Triathletes, I just don’t know how you do it.

I really don’t know how you triathletes do it.  This morning I did 30 minutes of spinning with the sister-in-law followed by 8 miles of running.  My legs were jello the second I got off of the bike.  I can’t even imagine running a long distance after swimming AND biking.  Basically I am clapping for all of you out there that do triathlons and brick workouts all of the time.   PS back in the day (ummmm 7 years ago) I used to do sprint triathlons but any more than that and I don’t think I could handle it.

I am only here for another day so we are trying to fit in all of our traditions before I leave.

One of my favorite traditions——>  soft pretzels from the gas station (I know, I know.. it is a super classy gas station though) at 10 a.m.

IMG 8902

We hit up the Phoenix Zoo and Brooke was more interested in all of the birds/ducks than the ginormous animals.  I need to find an aviary to take her to.

IMG 8892

And the hardest workout of my day was pushing the three kiddos around.  My guns are going to be huge after doing this.

IMG 8897

Tangent:  I am really thinking about getting one of these for me and Brooke.

Blog friend turned to real life friend came with us and it was a real good time.

Ham, tomato, avocado and grilled cheese for lunch.  Great combination if you ask me.

PS while in Arizona I have been forced to eat a lot of ice cream in order to keep my body temperature nice and cool.  Another really tough part about coming to visit my brother.

It is definitely not that hard to do a triathlon – you just learn how to pace on the bike so that you can run efficiently after.

That, and a really good bike fit helps.

You could do it, if you wanted to!

They dont call them bricks for nothing — it’s crazy!

I wouldn’t mind moving to AZ so I could use that ‘cooling my body temp down’ with ice cream excuse allll the time! ;) haha.

I’ve done a Half Ironman–it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done b/c yes, my legs were DONEZO before I even began running the leg portion (a half marathon). So hard, so fun. And never doing again. haha!

Last flavor of ice cream I had -snickerdoodle. It’s yumm!

I’m doing my second tri this June. But it’s a unique one (in the Cincinnati area). You kayak 6 miles, run 5.5 miles, then bike 18 miles. I LOVE that the biking is after the running! It’s a lot of fun.
Last ice cream flavor I ate (this week, the entire pint) was toffee chocolate chip. So very good!
I’m getting ready to run 2 miles outside in prep for my first 15K this weekend-yikes! Slowly working up to a 1/2…maybe :)
Glad you are having fun at your brother’s!

I bought some calf sleeves using your code last week. They came in time for me to use them for recovery after my 12 miler Saturday and were really wonderful. I’m doing a Ragnar trail relay this summer, so I bought the orange pair with the Ragnar logo. My husband thought they were the goofiest things he’d ever seen, but he’s not a runner so his opinion on this doesn’t count, right?

I’ve done two Olympic distance tris and was pretty miserable, yet I really want to do an Ironman…I must be crazy.

Last flavor of ice cream was cookie dough!

Reply

I’ve done sprint and olympic tris. I always feel like I am with a good friend once I make it to the run.

Last ice cream flavor is I got a Shamrock shake after work today. I always have to do that once.

Phoenix Zoo is great, we have a membership there and take the kids, and yes pushing the kids around is a great workout. Did you take the kids to the new butterfly wonderland?

Triathlon – I applaud them as well, never done one, want to do the sprint triathlon
Workout Today – 2 mile trail run, then 4 mile recovery run tonight
Ice Cream – Last flavor was chocolate chip cookie dough, my favorite

I’ve seen those strollers before! I actually saw one once where the platform was on the side so the other child could stand on it while the parent pushed both of their children! It looked so strange to me at first but after thinking about it for a while, it’s a pretty cool invention!

FYI…there is an Aviary at Liberty Park in SLC. The Tracy Aviary. But, beware… I was running there the other day, and it didn’t smell very good when I ran past it :\ Although out of the hundreds of times that I have ran that loop, that’s the first time it’s smelled bad. So… take your chances, I guess? :)

I did a sprint tri last summer, wasn’t my cup of tea. I’ll stick to running :) oh, and I just have to say I LOVE Arizona!!

