Running summary from last week and sharing the love of running with teenagers.

52 miles total.

Monday: 2.25 miles (8:31 pace) in the morning with friends and 9.75 miles (7:30 pace with last 4.25 @ 7:02 pace) at night on the treadmill.

Tuesday: Not sure how much I ran around antelope island for the movie filming but maybe a mile or so?!

Wednesday: 9.5 miles of trails @ 9:02 average pace. I LOVE MY TRAIL RUNNING DAYS THE MOST.

Thursday: 10 miles of crazy hills @ 7:58 average pace. Leg felt like jello by the end of this.

Friday: OFF. A little walk to go find the best place to read.

Saturday: 20 miles @ 7:20 average pace with 10 miles @ 6:50 pace. 4 breaks throughout run.

View on our long run:

Sunday: OFF but a walk with some of my absolute favorite people. Brooke said the word doggy at least 500 times throughout the walk.

PS I have been sporting my EZ T III RUN HAPPY shirt for all of my walks and some of my runs and this thing is beyond comfortable, I love the color and it is made out of moisture-wicking and odor-resistant fabric… win-win for everyone. Yes, I get Brooke ready for the day hours before I consider even brushing my own hair.

Plus, who doesn’t love a shirt that says Run Happy all over it. What a good reminder:)

I am stoked to share with you an interview that I had with Noelle Morgan-Chilcoat. As a special education teacher, Noelle works daily with students who struggle academically and behaviorally. She started a cross country team as a way to teach what she enjoys and as a chance for her students to positively interact with their peers outside of the academic area. This year she had four special education students on the team! I love her story and it reminds me of the good ol’ days when I started a cross country team at the high school that I used to teach at. Sharing your love of running with teenagers is the best!

Q: How long have you been a Brooks ID member?

A: I have been a Brooks ID member since 2009.

Q: What does being one mean to you?

A: I love being a part of the ID community. I’m a big believer in their products. I have only worn Brooks running shoes since I was first fitted into them years ago. I really like how Brooks focuses on running and they take input from runners to develop their shoes (such as Scott Jurek).

The coaching help I have gotten from the ID community has been great. Last season I posted on the facebook page about different games I could incorporate into my middle school cross country and I got tons of ideas from the other coaches. It’s a fantastic resource and way to connect with other coaches.

Q: How has running changed your life?

A: Running has helped me be a stronger person, both physically and emotionally. The older I get, the more challenges I have to face with aging parents and children becoming teenagers. Going for a run always helps my mood improve. I have never once come back from running saying, “I wish I hadn’t done that.” It’s usually, “I wish I had gone longer.”

Q: What’s your favorite part about coaching?

A: My favorite part of coaching is introducing kids to the sport. The kids who are not the athletes but who come out to run and discover a love for it.

P1060578

I’d have to say that the most fun was taking my middle schoolers to our first ever cross country meet and winning both the boys’ and girls’ races. The other schools had never seen us before and we showed up and won!

Q: Any fun student success stories you’d like to share?

A: Last year I had one of my special needs students decide he wanted to run on our middle school cross country team. I was really nervous about it since he had quite a few behavioral issues. He has an educational identification of Emotionally Disturbed but a multitude of medical diagnoses (Autism, OCD, Tic Disorder.. to name a few). I had a meeting with his parents and my special ed coordinator because we were so worried about him during the races. I had visions of him running off the trail and into the woods with us searching for him. We discussed having the need for an aide to run with him, a peer buddy, and other accommodations. Needless to say, all our worry was for nothing; he did awesome. He never needed someone to run with. He was slow but just kept going and followed the other runners. He came out for every race last year and will be going to high school next year. He says he’s going out for high school cross country :)

Q: What is one of your favorite quotes or mantras?

A: I love the saying of “Relentless forward motion” since it applies to life as it does to running.

How was your running week? How many miles did you get in? Felt good or not so much?

I love that shirt!
What she is doing for those kids is amazing!!!! It could be something that motivates them through some of their hardest struggles!
I know my daughter really struggles with school, she has dyslexia, and I have been doing races with her and trying to motivate her through running. This way she something to not only challenge her but also encourage her.
I ran a 1/2 marathon this weekend…not my best race, but a beautiful day and a great race!!!!!

Wow, that is so awesome that you are running races with your daughter and it is helping her! Congrats on your half… Not every race can be amazing but you finished! Way to go!

That’s awesome Janae and I couldn’t be happier for you. It looks like a great and quality week of mileage for you. I know you are going to rock out on your marathon.

When I was an education major I worked with students and did my prestudent teaching in a special needs classroom. It was really eye opening and so rewarding. I will never forget that.

