FIRST, I am trying to figure out how to get rid of the video that plays when you open up my blog. I’ve emailed the peeps, just waiting for them to fix it.
Sisters that go to the chiropractor together stay injury free together (the sister is getting her piriformis syndrome worked on).
Turns out that when my sister and I get together we laugh pretty darn loud so Brooke is constantly trying to remind us to be a little bit quieter.
My right (it is always my right leg that loves to be lame) hamstring was bugging me after yesterday’s workout but Dr. Bennett (my not-so-secret secret weapon) worked his magic and it is back to normal again.
My hamstring was bugging me because the front part of my leg (the vestus intermedius) needed some work on it and some good old muscle reactivation—> crazy how a muscle group in one area of the body can affect another area so easily.
I have waited my entire life to have a running shoe selfie with my daughter and my sister.
Brooke loves treadmill time as much as I do… Toys, shows and snacks while I ran 9 miles @ an 8:07 pace today.
6 minutes of planking—> 2 minutes centered on my elbows, 1 minute side plank on each side, 2 minutes centered on my elbows.
This is Brooke’s current favorite stuffed animal, this stuffed animal actually creeps me out a little bit:
What dreams are made of:
Why does seasonal/holiday candy taste even better than normal candy?!

What is your sentence for the day?
Has anyone else struggled with Piriformis Syndrome? What has helped you to get rid of it? How long did you deal with it?
Have any sisters? Do any of them live close to you?
What was your workout today?

