Training sure takes a lot of time.

Shown below:  What I looked like after the 12th 400.  The workout itself was hard but I think what really did me in was the heat.  I am pretty sure they had a heater up above me that followed me around the indoor track the entire time;)  We finished and I really just had to keep myself in the 400 that we were doing without thinking about having x more to go.

IMG 7608

We split the 12 into 3 sets of 4 and took a little bit longer jogging recovery in between sets (probably about 2-3 minutes).  After the second set we had to step outside for a 20 seconds to cool down and it felt amazing.

First Set:

1:26, 1:29, 1:29, 1:26

Second Set:

1:24, 1:22, 1:26, 1:23

Third Set:

1:19, 1:20, 1:21, 1:23

Yes, I am kicking myself that my last one wasn’t my fastest one… I am crazy about that kind of stuff.

We took turns leading each set.  Josse did the first set, Rebecca did the second and I took the third set.

And then we were all happy again for our cool-downs.  Thanks Jen for the picture!

I was so hot after this workout that I drove the 15 minutes home with the air conditioning on (and the seat heater because I like toasty buns) to try to cool off.

8 Minute Abs is back in my life again.   I have neglected my optimistic/cheesy ab training man for the last few months but I am bringing him back into my daily life.  I dare you to try it right now.

And then I spent 40 minutes stretching with THIS DVD while watching Parenthood.  There are no shortcuts when it comes to training hard.  9 miles + 8 minute abs + 40 minutes stretching = training the right way takes a lot of time and a lot of that time isn’t even running.

It’s my birthday month and so my really good friend (together since the 4th grade) took me for lunch.   I absolutely adore her.

How many hours do you spend a week running/cross-training/stretching/strength-training?

Were you hot, cold or just right during your workout today?

Oh man I think I do at least a few hours of strength/stretching/foam rolling each week but it’s just part of the process. Running alone is at least 10 hours a week but usually more. I was just right during my outdoor run today but indoors I’m always boiling hot!

Reply

I workout on average around 5 hours… I spend time eating about triple that

I was JUST thinking about how time consuming training can be! This is my first time doing a half marathon since Hunter (actually my first half marathon EVER!), and yes, it takes a lot of time and energy to make sure you’re doing everything correctly to stay strong and healthy. AKA stretching, foam rolling, strength training, and of course, running. I’m proud of myself for doing it the right way though, so it’s worth it to me. I just don’t know if I could be a hardcore runner (like you!) ALL the time. We’ll see … maybe I’ll get more and more addicted and then I won’t be able to stop. ;)

Reply

What a day for you seriously. I often feel that training is so time consuming but as I continue looking for a job I have that luxury. I am taking full advantage of it before I become employed again (hopefully soon).

I’ll have to try the 8 minutes abs…I’m always looking for new core workouts.

Reply

I spend probably 2 hours a day working out/stretching/icing, and about 10 hours a day thinking about it!!

I probably spend an average of 9 hours week between strength training and running. I am working to add more stretching. I’m finding it’s more and more necessary with the strength training to stretch more.

I used to hate strength training. But it’s growing on me. Running is my first exercise love, though. And always will be.

Reply

On work days, I spend my lunch time running/working out. It’s great to be able to fit it into the work day, but I have to do some more in the mornings or nights sometimes. It is very hard to train correctly with a full time job and a baby, but I’m trying to make it work. :)

That meal looks amazing!

What did you do in between each 400 in each set?

Reply

10 hours a week with a combination of all those things.

I am going to try 12×400 tomorrow. I bet you guys make the other runners dizzy around you.

My brother’s bday is the 28th.

I got hot because I had an extra modesty layer on for burpees. I had to shimmy out of it before I ran.

That fruit bowl looks delicious!

Reply

You are inspiring me to do my first track workout ever! I was a little chilly at the beginning of my run but then warmed right up. Happy birthday month!

Reply

It is so true–being an athlete is even more than just the actual athletic event or type of workout–the stuff that goes into it, core training, stretching, foam rolling, rest days, are just as important, if not more, than the actual workout! It’s so crazy–but that is how athletes become good athletes! Way to go in taking time to do that!

Mmmm that food sounds/looks so delicious!

I do core training at least 2x/week for 30 mins each when I teach CXWORX–and it’s killer hard. I also foam roll about 1x/week and strength train at least 3x/week. I need more stretching in my life though!

Reply

I love Parenthood but it’s really been stressing me out lately!

