Tangent Tuesday.

Get ready for the weekly (okay, let’s be honest… daily) randomness from Janae.

-I have been running for 16 years and only about 1/9892 of my craziness has burned off so far.

IMG 3643

-New vacation tradition—>  stay at a hotel that is less than a tenth of a mile (I really did measure it) away from the best doughnut shop in the city.

IMG 3491

We kind of went a lot.

IMG 3665

I am still kicking myself that I didn’t get there early enough in the morning to be able to try this flavor.  I guess that just means Brooke and I need to get back to Seattle ASAP.

IMG 3487

-Speaking of our hotel, they had cupcake happy hour every single day.  Mini coconut muffins.  Stuff like this matters.  This alone turned me into a lifelong customer.

IMG 3558

-Splash pads.  Win-win for everyone involved.

IMG 3693

-Just getting a little reading done at dinner.

BROOKE,

STOP GROWING UP RIGHT THIS SECOND.

IMG 3695

-This picture reminded me that I have a permanent bottom retainer.  Anyone else have one of those?  At least I think it is permanent… or maybe my orthodontist just forgot to take it out.

IMG 3702

-You can never start the habit of foam rolling too young.

IMG 3675

-We leave for Kentucky tomorrow!  I had a Costco sized bag of Broccoli in the fridge and I refuse to let it go to waste (my mom HATES broccoli so she wouldn’t eat it, I know.. it is quite the tragedy) since we are leaving and so we have been eating it at every meal and snack.  Roasted>steamed

IMG 3691

-Yoga and 30 minutes of strength training.  And ZERO cardio.  Who am I?  (You can read about why I am taking a break from running HERE)

IMG 3711

-Me too.

IMG 3688

-My airport breakfast.  Bring an oatmeal packet, banana and pb and then ask for half a cup of hot water from a coffee shop and boom… you don’t have to spend $14 on an airport breakfast.

IMG 3674

Tell me a tangent or two!!!

Today is my FIRST day of training for my FIRST marathon! I just got 5 miles in… already so excited !!!!

Reply

Congrats!

I love when I’m training for a race. Each session feels especially amazing to cross off the calendar.

Reply

Ooh I like the “burn off the crazy” since I think I try to burn of my crazy all the time! Doesn’t work though just makes me love my crazy even more!

I need to do more strength (like get serious) because I know it will make me stronger for marathon fall but I am really stubborn about not running, and about switching up my comfy routine in any way. Once my kids are in camp though I might have to make a 2x week strength class a priority. I need motivation!

Reply

I run by a splash pad and alwaysssss want to take a detour through the midde of it! Brooke is so big…when did that happen?!

Reply

Kentucky sounds fun – it is supposed to be a beautiful state. I have never been, but I’ve been to many of the states that surround it. And I’m with your mom – I don’t really like broccoli either, but I eat it from time to time because I know it’s good for me.

And good for you for taking time off! I always take time off between races. I usually try and do a half in the spring and a half (or very rarely a full) in the fall but I always take 2-3 months off in between training because after a race I am burned out. And I’ve never really been injured minus shin splints every once in a while. Running can be really hard on our bodies and I want to still be able to walk/run when I am old – without needing him and knee replacements.

Random tangent: Tomorrow I have an orientation for nursing school, which I’m starting in the fall. I keep oscillating between excitement and panic. I am exciting to pursue something I’ve dreamed about for years but I’m panicking at the thought of quitting my amazing job and plunging my family into student poverty.

Yesterday I learned about how a tuning fork can detect stress fractures. And my math has gotten better since running. I can figure out paces to finish times during my run pretty quickly. Safe be da journey J. Stay fierce Stay blessed.

Ok, we NEED splash pads and cupcake happy hours around here. Actually, I have now gone 17 days without desserts/treats so thank you for that :) We got a membership to Costco the other day and it so reminded me of back in the good old blog days when you were obsessed! I finally got to try taboule and their mouthwatering peaches (not together).

Are you taking time off from all cardio or just running? I was wondering if you were going to revisit your hungry-ellipticalling-stairmill-spin-girl self :) I am a cardio junkie but sometimes I get burnt out too and Im like…this is silly! Exercise is supposed to be enjoyable so if Im not having fun I take a break :) I used to have trouble with that but Im ok with it now.

Reply

I love that picture of Brooke foamrolling! My little girl does the same thing – she also prefers rolling out her belly ;)!

Reply

I remember your oatmeal for bfast as a cheap airport meal! Thanks for the reminder as I will be in an airport soon and would rather spend $14 on something else! :)

Reply

Hotels I have visited have cookie happy hour, but cupcakes!?! YES! Someone in management knows cupcakes > cookies all day.

