Boston Training Week #2, an important lesson and 98 DAYS!

Another way that Brooke is supporting my marathon training:

She understands my constant hunger from upping my mileage and makes sure to feed me her food too.

DSC 1245

My mom recreated (minus the coleslaw + lots of veggies) my favorite meal from Disneyland—>  baked potato with bbq chicken.  She used THIS recipe and it was so good.

Brooke has taught me many valuable lessons over the last 29 months.

One of these important lessons—> adding sprinkles to a dessert always takes it to the next level.

We were in charge of bringing dessert to our family dinner, Rice Krispy Treats for the win.

IMG 3790 2

And I am really excited about the fact that I have a brand new bag of popcorn.  This Costco sized bag may last me 2.7 days!

Candice sent this to me yesterday!  That means we are 98 DAYS AWAY FROM BOSTON!!!!   WAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!

IMG 3781 2

Here is how last week’s training went:

Monday:  10 mile progressive run.  Started with an 8:12 mile and finished with a 6:46 mile.  Average pace—> 7:40

Tuesday:  8 miles @ 8:34

Wednesday:  Yasso 800s.  10 x 800 (or .5 miles) with an average of 3:06 with recoveries (.3-.5 miles each) in between each interval. 10 miles total.

Thursday:  Spin

Friday:  6 miles @ 8:20 pace and lots of foam rolling.

Saturday:  16 miles @ 8:16.  My ONE and only run outside for the week.  That is just not okay.

Monday and Saturday’s runs didn’t feel great but the ones sandwiched in between felt awesome!

50 miles total for week #2.

PS for those of you running Boston, here is an AWESOME list of articles about the marathon.  I have been loving playing around with the Boston Marathon Pace Calculator!

Last week was my first training week in over a year! It felt so great. I have a long way to go but one day I’ll be posting about Boston training. No doubt.

Reply

That is so awesome Ashley that you had your first week of training. YOU WILL be posting about Boston soon! Have a great day!

Reply

I have a half in less than 2 week that I’m not really trained for, so kind of dreading it a bit! Dinner last night was roasted potatoes with chicken thighs and collard greens. That bbq chicken your mom made looks insanely delicious!

Reply

My next race is May 2, so I still have a ways to go!

My favorite run last week was my long run. Only 12 miles, but it felt really good.

I’m most looking forward to finishing our bathroom renovation so I don’t have to run downstairs everytime I need the bathroom!

Dinner last night was pizza, which was average, but then we finished with brownies and Ice cream, which was awesome!

Reply

Boston is my next big race! I’m sure I’ll sign Up for a few smaller races:)
Crappy training while I’m healing my Achilles,…I’ve never spent this much time on the bike in my life!dinner: Caesar salad with a quinoa veggie patty on top.

Reply

Girl, I am so sorry about your Achilles… I am hoping it feels 100% asap!

Reply

Thank you!! I’m going to baby it for a couple of weeks…fingers crossed it heals quickly:)

Reply

I have about 4 weeks until my next half and my training last week was awesome. 48 miles.

The only thing that could be better is this runny nose from Exercise Induced Rhinitis, HATE IT.

Last night, I made an awesome chicken casserole.

Reply

The Miami Half Marathon is my next race and it’s less than 2 weeks away now! After taking all of last week off from running due to a calf strain I am excited to get back to it this week!!!

Reply

16 miler on the trails this weekend but they were covered in snow so I was really playing hopscotch for 16 miles. That was fun, urrrgh, NOT!

50 miles?!?!?! Daaang girl, your weekly mileage is getting up there!!!

Reply

Awesome training week!

I don’t have a goal race just yet….but I need to find one to focus on so I can lose my Boston run jealousy (I qualified but didn’t make the more stringent 1:02 under qualifying time. Ugh.

That food looks amazing!

Reply

Those are some tough workouts! Your progressive 10 on Monday is so impressive, as are your Yasso splits. When I’d do Yasso 800’s I’d work my way up to repeats of 10. I think I started at 4 repeats on my first week of training. You’re going to do SO well at Boston! Awesome.

Reply

Are you still doing your PT exercises in addition to your marathon training. Just curious how you are preventing injury.

Reply

Sounds like training is going well! I’m not signed up for any races until June. I was going to do more, but life keeps getting away from me!

Reply

the exact same number of days until your next race! (ok, it’s the same race.)

