Dear Treadmill and Homemade Gu

I was dreading getting on the treadmill this morning.  Like most days, it is my only option so I decided on the way to the gym to come up with all of the reasons that I love the treadmill in order to change my attitude about the machine.  It worked.

Dear Treadmill,

Thank you:

-For making it possible to do mile repeats this morning when it is much too slippery to do them outside.  All of the sudden Utah decided to have winter.  PS when I first opened the door this morning and Brooke saw all of the snow she said, “Mama, IT’S CHRISTMAS!!!!!!”  (As you can tell below, Brooke wasn’t very happy that it actually wasn’t Christmas).

-For making it so that I have a water bottle within arms reach of me throughout my entire run.  Having a restroom nearby at all times is pretty awesome too.

-For giving me the chance to just zone out and just run without worrying about cars, curbs, dogs, my route etc.

-For giving me that ‘sweat in my eyeballs’ experience that is nearly impossible to get when running outside during the winter.   You have to admit, it feels really good to sweat it all out.  Add that with all of the endorphins= heaven.

-For making it possible for a single mom to train for a marathon without having to ask my mom to babysit for much more than my weekly long run.

-For keeping me on pace.  No slowing down or speeding up when you shouldn’t be on accident!  You go the speed that you set the treadmill to do.

-For building up my mental toughness.  Running miles and miles on the treadmill and staying focused when it can get quite boring will make Boston easy right;)

-For allowing me to catch up on my reading on my easy days (I know it is crazy that I can read and run but I set the font on my iPad pretty big and I don’t bounce too much).

-For making me feel cool this morning when the bottoms of my shoes were hot from the treadmill belt working so hard.

I guess treadmills are pretty great.

On the schedule for today were some MILE REPEATS.

Screen Shot 2015 03 03 at 2 31 30 PM

My 5 mile repeats were —>  6:18, 6:15, 6:10, 6:10, 6:10.  All at a .5% incline.  7:11 overall pace.  Angry music plus a ridiculous amount of motivation lately to rock my training made this workout possible.

I got the one treadmill that goes longer than 60 minutes which pretty much made my day.

Brooke loves it when her cousins have an early out day from school because it means it is time to party.

IMG 6575

I love it too.

IMG 6578

Lunch was the normal (I swear I can never get sick of sweet potatoes) and this is what I am snacking on while chatting with you:

IMG 6580

I wanted to share with you Josse’s homemade fuel that she uses on her long runs.  I have tasted it before and it is quite delicious!

IMG 6376

2-3 TB of coconut oil

10 Medjool dates (pit removed)

The juice and zest of 1 lemon, 1-2 limes and 1 orange (or 2-3 clementines)

1/4 tsp fine sea salt

1-2 TB of nut butter (if you want some protein

Blend in a good blender or food processor.  You can add different flavors too like mocha, vanilla, coconut etc.

She uses a little pill bag to put them in and stores them in the freezer (they last for a very long time)!.

——————————————————————————————-

What have you been snacking on today or lately?  Are you much of a snacker?

Are you a creature of habit or do you branch out much with your meals?

Your reasons why the treadmill isn’t so bad?  Or is it?

I love to try new things, but I don’t have a ton of extra time to try out new recipes, so we eat alot of the same things that are tried and true. Boring, but effective.

I love the treadmill. That doesn’t mean I get excited about every run on it, but the convenience wins out for me quite often. Running outside feels easier after doing so many runs on the treadmill. Plus I get to catch up on the Bachelor and other trashy reality TV.

Oranges have been my snack of choice lately. They are so good right now!

I think I needed to read the dear treadmill letter since I’ll be running on it at least a few more times before the weather clears up! I’m one of the ones who really hates it because I feel like it makes me hate running! If anything, the mental toughness part is why I SHOULD run on it once in a while :)

Reply

I’ve been using the treadmill a lot lately because it is just too cold and too unsafe most days to run here, especially too slick to do speed work outside! I even did my mile repeats on the treadmill yesterday also. I’d always prefer to run outside but running on the treadmill sure beats running on ice/not running at all and I don’t even have to leave the house!
I’m currently snacking on celery and Washington apples with peanut butter. Best snack ever!

