I think I have a problem.

What do you do when it is 5 something in the morning and you are completely unmotivated to go to the gym?

Text Sara and ask her to meet you there in a few minutes so that your hour on the elliptical and circuit training go by in the blink of an eye because talking with her makes the boring elliptical feel like a party.

PS in the text that I sent her that morning I did not ask what her what color of top she was wearing so that I could match her.

My body just takes awhile to get back into running after a race.  I think my brain makes my body go faster than I am trained for in a race and then it takes forever to recover.  Maybe I’ll run today, maybe I won’t… just learning to pay attention to what my legs tell me to do.

The rest of Brooke’s popcorn was just hanging out on the counter so naturally I just put it on top of my mixing bowl salad for lunch.  Not bad if you ask me but don’t take my opinion seriously because I pretty much love every food/meal possible.

IMG 1002

And the two foods that are just meant to be eaten together (I actually don’t remember the last time I ate an apple without almond butter all over it.  PS my recipe for this is at least 1.5 tablespoons of almond butter per apple slice).

IMG 1007

My highlight roots were about 5 inches long so I decided it was time to get some tin foil and sit under a lamp during Brooke’s nap time.

IMG 1005

Part of the finished product.  It looks pretty light in the sunlight.  Summer here we come.

IMG 1006

And when I got home Brooke was still snoozing and I was feeling tired so I made the good decision to have ice cream right out of the pint to give me energy:)

IMG 1015

After dinner (no, I didn’t have ice cream for dinner.  I had some vegetables and other nutrients) my mom and I took Brooke out on the town.

IMG 1020

The play place is where it’s at.

IMG 1035

I think I have a problem… Brooke is a kissing machine at the ripe old age of 21 months.  I am not looking forward to the teenage years.

I think it depends on the race for me. If I worked really hard for a PR and completely exhausted my legs, it will take me longer to recover. But if it was a really fun race where I felt awesome and didn’t wake up crying in pain the next morning, I am more motivated to get back into running because my endorphins are still going like crazy. Working out with friends is always the best motivator for a dark ‘o clock workout- every Wednesday for me!

I was in 8th grade when I had my first kiss…I can’t remember how old I was but it was all just VERY bad…lol

I DO color my hair…however, it’s been forever because I’m being cheap..lol But you MAY have inspired me to get it done!

I love to dip my apples in pb… actually there are these things called Grapples (grape tasting apples) and they taste the best with PB..

I’m pretty quick on the recover… I typically take two days and then can get back into after a half…. this marathon coming up…. probably way more..lol… hopefully I can still walk after it

Reply

Your hair looks fabulous! I discovered that almond butter mixed with vanilla ice cream is a super awesome combo! I seem to recover slower as I get older.

Reply

I have been coloring my hair regularly for yearssssss and just decided to let it grow out to my natural color. Fingers crossed I can hold out the highlight temptation when my roots are down to my ears :/

Reply

I don’t run fast enough to need a bunch of recovery. I want to work on that, open the door to making it hurt just a little bit more.

Reply

I usually recover pretty quickly after races, though I think some might say that’s because I don’t push myself hard enough. I’ll stick with what I’m doing, though.

I highlight my hair and have pink in it. I think I usually dye it every four months or so. I’m not really sure.

Reply

Definitely recover pretty slowly….but if I had a good race it motivates me to get out there quickly again!

Your hair looks beautiful, Janae! I’ve never seen it that light before!

Bananas are my absolutely favorite to eat with peanut butter or almond butter! I actually just had one. :)

Reply

I can’t pick a favorite, everything tastes better with peanut butter on it!!

After my first half it took me a while to recover but after my last one I was ready to go for a short run the next day. That one was a Disney race though so I’m sure stopping for pictures had something to do with it ;)

Reply

PB and celery – tastes wierd. Im not even sure if I like it… but I keep going back for more!

Reply

I love PB with celery and carrots!

Reply

I had my first kiss in Kindergarten…I started young! Haha. I ended up being in love with that boy till high school. Good times, good times.

