2nd half of the birthday festivities and 8 random pictures.

Brooke’s second birthday was a success.

IMG 6597

I was super fancy in the kitchen yesterday and I made some funfetti (you have to admit, funfetti is the best flavor of boxed cake mixes) cupcakes for Brooke.  I made sure to save the extra frosting for the next time I have graham crackers.  Graham crackers + frosting = amazing.

IMG 6601

I asked Brooke what she wanted for dinner and surprise, surprise—>  she wanted chicken nuggets, roasted broccoli (I have never seen a child love broccoli more than Brooke does) and chips and salsa.

IMG 6603

We are having a big family party today for Brooke so yesterday it was just me and the Brookers (except my mom and dad came over for cupcakes:)  Yesterday couldn’t have been more perfect.  I think I need to start celebrating her quarterly birthdays too.

I think she liked her presents.

Now for my 8 random pictures:

1.  My motivation to hit the treadmill this morning for a little bit of a speed workout.  A new pair of shoes make me even more excited to run.  PS I keep my prettiest shoes for the treadmill so that they stay clean for as long as possible before I take them outside to run.

IMG 6606

2.  Cait, I like the way you think.

Donutday

3.  I saw chatbooks on my friend’s instagram and I fell in love.  They turn your instagram photos into a book.  Just ordered my first two books.

4.  Someday we will have a table.  Okay, I am really wishing we had a table right now but I have been way too picky with tables and so I am making my sister go with me today to help me make a final decision (I did get one a few days ago but then I changed my mind.. that is how picky I am being for some weird reason).

IMG 6483

5.  These workout capris.  I am tempted to steal them from Jess.

IMG 6392

6.  The guy next to me at Costco had an entire flatbed of cheesecakes.  This was during my ‘no desserts for 21 days’ thing and I couldn’t stop thinking about cheesecake for the rest of the day after seeing these.

IMG 6098

7.  Megan and I are now neighbors.  Best news ever.

Megan is the one that got me to sign up for my first marathon.  I blame her for my racing addiction.

(Picture of us that was on my blog over 3 years ago..  Okay, it is getting weird how long I have been blogging for now)

NewImage

8.  I did finally decide on my bedding and it should be here any day now.  Lots of white with these fun pillows that my mom and I picked out (the pillows are kind of messy because we were in a hurry but you get the idea:)

Happy late birthday Brooke! My daughter is in love with tomatoes. She eats them like apples. They make such cute running pants now a days. I can’t wait toexpand my running wardrobe.

Happy Birthday again to Brooke! My daughter just had her family party (turned 7) on Sat and picked out an oreo ice cream cake. Girl knows how to part apparently :)

My 3 year old son is currently ADDICTED to honey rice puffins. He wants them constantly and although they’re pretty healthy and gluten free, enough is seriously enough! Also they’re all obsessed with watermelon and grapes as usual.

As a mom of 3 I always appreciate posts about balancing running and being a mom, and how it all fits together for different people so would love to read more of that :)

It looks like such a fun day! Happy birthday Brooke and let the celebrations continue!

My kiddo is in a stage where she doesn’t eat a whole lot…I need Brooke to teach her the greatness of brocolli! :)

Reply

She is SO excited about that dollhouse! I DO love funfetti, but I almost always request chocolate chocolate and more chocolate. Keepin’ it simple and delicious.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, you were actually the reason I signed up for my first half marathon!

I’d love a post on: favorite every-day shopping places or current fave articles of clothes, blogging tips, and/or a house tour! Love the bedding!

I always ask for Chocolate cake!!! IS there any other kind of cake? The more icing the better.

My dad got me to sign up to my first race: the City2Surf in Sydney. He used to run it as a young ‘un, and we ran it together during it’s 35th year. He also just ran it two weekends ago, and got under 100 mins – go Dad!

I’m interested to learn what specific drills/stretches/cross training has really helped your stamina/speed. Like if you had a top three things that every runner NEEDS to do. And also how you judge personal limits – when do you actually know you’re giving 100% to your fartleks for example? So…. nothing too complicated for me ;)

Glad you had a great day yesterday.

