I think I will spend every Saturday for the rest of my life this way.

The mountains, Jess and running early enough that we didn’t die from the heat but it was also really light out (I do not miss running in the pitch dark winter morning) = a great way to start the day.

8.03 miles and my lungs and legs were definitely feeling it on the hills.  It has been a very long time since I attempted any sort of incline or trail running and my body reminded me of that minor detail.  It will definitely take a good amount of time to build back up my endurance/speed but I am excited to work hard.

IMG 5970

Brooke’s first farmer’s market experience.  The peaches.  One of the absolute best parts about Utah this time of year.

IMG 5980

There was also quite the splash pad going on while we were there.

IMG 5982

After nap time Brooke and I crashed Candice’s family outing and went up to Salt Lake City with them.  PS yes, I do make 99% of my friends through the internet and I don’t remember how I made friends before blogging.

IMG 6009

We tried something new and took the train up north because her girls have been wanting to try it out for a very long time.

IMG 6020

I think I will go to SLC on this every time now—>  fast, super cheap, just get to hang out and relax and Brooke loved it.

IMG 5993

It was a burger and fry kind of a day (and also part of Brooke’s macaroni and cheese.. I need to stop stealing from my child but that mac and cheese was beyond good).  We went to Blue Lemon and my burger with bleu cheese and turkey bacon was just what I needed.

Trails vs. roads?!  Which do you prefer?

Sweet potato fries vs. normal fries?  Which one is the winner in your eyes?

Do you have a good farmer’s market near you?  What do you usually buy there?

TRAILS!! I did 11 miles on the trails Thursday…it was planned to be 8-9 but it’s just so gorgeous on the trails I didn’t want to stop!!! I would love to run on some of your trails- they look gorgeous!!
I love the local farmer’s market. I do go there sometimes- but I have my own large garden, so that’s where most of our produce comes from :)

I love me some sweet potato fries :) Your trails look gorgeous!

love how brooke is eyeing that man’s dog in the picture at the farmer’s market :)

I always buy the breakfast pizza at our market! What a fun way for the kids to travel!

Reply

Sweet potato fries definitely win, although I love regular fries too. I would’ve loved a splash pad while growing up!

Reply

TRAILS!!! :)

Reply

sweet potato fries all day long. I won’t even bother with regular now.

I like “lightly packed trails” like the trail system that goes through Denver. Softer on your body without the technical trail stuff. Although I cannot pass up a good trail run in the foothills either…I love Boulder SO much.

Reply

I like the roads………..I have no coordination for trails! I prefer sweet potato fries, but I honestly have to be in the mood for fries though. And farmers markets are wonderful! I love getting fresh Georgia peaches!

Reply

I live on sweet potatoes but actually think I prefer regular fries because they crisp better. I think. I don’t know – love them both! Although, if I am going to go for fries or onion rings, it’s onion rings all the way.

Reply

There’s a pug in the farmer’s market picture!! Sorry, I have one so that is the first place my attention goes whenever I spot one ;-) I love farmers markets, but I haven’t been making the drive too often…oops.

Reply

1. Trails! Trails are harder but they’ll only make you a better runner :) But Roads for sprinting.

2. Sweet potatoes fries! They have more nutrients than regular potatoes anyways, not that I would eat either on this diet!

3. I don’t have a farmers market near me, but you’d best believe I’d be stocking up on lettuce and a bunch of herbs!

LOVE the farmers’ market! It’s one of my favorite things about summer :)

Splash parks are my kids favorite! I am really not a trail runner by any means but there’s something really peaceful about running trails when I get a chance. I actually have a 10 mile trail race next Saturday which I’m a little nervous about!

Sweet potato versus regular – have to go sweet potato because they don’t need extra flavor :)

Reply

I think I would prefer trails if I lived near any! I try to compensate by running at a waterfront park, but it’s not quite the same.

I love any fries, but always feel super happy when I eat sweet potato fries. I think I must be deficient in some nutrient that they provide because they really perk me up whenever I have them! Or probably not, but I’m content telling myself that. :)

Haven’t had time to go to the farmer’s market this summer, which is kind of a bummer. I get just as excited on grocery day though–it’s one of my favorite feelings to have the fridge completely stocked with lots of beautiful, healthy ingredients. <3

Utah peaches may be one of the best things ever created! I wait all year for their deliciousness! I try to make it to the Downtown Farmers Market a couple time a year but I also like the South Jordan one. I try to buy local as much as I can.