Reply

Only 61 days until the Rock N’ Roll DC Half and then 103 days until the Country Music Marathon! Woohoo!
Training went very well last week. I was feeling sore and tired, but my long run helped me bounce back and I feel great now!
I’m looking forward to my 9 mile run on Saturday. I feel so ready for it and my legs are itching to do it!
Dinner was BBQ Pulled Pork. It was delicious!

Reply

Dinner was blackened tilapia, asparagus, and roasted sweet potatoes…. YUM.
I can’t say that any of my runs from last week were memorable… Being confined to the treadmill is NOT enjoyable for me :(

Reply

I’ve got about … 2 weeks to marathon #4. I haven’t trained for it at all. It’s the New Orleans Rock-n-Roll marathon so I’m just going to go and have FUN! Probably walk/run 10 minute intervals. As long as I come in under the time limit I’m good!

Reply

We had a big late lunch so dinner was a bowl of air popped popcorn with the Golden Globes!

Reply

My next race will be the first weekend of November and it will be my FIRST half marathon! Ah! But I am running the Wine and Dine at Disney, so I am sure I will survive. ;)

The rice crispy treats look divine! Drool…

Reply

I’m still in my off season, but will start my next training cycle in a few weeks. I’ve loved having more free time and giving my body the chance to rest, but I’m also excited to get started in training again!

Reply

This week I am definitely most looking forward to college football playoffs tonight and then running in temperatures that aren’t freezing in the morning! We are supposed to hit the 50s this week–WOOHOO!! I hate cold weather.

LOVE the pics with your sweet little girl. She is just too precious. :)

Reply

I don’t know when my next race is because I haven’t decided yet! I am thinking though that my next half will be in April…My runs last week were great – half inside on the treadmill, half outside…This week thankfully the weather is at or above freezing allowing me to run outside without freezing or worrying about ice.

Reply

Wow – those rice krispies….they are the key to my heart!!

Reply

Janae, is there any way you would post your full training plan for us to see? I know that life happens and weeks end up getting modified on the fly, but I’m curious to see what type of plan a runner as fast as you is following for marathon training (as it is much different than what I followed last year when preparing for SF!)

Reply

are you following a training plan, or just making it up as you go? i thought i remember you mentioning working with a coach for boston?

Reply

Hey Ida! I am following a training plan. My coach is giving it to me week by week. I will share more about her later this week! Have a great day.

Reply

The weather has been seriously interfering with my training, so I giving myself a little break since Im not really training for anything anyway. But I am hoping that the weather improves this week so I can get outside for a run at some point!

Reply

My dinner last night was Italian sausages with homemade coleslaw and macaroni salad :-) I want my BBQ back!

My runs last week were minimal – 2 runs on the treadmill. I’m hoping the weather warms up soon!

Reply

43 days until my next big race. I have another in town 1/2 scheduled at the end of the month, but I’m really just using that as a training run :)

I am pretty frustrated with training because I’m dealing with some PF issues :(

I am most looking forward to Friday night: family night. I think we are either taking the kiddos to see Paddington or having a major Mario Kart 8 race off!

Dinner last night was roasted chicken and veggies

Reply

I’m hoping my next race will be the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago in March!

Reply

I don’t have a race until a 10k in April, which definitely has its positives (no pressure to keep up with stringent training plans) and negatives (possibility of getting a little lazy with staying on top of training). Training wasn’t too great last week because the weather was just awful and our gym was still on break hours, so I didn’t accomplish too much. That’s ok, I’ll bounce back this week. :) Pizza for dinner last night–yum!

Reply

Last night’s dinner was supposed to be stuffed peppers but a friend brought pizza. So, of course, I ate pizza:-)

Reply

What a STRONG week for you! That’s so great! I missed one of my training runs last week, but I think I made up for it with the quality of the runs I did make, so no big deal!

My dinner last night was Chinese! My inlaws had us over for dinner and ordered in sesame chicken and beef & broccoli, it had been WAY too long since I’d had Chinese food!

Reply

I think my next “race” ~I say with a half chuckle~ is the Heavy Half here in Colorado. We were supposed to do it last year but my husband ended up going to Afghanistan so we’re doing it this year. I think it’s more of a hike though. Yikes. 7.5 miles straight up and it’s at serious altitude. I don’t mind altitude but this is altitude+.

I love the chicken thing you shared from Disney even though I don’t do barbecue. I’m thinking a knockoff would be a great plan. That looks SO good over baked potatoes.