Reply

first, Brooke is too cute for words.

second, having a full time job puts a slight restriction on how much time I can spend training during the week. I usually can get an hour in before work, and in the evenings I spend a half hour either foam rolling or doing core. Gone are the days in college when I had 4 hours long track workouts – weirdly I kind of miss it.

The gym at my apartment complex ALWAYS has the heat blasting over the treadmills, so from about minute 2 until the finish, I am dripping in sweat.

Reply

Your fashion sense is so awesome!!! I love how you put together outfits that look comfy yet super stylish! I wouldn’t mind fashion posts from time to time! :)

Reply

Haha I remember when you used to take pictures of yourself lying down after a run…or on the sidewalk DURING a run. I’m glad you had a successful training day, and I love that you’re celebrating your entire birthday MONTH!

Reply

Yay for b-day month!! My b-day is tomorrow…woot! I celebrated a day early today with an 8 mile tempo run and it was HARD but AWESOME at the same time. Love those kind of workouts.

Reply

Yay for you running 400s! I’ve been trying to up my cross training A LOT!

Reply

February 26th!! Woo hoo!!!

Reply

ME! ME! ME! One week from today…the 11th is my birthday! What day is yours? I may never be able to beat you on your work out intensity or simply in a running race but I think I have you beat on the age you are turning on your next birthday. ;-)

I will be 45….and you?

;-)

HA!

Reply

I usually run/exercise about 6-7 hours a week. I really really should spend more of that time on stretching!

Reply

Oh my gosh, that ab video is hilarious! I can’t handle being addressed as “gang” the whole time :)

Reply

Oh Man U r a machine! I’m lacking motivation lately and haven’t felt like running which is sad bc I love it. I think I’m burnt out thanks to moving this month. I love ab work as well as weight training and try to fit it in 3 times a week :)

Reply

Love those headbands Brooke’s been sporting!! So cute!!!
I lift 4x a week and run. My coach has now added more to my routine so is say training takes at least 12hrs a week of time so far.

Reply

40 mins of stretching?! That is amazing! I was too hot during my workout today… i felt like our radiator suddenly started working JUST as I started working out! haha

Reply

Congratulations on your kick-butt workout! Awesome. We usually do 8-9 miles at track too. Amazing how quickly it goes by. And then if you add up the number of laps that it took to run that many miles. For you, not so bad at 5 laps per mile. For me 9 miles is 72 laps! Ha. Only think about that AFTER the workout.

Your 8 minute abs video pic is hilarious. My friend and I got the vhs casettes (it was 1996) of Abs of Steel and Buns of Steel when we were in high school. We were in PAIN the first time. But I still do abs every day and use some of Tammi Lee Webb’s moves :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6vY7lZGrjw

Reply

I tried that ab workout a few months ago and aws sore for days!! Talk about a surprise!

Reply

I was pretty warm during my run today except my fingers were freezing off. I know it’s hard for northern dwelling people to listen to but my hands werent used to the 50 degree weather!

Reply

February is the best! I’m a fellow Aquarius and my birthday is on the 9th. If you’re looking for a birthday treat, head to Ruth’s Diner in SLC and get the banana bread french toast. Hmmm…hmmm…I’ve dreamt about it since I stopped by there in 2011. ;)

Reply

My birthday is the 13th- looking forward to chocolate cake already!!! :)

Reply

I spend plenty of time cross training but very little stretching. It’s hard to fit it all in even getting up at 5:00am every day!

Reply

I love your laying on the ground photos! :)

Reply

Happy birthday month!

Reply

And then you have to add in all the time to get to and from the gym, shedding and putting back on layers, etc. It’s so much easier in the warm weather to just hop on outside for the run.

I ran on the treadmill today and wasn’t considerably hot, but just sweating so so much. And my half birthday is tomorrow, does that count? :)

Reply

Nice job, Janae! My workout today was hot too. I also ran on an indoor track (but an easy 5.1 miles). I probably spend about 10 hours per week on working out and stretching and lifting. A lot less if I am on vacation :) YES, I have a birthday this month on the 15th.

Reply

You actually got me hooked on that 8 minute abs video months ago! Thanks Janae :)

Reply

9 miles on a track just sounds horrible. I did 6 once, and I’m pretty sure the only reason I survived was because I was listening to Christmas music. Haha! ;)

Reply

I literally almost passed out on the treadmill at the gym today. I think it was that they had the heat on so high!! I walked out with my sweaty gym clothes still on because I was afraid I would pass out in the shower. The 30 degree outdoor air helped. But then I was embarrassed to return to work a disheveled sweaty mess. Thank god no meetings or anything so I laid low and got my work done.

