St. George Marathon Recap

If you think after reading this recap that I am beyond in love and borderline obsessed with the St. George Marathon—>  good job because you understood exactly what I am trying to convey in this post.

One thing that did go so very wrong—>  my wireless headphones would not turn on.  At mile 8 when I went to turn them on to help me get up the huge hill they just wouldn’t work.  I even tested them the night before and made sure they were charging all night.  As you know, I love my music.  I had the best playlist ever ready to be listened to.  I was really bummed but decided I wouldn’t let it bother me and whenever there weren’t people around me I would turn my phone music on just loud enough for me to hear the beat.  I missed music dearly but at the same time it really helped me to stay in tune with how I was feeling and focus on the running and not the music.

Rewind to the start.  We got on the busses at 5 and got to the starting line at 5:30.  They had a bunch of fires to sit around because it was really cold.  There was also a pretty strong tailwind which made me pretty happy.

IMG 8985

The race started at 7 (15 minutes late which worked out perfect because it made it so my parents got there just in time to watch me finish).

I started out with my friend Amber and then got separated from her and fell into my groove.  The first few miles were kind of dark but it was perfect running weather. I was excited when the sun came up because of the views.

IMG 8987

I hit the 10k mark at 44:15 and my legs still felt fresh.  I started to realize that it was probably going to be a good day for me.

Veyo.  This pic was taken in the middlish of the hill.  It went on for a long time and I didn’t do a lot of hill training in preparation so I definitely felt this hill.   I didn’t pay attention to my pace at all on Veyo and used the same amount of effort on the hill as I did for the first 7 miles to avoid burning out early in the race.

IMG 8990

I stayed at a pretty comfortable pace (for me) for the first half and then at 13.1 told myself it was time to get to work (which equalled only slightly faster than the first half but those paces were harder to hit with tired legs after the rollers from miles 7-11).

This is when we came down into snow canyon.  True love.

IMG 8995

After that mile I stopped taking pictures and focused on keeping a steady pace and loving the scenery.  The last two miles are in the city of St. George which I loved because I grew up there and it was so fun to run by some memorable spots (like where my mom used to take me bowling on early out days from school:).  I never hit the wall (I think I have finally figured out my nutrition) but my legs were pretty darn tired for the last 2 miles and it was also pretty hot at that time in the morning without any shade.

I finished at 3:12:40.

My splits were:  7:24, 7:19, 7:00, 6:59, 7:10, 6:58, 7:02, 8:18, 7:48, 7:52, 8:04, 7:28, 7:10, 7:17, 7:00, 6:57, 7:05, 7:16, 7:44, 7:15, 7:09, 7:16, 7:29, 7:05, 7:17, 7:25, .2 @ 6:56

IMG 9002

The best was seeing my parents at the finish line.  I thought they weren’t going to be in town until later in the day (for work) but they left extremely early that morning  to make it to the finish line in time.  The best.  I got an ‘atta girl’ from my dad which is a huge deal in my family.

IMG 9004

And Candice watched Brooke the night before the race and during the race.   I am so lucky to have her.

IMG 9008

Loved seeing all of my favorites.

IMG 9087

And of course the post-race treats were delicious!

IMG 9104

Eight things that I did differently this race that I think really helped me:

1.  I REALLY held back in the beginning.  My legs were begging me to go faster for those first few miles but I (for the first time ever) didn’t give in to my own peer pressure.  I knew I wanted to really work for negative splits (the second half faster than the first half) and the only way to feel somewhat okay at the end would be to save some of my speed.

-I had a negative split of about 2 minutes and 34 seconds.  First marathon that I have ever done with a negative split.

2.  I didn’t put any pressure on myself.  I was positive with myself the whole time (probably because I was doing better than I assumed I would so I was patting myself on the back instead of expecting more).

3.  I WALKED during every single aid station.  I was extremely worried about getting dehydrated because it was warmer outside than I am used to so I walked through all of the aid stations so I could really drink up (I did run through the last one ((maybe two, I don’t remember)) though because I knew I was close enough to the finish).  I also would dump a cup of water over my head at most of the aid stations and that felt amazing.  I always switch between water and gatorade at each aid station.

4.  I put ice cubes in my sports bra for the last few miles.  Life changing.  It felt beyond amazing.  TMI.

5.  I ate two plain bagels before the race (one 2.5 hours before the start and one 1 hour before start) and 1/2 a Honey Stinger waffle 30 minutes before the start.  I had plenty of glycogen racing through my veins (and had 3 gu’s along the course at miles 7, 15.5 and 22).

6.  I did way more squats than miles this training cycle.  Strong legs/glutes/hips pushed me through and the whole experience felt so much better than any previous marathon because of this strength training.

7.  I forced myself to bed much earlier than usual the week of the marathon so I felt really good waking up at 4 on race morning.