Reply

my next race is feb 21 but my next marthon is 4/26 so probably 105 days away approx. too lazy to do the math. Lol.
I made it thru week 1 of training. Ran 7 on Saturday afternoon and was just plain happy!

I’m looking forward to my freelance photography gig on Friday. I am shooting an engagement party.
Dinner last night was left over Chinese. String beans rice and dumplings.

Reply

haha such a good idea to add sprinkles to your rice krispies!! love it. And I def want to try bbq and a baked potato… that sounds so good!

Reply

My next race isn’t until the end of March. Its a half, so I haven’t really started training yet- the half marathon training plan I usually follow is only 8 weeks.

Dinner last night was a big salad with chopped chicken and buffalo sauce.

Reply

I’m looking forward to running more. But I just overslept :/ oh and college football championships. !! Goo ducks.

Last night I had a huggee veggie burger for dinner. Still full from that. I love popcorn, I wonder if that kind is better than the pop at home kind..?

Reply

i can’t believe boston is in less than 100 days! so excited for you.

Reply

I am racing in 3 weeks…just a little 4.4 miler for a good cause with some friends! Nothing major!!
I am seriously looking forward to my first spin class ever tonight!! Stoked!!
Made veggie “pizza” last night on whole wheat tortillas….pretty yummy!

Reply

I cannot wait until Boston! I am already planning what good Boston foods to eat while I’m there because I don’t want to miss out on the good stuff!

Reply

Share with me what you are planning to eat because I want all of the good stuff too!

Reply

I’ve only been there once, but I’m strangely obsessed with the corn cakes at the Parish Cafe on Boylston, Modern Pastry cannolis with vanilla custard and chocolate chips, a lobster roll (not sure where the best one is; I loved every one I had), and, because my mom is watching my kids this year, I MUST make it to one of the Little Italy spots. A friend told me that if I can find a spot where guys are arguing out front, it’s a good place. I’m not the best reference, though, because of my limited time there.

Reply

My next race isn’t until May. That seems so far away. Hopefully I can throw in a 10K or something between now and then.

My training last week was pretty great. I got to spend a lot of time outside and finished out the week with a progressive 10 miles run yesterday. It feels good to be back in triathlon training mode!

This week I am looking forward to seeing one of my best friends who will be visiting for a couple nights with her daughter and husband.

Reply

I have six days until my next race! Last week I was getting knee pain and plantar fasciitis pain so I only ran 7.5 miles. This week isn’t looking good either since I woke up sick. Ugh! Fingers crossed I am fine by next Sunday!

Reply

Apparently this donut shop that is 5 minutes away from my house is hosting a 5k run at the end of the month…so that may have to be my next race. Because FREE DONUTS!

Reply

I think you must do that 5k… I might have to come do it too:)

Reply

I just stopped for a Krispy Kreme today after my run and thought of you LOL. Anyways I’m glad Brooke is supporting your training ;)

My next goal race is around 50…I should know when Phoenix is right LOL?

Reply

What do you do in-between marathons? Do you start your training plan over or do you just run randomly until the next marathon? I am planning to do two marathons this year and I don’t know exactly how to train for the second one.

Reply

Hey Brooke! Yay for two marathons this year. In between marathons I do a lot of recovery, easy running and trying out different fitness classes:) When marathon training starts again, I start to follow a plan again! Good luck!

Reply

I am looking forward to a hopeful snow day this Wednesday! Lppls like the weather is cooperating with my runs and only snowing/raining on my non-run days:)

Reply

I am tossing around the idea of running a couple of half marathons in March, but haven’t committed yet. After running my first full marathon in December, I am just really enjoying NOT training and running for fun whatever mileage I feel like that day.

Reply

Oh boy, only 47 more days until the Phoenix Marathon. That’s kind of freaky! Nice week! I wish I had access to a treadmill. Sometimes, running outside in the dark and cold gets overwhelming!

Reply

How many days until your next race? 54 days until my 10-miler, and 97 days until my half marathon (it’s the day before Boston!)

How did your training go last week? Favorite run from last week? GREAT! Even though it’s been wicked cold here, I’ve run outside every day and I love it. Hate the cold slushy ground but I love running in the cold. All of my runs from last week felt great, especially my 7 mile long run yesterday.

What are you most looking forward to this week? Dinner and talking about our upcoming vacation with my family on Friday.