Reply

I had a “permanent” bottom retainer for like, 10 years, but then it fell out. I dunno if that was supposed to happen, but my orthodontist never replaced it!

Reply

That blueberry fritter thing looks AMAZING- I want one right now. I would take a cupcake happy hour any day!

Reply

That picture of Brooke on the foam roller is hilarious!

My tangent is that when I got to my hotel in Milwaukee last weekend, I realized that they allowed dogs and I didn’t even think to check. I was tempted to drive two hours back home and get my dog from my mom’s house. :)

Reply

That hashtag/pound sign thing is so true!!! We’re old :)

My tangent is that I thought I was a super tough hot weather runner, but last night there was still a “feels like” temp of 93 degrees at sunset when I went running and it broke me. After only 3.5 miles I had to stop and walk home! Grrrr!

Reply

Have a blast on your trip! I have a REALLY tough workout this morning which makes me nervous, but I am ready to make it happen!

Reply

Roasted broccoli with parmesan– my sister turned me on to it! No better way to eat broccoli! Also– I am making a massive amount of granola tonight. I made some for a friend when she has her baby (why must we always make dinners??!! I wish someone would’ve made me yummy breakfast foods!) and now all of her friends are asking for the recipe, so I’m making small batches to give away with the recipe card. Let’s just say: cinnamon + coconut oil + craisins + oats + almonds = DELICIOUSNESS!! Have a fun trip!

Reply

I’ve recently started HIIT training, and I’m starting to think it’s the key to get me into running. Doing HIIT on the treadmill makes me feel pretty badass, since I’m going at about 7.0 for 15 seconds (to start it jumps up after two weeks). I’m sore all over, but it’s the good sore. I should really get a foam roller.

Reply

I have a permanent retainer…and while it was supposed to be permanent they told me that it would just stay in until it broke. Well it broke like 4 years ago and then my teeth started shifting. I had to get really tight braces on 4 of my teeth for 2 days (it hurt so bad) and then they replaced the retainer. Now I know why they are so important!
I love broccoli cooked that way! Its one of my favorite foods (my family thinks I am so weird:))
And I am with you…I think I could run for 30 more years and still not burn off the crazy.

Reply

Brooke is so cute in these pictures! My tangent is that I had vietnamese tiger prawn curry for lunch and it was yummy!

Reply

I love when people call the hashtag a “number” sign or a “pound” sign. Old school!

Reply

Cupcake happy hour? That sounds like heaven!

I love your shorts in the first pic!! Where are those from?

Reply

Ha, love the pic of Brooke foam-rolling. ;) And yoga + strength training sounds like a great workout to me!

Hope you have a great trip!

Reply

Permanent retainer: yep, I raise my hand. Kind of want to ask for that for my son (age 12) because he will not keep his retainers in and I don’t want to have to do braces over again (no no no).

I have been running for 2+ years, just tried foam-rolling for the first time last week. Can’t decide if I like it or not – I think I need to YouTube some examples, I wasn’t overly impressed.

Doughnuts – the chocolate glazed in your hand are probably my second favorite next to the sour cream doughnut…mmmm

Reply

Tangent: Due to my weirdo food texture issues I only like broccoli if it’s roasted- and very roasted at that. I had the hardest time for years eating broccoli because the little flowery thingies would gag me. If those thingies are roasted enough to be crispy they don’t bother my throat. Roasted broccoli FTW!

Reply

Hi janae!! I’m glad to hear that you’re taking a break. We can’t go up without being down, and we wouldn’t notice the sunshine if it weren’t for the darkness. You go girl!
I love yoga and have been going religiously to a place near me. If reminds me to process things more maturely and stay grounded even when life throws is curveballs. I also have been enjoying the relaxing walk lately for sure! The beautiful weather and a podcast has been really nice

Reply

Oh, Top Donuts for the win! We ate there on our Honeymoon because our hotel (Hotel 5, awesome place!) was like barely half a block form it. So good!

Reply

Kentucky is so close to NJ…I guess relatively right? From where you started anyways.

Did you know there is a show on the cooking channel I believe, where they battle for 10,000 dollars by cooking the best donuts. If I were to tell you Tim and I were having a donut station at our wedding would you come?

Reply

I won’t run on trash day because it’s too stinky and the AZ heat just magnifies the smell. I have somehow stopped liking coffee. I usually drink a half cup and switch to green tea. I still like the smell in the morning of coffee.

Reply

Those doughnuts look so good! I would make a trip for that blueberry fritter one for sure.

Reply

Cupcake hour?! I need to go back to Seattle just to stay in that hotel!!

