on the day, hard to choose. I think out and back because I like being able to use familiar landmarks to know where I am and how far I’ve gone.

8. If you could recommend ANY running related item to a new runner, it would be a—>
A really great pair of shoes that they were personally fitted for. After a few years of running in whatever was in expensive (still quality, yet I was more focused on price,) I realized how important “good for you” shoes are.

9. Do you ever see any wild animals while out on your runs?
Mostly geese, squirrels, but never anything cool like a moose or deer or anything.

10. Ever gotten lost while out on a run?
Fortunately, no! Have definitely taken turns that I didn’t plan on taking for that particular route, but I have always known where I am.

11. If you could have one meal waiting and ready for you each time you got home from a run for the next 30 days… what would that meal be?
Tex-mex sweet potatoes. Hel-lo.

12. Capris or shorts… what do you run in most often?
Capris! I wish I felt more comfortable running in shorts. My legs would thank me.

13. At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go?
I’d say mile 2 or 3 is when I really feel like I hit my stride. That first mile is always so defeating sometimes and takes A LOT of self-talk and mental effort to remind myself that this always happens during a run, and once I hit at least the first mile, it WILL get better.

14. What do you do with your key when you run?
Slip it in my arm band or put it in my little waist pouch.

15. If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one what it be?
My first half marathon. It was by the beach, fast and flat, and it was my PR. I haven’t been able to hit that time since!

16. What type of run is your least favorite type of run?
Hill work. Love/hate.

17. What has been your biggest motivation lately to get out the door to get your run on?
I am finally happy with what I see in the mirror, and I know it is because I have been treating my body better than I have been for the past little while. So knowing that I can have some “me time,” be able to decompress, all while making a healthy choice is motivation enough for me. Also, I just did my 4th half marathon, and after a bit of a run break, I am so motivated to get back out there again!

18. When you go for a run, do you leave right from your front door or do you drive somewhere to start?
Front door unless I am meeting friends!

19. When running in daylight—> are sunglasses a must or an annoyance?
If I remember them, a must.

20. When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting?
See #17. Also, cookies.

16. Speed work. It scares me but I need to get over it and do more!

17. Last year it was my wedding, now it’s maintaining fitness for races. My goal is get a sub 1:45 1/2.

20. Got to get back home or to the car somehow. So continuing running will only get me there faster!

4. Do you prefer to follow a training plan or wake up and decide then how far and how fast you want to run? I like having an idea the night before, but once I get started I end up going by feel. It’s a bit whimsical :)

5. Start uphill! I’m a fan of rewards at the end.

9. Do you ever see any wild animals while out on your runs? All the time- mainly deer and rabbits, a few weeks ago I saw a fox in the middle of carrying off on of my neighbor’s chickens :( OH, and I can’t forget the bright orange salamander.

10. Yes! My “best” getting lost happened running in Acadia National Park before work one morning. A 6 mile run turned into a 16 mile run and I was a tad bit late…

13. At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go? Usually around mile 2

14. What do you do with your key when you run? Sports bra. Totally have the chest of a 12 y/o, so my sports bra functions as a kangaroo pouch.

15. If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one what it be? MDI Marathon or UMaine Marathon- both were great days race-wise (PR-ed at each and felt great), and received a lot of support from family and friends at each. So many good vibes!

17. What has been your biggest motivation lately to get out the door to get your run on? Had a soul crushing race in May, and decided to do another marathon 5 weeks away. 11. Since it’s hot right now, I would want a smoothie of banana, orange, pineapple, spinach, protein powder, soymilk, and lots of ice.
12. Capris actually. I do most of my runs in the every early morning so there is more of the year that is chilly capri weather than shorts weather.
13. Usually about a mile in.
14. Leave it at home.
15. Other Half Marathon in Moab, UT from October 2013. My PR for that distance and I think it’s the most beautiful course in the world.
16. Runs 10 miles and over. I’ve done 6 half marathons but I never get to the point where doing 10 miles or more feels comfortable.
17. See #6 – can’t run right now because of injury and it’s starting to drive me nuts.