Reply

This speaks to me on so many levels. I cannot even imagine running a marathon after swimming and biking. Ironmans are crazy.

My favorite flavor of ice cream is cake batter…really I just like cake.

Reply

i bet you could do it! ya’ll come do a training camp here! xxoo I’ll cook.

Reply

I’ve never done a triathlon — maybe someday! :)

Reply

My “workout” today consisted of racing in and out the door, up and down a ladder and up and down the stairs trying to liberate a trapped bird. Not sure who was more freaked out. That’s a lie…I’m sure the poor bird was.

I’m doing my third tri this summer. I HATE the swim. The whole way round I’m saying to myself “I’m going to drown, I’m going to drown, oh god it’s so far, please don’t let me drown”. So once I’m out of the lake I have a huge smile on my face and the rest of the way I’m so happy that I keep saying to myself “I didn’t drown! I’m still alive! I can do anything!”
It doesn’t matter that there’s barely anyone behind me, just finishing that swim makes me love the rest of the triathlon!

No ice cream for months as it’s still winter here in London but I love Ben & Jerrys Phish Food!

Reply

No way for the triathlons. I would die when it came to swimming. I literally would drown. Can’t swim. Hate water (except to drink and shower in)

Um QT pretzels, yes please. I loved QT when I lived there. Miss them. I would agree about them being a high class gas station. They r the cleanest gas station too.

That scooter stroller looks super fun!

I am so jealous of all that warm sunshine I cannot see anything else. So glad you had a great trip with your brother! You deserve to relax and have fun.

Triathlon<3

The run is my strength just because I've been running for 13+ years, but I love it all. It's so exciting always having the shake up mid race. Plus brick workouts make your muscles so efficient!

Ironman Chattanooga 2015, here I come!

Reply

Its in the 70s here today! First time I’ve been able to run in shorts since last fall.

I couldn’t do a triathalon because I really don’t like swimming…

Reply

I’m glad you mentioned the give-away as I missed it when you previously talked about it. AND… I am loving the one pair of Pro Compression Marathon socks that I have been wearing the last 4-6 weeks on my “long runs” during my half marathon training and simply MUST have another pair to wear on all my runs. AND, I was hoping they would make them in orange to match my visor and my running shoes and THEY DO! :) :) So I get new socks and get entered in a give-away. Awesome!

I would never, ever EVER become a triathlete. Hate to bike and don’t really love swimming. Just running. Enough challenges there to just stick with running. And, you can’t wear the cute Pro Compression socks in the pool now can you? :)

I am currently training for Ironman 70.3 Boise and completely understand that feeling of jello legs. I always feel like a wobbly duck when I dismount the bike and start the run. I think this get’s better with training and experience with bricks – at least I hope so! My favorite leg would be the run, then bike, then…. um, then…. swim. my excitement about the swim is nonexistent. Long term goal is Ironman AZ!

Reply

Triathlons are really tough but fun!!! I have done 2 triathlons and it is definitely tiring in completely different way than running. I participated in intercollegiate swimming in college so the swimming part was easy to me. It was .62 of a mile in a lake and I was second in my age group after swimming. However, during the biking…I definitely dropped back several spots. Biking is completely different from running! I need to build up strength in it somehow. How do you get faster in biking?! The jello leg feeling hits hard in the triathlon after getting off the bike. Transitions are hard too because you are being timed when you are changing, putting on shoes, getting on the bike, etc.

My workout today was great. A 3 mile run at an 8:42 pace in warm weather, finally!

Reply

I did a kids triathlon when I was like 8, but I have kind of wanted to do another one for a while now… the lake swimming with hundreds of people around me scares me though. I would love to do the running part of a team one ;)

Have a safe trip back to Utah!

I have never done a triathlon before but it is on my bucket list one of these days! :) I am very jealous of your ice cream and soft pretzels – they both look DELICIOUS!