Reply

That flatbed of cheesecakes is unbelievable! I would love to have known where he was going…and go, too! :) Can’t wait to see more birthday extravaganza pics!!

Reply

wait wait wait. There is something I don’t understand in your first paragraph of this post. You had “extra frosting?” This does not compute.

Reply

give brooke lots of hugs for us!!!

Reply

I signed myself up for my first race as a goal. I forced my friend to sign up though!
For my birthday, I had a chocolate cake with vanilla icing. My husband also threw in some strawberries with the icing, but I wasn’t a fan. Almost made it feel healthy. I’m heading to Arizona this week and I will be making funfetti cupcakes. We don’t have funfetti where I live in Canada.

Reply

I’m in Canada too. I thought Rainbow Bit was the same as Funfetti. No??

Reply

We don’t have the icing like that. At least I haven’t found it.

Reply

I love all cakes. I do not discriminate. But it is has to be cold…like sitting overnight in the fridge so the cake part gets all fudgy. Weird, I know.

Reply

The table is really important. It is where all of your meals are had, which means it absolutely has to be perfect!!

I randomly decided I wanted to run a 5K and halfway through training I signed up for one to push me to the end of training. Once I crossed that finish line I was hooked and decided “I’m going to run a half marathon!” and after I crossed the finish line at the half I decided. “I’m going to run a marathon!” That finish line really does something to ya! :)

Reply

Couple questions, have you ever been stopped in public? And how fast would you like to run your next marathon?

Reply

Chocolate fudge cake. The richer the fudge, the better! How funny – my next door neighbor/one of my best friends/we are Kate and Allie is named Meaghan too lol. We are the same age, both divorced moms and our kids are a year apart. It’s the best. My son is loving greek yogurt with oatmeal lately. Warms my heart.

Reply

My husband’s favorite kind of cake is Funfetti so I made it for him for his birthday right when we started dating, I think it sealed the deal for him… My friend got me to sign up for my first 5K in 2005 and I remember it being really fun. I took way too many years off and gained a bunch of weight, so I signed up for a 10K in 2012, lost the weight I’d gained, and have been addicted ever since! Happy birthday to Brooke :)

Reply

My daughter is a picky eater and didn’t really start eating solids until about 18 months. It was rough! She’ll eat broccoli, asparagus, and baby carrots. I’ll take it for now!

Post requests: safety while trail running (since I’ll be doing a lot more of it after we move), thoughts on stroller running (it’s been getting tougher for me now that my 3yo doesn’t nap). Thanks!

Reply

Funfetti is the BEST! When I was Brooke’s age I was obsessed with Funfetti cake with pink icing. So girly, and sooo good!

My first race was a long time ago, it was a 10k that my mom made me sign up for, promising that we could walk the whole way. A mile in, I decided I wanted to run. I ran the rest of the way, and never walked a race again! Little did I know that was just the beginning of a very long love affair with running.

I love the Instagram books! Do you know if you can do them off of someone else’s account for a gift or only your own account?

Happy Birthday to Brooke!

Reply

Chatbooks look real cool. I can use them on my long walks and listen in :)

Reply

Where is the bedding from? I love it.

Looks like Brooke had a great 2nd birthday with mom!

Reply

You lost me at a flatbed of cheesecakes…..

Reply

funfetti really is the best. i haven’t had graham crackers and icing in years!

Reply

Looks like Brooke had a fantastic day yesterday! Look at that happy face with her new presents. I have the same Glycerins! I love them and I get so many compliments on them. They’re so pretty that I don’t run in them much, either…just wear them to work at the running store, mostly. I’d love to read about any tips you’d have about blogging since you and your blog are totally Internet famous. :)

Reply

Have you checked out Arhaus for tables? They have gorgeous ones! They run lots of sales for 30-40% off too.

Reply

Just give me some good old fashioned yellow cake mix from a box. Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. I don’t even need icing. :)

My friend Lisa got me into running back in 2005 and she encouraged me to try a race in 2006. It was a short one. 4 miles. I was hooked.
I still have the shirt from that race. It is very special.
Who knew I would end up running full marathons.

