A BUNCH OF RANDOMNESS

-This first tangent includes three pictures.  We went up to Ikea with our favorite California friend and bought a trillion picture frames, ate thai chicken lettuce wraps (they made a great appetizer for lunch an hour later;) and honestly, how do I say no to stuffed animals that are $5 each when Brooke is so cute with them.

IMG 7698

-Brooke wanted to show off her Minnie Mouse PJ’s.  This was after I ran a very sweaty/hot/treadmill 7 miles at a little under 8:00 pace.  Somedays running just feels a lot harder but I am thinking a day off tomorrow will make my 20 miler later on this week feel like a million bucks.

IMG 7689

-Teaching spin was a blast last night.  Felt good to be back doing something I absolutely love to do.  I will keep including my spin playlists on the blog (PS a reader gave me the idea yesterday to have my class turn up the tension every time the song ‘Turns Down For What’ said Turns Down…  Let’s just say we had to increase our tension about 100 times.  It was a killer workout).

IMG 7696

-Brooke is going to be gone this weekend and I usually start dreading her being gone for a week in advance.  I get this sick feeling in my stomach leading up to it (not because I worry but just because I know I am going to miss her and it makes the whole situation so real).  I am working on this.

-I am proud of the fact that I have demolished this 2.5 lbs of spinach all on my own before it has gone bad.  Talent.

IMG 7705

-My mom made us her famous pancakes the other day (I don’t know what I am doing in the picture).  WHY DOES FOOD TASTE SOOO MUCH BETTER WHEN YOUR MOM MAKES IT!?!

IMG 7675

-If I am hangry then this shirt is pretty accurate.

IMG 7672

-You can only get away with playing in the water fountains in your clothes for so long.  Good thing there was a store nearby that I could buy some Halloween pajamas for her to change in to so that we could go to dinner with my sister.

IMG 7569

IMG 7575

-Love it when Brooke’s books remind me of the important stuff.

IMG 7593

-For the first 26 years of my life I was a Crest girl.  When I got pregnant I could not stand the taste of mint and made the switch to Colgate.  I will never turn back.. for some strange reason I love the taste so much of this stuff.

My tangent today is running related. I hate when something in your day happens and completely throws off your running plans for the night! This is why i should start running in the morning! haha

My mom makes the BEST rice pudding! I am so excited the holidays are coming up so I can have some!

I’m a total pushover when my little one wants a stuffed animal. My mom makes amazing banana cream pie. We use Crest. That picture reminded me of my walker :( I hope your friend is okay!

My Tuesday tangent…I’m hungry.

Reply

I just got a small bag of Brach’s Autumn Mix Candy Corn. It says there are 3.5 servings, but it is only 1 for sure.

Reply

That was my tangent.

Reply

I read somewhere that they are actually only .5 serving… Go grab another bag

Reply

My mom is a great Italian cook but something she cooks that I can just never do as well as her is broiled breaded chicken. Sounds simple but hers is just way better! And I agree with one of the above comments…Brooke’s skeleton pjs are adorable! This whole post makes me want to cuddle in bed with my little guy all day.

Reply

My favorite spin instructor will have us turn up the resistance during the song “Roxanne” every time they sing the name Roxanne. Also killer, even if you start out with really light tension!

Reply

Such a good idea! THANK YOU REBECCA!

Reply

My mom does not really cook or bake, but you can go over to her house anytime and she has the best produce. Woman loves her fruits and veggies.

Tangent today: parents are banned from watching my 4 year old daughter’s dance class and being the overprotective parent I am, I am standing guard at the door until class is over. Also, how can I help her practice her moves if I can’t SEE them?!? :)

Reply

Tangent: I barely missed getting caught in a thunderstorm this morning on my run = score!
Toothpaste: Usually Crest, but I like to switch it up..
Food: My Mom bakes the BEST snickerdoodle cookies. While I usually like everything chocolate, there is something special about these snickerdoodles! :)

Reply

I use Colgate. And my tangent: I used to only buy Crest, but then I had a bad reaction to their mouthwash and now I refuse to buy anything from them. Their mouthwash (temporarily) ruined my ability to taste sweet things (which, for someone with a massive sweet tooth like me, was completely horrible!! It was so weird to eat a piece of candy and literally taste nothing…) and it made me mad that they didn’t include that on their warning label with other side effects, even though they know it happens to a bunch of people. It took over a week for my taste buds to go back to normal.