I color my hair every few months – I”m going next week yay!

I ran a race on Sunday and I am mentally not recovered. I am definitely going to take the next few weeks to do whatever I want (whether it’s running, cross training, or rest) before I start training for my next half. I’m burned out. Blah.

Reply

First kiss when I was 16. With my husband.

PB on toast w/ bananas. Celery and almond butter.

Reply

I’m with you…Annabelle kissing nonstop too! :)

Your hair looks gorgeous as usual…very summery! I was a “highlighter” for quite sometime, but haven’t gotten them recently.

PS Ice cream out of the container is acceptable at any time of day. :)

Reply

I never color my hair…I pretty much never do anything to my hair…but I am threatening to cut side wisp bangs which is change for me!!!
I love peanut butter on bread, graham crackers and apples.
I recover pretty fast from races which then makes me question whether or not I gave it my all or let my mind take over

Reply

I think I was 15 or 16 because we weren’t allowed to date until that age.
I have never colored my hair–it is just plain brown.
I like cashew butter for some reason…
For the last two weeks I have been out (meaning: not workingout, but still teaching!) due to a ruptured cyst–my abdomen is full of fluid. However, I did make it to the gym for the last three nights.. so I hope that means I recover slow–even though that has nothing to do with racing. I probably won’t race anytime soon.

Reply

I am noticing I recovered super fast after Sunday’s half which is making me really happy at the moment….I don’t eat almond butter but peanut butter with apples is the perfect anytime snack. I can’t recall the last apple I ate without peanut butter.

Reply

I eat everything with peanut/almond butter. But an apple without nut butter = illegal and absolutely does not occur over here. Now that you mention it I think that and some ice cream out of the pint should be dinner tonight. ;)

Reply

I love peanut butter on crackers, apples, and bananas! Actually on anything really…

It doesn’t take me very long to recover from a race, in fact it often gets me extra excited to begin training for my next race after a good race. I do wonder if this is because I could have ran harder at the race, if I am not that sore from it?

Reply

I get some subtle highlights at the end of December just because my hair gets really blah in the winter- as soon as I hit sunlight I get lots of light blonde and reddish streaks in my hair= lots of free and natural highlights!
My body takes me a long time to get back into running after a race too.

Reply

I ran today for the first time since my half Sunday (in which I PRed by 9 minutes and officially kicked my own ass). The run didn’t feel great, but I felt like I needed to get out there! Aaaaand, now I want to try almond butter- I am currently obsessing over powdered PB (and it’s close cousin powdered CHOCOLATE PB)….

Reply

Almonds and Almond Butter, raisins and Almond Butter, oranges and Peanut Butter, Almond butter on Granola bars! I’m not a huge apple fan, I don’t know what it is about them haha. It usually takes me a day to recover from a race, thank god too because I like being able to get up hahahaha

Reply

I love any fruit with my PB, and that is the perfect ratio for fruit and AB :). I would love to color my hair, or at least put some highlights into it!

Reply

I kissed a guy in kindegarden but I don’t think that counts. I think my first kiss would have been 7th grade. At skateland haha-classy kids we were.

Almond butter + apples trump everything!

Reply

I had my first kiss at 15!

I do color my hair, I have “blonde” hair so I’ve been coloring it since the 7th grade ah!

Almond butter is soooooooooo good!

Reply

Love love your hair gorgeous girl!!

Reply

I recover pretty slowly. I have the bad habit of not training at a fast pace and then killing myself on race day. I usually take a week off after a race to make sure that I’ve fully recovered and also give myself some much-needed down time.

Reply

I was 8 years old when I had my first kiss.

I only color my hair in the winter because the sun is too strong to do so in the summer in Florida.

I eat almond butter and biscoff on Apples.

And I’m with you. My brain tells me to run much faster than I ever would at every race and it takes me ages to recover.

Reply

Your hair looks so pretty :)
I color my hair about every 6-8 weeks.
My kids and I absolutely love green bell peppers with peanut butter. Yummo!
This last time, it took me about 3-4 days to run again after my race. I’m not crazy fast like you though ;)

Reply

First kiss was at 13.