Reply

Those cupcakes are adorable! I don’t really have a favorite, but I did just make a homemade white cake with white frosting for my husband’s birthday and it was really good! Lately my son’s favorite food is frozen fruit/veg smoothies :) It’s the only way I get him to eat veggies… :s

I signed up for my first marathon to raise money for a friend with Leukemia. He has since passed away but I do believe it encouraged him to see so many friends and family gathering together to help him!

Reply

Favorite type of cake = yellow cake with chocolate frosting for sureee. Although if you asked my boyfriend he’d probably say something along the lines of mocha with chocolate. Idk, boys are weird.

Oh and it took me 3 months of living in my house before I picked out a dining room table. Part of it was me being picky and the other part was probably me really liking eating dinner on the couch in front of the tv.

Reply

Max likes Pizza, cucumber, tomatoes (he eats a whole one by himself), oranges, cookies, apples and ham.

My friends at work were all signing up for races – so I did too. :-)

Reply

Girlie is all about chicken nuggets, mac n cheese, and pineapple right now. Oh, and dessert, but isn’t that all kids?

I signed up for my first race as a way to motivate myself to lose weight after my daughter was born. I raised money for cancer research so knew I would HAVE to train and finish.

Reply

I love love love red velvet cake on my bday! Funfetti is good, too! :)

Reply

Love the new bedding. It’s very similar to what I have in my room. I’m obsessed with the yellow/gray color combo right now.

Reply

I like to celebrate half birthdays, but your idea of quarter birthdays is even better!! Looks like Brooke is having lots of fun celebrating! I normal want chocolate cake, but I will eat pretty much any kind. :) My son has been loving fruit lately. For dinner he ate 2 GoGo Squeez pouches, a handful of blueberries and a whole frozen banana! He didn’t want anything to do with his chicken, but maybe if it’s in the shape of Mickey he’d love it!

Reply

Happy Birthday, Brookers!!

Cake is just okay, I much prefer ice cream or froyo.

My BFF, Katie, got me interested in running and signing up for my first race.

Fav food lately have been strawberries, chicken pot pie, brussel sprouts (crazy kids!)

I would love to know more about pre-race fuel, like the whole week before, speed work, and race day fuel :)

Reply

I like red velvet cake or vanilla with sprinkles! I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t like cake?!? ;)

My son is loving corn on the cob these days!

I can’t remember who signed me up for my first race but my new mom friend Nicole and I convinced each other to do a half marathon!!

Reply

I like apple crumble!

Reply

Funfetti cake is the best. Something about all the pretty colors in cake just makes it so much better. I’m glad I’m not the only one who does the frosting and graham crackers thing. So addicting. I can’t keep them in the house!

When I graduated high school I set a goal to run a full marathon. I did it after 3 years. My dad always wanted to run one and ran with us growing up until he hurt his knee, so I guess you could say that he was my inspiration to run one! When I did my first I had NO idea what I was doing, and now all my friends are runners and most have run marathons. Crazy how it changes your life!

Reply

I am so excited for you and your decorating! A few years ago you never would have guessed you’d be where you are in life now…or with a place that is EXACTLY the way you want it. You deserve it. BE PICKY!

Love this comment! Thanks so much Monica!

My favorite cake is strawberry poke cake with whipped cream cheese frosting. The frosting has to be really light, or I can’t stand it.
My daughter loves eating good grape tomatoes, peas, and raspberries right out of our garden. I really have to watch her or she just goes and helps herself—ripe or not.
My dad and step mom got me to sign up for my first race (5k). Although I resisted for years, I was hooked after I crossed the finish line!

Reply

I don’t have a regular cake that I request. My mom used to always get my dairy queen cakes, but now I would probably rather have just a white cake?

my sister was my inspiration to sign up for my first race.

Reply

That is too cute that Brooke loves broccoli and awesome that she is getting good vitamins from them too! I’m in love with those shoes. You know you’re a runner when you’re more interested in buying running shoes than real ones.