Reply

Awesome run! Hills are tough, but luckily the suffering will make you stronger. I prefer running on trails as long as they’re not really technical (I’m very clumsy). I find them more peaceful and you don’t have to deal with fumes and exhaust from cars driving by. And sweet potato fries are definitely the best!

Reply

I’ve only run on the trails a few times, so I’m going to say roads…but we have tons of trails here so that might change!

Sweet potato fries…always!

We have farmers markets here and they’re pretty awesome! Some of the produce is more expensive than what we’ll see in the grocery stores, but OMG is it good :)

Reply

I like trails, but there aren’t any near me, and I hate to drive to a run. I have a hard enough time fitting in a run without adding drive time. I like to just open my front door and run to the paved path a half mile away.
If there are sweet potato fries on the menu, I am getting them every time!
We have a lot of local farmer’s markets. I buy whatever is in season. Right now is the best time, fresh from the farm corn! Love local cherries, strawberries, and apples too. And flowers wrapped in newspaper.

Reply

Trails! I can’t even remember the last time I ran on roads. Over a year at least.

Sweet potato fries! So good. I make them at home at least once a week.

I love the farmer’s market! Each city around here has one. I always buy whatever is in season. This week it was a seedless watermelon!

Reply

I love how Brooke is following a doggy in the farmer’s market picture :)

Trail running sounds so nice (trees must = nice shade) but unfortunately I don’t have any trails near me. Well, one of our parks has a trail but it’s only 2 miles long and for bikers … Runners have to get out of the way. Humph!

Trails OR roads :)

Regular fries. I can’t stand sweet potatoes. It makes me really really sad but I just don’t like them.

There is a farmers market near us but it isn’t the greatest.

I want a burger now :/

Reply

In a perfect world, TRAILS! But in my real life city dwelling, I am almost always on the road. It’s a drive to get to trails from here so I usually just end up on the pavement for time’s sake.

Sweet potato fries forever! So good with ranch, which totally cancels out any minor healthiness but it’s just heaven in your mouth.

Looks like you had a great weekend! That fountain looks like so much fun!

Reply

Trails beat roads for me. Only problem is I avoid the really good, natur-y ones unless I have a buddy, since I’m afraid to go alone.

Reply

I can’t run anymore due to an injury that didn’t heal, but when I did, I loved running the trail at my lake. I would run it all summer training for half marathon in September. Miss running soooo much.

Sweet potato fries with a chipotle dip or ketchup!

Haven’t been to the farmers market yet this summer. I always buy these spinach turnover things from the Romainian? ladies….so good!

Reply

I have never run on a trail! I need to do that at some point..
Definitely sweet potato fries!
I went to a local farmers once this summer and wasnt impressed. But there is another one nearby that is supposed to be really good so I’ll need to check that out!

Reply

Roads, but I want to try trail running.
Sweet Potatoes Fries all the way!
I love the farmers market. Its right by my favorite running trail so I go after my long runs on Saturday. I buy lots of veggies!!

Reply

I had sweet potato fries yesterday too. Delicious! I went to Cubbys for the first time. I loved it!

Reply

I prefer roads but I have just started doing some trail running again and have been LOVING it!

Reply

I have only attempted ROAD but one of my goals is to find a good trail path since I have heard it is much better for the joints.

As per fries, there is no question: SWEET POTATO!!

Reply

Do paved trails count? :) I love running on the golf cart paths around where my in-laws live. Sweet potato fries 90% of the time, but then sometimes I’m just in the mood for ketchup so I need regular fries so I can eat my ketchup. We don’t have a farmer’s market but every Friday we have locally grown fruit/veggies and eggs delivered to our house! It’s sooo much fun because we never know what we are going to get. That train looks like a lot of fun.

Reply

Right now I still prefer roads but I like trails too. I’m still building a running base and the technicalities and steep hills on some trails is still too hard.

I like both sweet potato and regular fries and what I order depends on how they are made at the restaurant I am at.

We have a farmers market but I rarely go. It’s sad but it is mostly accuppied by the local hooterites (sp?) and every stand offers pretty much the same exact veggies for the same high prices. I don’t think they are willing to compete with each other.

Random: I have played at the splash pad at Seattle’s Space Needle a couple of times. (yes just grown up me with my husband looking on… He thinks I’m weird but takes pictures anyway). Brook should play there. It is iconic.