I color my hair every 4-6 weeks. I don’t really have grays but I like to pretend I am a redhead. :)

I am a traditionalist with peanut butter. I mix it with chocolate and make pb and jelly sandwiches. Sometimes I’ll slap it on an apple or a waffle.

I usually recover pretty quick from races and will run within a few days. Marathons though I give my self a week or two of no running.

Reply

My son’s teacher sent me a video yesterday of a little girl trying to give him kisses! He kept backing away :) He’s only 15 months and the ladies are already all over him! I like your new lighter hilights! I started getting highlights in mine about 3 months ago and it’s gotten pretty light. Light enough to where my friend was in the car in front of me and didn’t know it was me because she thought it was a blonde driving!

Reply

Your hair looks amazing! I colour mine as well, but it often feels rather useless in summer because the sun lightens it anyway.

My first kiss was either at 13 or 14 (opinions differ whether it happened with my first boyfriend or not lol)

Reply

Popcorn on a salad…that’s a new one :) I thought I was in the medium recovery category, but the recovery from my last half has taken a lot longer than I thought it would.

I’ve never colored my hair, but it has gotten much darker over the years. Every time I see my grandma, she tells me to stop coloring my hair and I have to spend 10 minutes convincing her that I haven’t done anything to it.

Reply

Your hair looked so blonde in that picture! Got my first kiss at 14. I honestly have no idea if that is normal…In my set of friends, some of them were earlier, some later, and some at the same age, so I think I was average. I hope my girls don’t start earlier than that.

In high school I went through all the manic panic colors, but now I just keep it natural. Dying it is too much work! (My hair is almost to my waist.)

Reply

Ice cream is seriously so much better right out of the carton, especially if it’s Ben & Jerry’s! And I had my first kiss when I was 11, it was at summer camp and we were playing spin the bottle! haha

Reply

First kiss was when I was 16 and it was AWFUL. I actually avoided it as much as possible with my boyfriend then. I even went as far as making my mom pick me up from his parents house 5 minutes before midnight on New Years Eve so I didn’t have to kiss him.

Do you highlight your own hair? Honestly your hair always looks so good you need to do some sort of hair tutorial.

Reply

You make me feel better – I take FOREVER to recover from races.

Oh yes, color my hair. I remember my friend telling me the first time I got highlights (10 years ago) that I would never b e able to stop. She’s right! I go about every 4 weeks.

Yummm. All nut butters are delicious. I like them on pancakes or bread with jelly.

Reply

You have gorgeous hair!! I am cheap and color mine with the $10 box kits. I have really long hair so my mom always has to do it for me. I do miss getting summer highlights though!

First kiss was in elementary, I think like 3rd grade, at recess. It was a dare :)

I normally recover at about a medium pace after half marathons, but this marathon recovery is SLOW. I might think about running again by the end of the week, but I don’t want to push it and end up injured.

Reply

I think I was in 2nd grade when I was first kissed. I did not like it and didn’t do that again for a LONG time! HA

I color my hair pretty frequently, like every 5-6 weeks…I have to keep those gray hairs under wraps! I need to go again and get some highlights to summerize my hair. (That’s totally a word.)

Almond butter is my absolute fave on apples, celery, toast, a spoon…

My recovery time after a race is s-l-o-w. It takes me forever to bounce back from a half or a full. Ugh.

Reply

I hate the elliptical. I cycle or go to spin on non run days. I usually do a recovery week, I still run and workout I just don’t plan my workouts and do what feels good that day

Reply

I have never colored my hair actually. I have blonde hair so I just can’t get myself to dye it any other color.

Hmm, I would say it depends on how fast I recover depending on how tough the race was (hills), how hard I pushed myself, how in shape I was, and if I warmed down and stretched properly afterwards!

Reply

I love the blonde highlights – very pretty! I highlight my hair every couple months. I may step it up a notch and go a little blonder this summer.

I think I was in 7th grade when I had my first kiss. It was pretty terrible. Ha!

