That one time that I didn’t eat sugar for an entire day and my body felt really good…

This girl and I met at our 7th grade basketball tryouts.  I didn’t make it past the first cut and she made the team, she was also really cool and for some weird reason she wanted to be bffs for the next 16 years.  She is also extremely healthy and she is a really good example to me so I am going to show you all of the amazing meals that she made for me on Sunday.  Also, please note that I didn’t have dessert/candy at all yesterday?! I don’t remember the last time I did that.  And it made me feel pretty good.  I may attempt to do that every once in a while.

(It may seem like you aren’t reading HRG while you scroll through these healthy pictures of food but rest assured, you are at the right place)

A salad with tons of veggies, chicken, nuts and a homemade ranch that she made using greek yogurt.

IMG 2032

For breakfast we had sweet potatoes (cooked in coconut oil… um that stuff is ridiculously amazing), a fried egg, avocado and nuts.  I went back for more.

IMG 2023

I also got to babysit for a little while yesterday which was heavenly because I miss taking care of that Brookers of mine.

Watermelon and these chips.  Probably not healthy but they sound healthy so I ate half the bag.

IMG 2028

Dinner which included a zucchini waffle with pb and also an apple with pb right after I finished this plate.   Maybe if I continue to eat like this it will help my running or something silly like that.

IMG 2039

Jimmy Falon and popcorn is a great way to end the day.

IMG 2077

Basically I am putting this on here because I need to remember to get this next time I am at Costco because it was SOOOO good.

IMG 2040

A little exploration in Southern Utah at Snow Canyon.  We also drove part of the St. George Marathon course which made me want to put on my running shoes and run on it right that second.  Marathon course, I will see you and conquer you in October.

And then we laid down in the sand and I pretended that I was in the Bahamas.

I love coconut oil! I use it for anything I’m sautéing or frying or whatever. And in my hair haha.

I’ve never been a chips person but I found these veggie chips a few years ago that are insanely delicious so they’re the only ones I eat and I get them anytime I see them at the store :)

Coconut oil on sweet potatoes is the jam!! I eat that all the time. Or plain by the spoonful….It’s great stirred in coffee or hot cocoa too!

Reply

Trader Joe’s coconut oil is also amaaaaazing.

Have the best week!

I’m spending Memorial Day by going to Washintgon DC!
My favorite chips are any pita chips from Trader Joe’s. I swear I could eat a whole bag at once.

Reply

My favorite coconut oil! I cook everything in coconut oil, ghee, or olive oil, but coconut I also use for dry skin. And it smells amazing. Plus lots of antinflammatory properties.

In all seriousness Janae, eating clean can have profound effects on healing injuries. If you are at all considering doing a sugar detox I would say JUST DO IT and it could seriously change your life! Not to be annoying or dramatic, but I completely changed my diet while healing from tendonitis and I swear it had a big impact, speeding up healing and keeping inflammation down. Not to mention you just feel better all around all the time :)

I still haven’t tried coconut oil – I always see it at the store but have yet to pick it up!

I’m not sure what I think about cocnut oil. I thought it was good for you until my Mom’s cardiologist said it’s actually not because it’s one if those oils that hardens at rest. That means it will cause calcification potentially in your arteries. He said olive oil is best and to use cocnut sparingly. I always thought it was good so now I’m not sure about it.

I use coconut oil for everything. Skin, hair, nails. Also helps diaper rash.

Reply

I have a workout to do here shortly and then I plan on spending most of the day packing and cleaning. We have family coming in this weekend and move next week so there is LOTS to be done!

Reply

I haven’t tried coconut oil yet. I mainly use olive oil. Today is running (done) meeting a friend for breakfast & a baseball game! Looks like you had just an amazing weekend. Safe trip home :)

Reply

I love coconut oil!! I use it for my veggies, chicken, eggs…everything!!

I have not jumped on that bandwagon. My sister swears by it and my neighbor uses it as a moisturizer. I will have to try a small jar before I go Costco-size.

We’re doing a BBQ and visiting the cemetery.

Healthy food! I miss my kitchen!

