Running from 2/10-2/16 and my V-Day present to myself.

I think we really need to talk about this:

Screen Shot 2014 02 14 at 9 50 22 PM

1st place (Desisa) finished in 59 minutes and 36 seconds.  13.1 miles in less than an hour for eight men!  WOW!  They make it look so so easy.

I can’t think of a better Valentine’s Day gift to myself than 3 brand spankin’ new pairs of my absolute favorite running shoes.  And they are purple.

Lots of miles (for me) and lots of speed work (for me) = lots of down time and naps with Brooke.  Lots of recovery is necessary when there is a lot of training.

IMG 7823

Just one pump class this week… back to two again next week.

Monday: 13 miles total.  Warm-up, 2 miles @ 6:19 pace, recovery jog, 1.5 miles @ 6:13 pace, recovery jog, 1 mile in 6:07 and a long cool-down.  3 miles of the cool-down on the treadmill.

Tuesday:  8 treadmill miles @ 8:34 average pace.  All I remember about this run was that I was so bored my head almost exploded (my iPad died 1/2 way through the run).

Wednesday:  10 pick-ups in the middle of 10 miles on the treadmill.  Each pick-up lasted 45 seconds (with a 45 second recovery in between) and each one got a little faster… Started at 9.0 mph and ended at 10.5 mph.

Thursday:  10 birthday miles.  I have no idea what our pace was but probably around 8:05.

Friday:  Off.  Nothing.  Needed it.  I got scraped and that is about it.  I think I overdosed the day before on donuts and a run just wasn’t going to happen.

Saturday:  2 mile warm-up, 5k and 5 mile cool-down.  10 miles total.  Recap up in the morning, I promise.

Sunday:  Off.

51 miles total for the week.

The Phoenix 1/2 marathon is in 2 weeks so we will do some speed this week and the following week will be easy and full of tapering.

We got our chocolate chip pancakes this morning.

Man, they were speedy! Very cool deal on your shoes. I just ordered a new pair of my Asics last week. They should be here tomorrow! Pretty sure I will be taking them for a spin tomorrow night.

We are eagerly awaiting this 5k recap! ha. I know you did awesome Janae! Anyways great week of running and I’m glad to see it all coming along for you so nicely.

As for me I ran a solid week as well and am finally getting back into the groove. I did a 14k today and got second woman overall so I’m please. I love (love…valentines day…bad LOLZ pun) themed races.

Reply

That sort of speed is truly confounding.

Reply

I remember (not too very long ago) when you ran almost exclusively on a treadmill-man have times changed! Hope you had a good birthday and V-day! Yesterday we did 7.5 miles in the snow, today I can barely walk-lol!

Eagerly awaiting this 5K recap!

Also looking forward to seeing what your week of tapering entails… Surely not more donuts?…I wouldnt be surprised ;)

Best run was definitely my long run on Friday of 8 miles.

Only 5 weeks left before my first half.
Any tips for first time half marathon runners?
What to eat before? What to wear? I’m in Texas so there’s no telling what the weather will be like. :)

Love purple. It’s my favorite.

Woo hoo, those are some serious miles! Part of me misses high mileage weeks like that, but I am much slower than you so it took me a long time to run all of those miles. :) My best run was my Thursday run because it was actually warm enough to run outside (no wind chill warning!).

Yay for new running shoes, I know they always make me happy. My running week wasn’t all that great. Izzy was sick a majority of the week so I only got to go on a 5 and 9mile run, I didn’t get to lift weights or x-train. Now that things are better I’ll be hitting it hard next week.

Reply

I would gift myself with running shoes any day!!! Looks like you had a great Valentines and birthday; I’m so happy you did :-)

Brooke is adorable. My little girl likes cards, too. She currently carries her bumblebee valentines card with her everywhere.

Reply

Love those shoes :) The pure project line is the best! Best run was today’s because it was sunny and 52 for the first time in forever. Felt like spring!

Reply

Purple shoes are the best! I’m glad you got to stock up on them!