Sarah @ KS Runner
I have two sisters. Both of them live in Charlotte, NC, so not close to me at all.
I have 7 miles on tap after work and I did a mile walk over lunch, it is beautiful outside!
That stuffed animal is a little creepy. I think its just the one pink eye…
Jennifer @ JenChoosesJoy
I’m worn out from a tough hilly 11 miles with friends this morning!
I’ve never been to the chiropractor. It makes me super nervous, but glad you’re able to get some relief. :)
I’m with you…holiday candy is far superior!
Linda @ Running4two
Love the shoe selfie!
Brooke happily plays by herself while you run 9 miles?!?!?! That’s so great. Annabelle would be trying to hop on the treadmill for sure. :)
I ran 7.5 miles outside in shorts!!!! It was amazing!
Susan
I got to ride my bike today. Taking advantage of this wonderful weather before we get hit w/ snow again!!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
Amazing plank! I agree I get all excited to buy potatoes at the store, especially the purple sweet ones I’ve been seeing lately.
Aimee
Workout today is my own little dose of attempted “speed” work on the dreadmill. I have been lacking motiviation the past couple of days. But today I am going to dig deep and make myself push through. I do not kill myself with speed stuff, so it typically ends up being a much shorter workout than usual. Makes me feel very accomplished in a relatively short amount of time.
The Hungry Runner Girl
YOU’VE GOT THIS AIMEE!!! You are going to rock your speed workout:)
Aimee
Thank you, Janae. My “speed” work is NOTHING compared to your’s. Typically will go easy mile warm-up, then 6-10 “fast” for 1 min….then finish with 1 mile. So…only ends up being ~4 miles, but hey…it’s better than nothing. :/
The Hungry Runner Girl
Girl, that is AWESOME workout!!! Don’t you dare downplay that… fast intervals are tough!! Have a blast:)
Kate @ www.socalrunnergal.com
The video ads are annoying but not as bad as when I have Vagisil ads all over my blog! Thank goodness 99% of my readers are women (I think). Haha!
Brooke is going to be a speedster like her mama one day!
Hollie
Glad to hear your hamstring is feeling better. I’m jealous it was that easy for me though! I have found my hips are knocked out of alignment which I think has knocked a lot of my muscle groups in the leg out.
Hollie
Out of alignment!
Glad you are doing well Janae! We need to catch up soon :-)
The Hungry Runner Girl
We seriously need to get back to our emoji texting conversations. Yep, my hips love to do that too. I think that because I go in so often, I am able to catch things long before they get bad!
Natalie
Love the shoe selfie!! No sisters – I am an only child!
Will be running in the pool later today :)
Sentence of the day: I am so excited for spring!!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Yay for pool running… that is a hard workout!
Natalie
It is a hard workout, but I am settling in and enjoying it!! :)
I hope you have a fantastic rest of the day!!!
Cate
Are you left handed? When I was getting fitted for my bike the other day, the guy said the leg opposite of the hand you write with is more prone to injury. the side you write with is supposedly smarter, therefore is injured less. Also, I live your sister’s Fresh Foams. I have the same pair! :)
The Hungry Runner Girl
YESSSSS!!! I am left handed. Okay, that is super interesting! I believe it!
Jenni
What? That is bogus lol. I’m left-handed and ALWAYS get injured on the Left side. I can see why he might say that (people tend to be stronger on their dominant side)…but I’ve never found it to be true professionally or personally. Interesting though. Also if you think of athletes like pitchers and hockey players, they almost always get injured on the dominant side….okay, I’m getting off topic here -sorry! :)
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes
I have one sister who’s in college about six hours away from me! I try to visit her at least every couple months because I miss her.
My workout was 9 miles with 3 x 2 miles at half marathon pace – hard but rewarding run!
The stuffed animal creeps me out also.
Angelica
Sorry if this seems creepy, but your sister’s nose is PERFECT! I love it!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Not creepy at all hahaha! I totally agree with you!
kristin | W [H] A T C H
in the words of liz lemon, my sentence is “blergh.”
Alisha @ Real Girl Running
I have one younger sister who lives about an hour a way. I miss her when I don’t get to see her much!
My workout today was strength training, with lots of reps per set. It got my heart rate up!
BriAnne
Sisters are the greatest! I can’t even think about how much i miss mine because then I get all weepy… :( But it does make family vacations 10 times better when we get to see each other (6 more weeks!)
This morning I did a killer upper body work out because I wanted somewhat fresh legs for tomorrow’s spin class with my favorite instructor!! :) Seriously, last week’s class about did me in, hahaha!
[email protected]
I have two sisters and they live pretty close by :), I will be running seven miles and going to barre class tonight, I am hooked!
Ashley
That shoefie is the cutest thing I have ever seen!!! Great pic!
I have 8 miles to log today after work. My next marathon (Eugene Marathon) is officially less than 2 months away as of today! I can’t wait!
And lastly I (sadly) have no sisters. I have two brothers. I remember when I was little literally praying to god that he would change my older brother into my older sister. Alas, it never worked.
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West
Brooke’s little shoes are adorbs!
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff
I use a tennis ball or a frozen bottle of water and sit on it and roll my butt until I hit the spot that is tight. It helps my piriformis a lot.
Love the sneaker selfie. :)
My sentence for the day is chiropractic medicine rocks!
I ran 3 sluggish miles without my knee giving up on me. Yay!
Cassi Rose
I have never heard of that syndrome but I’m about to look it up!
And I have one sister… I live in northern New Mexico and she lives in Seattle. :'( This HAS to change.
laura fulks
I have two sisters but we all are spread across the country now. Sad!
My run today was the first with my husband – two miles on a red rock canyon trail while we are down on Vegas and the MIL is watching our kids! It was amazing!
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola
I have 1 sister and she lives in a different state. We used to live 1 street away from each other before we both relocated.
Monika
HAHAHAHA that stuffed animal and your reaction to it made me laugh out loud.
Sentence for the day – going to LA tomorrow to visit my best friend! Meet me at Disney Land? ALSO I will take any recommendations for scenic places to run in the area since I will be attempting a 12 mile run (my last long run before my half marathon!)
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job
I have a sister and we used to live 10 min apart but now we are half the country apart. It’s weird though bc now we talk more than we ever did when we were so close.
My workout today was a legg/butt WOD at the studio where I teach. One legged deadlifts FTW!
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
Love the shoe selfie! Whomever said about about the hand you write with not getting injured is so true!
Sentence for the day -> I’m going to Munich next month!
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
I have a little sister (23, not so little) who I am very close to in terms of bonds…but I live in the Bahamas and she lives in Chicago. My workout today is about to be yoga because my hip flexors feel like they want to snap.
Caroline
Oh the dreaded piriformis. Kind of always creeps up on me every now and then. I can usually relieve it with massage and lots of stretching. I use a tennis ball or lacrosse ball or convince my husband to dig his elbow in there.
My twin sister lives in Milan, Italy…and I’m in NJ. So, lots of skyping, emailing. I maybe see her once every to years. It’s rough…but what can I do.
My workout today: 2 hr run at the indoor track, 75 minute hot vinyasa yoga class, 75 minute hot bikram style yoga class, 1 hr:15 minute run.
Jessica @ VEGGIE RUNNING MOMMA
YOur sister is already running post partum.!? woo guess being a beast runs in the family.!! that is so awesome.

that running shoe picture is so cute!! You better frame that or something :)

Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine
I have been dealing with piriformis issues for way too long! I had it for a year and a half in 2012-2013, and it finally went away with dry needling. Then it came back a year later and its been bothering me on and off since last October (dry needling didn’t knock it out this time)..I also have SI joint alignment issues but Im not sure which caused the other. I’ve been seeing chiros and PTs about this and it is SO frustrating!
I have one sister and she lives down the block from me!
Suzy
I have two sisters and they’re my best friends. They’re also 8 and 10 years older than me, which is kinda cool. I’ve never had piriformis issues but my SI joint acts up from time to time and wreaks havoc on my poor right hamstring (I’m not left-handed!).
Amanda @ Slimplify Life
I flew from DC to Seattle this morning and I think the fresh produce at Pike’s Place is sort of like heaven?!?!
I have 2 sisters, one is 3 years older, one is 15 years younger….my parents just had a weeeee little age gap in children there ;).
Aimee
Enjoy Seattle!! Weather has been gorgeous lately!!
Laur
Today I will conquer the art of carrying Wawa coffee to and from my car with crutches! I wish I had a sister! Will you be mine?? HA! Or I’ll be Brooke’s sister. Either way works for me ;)
That stuffed animal is almost as creepy as a furby.
Megan D
6 min plank?? Go you!!
That stuffed animal will haunt my nightmares tonight. Seriously.
Love my sisters. They are an hour and 20min away, but luckily I still see them several times a month.
I didn’t exercise today. Maybe I still will. This is my first day (that wasn’t a Sunday) where I haven’t exercised since January 3rd. So everything inside of me is going crazy saying I need to…especially after all the treats last night, but I just don’t feel like it at the same time.
Melissa
I have an older sister, she lives about 10 minutes ago. But we text like we never see each other :)
Today was cross-training day: rowing, leg press, squats ext…. :)
Today’s sentence ” Spring spring glorious spring! ” I am pretty much ignoring the snow that is still covering my yard and loving the 50* weather in Michigan today :) Mud pies were made by my daughter, beautiful sight!! haha
Flower
When you’re doing your planks, if you turn your palms face up instead of face down, you’ll engage more muscles in your core and get a much better result. That’s my sentence and my tip of the day :)
Caroline @ The Little Things Blog
My workout today: a walk after work! I’m so excited that it’s finally light again when I get out of work!
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog
That running shoe selfie is PERFECTION. Nothing better than teeny tiny running shoes!
Kayse @runhappyrunhealthy
My sister was the one who got me to move to Alaska and introduced me to my husband and running. Yes she pretty awesome! We don’t run together a lot anymore due to different paces and races but its great to be close to her and my nephew!
Today is my technique swim class to work on my form so I can be speedy for triathlons.
seenancyrun
Hey, Jenae. I asked once before but, if I got an answer it probably was a few days later and I didn’t go back and check. Just wandering if Dr. Bennett provides your treatment at a discounted rate or free. I didn’t know if chiropractors sometime do that as I could sorely (ha ha – sorely – get it?) use some help with my ankles, especially the left one. I was thinking about seeing my aunt’s chiro.
You’re right – foil covered chocolate Easter eggs are the best chocolate of the year.
Gretchen // gretchruns
Hi janae! I just ordered the Pure Flows since you’re always talking about them and went on my first run with them. ..holy smokes they are great! I was doing 8 minute miles and barely broke a sweat! I think I found my new racing shots.
I have one sister who moved to California three years ago but is moving back to pittsburgh PA in May! I’m so excited!!
LeAnne @ This is my faster!
I have two sister!!!! I have a twin sister and a baby sister :) Unfortunately they both live in Jamaica and I am in Florida, which really really sucks :(
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan
I only have a brother, and he lives on the other side of the country.

Domi @ Eat, Pray, Lift
Winco is the BEST, no? It’s like the disneyland of food haha.
Elena
My sentence today is “just one week” as in one week till vacation!
I do have a sister but we live several states apart and really don’t have much in common at ALL. But we do have fun when we see each other over the holidays and in the summer :) I text with my mom every day though and have two teenage daughters so LOTS of girl love in my life <3
Today I took a break from running and walked the dog 3 miles and did eliptical and weights at the gym!
Macy
Pretty shoes! Are those pureflows? I don’t think I have seen them in that pretty aqua color before. Love! Brooke’s are adorable too.
Amber
Piriformis!!! The evilist of all injuries!! I have had it for a year and counting!! Please let us know what helps your sister. It is nasty. When I first got it, I actually ended up getting a brain scan for suspected ms. It was my piriformis making my left side tingly and making me have the shakes.
Ive had some relief by doing this weird “neural flossing” seen here:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HdOtMv46MV0
It’s interesting that rest did not help piriformis at all. Foam rolling made it worse, maybe because it is a nerve?
Kim @ RunningLife&Chocolate
I have 3 sisters. One lives 2 miles from me. One lives almost 2 hours away and the third lives in Germany. She and her husband are expecting their first baby. I miss her. Thankful she will be here in the states right after she has the baby for a visit!
Denise @ An Academic Athlete
I have an older sister who lives in Atlanta. I live in Indiana, so definitely not close! My husband’s [twin] sister only lives about an hour away (and is about two weeks away from having a baby girl!!), so that’s good. :) Today I ran 4.5 miles outside and it was absolutely beautiful!
Amanda
I just have to say this, from your women’s running article, is beautifully written:
“We work at our struggles, we come up with new solutions and we don’t give up. Our insides change a bit with the added stress. Maybe our heart gets a little bigger, just like it does with running, by going through the tough life stuff too.” http://womensrunning.competitor.com/2015/03/hungry-runner-girl/hungry-runner-girl-adaptation_35799#PGyh36rIABM5z6vQ.99