Some suggestions for coconut oil:
1) use it when making an omelette
2) blanch some Brussels sprouts, then sauté until they get a bit crispy
3) sauté butter beans (cannelini beans), mixed cherry/grape tomatoes and thinly sliced spring onions, serve with lots of torn fresh basil tossed through.

If you start eating less ‘unhealthy’ food, be sure to make up the calories elsewhere in your diet so you have enough energy to fuel your training and recovery. It’s a common mistake. :)

We are spending the day hiking with our little kidlets and then bbq tonight with some friends.
I don’t use coconut oil to cook because it is hard at rest as a previous commenter said, and that kind of grosses me out. I do use it to make sugar scrubs and for skin moisturizer.
I’m going to have to try it on hair.

Off to the beach shortly! I do buy Coconut Oil as well as Coconut Oil Cooking Spray. I use the oil in baked goods and various recipes and the spray is terrific in a pinch to coat your pans, roast potatoes and veggies! And oh, I was never a chip person. I am sweet things all the way.

Reply

I LOVE coconut oil! Its great for greasing baking dishes, oil in stir-frys, substitute for butter in baking, just about anything!! We are spending today shopping and hanging out since it’s kind of grey outside. I could totally eat an entire bag of chips in one sitting! Love that salty crunch!

Reply

I have TJs coconut oil, but I am a little scared to try it. I have my son running, and he loves it.

Reply

Coconut oil is the best thing ever. I use it on my whole body and my face as moisturizer and I love that it doesn’t have scary chemicals in it and it’s super moisturizing. Its great to cook with too, but i use it on my body more often than I cook with it.

Reply

I love chips– I think a little too much! This spring it’s been the spicy chili Dorito Chips- YUMMMM.

Reply

Headed to Rhode Island today to spend some quality time with the hubs’ side of the family. Wish it wasn’t my rest day, or I’d be going running there! I am not a chips person, but if I were I’d go the regular Ripples route. With a nice side of sour cream and onion dip. :-)

Reply

I’ve just started cooking with coconut oil and I love it. Then again I love anything coconut and always have!

Reply

I love coconut oil. We use it instead of butter when we cook. I had sugary desserts for the first time at a homecoming yesterday and couldn’t even finish the dang cookie bar thing. It was so sweet! I hadn’t had sweets for months

Reply

I use coconut oil for a lot of my cooking and even baking. I also use avacado oil because it has a high smoke point. It’s available at costco, too!
I only use Olive oil for uncooked dishes like salad dressings. It oxidizes when heated.
We’re headed to the cemetery and maybe taking the kids to feed the ducks today!

Reply

I’m having a low-key memorial day. It is my day off from training so my husband and I are going to do a few things around the house and go to a movie this evening. We use that coconut oil from Costco all the time, particularly when we make homemade popcorn. Add a little sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and sea salt and it makes for a great snack or dessert.

Reply

I LOVE coconut oil!! I use it in all of my cooking, and only use olive oil as a dressing now. I put coconut oil, sea salt and garlic powder on everything – to grill chicken, roast veggies, even fry my eggs.

I tried out for volleyball in eighth grade and got cut. Turns out I can’t jump! That’s ok, it just let me focus on softball, which thankfully I was much better at :)

I cut out dairy and sugar a week ago, and it’s amazing how much better I feel!! What are zucchini pancakes???? Sound yummy!

Reply

Yes! I’d love to know about the zucchini pancakes too! Way to go on cutting out dairy and sugar! I’ve definitely been thinking I should taking the plunge! Do you follow a particular diet, or just went cold turkey?

Reply

I just went cold turkey!! I just got tired of feeling tired and bloated and all around yucky. I’m trying to follow a Whole30 diet, or as close as I can without losing sleep over it, and I feel great! I’m mostly focusing on avoiding all things processed. I did learn the hard way that coconut cream is not a good substitute for milk in my coffee – it has such a high fat content that it gave me horrible abdominal cramps, ugh! So now I’ve just been doing tea without cream in the morning. I highly recommend cutting out the junk, it just feels so good to cut out sugar cravings! Good luck!

Reply

Coconut oil is so good! I can’t that here in China. I can get chips though, soybean or shrimp flavored…. That food looks delicious but I love candy so much too!