8.  I definitely enjoyed racing at a little bit lower elevation than what I train at.  It felt easier to breathe.

Love the medal.

IMG 9092

A few tips for this course:

1.  Wear a hat or visor AND sunglasses.  You are running into the sun for a majority of the race and unless you want a fun headache from the sun then wear these things.

2.  Don’t even look at your watch on Veyo.  It is kind of steep (in my opinion but don’t be afraid of it, just train for it).  It is long.  I turned my garmin around so that I couldn’t see it and worry about how much I was slowing down.  I did not want to waste excess energy on 1 mile of a 26.2 mile race by forcing a certain speed on that hill.  Just get to the top.  There is a downhill after (along with another up but it isn’t as bad).   I did the same thing for the hill that goes up under the overpass (mile 18/19ish)… didn’t even worry about pace, just made it to the top and cruised down.

3.  PLEASE PLEASE shoot for a negative split.  It is easy to go out fast on the first few miles (especially because they are downhill) but you will feel so much better at the end if you hold yourself back a bit.

4.  My TWO FAVORITE spots were —>  Coming down into Snow Canyon= I have never seen anything more beautiful (besides Brooke’s face) and as you are coming into St. George and the amazing crowds (around mile 23).  Crying and smiling was all I could do at those two places.  Savor every second of these spots.

5.  Do not lose your lipgloss (a brand new one I might add) along the course.  It is dry here.  My lips were burning by the end.  I should have gotten some vasoline at the aid stations (ps they also have people to put icy hot on you if you are hurting along the course).

6.  Avoid leaning back on the downhills, your quads will thank you big time at the end.  Stay perpendicular to the downhill.

7.  If you aren’t going down, you are going up.  There aren’t a ton of flat sections so train on some hills.

Sleep is my mission.
Huge congrats, Ridsx

Congrats! Hope you refueled with lots of candy!

Congrats on a fantastic race, Janae! Well done!

Sounds like a really good race for you. Are those times per mile? How do you do that so fast? 7:10 is like my usual pace PER KILOMETER! Can you do a how to get faster post? :)

Reply

I ran with music yesterday, and I will admit it was easier to plow through with it, but I felt like I was missing the energy of a race and making new friends through the race.

I am super proud of my 7yr old, he got a PR yesterday for his 5k, he finished in 28:29….a full 10 minutes ahead of me. :)

Seriously, you are a running rockstar! XOXO

That medal is beautiful! Big congrats, I’m so glad it was such a happy race for you! I’m taking a lot of your advice for how you made this such a great race and going to try my best to apply it for my next marathon in ten weeks. Happy Monday!

Janae,

It looks with the exception of the headphones everything else went so smoothly. I couldn’t be happier for you. It does look like a gorgeous course. I might have to add it to my bucket list. I have read a lot about holding back your first half. I’ve only done one marathon so my experience is extremely limited with that. Anyways nice job and enjoy the recovery.

Reply

You’re amazing! Congrats Janae!

I run alone only because I am afraid of holding others back or having others hold me back if I I’m having a speedy day (is that selfish?!). It’s also my “me” time. But everyone raves about running with friends, so mayhaps I’ll try it!

Congrats, love!!!! <3

you are so awe-inspiring! i’m so proud of your positive attitude. seriously, starting my day by reading your blog each morning makes ME want to go out and give the world the same positivity you demonstrate. thank you!!! xx

Your headphones not working sounds like it worked in your favor! And I am completely jealous of that view into snow canyon, absolutely gorgeous!!! I live in a fairly flat area of the country! You should be seriously proud of what you accomplished here. You succeeded in doing something you love in a new way that was better on you both mentally and physically and is allowing you to inspire others. Well done Janae!

Oh. My. Gosh!!!!!
Congratulations Janae! Truly I am so, so, so happy for you! Not only have you had a heck of a past few months but you are such an inspiration to so many of us, and it’s always incredible to see someone be so successful be being smart about their training and overcoming so many obstacles. – Holy run-on sentence :)

Sorry about your headphones! I don’t race with music but I can only imagine how disappointing it must be to not have the super duper killer playlist you had planned on!

My most beautiful race without a doubt was the Moab half marathon, my dream race I ran last Spring!

congrats on an awesome race!!

Oh the same headphone fiasco happened to me at the NYC marathon last year. I waited until mile 20 to turn my music on and was so upset when it didn’t work. Apparently there was a volume control on the wire of the headphones that slipped down. So since then I have taped if so that won’t happen again.

I loved running my back to back half marathons in Wyoming and Montana. Both were on ranches. Just sprawling landscapes and beautifu sunrises.

Nice tip about the ice cubes in the bra :)

Sounds like you definitely did a lot of things right for this one.

Reply

I really enjoy reading your blog for running inspiration! Congratulations on such a great marathon, both your time and how you felt

Reply

Most beautiful race for me was probably Big Sur. It’s really gorgeous there!

