Utah Valley Marathon, just 13 weeks to go!

Just 13 weeks until my marathon.  I haven’t done a marathon in FOREVER (for some reason my body doesn’t always love running trillions of miles but I am feeling really good about doing this one in June).

Picture from 2010 when I ran the Utah Valley Marathon.  Pre-blog days.

Utah Valley Marathon 7

The Utah Valley Marathon (I have done the full and also the 1/2 a few times) is by far the prettiest race I have ever done. You run along the Provo River for the majority of the race and you will see waterfalls, a reservoir and my favorite canyon along the way. It has always been extremely organized, the course is fast and the temperatures during this time of year (it is on June 14th) are always perfect in the canyon (it is usually about 48 degrees at the race start and 60 degrees at the end).

I took this picture when I ran the 1/2 in 2012 (Brooke was with me because I was 7 months pregnant at the time).

Screen Shot 2014 03 14 at 7 57 07 AM

Runner’s World Magazine even named the Utah Valley Marathon a Top 10 Marathon to run for 2014!  PS it is a USATF certified course and also a Boston Qualifier.

You can see how crazy beautiful the course is here:

Now can you see why I chose this race for my key race this year!  I feel like you should all make a runcation out of it and do it with me on June 14th.

Last week’s miles:

Monday–  30 minutes spinning and 8 miles of running @ 7:50 pace.

Tuesday–  8 miles with 14 x 1 minute pick-ups (pick-ups @ 6:00 pace and recoveries @ 8:00 pace).

Wednesday– 9 miles @ 8:13

Thursday– Pump and 1 mile on the treadmill.

Friday– 5 miles @ 7:56 .

Saturday– 20 miles with friends!  8:37 average pace.  Felt great and after all of our talking about ultra’s during this run it kind of made me want to run an ultra.

Sunday– REST. REST. REST. REST.

My next race is the Sleepy Hollow Half Marathon – on Saturday! I hear it’s mostly hills, but I’m excited to run my first half in over two years, which is way too long!

I have several rest days this week, tapering is boring.

Next race is the NJ Marathon in six weeks!!
My rest-ish day was Friday. My foot started bothering me during my run so I cross trained for a half hour and sat in the sauna instead. Twas a great decision :-)

Yesterday was my rest day, although it isn’t normally. Tomorrow is officially it – restorative yoga, here I come! Next race is the Dirty Half in Bend, Oregon, although I won’t be “racing” per se, just using it as a training run. The Eugene half in July is my target race!

Holy cow the Utah marathon looks amazing.

Reply

It sounds like a gorgeous race. Someone yesterday was talking about how gorgeous Utah is for runners. It makes me pretty jealous…not that the forest of NJ is half bad. I cannot wait to see how you do Janae!

Reply

I’m running a half in 2 weeks and I’m pretty excited about it. I had my off day on tuesday, which seems like a kind of weird day to have as an off day but it just happens to work best with my schedule.

Reply

Eeek! My next race (and my first BIG race) is next Saturday! My first half-marathon. So excited!

Tapering this week, and getting everything ready to run.
Woohoo!

Reply

I don’t have a race planned yet but I am itching so badly to find one. We have a lot of crazy stuff coming up in a few months (like a BIG move) so I am trying to hold off and see how things go before I commit to a race. Hopefully I can start planning one soon!!!

I always take Fridays as rest days — it’s what works best for me :)

My next race will be a half marathon in September! Wahoo!

Reply

Ahh I would be so excited if you trained for an ultra! I bet you would be so awesome at ultra running. My goal is to run a 50-miler before I turn 30 :)

Utah looks gorgeous. I’ve driven through the state twice and day-dreamed around running through it every moment I was in the car looking out at the pretty views!

Reply

Ahhhhh that’s so neat! I ran the canyonlands half in Moab this weekend and the guys at the expo for the the Utah valley marathon sold that race so well!

I am now absolutely dying to run the half!!!!
And the race medals, so cool!

