The first cold weather run of the season.

The cold.  It has come.

I almost backed out of my run with friends this morning when my thermometer read 37 degrees.  IMG 0284

Last winter we would run in temps below 10 degrees but it takes a good amount of time for my wussy weather self to build up to such craziness again.  I am still shocked that I got out of my warm bed.

Luckily, once we got going I quickly remembered that my body preforms best at about 40 degrees (with the right tights/top/gloves).  We had such a good conversation this morning with the girls that when we finished and I asked them how far we had gone (haven’t worn my garmin in weeks) I was surprised that we did 9.5 miles @ 7:58 pace.  I thought we had done 6-7 miles because the time flew by.  Maybe the run went by so fast because I am on the treadmill so much lately and it just felt good to be outside.

It was WINDY.com this morning.  And of course I complained about the wind at the beginning but from now on let’s all be the girl in the yellow when dealing with the wind while we run;)

IMG 0285

It is almost too good to be true when she wants to share a big ol’ plate of roasted broccoli with me.

IMG 0306

And this is what happens when I don’t pay attention for 40 seconds.  A salt, pepper and saltine sandwich sounds pretty good to me too.

IMG 0315

Brooke’s room is finally all finished (I am sorry for showing you one of the walls in a previous post but I just like it so here it is again).  Question—>  At what age do kiddos move to a big kid bed?!?

IMG 0290

IMG 0296

It only took me three months to finish it all… decisions are very hard for me.

IMG 0299

I saw this today and I couldn’t help but share it because those arms are just too much.

Best part of my day is that today is my Friday! Using tomorrow to get ready to leave for NYC…bad part, not sure I’ll be able to run the marathon because my foot is still not working properly.

I love 30-40 degree weather, but it takes awhile to get used to it again! Going out in under 60 degree weather felt cold for awhile! And yes, I too complain about the wind. I am trying to be more like the girl in yellow though!

I moved my kids out of a crib around two. But it really doesn’t matter. Whatever works for you is what is best.

I have a hard time getting out the door in the cold too – but like you I run so well in the cold that once I get going I have a hard time remembering what my complaint was.

Brooke’s room is adorable!!
Best part of the day: Running the 11.2 super hilly route through Percy Warner Park with friends!!
Best Part Later On: Cooking dinner for my husband:)

Reply

If you absolutely hate the outdoore, why not run on the treadmill? I personally like running outside because there are beautiful things to see and it balances out ny rising temperature, but you don’t have to run outside with friends if you dread it.

Reply

Her room is adorable!
And you’re so brave. I’m such a wuss. I don’t run in the cold.

Reply

I take it Brooke has not climbed out of her crib yet, so in my opinion – keep her in there!! No rush- she could be in there another year if you want. I had to move my first daughter out of her crib the week she turned two because she started climbing out and it just wasn’t safe anymore.

Her room is adorable!!
In the pic with the unit with the baskets (where Brooke is sitting on the floor reading), is that unit from Ikea? I am trying to decide on storage systems for a playroom for my two girls and I am not sure what to buy yet.

Reply

Brooke hasn’t even attempted climbing out of her crib yet! I think I will be like you and keep her in there until she starts trying to climb out like your first daughter. YES!! The unit is from Ikea and the baskets are from Target. It is my favorite part of our whole apartment!

Thank you!!

Yikes, your cold temps makes me happy I’m living in North Carolina :) Brooke’s room looks great!

Brooke’s room is so cute! I love that it’s playful but still decorated nicely :) And I’m making chicken fried rice for dinner tonight. It’s a healthified version and I’m excited to try it out!

Reply

I would leave her in there until she starts climbing out. Also, I’ll just mention if you are considering potty training soon – only change one thing at a time. So if she’s still doing great in the crib, potty train first then transition her bed 6 months later. My experience with toddlers has been they do better with small changes. But I only have boys so it might be totally different with girls!

