Why I Think Runners Should Spin and some Thursday Things.

Last night was a good one.

Mer (my grandma) needed help getting her tree put up and because Brooke and I have become quite the tree experts, we were there in an instant.

Mer let Brooke choose out any ornament that she wanted to take home for our tree.  PS Mer has had some of her ornaments for 80 years!

Mr. Blue is photobombing like usual.

This morning was a sweaty one.  Thank goodness because my body craves that kind of stuff.  I taught a spin class and two things about this picture.

1.  That is Jess’s knee!  She had knee surgery 6 weeks ago and is rehabbing like a champ.  She came to class today and rocked it (while also listening to her body and being smart about it all too:)

2.  These spin shoes of mine have taught hundreds of spin classes (I bought them 8 years ago) and they still work like a dream.  If only running shoes could last that long… We would all have a lot more money in our bank accounts.

I adore spin.  I know it is good for my running and I love how intense it is.

Why I think runners should at least try out some spin classes:

1.  Talk about teaching your legs how to have a quick leg turnover!  My PR in the marathon happened during a time that I was teaching 3-4 spin classes a week and running 3 days.  I think it really helps me to learn how to have a fast cadence and train my legs to move quick.

2.  LESS IMPACT on your joints/body/bones while still getting your heart rate WAY up there and building strength in those legs.

3.  You can simulate running workouts while on the bike.  Tempo rides, mile repeats, sprints, long steady climbs—>  you name it, the bike can help you with your endurance.

4.  The spin bike is awesome when you are taking a few days off from running because you have a niggle and do not want it to turn into an full-blown injury.  PS I own THIS ONE and it is a great one to have at home!

5.  In the winter when it is freezing outside, I think that a hot/sweaty spin class is good for your soul and internal body temperature;)

I will say, that no matter how good of running shape I think I am in, a spin class still kicks my trash in the best way possible.

Brooke chose to wear her #snowday shirt.

She is very intuitive because it is snowing like crazy this afternoon.

I would show you a picture but instead, imagine a square picture that is all white because it is pretty much a blizzard outside.

One of the things that will save me this winter is my beloved Minestrone.  I make it super hot in hopes of it keeping me warm for the rest of the day.

Yeah… about that:

I had this nice comment all typed up and then I think it got deleted! Oh well!

The gist:
I love spinning.
It’s not snowing here but my kids wish it would.

I think all runners should do some cross training. It keeps our bodies constantly guessing what’s next. I don’t know, I do believe everyone could benefit from cross training.

It’s funny you mention soup. It’s fridgid here and I’m craving soup right now. It’s that blustery rain and 25 degrees. I prefer snow at this point.

Lol – I just wrote on my blog about that same thing! Seriously, at least make your numbers believable. So dumb. I don’t understand why people cheat in the first place.

Three things today – work, bake (still to come), and clean my house. Not the most exciting day ever.

I really need to spin. I am so bad about going to classes and I know I need to!

Reply

I’ve just recently started spinning and it’s such a touh workout!
1. 6 miles and breakfast with friends
2. I bought Christmas wrapping paper
3. I did down PiYO DVDs.

Reply

My husband bought a spin bike last year after he hurt his back, but I am scared to try it! Maybe that will be my 2015 goal.

Three things I did today: Ran 8 miles, wrapped Christmas presents, called my Dad (he lives I TX, I live in VA).

I am channeling my inner Janae and making turkey burgers (Trader Joes), baked sweet potatoes, and salad for dinner!

Reply

I have always wanted to try spin! I need to go to one of your classes :) You should have a class just for all of your blog readers! That would be so fun.

1. Went to the bank
2. Bought some new winter PJs for my baby boy
3. Watched the SNOW fall!!

Reply

I second the class for blog readers!

Reply

I am a spin lover, but mostly in the winter months and especially after a big race when I need a change of pace. 3 things for today were took my kids to gymnastics and dance, ran 6 miles on my favorite hilly route and now making sweet potato fries.

Reply

You are making me want to put my Christmas tree up! 3 things today: Stair climber & strength training leg workout (killer), worked ALL day and had acupuncture.