12. Shorts in summer (because the heat and humidity are death). Carpris/pants every other season
13. Lately it has been 2-3 miles.
14. I have a little pouch with a super magnet that folds over my waistband for my shorts. Or my capris/pants have zippered pockets

12. SHORTS.

13. I take about 20-30 minutes to really feel good and warmed up, and then it’s another 20ish mins after that when I really get the runner’s high and feel like I could go forever.

14. When I take the stroller I have tons of storage space for keys, water bottle, phone. On a long run I leave my keys at home because my husband is there to let me in!

15. St. George because that is one beautiful race.

16. INTERVALS. Those runs hurt the most.

Your a genius! As a divorced mom with now grown kids I can see the benefit of taking the high road. Being spiteful with kids and divorce really only hurts the kids and there is absolutely no one that wins. It’s fun to see how the kids grow up and have close family to love.

Beach or Mountain Trail?
Definitely mountains! The past 6 months I was in Patagonia, Argentina and I got to run with spectacular views of the beautiful Andes mountains as well as the beautiful big 7 lakes of Bariloche, Argentina. I kind of got a little bit of both and was majorly spoiled in the outdoor running scene :) It makes it hard to run in Indianapolis again ;)

Is Spotify premium really worth the money? I’ve been thinking about it for probably a month now, and I still can’t bloody decide.

It is definitely worth the money! For me anyway. I love music and I would go broke if I paid for it on itunes.

You could use the free version, but I think it would eat a lot of your data plan. When I signed up, they were doing a one month free trial, so you should look into that! It is a little buggy but still worth it. Good luck!

1. Mountain trail, without hesitation. I’d lounge on the beach after!

2. I honestly don’t even know the flavours of Gatorade anymore; it’s been so many years! Something that tastes like lime would be awesome, though!

3. The new Garmin HRM watch that Running Room just posted. I’d cash in the gift card and somehow find other $$ to pick it up with! NO CHEST STRAP!! OMG!!

4. I’ve tried to follow training plans but they don’t work for me because of my schedule, and honestly, because I don’t want running to become a chore. So I only run 3-4x/wk instead of 5-6x/wk. I’ve done the c25k, and I’ve done a Women’s Pace couch to 10k in 13 weeks, but they were both 3x/wk plans. If I could find a 3x/wk 13.1 plan, I’d be over the moon because that’s what I’m training for. I’m sort of doing it on my own at the moment.

5. Depends on the day. With my running, I tend to have a lot of hills regardless of where I go – some small, some not-small. I think today I’ll probably finish with the mother of all hills, but usually I take on the bigger ones at the beginning, when I still have gas in my tank.

6. Cycle or swim, or walk.

7. What is your preference—> I’m a big fan of point-to-point, but they take planning! Thank god for bus passes!

10. Yep. T’was embarrassing.

11. Sushi. Full stop.

12. You call them capris? I call them crop pants, and yes. Those.

13. Typically I have to hit around 2k for my body to stop whinging. So around 15 minutes? It really gets grooving around 30 minutes; that’s when I tend to hit my pace, but I have to be careful or my pace skyrockets, and I subsequently run out of gas.

14. If people are home, I leave it. If people aren’t home, I clip it to my water belt.

15. The 10k race where I massively PRed (57:16, from 1:03:28!)

16. The ones where your body doesn’t connect with your head, so nothing seems to go right.

17. That I’m mostly recovered from a very small injury, but the hard part is not over-doing it so that I end up injuring myself again. It’s very annoying!

18. Typically from my front door. I bring my bus pass and a Visa for emergencies/to get home if I run a point-to-point.

19. A must, but my sunglasses suck. They’re not running glasses at ALL. I need new ones, but alas, money.

20. My October 1/2 marathon goal, and finding the right piece of music to get my groove back.

Right from the house – or it would never happen!

With $100 to spend, I’d go for lots and lots of cushy running socks. I can never have too many!

I am 100% a training plan girl. Without it I’d be lost.