I like a mix. I like training by myself so I know I can push myself if I need to, but it is always nice having the company and support of a friend/family on the course!

This week I want to have a good final long run before I start my taper for NYCM!

I usually run with music, but running without it was easier than I thought it would be.

I completely agree with you about lip gloss. That is one thing I always have with me during a race. Drives me crazy when my lips get dry! Congratulations on a great race!!

Reply

So happy for you! I could not imagine running without music! You are a strong woman.

CONGRATS! Very exciting, and makes me feel much better about Chicago this weekend. I am terrified, and even though I should be one of the most confident out there as I will be near the front, I am so scared of the pain. You have reminded me that it is ALL worth it at the end, especially if you go out conservative, which I am good at thankfully. Glad negative splitting helped you, feels so good tp pass people rather than be passed! That is a cool medal too :)

Reply

Congrats Janae, sounds like a beautiful run!

Reply

So so so happy for you girl!!! I knew you would kill it! I typically run races alone since no one in my family runs but I do love that they’re always there to cheer me on! This week I’m excited for my conference meet and I want to break 20 again!

Reply

You ran a smart race and negative splits are the way to go!

Reply

Really incredible! Congrats and great tips on pacing. I still have several weeks until my marathon but I’m already thinking pacing strategy so this was really helpful.

Reply

Congratulations!!
I definitely prefer music for all my workouts. Recently I’ve had to go without for a trail run and a lifting sesh and I’ve gotta admit it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It wasn’t my favorite and I can’t imagine running a marathon without music!
Random thing you reminded me of- there’s this guy at my gym who uses a little portable speaker instead of headphones. If you’re within 4 feet of him you’re listening to his music. That’s not my favorite either.
Goals for this week: get 3-4 lifting sessions, 1 run, and 2 HIIT workouts in.

Reply

Awesome awesome awesome girl!!! So happy for you!!!

Reply

such an awesome job! i’m so glad things really clicked for you!! keep up the squats!!!

Reply

Congrats again on such an awesome race, and thank you for the great tips!
Most beautiful race: Stump Jump in Chattanooga
I like to run solo if I have a time goal, but with friends and family if it’s just for fun.
My goal is to taper wisely for Chicago.
I only race with music if it’s a small race without a lot of spectators and runners.

Reply

Congrats on running a solid race, and for not letting your own thoughts get the best of you along the way. It seems like you maintained great mental control, which is awesome!

Great Job!!!

Great race!!

Reply

Congrats on a great race!

I love starting races with friends/family, but usually split after the first mile or so to focus on my own pace. I only run with music if the race is longer than a 10k…I usually just like to listen to race and be with on thoughts while I run.

My goal this week is to take it easy and recover from my race yesterday.

Reply

Great job, Janae!

Reply

I’m so impressed with your whole race! What was your strength training plan towards the end of your training? What kind of squats and how many? I saw a couple of exercises the dr gave you that you video’d, but I think that was early on in your schedule. I’m injury-prone, too, and I’m hoping to make it this year to my marathon in Feb. You are my inspiration!

Reply

I will definitely do a post about this! Thanks Laura! Have an amazing day:)

Reply

Yay! Congrats! You did so wonderfully! I race with music but I had a malfunction before a major race just like you and was surprised just how well I did without it. I’m trying to learn to race without it now but I know I’ll use it half the time anyway.

Reply

You are a rock star!! I’m so happy for you that you had such a great race–even after not having music! That would have totally thrown me.

Congratulations!

Reply

You ROCK. Congrats on an awesome race!!!

My next race is in two weeks…it’s an 80 mile relay race and I really am not sure how to train for it, so I’m a little scared but hoping it goes well!

Reply

Congratulations, Janae! What a wonderful recap! I’m so happy that you had such a fantastic race! I will never, ever run a marathon, but your post made me want to! Sort of… ;)

And without music! No lie… I’ve gotten to the gym before and turned around and left because my iPod wouldn’t turn on or I forgot my headphones. I’m what they call a Fair-Weather Fitness Enthusiast. ;) All the things have to be perfect for me to work out… haha.

Reply

Incredible, Janae! Congratulations. Very inspiring. Your comment about doing fewer miles and more strength coincides completely with this new book I was thinking of getting. I do a ton of cross training, ran 2 days a week and managed to qualify for Boston. I think there’s something to it! Great job.

Congrats! I’m bookmarking this post – a lot of great advice/reminders and I’ll read it again before I run my third full this Saturday! Hoping I can pull from your strength ;-) Inspiring for sure –

PS – I know I’ve done well and my Dad is proud when I get an “atta girl” from him. Makes me feel like his little girl all over again – and I’m 44!