Reply

1- finished an essay that was taking me forever, so happy to be finally done with that!
2- baked cupcakes for this weekend!
3- went for a 20 minute walk since I’m not allowed to run due to a back injury!!:(

Brooke is just so cute!! I really hope we don’t get snow in the UK this year, after living in Chicago for 6 years, I’m officially done with snow for while;) Plus England goes crazy when it snows, no one knows how to handle it!

Reply

Today I: ran 7 miles, watched way too many home renovation shows and drank a ton of coffee :)

Hooray for spin as cross-training! I have taught and taken it for several years; I can’t imagine life, a.k.a. running, without it!

Booooooooooooooo to cheaters! Daaaaaang.

Three things!
1.) Ran
2.) Taught children to run (yaaaaaaaay, P.E.!)
3.) Tried Stoneyfield FF vanilla yogurt for the first time ever. It’s tasty with apple slices.

Reply

Never taken a spin class, but I did ride my mountain bike today! The trail was great improved after a little bit of rain last week. My long run is 20 miles this weekend, so I’m veggie until then.

Reply

I completely agree!! When I was injured all I did was spin and one of my first runs back was a 5 mile race where I PR’d!

Reply

Erm…Stonyfield…minus the ‘e’. *le eyeroll @ Thursday brain and fingers*

Reply

I took spin classes when we lived in Germany and loved them. I just saw they are offering some here but I would have to drive 30 minutes and pay $5 per class…was trying to justify it but I think you just did it for me! Looking forward to taking one soon!

Three things….statistics class (yuck), annual physical (still healthily, woo hoo!), and parent teacher conference (my child is pretty awesome!).

Reply

I ran 3 miles :)
Drove down the jersey shore to my rental house where I’m relaxing this weekend :)
Pulled a tick off my dog :(

Reply

1. Worked really hard.
2. Eaten some DELICIOUS broccoli cheese soup.
3. Gotten my oil changed! #productive

To this day, spin is the HARDEST workout I’ve ever EVER had. Period. My legs are so weak and it was SO hard. I’ve only done it a handful of times, and I have mad respect for regular spinners and bikers!

Reply

Work
Pilates at lunch time
Physical therapy

I’m doing good after an it band injury, back running 8 miles and hope to do 10 at the weekend and half marathon in 3 weeks well fingers crossed .

Janae your such an inspiration, reading your blog especially during my injury over the past few weeks has given me the motivation to stick with running, thank you so much.

Reply

It started snowing here today, too! BAH. Nooooot ready for this!

Reply

Had a freezing cold mile walk to work this morning.
Had delicious Pad Thai for lunch (ate WAY too much)

Going to run with a couple friends after work (10 miles on the agenda)

Reply

I actually just wrote a post about cheating in marathons and mentioned that, that story is totally cray (If you’re interested: http://cadsandscallywags.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/why-do-runners-cheat.html) !

Today I have done kettlebells in my lunch- near killed me; I have been to my night course in counselling; and I have arranged my Sat Long Run!

Reply

I haven’t been to spinning in a long time. I hope to get back into it once my marathon is over and during the cold winter months! I think I would rather take a spin class than run on a treadmill.

Reply

Three things – annoying spreadsheet project, leftover chicken and dumplings for lunch, watch yesterday’s Modern Family tonight in pajamas. Can’t wait.

Reply

Sipped tea, at my desk, while trying to stay warm (it’s also snowing here)

Wrote tomorrow’s blog post

Ate PIZZA for lunch! :)

Reply

I have a spin audition tonight to teach at a rec centre that is opening in January! Eeek! Wish me luck!

Reply

Run, work, eat :-) it’s been a great day!

Reply

Hi there! Oh yes, cross-training in spin should be very helpful for runners! Three things I’ve done today: wrote a blog post, wrote a routine for a bootcamp I’m teaching and eaten three meals already. Fun fun!

Reply

Brooke’s little houndstooth sweater is adorable!

Reply

I miss spinning class, I went for a run on my lunch, and now I need to go pick my husband up because his truck died. I really hope we don’t need any major parts/a new one!