I have lots of friends and family with feb birthdays. 2/10, 2/13, 2/18 and 2/26

Now that I am training for a marathon end of April I spend about 5-7 hours a week just running. Another hour cross training and 10 min of stretching daily. 2 rest days.

Reply

My daughterdaughter has a birthday in February. She will be 5 this year!
Also I took you up on your dare and did the 8 min abd video!

Reply

Yay for February birthdays! Feb. 17 for me :)

I’m home sick today and choosing a rest day over any workout. Man even sick I still want to get out and run and have to force myself to stay put!

Reply

Oooh if I combine everything (running, walking, stretching, cross training), I actually get about 12 to 14 hours! Never realized how much time all of this take up in a week.

Reply

Training sure does take time. I spend probably an hour a day 5 days a week training and then however many hours is needed for my long run on the sixth day. We love it though, what would we do without all those hours getting endorphins?! :)

Reply

Yummm that food looks so good!! And yessss the cheesy ab workout is back! Hilarious!

xo

Reply

All combined I probably spend a little over 6 hours a week working out and stretching.

I was a little hot during my run today, but that’s probably because it was a short run and I was really pushing the speed on my treadmill. I had to try out my new Transcends!

Reply

My moms bday is the 19th!

Reply

I was just thinking about how time consuming it is to train plus do everything else to stay healthy! I probably spend 8-9 hours a week running and 4-5 hours doing other things like stretching, core work, strength, etc. That’s a lot of time!

Reply

Whee, it’s my birthday month too! I’m the 26th. :)

Reply

Awesome workout! 100% agree that the right training takes up a lot of time. I would say in a day I take up about 1.5-2 hours of running/stretching/cross-training. Longer runs, more hours obviously!
Love the ab video, I have been doing it sense last summer! :)
I had a fan blowing on my today on the treadmill, not cold air, but hot air. It was miserable!

Reply

15th of Feb for me! About 10 minutes of stretching/ strength training after each run. Always hot at the moment as its Summer here.
Thanks for sharing those the videos. I’m gonna check them out. The cheesier the better!

Reply

Just did the video, the abs are burning!

Reply

Oh and I miss Parenthood so much. I don’t know where I’m up to and we don’t have cool things like Netflix and I’ve got so many episodes backed up. Its a mess. Maybe I should just get the DVDs. You’ve inspired me to sort this mess out.

Reply

Yea! Brooke’s cute little nose is healed up. :)

Reply

You’re absolutely right; training takes up so much time, especially if you want to follow a high mileage program and do every little thing that you “should” do (stretching, foam rolling, strength training, etc.). I did that once for my first marathon and haven’t found the time to do all of the extras since then. Your lunch looks like it was delicious. Nothing beats fresh, healthy food. (Except maybe ice cream. :))

Reply

First I was hot because I did a circuit workout in my fire room and then I needed to cool down and went for a walk and became extremely cold!

Reply

Great job on your run!

Reply

Looking at your post seems like or obviously a health conscious person. Good for you! After eating different kinds of food it is not bad to have a few weeks or even running even a few minutes a day. This will definitely help yourself not only on physically, but also mentally. Keep it up and continue your healthy lifestyle.

Reply

It was 80 degrees and 100% humidity here today when I went out for my run so I was pretty much dripping when I finished.

Happy Birthday Month!

Reply

I stretch for 10 minutes after every run, and I try and do at least an hour total of strength training a week…if I’m lucky, I’ll get about 20 minutes in, oops :) I was cold during my run because it was 20 degrees and I slipped and fell on the ice! ouch! My sister turns 22 tomorrow!!

Reply

February 1st! Woo birthday month!

Reply

Toasty buns, heehee! I hear you there! I’ve been hitching a ride with my dad to the gym at the wee hours of the morning and I get a serious case of the grumps if that seat heater isn’t warmed up for me, haha!

I have been strength training 4 out of my five workout days (with 1 minute cardio intervals in my sets) and only scheduling 1 cardio day a week….honestly, I’m feelin a little crazy doing that, but I’m giving it a go this year! I think I can already see a little difference. :)

Happy Birthday month! Hope it is fantastic!! PS, just reading about your workout this morning made my lungs hurt… :)

I LOVE 8 minute abs! I used to do it allllll the time with my freshman roommate! so easy and quick!

Ran 4 miles in Manhattan tonight. Ran down to the Freedom Tower, which was awesome! My Mom and Sister are both born on February 16th. I love Parenthood. Such a great show and it is so real.

