Moving into our own place and having our own kitchen has brought out my love for cooking and baking again.  I love trying out new recipes and spending time in the kitchen preparing meals so I was stoked to try out Blue Apron (a symbol of lifelong learning —> chefs that are in training wear blue aprons).

It was crazy easy for me to set up an account and choose a day for them to deliver the food to our apartment.  You can check out the menu each week and choose what you would like according to your dietary preferences.  Each meal (per person) that they send out is between 500-700 calories and it lists the calories for each meal on the recipe card.

You can choose for them to send servings for 2, 4 or 6 people per meal and they send three meals a week.  Shipping is always free (they ship to 80% of the country.. you can see where they ship to HERE) and they charge $9.99 per person per meal.  Also, you can skip or cancel the service at any time—>  I feel like that shows how confident they are in their product because they don’t tie you into a contract or purchasing a certain number of weeks of meals.

Everything was delivered right to my door in the perfect proportions for me and the Brookers.

The food came in refrigerated boxes so even if you aren’t home when it is all delivered it will stay fresh until you get home.  Everything is farm-fresh from local suppliers.  All of the veggies/fruit were very bright and flavorful and the bread was super soft and fresh.  I love the fact that I didn’t have to go to the grocery store for anything.  Carrying a two year old and a bunch of groceries to my apartment isn’t my favorite thing to do.  This was incredibly convenient.

It is also so nice to get the exact amount of food that you need (even for things like soy sauce or sesame oil).  With just two of us it is easy for me to buy way too much and have some items go to waste and so I loved that we were able to get exactly what we needed.

Each box comes with recipe cards for each meal with easy to follow steps.

I love that they include pictures of what each step should look like too.  I feel like I learned a lot of new cooking tips and techniques through these recipes.

The thing that I loved most about trying Blue Apron out was that it got me to really branch out and make things that I have never made before.  All three meals that I made were meals that I have never made anything even similar to.  Added bonus—> Each of the three meals took me 35 minutes or less to prepare.

We both loved the Pan-Seared Cod and I felt pretty cool for making such a pretty dish:)

I loved learning new techniques like pickling grapes in white wine vinegar—>  these were so so good.

Vietnamese-Style “Shaking” Beef with Lime-Jasmine Rice & Dressed Plum.  This rice was amazing and I loved the plum and beef combination.

We also LOVED the Mexican-Style Turkey Burger with Warm Corn & Tomato Salad.  I could eat this meal a few times a week and be happy.  I can definitely see how Blue Apron would be super addicting because they have so many amazing recipes to try and they constantly have new recipes coming out.  All of their meal pictures make me drool a little.  They also have an awesome COOKBOOK!

DSC 0466

I love that Blue Apron allows you to enjoy all of the best parts about making a meal—> the cooking and the eating part:)  I didn’t have to search for amazing recipes (they sent them right to me), go to the store for ingredients or figure out the right proportions for just two people.

We both loved trying new things (ummm I usually cook the same 5 meals over and over again so we needed to get out of my cooking rut) and I honestly really enjoyed the taste of each meal.  I also loved watching Brooke try and experience different flavors and foods.

Quick question – know you said you got that magnet/picture frame from soel boutique…but I called yesterday and they said they have never heard of it. I cant seem to find it anywhere online. Want to give it as a gift to my friend who’s going back to work after having her first kiddo. Thanks!

Oh no Rachel! I am so sorry… the Journal is from there! I got the magnet board from Four Chairs Furniture and they should be able to order one in for you! Their number is 801-796-3400
Let me know how it goes! They open at 10 Utah time (so in 3 hours and 40 minutes). GOOD LUCK! It is my favorite and that is so sweet of you to get that for your friend!

Awesome meal ideas! I need something like this!

Aw, so sad – I was early enough to be one of the first 50, but unfortunately they don’t deliver to my area! Bummer! This sounds super cool, and those recipes look so yummy! I’ll have to check out the cookbook for some more ideas!

same for me :O(

same here :(

Agh! Of course I live in the 20% of the country that they don’t deliver to! It looks amazing, and it would be nice to have the perfect proportions sent to you. I hate buying spices, condiments, etc. that I only need a tablespoon of, then the rest of the bottle sits there and doesn’t get used!

So awesome always wanted to try this!