Upper 30s low 40s is where I perform my best too, but agree it takes a little while to get used to just stepping out in the cold. Love her room!

Reply

We put Max in his “big boy bed” when he turned two. He was able to get out of his crib – and once we heard a big ‘thud’ one day – we converted his crib into his toddler bed. He prefers queen sized beds with lots of pillows though….(no joke).

I do not like cold running – if it is over 0C, it doesn’t really bother me – it is when it goes under that. BUT – for me it is the ice on the road/sidewalks that I really don’t like.

Biker baby seriously made me chuckle!!!
My twins moved into toddler beds right at two. My boy was climbing out of his crib the second we’d put him in…and get right into his sisters crib! I have lots of good tips for the transition into a toddler bed if you ever need them! My first advise, though, is to wait as long as possible ;)

Brooke’s room is coming together nicely. I totally know what you mean about decorating and procrastination. My husband and I moved into our house almost two years ago and I am still trying to figure out how to decorate. Does this mean I am lazy? I hope not because I DO put effort into a lot of other things. :)

Best part of my day so far was going on an easy run and then meeting up with a friend for lunch. Looking forward to the World Series!

Oh man, we’ve already hit 32F when I wake up in the morning. SO not ready for long sleeve runs! I wish it could be fall runs year round!

I have some vegan eggplant quinoa chili simmering right now so I can’t wait for that to be ready!

Reply

Hi Janae- Love Brooke’s room! I don’t have any kids of my own yet, but I nanny for a bunch of little ones- most seem to transfer to a “big bed” around 2- 2.5 yrs. But really it’s whenever you think she needs to (climbing out of crib etc)

Reply

That is way too cold!!! The only good thing about today was being wide awake and ready to workout at 5 this morning. The rest of my day went downhill from there.

Reply

What an adorable room! It came out GREAT Janae! Can I hire you to come decorate my house? I will pay you in Salted Caramel Gu!

I am so jealous of your awesome running weather! I was sweating it out yesterday in 85 degrees!

Reply

I’ve been running without a garmin most of the time lately too, it’s so nice! I generally have a good estimate of how far I’ve run because I stick to routes I know the distance of or have mapped in advance, so I log my mileage in a spreadsheet, but I don’t even bother recording the time. I’m sure it’s not doing my speed any favors, but it has really helped make my running more enjoyable!

Reply

Every kid was different regarding going from crib to bed. Keep her in there for as long as possible = you don’t worry if she’s escaping and doing something dangerous while you’re sleeping.

Best part of today has been having my 3-year-old consistently tell me that we are best friends. Love it.

Reply

My boys turned 2.5 at the end of September and they’re still in their cribs. They don’t try to climb out so we just leave them. Plus I’m worried about when they’re free to roam about. I have a feeling we’re going to have to take everything out of their room and off the walls when they go to big boy beds.

The best part of my Wednesday will be watching game 7 of the world series. We just moved from Kansas city in April. Wish we were still there to celebrate the royals!

Reply

LOVE your new place & the way you decorated it. I’ll need you to roadtrip to Maryland and do mine too :)

Best part of my day was my 7 miler earlier. I’ve been dealing with a really stressful situation and didnt even want to run today but ended up getting a new 5k pr and then really enjoyed my 4 mile “cooldown” ha. Definitely one of those days that makes me remember why I run in the first place.

Reply

Ohhh and about the crib…the kids I’ve nannied transitioned out of the crib when they turned two but it made me soooo so sad, I was like nooo stop making the grow up! They are still babies, right?!

Reply

My friend! I miss you!! B’s room looks adorable. I bet she is loving her new digs!!

37. That’s cold. I’m going to freeze in NY this weekend. My shin splints need to go away pronto. Going to do a few easy miles tomorrow to test the water. Sunday may get ugly fast. At least I’ll have a lot to look at :)

Hugs!!