This week was a mileage cut back week for me, but I’m feeling strong and healthy and ready for next week when things pick back up. I’m only 5 weeks out from my next half!

Reply

Only 2.250 miles this week for me. I had my first ever sinus infection this week so no more running til next week.
What a cute card Mer got for Brooke. I love the simple things that make them so happy. Happy Sunday to u Janae.

I’ve just recently moved abroad to Europe and have now been here for nearly a month – my first “higher-mileage” week since being here. Before I left I was peaking at 30 to 40-mile weeks over my winter break…and this week was my first 32-mile week here! Thrilled to have squeezed all those miles in – it shows that I’m getting acclimated here!

Looking forward to your race recap – congrats! A good end to a special week for you, I bet!

My best run was a treadmill Tabata run. Next time I will try doing 45 minutes which only means 30 minutes of running. It made me feel fast.

I just ordered those shoes from runningwarehouse.com
Used discount code FB15D and ended up paying $51 with free shipping. Great deal!

You’re gonna rock it at the half!! I’m running the Phoenix 1/2 too, but I’m still nursing a 2-year injury, so I’ll probably be about a half hour behind you ;) I got to 8 miles today, which is the longest I’ve run in probably 6 months, so that was exciting! Still a long ways from being ready for Boston in two months, but better than nothing! These days, any pain-free run is a GREAT run for me!

Reply

I love that Brooke is stripped down for breakfast! I do that with my kids until they are about 3 or so. My friend thought it was weird, but– who wants to wash syrup out of clothes AND off the kidlets!? Not me! Happy birthday– I’m glad you had a good running week.

Reply

So I feel inadequate – the best I do on a half is just under two – and these boys have spanked me left and right. I need to get my life together.

Reply

I only had two runs this week on a treadmill…weak. But lotssss of barre classes! Next week I plan to get back into running :)

Reply

I had my first double digit run today. 10 miles on the treadmill! Just started training for my first half ;)

Reply

I just did 10 miles and.. I am going to do 10 more miles later. I wish I had gone straight through, but I don’t want to take tomorrow off.

Reply

I love those shoes! I’m always insanely jealous of people who can run so freaking FAST. Like, how is that even possible?!

Reply

My running was crap this week. Divide yours by 4 and then subtract and few and there was my total mileage. I’m trying not to get down on myself because my body is very vocal about when it needs a break, and I definitely needed some recovery. I’m not shy about enjoying it.

Reply

Those shoes are super duper cool!

I also have a 1/2 marathon in two weeks! Your time will probably be 30 minutes faster than mine though, lol. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!!!

Reply

it was an easier week– 7 days now till my half marathon!

Reply

Best run was my 5K yesterday, worst run was my easy 3 today … right hip flexor is so sore and did not want to cooperate.

…Finishing a half marathon in under 60 minutes … my mind can’t even begin to comprehend doing that! I think it would take all the fun out of the run, although I’m sure crossing the finish line with that kind of time feels darn good!

Reply

My running week was pretty solid until yesterday. My Valentine’s meals didn’t sit too well for my run yesterday, so I had to stop and ended up going to Chipotle instead.

Reply

I took this week easy. My brain needed a break from constant training and pressure every run.

Reply

I took a break from running for almost 2 months and I’m back into it now – slowly building up some mileage/consistency/endurance – so at the moment, every run is great because I get to be running again!

Reply

I got a pair of pink and purple addidas shoes this week. They were on sale but unsure if they would work out for me and now my size is sold out.

Had a less than perfect running week. Super busy with appointments, my husband coaches basketball and he had 2 games and 3 practices, and volunteering with a 3 course Valentine’s fundraising dinner for Nursery School which my oldest is in. Managed 2 runs for a total of 20km and I am just going to have to accept that!

We also had our traditional sunday morning pancakes, ours are plain and I make homemade extra chocolatey chocolate syrup for my son’s and we have pure maple syrup on ours. It has become our favorite Sunday tradition (other than my long run!)