Reply

Omg when we were in Whistler, BC last summer it was when the Ironman was going on and we watched the bike to run transition and I couldn’t even fathom it. They did a 180km bike ride and then had to run a full marathon, after they swam in open water. It was so inspiring.

Reply

A few years ago, I got this great idea that maybe I should do an Ironman, but then I remembered that I’m a terrible swimmer and don’t enjoy biking :) soooo running it is! Last Friday, I accidentally ate 2/3 of a half-gallon (yes, you read that right…it was not a pint) of salted caramel gelato. And I didn’t regret it.

Reply

That pretzel looks AWESOME & I am instantly craving a soft pretzel!!! No triathalons for me…I agree with that whole I have no idea how you do it!!!! I am not a swimmer…I bike sometimes, but like the ride my bike with my kids kind of biking :).
Ice cream= vanilla with hot fudge…last night :)

Ughh Janae you are SO amazing!
I’v been reading your blog for two years and you were the reason I began running, because you weren’t just some girl who was trying to lose weight, but a crazy, funny human being and great mom.
You actually even inspired me to start a blog for my P.E project, so I did it about running. http://hungryteenrunner.blogspot.com
Love you, great job with everything as always

Rest day for me today, I just took the pooch for a walk.

Last ice cream that I had was coconut cream pie flavor – I liked the ice cream but could have done without the “crust” chunks it had in it.

Reply

I did a tri once and I was WIPED. I had a duathlon yesterday and was totally unprepared for the jelly legs. I definitely trained properly…

A tri would kill me! Road racing all the way :)

Six miles outside with the sunrise. Nursing a strained hammy, but slowly feeling better! Last flavor of ice cream was Publix brand red velvet cake — delicious!!

Reply

I did triathlons pre-baby and can’t wait to be able to train for them again!! My legs always felt really weird transitioning from bike to run. The bike was my favorite part. 8 miles after spinning is awesome!! My workout today was in the garage with the door open so, inside/outside?? I had some delicious chocolate coconut milk ice cream for dessert tonight.

You went to QT!!!! I grew up in AZ (recently moved to MI) and as we were driving across the country on our move, I had to stop at every QT along the way. I knew MI wouldn’t have them. :( There is no convenience store quite like it, and I am with you on the pretzels :) Glad you’re having fun, but I wouldn’t trade MI for that heat any day. lol

Reply

Ive never done a triathlon and don’t think I could because I am a terrible swimmer! I ran outside this morning and it was close to 40 degrees, which is really warm compared to how its been!

OMG, Janae, I found the Ben & Jerry’s Cores! The hazelnut one is amazing! So good, that was the last ice cream I ate.

BTW I am running a Pro Compression sock giveaway as well. Go to my blog @ wp.me/p4fmQC-68

Hmm last flavor of ice cream was last week when I had both mint and bull tracks. Why pick just one?! :) Glad you’re having a great time in Arizona! Play date when you get back!

I don’t know how triathletes do it either. I did the bike for a bit today and it totally smoked my quads as usual. What would really get me is the swim though, I’ve never done any sort of distance swimming.

Reply

I ran 5 miles outside this morning around the neighborhood. Oh, and then I ran from my husband at the store so that he wouldn’t see the insane amount of money I was spending…that probably doesn’t count though does it?

Reply

Looks like your having a great time! I would love to go out to Arizona!
I am going to do a triathlon one day, hopefully soon!!

Reply

No triathlons for me. I ran a quick three miles before picking up my kids from school. The last ice cream I ate was blueberry (yum!).

Reply

That ice cream, now I’m craving some!

Your blog makes me laugh, you and your family are a breath go fresh air!
I’ve done 4 ironmans, and taking a break this year and training for a marathon in May. The best part is the run. No triathletes really love the swim.
Did crossfit this am inside. Mint chocolate chip my favorite! Have a great trio back home!