I left my kids in their crib until they tried to climb out, which was around 3 for my kids. I always tried not to mess with a good night’s sleep

Best part of my Wednesday so far is finding out that I don’t have to work as much as I thought tomorrow. Brooke’s room is adorable!

Reply

Her room is so dang cute. I put Annabelle in a big girl bed just after she turned 2 because I was 20weeks pregnant with Evan and I didn’t want her to think the baby was taking her bed. I put Evan in a big bed at like 20months because he kept climbing out and at night he would run and hide in Anna’s bed because he wanted a big bed to sleep in. But if there are no problems with her staying in, by all means, keep her in. I swear there were several weeks of no napping for my kids with the transition. It’s not like your kid will turn into a serial killer if you wait. Same goes for ____ that they should do by ___ age.

I am looking forward to watching a Halloween movie with my kids tonight after dinner. Last year we watched Hocus Pocus (per someone’s recommendation) Ya. I will pre screen movies from my childhood before showing them to my kids. I forget so much stuff and think it will be fine. Nope. It was not.

Reply

Brooke’s room is cute! What a lucky girl. I moved all my kiddos out of the crib and into a big bed when they turned three. Luckily I never had a child that tried climbing out.

Reply

Yes, I love the crisp fall weather, too. It was 34 degrees today on my run. Chilly at first but didn’t even feel it by the end. As long as the snow stays away, I will take it!!

Reply

I’m 18 months out and haven’t hung the stuff in my redecorated bedroom yet. My bad. Please don’t tell me you are anti-garmin now!!! I know it’s nice to not always have it on or just have a run where you are running by perceived effort. But I love the information my Garmin gives to me. I keep a pretty detailed journal too.

Reply

Best part of my Wednesday- I completed my last long run of this half marathon training cycle!!

Reply

That picture of the baby kills me! Too cute.
Brooke’s room is lovely – you did a great job, I’m sure she’s loving it!
I also love running in the cold but like you said, as long as I’m wearing the right running clothes. I cannot survive without my running tights – I busted them out today and god I’ve missed them!

Reply

The room looks great!! I am so impressed by your decorating skills! Best part of my Wednesday was an awesome yoga class…and the instructor gave us a piece of chocolate at the end for Halloween:)

Haha that baby is my brother’s friend from high school’s! He’s super cute, right?! I love seeing all the updates on Facebook.

The best part of my day was my run! It was a nice, strong, speedy (for me) one :)

Going to see Hunchback of Notre Dame as a musical tonight with the hubs! I definitely don’t miss those Utah winters! I’m so happy the C2H race made it on here! I knew Zack would know you somehow…I’m pretty sure he knows every pretty girl that went to BYU!

Reply

We’ve been in our new house for over 5 months and my daughters room STILL isn’t done…Her bow holder is hung up (priorities), but that’s it.

Reply

I was complaining about the wind on my run today too! Luckily, the temps this afternoon were above 50, which was a nice treat from the 35 degree run I did on Monday! It’s cold in utah again!! I’m totally with you on not being acclimated to running in the cold yet. Hang in there sister :)

Reply

The best part of my Wednesday was teaching one of my favorite trauma nursing courses today (and the fun continues tomorrow!!).
You can look into doing a toddler bed that’s close to the ground…the goal is to ensure that you minimize a risk for injury so if Brooke can climb out of her crib then it’s probably time to change.

Reply

brookes room is adorable!! the move to a bed is usually around 3 :)

Reply

Brooke’s room is adorable!!! Love the “I am a child of God” sign!

I’m not sure when we are going to move my son out of his crib. I’ve thought of just putting a toddler mattress on the floor so he won’t get hurt falling out of bed. Suppose I should find an actual toddler frame someday… We have a little time to go until he has to move out of the crib, though!