I had a terrible running week! :( I ran 10 miles on Monday at an 8 min pace and then my IT Band (which has been acting up for the past three weeks) would not allow me to run any more. I’ve done weight and elliptical workouts instead- boring! I was determined to run 8 miles today at an easy pace and I couldn’t even run for 1 minute. I have been in tears all day and to make matters worse, had to go to a running store with my husband after my failed attempt. Will call the Orthopedist tomorrow.
I can’t wait to live vicariously through you when I read your race recap. My fastest 5K was 23:40 and I know that you totally blew that away! So excited to hear!

Reply

Amazing mileage! I ordered some on sale Brooks as well and it was pretty much the best deal ever. You had the right idea to get 3 pairs!

Reply

I didn’t run as much as I’d have liked but hey, we got like 10 more inches of snow this week! I have a question: are you going to be running the Utah Valley Marathon/half marathon on June 15th?! I’m thinking about going out to Utah this summer to visit my cousin and running in the half marathon and of course I want to meet you!!

Reply

My running week was not that great. My long run was terrible and ended up being too short. I pretty much hurt the entire time. I think I may have pushed it too much last weekend by upping the mileage too much. Also took an extra rest day (which isn’t always a bad thing) but I felt like it hurt me this week. Today was the start of a new week though and I had a great run (raced a 5k)! It was not my fastest as I didn’t want to push it with yesterday run and all. But I was steady paced and it felt good. :)

Reply

I got a pair of Nike Free 4.0 v2 for $25 today…. So happy belated valentine’s day to me!!!!! :D Runs were pretty much good this week… except I got sick again even though I was just sick last month. I think i’m fighting the same thing I’ve been fighting since I never rested…

Random, but this is someone’s bad running week, and my worst nightmare: http://jezebel.com/i-pooped-myself-while-running-a-marathon-and-lived-to-t-1522441051

Incredible week of training for you! Congrats on the 5K win – can’t wait to read the recap.
Brooke is so cute needing that card up while she eats!!

Reply

Ran ten miles and really enjoyed it yesterday! My knee gave me trouble the first half, and then there was no pain the second half, so that was exciting. Just completed my first week of my first full marathon training!

Reply

Wow you had a great weekend of running! The most running I did this weekend was pool running but I am OK with that :)

Reply

Let me begin by saying I love your website! I stumbled upon it while trying to find a running group in my hometown, Austin. And now I’m hooked. :)
I have a question about when you are doing a long run, 10 miles, what do you eat before, during and after? Mainly need help on the during-a-run snack/fuel and/or drink (water, Gatorade).
Another question about the vitamin for joint recovery. Do you take 1 everyday?
Thanks and have a lovely evening. ;)

HAHA brooke with the card up in front of her- so adorable!! I did zero running this week, whoops :)

21 miles…my biggest training week yet. My first 1/2 is in 10 weeks! I’m excited because I am crushing training!

I got some Brooks PureCadence 2s because you love your PureFlow 2s so much. I need a guidance shoe. And can I say that I am amazed? I’ve been wearing Saucony Guides for the last year, but the Brooks kept my toes from hurting. My husband wears PureFlow 2s, and he’s having a big I-told-you-so moment! I got the purple ones too. :)

I haven’t been able to run outside since Thursday’s snow storm. I’m hoping to strap on the Yaktrax and run outside tomorrow! I’ve been cross-training on my spin bike.

I love the sleeping picture of Brooke… so sweet!

Holy moly 8 people breaking 60 minutes?? That’s insane!
My best run this week was my easy wed night run. I didn’t look at my watch and it felt easy but when I looked at my time it was way faster than usual. I didn’t have a bad run this week, they were mostly eh.

Reply

My week was pretty bad as far as running goes…Monday I went on a 6.5 mile run, and about half way through I felt a sharp pain in my foot. Like the hard-headed person I am, I ran through it, and 6 days later it still hurts and I haven’t been able to run at all. Maybe by Wednesday I’ll be able to do a short run but I’m not sure it’s going to happen. :(

Reply

I am always in awe of your running logs- you’re amazing!!