Reply

I have never done a tri before, but I totally want to! I got a bike last year but have only taken it out a couple times because I started marathon training in November. I also want to do the Hotter ‘n Hell 100, which is a 100 mile bike race in Wichita Falls, TX every August when it is sweltering hot. I’ve been a spectator there twice, and it looks really fun!

No working out today, just stretching and foam rolling. Getting ready for my half marathon this weekend!! Sooooo excited :)

Last ice cream flavor I had was just plain old vanilla. I know, I’m boring. I need to hit up my favorite froyo shop this weekend while I’m in VA Beach though so I can load up on some topping goodness after the race!

Enjoy the rest of your vacay in AZ :) I’m jealous.

Reply

Nice use of your new workout clothes :)

I ate an entire half gallon of vanilla in 4 days last week. Loaded with shell magic, of course. :)

Reply

oh my gosh I could NOT do triathlons- my legs would be dead! running by itself is tough enough :)

Before I had kids I used to do sprint triathlons. My local tri club was a great place where I made lots of friends. I love the bike but too many of my friends had terrible accidents so I’m scared of riding on roads (especially here in Sydney- the roads are shocking, as are the drivers). I do miss the bike sometimes…and its true that most Aussies love to swim. But I’ll always love running best.

Reply

i’m training for my first tri. I did a duathlon this weekend and loved it. The bike is my favorite part b/c the miles go by so fast!

Reply

I’m am petrified of water, so I’ll never do a triathlon.

Workout today was inside: me on the treadmill constantly spelling words for my six-year-old so he could write a paper about snakes (not for school, for his own enjoyment). Spelling AND treadmilling works out brain and brawn! :)

Reply

I feel like I could handle a triathlon if the run was first…I love running but I think the other two are easier for me and I could do them (slowly) after running

Reply

my favorite kind is rocky road…so yummy

Reply

I have no interest in swimming aside from floating around a pool during the summer so maybe a duathlon? :)

Reply

Did a treadmill run inside and then realized it had warmed up to 50 degrees outside, which is basically a heat wave in the mitten state right now!

Reply

Is there a website for that skateboard/stroller contraption? Looks so cool!

Reply

I am doing an ironman in May! I’m terrified out of my mind because up til now I’ve only done Olympic triathlons. Training my butt off and trying to live a balanced life at the same time. This weekend I biked 59 miles, swam two miles, and ran 10 miles in attempt to train my body for lots of back to back. You have been a huge inspiration for me! And I just made a huge home made pizzookie with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream on top :)

Reply

I could never do a triathlon… I am pretty sure I would drown. The open swim scares the mess out of me. A duathlon is much more my style.

Reply

I have little desire to do a triathlon – mostly because I just LOVE to run, but also because I have a hard time just walking after biking. I don’t know how people can run fast after biking!

Reply

Take Brooke to the Tracy Aviary at liberty Park in SLC!! She’d love it.

Reply

I would love to do a triathlon…it is a goal of mine. My workout today was crossfit…burpee box jumps and shoulder to overheads in the WOD today.

Reply

I had the same lunch as you today too! Mine was so delicious and they are certainly an awesome combination!

I haven’t done a triathlon before but my running coach does them. I think he is amazing! He can swim, bike and then run. I am usually so tired after running that I could never imagine swimming and riding a bike beforehand. I would love to do something like a triathlon, however I’m not a very good swimmer as I’m scared of very deep water, so I don’t think I’d be any good at it.

I’m about to go head off on my work out – time for a run outside! It’ll be some running drills and then some 1km pace runs. Should be fun!

I can’t remember the last time I had ice cream! But the last time I had froyo it was a combination of vanilla, chocolate and original – I couldn’t choose just one flavour!

Reply

I’ve done one triathlon before but I have BIG goals of being an Ironman triathlete one day :) My favorite part of the tri is the run…probs because I was a runner first!

Last flavor of ice cream I had…chocolate caramel praline by Haagen Daz! Definitely recommend!

Reply

I admire triathletes so much…I have no idea how they do it. Maybe one day, I’ll challenge myself to complete one…but right now marathons are all I have on my mind.

