The cure for anything and how I celebrated!

Brooke has the two best grandmas in the world and she is lucky enough to spend a few days with her grandma in Southern California while we are here.

She also gets time with CHARLIE (if you are a long time reader then you remember my many adventures with Charlie).

My morning started with this masterpiece from the Broken Yolk in Carlsbad.  I had half of this and half of an omelet, the perfect combination.  I can never decide between sweet and egg dishes at diners so if someone is willing to split with me then I am quite happy.

IMG 5193

The workout for the day was soccer at the park using our shoes as goal posts.  Note to self—>  running around barefoot feels really good, I should do that more often.

IMG 5201

A few people recommended champagne to celebrate my divorce finalizing but since i don’t drink… I decided that Diet Coke would be the best way to celebrate.  I will pay a lot of money to anyone that can find a diet coke with my name on it (Janae).  A lot.

IMG 5205

Beach towns by definition means that they are going to be adorable and offer delicious food.

IMG 5244

Crust—> red sauce—> cheese—> pesto—> chicken from Manhattan Pizza.  Always a good sign when the pizza doesn’t come close to fitting on a plate.

IMG 5211

Followed by some time on the beach before the sun went down.

IMG 5222

Every time I go to the beach I am reminded of an extremely true quote:

“The cure for anything is salt water- tears, sweat or the sea.”  -Isak Dinesen

Congratulations, Janae! The next chapter begins now :) Enjoy California and enjoy being a free woman!

PS – I’ve also heard that the cure for anything is a giant ice cream sundae… I’ve also heard that is a great way to celebrate… ;)

Reply

I think you are 100% right about that Laura!

Reply

Love that quote! It’s so true :) Hope you’re enjoying sunny CA!

Reply

If you stay around Encinitas, you should go to Kealani’s (Hawaiian food)for their teriyaki chicken, its out of this world! And VG’s donuts in Cardiff is absolutely amazing.

Reply

That sounds amazing! Thank you so much J! I hope you are having a great day!

You’re truly an inspiration- you prove that no matter what life deals you, it’s up to you whether you let it hurt you or help you. Love love LOVE this post!! Enjoy cali and the sun!! :)

Reply

I’m so glad you are having such a good trip! Your pictures are gorgeous and you are making me want to go to Cali so bad!

Reply

Since you had the diet coke, an apple fitter might need to be your next form of celebration.

Reply

You know me too well!

Reply

I love that quote! I find the best cure for inner hurts is a sweaty run on the beach followed by a good cry. So I guess all three at once.

Reply

I’m just so freakin’ happy for you. That is all.

Reply

Makes me homesick for California! Taking a long walk on the beach by myself instantly makes me feel better if I’m ever down.

Reply

looks like an awesome time! I am glad Brooke is able to spend time with her other grandma. I remember when she used to make you whatever food you wanted..I hope she still does that ;)

Reply

That pizza looks amazing!!

Reply

Great quote! I’m the same way about breakfast – I want it all! :) I have yet to find a Heather Coke bottle and I don’t even drink soda!

Reply

California looks amazing! And so does that pizza…. holy yum. I bet I won’t ever find my name on a diet coke! Good thing I don’t drink pop :)

Reply

Such a great quote! And I’d probably go with diet Coke over champagne too…I love that stuff.

Reply

I hope that your friends all had bottles of diet coke too to toast your news! CHEERS!

Reply

Isn’t Encinitas just the best!? I have family there, and it is my absolute favourite place to visit in the whole world!
If you’re still there tomorrow, you MUST make a breakfast run to Pipe’s Cafe in Cardiff. It is perfection.

Reply

I’ll keep my eye out for that Janae diet coke ;) I’ve actually been looking for one that says my name (Erin) on it, and I haven’t even been able to find one of those!

I am so unbelievably happy for you in the fact that you’re finally free. You’ve gone through so much this past year and your positive attitude never fails to inspire me =).

Reply

I saw an Erin bottle the other day! Erin is also my best friend’s name :)

Reply

Do you still have a good relationship with your in-laws? So happy for you!! Youre amazing

Reply

We do! They are incredible people and I miss them a lot!

Reply

I love that quote! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Reply

There is actually a piece on the website where you can check and see if your name is one printed on the coke bottles! Mine is not one of the “lucky” ones- guess we’re just unique! (This is why I’m obsessed with getting things monogrammed. I never see my name on anything!)

Diet coke cheers to new beginnings!

Reply

That quote by Isak Dineson is my absolute favorite. So true in every way.

Reply

So glad you are having a great time! I absolutely love your blog and am reading it while enjoying a Diet Coke of my own! :))

What would you recommend in regards to your post that you simply made a
few days ago? Any certain?

Reply

I will start looking for a D.C. with your name on it ;)

The first book in your trilogy ended and now you’re on book two! Here’s to many fabulous and exciting chapters in your books of life!

Reply

It’s beautiful there…and the pizza looks delicious!
Enjoy your Sunday!

Reply

So happy for you! Not sure if you can drink kombucha (fermented with a tiny bit of alcohol naturally occurring), but it is pretty tasty and has a nice fix to it. And plenty of flavors to choose from.

Reply

Fizz not fix

Reply

I’m glad you’re celebrating, this is definitely something to celebrate! Enjoy this moment!

Agreed. The sea does some amazing things for the soul.

Wow. Incredible! Thank you so much for sharing this with me!

My darling friend is also a Janae and she’s utterly disappointed that they don’t have a Janae! You rock Janae! Love reading your blog!

Reply

Sounds like an awesome day–especially the barefoot soccer!

