-The best piece of advice I have received in years:

I am glad that everyone else in the universe agrees with me that pink starbursts are a million times better than the yellow ones.

– Tina sent on over this little graph of the Boston course elevation.  My legs actually burn (even though I am sitting down) just looking at mile 21.

This is the source of the overview of the marathon course and they have a great breakdown of all of the different sections of the course.  Can’t wait to rock those hills;)

-8 miles on the treadmill this morning @ 7:39 average pace and I wore some of my favorite jewelry to help me get ready for my long run tomorrow.

-22 miler—>  we are ready to conquer you.

-I have to confess something.  I go through Brooke’s baby pictures way too much.  Yes, I am going to be that mom on Brooke’s first day of Kindergarten sobbing in the parking lot because she has grown up too fast.

I came across this picture on my instagram and stared at it for 5 minutes without blinking.  She has always been a smiler.

-Got a few minutes in today with a few of my favorites!

IMG 7879

-Had a little lunch date with a grilled chicken salad.

-My sister and I have been spending a little too much time looking at floor plans.  It will still be a while until I find a house but we are sure having fun obsessing over every little detail.

-Costco has chocolate coconut cream pies right now (aka my favorite flavor of pie ever) and I am tempted to go get one right now for my dinner.

House planning is so much fun!
Dessert: I’d have the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting from j Alexander’s!!! It’s warm and gooey and perfect.

I could go for a brownie and ice cream pretty much all day everyday. Yum.

The hills in Boston are not that bad (seriously!). The first year I ran Boston, I didn’t even know which hill was Heartbreak. I remember thinking that while my quads were burning, it wasn’t so much the hills themselves, just at what point they are located in the course. I’ve done races with much worse hills, the reputation of the Boston hills is worse than the hills themselves. I promise! You will own them because you can do hard things! :)

Reply

I was going to comment similarly! I’ve done Boston 4 times and going up Heartbreak is not the bad part… it is coming back DOWN (for me) that is painful. Not much you can do about it but I remember seeing a sign at the top of the last hill that said “pain is temporary” and I channeled that thought through every pounding downhill step from miles 21-23. The pain goes away so just let your mind go to a happier place :)

Reply

I’ve done it four times as well and I’ve never really thought it was terrible – don’t get me wrong, I’ve been super tired and ready to be done! I know especially the first time I did it that I remember thinking “that’s it?” when I saw a sign that said I’d passed Heartbreak Hill. The reputation is much worse than the reality!

I agree….I live in Boston…I’ve run Boston three times and have done all my training on the course. The hills aren’t bad….it’s more that the first part of the course is downhill so people go out too fast and don’t have energy left for the hills at the end. You’re training in Utah…..Heartbreak Hill will seem like an ant hill to you!!!!!

Reply

Sarah…we think alike! I could eat ice cream all day, every meal, everyday…seriously its bad. and with brownies, even better!

And I’m with you about the Boston hills. They are not very steep, just that they come at mile 21 when you really need to dig deep!

Reply

I agree that it’s the timing of the hills not the actual hills that is bad. You run hills all the time and won’t even notice them!
I felt good over them in 2013 but went out too fast last year and it was quite hot so they were more of an issue but smart pacing should fix that.
You have been killing your training so you’ll have zero issues!

Carrot cake would be my choice. It’s my absolute favorite! And you’re not random! You’re Janae! That’s what makes your posts you!

I am craving some fresh baked chocolate chip cookies!!!

Reply

An orange roll from Dottie’s Kolaches in Heber. It is worth the drive up the canyon, you should totally come get one ;)

I will go halfsies on that pie with you. Pretty sure Costco sized pies are 2 servings anyway. I don’t think I have ever had that flavor before, but I love them both individually and I like those flavors together in ice cream, so I don’t see how I wouldn’t thoroughly enjoy it.

I have the vacuum that is in the background of the picture with your sister. Another Costco purchase that I love.

That picture of Brooke makes me sad. I mean, she is gorgeous and swell and all still, but I swear she was just that baby yesterday.

Oh and no worries about the hills. You will rock Boston so hard. Just wish I could be there to see it personally. My mom feels that way especially ;)

First of all, it would be Ganache Torte from Milestones. Do you guys have Milestones in the States? And second of all, just an interesting piece of info about Boston… I crested Heartbreak Hill without having a CLUE that that’s what it was. Either I live in a really hilly city (Vancouver, BC) or there was just too much hype about the size of the hill at mile 21, or maybe a combination of both but for me and my experience? It was not even close to being a big deal. Seattle Marathon’s hills will make anyone poop their pants. Boston’s Heartbreak Hill is like a run through the prairies in comparison.