Reply

I’m planning on spending memorial day hanging out with my momma (who is in town visiting) finishing up wedding projects!

Reply

I use coconut oil to cook my fried eggs with. And for with veggies.

I could eat chips every day all day. I recently tried these snap peas chips that tasted a bit like heaven.

Reply

Love love love coconut oil!! I use it to cook my chicken and eggs. And I also use it in baking. It really is the best!!
I tried out for soccer in junior high haha I got cut. Almost made the team, but I lacked experience, and was told to keep practicing. Yeeeeaaahhh…..that didn’t happen.
I’m spending today working on my bracelets, I’ve got one last try to get the length right, and I seriously need to get more cording tomorrow. I’ve got a week before the launch!!

I just lit up when I saw the article you posted about Tommy. I’ve never met him personally, but Tommy grew up in the same town as my boyfriend and he had the opportunity to make a short documentary about Tommy for a video editing class in his undergrad. I ran in the half yesterday at Ottawa Race Weekend and I was proud that the race allowed his dad to bike beside him for the race. Not many large events allow for accommodations like that. He is such an inspiration and I’m really excited to see all that he accomplishes!

Reply

I love coconut oil so much, I use it for everything when I’m cooking at home. Sweet potatoes cooked in it are especially delicious! I love chips, I would choose chips over dessert pretty much any day.

Reply

I’m Celiac so I use coconut oil for just about everything. Especially as a moisturizer because it’s gluten free and my skin loves it.

I don’t cook with it as much as I moisturize with it but I do use it occasionally. Love it.

Reply

Everything looks so good and healthy!!! I love love love candy, but I definitely feel so much better all around when I only have a little or don’t have it very often! Coconut oil is awesome, and again, using it just makes me feel healthier!

Reply

Can you give us the zucchini waffle recipe? :)

Reply

I’m spending my Memorial Day at home haha… I’m probably just going to catch up on some things that I need to get done, clean, and film a video for Youtube!

I actually got cut from my high school dance team… twice… That team was one of the main reasons that I chose to go to the school that I did. Needless to say, I was crushed. However, if I had made that team, I would never have tried out for my cross country team and never would have discovered my love of running. Everything happens for a reason!

We use coconut oil in my house all the time! We use it sauté certain veggies mostly, and I also use it for my skin sometimes.

I’m not really a big chips person. I love pretzels and popcorn though! As far a chips, Terra beet chips are pretty darn good! And tortilla chips with salsa…. Ok, maybe I like chips more than I thought!

Reply

I love pretty much all chips. I use coconut oil for lots of cooking/baking dishes and as a moisturizer for my body. Sounds weird but works and smells great!

Reply

I really love coconut oil on baked sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of cinnamon! Try it – it’s amazing!

It looks like you eat pretty healthy, however, I strongly encourage you (if you’re serious about being the best runner/athlete you can be) to go plant-based. You can slowly transition to vegetarianism and if that works out start looking into veganism. Even if you say no way and think I’m crazy for suggesting this, at least take a minute to check out vegetarian athletes on the web, you’ll be surprised at how many endurance ultra-runners are vegetarians and vegans. http://www.nomeatathlete.com is a wonderful site for exploring the no meat athlete benefits and for getting the support to switch to a plant-based diet. The site creator, Matt Frazier (who has ran many marathons, 50ks, 50milers, and 100milers) has a wonderful book on transitioning slowly to a plant-based diet, which means you don’t have to cut meat out entirely right away. The main idea is the less meat you eat, the more you will have to substitute meat on your plate to large servings of fruits, vegetables, and legumes, all of which have loads more vitamins and minerals than meat and are in fact an ideal source of protein. The extra nutrients in these plant-heavy meals speeds up recovery time between runs and hard cross-training workouts. Don’t believe me? Try it for a few weeks yourself! As long as you are eating until you are full and filling up on a large variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, beans, whole grains, nuts, and non-dairy milks you will not feel the lack-of-energy people who switch meat for carbs feel after going vegetarian.

Reply

I haven’t tried coconut oil yet, but I’m thinking I need to! Your breakfast that included a sweet potato is genius…and I will be stealing that idea!

