My sister and I now have a weekly date for intense intervals together.

There is a reason I don’t branch out with fitness classes very often.  The reason for this is because I almost pass out from exhaustion whenever I try something new.  For instance, today.

My sister has been going to a sports conditioning class every week and kept telling me that I needed to go with her so I finally did.  We did a little bit of kickboxing during the class but used the bags in many other ways to also kill me off… like jumping up and down off of the base a million times.  The class is based around many intense intervals with some strength training with the bands thrown in throughout the class.

The instructor said that the only thing consistent about the class is that they always do intense intervals, my sister said that each week is extremely different.  Even though I almost died 10 times (8 times for my sister…  She is stronger than me) I want to do this class every week now.  It is our new midweek date together.  I think I need to convince her that going for french toast after the class should be part of the date too.

I would be afraid to be in a dark alley with me too.

This is Brooke’s way to tell me that she is ready to go do something and leave the house.  Usually she just brings me my running shoes because even she knows that I rarely put on fancy shoes/clothes.

NewImage

We had some errands to go and do.  This whole divorce thing takes a lot of time.  I’ll just leave it at that.

 NewImage

My mom came with us and when we got to our destination she realized that she forgot to change out of her slippers and had to wear them around town.  We laughed pretty hard.   Maybe Brooke needs to bring my mom her shoes too.

NewImage

Lunch was SOOO good today. I had leftover curry and so I put in a chicken breast, potato and carrots in the crockpot this morning and smothered it in the good stuff.  My plate is hiding in the back because it didn’t look very appetizing.

NewImage

Leftovers are really the best.

And I am taking these like crazy today because I feel a cold coming on.  I refuse to get sick this close to a race… I know, I still have a week and a half until my race but I just really don’t want to get sick.   It tells me that it is #1 Pharmacist Recommended so that has to mean that it is going to prevent me from having a cold.  I believe everything I read.

Are you a leftover fan or not?

What was the last new (to you) fitness class/workout that you tried?  Do you like trying out new workouts or would you rather just stick to running?

Any tips/tricks to beat a cold?

Do you use the crockpot often?  Favorite recipe that uses the crockpot that you can link to in the comments?!?

I’m not a leftover fan at all. We have a deal in my house where Joe eats all the leftovers so I can make new food every day. I don’t even like leftover pizza and that is saying A LOT. Last new fitness class I took was boxing and I LOVED it, but my arms hurt for a week :(

Reply

WHAT!?!?! Send me your leftovers please. Thank you.
I want to try boxing!

Leftovers – depends on what they are. If it’s indian food then heck yeah!

I love Brooke’s little outfit today. What a cute little gal!

I’m sorry the divorce thing is taking forever. Power through!

That class looks amazing. I need to do more conditioning!

Reply

I love leftovers – usually! Pizza and Indian food are the best :)

I did a butt/legs/ab class on Monday and it killed me. 6 flights of stairs x 8, kettlebell swings, and two types of squats. I have never been so grateful for my foam roller…;)

When I feel like I’m getting sick: chicken noodle soup, applesauce, oj and pedialyte. I know pedialyte is for kids, but it replaces electrolytes and keeps you hydrated!

Reply

I love leftovers. I hate sammich lunches, so leftovers is key! I used my crockpot often as it makes dinner so easy on days that I come home late.

I have a cold too :-( I’m hoping going out for waffles fixes that.

Reply

Whenever I feel a cold coming on I drink a ton of orange juice and also use a neti pot on my nose. It could be all in my head, but it seems like it flushes all the germs out of my nose. I know it sounds gross but it works really well for me (it is a life saver during allergy season too). Hope you don’t get sick!

The only class I do is spinning. The first time I went I couldn’t believe how toughit was. I now consider it a key change to my training which has really helped!

I love the slow cooker! Meatballs in a home made tomato based sauce is probably my favourite thing to put into it :D

Reply

I’m a fan of leftovers! I like to know that I dropped some monies and got at least two meals out of it! Plus, it usually tastes just as good when it’s reheated.

Reply

Yay, on trying a new class!! I’ve never trained using a bag, looks like fun. LOL, on your mom forgetting her shoes.
I am a huge fan of leftovers, especially things like chili. The latest thing I’ve tried is Tabata and TRX training and they both kick my butt. I tried these little cold prevention pellets called Oscillococcimum for kids from walgreens and they worked.
Crossing my fingers and saying a prayer that you don’t get sick. xoxo

I’m a pharmacist and I use and recommend that stuff all the time- one of my favorites! It really works so I’m sure you will be just fine!

love me some leftovers (except salad-that doesn’t save so well). i typically do some running and some in home workout because gyms totally stress me out (and cost $$)!

take that zinc-that’s supposed to help with colds! i totally laughed when i saw the picture of your mom’s slippers on-ha!

Reply

mmm leftovers…leftovers means I don’t have to cook and generally less cleanup mess! win win in my book!

I use Cold-Eeze too! Not sure if they actually do anything, but they make me feel like I’m less sick.

I really need to branch out with my fitness class/workouts…I tend to just run, lift, cycle, and do Pilates. I’ll throw in a Pure Barre class every now and then when I feel like looking like a weakling.

Reply

Brooke’s outfit today is 1000% adorable! I used to hate leftovers but now I love them (what was I ever thinking!?) I think everything tastes better cold, and leftovers = more time to do fun stuff and less time in the kitchen!