Awesome job, Janae! You are so awesome!
I’ve done two beautiful half marathons, one along the ocean in New Hampshire, and one in Lake Placid, NY. They were both beautiful in their own ways!
I always run without music, I find it too distracting. I’ve been dealing with some IT Band issues, so my goal for this week is just to be active every day but not make it worse!

Reply

So glad you loved it! I finished seconds after you! Wish I could have seen you and introduced myself. Another time. :). Well done and I second everything you loved about the race–especially snow canyon. That’s where it’s time to get the party started!

AHHHHH that would have been so fun to run together! So glad you had a great race too and loved snow canyon:)

Amazing. Well done!! You look so so happy in all your photos here :)
I’ve just entered my first ever actual running race – a 10k a week on Sunday – not quite the same as this but I’m quite excited!!

Reply

Congratulations on your awesome race! Especially on successfully pacing yourself and listening to your body.

I am so glad the stars aligned and it was a good race day. You did ah-mazing and you have me craving the marathon. Though, i was talking to my neighbor last night who ran it and his experience was much different and he never wants to run a marathon again. Lol.

The head phone thing – i would have probably cried. Way to not let it get to you. This is why i think you are such a mentally tough person. I will use music sometimes. I turned it on at mile 16 during my marathon

I have said it before, but the most beautiful place i have ran waa snow canyon. I was doing the red rock relay and the sun was coming up as i entered the park/canyon and kt was breathtaking.

You know me way too well.

CONGRATULATIONS, Janae! What an amazing race with an amazing time! I ran my second marathon yesterday with a time of 3:39:40, nowhere close to you but your blog made me so inspired to run faster!
I’m really keen to know what you do after a race, especially a marathon, to recover – how long until you go back to running/cross training etc?
Well done again!

Reply

I am working on a post about that right now! I am going to wait about 2 weeks… not because of injury but I just really want to be fully recovered. I always ask myself what’s the point of running really quickly after a marathon?!

HUGE CONGRATS TO YOU!!! That is an awesome time!

Woweeee thank you for the reply! I think I am a little too excited about it.. Can’t wait to read the post, I hope you’re enjoying a well-deserved rest today! I’m about to have banana pancakes and almond butter, I highly recommend!

Congrats!!!! It is just amazing how fast you are!!!!! Oh my goodness!

Congrats!!! Such great summary and grand accomplishment!
I ran the San Diego half marathon last year, had the perfect playlist with Christmas songs, and when I started my runkeeper, the default playlist I had selected was not the one for the marathon. I was so bummed. Additionally that playlist ran out of songs at my last mile and I had no music at the end. But you’re right – that made me enjoy every step and stride I had left, I struggled but it turned into confidence. Love this feeling!

Reply

That’s so amazing, well done!’ That course looks beyond beautiful!! I can’t wait for the day I can run a marathon! Great recap :)

Reply

You did so amazing! Congrats again. I hate running without music. Music usually pushes me. The only time I didn’t was when I was training for a triathlon. Racing rules say no music. I hated it! Your pictures were beautiful. The best race I ran was up in the mountains were I live. I ran a half marathon and the views were specracular. It even almost snowed! That would have been a first. It wasn’t until two years ago that I was able to start running with friends. Best decision I’ve ever made for training purposes.

Reply

What a beautiful experience! I’m so happy it went so well. Hill training is no fun. GREAT JOB Girl.

Sounds like you had a great race. If I were going to do a marathon I’d want it to be somewhere beautiful too. You had such amazing views!

Reply

Congrats on an amazing race! The pictures are beautiful-must have been an absolutely gorgeous route.
I don’t know how people run without music. I have to have it or I go crazy. I’m always working on not going out too fast during races-this just reinforced that I need to work on that!

Reply

I live in fear of my music not working during a race! I never run without music and I am starting to think I should do a few runs without just in case. Amazing job, congrats!

Reply

Janae, you’re amazing! Congratulations! I can’t fathom ever running that fast!

I’ve only run 1 half marathon at this point….set to run my second half in 2 weeks in Hershey, PA – sooooo looking forward to some chocolate! :) I ran my first half with my husband and will do the same with the second. He helps keep me going. I do train with music, but won’t run my race with it.

Looking to stick to my training schedule this week. Getting nervous & feeling ill-prepared for my half. :(

Reply

AMAZING JOB! Speedy.
I am going to take to heart your advice on pacing for my marathon in 3 weeks.
I am glad to read you are writing about post-marathon recovery!

Reply

Congratulations on a great race! I think your attitude going into this one was great. Not putting as much pressure on yourself seemed to help! The course looks so beautiful. Your state in general just looks amazing. One day I’m going to have to make it out to Utah!

I’ve been so excited to read your recap of course the wait was worth it! It’s funny considering I don’t “know” you, but I am so proud of how awesome you did! And more than anything happy that you had a great race. Nice work!!!! Yay!!!! You’ve worked so hard and you totally earned all the awesomeness of that race. Bravo :)

Your post made me cry!!!! You are amazing and I LOVE that your parents were there for you at the finish line!!!!!
I do not listen to music on regular running days but have to have it for my races!
Now enjoy and relax these nest few days! Congrats!!!!!

