Say a little prayer for my sis.

A day spent with my nieces is always a good day.

Let’s rewind to the beginning of the day.

I’m not gonna lie, I missed having a Saturday long run with my running friends BUT I am going to stick to taking a good chunk of time away from running.  I’ve learned from the past that I need to make sure I really take time to recover after a marathon before starting running up again.

I did put in a little time in on the brand new stairclimber at my gym.  It is the Mercedes Benz of stairclimbers.  It is so much smoother than the old ones and the controls on the handrails make it so easy to change levels etc.

IMG 9586

After the gym we took my sister some lunch and she was sporting a sweet scrunchie.

This last week she had some awful news.  She had an MRI done on her back and found out that she has 3 herniated disks, arthritis and some degeneration.  She is not doing well at all so if you could, send some prayers her way.   I hate more than anything to see her in pain.

IMG 9593

She was really hurting yesterday so I took care of her girls for the day.  While my oldest niece was at volleyball practice we had a picnic at home.

Once we picked up my niece we hit up the arcade for a few hours of partying.

IMG 9613 1

You know you are doing really well in life when you are at the grocery store at 7 pm on a Saturday night in your pajamas and slippers.

IMG 9616

We had a trillion cookies to bake to take to church today.  Once a month a group of us puts together a meal for our whole church group and I’m in charge of tomorrow’s meal.

IMG 0933

We ended up making 180 cookies last night.  I’m okay if I don’t bake for a long time again after last night;)  Used my favorite cookie recipe.

IMG 0940

To finish off the night we watched movies and the girls slept over!  Brooke was in heaven.

PS you may have already seen this on my Instagram yesterday but Brooke was sporting overalls and jelly sandals…  I had some great flashbacks from the 1990s:)

IMG 9580

Speaking of flashbacks, quick one back to last week when I met Kevin Hanson…. from the Hansons Marathon Method!!!  Friendliest guy ever and I tried to soak in every word he said about running.

IMG 0838

PS this stuff is ridiculously addicting.

I’ve never had back pain, but when I worked in the rehab center I worked with many people who had back pain. I always felt for them because that pain is really tough and, in general, you’re always in pain no matter what position you’re in. I really hope her pain goes away soon!

Saturday night we spent in, watched, a movie, and actually ate the Boom Chicka Pop Kettle Corn. It’s amazing and Costco has it on sale right now.

My addicting food right now is grapes!

So sorry to hear about your sister, that must be extremely painful for her. Nice that the girls got a playdate :) Hope she recovers quickly!

I’m wishing your sister a speedy recovery! I can’t imagine how hard it must be to take care of her kids while she is in pain :(

We’re obsessed with Boom Chicka Pop over here, too. My lil man can put away half a bag in one day, haha. We’ve also been really into Annie’s Bunny Graham’s.

I have a friend from my church who has 2 herniated discs and she is also often in a lot of pain!!! She might have surgery, but it a dangerous surgery and would be a year recovery. She is having a hard time with it all….it is hard, you wish you could do more!
Pears have been addicting to me lately :). I have been having one every day!
We got a hot tub at our house last night!!!!

Sorry to hear about your sister. I can definitely relate. I have had back issues for sixteen years now. I’ve had so many procedures done on my back that have helped for a while, but then they wear off. I had back surgery for my herniated disc in October. I had a lumbar arthroplasty where they took the bad disc out and put an artificial disc in. It has helped me very much. There are some days I’m not in pain at all.

I’ve been able to return to running after a hiatus, and, though running is still not easy, I’m getting better at it. I’m learning what works for me and what doesn’t. For example, running in the morning without warming up before my warm up doesn’t work. I will be in pain. But if I’m up and moving a couple of hours before I start my warm up I fare much better.

Please let your sister know there is treatment available, and she doesn’t have to be in pain the rest of her life.
Much love to you both.

Thinking of your sister! My sister went through something very similar about 5 years ago and while it was awful at the time she made a full recovery and is back to all of her favorite activities!

I have never had back problems myself, but I am a PA and work in spine surgery so I see the suffering that my patients deal with every day. I hope her doc/PA gets her into a good spine PT program and that she’s feeling better soon. There are some good indications for surgery on your back and there are some people who have to have surgery done, but I always try my best to keep my patients out of the OR, especially since most people with disc herniations (without red flag symptoms like weakness, bowel/bladder problems, or intractable pain) will get better without surgery!

Reply

Prayers for your sister! I can relate. I have lower back arthritis, too. I’ve had to do a lot of PT and learn to love cross training (can only run about 3x per week) but tell her it will all be OK and that swimming/water workouts never hurt! Hang in there.

Our Saturday was spent on the couch watching sports on TV. We had been to my nephew’s baseball tournament all afternoon and we were pretty spent by the time we got home.

Enjoy the cookies today! YUM.

