Brooke is training for a triathlon

My friend just sent me this picture.  Yes and yes x 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.

To go along with the above picture, I loved reading Running as Therapy in The New York Times.

This was my favorite part:

So this is now happening.

IMG 9497

Brooke runs around all day long, now she is biking and I will set up the kiddy pool soon—>  She will pretty much do brick workouts all summer long.  Triathlons here we come;)

(I am training Brooke from the very beginning that helmets are necessary when riding any type of bike)

IMG 9493

I think the best part about the bike is that it comes with a basket to carry Brooke’s (okay, let’s be honest… my) snacks.

IMG 9500

Toms= comfort at its finest.  I have my eye on these ones.  A good friend sent me Brooke’s Toms when I was pregnant and they finally fit… I have been waiting for this moment for a long time.

IMG 9501

Getting up this morning for a run just didn’t happen.  I was exhausted and so I decided to run during Brooke’s nap time.  12 miles in 55 degree weather.

 IMG 9507

Today’s run was the opposite of fun (I don’t think my body understands how to run at any time other than early morning) but at least it was gorgeous out.

I’m getting another knee surgery in 4 days and I ran this morning because of SO much emotion. Now, I feel at least 70% better. Seriously.

Reply

I am so sorry that you have to get another knee surgery!!

Reply

I have a TON to do tonight, so I won’t be getting a run in until tomorrow morning, which is a bummer.

I ADORE Tom’s but they make my feet sweat to an embarrassing degree. But I just love the way they look!

Running is DEFINITELY therapeutic for me. Nothing is better after a crazy day than a nice run.

Reply

Good luck getting everything done tonight and enjoy your run tomorrow.

Hey Natalie, I have the same sweaty foot problem with TOMS, but now I just buy these little dress shoe liner type socks and that takes care of the problem! The socks absorb the sweat so that they don’t get into the shoes and smell.

Here they are in case you want to give it a try ;)

Oh awesome! Thank you!!

Reply

oh my gosh Brooke’s Toms!! I LOVE them! I have quite a few pairs, but right now my favorite are Classic Red.

Running is my therapy. It keeps me balanced and sane. I love that little quote you shared.

I’m with you about morning runs – when I run any other time than in the morning, my body just isn’t feeling it.

Reply

I have the red ones too and they are my favorite. What is up with our bodies… don’t they know that we should be able to run happily any time of day?

Reply

Tri training already, that is awesome. I agree with the helmet thing, we do that with our kidos as well. The weather looked amazing for your run.

Run Details – Been nursing an ankle injury so I am itching to get out there and run tonight. Should be 90 today so it will be warm when I run later. Any day running is a great day :)
Therapeutic – Exremely, any problems or stress I have throughout the day is gone after I pound out some miles.

Get that ankle better asap! WOW… it is already crazy hot where you are!

Reply

Yeah ankle feels good today, plan to run tonight.

You just left my lovely state of AZ. It was a beautiful high of 84 today. Without a winter for us it is only going to get hotter lol.

Reply

Love TOM’s! My favorites are red.

Reply

I have the burlap toms and LOVE them! They do not disappoint ;) I get compliments all the time and you really can wear them with anything!

Reply

I read that running as therapy article too and it resonated big time.
I even completed the same marathon she trained for.

Running is sooooo my therapy.

Today was a rest day. I had a good 10 miler Saturday and a so so 4 yesterday.
Tomorrow 6 but since I’m running during my lunch break I might have to shave it down to 5 so I don’t end up fired. lol.

I’ve never worn toms. They look comfy. Do they have cushioning or do you feel rocks under? Gosh I sound like the princess and the peace lol.

Reply

Todays run was an easy run after a tough one on Sat. Sat I did 3 warm up, 5 at 1/2 marathon 12 seconds faster than goal pace (6:40) , 3 cool down..no break in-between anything. Today was 7 easy (8:35) miles. Today was 32 degrees, Sat was 68! Sat was nice!!!!
I have never tried on Toms…they look cute but don’t that look comfy….are they?

Reply

What type of bike is that? I have an 18 month old who I think would love riding something like that! I love my Toms. I have black burlap ones and need a new pair. I’m dying for warmer weather so that I can wear them daily.

Reply

My run was great today! I’m almost done with the couch to 5k and still injury free. (fingers crossed) I have black Toms but I want more colors. Does anyone know how to wash them??