Reply

Carrot cake, hands down! I could seriously eat a huge piece of it right now…or 2 or 3…if I’m being honest :) We are hoping to build a house in the near future in the country and we pretty much know what we want as far as layout. It’s so much fun looking at plans!!

Reply

I’d kill for a warm brownie sundae! Warm. Gooey. Vanilla ice cream. HOLY COW.

Reply

Do I have to choose just ONE favorite dessert?! It would have to be either a chocolate malted milkshake or lemon meringue pie.

Reply

Honestly, Janae, I was so freaked out about heartbreak hill and those scary miles but then they didn’t even phase me the slightest bit. You honestly will hardly notice them — especially considering the hills you’re used to running and the elevation in Utah. You’re good. Trust me!

Reply

Caramel mousse cake! Almond meringue, chocolate ganache, caramel mousse (with real homemade caramelized sugar and real whipping cream) and an almknd brittle all around th outside. Amazing :) might make it this weekend.

YES to pink Starbursts over ANY over flavor, ever! Fro yo is always the answer. There’s a Fro Yo 5K coming to San Diego in a hot minute and I’m so tempted to sign up. I didn’t realize I’d need such a race budget when I moved out here :/ #brokeasajoke

Reply

DQ cookie dough blizzard…or heath bar…can I just say a DQ blizzard?

Also YOU WILL KILL THOSE NEWTON HILLS! I might be crazy, but Heartbreak Hill really isn’t the worst of ’em. It’s long, but that first one you hit right by the fire station is the real doozy in my book. BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER BECAUSE YOU’LL EAT THEM ALL FOR LUNCH!

I’ll be out there cheering on the runners in a few weeks, I’ll keep an eye out for you! If you hear a crazy person yelling your name that you don’t recognize, around Cleveland Circle…that’ll be me. :-)

Reply

Hands down, for me it is ALWAYS a cupcake!!!! Cupcakes make everything better!!! Cupcakes are for any occasion too!!!! :)

Reply

Samoa cheesecake! I found the recipe on Pinterest and my good friend who is an awesome baker made it for me after I finished the LA marathon a week and a half ago. Can I just say the most amazing dessert I ever tasted! An Oreo cookie crust, then cheesecake topped with toasted coconut, caramel and chocolate! Let’s just say ridiculous!!!

Reply

I could totally go for some banana bread right now. I have some in the fridge, so maybe it can be my reward when I get back from my run! Seriously, it’s 8:30 and I’m procrastinating these 4 x 1 mile repeats so bad. I need to get out and do it!!

Dessert: my grandma’s raspberry jelly roll. SO good!

My wedding dessert was a spin on a Baked Alaska, it was a chocolate mold “cup” like a cupcake with a layer of cake, chocolate ganache, ice cream then glazed meringue. It was amazing! We had them in chocolate/peppermint, chocolate/peanut butter and raspberry/vanilla. Apart from marrying the love of my life, I think it was probably the highlight of my wedding.

We also had homemade baked Alaska’s made by our wonderful and talented friends at our rehearsal dinner. They flamed them right in front of us and possibly lit the table on fire, but it was awesome :)

I can’t wait to run Boston someday – that course – gah!!!

I ran Boston in 2005 and wasn’t in great shape. I got to heartbreak hill and almost laughed. It’s not so bad. Might be a little rough to hold sub-7 pace, but don’t worry. It’s not all its hyped up to be. You’ll have a blast. It’s hands down the coolest, most unique and fun race I’ve ever run in my 25 years as a runner. Soak in every second and enjoy it-regardless of whether the race goes as you hope. There’s nothing else like it!

Hands down my mom’s carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Ohhhh so good!

That chicken salad looks awesome!!

Ironically I was looking at the Boston course today too! I plugged my time into a pace calculator which gives you splits for every mile at Boston. I was actually pleased with the results and now have a bit more confidence. Although I’m not sure I will be hitting the suggested pace for the Newton hills, but hopefully they won’t ruin my finish time (fingers crossed!).

Reply

I would either want a chocolate croissant from the Blackbird Bakery on Bainbridge Island or a hazelnut crepe from France :)

Reply

Oreo truffles. A million Oreo truffles.

If you ask me right now, I would have to say a dense, warm, fudgy brownie. My answer can totally change throughout the day, so come back to me later and it may be different :)