I hope your sis feels better soon. We ended up cleaning all morning and then played board games while watching Netflix for the rest of the day.

Praying for your sister! I actually had back problems for about 5 years (and I’m only 23!). It forced me to give up the violin and switch to being a voice music ed major. After many doctors, MRIs, x-rays, physical therapy, still nobody could tell me what was going on! They basically told me to not do anything physical, to take pain medications, and to deal with it. Umm…no. I needed to live my life. A life that included being able to sit in the car or in class for longer than 10 minutes without pain, thankyouverymuch.

I joined a Crossfit box and started working out and strength training there- my quality of life significantly improved! I was experiencing much less pain. After a few months, I did a Whole 30 (strict elimination diet), and was pain-free the entire time! I could run, lift, do sit-ups, play violin, take a road trip, do EVERYTHING! Afterwards, I reintroduced wheat/gluten, and all of the pain returned within 30 minutes. Since then, I’ve been gluten-free and have my life back!

Emily, that is amazing! So happy you made that decision.

Prayers for your sister! I had a herniated disk 3 years ago. It’s very painful. I had microdiscectomy surgery to correct it with great success. My problems started after the birth of my 2nd. Having babies is so hard on our bodies! Not to mention all the bending and lifting we do as mammas everyday!!

My Saturday night was spent reading a good book (all the light we cannot see). Just what I needed after a busy day!

Hi Janae! I work for a Chiropractor and have seen quite a few patients w/ herniated discs, sometimes all that can help is surgery, but we’ve also had really good luck w/ patients doing a pretty intensive decompression treatment schedule. I would look for a chiro that offers decompression that happens in phases (pulls for a bit then a gentle release before pulling again, this prevents the muscles from spasming and clamping back down) I’ve seen it help people that can barley walk, after that she can look into spinal molding, this is just laying on foams to create spinal curves that will help keep the pressure off of the discs. The system we use is the Pettibon system, but anything similar should help.

Hope this is useful :)

Reply

Ashley, thank you so so much for commenting. My chiro told me about this procedure too (he doesn’t do it himself). Thank you for the recommendation… I will start researching about it! THANK YOU!

Adding your sister to my prayer list for sure!!! She is so blessed to have a sister like YOU to help!

So sorry to hear about your sis. Give her a very gentle hug for me. I love how helpful and supportive you are of each other.

My mom has a messed up back from some yahoo plowing head-on into her car a few years ago. She has to get fairly regular shots (every 3-6 months) to stay functional.

I’m obsessed with popcorn (all flavors!) and the dark chocolate”bark thins” from Costco.

Off to meet my friend for a 16 mile hilly run! We’ll see if I survive!

We had a busy day out and about yesterday and we looked forward to a lazy night, so by 5:00 last night we were all bathed, in pajamas and ready for a night on the couch filled with pizza and Despicable Me 2… It was awesome. The best part, I answered the door for the pizza guys in my pj’s, I told him not to judge ;)

Back pain can be horrible :( My mom had crippling back pain for a while, and did everything in her power to avoid surgery (not that surgery is bad, I’m a surgical nurse and think it’s good when you need it). She went through multiple physical therapists & chiropractors until she found someone who was really good, and gave her lots of stretches and exercises to do at home. She has become incredibly diligent about body mechanics and stretching her spine and strengthening her muscles and she’s pretty much pain free now. But she accepts that she will always have to work at keeping her back pain free. I hope your sister feels better soon, pain is awful, especially when she has little ones to take care of. I’m sending lots of prayers her way!!!!

Reply

I’m sorry to hear about your sis! Mechanical traction coupled with physical therapy by a highly skilled orthopedic PT can do wonders for a back like that, while avoiding surgery.
Saturday night plans was sushi ordered in and time with the family :) right now I’m addicted to green smoothies! Popcorn is always welcome though!

I am so sad for your sister. Back injuries are so painful and difficult to manage. I hope she can find the best treatment and feel better.
The only back problems I’ve had have been ligamental so I swear by a really good massage therapist and hot/cold therapy. With structural issues I wouldn’t dare give any advice.
Saturday night was spent at the gym doing strides and leg weights. I then came home and ate a big salad in bed while watching TV. I am a PARTY animal!!

I have been addicted to ice cream mix-ins… meaning: I’ll buy 2-3 types of ice cream. Warm it up for about 20 seconds (so the ice cream is basically the consistency of froyo) and then basically eat out all of the swirlz, toppings, candies, good-stuff, etc. It is and sounds pretty stupid, but I live alone–so I am not judging myself.

I have a herniated disc in my back and it was terrible when I was first diagnosed. I went to PT to try to avoid surgery and they put me on a traction table and no joke it was like a miracle. I haven’t had any pain since and am still able to run and do anything else I want. I highly recommend PT!