Reply

Hi Janae! I am a Crest girl. Better than that. My daughter is having our first Grandbaby in January. It’s a GIRL

Reply

I use Crest. I really like minty anything :)
Random: Go to Kneaders and get a slice of their pumpkin chocolate chip cake. You won’t regret it.
Have a great Tuesday night!!

Reply

The song Sail by Awolnation – everytime he says “Sail” you turn up resistance – it starts really easy but by then end you are dying. My mom makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. I raid her freezer everytime I go over there because I just can’t help myself!

Reply

LOVE IT!! THANK YOU SAM!!!

Reply

I need those Halloween skeleton pajamas for me! That is adorable.

Random: Open House at my high school (where I work) this week… Thursday will be a long night.. I might have to take the night off working-out–especially because we still have school on Friday.

My mom makes really good Monkey Bread.

Reply

Okay, now I am craving Monkey Bread really badly! YES, give yourself a little break on such a long day! Good luck!

Reply

I actually recently switched to Honest Company toothpaste. Virtually no flavor at all! Tangent: today I’m planning to bake two loaves of banana bread plus a batch of brownies. For no reason at all.

Reply

I’ll be over in 2 hours to come eat that all with you:)

Reply

I use the toothpaste in a stand up container. I think it’s crest but I could be wrong. I hate tubes. Lol. Just have a weird aversion to anything in a tube.

My mom makes good pot roast. And corn fritters.

Reply

Tangent of the day I just quit my job. Eek!

Reply

Brookers looks just like Curly in that PJ picture!

Reply

Okay this is off topic, but how do i get to use an icon? Everyone else has one and I have the grey anonymous one, which makes me feel kinda lame!

Also, does your Ikea offer one dollar breakfasts?

Reply

Brooke totally masters the cute puppy eye look in order to get that panda!

Reply

Random tangent: I’m back at teaching Pilates tomorrow and I’m really excited because I love to teach, but nervous because what if nobody shows up???

Colgate for me. No reason; that’s just what I buy.

My mom makes the best spare ribs and potatoe salad–not together, though.

Reply

Good luck with your Pilates class! Don’t be nervous :)

Reply

I use Crest :-)

My mom really only makes one thing well – Creme Puffs.

Reply

My mom makes the best pumpkin bread!
I am also a colgate girl. But I also use sensodyne pronamel because I have really sensitive teeth.

Reply

I love Brooke’s pjs! So cute :)

Reply

Firstly, your spinach eating abilities AMAZE me, it really is a talent! I hardly get through even a small bag before it starts to go bad, so props to you

I use Sensodyne for my finnicky teeth, but if I had it my way I’d totally still be using the kids Crest with the glitter in it (do they even make that still?!)

My mom makes that best rice balls!!

Reply

Oh my goodness, I love Brooke’s halloween pj’s – so adorable! I feel you, whatever my mum cooks ends up being delicious!

I use Crest–I like the way it stings the tongue (If it hurts, it must be cleaning stuff, right?)

Reply

I use Crest 3D White. It works for me, so I don’t stray.
Congrats on a great spin class!!
Rando Tangent: I cooked with black bean pasta for the first time tonight!

Hi Janae,

Random question that doesn’t relate to today’s post (but I like Tom’s of Maine, especially fennel!).

You’ve mentioned the Graston Technique in some of your posts. I have been having this procedure done for achilles tendonitis a couple weeks in a row that has been a real killer. The PT has been so aggressive I work up a sweat from the discomfort…like when it feels like my skin is going to be rubbed off. Do YOU ever feel like that?

Reply

Hey Steve! I am so sorry about your Achilles Tendonitis… ouch! You described graston perfectly… ‘skin is going to be rubbed off.’ I usually shed a few tears and grab the table incredibly hard because it hurts so bad. I LOVE how it feels afterwards and how much it has helped with different issues but it definitely works up a sweat. I hope you get better ASAP!

Reply

I’m so impressed that you finished the whole bag of spinach!! It’s SO hard to do! And I use Crest 3D white- love it! :)

xo

Reply

Using up a bag of spinach is always a challenge for me. I’ve started buying the frozen bags because I mostly use it in smoothies and I hate wasting food.

Pretty much everything my mom makes is good but if I had to pick 1 thing, her cheesecake is completely amazing. She makes a bunch of different kinds and they are all so good.

Reply

My mom makes the best chicken salad sandwiches so when I want one, I always try to get her to make it for me!