Good thoughts for the treadmill, Janae! I love your positive attitude.

My friend wrote (what I think) is a great article on appreciating the treadmill more!

Thank you for sharing that letter… it was hilarious and awesome and just what I needed! Hope you are having a great day!

Glad you liked it! Happy Day to you too.

Today my snacks have been chocolate….and chocolate. oh boy!

I’m a total creature of habit.

The treadmill is good for speed and hill workouts. And for not having to deal with the slope of the road.

Reply

I did mile repeats today, too!
Snack: popcorn popped in coconut oil
I am definitely a creature of habit, but I love working up new dinner recipes.
I don’t love the treadmill, but I’m so thankful for it when the weather is bad.

Reply

Treadmill = the best because you can people watch (yessss), watch Parenthood on Netflix on the iPad, and zone without having to pace yourself.

I really am a creature of habit. To a fault. I seriously eat 2 sweet potatoes a day, too many apples, and more popcorn and gum than any human should. And I’m happy with it :).

Have an amazing night, send some of that popcorn through the computer please. Kay, great, thanks.

Reply

I eat too much gum + apples, too!

I hate the treadmill, but I’ve come to appreciate it as I’m recovering from my injury. It helps me work on speed which I wouldn’t be able to do on my own. I also can jump on/off and stretch or do another form of cardio if it’s not going well. I am guilty of being a habit junkie. When something throws a wrench in my plans, I get annoyed. Snack lately has been zucchini oatmeal cookies. So so so so so so good!!!

THANK YOU for this post. It could not have come at a better time. I am about to head down to the gym in my office building to hop on the treadmill to complete my 800s inside due to unpleasant weather conditions. I seriously dislike the treadmill (and often refer to it as the “dreadmill”), but will try to think positively for my run today. Thanks again for the post!

Reply

You are welcome Krista! Now go rock your 800s and let me know how they go!!!!

Reply

800s were ok! I tried to repeat your positive thoughts in my head throughout the run. Can’t say I’m on your level for positivity, but it definitely helped! :)

Reply

I’m working on cutting down on snacking or at least make healthier choices! I am a total creature of habit with my eating… Really, really predictable. I used your Blue Apron code and it’s helping me bust out of the dinnertime rut though! My breakfast and lunch ruts don’t need busting ;-)

Reply

I’m definitely a creature of habit. I’ve been amazing on Greek yogurt and fruit or sweet potato with pb. :) have a wonderful rest of the week!

Reply

i like the treadmill in the winter because of all the reasons you said but it also helps with my asthma. I wouldn’t be able to run in the winter if I didn’t have the treadmill.

Reply

I love that letter and can appreciate how a treadmill can make life so much easier. I am really happy you have that option. Running is your life!

I ran on one for 6+ years but sadly, we had to break up. My body gets injured while running on a machine so for me it’s outdoor running or indoor track. I am totally OK w/ that if it means breaking my injury cycle.

Love my snacks. Trail mix mid morning and peanut butter toast + carrots around 3 pm (oh yeah, and something sweet after dinner–OF COURSE)

Creature of habit when it comes to meals, too. I actually really don’t mind but thought I would try to change it up a bit so that is why my new year goal was one new recipe/week. And it’s been fun. Tonight we are having a halibut dish!

Reply

I like the treadmill because I don’t have cable, so I get to actually watch tv if I’m on the treadmill! Plus, I love that the gym is temperature controlled so you don’t have to worry about wind, rain, snow….

I’ll have to try that homemade gu! Sounds yummy

Reply

Snacking on homemade turkey burgers lately and air popped popcorn always. More of a “just have another small meal” type of girl. Porridge with pears, raspberries and walnuts fills the void too.
I live in the East Coast of Nova Scotia so the treadmill is necessay sometimes. It is just not always safe to run outside and so not worth it to risk injury.
I totally branch out with my meals. I have homemade “taco and beef baked beans” in the slow cooker right now. Just wanted something different. Hope they taste as good as they smell!

Reply

The treadmill is a flat and even surface so better than roads for maintaining correct form!

