Another 16 miler to add to the training log for Boston. A gorgeous morning with some speedy friends who kept me on my toes.
At about mile 11 we were all ridiculously thirsty and none of the drinking fountains on the trail were working. It was like a March 22nd Miracle because just around the bend the nicest guy was setting up water coolers and gave us some cups to fill up with perfectly chilled water. It couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
We finished with an average pace of 7:39 and my legs were pretty spent by the end. I just remind myself that this is just a natural part of the peak weeks of marathon training. Your legs should be tired and heavy at this point because that means you worked them hard exactly when you needed to and you will rest them properly during the taper exactly when you need to.
Had some breakfast and a few hours later a salad with a turkey burger, cranberries, feta, almonds and a sweet potato with guac. Yes, I do in fact add guacamole to every food that I eat these days. Next up, it is going on my eggs.
We’ve been on a mission to find the coolest parks in town. This pirate ship one is ranking pretty high on our list!
Our night entertainment sent us up to the University of Utah to watch the Pac 12 Women’s Gymnastics Tournament.
These athletes… WOW.
I just want to brag about my amazing friend TOBY… she completed (rocked) her first 50 MILER!!! She even did it two hours faster than her goal time!! She inspires me big time. And buffalo kind of scare me.
HAPPY SUNDAY!!!

Your run routes are gorgeous!
And you rocked your long run pace!
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
I swear Utah has some of the best views ever. I hiked for the first time yesterday morning in a year and remembered how much my legs love the trails not to mention the views are amazing! I know where I’m gonna be every weekend. Happy Sunday!
Tiffany @ The Chi-Athlete
What a fine Saturday! I’m going to put it on my list to go see a gymnastics meet.:)
I put guac on everything, too!<3<3<3
Linda @ TheFitty
You live in a beautiful place to go running, I must say! And when you say your legs are heavy and tired, do you mean the same feeling after an intense pylo HIIT routine or legs day, the jello-like feeling? For some reason I could never run long enough to feel like that–I always get blisters on my feet before that happens!
Are you usually sore the next day with runs like these?
Nicole@thegirlwhoraneverywhere
Great job on your long run, amazing! I love the area that you run, it’s so pretty. I wish I had trails like that around me!
Jessica @ VEGGIE RUNNING MOMMA
Good job to your friend and you.!! Both rocking long tough runs. :)
Happy Sunday to you too.!!
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
I can’t get over the mountains every time I see them in your pictures! I used to LOVE watching gymnastics on television as a kid. I was never flexible but I loved to see the routines, especially in the Olympics.
Laur
LOL is Brooke holding a selfie stick or some kind of noise maker???
mary @ minutes per mile
wow, a 50-miler is impressive! and shaving TWO HOURS off an expected finish time?! incredible. congrats to your friend!
Middleaged Runner
That’s a killer pace for a 16- looks like you are on point for a sub 3. Very exciting!
Suzy
I agree!!! That sub-3 is in the bag.
Polly @ mytimerunner
Yes, in deed!!! You rocked those 16 miles!!!! I agree, definitely a sub-3 in a couple of weeks!!! Exciting!!!
Jenni
Am I missing something? Wouldn’t a 7:39 avg. pace equate to a 3:20 marathon?
Polly @ mytimerunner
Most likely that isn’t her race pace, long runs are usually ran at a 30sec or minute slower pace……. I bet she pulls the sub 3 out! I only wish I could run that pace! My fastest half marathon time is 2:08:14… of course I am 40+ and only running for 2 years… I admire runners like her!
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff
Happy Sunday to you! It’s a beautiful cool spring day here in New York. If my knee cooperates I’ll be running at the beach for 8 miles. I’m pre icing now. Lol.
I’m fascinated by gymnastics. My boyfriends 9 year old daughter can do things on a balance beam that just amaze me.
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
That water was a pretty serious miracle! I don’t know how many times I’ve been on a long run and wished for something like that! I agree that running with speedier friends is nice once in a while as a challenge! Getting pretty excited for you for the next few weeks!
Chelsea @ runner's table
Great job on your long run, and congrats to your friend on the 50 miler! I love antelope island, but the bison scare me, too…I’ve considered doing the half there, though.
Hannah @ hannah goes running
Oh wow, I can only dream of doing a 16 miler at that pace! You really do inspire me to keep training (cheesy I know!). That was also so nice of that guy, living in London I don’t see many random acts of kindness! :-)
Also, where did you get your great orange top from? I love how bright it is!
kristin | W [H] A T C H
that is a march miracle!
Kay @ goaloflosing.com
Beautiful views! I think your blog makes many people want to move to Utah (it’s become one of my top 5 places I want to visit, now!)