Reply

I use a damp cloth to wipe them and that has worked well for my red canvas ones. I finally had to just throw my silver sparkly ones in the wash on gentle. I’ve actually done it twice and I’ve had them for 2 years and they’re finally falling apart.

Reply

The next pair of shoes I buy will be my first pair of Toms. I’m kinda lucky in having small feet so I can buy a lot of kids shoes. They’re so much cheaper that way!

Reply

This is TOO weird. I JUST made that picture my Facebook cover photo this weekend!!! LOVE that!

Reply

I love Toms! I would just recommend that you not get the burlap ones; I bought them a few years back and they only lasted about a month before the fibers started to come apart (unweave? unwind?). I could have had a dud pair, though.

Reply

I have navy “Toms loves Moms” Toms that I love. :)

Reply

Today’s run was awesome. 2 fast miles on the treadmill and then 5 easy miles with the hubs.
I <3 Toms. I have black and silver sparkles and red :) Love them, especially on baby feet!
Running is seriously therapy at its finest. I started running because I honestly didn't know what to do with myself (PPD) and I haven't stopped since and I was pregnant over 5 years ago.

Reply

Toms are adorable but my feet need more support.

Reply

I totally use the excuse that these snacks are ‘for my kids’ when really I usually end up eating them. oops.

Your run definitely looked gorgeous, sorry it was less than stellar….even though your pace and distance ARE definitely stellar. My run was 5.5 miles on a treadmill at the gym in the early am. Big Buddha was there this morning filming a segment and I am just glad they didn’t do a segment in the cardio room. I do not want to be on the news running with my pink face and huge belly. lol. But no hurting or stopping to pee today, yay! I still am planning on getting that band though. Thanks again so much for the info.

I own 3 pairs of knock off toms. 2 are from payless and 1 is Roxy. I am so cheap. Ross calls them my ‘Ellen’ shoes cause he think they look like something she would wear ;) My mom literally owns 39 pairs of Toms. It is ridiculous.

Enjoy the rest of your day! It is supposed to be gorgeous today and tomorrow. Yippee!!

Reply

I do not own any Toms, can you believe it? I really like your striped ones, though. I’d like to get some for spring–maybe a neutral metallic.

When I am stressed, I NEED to run. At first, I was going to say there are no negative side effects from running, unlike most medications, but then I remembered the number of times I’ve been injured from running :)

Reply

I’m running tonight. I was going to wait until tomorrow because my maternity support belt should be here by then but we are plunged back into winter tomorrow. One more uncomfortable run before the belt comes to save my life (hopefully)

Reply

Ive been looking at some super funky tye dye watercolory toms. I love shoes.

Reply

Not a TOMS fan but I don’t wear flats much unless they’re running shoes. My run was COLD today, it was only 24!! Not okay for the end of March if you ask me.

Reply

OMG those little Toms! I can’t get enough of them!

Reply

Oh those little itty bitty TOMS are so cute!!!

No run for me today–taught 2 fitness classes instead! I am loving this weather though :)

Reply

Today is a rest day, supposed to be strength training, but you know I’m taking advantage of the fact that nap time actually happened and blogging/emailing/FB’ing/pinteresting instead. I ran 12 on Saturday and was out and about at the park all day yesterday, so I don’t feel bad about how the day is going.

I love Toms and have them in white with black polka-dots and hunter green, but sadly the more I run, and the further I run the less and less I can wear them. Even in my down time my feet just need a little more support than Toms offer. :( If it’s a dinner date with the hubby and we won’t be walking around much I put them on, but I can’t wear them daily.

Is there any other therapy than running?! I don’t know what I’d due without my solo runs to clear my mind and not be “on” for anyone other than myself. On the flip side if I didn’t have my running friends/group runs to help me talk through stuff I don’t know what I’d do.

Reply

Love that you have Brooke wearing a helmet so young! I’m definitely a helmet person, as in I ask for one whenever I am doing something that might be remotely dangerous :) and I’m always tempted to yell at high school kids not wearing them.

And I totally agree about the body only being ready to run at one time of day, switching it up and running in the afternoon (instead of morning) almost always means an awful run for me.

Reply

Mondays are usually a run day for me, but for the next month I am doing an intensive barre workout streak!

I don’t have TOMS but I want some!

Running is so therapeutic and mood balancing for me. It got me through a difficult divorce.