Reply

Brooke’s room is SO cute!! She has the same crib as my sister :) Best part of my day was going to Old Navy and buying way too many clothes ;)

Reply

1)the first picture and sentence made me laugh out loud! 2)Great job with the room!! I cannot believe you can have those beautiful vases on the shelf-my boys would have smashed those in seconds. 3)We moved my first son at 21 months(crawling out)and my second just a few weeks ago at 27 months. He wasn’t getting out but we are going to start potty training soon. I like to have them in a big kid bed and adjusted for when they need to get up at night so they can get out to use the potty!

Reply

I ran I’m 18 degree tempts yesterday & today! Determined to brave the cold until the ice is here! ❄️

I saw Ellen’s post too and I nearly spit out my coffee! I died!

Brooke’s hair is GORGEOUS. Those pigtails are just killer!

It’s crazy that you had such a cool run, I ran this afternoon after work and nearly had a heat stroke! Send some of those cooler temps our way please!

Reply

Oh my goodness I love Brooke’s room! Please come and decorate my daughters room! I might have to copy you and get those shelves/baskets.

We switched to a big girl bed at 18 months because she was trying to climb over. Weird fact: she is 2.5 and she still has not gotten out of bed once without my help! That probably won’t happen to you, so I say wait as long as you can!

She fell off the bed the first night, so here is a tip when you do switch. A pool noodle under the fitted sheet kept her on the bed all night.

Have a good night!

I love the way the wall above the crib turned out! The two pictures to the side of her canvas are great!

When to move to a bed and out of the crib is kind of like potty training….it’s pretty individual based on each kid. My oldest was moved to a bed right around his 2nd birthday. But it’s because he refused to get in the crib one night and never would go in there again without screaming. My younger child stayed in his crib for longer. I think he was 2 1/2 or 3? And we decided to move him just to give him more space to sleep. He seemed pretty crowded in there.

Reply

My youngest didn’t transition to a bog bed until after she was 3 and was literally too big for her crib. I don’t remember any of my kids having any issues with the change.

Brooke’s room is adorable. I think 3-months for decorating is perfectly reasonable.

I’m hoping the best part of my day will be the Giants winning the World Series tonight!

PS I would much rather run in the cold vs any other “extreme” weather.

Reply

My daughter was out by 2 since my son was born a few months later and we didn’t want to buy another crib! My son was out by 2.5 because he broke his femur and was in a spica cast (from the rib cage down to his knee on one leg and down to the ankle on the other!) and so it was too hard to lift him in and out of the crib. Favorite part of my day today was my 2 hour bike ride in the foothills. Our Colorado fall has been beautiful but it probably means one of these days we will wake up to snow.

Reply

Can you do a post on winter running!? I live in Minnesota and I would love to not be bound to the treadmill for 6 months. But I’m terrified of falling on my face or freezing my tooshy off. Haha.

Reply

It takes me time to adjust to the colder weather too but then I can sort of tolerate it…It’s supposed to be super windy this Sunday for NYCM. Not that I am running it but I am already feeling nervous and bad for everyone that is. 40 MPH is serious…Love Brooke’s room! I switched my son from a crib to toddler bed a few months after he turned two but I think all kids are different. If she isn’t climbing out, I wouldn’t switch!

Reply

Her room is so beautiful, Janae. I know you’re probably not even done yet! :) <3

Reply

woo that’s chilly! It’s still around 45 in the mornings here, but that’s cold enough to make me want to stay cuddled up!

Reply

I never put my son into a toddler bed, I figured why spend the money for such a short period of time. I moved him when he started crawling out of his crib, I want to say it was before he was 2. I put him right into a full bed.

Reply

My two older kiddos both moved into big kid beds at 2. My youngest was about 14/15 months because he wouldn’t stay in his crib after his older brother showed him the fun art if escaping.

Reply

oh my goodness – that baby picture! how funny!! My Brooke is 16 months and still in a crib and will be for a while, I imagine :) And the best part of my day should be going to the gym (it’s been a bad week for gym visits)…but will probably be falling asleep on the couch at 9. :)

Reply

Totally with you on the getting out of the warm bed part. But then I remember how much I love not smothering in humidity or wilting in the heat or just being a completely sweaty disgusting mess. I love the crisp air and seeing my breath and smelling that “snow is coming” smell.