I’m just easing back into running and racing (had my first actual race back this weekend!) but yeah – I must be getting old. There’s a lot of rolling, stretching, hip strengthening, and abs going on. I do the 8-min abs video, but I also do a fitness blender abs and obliques that I feel targets my “running” muscles a little more. It’s here:

Running outside in the 20 degree weather has made the gym feel unbearably stuffy

Reply

I do about 7-8 hours of training a week. Not as much running as I used to but lots of cross training! Looks like you had an awesome time!!! ;D

Reply

Between work, my family, and grad school? I run and that’s it. I run about 6 hours a week. I have neither the time or energy for cross training. I’m okay with that. You are very fortunate to have all that workout time

I must run for about 5 hours a week, did a 1 hour spinning class last night and probably stretch for about 30mins each night. Strength work is more infrequent, tends to occur on days when its impractical for me to run.

I think I was in actual danger of melting during my spinning class.

8 minute abs sounds funny – ill give it a blast (but not now, im in the office…)

Reply

Training right DOES take a lot of time. I often neglect the stretching or just don’t do it as much as I should, but it seriously makes a difference when I do put in the time. Totally worth it!

Reply

My workout was super super hot. I sweat more in one hour of piloxing than I do in 2 hours of running. Happy birthday month!

Reply

My workout today is going to be inside, so I’ll be hot.

Training properly does take a ton of work. The actual run, plus resistance training, plus rolling and stretching. It’s no wonder so many people skip the resistance training and stretching! I’ve learned the hard way though, you have to have them!

Reply

I don’t really “train” right now, but I run for about an hour everyday.

TODAY is my birthday :)

Reply

I am always cold…well until I run, then I definitely get hot but my work out was just strength training yesterday so I didn’t get too hot!

I only try to run 3 times a week because I got injured a coupe of years ago by doing too much. I used to be a way better stretcher and made sure to stretch after every work out no matter what…and now I don’t as much which isn’t good. I also used to go to yoga 2-3 times a week which really made a difference but I changed jobs and its been harder for me to get to my regular class so I haven’t gone in a long time!

I just had a bday in January, but HAPPY BDAY MONTH!!

Reply

I have a February birthday! It was the 2nd – Groundhog’s Day!

Reply

Happy bday month!!
Mine is May 1st-does it count as your bday month if your bday is on the first day of the month? Or do I count half of the previous month too? Hmmm.

Great run!
I think I spend 5-6 hours a week just running, an prob three hours doing other things that make me a better runner like workout videos, push ups, and weights.

Reply

I’m embarrassed to say I hurt myself falling off my couch so I haven’t been running at all. It really kinda stinks, especially since we had great running weather over the weekend and I was too busy hobbling to enjoy it.

Reply

oh man I’ve never added up the hours but it seems like about 12-15 hours. but that includes a long run of 2-3 hours, spinning classes and swimming.

Reply

You’re absolutely right, it takes so much time! And there is always more I could be doing…!

Reply

Before I bought a car with heated seats I would have thought you were crazy for running the AC and the heated seats at the same time. Now that I do have one though, I realize this is truly genius and do it all the time. I’ve neglected cross training and stretching the last few weeks, hopefully I’ll get better. It is definitely time consuming, but if you can multi-task and watch a good TV show at the same time things are a little easier.

Reply

I was obsessed with 8 minute abs in college – “Hey gang!”

My run this morning was a little colder than I would like, but nothing compared to the temps in Utah!

Happy birthday month!

Brooke’s outfits are always too cute!

February 26th for me :)
I was sweating pretty hard this morning at the gym!? and it was a weight day (2mile warmup) crazy hot, I think we need a fan or something. Come summer, those meatheads will be stinky.hehe

My bday is on the 25th! And we r both lefties…I need to start getting motivated to do the other things of running besides just run. Not sure if lifting my 2 year old counts as strength training. Or stretching to reach the laundry I fold count.

FEB 12!!! One week from today :)

OMG- you got me hooked on 8 minute abs awhile ago and I haven’t done it in awhile. I’ll definitely start back up tonight! ;)

Sheesh, you are inspiring with all the running and commitment to exercise you have. I always feel like I’m so busy, but you manage to still fit in all of that.

Happy Birthday! Enjoy every day – celebrate ALL MONTH! Wondering how you liked that 40 minute stretching video? Was trying to find it at the library, no go!

Take care, be happy – you are amazing!

Thanks for the abs video, I will have to start incorporating that into my routine and stop being lazy! I try and do at least and hour of some type of cardio daily, with 10-30 mins of stretching after (depends on how much stretching I did the day before). No February bday for me, but happy birthday month to you!