So far I’ve spent my memorial day sleeping in, then going on a 5.5 mile run and sweating like crazy (and loving it, of course). Then we’re heading to Mom’s house for a mini cookout.

Hope you’re having a great day!

Reply

I’ve never bought coconut oil, mainly because I’m not exactly sure how to use it. I see it everywhere though! I’ve tried it on crackers before and it was really good!

Reply

It’s amazing how much what you choose to eat affects the way you feel. I know after a day of over-indulging on sweets and other crap, I always feel a heck of a lot worse the day after than if I eat really nutritious and produce packed meals. However, sweets and fun foods will never leave my life … because that would be no fun. ;)

I ADORE coconut oil and use it on everything! I’ve seen that coconut oil at Costco. As soon as I finish up mine from TJ’s, I’m going to get the Costco stuff!

Reply

I don’t normally eat chips but lately i’ve been craving RIDGED potato chips (non-ridged don’t satisfy the craving)! This post is a coincidence b/c i really don’t eat chips often. Must be something in the air…

I use coconut oil in place of butter – and rub any extra on my hands or in my hair!

Reply

This will sound weird but I use coconut oil on my skin after I shower/swim – it doesn’t leave my skin super itchy/irritated like lotions do!

Reply

I haven’t cooked with coconut oil yet but I have used it to make homemade body scrubs and it is so awesome. My skin is so, so soft after I use it!

Reply

The sand looks heavenly <3 as does that bowl of popcorn!!

Reply

Coconut Oil….basically the best thing on the planet!!

1. Cook veggies, chicken, tilapia..seriously everything with it!

2. One word…popcorn! It will change your world! If you have a popcorn maker, instead of using oil before putting in the kernels, use like a tablespoon of coconut oil. Just add a little pink salt to it after they are all popped, and it is amazeballs! I make this for me and the kids almost every other day!

3. Summer was getting a little rash on her leg – coconut oil to the rescue!

4. Oil pulling!! I instagramed about it a few months ago and my husband has been uber consistent with it (not my strong suit) and his teeth are so much whiter!!

5. Energy! I haven’t actually tried this but my husband does it a lot. After lunch when he is tired at work, he will just eat like a teaspoon or two of it and he feels like he just drank an energy drink…I know! I should try it… :)

Oh man…I should be getting paid for this! haha!

Having healthy friends cook for you is the best! Ran a 5kbthis morning and spending the rest of the day being lazy! I use that same coconut oil! I use to to cook with and as face wash, works miracles.

Reply

ooh I am so gonna have to look for the coconut oil at costco. I am almost out of my little glass jar. I have been using it way more often now.

Reply

I use coconut oil for literally everything. I use it in my hair as an overnight mask twice a week (it promotes hair growth), I use it on my face as a moisturizer since it helps clear my acne, if you ever get yeast infections (tmi, i know) it can be applied topically and it helps balance out your pH, it also helps improve insulin levels! There is SO much CO can do, it’s my go to oil!!

Reply

Working tonight! (Love my job).
I have used coconut oil for about 3 years. I buy mine at Trader Joes and they have a coconut oil spray.
I need a cook.

Reply

I have never heard of a zucchini waffle! I need to try it! I am spending memorial day at home with my family. It should be a fun day :) I use coconut oil for my hair, but I actually have never used it to cook ha. I need to!

Reply

I recently started reading your blog and I think you are adorable! I have a question for you…what kind/brand of popcorn is that? Did you put anything on it? I am looking for a healthy popcorn!!! Thank you so much :)

Reply

Those chips you were eating are now my favorite. They are so good. I found them about a month ago, and I’m hooked.

I am now using coconut oil on my face. I NEVER thought in a million years I would put oil of any kind on my face.

And yet, I love it. And my skins looks better than it has in years. The nice, coconut smell is an added bonus.

Coconut oil with lavender Young Living essential oils is also great for sunburns…a terrible thing I experienced recently because I was too lazy to sunscreen myself after doing the kids. :)

AHHH I cannot believe you mentioned Tommy!!

I’ve been cheering him on for like 4-5 years now. He trains at the club I coach with, but I’ve known him since he was in high school (I taught at his high school last semester – but he has graduated). I’m loving all the press he has been gathering over the past few months – he is super awesome. I ran in a race with him last year and even though I was huffing and puffing through a 5K – I had to yell “Go Tommy!!!!”