Reply

Nailed it Deirdre! Thank you for reminding me of this!

Reply

Today I have snacked on a clementine orange, half a Weight watchers string cheese, and (3) Lindt truffle chocolates. I should have only had the first two. I have been constantly drinking water all day in my cubicle.

I am definitely a creature of habit when it comes to my meals. I don’t go outside of the box at all really.

I am doing the c25k app on the treadmill – that’s the only way I can get through it OR put a tv show on through Netflix. That makes the mindless walking a little bit more bearable.

Reply

I love sweet potatoes so much I’m going to turn orange. Way to rock your treadmill run! You are going to run an amazing race in Boston :) I love that she makes her own Gu! That sounds amazing!

Reply

I’ve been eating Medjool dates and homemade almond butter. It is getting out of hand, so I had to move the almond butter out of sight.

I never had a problem on the treadmill until I started running with a friend. Then whenever I had to run on one I hated it. I find myself having to change my perspective and psych myself up whenever it’s a treadmill day (which is often in Chicago), so this post was well timed. I am also ramping up the running bc I have a half to run in May, but hopefully it warms up some here so I can get outside too!

Reply

I really like the idea of making my own fuel! I have a box of vanilla Gu to go through first but will look into this after!

Reply

You’re so lucky to have a treadmill, Janae! And a body that will allow it! :) I wish I had one. Winter decided to show up in Dallas, too, and being treadmill-less and gym-less, I pretty much haven’t run in two weeks except for one 20 miler (and almost fell on the ice in the dark).

I used to like treadmill running when there was something stimulating, like hill intervals. Or people watching so i couldn’t wimp out. :). Now that I’m old, haha, I have been tearing my hip flexors when I use the treadmill, so even if I had the money, I wouldn’t be able to use one.

Next time you dread the treadmill, think of me, being jealous of you! :)

Reply

Nearby bathroom, water bottle and child care at the gym- top three reasons I know the treadmill has my back!

Reply

Great tips on loving the treadmill! I love how you see the silver lining in everything, it is so inspiring. I will probably be using the treadmill more now after getting heat exhaustion sickness from running in the sun the other day! I am all about putting a sock over the time section otherwise I just watch the minutes crawl by :)

Reply

I can read while running on the TM too–it’s a special talent we must have ;)

Brooke’s cute exclamation about Christmas is just darling!

Reply

I have a treadmill trick to get it over 60 minutes…not sure if you’ve tried it. Right as it’s forcing you to end and counting down the last few seconds increase the speed by continuing to press the speed button up. Instead of going to 0.0 and ending it will stay on that speed and keep going. Or at least at my gym I can trick it! #treadmillhack

Reply

that’s awesome! I’m going to try it!

Reply

The fact Josse makes her own Gu is freaking awesome. Haha! Sorry to be blunt, but seriously! That’s dedication and money-saving smarts! She’s totally beating the system ;o)

I love the treadmill because… runner’s squats… it happens sometimes.

Reply

i have always wanted to make my own gu! i know people who use honey instead of gu but i always thought that would be way to sweet.

Reply

How did Josse do on the half-marathon last weekend with you? I love that homemade gel idea.

Treadmill question:

Does anyone else get vertigo-ish after a treadmill workout? I’m mostly able to avoid the treadmill, but when I need to use it, when I stop I’m kind of “woozy” and it feels like everything is moving around me. I get over it within a minute or two, but it’s kind of unpleasant.

Reply

Peal off layers of clothing at will.
I optimally want to start a run in a hooded sweatshirt and end up in a sports bra, that’s a lot of retracing steps to find all that hidden clothes.

Reply

I never get sick of sweet potatoes either! haha

Reply

I am a major snacker. Popcorn and wasabi peas are my favorite.

I am a creature of habit… especially when it comes to breakfast and lunch. I venture out a little with dinners.

I HATE treadmill miles. I know it’s in my head, but they feel 1000x harder than just being out on the road.

And thank you for the Gu recipe! I am excited to try it!!