Thank you SO much for sharing Ali! My sis is reading all of the comments too. So glad that the traction table has helped so much, hopefully it can help my sister out too!

I’m so sorry to hear about your sis. I feel her pain! I developed two compression fractures in my thoracic spine a few years ago due to the effects of osteopenia brought on by anorexia. I’m 100% recovered from my eating disorder now, but have back issues to this day. In my experience, back problems can be controlled, but it takes patience and a lot of care. The TENS unit was my lifesaver, as was PT and specific stretches. I also lost the natural lumbar curvature of my spine (that makes your but stick out), so I try to spend at least an hour lying on my stomach in a sort of sphinx position every day (usually while blogging ;) ) Hugs to her!

As someone who was diagnosed with a large disc herniation, arthritis, and compressed vertebrae at 22 (I’m now 30) I understand what your sister must be going through. Please pass this on to her – seeing an osteopath has been LIFE CHANGING. So I really really highly recommend she find a good one who’s dealt with back pain before. Pelvic floor physiotherapists can also work wonders. Best of luck to her moving forward, I hope she finds something that works for her.

I understand the pain of watching someone you love suffer through intense back pain. When my husband was skiing at age 19, he was hit by a snowboarder and rolled 40 feet off a cliff. He survived, but the accident herniated 2 discs and ruptured 2 discs. He was able to avoid surgery for 10 years by doing intensive PT and working out regularly, though sadly he will never be able to run again. About 5 years ago, one of his ruptured disk blew so badly (he was moving a box) that he began having nerve damage and such intense pain that he would blackout. The MRI showed a badly blown disc. He underwent a microdiscectomy on his L4 and the surgery was very successful. Then, about 2 years ago, he was sanding/refinishing a dresser for our first child, when he had the same acute pain/numbness, this time in his neck and down his arm. Again, he was in blinding pain, and the MRI showed such that his disc was so ruptured, that it was pushing on his nerves in such a way that only surgery could clean up. So, when I was 39+ weeks pregnant with our first baby, my husband underwent a second spine surgery. I was an emotional mess! We were scared and nervous – both about becoming parents and about the surgery. But again, thankfully, it went very well. The crazy thing is, though, that I went into labor 6 days after his surgery! I needed caring for after giving birth, my husband’s recovery was 6 weeks long and he needed tons of help, and we had a newborn that needed round the clock care. And we didn’t have a lick of family in town to help. It was hell on earth for a while. But our family is so strong because of what we’ve gone through.

Oh Bethany, what an awful accident! He has been through so much (and so have YOU). I wish I could have been there to help you guys. Wow. Thank you for sharing Bethany, you guys are incredibly strong!

You’re really smart to recover from your full before kicking in the running! Sometimes I think people come back from races too soon, I am guilty myself. Just because running feels OK doesn’t necessarily mean we need to go back into training like we were before the race (applies to half marathons too!).

I tried that popcorn at Costco and it’s really good! I should go back and buy some, hehe. I really like the flavored popcorns and kettle corns sometimes. There’s one called Cosmos that is really, really, good!

It’s so exciting you met Kevin Hanson. I love their Half Marathon Method book and that is basically how I train :).

Yes, I have 2 herniated discs that happened while working as a paramedic. Fortunately my symptoms were relieved with PT. Every now and then it flares up but I’m thankful I recovered as well as I did. I will pray for your sister! I saw Les Miserables and went to dinner Saturday night, which was fun! I feel so bad for your sister and will def keep her in my prayers – hope she has a swift road towards recovery. My mom has a herniated disk – I don’t think you ever really get rid of it . . . she had a lot of trouble and I remember sometimes she couldn’t even get out of bed she would be in so much pain. She went to several doctors – all of whom wanted her to have surgery. Finally she found a pain management doctor who gave her effective treatment without the need for surgery. She had a series of shots (I don’t know what kind but she would go in get the shots and have to remain at the office for close to an hour afterwards because she couldn’t walk for about 45 min after the shots and I would pick her up). She also did some physical therapy and would do exercises for her back at home. Anyway, she has flareups here and there but she runs regularly – does a couple of halfs a year and did not have to have surgery so we were pretty happy about that . . . best of luck to your sis and I hope she gets help and starts feeling better soon!

I had a herniated disc during Katrina. I remember it because all I could do was lay in bed on my left side and watch the misery in New Orleans. I wanted to avoid surgery and run again. My doctor recommended a shot I believe with cortisone. I was hesitant at first but it worked like a miracle. It reduced the swelling from the inflamed nerve that the disc was pushing on and the disc went back into place. I am simplifying but I have run consistently for years and just finished my first half 2 weeks ago. I also worked with a chiro and got some relief but not enough to resume normal life. Maybe a combination for your sister. I will pray for her to find what will work best for her and bring her relief and quality of life. She’s lucky to have you so close. Keep us posted!