Reply

I’m running a marathon in May and trying to qualify for Boston. Maybe I should come to Utah and run the half and cheer you on! :-) The course looks so gorgeous.

Someday I will come to Utah and run a marathon with you bc you are so awesome and Utah looks incredible!!
My next race is in two weekends, it’s the Eastern States 20 miler-it’ll be my last 20 before Boston!!:)
Today is my rest day bc yday was my 20 miler. It was NOT an on day, and I am sooo glad it’s over with until next week!

Rest day = Friday. By the time Friday rolls around, I’m usually ready to veg from a long week of work! I have my next race next weekend – a 1/2 I’m absolutely not ready for, I’ve been such a chicken this winter!

Reply

You are going to rock the Utah Valley Marathon! That looks like a great week of training. I can’t wait to hear about your race. :)

I just ran the DC Rock ‘n’ Roll half on Saturday and it was pretty good. Not my best, but there is always another race. I need to sign up for a race! The next one I’ve signed up for is in November.

Reply

I’m planning on doing the utah valley marathon! My knee has really been bugging me which is super frustrating. My body felt great training for my last marathon so any tips would be appreciated! I took a week off from training then did my long run yesterday and it flared up. Today I have been trying to rest it!!

Reply

I am running the Utah Valley Half this year!! I’m so excited! I’ve never been up Provo Canyon believe it or not in the handful of times I’ve been to Provo for football games, so I’m looking forward to the views!

I’m also doing the Grand Canyon Half on May 17. I hope I can handle the two races 4 weeks apart because I’ve never done that before. But I think they will both be a lot of fun!

Reply

My next race is BOSTON!!! I usually take Fridays off. Sometimes, I feel a nagging pain after my long run over the weekend, so I’ll take Tuesday off. But usually Friday!

Reply

Good luck training!

Reply

My mom and I are thinking about driving to Utah in June right when the race is (we live in Michigan) to visit my cousin in SLC. I’m thinking about doing the half while we’re there!! If I did please tell me that you will have a meet up and we can go for froyo?!?! (I have never had froyo before. Sad life.) I would love to meet you!

Reply

That marathon looks beautiful!!! It sounds like you are in a great mindset to rock that race! You had an awesome week of running and workouts. Looking forward to hopefully getting a run in with you in Seattle in June :)

Reply

I’m running the half that day. I’m so excited for it! I know you will do awesome!!

Reply

SUCH AN AWESOME PACE. You are my running HERO.

Reply

Utah is absolutely beautiful!

I just ran the St. Malachi 5-miler on Saturday, and my next race is March 29th- The Pappy Run. This race was the idea of a 7th grade girl who lost her Pappy to cancer! I was so inspired by her, I had to sign up~ and convinced several family members to do it also (even the non-runners). It is a 5.3 mile hilly course so I better get in some hill work!

Reply

By the way- The Pappy Run is near Cleveland, Ohio is anyone is up for it!!! :)

Reply

Wow what a beautiful Marathon. Good luck! you will do great.

Reply

I ran it last year. It was gorgeous, but the porta potty situation was a nightmare, I guess they didn’t get set up where they were supposed to. It was total chaos and people were desperately trying to find a place to go. It was also very very hot, it ended up being in the 90s by the afternoon. I wouldn’t mind doing the half, but if I ever do a marathon again, it will be in the spring. I need cold weather to run that long!

Reply

Can’t wait to hear how your race goes! :)

My next race is a little 5K in 2 weeks! Rest days usually fall during the work week when I’m too tired for work + a workout…

Reply

I love reading your workouts at the end of the week! You are incredible! That marathon course is beautiful! I have 6 weeks until my marathon. Seems like the training weeks go so fast. I always rest on Friday and then usually only do a short workout on Sunday.

Reply

I am actually really really close to registering for this race!! I’ve been looking for a flat half for a PR race but the elevation makes me a tad nervous. It would definitely be an awesome runcation!