Reply

I try really hard to keep the positive treadmill thinking going! I was able to run outdoors this morning but won’t be able to again until at least Friday so I am sticking to the positive stuff like yes, having the bathroom nearby, access to my water plus the television to look at.

Reply

Ive been cutting up peppers, carrots and celery and stocking my fridge with healthy crunchy foods to snack on. It really helps when work gets crazy and I need easy meals on the go. Especially when work is nuts I eat the same thing all week -keep it simple!

Reply

I always hated running on the treadmill, until YOU gave me the idea to read while treadmill-running. I think that is what helped to keep me so motivated during my training. So for that, thank you!

Reply

woo way to be positive girl.!! awe I’m sad that it’s not christmas also :( lol

I love snacking, but I usually don’t do it till after work, in the afternoon, when I really shouldn’t. lol. Popcorn is always my go to, but I also have this huge love for lays chips with Lime on them, Popcorn with lime also.!

Reply

Podcasts are seriously a life saver when it comes to the treadmill. Storytelling podcasts are the best because they completely remove you from whatever world you happen to be occupying, and they really work your empathy muscles too. I’m that creepy girl and the gym who’s simultaneously laughing and crying while she runs. Love it.
Dried mango is my addiction. I eat way too much of it. :)

Reply

I love sweet potatoes, but my go-to snack is always carrots/celery with either hummus or almond butter depending on if I’m craving sweet vs savory. Basically, I just like to use vegetables as a vehicle for my cravings lol.

I need to try that gel! I hate all the preservatives/artificial colors and what not that are in most regular brands.

I have come to love the treadmill (especially over this past winter) for basically 2 reasons 1. I can watch my favorite tv shows without feeling like I’m wasting time 2. I have control over the speed/incline which makes prescribed workouts easier to follow and keeps me honest about my speed (I have a tendency to run way too fast if I’m outside and the screen is not right in front of me). Running outside will always be the preference though – nothing like fresh air!

Reply

What are those steak strips?! I’m so intrigued!!!!! I’ve been snacking on the sabra greek yogurt dips. THEY ARE AMAZING!!!!!!

Reply

Yes, thank you for showing some treadmill love!

While it’s not my first choice, I am so grateful for the treadmill, without it I simply could not run most days due to safety reasons. It actually bothers me when people call it the dreadmill, it fin it disrespectful to all of the people who have no other choice than to make the most of it.

Gooddddd choice with the Jerky! It is embarrassing how much money I spend on Costco Jerky. But compared to most jerky it’s totally a bargain right :)

Reply

i screen shot the GU recipe. Looks bummy and I’m always looking for new ideas for fuel!

Reply

Thanks for the reminders of why I should/need to love the treadmill. I am not always a fan but it’s gotten better.

Reply

I don’t mind the treadmill for all the reasons you have listed as well as I can sleep in a bit longer since I don’t have to drive 20 minutes for a “safe” outdoor area to run. I am able to entertain myself in my own head pretty well most days (LOL sure sign of insanity) I don’t even listen to music when I run I like to meditate on my breathing. I learned this from outdoor runs when having to listen for traffic, dogs etc. and now it is the norm for me.
I am very hungry today!

Reply

I’m a continuous snacker. Like, every waking hour. My favorites include wasabi almonds, hummus and veggies, tuna on crackers, popcorn, and fruit salad. Also M&Ms, but trying to quit that.

Thanks for sharing the homemade gu recipe! I’m totally trying that out because the store-bought stuff doesn’t always agree with my tummy, and I’ve been told that it can coat the stomach and block other nutrients/electrolytes from being absorbed. But that’s just hearsay. I can’t find any research on it.

Over the last year I’ve come to embrace the treadmill. I do some critical workouts during the workday and the TM is a way safer alternative than running around downtown Oakland where I work. Plus, I can do serious speed workouts that crowds of people and stoplights otherwise impede.

Reply

I go through spurts of snacking.. right now I’m more eating bigger meals and less snacking. I’ve only went on the treadmill once this year and I hope to keep it that way.. I can’t stand it! The only good I get out of it is that I always go super fast because it forces me to hold the pace I set. Also, loving that homemade gu! I’m always looking for more ways to be as natural as possible!