What was your dinner last night? baked chicken, rice & beans and zucchini

Reply

Your mom’s BBQ chicken look so delicious! Last night we had eggs, sausage, sweet potatoes, and spinach.
I’m not sure when my spring race is/where it will be, so I’m just building up my base. 31 miles last week and hopefully working up to 40 or higher over the next two months. I’m really getting an itch to try to qualify for Boston in 2015.

Reply

My next race is in 6 days…..My first marathon!!! I’m excited and freaking out all at the same time!

Last week was Taper week #1 so I enjoyed the shorter distance runs :) My “long run” of 6.2 miles was fabulous yesterday…gorgeous weather and Serial :)

Dinner last night was meatloaf with roasted broccoli :)

Reply

49 days until my 15th marathon. The Napa marathon is one of favorites so this will be my 5th appearance barring IVF goes ok and I’m only pregnant with 1 baby! It will def be a slow race since the last day to work out is 1/24. Hoping to get a 20mi in this next weekend.

Love Boston! 98 more days to cheer you and friends on from the sidelines.

Reply

Whole Foods sushi for dinner last night. It’s so expensive, but so addicting. My hubby and I get it once a week. Happy Monday!

Reply

Last night’s dinner was SO simple and SO good! “Pepperoncini Pot Roast”! You can find the recipe on my blog but basically it’s a roast and a jar of pepperoncini’s dumped into a crock pot. We have had this meal with potatoes and veggies on the side before but last night we shredded the roast and made sub sandwiches with cheese. OH SO GOOD! :)

Reply

Next race is a trail 50k on Feb 22nd….I’m really excited!

I was mostly tapering / resting last week. I had my first 50k on Saturday and man…those five miles beyond a marathon are no joke!

I’m looking forward to recovering!

Sweet potato enchiladas.

Reply

I have a few spring half marathons…so training starts Feb 7th officially. Looks like you had a great training week!

Reply

I just want you to know I look forward to reading your blog every single day…. and sometimes it makes me want to move back to Utah. :) Lots of love!

Reply

EMO!?!?!? IS IT YOU!?!?! TWIN???? This made my day. I feel like the next time you are here WE HAVE TO GET TOGETHER! LOVE YOU!

Reply

Those Rice Krispies treats look INCREDIBLE!

Reply

I love BBQ chicken like that. I was craving some while I was visiting VA, but when I ordered it it was awful and made me sad inside. Now I have to find some more somewhere!

My next race isn’t until May, but it might help if I actually register for it.

Reply

What’s the hardest part about running for you? I want to know!

Your job seems to permit a lot of flexibility around your life and I love that.

Reply

My favorite run last week was the track workout – first of the season. Coach has us doing 12 x 400m at 10k pace (which turned into 5k pace) and IT. WAS. AWESOME.

My long run yesterday was also my only run last week not on a treadmill…but we had windchills of -40F, so I was ok with being on the TM!!

Dinner last night was homemade tomato meat sauce on spaghetti and salad – YUM!

Reply

Way to go on the mileage!! Last night I had rice, roast, and corn for dinner and it was delicious :) I am dreading being cold this week ha, me and cold don’t mix!

Reply

5 days until Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend! I’m really excited!
89 days until Paris Marathon! Gulp..
And 138 until my 200 mile gravel bike race. Double Gulp..

Reply

I had to laugh when I saw your bag of popcorn, That is my latest obsession too! Except mine is Boom Chicka Pop lightly salted popcorn. I have to have some every night before bed (for a couple months now, lol). I might have to try that one next… Good job on your training!

Reply

Thanks for reminding me. I’m only 26 days away!!! Ultra Relay in Arizona. Then my first marathon in May. I don’t think I’ll ever get up to 50 miles a week, but I’m just trying to finish without getting hurt. Yesterdays run in Park City was AMAZING!!! My friend took me around the trail system and we went from Deer Valley all around the city and then to the middle of nowhere. All paved trails. A little snow, but not much.
You should try it!

Reply

Mmmm the bbq chicken baked potato looks amazing!! We’re running today and I’m so looking forward to it! :)

xo

Reply

Brooke is such a sweet girl!!! I really want to try that Skinny Popcorn… they have it at Sam’s club in our area and I have been craving popcorn like crazy.

Nice runs and mileage for training week 2! My next “race” is in 4 months and it will be the delivery of Baby #2! Training for childbirth is a lot like training for a race, except I keep getting bigger and slower rather than faster and lighter :)

I’m most looking forward to going to Zumba with my mom tonight (it’s been a long time!) AND going to my first Cyclefit spin class on Thursday!