Reply

I use coconut oil to do oil pulling. I put a teaspoon in the morning, swish it around for about 20 minutes, and it pulls toxins from your body. It’s REALLY really good if you’re a teensy bit hungover, fixes you right up!

Reply

coconut oil is the bomb! I love using it for baking and even just for pan frying things, it gives a nice hint of coconut flavor to the dish.

Reply

I haven’t tried coconut oil yet, but I keep reading about it. I need to try it sometime soon. I am doing some yard work and bought a kiddie pool for my little guy to try out. so fun!!!

Reply

My Memorial Day has been pretty simple, but great! I went for a long walk with my sister, spent some time drinking coffee on the patio, took a long nap…awesomeness.

I tried out for the cheer squad when I was in 7th grade and didn’t make it. Glad…watching those competitions it looks like their faces hurt from all that smiling.

I love making pancakes with coconut oil in the pan. It gives them this great little crispness (I think I’m making up words today, haha) on the outside that is addicting.

Reply

I really love to use coconut oil to saute up a batch of veggies with garlic and ginger for a little Asian flavor! If you can ever find baby bok choy, combine that with mushrooms and broccoli for a really delicious and easy veggie side.

I wonder if part of what made you feel so good was getting a good balance of complex carbs? I really notice if I eat candy and then try to make up for it with lots of veggies I don’t feel as good as when I eat enough rice and potatoes/sweet potatoes too. For whatever reason I am really good about making sure I get enough protein and fruits and greens but not necessarily complex carbs so I really notice when I get it right.

I think your cute friend should just cook for you all the time though since everything she made looks awesome:)

Reply

We spent the weekend at a training picnic, or ‘tricnic’ lots of sports day style games with good people… And revision for finals, so good and bad.

I LOVE coconut oil. I use it for most cooking, it’s apparently (scientifically) got something in it that makes you feel happier so I’m not going to complain…

By chips I think you mean crisps? (For someone in the UK?) and if so, yep but only the boring flavours like prawn cocktail and ready salted…

Reply

All of that food looks amazing! What a delicious day :)

Your body feels good without sugar? Blasphmey… I get headaches if I don’t eat it hahahaha… that means I probably should start giving it up soon hey… Uh. Nahh.

Love coconut oil! Use it all the time to make sweet potatoes or other vegetables.
Not eating sugar can feel pretty great…. until it doesn’t. I did the 21 day sugar detox, and I honestly felt amazing. :)

I spent today traveling back from Florida and getting unpacked/ready for the week. Not a fun way to spend the day but I can’t complain since i was on vacation for 5 days!
I tried out for gymnastics in middle school and was cut..I ended up being glad I didn’t make the team because I was so busy with other things, it would have just been too much!

I spent my day doing laundry, running 10 miles, finishing lesson plans for work, and hanging out with my guy and our dog. He’s leaving town for work next weekend, so I’m soaking up all the extra time I can!

I love coconut oil! I make popcorn with it, use it as a moisturizer, in my hair and for a homemade sugar scrub – it’s awesome!

Chips are my weakness. I eat entire bags at a time, so I try not to buy them too often! I love plain tortilla chips best, but I like trying all the crazy flavored chips out there too! And I love terra chips. Mmm chips.

Wow- thanks for sharing that video of Tommy. He looks so relaxed after finishing. What a sweet guy and an amazing mum. So many people with autism aren’t that physically healthy because of meds, limitations etc. This is so inspiring as a mother to make sure my boys stay fit and healthy. Inspiring stuff. Go Tommy!

Coconut oil is the best!! I’ve used it to cook sweet potato pancakes — so delicious — eggs, pumpkin pancakes, etc.

I LOVE coconut oil!! Roasting sweet potatoes in coconut oil is my all time favorite! :) In general, it is 1 of my go to oils. It is also great for super dry spots on skin!!
AND I did no processed sugar for a whole month and it was amazing and hard – I had so much more energy to chase my 3 littles around! I am now trying to balance *some* sugar but very little. It makes a big difference!