Reply

It was a balmy 9 degrees when I ran this morning (doesn’t Boston know it’s spring?!?!) but the easy 7 miles felt great despite the cold! My favorite time of day to run is early morning :)

Reply

I’ve taken yesterday and today off of running. Ironman is in less than six weeks. I needed a couple days to re-gather myself for these last few weeks of hard training. Your run looked gorgeous!

Reply

No run for me today, just a Body Pump class and a killer leg workout. It kills me not to run because it is gorgeous here, but I am running a half marathon on Saturday and sticking with my plan, no matter how much I want to get out there!

Reply

Running is definitely my therapy. It instantly makes me feel better every time. No Toms for me though…I can never find them in my size (a very narrow size 5). But they look adorable!

Reply

Since I’ve been pregnant, Monday’s have been an off day for me… I’m too pooped to move after work. But I’m looking forward to a good run tomorrow!

Love your Toms! I might have to get my first pair this Spring :)

Reply

No run today, I’m still super sore from my half on Saturday, plus I had to work for 10 hours today.

I haven’t ever tried Toms, some of them are pretty cute though.

Running is totally therapeutic! It definitely helps clear my head and de-stress.

Reply

I find any sort of workout therapeutic! Swimming, biking, running, weights, yoga, a class. Anything that gets my heart rate up makes me happy! :)

You get to see the prettiest views on your runs!!

Reply

Dont hate me but I think tom’s shoes are ugly. Im sorry!can we still be friends? But they are really cute on Brooke. Ive never worn a pair. Are they super comfortable or something?

Running is such good therapy for me too. I like the idea that you are running to something. What a positive way to look at it!

Reply

I used to think they were hideous, but I saw them all the time and I guess they grew on me. I think they’re very comfortable, they’re practically the only shoes I wear!

Reply

Thank you so much for having Brooke wear a helmet and talking about it on your blog. Lots of people look up to you so shedding light on an important safety issue is so great! I work with a lot of kids who have Traumatic Brain Injuries, some of them sustained during bike or even sledding accidents. It’s surprising how many parents don’t make their kids wear helmets. Thank you times a million!

Reply

Running is SO therapeutic. I took off from running today and went to body pump. I also struggle with running any time other than the morning. And Toms are the best!

Reply

I totally agree with you about runs – I’m all about the morning ones. I actually just read an article in Self (the one with Julianne Hough on the cover) saying that because of hormones in your body, we’re actually primed to run at night / after being awake all day, and will run better then.

Not sure if I believe it haha…or maybe I’m an exception?

Reply

“but it couldn’t rain on me if I kept moving” — I don’t know that I’ve ever agreed with anything more. Wow, thank you so much for sharing that! Also my run was too cold and I’m obsessed with Toms (traditional and in boot form!)

Reply

I have navy Toms. Baby (big girl) Toms are adorable!

Reply

I do find running therapeutic and I’m a little bummed that my calf is acting up – hopefully short lived!!! Pretty much if I don’t run first thing in the morning, it doesn’t happen – I’m always impressed that you still make it work!

Reply

I have the same toms you do, the striped ones. I haven’t worn them in awhile. I need to pull them out.

I’m gearing up for a warm run in the sunshine tonight. I have been the laziest runner recently, I really need to get back on the bandwagon!

Reply

I did a speedy HIIT run today and it felt great. Run fast, run strong :)

Reply

My running SUCKED today. I struggled to keep a 9 minute pace. I’m sore from all of last week. I have 3 pairs of toms…. love them! I’m so excited for the snow to leave so I can wear them!

Reply

You’re smart to get that helmet on Brooke now. If you waited until she was older she might not want it. Once it’s a habit, though….Clever mom!

Reply

I have the black sparkly Toms and also got the red sparkly ones when I was playing Dorothy in a Wizard of Oz themed safety skit at work (I wonder if that means I can write them off on my taxes as a business expense? Haha) plus a couple of the knockoff Bob’s (by Skechers) in sparkly chocolate brown and a kind of shiny-but-not-actually-sequined orange. Apparently they have to be blingy to find a home in my closet!

Reply

I ran this morning but I shouldn’t have, I am now forced to take some time off due to persistant hip pain. Rest is good right? I need to keep telling myself that because running IS MY THERAPY! Now, I’ll need to shop and since I already have 19 pairs of Tom’s, the hubby probably wouldn’t notice anymore, right?