Reply

Blueberry fritter sounds delish.
Well I’m currently sitting on the bus headed to work with my gym bag and my lunch bag and my purse and am realizing I could have a back ache just trying to be healthy. Lol.

I am taking my niece and nephew to six flags great adventure on Thursday and am so excited to get on those roller coasters :)

My friends mom was just diagnosed with ALS and it has made me appreciate my mobility right now. Even though I still am battling ankle tendonitis I will recover. And she probably won’t. Ugh!

Reply

Agreed, Sally. I am taking a month (at least) off from running just to get my body back to where I am not always hurting/stiff/injured. I was sad and pouty about it and then I heard about the Olympic swimmer (from my home state) Amy Van Dyken who crashed on an ATV and now may never walk. Talk about putting things in perspective.

Reply

I totally had the permanent bottom retainer! Well, that is until a few years ago. I forget right now why we finally removed it but my dentist removed it. My teeth didn’t shift. I swear I had it for almost 20 years!

Reply

Cupcake happy hour needs to be an every day thing, everywhere. Random- I have eaten 3 pounds of grapes in the last 24 hours. They are so good I can’t stop! Safe travels to Kentucky!!

Reply

Loving the blueberry fritter, wish I had one right now! Could you post your strength training workout sometime? I am incorporating more into my routine but I’m not sure I am doing enough. Or maybe I am just used to workouts/runs taking 1.5 hours…Thanks!

Reply

Have a fabulous trip!

Tangent –> my brother and I just got back from running a half marathon together in Banff! He is three years younger than me and it was his second race (I’m attempting to get him hooked). We had a blast!

Reply

I think I have the same bag of broccoli and yes roasted is the best – especially when it gets all crispy!

Reply

Oh my god! That post about never burning off crazy! My friends all tell me the same thing!

[email protected]

Reply

Agreed on the pound sign. That took me forever to accept. So frustrating.

Also…a quiet lunch or dinner where you get to read a book? So lovely. One of my favorite things to do! Brooke is already so freaking smart! Mine didn’t listen and grew up. Darnit.

Reply

81 degrees and 94% humidity at 6:00 am in in the morning is just….so wrong! #FloridaRunnerProblems

tangent… Only 3.5 more work days until summer vaca and I can’t wait to spend time with the kiddos and training… you have even inspired me to get my butt in gear and start lifting… PR’s don’t just happen… well, sometimes…

and ps. I do remember when a hashtag was call a pound sign I actually called it a pound sign the other day and my students looked at me like I had 2 heads… #damnoldlady

have fun in kentucky!!!!! safe travels

Reply

Today is FINALLY the last day of school in SoCal. Woo hoo! Let summer begin.

Reply

I’ll help you burn off some crazy while you are here in KY!! Just text me! I’m dying for you to meet my baby and let our babes play!! Also, I can take you to some really great foodie places here! ;)

Reply

I am totally inviting myself, but I wanna go too!! ;)

Reply

I stayed at that same hotel and went to that doughnut shop last year. It is sooo good! I wish I had gotten to try that fritter flavor too. It looks delicious! I am going to Tahoe for the first time this week. I’m kinda excited about that. Anyone know of great places to run there? and I am moving to MA in a month for grad school. I’m kinda really excited about that too.

Reply

Those doughnuts look so good!!! I have yet to find a really good gf doughnut shop. We have a Costco size bag of broccoli that ended up in our freezer because I was the same way. I’ve been using it in soup and stir fries lately. Yumm!

Reply

Girl, I am totally with you on the “hate to waste food thing”. When we go on vacation our last meal is often just the most random things put together because I refuse to throw anything away.

Have fun in Kentucky! I have never been but hear it is beautiful.
Enjoy.

Reply

tangent, I’m thinking of trying out for the amazing race with my boyfriend.

Have a great trip!

Reply

Brooke looks so much like curly in that picture of her reading! (wait, that is brooke, right? ha!) Hmmm a tangent about my day? I need to hit up the library to get some beach reads- we leave for the beach on Friday YAY!

Reply

Haha I have the bottom retainer too. My mom called them and they said it should fall out eventually… that was 10 years ago.

Reply

I live the great Bluegrass state of KY!!! And no the grass isn’t blue!!! What area will you be visiting? In our little town we just had a Blueberry Festival, and I know you would have loved the Blueberry Pancakes with fresh berries from right here in our town!!! Have fun!

Reply

Ahhhh I wish I was there for the blueberry festival! I will be in Louisville !