Reply

1. Blown my nose about a billion times (using toilet paper because we ran out of tissue yesterday and I haven’t gone out yet to get more).
2. Played with my baby boy.
3. Cuddled with my kitten, who is thrilled it’s finally cool enough to snuggle!

Reply

I’ve never been to a spin class but I want to go so bad! It sounds like such a great workout instead of running which is mainly what I do all the time :)
Brooke is getting SO cute!! That pic of her in the snow day shirt… omg. Adorable!

Reply

I agree with you about spin! Three things I did today – run, food shopping and hang with my son while he was home sick from school.

Reply

I agree on the spin complimenting running as well. My marathon PR was my first marathon and I was spinning regularly 1 day per week. Not a ton, but I’m confident it gave me a little edge. PLUS I’m getting that exact same spin bike for home later this month for my birthday! haha. Three things I did today – worked, bought my son a new winter coat because some jerk is bullying him about having a purple coat at school and decided what my insurance benefits will look like next year.

Reply

1) ran 7 miles
2) went to a funeral
3) finished a presentation

I’ve never tried spin. But now I’m thinking seriously thinking about it. Might need to find a gym that would let me try it before becoming a member.

Reply

Seriously, who would try and cheat running a marathon. What is the point??

Today I…
Tried to go on a trail run in 6+ inches of snow and failed.
Ran 13 miles on the treadmill instead.
Spent an hour shoveling the driveway and insisted on a hot bubble bath to reward myself. There was hot chocolate involved too.

Reply

I’m trying spin for the first time tomorrow! I never though about trying it during marathon training. Never thought it would benefit my running.
Do you have to have spin shoes? Never done it before so I don’t want to show up looking like a noob!

Reply

1. Run
2. Coffee
3. Run again
Oh and Pilates for x-training between 2 & 3 -Good day ;)

Reply

I haven’t been to a spin class in years, but I do remember that the last one that I went to I left (ahem) crying. What can I say? Those classes are hard!

1. we made baking soda Christmas ornaments! I found the recipe on pinterest. So easy, highly recommend as a craft with a little one.
2. called my Mom for a long-distance (am I old for saying that?) chat
3. finally cleaned the fridge. yes, it is an exciting life I lead.

Have a great day, Janae and HRG readers! :)

2. Work
3. Pre-race massage and chiropractic adjustment…LOVE

Reply

My kids would LOVE it if it snowed here. Not sure how they’d handle snow for extended periods though! Lol

Today I sat in horrible rush hour traffic while getting my kids to school, had an amazing amazing amazing workout, and had a piano lesson. It’s been a good day…even the traffic part was fun because we car-danced to the radio :)

Last winter a great spin instructor at my local YMCA put together an 8 week spin class for our running club. It was called Bike to Run. I’d never taken a “regular” spin class so I’m not sure how different it was, but it was amazing. She talked a lot about cadence and how our turnover rate translated into running speed. We also did a lot of visualizing ourselves running as we were spinning.
Today I worked. Read all my favorite running blogs. Googled Graston Technique because my PT is doing it tomorrow on my hamstrings, huge mistake, now I’m super scared.

Reply

Lets see what I did…

1. Worked all day – LAME! BUT I did see that awesome storm that came through.
2. Am now going to eat dinner
3. Going to a scout Round table – 1st one eva! :)

I should go to cycling more often! Can I go to one of your classes? :)

Reply

1 – Drank too much coffee
2 – Wrote my grandpa a handwritten note
3 – Daydream about the season finale of Scandal

Reply

I have been reading your blog for a while and I love it! You are a great mom and Brooke is adorable!! So I have been spinning for about 2 years but have never bought spin shoes and I think it’s time…which ones do you recommend?

Reply

Thank you so much Whitney! YES YES YES get some spin shoes. I highly recommend Specialized brand! Go try on a bunch and see what feels best. Good luck!

Reply

I’m new to the blog and absolutely loving it! Spinning shoes are wonderful and completely change my class experience for the better.