Most beautiful marathon was Two oceans 56km in Cape Town South Africa – absolutely beautiful and unforgettable! I prefer to race alone unless I am doing a race for training and then I like to run with a friend. My goals this week are to get back into running shape after a six week layoff (surgery) and I train with music but not race with it because it’s not allowed in South Africa – where I live!

Great job on the marathon!

The same thing happened with my wireless headphones on my long run on Saturday! It turns out that they were on, but stuck in some other command mode. I must have pressed two buttons at once or something silly, and my music wouldn’t play and instead it was ready for phone commands. I need to read up on what all those button combinations do so I can fix it next time instead of running with my phone in my hand playing music!

I loved this! Congrats! This was my FIL’s 17th St. George marathon, long before I was part of the fam. But, he talked me into running it with him next year and it will be my first marathon. This post made me super excited for it :)

You’re amazing & so dang speedy!! I love the STG course & well remember that hill you showed the picture of. Ouch!

I did a trail race & we climbed up the mountain for the first 2 miles. It was straight up and I thought I was going to die. I am so not a runner, so I am very impressed by you!!!

I cannot believe that you ran that whole time without music! I am such a music person to power my workouts there’s no way I would have survived without it. You are a rockstar for pushing through without it. Sounds like you had a great time and pain free to I assume?

Reply

Perfectly executed race, Janae! Amazing :D
It’s also wonderful that you really got to enjoy the course. I think I’ll have to have St. George marathon on my list for a future destination marathon :)

Reply

Sounds like an awesome marathon – great job keeping your splits so consistent! One thing I am working on a lot lately is one of the tips you mentioned here – don’t lean back while running down hill. I know our tendency is to “brake” on downhills, leaning back, etc. and this is so rough on our quads. Since I am training for a 50k that is going to have a significant amount of downhill trail running, I’m trying hard to let go of that fear of falling on downhills and really lean into gravity instead of leaning back. It takes a surprising amount of practice!

Reply

Congrats Janae!!! I’m running Chicago this weekend off of not much training at all and my plan is to pace a friend so it’s really interesting going into a race with no pressure. I think it will make the experience a lot more fun, as long as I can survive the distance! haha

Great job! I haven’t been out west in years……..those are pretty views! I run with music bc I love the energy it gives me! I don’t run with anyone, although I sometimes run while my fiance bikes alongside me……he is not a runner but loves his cruiser bike, and I like how it speeds me up when we go together.

I have only raced one marathon, and it was very flat-on a Civil War Battlefield/Park. Very pretty, we even saw some deer. (That was last year. I decided not to run it this year bc I am planning a wedding and needed the money and time to devote to that………….but I will be doing it next year!)

The prettiest course I have ever run is right outside Nashville, TN…….my favorite half marathon course!

Goals for this week: 4 running days, have fun with visiting friends, enjoy the fall weather that finally showed up in Tennessee!

Congrats on a great race!… Such an inspiration!… Doing my first half in January (New Orleans Rock N Roll!) Anyways… this is a weird question…. Do you wear makeup during a race?… I wasn’t sure if I should try and put a little on for my half since it will be my first, I know I will want some pics before and after… I hate sounding like “one of those girls” b/c usually I wouldn’t care, but I really want this to be memorable and have some great pics to look back on… suggestions?
Thanks!

I think this is one of the most awesome-est posts ever! : ) I love that you found what worked for you! When running the long distances, it is such an amazing feeling to finish and just think “wow…I did that…and I still feel (pretty) good.” Great job all around!

You are so inspiring! Great job on the race – your splits were amazing!
The St. George course looks absolutely beautiful! I keep filling up my race bucket list with marathons out west – mountains are so pretty. Races out here in the Midwest are great for PRs with how flat they are but they just aren’t as beautiful as anything in Utah, Oregon, northern California, or Washington.

Fantastic race, just WOW! Huge congrats! The scenery looks so beautiful!

I ran a marathon called The Flying Monkey and it was so pretty in the fall! Also, yes I really depend on running with music to get me through!

Congrats!! This looks like an amazing race. Negative Splits seem like a faraway dream for me right now, but someday I’ll get them!! Enjoy your recovery week!

I am a firm believer of negative splits! It’s so hard the first time to believe it will work but it feels so much better in the final miles. I’ve done two downhill half marathons this summer and since I wasn’t working to beat any record I just ran them by effort not speed.
My running buddy has a house in St. George and she was telling me after my Ultra Ragnar if I can get into the SGM then she would run it with me. It may be my first ever marathon. eek.
Love Music. But I’ve ran without it.
Congrats!!! That is a smokin time and you even look great after. Lucky to have family there! I keep telling my friends I’m going to have to rent me some folks! hahaha (my parents are older and I hate to even ask)

High five! Congratulations on the strong run! Great advice and words you have passed on. Thank you for this post!