Reply

Be sure to check out Churchill Downs and the KY Derby Museum, and the Louisville Slugger Museum. You may not like baseball but very neat to see the bat that is used in MLB being made! Plus Little Brooke will get her very own little bat!!
And if you have time venture over toward the Lexington area to see all the beautiful horse farms!!

Reply

You are the best! Thank you!

Reply

I’ve heard that the Provo Bakery has blueberry fritters! I haven’t gotten one (yet) but it could be worth a try? I know their apple fritters are pretty ballin’ so I imagine the blueberry ones would be too.

Reply

Ahhhhhhhhh we have to go try them!

Reply

I have a bottom retainer too! It’s been 15 years and I barely notice it anymore (unless I see it in a photo haha!)

Have a safe trip! :)

I just signed up for half marathon #4 so I’m in week 2 of training and finally incorporating some strength training in the hopes it’ll make me better/stronger/faster! :)

Reply

Today I am doing an FTP test on my bike. Twenty minutes straight of riding as hard as I can… hoping I survive. Maybe I’ll treat myself to a doughnut if I do. ;)

Reply

LOL my boyfriend has one of those bars in the bottom of his mouth too and I always ask him if he’s sure his orthodontist didn’t just forget about him!!

Awesome and sad tangent- yesterday my dad tried to qualify for the US Senior Open (golf stuff…) and was super close!! He was in the lead until the last 7 holes! Always next year dad!

Reply

Um….totally agree — roasted broccoli is WAYYYYYYYY better than steamed. Pretty much any vegetable roasted is better than steamed.

Reply

Steamed broccoli is SOOOOOO gross! Not because of taste but because of the smell! I steamed it last night to go with dinner and it smelled like someone died. As soon as I get home today, I’ll be throwing my Costco size bag of broccoli in the oven. No more steaming for me!

Reply

Good thinking with the airport breakfast! I too have a permanent retainer, but mine is on top and on the bottom. I love it, BUT I think my teeth are still moving :(

Reply

GENIUS airport breakfast. I’m so doing that next month!

Reply

My daughter, 13, talked me into taking a yoga class with her – I was so sore and was obviously not as limber as anyone in the class… oh well it was hysterical to do it together. We totally got the giggles. Next up we (and her 17 year old sister) are going to do the Zumba class – I cannot wait!

I take the running down a big notch during the summer when they are home from school so I can spend time with them & take a break from running… it really works for me, I still fit in shorter runs & leave the watch at home. I can only imagine the pressure when you are writing about all your races & training runs!

Have a great day!

Reply

Reminded me of the hotel my hubs and I stayed in for our ten year anniversary. They not only have wine and appetizer hour but at 8 pm they have pie hour even ala mode! They’re local fresh pies! Then at noon they have nacho hour!

Reply

I must stay there

Reply

I had a permanent bottom retainer from 15-21, when it fell out into a tuna sandwich. However, I still have one of the anchor/glue things on the back of one of my teeth.

Reply

My husband works right behind that Top Pot! That blueberry fritter looks amazing. I just called him and asked him to bring me home one. :) What hotel has cupcake happy hour? That is my kind of hotel!

Reply

I live in ky! Def agree with above person to see Churchill downs and the Kentucky derby museum. Also try a hot brown and derby pie! :) enjoy your stay!

Reply

Also the town of Midway is beautiful and quaint and worth checking out if you have time! It has an awesome half marathon in October. It’s a little outside lexington. If you happen to go to lex, there are a million unique places to eat, but I love Saul Good! It has an eclectic menu and an amazing dessert menu! Ok I’ll stop talking your ear off about ky! :) have fun!

Reply

I live in Louisville Kentucky, but I’ve also lived in Lexington. What part are you going to? FYI, the Louisville zoo has a splash pad, as well as the waterfront (I would definitely suggest the zoo’s over the water front) :-) Have a safe trip!

Reply

Haha, love the foam-rolling pic! What part of KY are you visiting? I grew up an hour north of Louisville, and my sister lives there now. I’ve been to Lexington more times than I can count and to southeastern KY, where my grandmother’s family’s from. A lot of people pick on KY, but it’s a beautiful state.

Reply

This morning I got home from my run and my husband held up the hose so I could run through it! So. Much. Fun. Who needs splash pads when you have hoses??? ;)
Blueberry cobbler sounds quite delicious right now!!!

Reply

I’m thinking of signing up for an Ironman and if (when!) I finish I need to decide this very important thing…do I get the IM tattoo or IW? Decisions decisions…

Reply

Justin’s packets are the best!

Reply

Amen to the airport food. Hmmm, my two tangents are…My Utah guests just left so today I’m all about watching Bravo’s new Ladies of London. I secretly wish I were British.