Reply

That’s quite possibly the biggest bag of popcorn I’ve ever seen. I would probably go through it pretty quick too.

Last night I had my mom’s amazing meat sauce and spaghetti.

Reply

I had the “chicken pot pie soup” from the SkinnyTaste cookbook. That cookbook is just as awesome as the blog. I’m making baked fried chicken this week from the book, too!

Reply

Reading your post and all of the comments just amaze me. I’m just hoping to find a 5K to stagger through in a couple of months! Ha! Is there such a thing as beginner’s envy? I think I have it! Good luck to all the proper runners out there! :)

Reply

That is one of my favorite brands of popcorn! Have you tried their white cheddar flavor? It is even better!

Reply

Mmm, that dinner and dessert looks amazing!

Reply

I am training for Boston too – LOVE all your content on it.

Reply

Awesome week of training lady! Those are some speedy 800s. Keep it up! Can’t wait to see you rock Boston! xo

Reply

I’m 6 weeks into training for my first marathon…and starting to get some doubts in my head- already. Yikes.

Reply

That is by far my FAVORITE popcorn. We also always buy it in the jumbo bags from Costco. For a while, they didn’t carry the popcorn and it was the biggest disappointment! Even when I was there 2 weeks ago it wasn’t back in stock so I’m hoping since you’re finding it at Costco in Utah it will also be available at the Texas Costco!

Reply

My next race is… BOSTON!
Knee is healing (stress fracture) and I hope to be running again by next week.
I have been in the pool running and on the bike for the last 6 weeks. :(
But fingers crossed that all is well with the knee.

Love reading about your training! You are rocking it :)

I had chicken noodle soup, salad, sourdough bread and a banana for dinner.

What am I looking forward to this week? My MRI!

Have a great day!

Reply

I haven’t signed up for any races yet this year, but I’m thinking about doing one in mid March, which means about 2 months!

I enjoyed last week’s training! Because I was still on holidays, I could sleep in a bit, take my time at the gym, and do and give that bit extra, without having to race to work. My favourite run was a 15km on Tuesday – it just felt good.

This week I’m looking forward to see my parents on the weekend for my Dad’s birthday!

Last night for dinner I had a baked salmon fillet with pan-tossed brussel sprouts, bok choy, onion and garlic. Simple but yum!

Reply

I haven’t counted the days until my next race…it’s at the end of March.

My favorite run last week was my run with my running group on Saturday – it’s always the run highlight (runlight?) of my week!

I’m looking forward to starting my new training plan this week!

Dinner last night was BLTs with chips and guacamole…and guacamole on the BLT :)

Reply

My next race is February 28th–the Phoenix Half Marathon! I’m currently in Week 4 of training and really trying to challenge myself to get faster! I would LOVE to PR!!!

Supper was a bit of a snack tray since I was watching football with friends!

I am really excited for Bachelor night with the girls!

Reply

Thanks so much for this post. I somehow managed to run a BQ in my first marathon and am super anxious (but excited!) about April 20. I will definitely be using your tips and looking at the sites you have linked to in your posts. I think I may start overanalyzing very quickly, though-ha! Good luck with your training!

Reply

This post makes me very happy for 3 reasons
1) I have the same shirt as you in the first pic
2.) i LOVE that popcorn
3.) I found out today that I am running the Boston Marathon!!! I can’t wait to train and read your posts for inspiration along the way.

Reply

Did you know that you can buy the Disneyland cookbook? My mom has it…not sure if it’s still around or not, but you would love it! :)
I am racing the US Half Champs this weekend! So excited :)
Dinners always include a good kale salad and some high quality carbs–that’s my fav.

Reply

Plenty of races coming up for me this year but my next one is March 13… Run to the Pub 1/2 marathon. I am most excited for my first marathon in September.

Tonight I splurged and had a Quesadilla Burger at Applebee’s which was really good.

I love that Brooke opens her mouth when she feeds you! So cute!

Reply

I’m 12 days from my next race. Luckily we have slightly warmer coming so I can get outside for a couple runs!

Reply

I cannot WAIT until Boston, I’m over the moon excited about it!!! 97 days, eek!

My next race is in 2 weeks, well not quite 2 now. Rock-n-Roll NOLA Half Marathon. This past weekend I participated in the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon where I picked up a PR! :) Looking forward to some spin classes this week give my legs a break.