Reply

haha love seeing the coke with “Ashley” on it- too funny :) Have so much fun at the beach!!

Reply

Love that quote, too! Best wishes to you and your baby!

Reply

I live in Carlsbad!! Where are you staying? You must get a california burrito at Mexico Viejo and an acai bowl at Swamis.

Reply

Even better go to Mozy’s for the best acai and pitaya bowls!!

Reply

ha, i was right! how funny! and yay!

Reply

Yay for not drinking, Janae. I don’t either and it is SOOOO worth it.

Reply

oh my gosh I love encinitas!! we used to vacation there every summer, have so much fun!!!

You once again amaze and inspire. Best of wishes moving forward!

I love that quote- it’s so true! Glad you got to celebrate with some diet coke! Have an amazing time- the pics look beautiful!

Reply

So happy for you, Janae. You deserve pure joy :) Also, that quote couldn’t be more true. LOVE it!

xo

Reply

I would give anyone a million bcuks if they could find it with my name. Although my name is Hawaiian so maybe diet coke in Hawaii?

Reply

I haven’t found one with my name either-and I drink a lot of diet coke :)
I’m still close to my ex’s family too, not their fault their son was a jerk-hahaha.
Have fun in Cali!!

Reply

Only my boys will ever find a Coke (or any pre-made, not-customized item) with their name on it. My daughters, my husband and I have uncommon names.

I’m really glad Brooke got to see her paternal grandparents and that you still have that connection, too. And I’m especially glad you’re having a great time in San Diego :)

Reply

I LOVE that quote! It is so true!

Reply

I’m the same way whenever it comes to breakfast food! I can’t never just commit to a sweet dish. I don’t trust people who don’t like to share food :)

Reply

I really love that quote :)

Reply

Congratulations on your happy news! You’re in my city!! Make sure to hit up La Jolla Shores/ La Jolla Cove and eat at Brockton Villa for the best french toast every! Also, for good pizza hit up Regents Pizzeria and/or Pizza Port. If you want good sushi and have some moolah to spend go to Sushi Ota. Or if you want good sushi for cheap and like hanging out in little tiki hits with weiner dogs all over the walls go to Sushi Diner. Hope you have a wonderful time here :)

Reply

Oh, this most makes me miss SoCal so much!! We lived in Oceanside for 3 years and frequented Encinitas.

Reply

I didn’t know you didn’t drink! How cool! I definitely do, but I totally respect that you don’t, and I bet it’s nice to not have alcohol gunking up your system, especially as active as you are :)

Reply

YAAAY! You got your beach fix, sooo time to trash the hotel room now? :) I think that would be the first baby shower-less hotel room trashing.

I feel you with the Coke bottles. Yesterday, I found one that said “Angel,” so I figured it meant me anyway. I’m planning on drinking it today.

Reply

Woohoo! So much excitement for you! And thanks for sharing the quote – it’s perfect.

Reply

They only do certain names on the cokes. But, if you are lucky enough to find the traveling coke machine you can make your own! We are only 2 hours from Atlanta, GA (Coca Cola headquarters) so they did not mind coming to downtown Chattanooga and bringing the “share a coke” machine. It only does names and will not accept nicknames, but I was able to make one for me and the fiancé! Was going to put the wedding date but numbers were not an option. It is just a little sticker label that prints on the mini coke cans, but is still very cool!

Reply

Wow, I love that quote!! I hope the rest of your trip is great <3

Reply

Congratulations on the divorce being final! Diet coke is a great way for you to celebrate. You should continue your celebration with donuts! :) That pizza looks delicious and I am so jealous of your beach time. The midwest is lacking in the beach area. :)

Reply

You were hanging out where I do most of my long runs. :) I usually run from Solana Beach through Encinitas to Carlsbad then turn around. Not too shabby huh? :)

Reply

I always over order on breakfast because I can never decide between sweet or savory! The struggle is real! I’m glad you had someone to share with!

Enjoy your beach time!

Reply

So I’ve been a reader of yours for a while now, yet have never had the courage to leave you a comment. But.. today’s post really hit home (literally :D ) : I live in Encinitas, about 2 miles from where you had breakfast ;0

I don’t know if you’re spending much more time in this area, but if so you MUST go to VG’s for Donuts!!! Amazing, cheap, and the best in town!! They’re one street off the 101 in Cardiff (south of Encinitas)

Have a great rest of your trip in SD!!

Reply

Great Dinesen quote. Thanks for sharing it.

Reply

think you are doing really well. My fav quote is yours ‘I can do hard things’.
It looks like the weather was lovely although your goal was very small!

Reply

Of course, silly me, I should have said #DietCoke and not #Champagne!

Reply

Diet coke with people’s names on it!?!? I’d probably be more likely to find a Katie or Kathryn than a Janae… but you never know!!!! And that makes my heart so happy to see Brooke with Charlie!!!! I know she just loves dogs! As do I…

Reply

Fun! We are currently building a house in Encinitas, about a mile from Moonlight Beach, where you are! My brother is playing on the Ogden Raptors this summer and we are going to visit him in 2 weeks, so that means you and I will have both been near each others’ homes at almost the same time! So funny!

Reply

What a perfect day! I would love to go back to SD!!

Reply

I love San Diego, I’m glad you had a great time there too!

Reply

That is a great quote!! Hope your trip was fantastic!

Reply

Hey! Sooo, I’ve been away from the blogging world for a few weeks so now I’m doing some catching up. I love that quote though! You deserve that Diet Coke…I hope you enjoyed it!