Reply

Love that bedding!!! And I’m the same way with that kind of stuff, I either fall in love with something right away, or I’m just not sure and very wishy washy haha. And I can’t believe that Brooke is 2 already!! God time flies!

Reply

I don’t get people who say they don’t want cake on their birthday…it’s a total necessity! I love ice cream cake the most…especially the kind with a brownie crust. Happy belated birthday to Brooke! I hope you guys have the best time celebrating tonight! <3

Hey Janae,

I really like your blog, but sometimes I surprise myself with how much I know about your daughter just from reading here a few times a week.
I know her full name, birthday, essentially where she lives, what she’s looked like since birth and how your pregnancy went, the full names of her parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles and could find their addresses in seconds if I wanted, what she likes, doesn’t like, and often – where she is or at least places she frequents. I can easily access hundreds if not thousands of photos of her at all ages and doing all different activities, and those photos will be on the Internet forever. Probably most people who comment here know all this information too, even just from casually reading here.

Do you ever worry about how much exposure Brooke gets on your blog and Instagram? What if she gets older and decides she doesn’t want those photos online?

Reply

Great questions! I decided that if Brooke was going to be on the blog a lot I would take extra precautions because of it. That means the only people that EVER have Brooke are ME, her dad or my family/his parents. I take extra precautions (that I do not mention on the blog… for safety reasons:) to ensure that we are both protected. I do put a lot on the blog but there is SOOOO much more that I do not put on the blog… things that keep me up late at night thinking about to make sure that Brooke and I are both safe. If she doesn’t want the photos online… I will take them down in a heart beat! THANK YOU!

Reply

Hi Janae,

First off, thank you for responding, and nicely at that.

I think anyone who spends more than five seconds on here can tell how much you love Brooke and work to make sure she’s happy and safe, so I’m glad but not too surprised to hear about the extra safety measures you take. (Though how would the ‘nobody but family’ rule work when she’s ready for school?)

Regarding the photos, I trust that you would respect her wishes if she didn’t want so many pictures up and take down everything that you could. However, my point was that you won’t be able to take down all photos of Brooke. Things on the internet are forever, especially since they can get copied elsewhere and because of sites like the wayback machine.

Reply

Where did you get the bedding/pillows? I love it!!

I LOVE cake and sweets. I did a 30 day with no sweets “reset” when I felt like I was getting out of control but its so easy to slip back in! My cake of choice would probably be chocolate OR an ice cream cake – SO good!

Enjoy the rest of your birthday celebrations for Brooke!!

Reply

THANK YOU!!! They are from Crate & Barrel!

Reply

I have glycerin 11 and love them! Are the 12s different?

Happy birthday Brooke!

Reply

My bday cake has to be chocolate….or lemon works too!

My first real race was a half marathon and I’ve never looked back! Racing gives me motivation to get out the door and train, otherwise I am more likely to hit the snooze button a few too many times!

My almost three year old is infatuated with flags, so right now his favorite book is a book about flags. (He’s a strange one! Lol). My 7 yr old is into princesses so any chapter books with princesses, mermaids, fairies, etc….you get the picture!

Have another great birthday party with Brooke!

Reply

I’m a red velvet cake girl all the way for all occasions!

I’ve been a runner forever but my friend arrive made me sign up for my first post baby race… She’s another awesome mother runner

Brady and Ella are on a fresh fruit and veggie kick… Lots of cucumbers, corn, green berms and watermelon…

Ps I love your new kicks!!!

Reply

Funfetti is by far the best boxed cake mix! I love your plan to keep a little extra for dipping graham crackers. Or you know, just eat it by the spoonful. ;) I’m so happy to hear you and Brooke had a great day together. You are a wonderful mama!

Love your pillows and bedding!! So glad to hear you’re loving your new place. I’ve been SO indecisive/picky about stuff in our new house too. I think I returned about 4 different lamps before I finally decided on one. Ha!

Reply

My 1.5 year old is JUST getting better about eating (finally!) His favorite foods are bananas, grapes, chicken, and cinnamon toast crunch (I know I know)! I’m always trying to figure out what he will branch out to!