Reply

I have a 10k this weekend and possibly a half April 5th. I need a beautiful course to do my first full marathon. Maybe I’ll plan on the UVM next year :)

Reply

Next race is the Love Run half marathon in Philadelphia on 3/30
I had a lot of rest days this week. I was sick. (Mon, Tues, Wed)

Reply

I’ll come watch you!! Actually, my son is running it- so I’ll be watching both of you :). Can I bring you some swedish fish, gu, gatorade???

Reply

Soooo cool! And yes yes yes to the Swedish fish!

Reply

Wow, that really is beautiful! I’d be worried that I’d just run right off the trail because I’d be too busy looking at the mountains.

Reply

I have never been to Utah and would love to spend a week there traveling around. I hear there is some awesome mountain biking and hiking. Maybe I will have to venture out that way this summer – road trip!

My next upcoming race is Ironman 70.3 Boise and my next marathon is the Portland Marathon in early October. I am also planning on doing a number of endurance triathlons and half marathons in between!

Reply

I’m running the Utah Valley Marathon!! My first full, so excited!

Reply

What a beautiful course!! It must make it go by so much faster!
I ran a 5k this weekend (and I PRed!!) but I don’t have another on the calendar yet! I’ve signed up for the Peachtree Road Race lotto, so I’m just crossing my fingers that ill get in.

Reply

I think I need to visit Utah. It looks amazing. I ran a 5K this weekend and beat my time by 2 1/2 minutes from last year :) I was pacing DH last year, but not this year. It felt awesome to run without the stupid cast. I’m running a 10K next weekend. I tried not to lose my base but the last 7 weeks have been kind of rough. I’m so ready to be running like normal! I have 2 halves on the books for August and I’m debating doing one next month.

Reply

My husband just registered me for the half as a birthday present for me! We’ll be driving out from SoCal. I can’t wait! Maybe I’ll see you there!

Reply

Ahhhhhh yes!!!!!!!!

Reply

lol saw this diet coke video and thought of you :)

Reply

I’m registered for Utah Valley TOO!!!!!

Reply

I think I need to add “run a race in Utah” to my bucket list! … but not in winter haha

Reply

I’m running the Utah Valley half marathon – it’s my PR target for the year. My boyfriend is doing the full. I’m super excited it looks like such a pretty (and fast) course.

Reply

I ran this marathon in 2012 and LOVED IT! I have to admit though my own personal favorite (so far) for the scenery in Utah is the Ogden Marathon. If you haven’t already done this race, you really should once, you won’t be disappointed.

Reply

My next race is next month, I actually have 3 next month…make a mistake of signing up for several at a time without seeing the dates on my calendar. Oh well, May will be more low key.

I cannot wait to hear how you do : )

Reply

That looks like a beautiful race course!
My next race is in the middle of May. I’m easing back into training but I think I’ll be ready for half marathon #7 :)
Karen @karenlovestorun

Reply

You should totally run Ogden Marathon sometime, Janae.
My next race is as part of a relay team at the Ogden Marathon! I have the one hill on the whole course in my leg.
I’m a newbie to this whole running thing but I could probably do a half in 13 weeks — maybe I should trek down to Provo!

Reply

I just ran my first half yesterday and didn’t die! PR of course ;)

I have a special request for you if you see this and are at all able to help!! I teach third grade in a rural county of NC, and to work on global awareness since most of them haven’t ever left the state, we are doing a postcard project. We’re trying to collect postcards from all 50 states, and we’re still missing Utah!! Would it be at all possible for you to send us a postcard?? It would make them SO HAPPY because it’s one of the only states we have left, and it would mean the world to me ’cause you’re kind of a big deal!

If you (or anyone else reading this…) can help me out, just email me and I’ll send you the address!!

Reply

I don’t have any races lined up at the moment. I was going to run a St. Patrick’s day race next weekend, but then decided against it, so now I’ll just have to find a goal race for the fall for post-baby.

My rest day this week was Sunday.

Reply

So now I want to do that marathon! I’ve never done one (just accomplished my first half!) but maybe in the future sometime? So beautiful and I can’t believe that’s the weather in June…

Reply

Beautiful. Utah is on my list of states I really want to visit. I’ve come to realize apart from my swimming days I haven’t traveled much. April I am going to Colorado and I cannot contain my excitement much longer.