1. Finished working a 12-hour night shift at the hospital.
2. Packed my bag for tomorrow’s yoga/spin class.
3. Called my Grandma just to say hello!

Reply

Thank you so so much Ktie! WOW… 12 hour shift!?! You are amazing. Have an awesome yoga and spin class tomorrow!

Reply

I miss spinning! It’s been ages since I took a class. It’s such a good workout for cross training!

1. Ran 5 miles at 5am this morning.
2. Worked all day. Boring!
3. Stuffed myself full of pizza.

We’re supposed to get some snow tonight and tomorrow!

Reply

three things I did today….
1. I didn’t win the power ball last night so I went to work ;)
2. cooked jambalaya for dinner (for the fam…I’m doing paleo right now)
3. watched Red Band Society

Reply

Three things:
sleep, laundry, and sleep. I am sick so not much more was possible today.

Reply

1- Cold, cold run
2- Hot, hot shower
3- Made a delicious egg sandwich for dinner

Reply

I completely agree with you about spin classes. I love them but for the instructors in my gym class aren’t that great. The music isn’t fun and they never have a good turnout. I miss my old gym in another city I lived. Best spin classes I have ever taken!

Reply

Agree about spin. It’s challening, that’s how I know I need it.

Three things:
1 – Had a really interesting conversation about Weekend at Bernies and Caddyshack, which led to a discussion about what time was the best time for films. (Which is completely subjective, and that makes for a lively and fun debate!)
2 – Coordinated outfits for a family photo for the first time. Orange and blue is the color scheme, just because that’s what we had, but I may change my mind at the last minute because I am SO not an Auburn fan.
3 – Ran twice today because I’m off Saturday and Sunday due to traveling. Felt like a gladiator, but ready for the break.

Reply

I run and am a spin instructor and I swear it’s made me a faster runner. It’s less impact but the moves almost mirror each other. And yeah about that WORLD record…it makes me sad that people think cheating is the way to get ahead.

Reply

Man, I am sloooow before coffee. I kept staring at that marathon headline, about breaking a world record, thinking, just under 3 hours is NOT a world record. Then, five minutes later and a few sips of coffee, I realized that referred to the 55 minutes. DUH, Lynn.

Reply

I am NOT jealous of your snow….i am crossing fingers and toes that we can avoid here for a littttle while longer…booooo……

I love minestrone soup, I love spinning, and maybe i’ll get back at it this winter because i love having my trash kicked :)

Reply

1). Read your blog
2). Got stuck in the Buzzfeed black hole…

that’s as far as I’ve gotten…

Reply

Today I bought my daughter an outfit at Target, took her to the doctor, and cleaned my sinks :) Super exciting I know ;) That marathon story is crazy!!

Reply

I have to ask – how do you cheat in a marathon? Do you just pop in at some point in the middle of the race unnoticed??

Reply

I want to start spinning, but I’m always confused about what to wear. Are running shoes and capris OK? Do I have to get those padded shorts?

1) Read your blog
2) Near freezing 6 mile run
3) Hot hot soup from a can :)

Reply

I have come to LOVE spin as well! Especially what it does for my running. At my gym we have a girl who teaches Hip Hop Cycle. She incorporates hip hop dancing into a spin routine. It is so much fun that you don’t realize that you are working out your entire body! Will go back to attending that three times a week once the ankle heals!

1. “work”
2. An hour on the stationary (while watching ANTM)
3. Prepped dinner for tomorrow!

Reply

i’ve only taken one spin class before, but i’m dying to try it again! i wish you could just teach a giant spin class for all of your readers :)

Reply

Some warm soup on a snowy day sounds PERFECT!

Reply

My turnover is soooooooo slow! I’m hoping adding in spin and yoga this winter will help me be a better runner!

Reply

I love spin but I haven’t taken a class in about a year. I hope to get back to it soon!
I heard about the lady cheating in the marathon. Who does such a thing?! It just does not make sense to me! People are nuts to think they can get away with such craziness!

Reply

Where did you get Brooke’s shirt?
I’m hoping it is not from a boutique in Utah, and also that it comes in my size.