Sorry, my auto-correct stole Brooke’s “e”

trails – the scenery makes it so much more enjoyable!

That burger looks so good, esp the bun!!

I wish I could say trails, but after hurting my ankle pretty bad towards the end of my last trail run, I have stayed away. I hope to build better ankle strength so they can take the beating from the trails! :)

Sweet potato fries all day. I need some sort of dipping sauce with them, though.

Reply

I have a booth at the Farmer’s Market in Vernal, and they have a lot of great stuff. Food and other handmade stuff, super cool! I have actually never done trail running, but whenever you talk about it I really want to go! I have only ever had sweet potato fries at home, but I really want to try them from a restaurant. Yours look so good!

Janae, I just ran my first race this morning!!! I did my 5k an hour ago, it was so hard and really hot but I finished! Thanks for all the inspiration :)

I live in an area that is experiencing a lot of growth, so I prefer to run on the roads and through the neighborhoods to observe the construction and beautiful new homes. Sweet potato fries > regular fries. There is a farmer’s market 4 blocks from my house weekly and I have never gone!?! I’ll change that this week!

Reply

sweet potato fries are DEF better than regular fries! also I steal food from my nieces ALL THE TIME. They get such delicious foods (mac n cheese, for example) that I can’t stop grabbing bites!

Reply

Trails for sure! Sweet potato for sure!!

Trail runs are THE best! But I kinda get scared if I go by myself. I also probably watch too many of those Dateline, 20/20 type shows where people go missing. I do live in Vegas, and finding a dead body is always on my mind on the trails. I know that’s so cliche…. but I just can’t help myself of thinking it!! :)

Reply

I love trails but will not do them on the summer. There are just a few snakes, scorpions and other dangerous wildlife in the desert.

Reply

Sweet potato fries!
I have a farmers market by my office two days a week. I mostly buy fruit.
My dad grows lots of veggies in his garden so I get those for free:)
I like a flat loose dirt or loose gravel path. Trails with too many bumps and tree roots etc make me nervous about injury because I am pretty clumsy.

Just wanted to share I ran my first triathalon today. It was also the first time I ever swam in the ocean. 40 is the year to push through my fears :)

Reply

Honestly, I’m a road runner 100%… I Iran part of my run on the road and the other part on trails today and I was flying on the roads! Dying on the trails:( my pace literally changed significantly!

Sweet potato fries with raspberry dipping sauce is da bomb dot com

Definitely sweet potato fries:) I like trails but I’m better on roads. I love trains what fun to go to SLC. I love your blog it’s the only one I follow:)

I’m sorry. But once I saw those Sweet Potato Fries, I forgot what the rest of the post was about…. Could you repeat it back to me?

I love the farmer’s market! We’ve been going every weekend and buying carrots, beets, kale, zucchini, and smoked fish. I love this time of year!

Brooke’s water picture. So freakin’ cute. What a love.

I don’t even like peaches and I like peaches this year. So incredible.

Trains are my favorite and I would travel that way all the time if I could. Love them.

Reply

Love trails! Nothing like running a long run through a beautiful trail and getting your mind off of everything. Come visit Brooklyn NY and run through Prospect Park. I love discovering new parts of the park.

Sweet potato fries are far superior to traditional fries! They are a weekly side dish in the winter time when I dont mind running my oven.

Living in NYC, there is a farmers market on almost every corner. I love thr fresh produce and dont mind shelling out the extra cash for it =)

Reply

I do most of my miles on trails, but yesterday I ran a steeper section of the BST with a friend and I thought my legs were going to die by the end of eight miles.

Sweet potato fries ftw — I make them on the grill in the summer. Perfect.

Yesterday the kiddo and I bought tacos at the farmers’ market. Everything looked great but my own garden has just taken off!

Reply

I tried my first trail run this week and it kicked my butt! I found it to be such a great workout! I will definitely have to get out there more! Sweet potato fries are the best. Hands down. Oh and I think the farmer’s market in my town is the largest in western Canada, so it is awesome! I love going and I will buy as much fresh produce as I can :)

Reply

I prefer trails. I wish I got to run them more often.

Sweet potato fries all the way. A local place makes round ones, not like chips but kinda in between, called sun spots. Served with jelly. Amazing.