Favorite thing to eat with peanut/almond butter? Pretty much everything!

Reply

Love your hair! I really need to get highlights again. Maybe when I have some more income – for now I will settle with a trim :)

Reply

I’m trying to think of a friend who I could text at 5 in the morning. Nope. Not one. Haha. I love spa/pamper days and getting my hair done. I probably get my roots done once every 3-4 months and my hair definitely gets lighter in the summer (naturally) with all the sunlight.

When recovering from a marathon, I usually take a couple weeks off of doing anything. Marathons require lots of recovery. Half marathons and triathlons are different because I usually have an entire schedule lined up and space them three to four weeks apart.

Reply

I recover really slowly too! I am feeling unmotivated to do much today. I need to just get going!

Reply

Nothing like a classic PB&J in my opinion.

Your hair looks great! I don’t color it now, but dyed it red once. I’m thinking of doing it again.

Reply

I think I was about 13 when I had my first kiss! It was during a game of Truth or Dare, so ya…not good.
I go back and forth with colouring my hair…I stopped for a long time, but then last month I randomly decided I wanted to be a redhead. I’ll have to redo it in another week or two though – red fades so fast!

Reply

I used to colour/highlight my hair – but not anymore. I haven’t dyed my hair since 2007!

Reply

I was on the late train and had my first kiss when I was 17, but I’m still with the guy almost 3 years later :) I like doing my hair temporary colors, but I’m naturally blonde so I normally just leave it alone! I recover pretty quickly after races, but I normally just do 10k and under haha. Congrats on your amazing race time by the way!

Reply

I was in 8th grade when i had my first kiss. i was soooooo nervous!! Ombre is the way to go because i can go months without touching it up. :)

Reply

It was the summer between 7th and 8th grade that I had my first kiss. It felt magical, lol.

My body actually recovers pretty quickly from races, but I am nowhere near as fast as you, so I’m sure that has something to do with it!

I do color my hair (getting grays, yuck!) about once every 2-3 months. I used to get highlights but the cost of them was getting to be too much so I will probably refrain until I go back to work.

Best thing with peanut butter–toast and with some honey drizzled on top….yum!!

Reply

I usually highlight my hair once during the winter. The summer sun does a fine job by itself – if I can avoid the sunburn on my scalp!! Thank goodness it’s naturally blonde which hides the grays or I’d be in there a lot more often!

Peanut butter goes with everything, doesn’t it??

Reply

My girls and I put peanut butter on just about anything – apples, bananas, waffles, pancakes, oatmeal. I prefer almond butter, but it’s just too expensive considering how many jars we go through a week!
I color my hair at home, just the roots to cover the gray and match my own color (VERY dark brown)… I’ve always wanted to do highlights or play with color, but honestly I’m too cheap and lazy to keep up with it!

Reply

I was 12 when I had my first kiss at the skating rink. Oh yeah! :)

I don’t color my hair, but I fear I will have to start soon. I can see some gray hair creeping in!!!

Apples and peanut butter are my fave. I don’t think I can eat an apple by itself anymore.

Reply

OMG Brooke! Haha! Too funny!

Reply

My first real kiss? I was 15. It was a mess. Hahaha.

I have never colored my hair, but I will have to eventually!

Peanut butter + nutella = flavor explosion of delight

Reply

I was 14 and thought I was ancient!! Ha!! Little did I know. Trouble with a capital t.

Reply

I had my first kiss at a church :o bad i know. I was in 8th grade and i am still with him as we speak (luck guy) lol. Iv never had almond peanut butter but everyone talks about it, so i guess i need to try it.

Reply

I color my hair with henna. It makes it reddish (since I have very dark hair, it gets tinted red), makes it stronger, and more voluminous. I used to use box dye but my hair would fall out in handfuls… now it doesn’t fall out anymore :D
OMG, Brooke is SO precious in these pictures!