Prince George BC 18 km Otway Trail Race through fall leaves, foothill views, and amazing trail conditions. My first race in over a year and zero training: I ran with the most elite runners in Prince George, came dead last, and loved every minute of it.

I usually race alone: most running pals are pretty far away geographically so only have managed to meet up one for a race. But we trade a lot of race stories.

My goal is to keep from freaking out that I am not getting my run/workout in while at a conference/fishing trip for 5 days.

Trail races I don’t usually have tunes – don’t need it with the scenery, but road races I can’t do without it. Rocks, Primal Scream gets me through any hill.

You totally inspire me Janae!!! I am so glad that your race went so well! I love running with music, and I honestly don’t know if I could run without it. I guess I would have to if my headphones didn’t work though! ;)

St. George sounds amazingggg!!!! I’m happy it was so good to you. Congrats, Janae! Your tenacity and perseverance is incredible.

Reply

Congratulations Janae! I only run that fast in my dreams!

My favorite scenic marathon would have to be the Big Sur Marathon. That year I lucked out with perfect weather, blue skies, no head wind and miles and miles of ocean.

Reply

Awesome job! i love to run by myself.. i don’t have to keep up with anyone and i can do my thing. 60 miles to end the week is my goal!

Reply

Great recap! I have a half this weekend and it’s going to be hot! I’ll be dumping water on my head for sure…what beautiful views you had. There’s nothing better than seeing family at the finish!
Congrats!

Reply

Congrats girl! You did an awesome job of keeping your head in the game and outsmarting your legs, especially when the music didn’t work out!

Reply

What a great race, congrats!

This weekend it was 99 degrees in LA and I went to do 9 miles on saturday and I forgot that the weather here is ridiculous because its been in the 70s the past few weekends so I stopped at a starbucks for a cup of ice half way through and stepped outside to pour it down the front of my sportsbra and a turned around and a giant family was staring at me. It was great but the point is, ice down the shirt is necessary sometimes.

Congrats on another marathon in the books!

AWESOME TIME!! Congratulations! You must be so excited!

The pictures look gorgeous, too- looks like an all around amazing day!

I like to race alone, since I haven’t really found someone that matches my pace exactly enough to feel confident racing with them. The exception would be the one day I accidentally raced with one of my old friends for almost all of Boston after realizing we started in the same corral.

I don’t listen to music when I race, but I love when there is music on the race course! I think I’m just too easily distracted to deal with it on my own device while I’m running. Maybe 0ne day I’ll figure it out!

Reply

You are awesome! Congrats :)

Reply

Congratulations!! Would you mind sharing your strength regime? I struggle maintaining that side of training!

Reply

Great work, Janae!!! Something I need to work on is going out too fast, so I’m glad you listened to yourself! It’s so hard not to, but so worth it in the end. Congrats on a great time!

Reply

WOW!! That is incredible! Great job, Janae! You’re a rock star!

xo

Reply

Way prefer running on my own! It’s like my ‘me time’. Also I’m pretty bad so talking would make me get out of breath lol.

Goals for this week: Drink less. Move more. Finally catch up with college work!

Reply

Umm, I am pretty sure I ran with you on Saturday for a bit! I totally recognize your race outfit, I think maybe around the last uphill that went under the overpass? Ha, anyway congrats love your blog and look forward to reading about your next training cycle.

Reply

Congratulations on a great race & negative split! Well done, Janae!

Reply

Congrats! At mile 6 you knew it was going to be a good day?!!! =). Great race J. Can you promise me that if…from now until next year St.George we don’t meet IRL, that we meet at next year’s race?! =).

Reply

Congratulations! That is an amazing time, especially considering the difficulty of the course and your recent injuries.

I have a half marathon this weekend and I am really hoping to break 1:30 for the first time.

Do you have any race strategies for the half? Would you recommend trying to negative split a half too? Any advice would be greatly appreciated – my PB is 1:31, but I’ve been training like a mad woman for this one. Thanks.

Reply

Wonderful job in your race! And beautiful pictures. If I ever make it to your part of the country, I will have to run this one :)

Reply

this is so inspirational. congratulations!

Reply

Your pace puts me in awe. Congratulations on such a fantastic race! Good job staying positive even without music!

The most beautiful race I have ever run was the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon. It went through a bunch of vineyards and country roads. It was gorgeous!

I have only run a couple of races with other people. I really like running on my own, it also gives me an opportunity to talk to new people during the race.

My goal for the week is to take my taper seriously and show up well-rested on race day Sunday.

I race with music. Sometimes it really helps get me through a rough patch during a race.