Those meals look SO GOOD! I am totally in a cooking rut, too. It’s just so easy to make the same things over and over again… I need to spend some time browsing Pinterest for recipes ;)

Reply

Oh nooo they don’t deliver to my zip code! I was looking forward to trying this. Is this only a Utah company?

Reply

Enjoy two free… but must purchase enough for 2 people and a total of 6 meals (ie. still have to pay $40)! Tricky tricky, but thanks for the great deal Janae! The meals look delicious

Hmmm, I wish I could afford a Blue Apron meal to show up on my door step every single night =) hehe

I like how fresh everything is and how they package it in nice plastic bags. Shipping must come speedy since they even pack herbs and vegetables! I wonder if they ship to Canada.

Blue apron is perfect! Blue for healthy, Apron for kitchen :)

Buy Products from the US with delivery to Montreal

There is a new service that will buy products for you in the US, charges duties and taxes (up front) and then delivers to Montreal.

GENIUS!

The recipes you made sounded like you were some gourmet chef…seriously, who uses plum?! Totally love it!

Exciting. I might need this in my life. :) #cookingchallenged

I got my parents a gift card here over the summer- they haven’t tried it yet but I have been wanting to try it out for myself!

Reply

Awww man! They don’t deliver in my area yet. Now I must wipe the drool away along with my tears! It all looks so delicious. It is so easy to get stuck in that rut and make the same things over and over. What a cool idea!

I know Blue Apron has been making the blog rounds lately….and I know that you need to make money from your blog to help support yourself and Brooke, but I think this service is so incredibly wasteful (due to all of the packaging) and expensive. Is this HONESTLY something you would consider buying yourself if it wasn’t given to you for free?

Reply

I doubt she can write back that she wouldn’t use this product. Since she’s endorsing the service she can’t very well write that she wouldn’t use the service under different circumstances. You make a really good point though and I agree with you that since she’s supporting herself and her daughter it’s understandable to do business like this.

Reply

Looks pretty awesome to me! Takes so much of the stress, planning out of meals :)

Reply

I really love the idea…but they don’t deliver to my zip code. Gosh darnit.

Reply

$10 per person per meal? Yikes that’s about what I spend in a day for all of my meals.

Reply

I agree. I can eat out (healthy meals) for much cheaper and not have to worry about cooking and cleaning. If I cook it myself I could obtain the ingredients when I go grocery shopping anyway and it would come out even cheaper and fresher. Unfortunately, I have to say I am not a fan.

Reply

I tried Blue Apron, but it was hit or miss. Some recipes were really good and quick, others took too long for me!

Reply

Yeah, was going to try the two free, but they make you order a minimum of six meals, so not going to spend $40 to try them out. Looks like a nice service, just too pricey for me!

Reply

Wonder if they deliver to Mass?!

Reply

Looks pretty delicious. This is such a good idea!

Reply

Thank you! Thank you! Can’t wait for my delivery:)))

Reply

Blue Apron doesn’t deliver to Omaha. :( So Sad!

Reply

This looks great! I went to order, but they don’t have food preferences for food allergies. Darn…This would be such a great solution if they catered to people with food allergies!

Reply

BOO! I just tried to click on it and it didn’t work…

That looks awesome and I am SERIOUSLY considering it for at least once a week.I love trying new things and I’m trying to learn to cook well….Thanks for the fun new idea!

Reply

I’ve seen Blue Apron pop up all over the blog world, and I’m definitely intrigued! I find myself constantly making the same dishes over and over (hello, grilled chicken and veggies), so it would be nice to add some variety to my weekly menus! Looks like you did a great job, too!

Reply

I love this! For some reason I thought they made the meals for you haha. But I love that they give you all the ingredients. And I know I would have a hard time following their recipes, and would probably create my own dishes, because I’m a rebel like that.

Reply

So bummed, I was early enough to get the offer but they don’t ship to my area! :-(

Reply

Awesome can’t wait to try!

Reply

WOW!!! Look at you discovering your inner Chef-ness!!! I love being in the kitchen and then sharing my love of food and my passion and sharing with others, whether its a sit down dinner with my hubby or having friends over!!!
Enjoy:-)

These meals look very delicious, good job!