Reply

I’m a running noob so each day I get out is like a baby step. Some days are better than others, but ultimately I am still doing it because it is good mental therapy. It’s also turning in to a tool for building my self esteem. I have to say mantras every day to remind myself that I can do it and that mentality is beginning to bleed over in to other areas of my life.
I don’t run mornings usually. I’m not a morning person so getting up with time to run before work just isn’t my thing. I also find that my energy level is soooo depleted in the morning. At least that is how I feel when I run early. So, I mostly go after work but on the weekend I try for earlier since that is when all the races are (and I’m signed up for 4 this spring). Today I did just a mile… A very hilly mile in 25 degrees. I feel great!
I don’t own a single pair of Toms.

Reply

Running is hugely therapeutic I think, and can help to strengthen our mental and emotional health in great ways. I didn’t run today, but I did an hour barre class (for myself- I’m a barre instructor) and I loved that!

Reply

You just might have a little tri-girl there! Brooke’s certainly looks like she loves her bike!

Is that tree blooming in the picture with your Garmin? If so, I’m so surprised at how much further along your spring is than ours in Virginia! We are expecting snow again tomorrow and I haven’t seen buds on anything yet.

Reply

How cute is Brooke in her little helmet?! Love it.
I love my toms. They are white and blue/grey metallic.
Running is my therapy. I couldn’t agree more. Especially on a perfect day.

Reply

Today’s run was decent, considering I felt sick before. Somehow, I pushed out 9 miles.

I LOVE this article that you shared about running as therapy. I just wrote a post today entitled “If I Lived the Way I Run.” It’s all about the fact that I’m the best “me” when I run, and if I could just transfer that attitude to my life, I think I’d be unstoppable. Read it, if you get a chance!

Reply

That picture with Brooke pointing is so cute! She looks so adorable, like a pro wrestler challenging me to a fight or something!

Reply

I ran tonight at 9pm. I only ran 4 miles and had great negative splits. Now it is 11pm and I am off to bed.

Reply

GIRL!! We have the same Garmin!! Soulmates!!
My workout was fantastic!! I ran 2 miles!!! and no knee pain!! I blogged about it if you’d like to stop over for a visit! ;)
http://zanetaruns.blogspot.com/2014/03/great-news-ffcheckin-and-awesome-workout.html
I LOVE that you and Brooke are matchy matchy with the Toms and that you’re teaching her the importance of helmets at an early age!! Super important lesson!! My brother had a serious bike accident and his helmet literally saved his life!! He still has it to teach people his lesson!

Reply

I love the Toms, but my feet are huge..so no go for me

I want to make running my anti-drug..or anti-badmood, etc….

Reply

I love TOMS! I’ve got ash gray ones, black ones, and silver glitter ones. My gray ones are working on a hole so it’s time to replace them, and I’m thinking of picking up a red pair while I’m at it. I love looking at all the different ones online, even if I’m only dreaming of having some of them.

I really should have run today, it was the warmest it has been all year. But work and kid stuff derailed my run plans so I stayed inside and Jillian almost killed me instead. Running is usually therapeutic for me but some days I just get into a funk and I don’t want to do ANYTHING but hide from the world. I need to work on that.

Reply

The quote from “Running for Therapy” totally resonated with me. Thanks for sharing!

Reply

That’s my favorite part too.

Reply

I went to high school with the girl who wrote the NYT article. Glad you enjoyed it too!

Reply

I had a great treadmill run tonight and felt like I could keep going but decided my roommate might hate me since it was 10:30 at night haha

Reply

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Toms but I need to branch out. Right now I only have grey and black and I am in desperate need of some new ones!

LOVE the color of Brooke’s Toms – adorable!

Reply

I started running after my 3rd child was born…to get away from it all. In turn it cured all of my postpartum depression. Now I enjoy it so much. Sometimes to escape but always feeling rejuvenated to be a better mom.

Reply

My Monday run (yesterday in Australia) was way more enjoyable than I expected it would be, which was the best! I didn’t time it because I felt super tired at the start but when settled into it i felt great and didn’t want to stop :)

I don’t have any Toms but they look really comfy, I want to order some!!

I find running really therapeutic, especially running at night after a long day.

Reply

I loved your post today. Running makes me a better person and is definitely my therapy. Unfortunately I tend not to run on the days I need it the most. Your little girl is absolutely adorable on her bike. She always looks so happy. You live in such a beautiful place – I think I’ve fallen in love with Utah.