The last flavor of icecream I had was applie pie!!!!

Reply

I love, love, love all of the pictures you take. Your life always looks so fun!

I tri! Well, I tri-train. I have been much more consistent with training than actual racing. I’ve done several, but the training is my favorite part.

Ahhh, my favorite part is the bike. It’s the most challenging to me, since I have to constantly gauge where my energy levels are, and I get a chance to get in nutrition for however long I’m on the bike.

I swam yesterday inside (looking forward to the outdoor 50 meter pool at the park near my home! C’mon summer!). I’m running outside today, easy threesie, IN SHORTS…IN SHORTS IN SHORTS IN SHORTS, I SAY!

Harry and I had date night at a local brew-pub last night. We had one of their signature taps-inspired ice cream…porter ice cream. Mmmmm…

Reply

It’s supposed to be in the 50s today, so I definitely think I’ll get in an workout outside. Woohoo!!

I don’t think I could ever do a tri, mostly because I’m a terrible swimmer and really hate biking.

Reply

I think the last flavor of ice cream I had was plain vanilla. Not really plain though ’cause it was piled on top of one of those big chocolate restaurant desserts. Yum!

Weird fact: I will never do a triathlon because: a. I am a horrible swimmer and b. I CAN’T RIDE A BIKE. Nope. I did it as a kid but not for a long period of time and when I tried again as an adult I just couldn’t do it. I think it’s my balance. I made the mistake of telling my trainer this and now she has me doing everything either standing on a bosu or on one foot or something for balance.

Reply

I once did a half ironman. It did NOT go well. It turns out “swimming” is nothing like “running in the water” —> I did not do much training. IT WAS TERRIBLE. The boat men were following me in rafts and asking if I wanted to get out(so embarrassing).

Reply

My friend is training for her first half ironman this spring. I am so impressed, I don’t know how she does it. I ran a 5k race on Saturday then biked home (about a mile) and my legs were JELLO. It was pitiful!

Reply

I love that little stroller/longboard combo! I think I’d die laughing seeing it in person though. I’m trying to think of a clever name for it…strollboard??? ehhh, too boring…what is it called?

Reply

I am tired just from thinking about a triathlon, haha.

Reply

I have done many tris and am training for my first ironman this year. I absolutely LOVE the sport. I like all 3 parts equally but wish I was a better biker. Working on it though! My workout today was a 2500yd swim followed by a 45min run. Can’t remember the last time I ate ice cream, but it was probably vanilla or chocolate chip. They don’t sell Blue Bell here in Minnesota either, so I don’t generally buy anything else. I get my Blue Bell fix when I visit family in Texas.

Reply

Maple Bacon Doughnut froyo. Way too bacon-y. And Chai Tea Spice froyo which was a little odd but not bad. I’ll stick with my pistachio with thin mints on top. My froyo spot also has cupcake middles from the cupcake shop down the street. Score!

Reply

Hi! New to your blog and am LOVING it!

I’ve done a few Half-Ironman races and two full Ironmans. Am training for my next full Ironman – Couer D’Alene, in June! So, yes, brick workouts are a big part of training! You get used to it though. In fact, I find I run faster off the bike now! Maybe that’s what a 112 mile warm up will do for you :-).

Reply

Yeah I don’t think I could ever do a full triathlon…I’m thinking about POSSIBLY doing a sprint triathlon this summer but we’ll see…

That stroller is awesome! I would totally use that. Need to bookmark for when I need such a thing in a few years ;)

Reply

I’ve never done a triathlon or a sprint one, but a few friends are trying to talk me into one…we’ll see! The swimming part does scare me a little though :)

Reply

I LOVE triathlons!! My favorite is probably the Olympic distance (a little longer than a sprint) because it’s not too long to kill you and not as short as a sprint so you have to go ALL-OUT the whole time.
My favorite part is probably the run- since I’m a runner. Plus, when you get to the run it means you’re almost done! haha!!
I’m doing an outside track workout today- they are brutal! (I wish you could join!! ;))