Tangent for the day is that I just realized that for the most part if I’m not in the gym, I’m never listening to anything when I have my headphones in! I put them in and forget to turn something on!

Reply

I’m typically Crest or Pro Enamel or whatever the dentist gives me for free :)

I <3 teaching, even on the bad days, even when the kids drive me nuts. I get to laugh every single day.

I like my mom's chicken and dumplings and her lasagna is pretty awesome!

Reply

Those pink PJs that Brooke has on are toooo cute!
toothpaste: Crest 3D whitening :)
best meal by mom: pumpkin bisque soup (it is AMAZING!)
Tuesday tangent: Today I discovered the reason why paying attention in algebra class was so important in high school…not because I have found it useful in actual day-to-day life, but rather because you are going to need to help your child understand why they need to “solve for x”. sigh.

Glad your spin class went well!

Reply

My mom makes the best mexican food.! We’re mexican so of course : ] Tamales, posole, shrimp cocktail, homemade tortillas.. ah everything.

love Brooke’s new pj’s.! I swear my daughter and her would be awesome friends. lol

Reply

There’s this family recipe where we make angel food cake and make an apricot nectar to go on top of it, and it is absolutely AMAZING. I didn’t make any this summer, and I’ve missed it!

Reply

I found a random tube of toothpaste in a clearance bin and it’s lime and mint flavored. HELLO Mojito toothpaste, where have you been all my life?!?!?!

Reply

I cannot even handle the cuteness of Brooke in those PJs. Do they come in adult size?!?!

My mom’s cheesecake is the bomb.

Reply

Food def tastes better when your mom makes it. That’s a scientific fact. That’s an impressive amount of spinach to eat! good job :)

Reply

My daughter does the same thing at ikea! How many animals did you end up buying? ;)

Reply

too many. hahahahaha!

Reply

Colgate total girl here! I love my moms apple pie and lasagna! You are such a fun mom! :)

Reply

So funny about the toothpaste – I switch kinds almost every time I need a new tube (same with soap and shampoo/conditioner). My husband prefers the exact same brand of all of his toiletries every single time!!!

Reply

I am a loyal Rembrandt user! I love when my mom makes my favorite casserole Mexican Chicken. Never been much of a baked goods kinda girl!

Reply

I feel like in general when other people cook it is always better. My mom is no exception to this. She cooks a mean breakfast egg scramble. Oh to be a kid and go to dinner in Halloween pajamas.

Reply

Brooke is too cute playing in the fountain! My daughter would do the same thing!

I can mix it up, but most often it’s Crest.

I’m running the Chicago marathon and am more nervous about the logistics of such a big race and meeting up with my fam than I am about the actual run! Ahh! Can you tell I’m a marathon rookie??

My mom makes the best French toast! I never order it at a restaurant because I know I’ll be disappointed!

Reply

My mom makes the best carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I always try to make it but never takes as good as when she does.

Reply

Forgot randomness for the day. My son (18 mths) randomly blurted out “caterpillar” it made me laugh

Reply

I need your mom’s cake asap! UMMMM he said caterpillar at 18 months—> baby genius! SO AWESOME!

Reply

Wait – I had NO idea you taught spin for so long! I am officially your biggest fan! I am a group fitness director at a Y here! I teach spin, but mostly cardio fitness and stuff and I love it :)

Reply

Oh my gosh those halloween pj’s. #needalittleonetodressup

Right now I am taking a break from studying to read your blog! First nursing school test in less than 12 hours! I would love it if you prayed for me :)

Reply

Done and done! You’ve got this Samantha! GOOD LUCK!

Reply

We have those pjs. My 7 year old wore them at age 4 and they glow in the dark. Ours REALLY glows in the dark. One night she got up and came into our bedroom and stood beside my husband who was asleep in bed. It was just heavy breathing from her and a glow in the dark skeleton. My husband woke up and jumped at the sight. I don’t even remember why she came in but he still hates those jammies. My 3 year old will have those Pjs passed down this October and my husband is already dreading it! By the way I laughed my head off at the situation.

Reply

That is a fabulous story, thanks for sharing! I had a nice chuckle : )

Reply

I usually get whichever toothpaste is on sale, but always mint. I love hearing womens’ pregnancy aversions, they are so random sometimes!

My mom makes awesome banana bread. So good!

Oh and kids books are the best. I love the page you shared with us :)

Reply

Oh my goodness Brooke is so awesome! Love that she got drenched then got some cute pjs out of it…love it.
Is it only Tuesday?