My running was good this week. I actually had a recovery week and besides being chased by a few turkeys it was ok. ;)

Reply

I am glad you took a recovery week after your killer half marathon! Congrats again on the engagement and pr! Such an exciting time for you!

LOVE THE SHIRT!!! And she is an amazing teacher/coach!! Thank you for the great interview. I can’t wait to move closer to the city so I can wake up early and run instead of it being in the 90s and me chickening out! lol Sunday breakfast was just chex cereal and gatorade since I got glutenized.

Reply

Running in the 90s?!? Yeah, I think I would die. I forgot about chex cereal… That was one of my favorites as a kid!

My running was kind of awesome this week. 26 miles, and I got to get out in the sunshine! My best run was today! I set out to do 6 or 7 miles, but it was one of those runs where you just want to keep going, so I ended up doing an even 10!

Breakfast this morning wasn’t too exciting, I had coffee and a couple of english muffins with butter and my grandma’s apricot pineapple jam. Delicious!

Reply

Great job on your run today! You rocked it! Running in the sunshine = the best!

Reply

ZERO miles this week. Trying my best to heal a glute muscle strain/pinched nerve. I hope to be back at my marathon training ASAP! Great runs this week Janae… I am vicariously running through you :)

Reply

I am so so sorry! What are you doing to get it feeling better besides not running? I hope you are back out there ASAP!

Reply

I have been keeping up fitness with cycling and the elliptical – two things that don’t hurt me, going to physio, and tons of stretching/foamrolling! Oh, and the electric heating pad is my new best friend :)

Reply

I am so glad that cycling and the elliptical don’t hurt.. the worst is when every type of exercise hurts. Keep up the hard work girl and you are going to be running in no time!

Reply

Love that shirt! Run happy is a wonderful reminder :) My best run was definitely on Saturday. I felt much better than I did earlier in the week and I had a great running buddy!

Reply

I want to come with you two someday! So excited for you to go to Europe! Ahhhhhhh!!!!

PLEASE do! Girl that would be so fun! and thanks!! I’m freaking out I’m so excited :)

We just started a running club at my district’s middle school this year. I am one of the assistant coaches. It has been so much fun seeing the kids faces whent hey run farther than they ever thought they could!

Reply

That really is so cool! I know exactly what you mean about seeing their faces… Keep me updated on how it is going! Have a great day!

Reply

Aw I would love to coach running but I coach soccer and basketball and my kids just get mad at me for making them run ;)

Reply

Hahahah that is awesome! They will grow to love running:)

I’m tired just looking at your Thursday and Saturday workouts! My best run this week was TODAY when I ran in a local 4-mile race. Wasn’t sure what to expect since it’s a hilly course and I hadn’t run more than 2-3 miles at a time in several weeks bc of my knee issue, but I surprised myself by getting first female. That does NOT happen very often! It was a really small race, but it felt great to be back out there!

Reply

FIRST FEMALE!!!! AHHHHHH STEPH!!! You are amazing… and on a tough course and after an injury?!? WOW!

Reply

Coaching kids sounds like a great thing to do! This morning, I had cream of rice with honey for breakfast before I went for a run. On my run, I saw an armadillo. (I live in Texas.)

Reply

I have definitely never seen an armadillo while running:) Maybe I need to come down to Texas and run a race or something! Have a great day Tina!

Reply

I love getting my girl dressed way better than getting myself dressed! Her clothes are way more fun.
I didn’t eat breakfast this morning (this happens maybe once every 10 years because I love breakfast) because my baby got blessed this morning and I had to get everyone ready and myself and take pictures. I just ate double the amount at our family brunch after :)

Reply

NO BREAKFAST!?!? I would have been shaking ha. Congrats on the baby blessing and I hope the brunch was amazing:)

Reply

My best run was Thursday when I did 4 miles at my goal HM pace (6:45), and they felt easy! I did 35 miles, which is a cutback for me, because I’m tapering for BOSTON next Monday!

Reply

Please let me know how Boston goes. I am so excited for you and GREAT GREAT GREAT JOB on your Thursday speedy run!

Reply

Woohoo teen runners!! I am one myself:) I love cross country so much – my favorite quote on it is “you know you run xc when everyone encourages everyone, no matter their school, pr, or body type.”

Today for breakfast I made a belgian waffle topped with blueberry maple syrup, peanut butter sauce, and bananas :)

Reply

That is such an awesome story!!! I’m a middle school teacher but just bouncing around from school to school until I get a full time job. I would really love to start a run club once I have a school to be at more than 6-10 weeks… Thanks for the inspiration!