Reply

I love the idea of listing the reasons why you LOVE something to change your perspective on it :) I love the treadmill because I can watch tv while walking/running.. um, awesome! :)

Reply

The treadmill is good because you don’t have to worry about carrying pepper spray, wearing reflective gear or wearing a Road ID to stay safe on your run!

Reply

I want to try that homemade fuel! Sounds delicious!

Reply

Ahh my meals are so weird/random these days. Apparently all I can tolerate is some type of carb with cheese (string cheese and pretzels, laughing cow cheese and pretzels…you get the idea) & fruit.
Haven’t hung out with the treadmill in soooo long :( I have been on bed rest due to hyperemesis gravidarum so I haven’t been able to exercise at all in like 8+weeks. I just recently got my picc line removed though & things are improving a bit so I’m hoping to get the OK to at least go for a walk soon. Until then I will live vicariously through your blog!

Reply

Biggest snacker EVER. I love apples, pumpkin seeds and protein bars. :)

Reply

Love this! Sometimes it really helps to just see exactly why something we secretly hate is actually beneficial. It’s all about perspective!

I’m so trying that homemade gu one day in the near future! I stopped taking gels because they didn’t sit well and only eat Shot Bloks, but I’m open to the return of gel!

Reply

I am a snack addict! Chips, popcorn, grapes, chocolate, gummies…the list goes on…

I try to branch out from time to time with meals, but most of the time there are a lot of meal repeats.

There is so much treadmill hate out there, it was nice to see something positive! :) I like having the treadmill as an option for bad weather days and when I’m running alone and just want to watch tv

Reply

That was so cute about Brook and the snow!
I’m definitely pro-treadmill all the way. So convenient. So safe. There is no way I could run as much as I do if I didn’t have one.

Reply

THANK YOU FOR YOUR POSITIVITY! you’re such an inspiration! =]

snackage fo’ life. carrots and hummus, almonds, etc.// branch out!!!// treadmill= not bad because it’s soooo cold and sloppy outside. also, i can watch tv, which i don’t have at home! hello, e! news :]

Reply

The snow today was crazy! Utah weather is so weird ha! I am not a huge snacker most of the time, I just like big meals. I am definitely a creature of habit, but I do like change, if it is the right kind of change ha! I am actually a big fan of my treadmill. I love that it gives me the opportunity to run when I otherwise wouldn’t be able to, and I also love that I can watch my shows while I run or simply jam out to music and not worry about life for a little bit.

Reply

DUDE. I have no idea how you go that fast for an entire mile on the treadmill. YOU ARE QUEEN.

Reply

I cannot get over my hate of the treadmill. Maybe now that I’m running more, I could knock out a short run on it, but I’d just rather run outside any day.

Reply

Thanks for your post about the advantages of treadmill running!! It migh be a good idea to do my threshold runs on the treadmill. I will give it a try :) Cheers Lisbeth

That homemade GU recipe is fascinating! I’ve been having such a tough time finding my GU gels here in Europe and I’m kicking myself for not buying a box or two to take with me before I left Canada. Anyway, the other night, I started looking up recipes and they all sounded too difficult to make due to lack of access to ingredients like brown rice syrup. This one seems like it could happen… but then, I don’t really know how I’d blend up the dates without a blender. Dammit!

ps. I never looked at the treadmill as a mental strength building tool until you brought it up. I was always so surprised that I could never last on it for longer than 30 minutes, but now it all makes sense. ;)

Reply

That is awesome! I had a very hard time getting on the treadmill yeasterday so I ended up outside which was heavenly! Sometimes the mental block is too
Much!

Reply

Hi Janae! I was wondering if you set the treadmill so it can go for longer than 60 minutes, or if it just happens to be that way? I am a big treadmill runner in the wiNter and having to reset it before it automatically goes into cool down mode is my only complaint!

Reply

I’m definitely a snacker. I LOVE me some Wheat Thins. I could literally snack on those almost all day…and sometimes I do.