Sundays are generally my rest days. Yesterday I laid in bed reading until 1pm…!

Reply

my next race is a 200 mile relay in South Carolina called the Palmetto 200!

Reply

My rest day was from Friday until Sunday, I was sick all weekend and it was such a bummer but I feel so much better! Brooke looks like a toddler so much in these pictures! My next race is in May, which I am pretty excited about!

Reply

I would love to runcation this one – unfortunately, that is my wedding day and I doubt anyone would be pleased if I postponed it for a race…I’m already doing a half in Hawaii on my honeymoon… PRIORITIES :)

Reading about Utah valley almost made me cry, and not in a good way. I ran it in 2011 (I’m in the closing shot of the video with my speedy friends as we took the women’s team competition). But I was trying to break 3:30 to get the 10 minute buffer for Boston. I stayed with or ahead of the 3:30 pacer the whole time, but I knew a few miles from the finish it probably wasn’t going to happen based on my garmin. I kept fighting and finished well in front of the pacer and still finished in 3:30:55. I burst in to tears as soon as I saw my time. This was already my second attempt In a few months to get the 10 minute buffer for Boston (I bonked at salt lake marathon in April) and I was sure I would not get into Boston. I was sure my husband who had the buffer would get in and I would have to go just a spectator. But luckily the standards weren’t as hard as I expected and I easily got in with my 9 minute buffer and thoroughly enjoyed running in the hottest ever year and totally didn’t care that my time was pathetic. I think I may be scarred for life by that Utah valley experience and I refute their claim to be the fastest course in the state. All those hill in the middle make it much slower than my all time favorite and hometown course of St George. But maybe one of these years I’ll give it another shot (maybe after I get the 3:18 I’m shooting for this year at St George).

My next race that I have planned so far is the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill hat trick in June but I am SUPER CRAZY EXCITED that I will also be doing the CHICAGO MARATHON!!!!!!! I will be running with Dance Marathon the Marathon from the University of Iowa where I am a student. Dance Marathon has raised over 14.5 MILLION dollars to provide emotional and financial support for pediatric cancer and bone marrow transplant patients treated at the U of I hospital. Each of us runners will train together and raise a minimum of $1,000 each. If you would like more information or to donate feel free to email me :)

My next race is The Windsor Half Marathon in Windsor, CA. In the heart of Sonoma wine country, a beautiful route. I’ve ran 2 previous halfs and neither were particularly successful. Really sticking to a vigorous running schedule to make sure I”m prepared.

Reply

What a pretty marathon course! If I could handle hills and elevation, it would be on my running bucket list! However, since I live below sea level with no hills (New Orleans), I would probably die if I tried to run that race! I spent Christmas in Breckenridge and just walking up the stairs winded me because of the elevation… pitiful I know!

Reply

I’ll have to keep that race on my list for ‘someday’, looks gorgeous there. Last week my rest day was Wednesday, we got hit with another snow storm and had 16″ of snow. My desire to do ANYTHING was non-existent.

Ive run Steamboat Springs, CO and I really do believe there is nothing like a mountain race! They’re magical!

My next race is the Warwick Half Marathon. I think the is the first time I am going into a race with the possibility of finshing in the top 10% of runners so gonna give it my all. Unfortunately a minor injury means I can do no running for the week before the race… but at least it forces me to take a break!

I’m so tempted to do that half! Just so afraid that I won’t be able to get to the half distance by then! And also, even though it’s not TOO far, don’t want to drive that far =\ haha. And I’m trying to figure out my work schedule, since I’ll be working weekends, and my boyfriend and I are planning on camping quite a bit this summer… it’s going to be hard to schedule stuff around work =( BOO! I need to make money from home =(

I am REALLY considering making the Utah Valley Marathon my FIRST marathon…just haven’t decided if we will be in UT that early. If I don’t run that, I will be running the American Fork Canyon Half the next weekend.