Reply

Running Boston next week so in freaked out taper mode now! Got 28 miles in total for the week with even less planned for this coming week. Also my husband is away with my 2 daughters and I’m just with my son for a few days so my run schedule is way messed up. Anyone have advice on learning to be flexible with running at different times of day? This is always a weakness for me! I seem to always have bad runs when they aren’t early morning.

Love the run happy shirts! Just bought a new one to run my next half in :)

What an awesome story about running helping special needs kids, it really is such an amazing sport!

I had my biggest mileage week ever this week at 38 miles! My best run was actually today when for the last 1.5 miles of a 14 mile hilly run were at my goal race pace and I still had acceleration and energy left at the end of it. My confidence is really starting to come together for this year’s racing season and I am happy all my hard work is paying off and I am really enjoying the running I get to do.
For breakfast I had a double serving of Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal (Bob’s Red Mill) with walnuts, raspberries, brown sugar, banana, milk and a yogurt. Had to fuel up for my long run! Delicious.

Reply

I had a good running week! Only 21 miles but I’m not currently training for anything. Most importantly I got in a speed day, a long run day and then a couple of easy, fun days.

What a great interview — I love the “relentless forward motion” mantra myself. I also love “run the mile that you’re in.” It’s really helpful during any low points that might come during a long run. It can feel daunting to think I still have XX miles to go, but if you just concentrate on the half mile or quarter mile left for the mile you’re in, it takes the stress/pressure away and before you know it you’re done!

Reply

This interview was great. I love the way everyone was really worried about the boy and then he did an awesome job because he really wanted to do it. Never underestimate or make assumptions about a person with ‘special needs’. I’ve found my boys always surprise me when I’m least expecting it. They can do things now that I never thought they would achieve. It would be great to learn exactly how Noelle trains the kids (any modifications, reinforcement etc). Maybe next interview!

My best long run was my half marathon yesterday morning! http://fightingforwellness.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/carmel-half-marathon-race-recap-2014/

I love your “run happy” shirt- I want one now!

My cousin is a nun and is in a convent that takes in kids that have been taken away from their families due to abuse or drugs etc..
Anyway, she started a running group and they ALL run everyday. Babies in strollers and everyone runs. It is how they start their day. She has been featured in running world magazine and they are often seen at races. I love her! The best part is that they wear their Habits while running. Never out of uniform!

Love this!

LOVE that shirt!! Had Cap’n Crunch for breakfast… yep. :)

Best run of the week was actually last Monday. It was a short 5 mile run but I was fast and felt great.

Breakfast this morning consisted of waffles with fresh strawberries

First off, I just need to say that you are my number 1 running inspiration! You make me want to get my mileage up and my speed up as well!

My running was a little bit off this week… I just feel so unmotivated while I am at school and my mileage suffered because of that Maybe around 20 miles this week?

Can’t really say what my best run was this week… Off week.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to have a real breakfast today! I had a couple of animal crackers and a bite of a protein bar… So sad. Breakfast is normally the highlight of my day!

Absolutely love that story! Brought tears to my eyes about how she took a risk with one student and it may have changed his life forever.
My best run was yesterday 10 miles on treadmill….never thought I’d say treadmill but had a scary tues night there’s some creeper in town who grabbed me. Totally ok but hoping he gets caught. It was daylight so the guy was just a weirdo. Don’t want to frighten anyone. But a reminder to carry spray and have some sort of gps on phone.

My Sunday breakfast was two croissants that were so slathered in butter that it was pretty much just butter with bits of croissants through it! :-) And I didn’t even feel bad about it because on Saturday I had my first run in MONTHS! I’ve not been too well so far this year and my running, and general exercise routine, has taken a real beating. I didn’t run too far or too hard but it felt unbelievable to be running at all! So happy to be back!

Reply

That story made my morning! It is so inspiring to me how people with special needs of any kind can completely make a 180 when they find something special to them like running or music.

Reply

Sunday morning was waffles, homemade strawberry/blueberry sauce, bacon and fresh squeezed orange juice! I of course apologize for not inviting you ;)

Reply

I LOVE that shirt! My best run was either my run in the dark at 6 am with my running partner, or my half yesterday that i actually ended up WINNING in my age division! (i’ve never won a race…I was VERY excited!!! That is my finish line photo that I will be submitting to you!)

Was supposed to get 30 miles in but came up a few short at 26………by far Monday – Wednesday were the best running days because we were vacationing in Nashville and I got to run on the trails in the suburbs…very hilly, full of wildlife, and BEAUTIFUL! I loved my cross country coaches in school…kudos to any reading!

Reply

I ran a half-marathon yesterday! My time was 2:26:47 – my goal is to get it under 2 hours this year!

I have another half-marathon coming up on April 26th in Nashville! I’m nervous because I heard it was super hilly. Eek!