Reply

My best run this week was my 10k PR which was a minute faster than my best expectation! Thank you for asking ;)

Reply

Nice mix of short and long speed work there! I think I need to crank my running up a notch. I’m a post-injury scaredy cat, though. I want to get a good 10k this spring and I’m not even sure where to begin, honestly. Shorter, more intense runs? More miles? All race-specific stuff like 1200s? Or some fast 200s? No clue. I need a training plan! Other than being totally lost, my week was good – 45 miles, no pain, and a pair of new shoes :)

Reply

Oh, and WHAT? Eight under an hour? My head hurts. We are either all doping or just getting faster and faster.

Reply

Great miles this week! So speedy!
Best run was my 10 miler tonight, it was tough but felt good at the same time!

Reply

Omg those race times are insane!

I can’t wait to hear your 5k recap!

I ran my farthest distance to date….22 miles this morning. Now it’s taper time to my first marathon. I’m excited and scared! That 22 was tough, I can’t lie.

Reply

That is insane for those men, they DO make it look so easy! I started flirting with speed work this week and think I’m in love :)

Reply

Just finished a crazy busy weekend, but finally found time to get some miles in this afternoon. I ended up late for the family dinner, but my scheduled 8 miles are done and I got to take my new Garmin watch for a spin. :)

Reply

This last week was my first week of tapering. My best run was my speed work earlier in the week, and my worst run was my measly little 4-mile run later in the week. I just felt AWFUL and exhausted. Ah well, that’s what recovery runs are for I guess…

I also went to my local running store and bought a couple things for race day in two weeks and was SOOO excited to get home to try everything on!!! I love new running clothes!!

Reply

Those men amaze me! My running this week has been horrific but looking forward to a new week and new running goals!!!

Reply

I did the same thing with the pure flows! They are my favorite running shoe and too good of a deal to pass up. My running week was good- 45 miles with a mix of speed, hills, and recovery runs.

I’ve been doing pump for the last couple of weeks and hoping it really helps my running. Have a great week!

Reply

All of my runs last week were on the treadmill so I guess they were all the best and the worst at the same time. If only this ice would melt and the snow would go away so I could use the roads again!

Reply

Thank you for reminding me that I need to go online and buy those shoes!! I keep forgetting…I usually stock up on my faves too!
Best run? Prob the run with my friend!:) I now love running with friends!!:)

Reply

I have been nursing an apparent IT Band injury the past few weeks (I guess that is what it’s called–pain radiating down the outside of my leg from hip to knee). I have had one injury or another this entire training season and it is really starting to anger me. I have been foam rolling and doing strength training, but I just can’t seem to get 100% healthy. My half marathon is one month away and I’m really starting to get nervous that I will be walking a large portion of it if I can’t get myself together! That would be a true bummer.

Reply

Wow you are fast! Brooke is adorable. Have another great week!

Reply

At last! Someone with the insight to solve the prmoleb!

Reply

best run of the week was yesterday’s 10 miler on the treadmill. I really got into a groove and was kept entertained by an episode of Sherlock.

Reply

Great week of running! I think my best run last week was an easy 8 miler one morning, just one of those runs that felt easy and steady. Today’s morning was an awesome tempo that I am sure will be my best run of the week. Last weeks tempo was probably my worst feeling of the week so having a good tempo today more than made up for it!

Hi Janae! Make sure to check out runningwarehouse.com using FB15D for extra discount off sale shoes (plus free 2 day shipping & no tax!). Happy late Birthday & Valentine’s day!! Looks like you had a wonderful time! I was wondering – are you more of a fan of the pureflow 2s than the 3s? I was trying to decide which to try and noticed you are racing in the 2s and ordered more 2s, too. Thank you!!

Reply

You have me hooked on the Pure Flow 2s now. I had been wearing Asics forever, but was having problems with plantar fasciitis, so I decided to try and switch and they have been so comfortable. I found them for $59.88 on liquidation at Running Warehouse if anyone is still looking for them. Coupon code “fb15d” will get you an extra 15% off.