Reply

I’ve always been a morning runner but have had to be flexible since the baby was born. I have to run whenever I can (he naps and/or child care is available). It has really taken its toll on my motivation but I have been working hard to regain it and not allow the time of day to take away my anti depressant.

Reply

I ALWAYS plan to run on Mondays but for some reason I always use it as my rest day. I’m not going to lie, Mondays are rough:/

I’m loving Tom’s and looking to find matching mommy n me ones for Ella and I for the Spring… IF Spring ever arrives.

If I didn’t run I would probably go insane… It allows me to clear my mind, make lists, think about my next blog, etc… and then when I walk through that door I’m a better Mommy, I’m a better wife, and I feel like a whole new person… If I don’t run, I feel “off” ya know?

Reply

I ran 7.5 on Monday, plan was for 6, but started out so slow that I needed to go further. Hoping to get in two short runs (5-6 miles) Weds and Friday to finish out the week without too much pain.

I love Toms, but mine do not look nearly as cute as Brooke’s! My faves are camo, but I also have black and gray plaid.

I bought chocolate chip Teddies for my daughter last week so we could “share” them. :)

Reply

Brooke is adorable on her little bike!!

I love Toms. I think I have four pairs, but my favorite are my giraffe print ones.

My Monday runs are usually pretty good because they are right after Sunday’s rest day. Yesterday, though, it was back to being insanely cold, so while I felt good, I couldn’t feel my hands or face.

Reply

Monday runs are usually pretty good. Yesterday’s run was hard, but I still plugged through and got in 5 miles before calling it a day.
Running is definitely my therapy. On good days, I feel like I can just float away while running. On bad days, I pound through my miles and release all of the anger and frustration. I feel so much better afterward.

Reply

Runnign is so therapeutic and energizing. I swear, even on the most exhausting days-a run wakes me right up and makes me feel at peace. Its odd how something that requires so much effort and is so high energy can also make me so relaxed and “zen”

Reply

Mondays are my rest day because I run twice (long and short) then Tuesday is speedwork, so I rest on Mondays. It was great since I went to see Divergent. Loved it!

Those baby Toms are adorable! I got my first pair a few months ago and was finally able to wear them. They’re navy with red roses – I got them on super cheap clearance from Nordstrom. They are soooo comfortable!

Sometimes I absolutely loathe running. But when I’m done, I love it! :)

Reply

So jealous that your trees are blooming and its looking and feeling like summer there. We are getting another snow storm tonight here in Boston-the Cape and Island could get up to a foot of snow! I want SPRING!!! I want to run in 55 degree weather!

Reply

Monday’s I do my crossfit class and I look forward to it.

Tom’s- I have a ton- brown tweed, black with purple polka dots, grey and beige. I might be slightly obsessed.

Running is most definitely therapeutic for me. Any exercise is really.

Reply

OMG that creek/river is gorgeous! Running is a lot of things for me, it just depends on the day- therapeutic, fun, that thing I look forward to the most, that thing I dread the most, my happy pill, etc.

Reply

Mondays are always rough for me. Probably because I get a lot of miles in on weekends (my days off work).
I’ve never work a pair of Tom’s before. I think they are so cute on everyone but me.
Running is definitely my anti-depressant and keeps me sane. People close to me know this. My 16yo daughter knows I am a better (or perfect) mom when I run :) Those that aren’t so close to me just think I am insane.

Reply

Obsessed with Tom’s! I have way too many to list colors ;) But I ADORE Brookes little guys :)

Reply

i’m currently taking a break from running due to health issues, but i agree that running is so therapeutic. there’s nothing like a runner’s high! i’ve found that walks are kinda my therapy right now, too.

i have pink sparkly toms and they always make me so happy when i wear them :)

Reply

If i dont make it for a run on a day that i am supposed too, i always end up feeling flat and down, its hard getting up at 5am and for me if i get up later and run i always for some reason have a reason to stop running half way through, my mind playing games :( but once i do run at my normal 5 am time, i always feel great afterwards and i feel fantastic for the whole day.

Reply

I am obsessed with Toms and have convinced myself I need them in every color!
Running is definitely therapeutic for me. It gives you time to just think and be alone with your thoughts.

Reply

I got my nephew TOMs when he was born too, too cute!!