Gretchen//gretchruns
That view is beautiful! Sounds like you are Ready to crush boston :) can’t wait to cheer you on and see how you do! And yay for march miracles!
Toby
Thanks for the shout out Janae! I’m so grateful for all the awesome cheerleaders who have supported me along the way…YOU! It was an amazing day, but I can hardly walk this morning. Ouch!
Kristina @ Blog About Running
Congrats Toby! You are awesome! What an amazing accomplishment!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes
Great job on your long run- what an awesome pace! I love all the bright pink tops you and your running buddies are wearing, the colors are so spring-y!
Therese
I run with water on runs as low as six miles. I never could run without water. You are a machine..
Jenni
Wow – do a lot of people run that route for that guy to randomly be setting up water coolers?…or is he stalking you guys? :)
Do you have any recommendations for compression socks – type, brand ?
jade
Nice long run!! I think that is so sweet that some random person sets up a water cooler for anyone that needs it!
I’ve only seen buffalo in the zoo so seeing them out in that field is just so cool!
Joanna @Crazy Runner Girl
This post reminds me of when I did a 22 miler and none of the water fountains were working…the nicest running group let me have some water, gatorade, and peanut butter filled pretzels. Which were really great fuel.
I have run into cows mid-run and been terrified….so I can’t imagine buffalo!
Nona @ RunningHigh
That pace is crazy for a long run! Way to go! And congrats to your friend! I can’t ever imagine running more than a marathon. That distance kills me!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse
I love gymnastic meets!! Wow a 50 miler! That is incredible! Way to go Toby!
Kim @ RunningLife&Chocolate
My husband saw buffalo while out on his bike ride yesterday! Lol he said he looked over and was like…well hello buffalo :) buffalo in Amish country…you wouldn’t think…
Kayse
Happy Sunday to you! What a beautiful run! I woke up early because my nephew stayed the night and we went out to get some yummy face pancakes for breakfast. Now I’m back home for a nap- kids are tiring!!! Gonna do a slow and easy run later today!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out
Guacamole + eggs is sooooogfood! You have to try it!!
Jacqueline @ Mam On The Run
Great run for you today! Well done. That is so funny you see buffalo on your run. I can’t imagine running 50 miles. After my rubbish run today, I’m struggling to make 5.
Alisha @ Real Girl Running
FYI Avocado and eggs is AWESOME! You have to try it!!
Sounds like things are coming together for Boston … so excited for you!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul

I hope that water man knows that he is a saint! ;)
That park IS looking pretty cool!
And…way to go Toby! Congrats! That is awesome!
BriAnne
Four things:
1. You are a speed demon! Like seriously, can I be you??!!
2. That salad…I’m drooling! Your salad talents are unparalleled, sister.
3. Please oh please can I tag along the next time you go to this park? Amazing!! (I guess I’ll bring the kids to play in it too haha!)
4. Please tell me you swung by the dental school while you were up there too…;)
5. Oops, I guess 5…I cried when I had to put scrubs on instead of gym clothes last Thursday morning. #rideorcry
Shannon
Gymnastics is so amazing! I could never do moves like that. Also, you are so fast! I hope that I can someday be CLOSE to how fast you run your miles!
have a great day!
tess
Nice job on the run, Miss Thing. You are SO strong now.
I think there is great karma out there for the water elf. So kind! It gives you the warm fuzzies.
Jilly
Eggs & avocado on toast is the best!! (…”are” the best maybe?) I love spreading the avocado on and topping it with scrambled or boiled eggs. So good.
Heather @ GirlGoesRunning
Your running routes are incredibly beautiful! My running routes are still packed with a lot of snow and ice. Nova Scotia got hit very hard this year so Boston training has been a challenge, but I am getting it done. :)
I have those exact same compression socks as your friend. :)
I really hope to see you at Boston at some point, although I realize you will have tons of fans and meet ups. I know you will rock your marathon and I can’t wait to hear all about it!
Shawna
that pace for a long run is something out of my wildest dreams! and those skies. amazing.
Melissa
What a beautiful morning for a run! Gorgeous :)
I’m in awe of the 50 miler’s !! AMAZING!
Emily
That’s such beautiful scenery! And I love the story about the water coolers. God’s always watching out for us. ;)
Tara
WOW 2 hours faster than she had expected? AMAZING job TOBY!!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job
Guacamole in eggs sounds amazing.
Also, I love gymnastics. It is one of my biggest regrets that I never picked it up again when I moved as a kid.
Kay
Congrats on a great long run! And that salad looks delicious!