Have a fab day Janae.XO

Reply

I live in Bowling Green, Ky., so welcome! What area are you staying in? I grew up about an hour south of Louisville, and love the beautiful Bluegrass state! :)

Reply

My two tangents for the day are that today is my “Monday” because we just got back from the beach yesterday and I am 5’10” tall. Very random! :)

Reply

Mmm, I could eat a ton of roasted broccoli! Have a safe trip!

Reply

It’s really nice out but I have stuff to get done but I’m not getting anything done but I also don’t feel like going outside but I really should and this is my dilemma.

Reply

I mix broccoli with a little olive oil and a LOT of “jar garlic” and shake them in a gallon zip bag. Then I roast it in the oven. SO GOOD & EASY! I make a big bag weekly! I am addicted!

I live in St. Louis and work a few miles from the 2 time winner of “The Food Network – The Cupcake Wars,” Jilly’s Cupcakes! I am addicted to those as well!

Reply

I have enjoyed reading everyone’s tangents (Is this considered a tangent?)
When I was in Seattle, I was waiting for my bro to finish the half marathon and as I watched the marathoners and the half marathoners run in, I got such a runners high and inspiration JUST WATCHING people finish a race. So inspiring! I started to get a little teary-eyed! Made me want to go out and cheer for more racers in the future!

Reply

I follow Anne and Meghann’s blogs too, and I don’t comment often. It’s important I tell you though … you made THE BEST decision on which donut to choose. Yours is absolutely my favorite Top Pot donut in the picture of the three of you. I’m so glad you make good choices. All of your donut research is really paying off!! ;-)

Reply

I remember when it was called a pound key as well … and I’m 15. (I almost typed 115 – I guess I’m setting records ;) ) And roasted broccoli is definitely a good choice :)

Reply

Mmmmmm i am like you i love Broccoli :) Hope you are resting nicely Janae. I am also resting due to an injury, doctors orders. Take care xxxxx

Reply

I love this oatmeal tip! Never would have thought about that..usually too anxious about making my flight at all…not the best time manager when it comes to day of traveling.

I have a permanent bottom retainer too and my current dentist refuses to take it off. Rude!

Reply

I bring oatmeal and add-ins to the airport with me too! Best way to have breakfast at the airport

Reply

I took a lovely J. Crew sweater to the cleaners last week because I spilled something on it at dinner (obviously). I had only worn it one time, one week later (today) the woman calls to have me come in and “talk about my sweater.” Uh oh. I go in, she is mortified. We’ve been going to these cleaners for years so she knows me pretty well. She apologized profusely that the color of my sweater is RUINED!! It now looks tie dye :( Then, she pulls out a BRAND NEW sweater from J. Crew. She felt so badly that she went out and bought me a new one!!! It was the sweetest thing ever.

Reply

Janae I’m so proud of you for taking such a total running rest. Super important. Plus I bet you will get totally ripped and be addicted to strength training at the end! What a great bonus! I had to comment to make a broccoli suggestion – if you can’t eat it all just stash in a bag in the freezer. I always do that with the veggies I can’t eat. You can even roast the florets from frozen (although it’s not exactly the same). I also have top AND bottom retainers. I hate them for flossing but my dentist says they can never come off if I want my teeth to stay straight. And I do!

Reply

I have a top And bottom permanent retainer. Seriously love them, I know that is weird. Brooke is so adorable btw, it really is amazing to see her grow :)

Reply

I had a permanent bottom retainer for a LONG time. Years and Years and one day my dentist said “you know you adults don’t really keep these in this long” and he took it out and made me a bite guard/retainer to wear at night in it’ place :)

Reply

I have a bottom retainer, too… and I am SERIOUSLY starting to believe that it really is permanent! I got mine put on in the 7th grade and that was 14 years ago. Apparently they used something REALLY good to secure it.

Reply

I love seeing Brooke grow up! I did pilates yesterday outside and it started to rain…don’t worry, we kept going even in the rain.

Reply

I had one of those permanent retainers, but it drove me crazy and would get food stuck in it so I had it taken out…my teeth have since shifted, so maybe that was a bad idea.

Reply

Thanks for the airport/travel tip with the oatmeal! Keep those coming–lots of travel this summer.

Reply

I have a permanent retainer, so much easier than a regular one… which I broke mine =\ But I could seriously feel my teeth starting to shift just during the day when I didn’t have my retainer in. My biggest biffs with it is 1) when I have a sore on my tongue I always want to rub it against the metal and 2) certain foods (pineapple, mango, corn on the cob) seriously get stuck in it, and it’s such a pain to floss.