PLEASE have your sister check out this website (and others…she can google Piraformis Syndrome and TMS, Dr. Sarno), with an open mind. I struggled with this during my first pregnancy and post-partum as well and it was making me really frustrated and frankly, depressed. I finally figured out that it wasn’t a physical issue, although the pain IS real pain. My doctor brought it up to me, and she said the real tragedy is that 99% of folks will rebuke a psychological diagnosis because the pain is “real”…yes, it IS real, yet there can and often is a totally different cause. It’s mind-blowing and truly has changed my life since the day I discovered Dr. Sarno. I try to spread the word as much as possible. In fact, when I was reading your blog some months ago and you commented your sister was having hip/back trouble because of her pregnancy, in the back of my mind, I thought, “TMS?”. Anyways, it is really worth looking into. Don’t wait months and months like I did, Dear Sissy! I suffered needlessly for far longer because I didn’t bother to look into it until I was truly desperate and had been to loads of PT, chrio, massage, had an MRI/CT scan, wore a stabilization belt, etc etc. Best of luck and let me know if any of this does resonate with your sister! xo Love you and your blog, Janae! I want a video of your Minnie Mouse impersonation, STAT!!!
Meg Bell
SIX.MINUTE.PLANK. ??? you are clearly my hero.
Randi
Yup, kinda thinkin’ the same thing. I throw a party if I get to one whole minute ;-)
Emily
Yes, I have 3 amazing sisters! :) I’m not married yet or moved out, so they live pretty close. Two live in the beds in my room. 1 lives in the bedroom next door. ;-)
My workout was a weights workout off of Fitness Blender. It was fun. It worked up quite a sweat. I used to be a ‘weights workout’ snob. I didn’t think they would make me break a sweat. Boy was I wrong.
Randi
Ooh pirformis is no fun….so sorry your sis is going through that. What helped me was getting deep tissue massages every week or every other week. I of course foam rolled but that alone I wasn’t getting better. It took about 3-4 massages at my chiro’s office and I was good. I hope she feels errrr soon…pirformis is surprisingly painful :-(
Nina
PT, a tennis ball and pigeon pose helped me with performis syndrome.
No sisters and my brother doesn’t live close by. I hang out with my cousin, she is a year older and we were always together.
4 mile run followed by Dirty 30 strength workout.
Corry
I have two sisters that live in the same city as me – one is three years older and one is three years younger. Sort of close with the older one, but not at all with the younger one. Jealous of people that are so close with their sisters.
Morning workout: 25 mins of rowing, 40 mins elliptical, body pump class and then some weights on my own.
Evening workout: 5.6K walk on the treadmill and more weights.
karla @ finding my fit
I wish I had a sister.. I do have a best friend that I’ve been close with since we were 7 so I call her my sister :)
today is a much needed rest day.
Marissa @ Run Riss Run
Ohmygoodness, the running shoe selfie! Too cute!
I am so glad that at least one of my sisters lives in town, and only about 10 minutes away from me. I am not even sure what I would do with myself if she were any further away.
Workout was bootcamp this morning and my arms pretty much feel like they are going to fall right off.
Kristen
Not sure if the video is truly gone or if I finally figured out how to configure my browser right but HRG is back to being totally safe for work! (’cause your content ALWAYS is)
Holly
I absolutely love the shoe selfie! So stinkin cute!
I have had a lot of running related injuries (rest days are not my forte!) but I have not had Piriformis Syndrome! Praying for speedy recovery!
I have little sisters and we live extremely close! I am so blessed to call them my best friends! I love how close you are to your family!
No workout today, trying my hand at a rest day! :)

My hamstring is sooooo sore today – and I was wondering if my quads were the reason…after reading your post, I’m thinking I was right…I have an appt with my physio on Sunday!
I don’t have a sister – just a younger brother. But he’s married so it’s like I have a sister now! :) But they live 6 hours away…with my ADORABLE nephew. I so wished they lived closer!!