Reply

wow! what a fun way to cook! i loved cooking before my kiddos came along, and now 4:00 rolls around and i’m scrounging around to see what i have on hand that can be fixed quickly…resulting in the same meals often. this makes food and cooking look like a blast! and healthy at that :) :) :)

Reply

Awww they don’t deliver to my area! Middle of nowhere probs.. haha :)

The concept is sound – helping people learn how to cook and experiment a bit in the kitchen. However, the cost is astronomical when you have to cook and clean up everything yourself, not to mention the unnecessary packaging and shipping of fresh food across the country. Local suppliers, not even close.

Based on the fact that your “free meals” text is the same as all the other bloggers who shilled for this company, I’m assuming Blue Apron supplied the text. They know it’s completely misleading. Those practices are shady and deceitful and I’m disappointed that you agreed to it.

There are companies worth putting on your blog, but this is not one of them.

I have been using Blue Apron for a while now and I LOVE it! It’s pretty amazing. Great meals and healthy for the whole family.

Reply

Yum! It’d be a bit pricey for my growing family of five but it’d be a great stay in date night with the hubs! I feel like I’ve seen that truck before.

Reply

I think this company is rad. Such a cool concept!

Reply

Wahoo! You totally convinced me to get one of these for Dan and I! Thanks!

With Blue Apron saturating the blog world, it makes me NOT want to try their over-priced and quite-frankly, bland-looking meals. Every review I have read sounds so fake and if it weren’t for free for the blogger, it is highly doubtful they would actually pay for the service. There are plenty of 30min or less recipes online that are just as easy and more economical than spending $10 a person PER meal. Imagine a family of 4 for 3 meals a day…$120/day. Come on, that is ridiculous. Just my opinion; to each their own.

Reply

Also, all of their recipes are posted for free online. So, if you really want to make their recipes and not have to come up with your own, you can do it for free and skip the wasteful packaging and shipping. If going to the grocery store is challenging (which I get it can be with a kid), then use a local delivery service that every grocery chain offers.

Reply

Sounds delicious! That seems super convenient but a little pricey :)

Reply

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s
equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail
on the head. The issue is an issue that too few folks are speaking intelligently about.

I am very happy I came across this during my
hunt for something regarding this.

This is the perfect way for my teenage daughters to learn some responsibility in getting a meal to the table, as well as learning some valuable cooking skills… I signed up today!…. can’t wait to not have to cook every meal in our house! Thank you for the recommendation…

My fiancé and I have been ordering blue apron for months and I can’t imagine my like without it! The food is so tasty and I love that everything is pre measured so I don’t end up wasting food. Blue apron rocks:)

Thank you for sharing your daily life with us, Janae. I love seeing what you and your little cutie are up to. Brooke always looks so happy, great job!

Oh, congrats on teaching spin class again!

To all those that have commemted about it being too pricey or not available in their area…they do have a recipes section. I just scrolled through them and a bunch look good!

Reply

I just tried and didn’t get the discount, booo! Hopefully they will send me some discounts in the future because I would love to try them at some point. My husband is getting tired of eating pasta, haha

Reply

I’ve been wanting to try this out for so long! That cod looks amazing!

Reply

Love the idea, just wish they could offer their service affordably.

Reply

That looks so awesome but they don’t deliver to my area yet! Sometimes I really dislike living in such a small town!!

what a fun concept!

I’ve always been so curious about the intended market for these type of services. I just got a full meal at Panera for $8.99, and I didn’t have to do any cooking or cleanup. So if I wanted to opt for convenience (and who doesn’t?), that seems the way to go to me – cheaper and no work involved! I can get weekly groceries for our family of 2 (one 250 pound hungry man and one nine month prego, so big eaters) for about $60, which covers everything we need for the week, and yet that would only buy us 3 meals with this service. I guess skipping the grocery store would be nice, but it seems like a really expensive way to avoid that chore! I always feel like I must be missing something when I read these reviews!

Reply

I’m hoping that I’m still in the top 50 (since there are folks they don’t deliver to).

The meals look awesome!

Do they have vegetarian options?

Reply

I would love to try this.

Hi Janae, my name is Elsa, i am from Sweden and am a fan of you. I would like to know do you eat any pasta’s because all of your pictures is very paleo. We eat pasta and would like to know if this could effect my running.

I am surprised Brooke eats a full portion, my son is just starting to eat full portions, and it is completely sporatic

I love Blue Apron! But I wish it only took me 35 min or less to prepare the meals…I’ve found it’s taken more like an hour at a minimum to prepare each meal. But the concept is so great and I’ve recommended it to a bunch of family and friends already.