We have co-ops and farmers here, there’s a market on Saturdays downtown. Good fruits and veggies – squash and blueberries – and a couple of bread vendors, too. It always smells so good.

Reply

Trails for sure! I just did 13.13 miles on some trails this morning. It was weird to run the half distance without it being a race!

Sweet potato fries. No contest. Better if there’s bbq sauce to dip them in!

I actually can’t remember the last time I went to a farmer’s market, which is terrible because there’s one less than a mile away from my house.

Sweet potato fries, all day, every day!

Just getting OUT is the best. But lately it’s been all about hiking trails. Before my surgery I preferred training on trails but racing on roads. And peaches are the best part of summer :) We have some amazing Farmers Markets around here but they are so crowded that I haven’t been able to wrap my brain around going. Someday…

Reply

I run road & trail. We live so close, we should meet and go! I have run on the same trail as your pic above.

I <3 sweet potatoe fries ;-)

And yeah, we have the farmers market here in Spanish Fork. Love the orange county honey and the bread truck.

TRAILS!!!

And regular fries :)

For me, the summer is all about doing a lot more trail runs. I always PR after the summer with my trail running fitness :)

My Saturday was complete with a GORGEOUS 65 degree 7 mile run and some time a tthe local farmer’s market afterwards. This weather is CRAZY and I’m loving every single second of it!

Also your sweet potato pic inspired my dinner this week, they are my favorite!

Reply

I love the trails! We have a great trail system here and I have been making sure to go once a week before I move from my hometown to NY. I’m really going to miss them, but I’m also looking forward to moving where it is flat!

Reply

I love sweet potatoes but sometimes those regular fries are just SO GOOD

Reply

1. trails, always! I’m convinced that running on roads next to cars makes you feel like you’re going slower. If I feel like I’m going fast, I feel better about myself and my run, and happier!
2. Sweet potato fries. no question.
3. Blueberries and apricots are SO much better when purchased from a Farmer’s market, in my opinion! love em.

Reply

I LOVE running on trails!! I really miss all the awesome trails in California!

Also, that burger and fries look amazing! :)

Reply

Oh man do I love trails. And sweet potato fries! Although regular will do the trick too ;)

I love going to the Farmer’s market every Saturday to get my food for the week (and fresh cheap flowers for some self-care).

PS: I felt like I had a HRG-approved day. I spent it in my workout clothes and devoured a tupperware of cut-up watermelon. ;)

Reply

Brooke is getting so tall! I love trails and never worry about pace on them :) Stress free running.

Reply

I think we all know the obvious choice would be sweet potato fries! Especially those ones that come with the cinnamon sugar on them, or honey butter melted on top (we have a restaurant here that does that and they are AMAZING!).

I usually do road running because I live close to downtown, but trail running is so much more fun!! And we have some pretty awesome trails in the nearby Pisgah Forest, as well as other surrounding forest areas.

I’m not even sure how many farmers’ markets we have because there are SO many! But, I usually hit up the two that are within walking distance to my house. I get as mush fresh produce as I can!

Reply

we share everything..normally I end up with much less than I expect…but it is ok, because V tries new things

Sweet potato fries!

Is there such a thing as a park runner? I love the idea of trails because they are so pretty and picturesque but I feel like I would take a tumble down one. I really want to give them a try though!

AND SWEET POTATOOO!! But sometimes I get a craving for just your regular homemade crispy fries. So good!

The farmer’s market by my house is pretty great. This week I got peaches and made a peach crumble with custard, corn, tomatoes and fingerling potatoes. Fingerlings might just be my fav potato!

Reply

Sweet potato fries all the way!!!

Reply

Great weekend and photos! I prefer a mixture of trails and roads. I like to mix it up a little bit. :) I LOVE sweet potato fries. I always buy tomatoes and honey from our farmer’s market.

Reply

Road running for sure. And sweet potato fries! I love it when places offer than option.

Reply

Looks like a great day out! I love taking trains too, so nice to enjoy the scenery and not worry about traffic/driving!

Reply

I need that burger in my life!

Reply

your hair looks amazing!

Reply

Love the trails! And always, sweet potato fries!

So glad you’re able to get out again.

We’ve taken two family vacations on the train (sleeper cars & everything)! It’s so much fun.

Reply

I love sweet potato anything but if I can, I get a mixture of sweet and regular fries – the sweet potato soaks up a lot more oil so the regular fries balance it out.