Reply

Almond butter definitely with apples, my kids eat peanut butter with apples every day and think it’s candy. I am the same with most races, I push myself to the limit and then take a full week to recover (still run just relaxed running). First kiss was 13 and it is a gross memory lol :)

Reply

I love nut butter on anything! My favorite is in my morning oatmeal and fro-yo. Holly yum! I was five when I had my first kiss in pre-school. I remember it was this big deal. The boy even called me and we planned it all out behind the bookcase. Funny thing was my Mon listened to the call and confronted me the next day. Busted!!!

Reply

Trader Joe’s almond butter is the best brand out there. So, so delicious. Also, I’ve never colored my hair but yours looks so good!

Reply

I have super short hair so I color my hair every four to six weeks. I love yours, it looks so beautiful.

First kiss, ninth grade. Yuck. Scarred me for life. LOL.

Almond butter is good on anything. I could eat it anytime. Delicious.

Reply

Apples and peanut butter are the best!! I’ve never tried it with almond butter.
I just got my highlights redone thus weekend and I’m definitely lighter than I was before. I guess my summer look is here! Now I just need a tan ;)

Reply

Slightly off topic here, but just wondering if you would write a post someday about your hair routine. Your hair always looks gorgeous, and I know you’ve mentioned you don’t wash it everyday. So maybe if you could talk about how often you shampoo, do you at least wet it down everyday, do you do things differently on run vs. off days, you know, when it gets extra sweaty, etc. Thanks!!

Reply

Loving the hair color! I color mine very few months. Lighter in summer, darker in winter.

Apples and almond butter is my jam. Favorite snack, hands down.

Reply

Where did you get those awesome casual shoes again?

Reply

Ice cream eaten out of the carton saves time and dishes. Win-Win :) And why wouldn’t you eat ice cream for dinner?

#Elliptical4lyfe!!! I love that thing. I even put my elliptical PRs on my blog’s PR page. Yeah…elliptical PRs are totally a thing. I wish elliptical times translated directly to running times.

First kiss at 17. Slow to recover now that I’m old. Color my hair every 8 wks. Almond or peanut butter with chocolate chips all slightly melty from microwaving. Yum.

Reply

I LOVE the elliptical! I know some people despise the thing but I just put my book up there and go to town. Sorry to randomly comment but I have yet to meet someone who appreciates the elliptical as much as I do :)

Reply

I fell in love with it when my hip started getting really bad. The elliptical didn’t make it hurt and I could work until I was a hot, sweaty, endorphin-y mess again. And I love random comments :)

Reply

First kiss was 7th grade.. the grade my youngest son is in… yikes!

Yes, I color my hair every 5 weeks… turned 40 this year and i’m graying pretty quickly… :(

Reply

Love the summer color.

Apple + almond butter and I have the longest most consistent relationship of my life. Almonds saved me when I had to break up with peanuts.

Fave additions are corn thins, few dried currants for extra E, or gomasio (sesame-salt mix; don’t buy it – waaay cheaper to make. Also good on toast, salads, everything).

I have apparently and successfully blocked out my first kiss. But the one with my husband…that’s a much better memory ;)

Run on and happy snacking.

Reply

I have never colored my hair and i plan to keep it that way!

My favorite thing to eat with peanut butter is banana! I love it on top of oatmeal with banana and raisins.

I recover pretty slowly after a race

I was sooo old for kissing – I was 16 when I had my first kiss, and it’s so embarrassing, that only I and like 2 or 3 other people know about it.

My favorite thing to eat with PB is apples. I usually recover quickly from races, but this is day 3 after my marathon and stairs are still not my friend.

Definitely an outlier, my first kiss was at 24 :) But totally worth the wait!

I took off three full days of exercise after running Boston a few weeks ago and that really helped. My sore muscles appreciated it.

I’m all about the cookie butter and apple combo over here.

I love almond butter on bananas, but I’m an almond butter snob. I only like the fresh ground!

The older I get, the longer it takes me to recover!

And I’m touching up my high lights next week!

Reply

16. At 15 I broke up with my boyfriend because he wanted to kiss me. True Story.

I no longer dye my hair – I figure I’ve only got a few years before I’ll have to dye it to hide the grey.