Reply

DEFINITELY MAKES ME WANT TO RUN THIS RACE!

What a solid and impressive race, Janae! Sometimes I really think that we do best without the pressure? Almost works the same as beginner’s luck. Does that make sense? IDK, if it doesn’t I’m sorry–lots of miles this weekend and very poor sleep!

So glad it went well for you! The scenery looks incredible and I bet it was even better in person/with endorphins!

Goals for this week= make sure my ankle is strong through this taper and spend a little more time with things I’ve had to put on the back burner with all the high mileage weeks. IT’S TAPER TIME!

Reply

You are AMAZING! All without music?? Way to go, Janae!!

I’m running the Chicago Marathon on Sunday! It is number 6 for me. Can’t wait!

Why visitors still make use of to read news papers when in this technological world the whole thing is existing on web?

Reply

Congratulations, Janae!! Awesome job!! You’re such an inspiration!! I’m running the Athens Classic Marathon in less than 5 weeks, my first!! :)

Reply

Congratulations on another incredible race!! You are truly amazing!! I can’t imagine getting through 26.2 miles without music!

Reply

Congratulations on such an incredible race!! Reading your recap is making me so excited for my upcoming first marathon this weekend…Saturday can’t come soon enough! Thanks for the inspiration :)

Reply

Congratulations!! Any chance you might post your training routine (both weekly mileage and tips on the strength training you did)? I always love your blogs and your smile. You look like you’re having a blast. I run Boston (via the Melanoma Foundation of New England) in April and would love to PR (previous is 3:56 in Savannah). Any tips from fast runners like yourself I gobble up. Keep up the blogging!

Congrats on the negative split race! I ran the St. George Marathon last year – beautiful scenery and great volunteers that put icy-hot on my legs. I needed it after those hills!

Reply

Congrats on a great race! I love running negative splits.

Big Sur was by far the most beautiful marathon I’ve run. Sections of the Cherry Blossom Ten-Miler are gorgeous if you’re lucky and the cherry blossoms peak for race day.

My next race is the Hokie Half at my alma mater this coming Sunday. I can’t wait, and I’m already trying to decide what outfit to wear!

Reply

Congrats on your run Janae! Your running pace is awesome by the way! I’m in awe!

Can I just say, I’ve been mildly stalking your blog for awhile now, and I just have to keep coming back to see what’s new with you and Brooke. I’ve had a bit of a knee injury the last few months, so it’s been great to hear about your rehab.

When I can run, I tend to run by myself mostly. I’m SO looking forward to getting back into some proper running again.

You ROCK! You are such and inspiration!! Congrats on an AMAZING race speedy lady!!! Loved the tips (which I will use for my first marathon in November) :)

Reply

So exciting! Which one are you running Amy?

Reply

Aww thanks Doni! I’m running the Morgan Hill Marathon!

Reply

Congratulations, M’Dear! Clearly, a race well run!

I am running my last long training run before my marathon this week. A 23-miler. So, I’m mentally gearing up for that. I always prefer to run with someone. My husband is going to “sherpa” for me on this one on his bike. <3

Most beautiful marathon would have to be Tahoe. It's also one of the hardest I've done, so maybe I was just appreciating anything distracting (like a gorgeous lake and mountains).

Congrats again! You have a lot to be proud of!

Reply

Great recap! Love this since I am running my first marathon in 4 weeks! Sucks about the music but great that u didn’t let it affect u! Awesome time on your marathon! Beautiful pics! When is your next race? Oh and where did u get the ice cubes to put in your bra!? Did they have ice at the water stations?

Reply

Congratulations!!! I’m glad it went so well! It looks like an amazing course! I ran my first marathon yesterday (one I’ve watched and cheered at since I was a kid) and I’ve been taking lots of tips from you. Thank you! They all helped prepare me well. I’m looking forward to your recovery tips.

Reply

Congratulations! so glad the race went well for you, and the course looks beyond beautiful!

Reply

This. Makes me want to sign up for another marathon right noooow! Way to go!

Reply

I always race with music! I can’t run without it. The most beautiful race I’ve ran was the Ruston Way 10k on the waterfront in downtown Tacoma, WA. It’s beautiful!

Reply

You did amazing ! Great time! I loved reading your tips

Reply

Wow, that race sounded great. Congratulations on such an awesome time. I love music on my run. Thanks for the tips!

Oh. My. Gosh. This is amazing. You are amazing. You are so inspirational to me. I want to be you when I grow up. Ok, I’m older than you, but still. :) Congrats, Girl. Enjoy your awesomeness.

#1. Sold on now wanting to enter to do this one next year.

#2. Ice in the bra got me through the Philly half earlier this year. Yowza…best idea ever.

Xo inspired as always!