Prayers to your sissy! I had bad sciatica pain during and after my pregnancies and it got worse when my infants were in car seats lifting in and out of vehicles. Yoga helped and once my infants out outgrew that stage I healed quickly.

I had a herniated disc, lower back arthritis, piriformis syndrome, and sciatica all at the same time right before my wedding two years ago. I’m only 27 yo and was super bummed. I did PT but it didn’t help me much. The pain was too much and I would literally collapse when I entered the front door and drop all my stuff. For me, deep stretch yoga really really helped. I’m sorry to hear she is in pain; I know the feeling and can only imagine having 3 herniated discs. I pray she gets better soon!

This is a FREE PDF Download and no harm done by checking out a few pages. I recommended this when you were talking about your sister’s piraformis syndrome. I have actually also thought of you, Janae, with some of your running injuries. Anyways, it’s just one school of thought of many, but definitely worth checking out! Sooner than later! My doctor recommended it to me, it fell on deaf ears, and finally I checked it out and it changed everything.

Your poor sister, I know how she must feel. My mum had the same thing as your sister, she was in so much pain, broke my heart. She ended up having a big Op to replace the discs as it also caused her permanent nerve damage, which still gives her grief till today. Does your sister also have nerve damage? I will surely be praying for her, heartbreaking :(

That is so not fun for your sister :(

I was diagnosed with a herniated disc and a bulging disc (L4,L5) following a car accident. It took them over a year to diagnose it because they didn’t want to do an MRI (cheapskate insurance dudes). They told me it was soft tissue and that I could continue to train (this was back when I was rowing). When I lost all feeling in my legs in the middle of a workout and had to be carried out of the boat, they finally agreed to do the MRI. The treatment option I chose worked amazingly well, although it didn’t get me back to rowing where I had been. I had a series of epidural steroid injections. They really hurt but really fixed up the problem, almost overnight. I haven’t had any issues with my back since then (knock on wood!) and that was over 20 years ago. I wish her all the best!

I’m so sorry to hear about your sister’s back. I did not fully appreciate back pain until I herniated a disc a few years ago. The pain and discomfort were awful and when it’s your back, you really can’t isolate the area so all movement hurts. I went to PT for several months but could never fully get better. I let it go on for months before finally getting a cortisone shot. I’m lucky that the shot worked for me – it allowed the inflammation to calm down long enough for me to recover and all those PT exercises really helped out. I still have to be careful to listen to my body, i.e. not sit for too long and stretch my back each day.
I thought I had it bad until last year when my husband herniated a disc so badly that he could not sit or stand without being in extreme pain. He literally spent 4 weeks laying on the floor as that was the only position that alleviated the worst of the pain. He tried a chiropractor, physical therapy, accupuncture, massage and a steroid shot. None of these things helped him because the disc was not only pressing on the sciatic nerve, but had started to get embedded in it. We spoke to a surgeon and it was scary for us but it was the best course of action for him (microdiscetomy). It was like a miracle – he woke up from surgery and was not in pain. They had him up and walking that evening and to see the look on his face – walking and standing without pain! It’s been a year and he still has to be careful lifting items and he absolutely cannot skip a day of stretching and core work, but as long as he listens to his body he’s ok. He’s starting doing yoga in addition to cycling and some running and this summer he plans on doing a sprint tri. He didn’t have any option but to have the surgery, but I wanted to let your sister know that if it comes to that that it really does work. Best of luck.

OMG do I have back problems…?!! Started out when I was 17 and shattered a vertebrae in the middle of my back in a car wreck and had three discs fused together. That part became super strong but the weight of it caused degeneration in my low back. I see a sports rehab chiropractor (sounds alot like yours!) who told me (when I started running a few years ago) that he wasn’t going to tell me to stop until it started hurting me. Oddly enough, when I see him for pain it’s actually when I’m OFF of my running schedule! His treatments and my long time PT exercises keep me going for my prep for my FOURTH half marathon in two weeks!! It’s completely possible for her to make a bounce back!

Reply

Praying for you sister. Anything to do with pain in the back is the worst… because you really can’t do anything and are rendered almost immobile :(. Really hope that she will find healing and be out of the discomfort soon!

Reply

Ohhhh yes. lots of issues with my spine. I burst a vertebrae (my L1) when I was 19, and I needed to have titanium rods put in there from my T9-L3, and my T12 or 13 and my L2 are fused together. Also had bone marrow taken from both of my hips, and had a rib removed for bone marrow, but when my rib was removed my lung collapsed so I also needed a chest tube. BUT it’s been 9 years since my last surgery, and I can run ultra marathons!

Umm I spent Saturday night organizing my friends closets and buying spray paint, and then spray painting some furniture boyfriend and I wanted to decorate. Super good times.