Reply

I love cold(ish) weather runs!! The best part of my day was a student saying, “at least you care about me,” before he stormed out of my classroom. And he meant it.

Reply

Hey! Did you get those baskets from Ikea? I’ve been looking for some, but I don’t like the ones at Target, and Pottery Barn is too expensive.

Reply

I moved my kids out of their cribs once they got adventurous and started trying to climb out on their own. It ended up being around the age of 2 for both. All kids are different and you’ll know when the time is right. My biggest concern with both was that they be able to get to me during the night if they got out of bed. We don’t have stairs so that wasn’t an issue.

Reply

I moved my son (he’s 5 now) to a bed when he turned 2 because I was pregnant with my daughter and wanted there to be some time before she used that crib. My daughter is a wild child and tried climbing out of her crib at 2 so we bought her a toddler bed. That was a huge mistake for her, she hated it. You could just wait until about 3 and then make a big deal out of it being a big girl bed. I won’t lie though, cribs were a little easier because they couldn’t climb out and come into my room in the middle of the night.

Reply

You did a great job with her room! I love all the photos.

Where did you get her kitchen? I’ve been looking for one and haven’t found any that don’t look…icky. I love that one!

Reply

I know I’ll complain about this in a few weeks, but I’m loving the cold weather! I agree, mid-40s are running perfection. Low 50s isn’t too bad either :)

Love the way you decorated! Brooke must be a happy girl!

Reply

my cold weather run tolerance is so low right now!

Reply

Obviously it’s different for every kid – I had one friend who’s son was already climbing out of his crib at 1 year old so they switched to a big boy bed then. Our son never once tried getting out of his crib but we switched him at 2.5 years old.

Love the bookshelf in her bedroom – where’s it from?

Reply

Yes, first few cold runs of the year are the hardest! In a few weeks I’m sure our bodies will have adjusted. It always takes me a few weeks to remember which layers work best anyway. We’re supposed to get snow this weekend.

And Brooke’s room turned out so cute!

Reply

Brookes room is so sweet :)

a lot of toddlers like sleeping on a mattress on the floor if you want to try that before choosing a bed

I love Brooke’s room! You did a great job girl!

What kitchen set is that in Brooke’s room? I’d love to get something similar for my 2 year old.

Reply

Where did you get the “You are My Sunshine” prints? I sing that to my middle daughter all the time. I would love to have it for her room.

I love Brooke’s room. I am terrible at making decorating decisions too!!

Reply

Brooke’s room is darling! I had 3 boys and would move them to the “big” bed when they could pretty well go through the night dry, even if still in a diaper, albeit with my getting them up at 11 for a trip to the bathroom. My theory was its easier to wash crib sheets that a whole twin bed set. (Boys do tend to leak!) Also they wanted to be in the grown up bed and so were motivated! Worked for me with only occasional accidents afterwards.

Reply

You did a wonderful job on Brooke’s room. And that canvas? Oh my! GORGE.
My daughter just turned 3 and loves her crib. I keep asking her if she’s ready for a big girl bed, but she seems very content. I’m wondering if I pushed her, if we would just have problems with her coming out of her room constantly. I think if they are truly ready, that doesn’t become an issue. I don’t think there is any right answer. You and Brooke know best. Does she sleep in a bed at her dad’s place?

Reply

Brooke’s room is so cute! I especially love that little window nook, I wish I had one of those now!

The window seat in her room is so cool! I want one for my room :)

LOVE Brooke’s room! My daughter recently started climbing out of her crib (she’s 21 months), so we had to convert her to a toddler bed for safety purposes. I think most kids convert to a bed around 2-ish? But if Brooke is not climbing out and she’s not cramped in the crib, I say leave her in as long as you can, because when they get that freedom to get out of bed when they want…watch out! :)