My cross-training tends to be bootcamp/HIIT. It’s uncomfortable but it pushes me to get stronger and fitter. Probably my favourite cross-training is lake swims, but I can only do those 6 weeks out of the year where I’m from!

I’ve had 2 big motivators these days: pre-sunrise running where I’m the only one out on the road and get to watch my town slowly wake up, and the cheesy motivational slogans when I run on the indoor track (“every step carries you closer to your goal” &tc… )- I love them!

My most memorable wildlife encounter happened when I was running in a big city park with my dog one morning, and he cornered a skunk and got sprayed right in the eyes. It was horrible.

Love this survey! So many good ques to on but here are just a few:
-can’t run in shorts…thunder thigh problems so it’s capris for me.
-hide my key in the capri pocket or my spibelt
– would prefer a hill at the beginning than the end
-I do drive to my running routes but I also run right from the door

If you don’t mind I might borrow this for a future blog post. :)

I prefer any blue or purple gatorade……..the lemon lime you usually get was what I was given as a kid when I was sick, so I associate that with being sick.

I would definately spend the gift card on new running shoes!
I like loop courses. I have seen raccoons, muskrats, deer (big group of deer), vultures, hawks, snakes, and lots of lizards while running. I have gotten lost while running in friends neighborhoods……..those houses all start to look the same!

I prefer running in shorts or a running skirt. And it takes me 1-2 miles to feel really into the run. I tie my key to my right shoe…always the right…and I lace it in so it cannot fall off. And I start my run where I am. I know I end up running the same route alot, but it is hard for me to justify driving somewhere to go running.

1. Mountain trail. I grew up along the Cascades outside of Seattle, but live on a fjord in flat Denmark now. Lovely beaches to run along, but somedays I would do anything for another mountain trail run.
2. Blue. Is colour a flavour?
3. New shoes. Every. Time. I love the feeling new running shoes give me – fast, dangerous and fantabulous.
4. Training plan – which I will always change so much that what I have done will look nothing like the plan by the end.
5. Uphill at the end. I always feel a little more hardcore when I finish with the hardest hill on the home stretch.
6. Circuits of some sort. Usually with kettle bells.
7. Out and backs, especially with races. The whole bus thing is a pain.
8. A GPS pulse watch. Much better than any app and it helps you learn so much about your strengths and weaknesses.
9. Yes, deer and rabbits. One time after a flood, I found a huge fish in the pathway too. It was less lively that the deer and rabbits :-/
10. Kind of… I always have my iPhone with me, so I can map my way home.
11. My husband’s fresh pasta with cream sauce – made with bacon, onions, mushrooms and swiss cheese and with garlic bread on the side. So not diet food.
12. Shorts. And for some reason, I am buying them shorter and shorter these days.
13. 3 km… so 1.8 miles?? I have been away from the states so long, my brain and flipped over to metric measurements.
14. Spibelt.
15. My first 5K, which I ran so slowly I was actually embarrassed and considered stopping before I finished. It was the reason I started running for real because pushing past that horrible feeling made me realise how hardcore I could (potentially) become.
16. Recovery runs. I have a hard time not pushing myself.
17. Stress – I feel like a much more balanced human after a run.
18. I never thought about that. For some reason I walk around the corner of my property to start. It might be because that’s where I was when my old GPS watch would pick up the signal – now it’s just habit?
19. Sunglasses are nice, but my eyelashes usually hit against them, so I prefer a hat.
20. That it’s still fun. The moment it’s not fun anymore is when it’s time to call it a day.

13. At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go? Mile 2 – 3 depending on the temperature outside.

15. If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one what it be? Tobacco Road Marathon 2015 – My 37th birthday and also the day I qualified for Boston. The memory is branded in my mind. Each and every minute of that race is vivid.

20. When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting? My Type A personality. My Garmin has to read the mileage I set out to do.

My answer to #20! A family friend told me about a saying they have in the marines…”Embrace the suck”! Somehow, that gets me through all of my runs. You realize it sometimes sucks, but embrace it! Plus I picture a big marine with a bunch of gear running, and then I just feel like I have to keep going.