It sounds like you had a really good time and have learnt alot over the years. i have just done my first ever half marathon in the North of England and it was lovely bur not the most beautiful. My fav is trail runs i do while training in the woods. it is so beautiful. It was good to hear your experence on a full marathon. I like your tips on Nutrition as i am very bad at this!
I used to always listen to music but have stopped as enjoying no music. I will probably change back at some point! I run with my friends when i am at work and a runing club but enjoy running on my own when doing long sessions as it takes the pressure off me. I feel pressured easy.

Reply

Yay, sounds like you had a lot of fun! well done !

Reply

Congrats! Did you prefer walking through the water stations? I’ve never tried that. I think Canyonlands might be the prettiest course I’ve ever run, or Falmouth (Cape Cod) for a full Marathon. The Vermont City Marathon is also beautiful, as is SLC, but I really didn’t like that course.

Reply

Congratulations on an awesome finish. I am doing my first half on 26th October so I am taking tips from your post.

Crazy confession: I live on a small island so when people say they are on a hill that goes on for miles, I can hardly imagine that because no stretch of road goes on for a long time here.

Reply

Congrats on your finish!!!! As I approach the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, my mission to get to bed at a decent time every night this week and to drink lots of water, one serving containing electrolytes :-) Thanks for the inspiration and motivation that I’ll need for Chicago this weekend!

Reply

What is Veyo? I Googled it and it says a town in Utah? So confused…trying to learn all I can from you. Glad you had such a great experience, thanks for breaking it all down for us wanna be runners!! xo, Jess

congrats! you are such a running rockstar! you should feel SO proud =) hope you and brooke are having the best time at disneyland!!!

Reply

You. Are. My. Hero.
Always run on my own. Always race with music. Can’t live without it.

Reply

I ran the Nike women’s half in San Fran last year. It was gorgeous. Except it was so foggy on race morning that you couldn’t see the Golden Gate bridge when we ran by!

I don’t ever run with music. I’m a weirdo that just really loves running for what it is. I’ve gone through phases but for the past year or so just want to run and listen to nature!

Also congrats on your race!! Amazing. A 3:15 marathon is a huge goal for me in the next couple years.

Reply

You are ah-maz-ing!! Way to go girl!!! Guess what, this past weekend I had my very first apple fritter!!! (they’re hard to find in NJ) and it was life changing!

Reply

I ran the Portland Marathon this weekend, it took me twice as long to finish as it did you, but that’s OK.

Where in the world did you get the ice?

Reply

Don’t forget to update your “Marathon Times” listed on the left-hand side of your page to add the awesome time at St. George!!

I dont run competitively anymore, but music always seemed to keep me focused.
Congratulations on your run! Great pictures along the way.

Fantastic work out there! You’re an inspiration! And, your next post on DisneyLand is fabulous, I remember going there as a child and can’t wait to take my kids there one day (when I have some ;)
Congrats again, and great idea on posting all those awesome tips too – stuff I don’t usually think of, and super helpful. Way to go, Janae :)

I’m so glad you had such a great race. It was an awesome day. It’s such a gorgeous course, I loved it just as much this year as I did last year and I sure hope I’ll be running it next year too!

I like doing a fun run with other people. However, I have only done races solo. I feel like I can take advantage of when I feel good, but slow down if I need to and not influence anyone. It seems so personal and so many factors can influence your run…so far its been just me. :) I just ran the SG Marathon this weekend too! I haven’t run a marathon in 12 years, and so this was my first time back. I have loved reading your blog and seeing what you were doing to prepare each day. It was comforting to get tips from someone training for the same race, and really helped me feel a little less nervous. I am so grateful I found your blog a few months ago at the perfect time. I did much better than I had expected (no where near your time) so I was REALLY happy! My race was the same…my second half was faster. I think it really helped just enjoying the first part and not pushing myself too hard. Looking forward to hearing what your upcoming exercise plans are! I have some sore quads I need to exercise. :)

Huge congratulations Natalie!!!!!!

Reply

Love the race report and your tips! Congrats on a spectacular day!!

Reply

I did a race near the beach last year and while the bridge-hills were rough, the sights were GORGEOUS!

I would love to run with friends… but every time we try to start a race together, something always happens!

I have to run with music! I wish I could just tune into the run and it would be enough but I need the blast of my ipod!

Reply

Congratulations on a super speedy finish, Janae! I don’t know how you do it – but it is sure inspiring. Great tips too! I ran the Portland Marathon on Sunday and wish I would have paced better and had additional nutrition with me. It was a hot day in Oregon and I was not prepared out on the course. Result = cramps. I did have a 10 minute PR and qualified for Boston by several minutes, so I am super excited!

I may have to look into the St. George Marathon for the future. I would love to spend some time in Utah! I never run with music and prefer to run my own race, but still have family/friends involved. The most beautiful race I have ever done is the Seattle Marathon – but it was also the most difficult.

Congrats time a bazillion. I freaking love ya friend. YOU ARE AMAZING!!!