Reply

I love to bake cake from scratch for other people to enjoy. But I don’t really like to eat cake. Weird, huh?

Reply

How do you do your roasted broccoli? It looks delish!

Reply

And now I’m craving cupcakes and cheesecake! I would love to read a post about your current fave running clothes and also a post about race day strategy (breakfast, fueling / hydrating during the race, pace strategy).

Reply

Looks like Brooke had a great birthday.

I usually like vanilla birthday cakes with french vanilla frosting. I know it’s kind of boring, but it’s my favorite.

Reply

I never ask for cake on my birthday. It’s not my favorite. I would rather have ice cream, but you are right in that funfetti is definitely the best!

So funny that Brooke loves broccoli so much, seeing as how you HATED the stuff when you were pregnant. Roasted broccoli is the bomb dot com though, so I don’t blame her ;)

I want to go wherever that cheesecake man is going cause it has to be great.

Reply

I love funfetti!! It is delicious and fun! :) I would say it is my favorite and regular wedding cake too.

My friend wanted to do a race called the Groundhog run so I did it with her. It was just a 5k, but I was hooked.

Reply

I’m not a fan of cake. Butttt. I do love me some ice cream cake. Yumm. I always ask for that on my birthday. Too bad my birthday already passed and I didn’t get any :/ :/

Oh andd. I’m a momma. Her favorite food is still moms breast milk. (Hoping to stop soon) lol. She’s 18 months.

You should talk about some of your running goals. What races you want to do in the future, what times you would like to achieve.

:)

Reply

I’d love to learn more about your warm-ups/rolling/stretching and nutritional regime! Totally back to the basics of running but, I think that all the above are VITAL in order to be a healthy runner.

I really get a kick out of reading your blog, on a daily basis! Thank you so much for sharing, Janae.

I do wear them still but I have been wearing more supportive shoes lately! I will do a full review on them once I get some more use out of them! Thanks!

Awwww she definitely loves her presents!! Too cute :)

Have a fun family bday party!

Shopping for bedding I always just want to hop right in.

Do Swedish fish still hold a special place in your heart? Do they have a replacement? If so what?

I always ask for chocolate angel food cake :)

I would love to hear about your future racing plans and what you are looking towards in your running/exercising!

Reply

Shoe question!! Which do you like more: the Transcend or Glycerin 12? I’m looking for a great cushion for longer mileage…. I have always worn the PureFlows for 2+ years now and love them but feel like I could use some added support. Thanks, Janae! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BROOKE!!!

Reply

Glycerin 12 so far! I am in love after just a few runs in them! Go to a running shoe store and try them both out though and see what you like!

Reply

Brooke is adorable and I cannot believe she is 2 – I started reading when she was about 6 months! My twin and I loved broccoli when we were little, but Sarah ate the stems and I ate the tops :)
Would you be willing to review the Glycerins once you’ve worn them enough? I’m on the hunt for a new pair of Brooks shoes and I’m not sure at all what pair to look for! (I have the Pure Cadence 2’s right now)

Reply

I second that request! :)

YES YES YES!!!

Oh the look on her face is priceless she loves her gifts!..I am SO going on Instagram now and creating an account! That is genius…we have so many pics of the kiddos it just makes sense.
I love picking out furniture but it’s true u need a second opinion. Love all your decor. Making me want to change out my pillows and redecorate.
I need to do some serious speed work. My boys go back to school soon. Early morning runs are on the horizon….my racing buddy lives far away we did our first 5k over 2 years ago. I wish I had a running buddy.

Wow, Chatbooks seems pretty cool! I don’t have just ONE favorite cake but I do love cheesecake, red velvet, and anything with coconut!

Happy Birthday to Brooke! What a fun celebration. Funfetti is the best. I’m tempted to try and make my own.

I don’t think anyone influenced me to sign up for my first race- I just got the idea in my head and went for it! My first race was a half marathon and I did it by myself. I was definitely hooked after that first time!

I love funfetti batter! As far as baked cake, I love chocolate.