I am pretty much a creature of habit when it comes to what I eat. I know what I want, and I tend to order the same things at the restaurants I frequent. Sometimes they even already know my exact order…

Lately I have learned to appreciate the treadmill more and not look at it as this awful piece of equipment that will cause me suffering. If you do what you did and focus on the positives, it’s a much more pleasant experience!

Reply

I read this post minutes before I hopped on the dreadmill. Thank you so much for positive spin. It made the run bearable, almost enjoyable. Almost.

Reply

wow great information all about iron! my friend is going through this right now so i will share this with her!

i just got done with the ‘whole 30’ and while the first few days were rough during workouts because my body was detoxing, i’ve found that cutting out white flour and processed sugars as really helped! i sort of wish this wasn’t the case because i bought 3 things of girl scout cookies but….ha!

Reply

Homemade GU? The stuff is expensive, but I’m kinda scared to try anything else because I know it works.

Reply

Yogurt covered raisins and dark chocolate covered almonds have been my BFF for the past few weeks.

I am a creature of habit when it comes to meals. Recently branched out and made homemade chicken salad with greek yogurt.

I try to avoid the treadmill. I feel like the air is too still and I feel overheated easily. I crave the outdoors.

That homemade GU looks like an amazing idea. Where does she get the bags to put the gu in? Also, how messy is it getting it in the bags and eating it while running? I am really curious, I might be trying this for my LR this weekend.

Reply

I thank my treadmill when I dread using it too. The weather here has just been too cold, snowy and slippery to safely run outside regularly. I am dry, warm, have a bathroom merely feet away and I can watch a movie of my choosing.

I love Beanitos chips – they’re made from beans and have both protein & fiber. They’re corn and gluten free, so good with salsa and guacamole.

I only eat oatmeal regularly and I change the toppings on it fairly often. I’d be unhappy if I ate the same thing every day.

^^ Janice, those can be found on amazon, I ordered them before Ironman Louisville last year to store BASE salts and ibuprophen for the bike split, they come in really handy and you get 100 of them for like 6-8 dollars. As for the homemade gels, is that recipe for one? Or just smush as much into each bag as possible and go.

I’ve made potato gels for Ironman before, because sickeningly sweet stuff gets real old after about 4 hours on the bike, so I make potato gels and drink Osmo or Skratch on the bike, and save the sweet gels for the marathon portion.

Reply

Thank you Julie!! That sounds great. I get sick of the sugary GUs as well. You should share more of your fueling recipes, I would love to know more. Thanks for sharing.

Reply

Love the idea of making your own gu! I’ve been wanting to experiment with doing that using chia seeds. Great reasons to love the treadmill!

Ok. I hate the dreadmill. I am so much faster and can run for longer outside. But, one of your points, I may be able to get through my brain: “For building up my mental toughness. Running miles and miles on the treadmill and staying focused when it can get quite boring will make Boston easy right;)” I just substitute, make ANYTHING easy…

BTW, what headbands do you use? They tend to slip off of my head. Thanks!!

Reply

I’m a huge snacker! I love popcorn, Sabra’s pine nut hummus, and those 100 calorie nut packs from Emerald.

I am a creature of habit. I try to force myself out of my self-imposed food comfort zone as much as possible. I don’t like avocados, but I’m trying to like them since they are so good for you. I also hate seafood but my whole family loves it so I’m trying to find ways to season it so I will want to eat it.

I primarily love to run outside. But I do have an incline treadmill. I enjoy the treadmill for the sames reasons you talked about. But what I love about my treadmill is that it goes up to a 40% incline. I enjoy challenging my running with some good, deep hill running.

Thank you so much for this post! After a long, hard winter in upstate, NY, my hubs has finally assembled my treadmill and I hopped back on it today. They really aren’t that bad, are they?
My snack of choice lately has been either popcorn mixed with chocolate chips, or a yam mixed with plain greek yogurt and honey. I’m a huge snacker and I like to mix up my meals. I never used to, when I had an eating disorder, but now that I’m recovered, no food is off limits.
I love my treadmill because Mother Nature is making me angry, and you’re right — there is always a bathroom and water nearby!

Yes with this horrible winter weather we’ve been having in Maryland, it’s great to have treadmills downstairs in my building!