Reply

CREST – CLEAN MINT
MY MOM USED TO MAKE THE BEST CHILLI AND BREADSTICKS. SHE ALSO MADE THE BEST LASAGNA, salad and garlic bread. Oops sorry for the caps. Lol. Brooke is such a love muffin, and I’m sorry your belly hurts just thinking of her leaving…hurts mine too. It must be hard. :( Also that book, it’s so true…not looking back is the healthier route…easier said than done. Love your openness and honesty Janae! XO

Reply

I am a Colgate girl as well.

My mom makes the most amazing spaghetti… and anything she bakes like cookies, muffins or pie is to die for!

Brooke’s books are the bomb. “Don’t look back, you’re not going that way!” No truer words were ever spoken.

Reply

LOVE those Halloween PJs. Moms always make the best food.

Reply

Fellow spinach addict here – I broke my previous record of one week and went through an entire Costco tub of spinach in literally 4 days. So. Many. Green. Smoothies.

Anddddd my mom is Korean, and she makes the BEST korean meat ever, bulgogi. I won’t even attempt to make it because I know it wont be nearly as good!

Reply

I have an adopted Korean mom and her bulgogi is pretty much my favorite thing on earth. That or her oxtail soup.

Reply

Colgate Sensitive. My teeth don’t do well with cold thing (I deal with it for ice cream). I don’t know that I could switch.

Everything my mom makes is good! I do love her chicken curry and meatloaf though.

Random thing about me – I’m terrified of grasshoppers. One jumped on me yesterday and totally freaked me out. My neighbors must’ve wondered about the dance I was doing in my front yard…

Reply

The Sensodyne works really good for sensitive teeth too. They make one that comes in a can and it’s really fun to use.

Reply

I love the Arm and Hammer Peroxicare. My mom makes the best lasagna! Though I’m sure you might have to disagree with that one. ;)

Reply

I love switching toothpastes! I can’t stick with one for too long. I get excited to pick a new one! Same with shampoo- can’t ever get the same two in a row! haha its a problem.

Reply

I’m currently using Crest 3D White but I think I like Colgate Total better. Brooke is a gorgeous little lady and her Minnie Mouse PJ’s are totally show off worthy. My Mother in Law is Mexican and makes EVERYTHING homemade. I can’t pick just one thing but I’ll tell you it isn’t difficult to want to just keep eating her flour tortillas. Get Up And Step Away From The Table…

Reply

Crest for sure!
My mom makes the best oatmeal raisinette cookies.. in a normal oatmeal cookie recipe just replace rasisins with raisinette candy.. heavenly!

Reply

That is my favorite Mary Engelbreit quote and have a big poster of it in my dining room. What book is that you have?

I’ve recently switched to Colgate too but I’m not particular to any brand – I mostly go for what’s on sale.

I agree – mom’s food always tastes a thousand times better.

Reply

Moms make the best food for sure!

Reply

I always use Crest 3D White. I figure with all the coffee I drink, I need something to make sure I don’t end up with brown teeth!

My mom makes the best Christmas cookies (which are very different than regular cookies).

**PS: I think any food made by someone other than myself is better :)

Reply

That is so funny. My mom was a Crest girl until she got pregnant with me then also had to switch to Colgate. :) I’m a Crest girl simply because I never got to use it growing up (maybe that’ll change when/if I ever have kiddos).

My tangent is that I’m very excited to go for a run with my best friend who I haven’t seen in two weeks! She is pregnant, so I’m looking forward to seeing how much her belly has grown since the last time I saw her. :)

Reply

I like to use Aquafresh….they used to make it with Stars in the gel waaay back in he 90’s. I’ve been a fan ever since. :)

Tagents…. I started my day with hopes of a 5 mile run…..my legs were dead from teaching BodyPump the last two nights, so it turned in to a 4 mile run instead. Oh well, on a different note: my peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch today was wonderful! Grape jelly, always.

My Mom would make the best cinnamon rolls, meatloaf, and she always had a way with making sandwiches so that every bite had the perfect amount of everything. Miss her daily!! <3

Reply

I have PJs like those pink skeletons for my girls too! Only their sets are glow-in-the-dark and sometimes, it scares the little one a bit. Funny! Love Jammies!

Reply

I use whatever samples the dentist gives me! I have never actually bought a toothpaste.. my dental hygenist is my friend and she always loads me up :)