I’ve never tried almond butter. I’m sorry Janae, I’ll fix that. :)

Reply

I was 14 and in 8th grade! I still remember where in my house it happened (in the kitchen) and what I was wearing. Tommy Hilfiger shirt, jeans, and doc martin boots. Ew I can’t believe I dressed like that!

Reply

Brooke looks like she had a blast at the play place! I always smother apples and celery sticks in almond butter, or just use a spoon and eat it out of the jar!!!

Reply

It generally depends on how hard I push during the race and how long I leave to recover afterwards. But normally not long, a couple of days to stop feeling stiff… a week to get back to where I was. But then again, I haven’t done any huge or particularly hard races yet.

I get my hair coloured in the spring. I’m naturally pretty mousey so I don’t really need to, I just like getting it a bit lighter in the summer.

1st kiss was late… 18 and it was HORRIBLE. Sluggy and slimey and ugh. I was horrified by just how gross it was!

Reply

I was 12 when I had my first kiss – I was taunted by friends at a party. In retrospect, not the wisest choice.

I have virgin hair! Never once been died. I understand this is somewhat rare.

My favorite way to eat Peanut Butter is wrapped in milk chocolate, in the shape of an egg, around Easter time. Now I’m depressed that I have to wait another year to do so.

Reply

Love your highlights! I usually get balayage done on my hair where they use saran wrap instead of foil.

I like to eat almond butter with apples too! I’m such an almond butter fan!

Reply

J, too bad the term “popcorn chicken” is already taken =).

Reply

I think I was 14 or 15 when I had my first kiss. I remember thinking it was so weird! I haven’t colored my hair in about 2 years. It gets light enough in the summer but right now it is kinda dark so I need to get some sun in it! I recovery pretty quickly from a race. My husband always jokes that I am one day ahead of him in recovery…whatever I say is sore or feeling better, he says it the next day.

Reply

I would eat popcorn any where, any time, any how. (Kind of a Green Eggs & Ham, I guess). I’m also an apple and peanut butter gal all the way. I may have to have some right now.

I’m usually pretty quick to recover from races. Which probably means I didn’t push hard enough.

First kiss? Well, I went to see a local celebrity when I was 4 years old and was called on stage with a little boy about the same age. He had the boy kiss me. That’s the first I remember. But first “real” kiss — probably 12. It was awkward at best.

Reply

Ahh!! You can’t just show us a tiny peek of your beautiful new do! We need a full on pic! :) It looks great, though!

Reply

I have short hair so it is very obvious (and awful) when I don’t stay on top of it – I get it cut and colored every 4 weeks. Good thing I love my hair dresser.
I’m racing a 50 this Saturday and I don’t plan to run at all next week!!!

Reply

Love your hair! I’m getting highlights on Friday (LONG overdue) and so excited!

Reply

Those arms! And I love your hair. :) I’m the same way, post race it takes me a while to get back into the swing of things and get running again. Today was my first long-ish run after NWHM.

That is SO funny that Brooke does that too!! Gabriella likes kissing every page- especially in her ‘ladybug’ book. I just die laughing every time. I have NO idea where she got it from…I guess it’s a girl thing?!

Reply

I admire you for being ANYWHERE at 5 in the morning- but especially for working out! You are truly amazing!! Unfortunately, I’m not a morning person. I’ll get up for a triathlon, but I’m not awake until I hit the water. You’re awesome!

Reply

Um excuse me but you NEED to give more details about that hair color….from that one picture it looks gorgeous! I’ve been wanting to get highlights but have not been brave enough yet!

Your hair looks amazing!! Can I get the name and number of who does it?

Reply

Hey! I go to Gina at amara salon in Orem! She is the best!!!

Reply

Niiice highlights! I always love your dark hair, but that’s only because I’m a natural blonde (not as fun as you might think) and so I’m jealous of people with gorgeous brown hair.

Reply

I go in spurts with highlighting my hair. I haven’t done any color for a few years now, but I’m kinda sorta itching to do some highlights…I just hate the upkeep lol.

Ooh your hair looks fab!!