My 8 year old son is a pancake eating beast! He would eat pancakes for every meal if I let him. He shld seriously enter a pancake eating contest!

Happy Birthday to Brooke, she looks so HAPPY with her presents. Two is such a fantastic age :)

My kids are older so one daughter (17) is going thru a vegan phase, another daughter (almost 14) has been vegetarian for 6 years – since I brought home baby chicks to raise, and a week later made her favorite parmesan chicken for dinner. She started to cry and said I’m not eating this anymore! And my son (11) is a big carnivore. Trying to figure out what everyone wants for dinner is crazy !

I’d love to see fashion, and the new house stuff – and always the running.

Have such a fabulous day with your family!

Reply

Brooke looks so happy! Love that!

Go ahead and be picky with your kitchen table. After all, the kitchen table is the center of the home–truly. I mean, you EAT on it. That makes it kind of a big deal.

My neighbor got me sign up for my first race 14 years ago. We are still friends today despite a total of 10 separate moves between the two of us.

Reply

My hear belongs to carrot cake. My friend Meaghan asked me to run a 10 mile race with her and I said sure. I had never ran more that 6 miles prior to race day. I was the fastest in our group though and was like hey maybe I like this…

Actually… I run in Saucony Kinvaras and they have a 4mm drop, which is the same drop as the Brooks Pure line. I also have the Brooks Glycerin, which is an 8mm drop. I have noticed lately that when I try to use my Glycerins my arches get a little nutty. Do you ever have any issues with the drop in your shoes? I have noticed that they have you in neutral and support (Ravenna) shoes that vary in drop also. How do you feet differ in each?!

Reply

Happy belated birthday to Brooke! Isn’t it crazy fun to celebrate a kid’s birthday?!

I loooove me some chocolate cake with peanut butter icing for my birthday. A very close second would be an ice cream cake from DQ!

My husband has been running for a few years and has done a few marathons, so last fall I told him I would run a half marathon with him for our 10th wedding anniversary in April. We ran it together and it was great! I’m now signed up for my second half.

My 8 year old is loving the summer fruit – strawberries & plums at the top of the list lately. My 4 year old is uber picky and his fave has been plain spaghetti with parmesan cheese.

And…………..THOSE SHOES! Is it possible to drool over shoes? I have runner shoe envy.

Reply

Shoe porn. Love those!
Carrot cake hands down. I cannot resist a good one with walnuts, fresh carrots and cream cheese frosting. I ask for it every year on my birthday!

My almost 3 year old and 5 year old have been really into raspberries, blueberries and plums! We have great fruit right now in Fresno. The 7 year old is the pickiest eater alive! She does love steak, so I usually grill her up one a few times a week!

Reply

Janae, love the bedding! Where is it from? Brooke is adorable!

Reply

Thank you so much! It is from Crate & Barrel!

I do the same thing with new shoes…keep them pretty for as long as possible. Eventually they become my rainy day shoes before being retired.

Um…what is someone doing with that many cheesecakes?

I love cheesecake.

Do you know where your friend Jess got those capris?! Love them!

Reply

She got them from Marshall’s about 6 months ago!

Aw, man! I was hoping you would say somewhere I could likely find them! They’re still super cute!

Reply

Fav cake…oreo ice cream cake
I used to call her yoda, now it’s coach lAZy…got me to do the WHM on (absolutely) no training.
I know we see your sister running…did or do your parents or other siblings run? like competitively, like even trying to BQ (like you)?

Reply

I signed up for my first race because my mom had just been diagnosed with cancer and I wanted to do it for her! It was a wonderful race!

Reply

I am not a fan of cake, so I always ask for brownies on my birthday. So delicious!

My 2 year old has been a picky eater for the last year or so. Lately, he’s finally coming around to eating what I give him instead of just saying no all the time. His favorites are watermelon, chicken nuggets, and bananas.

Oh, and chocolate. We were picking out some individual desserts and instead of picking out a frosted sugar cookie, he went for a chocolate chunk cookie. Boy after my own heart. :)

I am in the process of finding new bedding and that would go perfect in my room! Where did you get it??