Reply

SLEEP is the best thing for a cold or on-coming cold! That and lots of fluids and fruits and vegetables :) I love chicken tacos from the crockpot… put in chicken breasts and add a jar of salsa and some taco seasoning then leave it all day to cook… it makes the house smell amazing too!

I tried a kickboxing bootcamp class and I was not very coordinated BUT got a great workout and had fun so it was a winner!

Reply

That’s what I was going to say. Sleep and fluids and good food.

My family and I swear by Emergen-C (amazon has it http://www.amazon.com/Emergen-C-627794-Super-Orange-30-count/dp/B00016RL9G). It doesn’t taste the best, but it’s certainly not the worst. Stick to the citirus flavors, and mix in enough water so it’s a small drink that you can shoot back – get ‘er down!

Reply

I second this!!! I buy at walgreens or trader joes.

No colds allowed! You will fight it off. Chamomile tea and plenty of sleep.

I just started cross-country skiing (skate style) and it is an incredible workout! I had no idea there was so much hill climbing involved (we have gone to some pretty challenging terrain). My whole body still hurts from Sunday’s outing. But it feels good to be sore and use different muscles.

I wish my sister liked to exercise. That’s an awesome thing that you can share.

Ugh, divorce process is the worst. All of the details, paperwork, mail I didn’t want to retrieve, banks, courts, lawyers- no thank you. You will get through it, I promise…As for leftovers, I rarely have any but when I do, totally love whatever it is- cold!

Reply

I love leftovers but I cant get my son to touch them and I love to cook in the crockpot. Beef Stew in the crockpot is one of my specialties.

When I feel a cold coming on, I take zinc, B complex and C vitamins and I also drink lots of water. It definitely works. My in laws were just visiting and they both had colds and coughs which my husband also got. They were all sick for two weeks but I never got sick. :) Running also helps ;) Running helps everything, I’m convinced of it.

I see no problem with wearing slippers outside of the house, especially if they are hard bottomed. I used to try to wear them out on froyo dates with my old roommate and she would never let me.

I am def a leftover fan. I usually make a dinner that will last for a few lunches throughout the week, but by the time its made I’m too full from scraps that I don’t actually eat it for dinner that night.

Last class I tried is zumba. I’m horrible and it really hurts my knees to move that much so I don’t really enjoy it tons, but I go with friends so it’s more of a social activity than an exercise class.

I would love to use my crockpot more, but I usually leave my house at 7AM and don’t really get home til 7PM and most recipes say the food shouldn’t cook more than 10 hours. This is a problem because by 7PM I definitely do not want to cook it would be nice to come home to a crock pot that already has dinner ready to go.

Reply

Love leftovers. Love Barre, not Zumba. Trying Power Yoga this week.

I use the crockpot to cook chicken until it’s soft enough to shred and add it to my lunch for a week. I should use it more.

Cute slippers!

Reply

I definitely like leftovers, they make for such easy meals the next day. That curry meal sounds real tasty. Load up on Emergen-C and sleep a lot and eat lots and lots of vegetables and drink water! Hope it doesn’t turn into a full-blown cold!

Reply

I intentionally make too much food so that we have leftovers! It just makes life easier! I hope you can fight the cold off. I can’t wait to hear how the race goes :-)

Reply

Love leftovers! I actually think most food tastes better the next day.

I try to make something in the crockpot once a week, usually a day when I know I’m super busy and need a quick meal. Favorites are turkey chili, buffalo chicken, carnitas, oh I tired this Indian tikka masala recipe in the crockpot, it was really good!

I really need to broaden my horizons and try more activities, but I don’t belong to a gym right now, so that limits me somewhat.

Reply

I am very cautious about trying new workout classes (or new instructors). I tried Body Pump for the first time 2 weeks ago and LOVED it!! So I’m going to work that it twice a week. I go to spinning off and on, but a few weeks ago I went to a new class time and the instructor was so so terrible so I had to leave halfway through it was so bad. I wasn’t even sweating! Glad I ran before it…

Reply

That class looks awesome! I take a Nike Training Club class (similar to what’s on the Nike Training Club app) that I love and sounds somewhat similar.

And I love leftovers. They make the best meals!

Reply

Um leftovers are the BEST! Not having to cook for another day? Fine by me!
I ran outside as it was snowing today. I thought of you and that you would be proud of me being a tough runner. ;)

Reply

Ack! Say no to the plague! If I feel something coming on, I load up on vitamin C and garlic infused milk. Okay I know that second one sounds nasty, but whenever I used to get sick as a child, my mom would always boil a cup of milk with a clove of garlic crushed into it, sweeten it with honey, and then make me drink it down. It didn’t taste the best, but holy.wow did it ever work.

Reply

I’ve never heard of the garlic milk, but that’s interesting cause I have heard about loading up on garlic like that. Might have to try that sometime!

I am a huge fan of leftovers. Plus, they are super easy and require minimal effort. When I am fighting off a cold I try to get lots of fresh air, don’t push myself too hard, drink lots of hot tea or diet 7up (depending on temperature), and make sleep a priority.

No new workout classes: Just running and Planet Fitness
I take Airborne: I love that stuff when I feel a cold coming on: Mix 1 tablet in Orange Juice and a tablespoon of honey… Warmed up in microwave: YUM Keep the Drs away.
I love the crock pot: I use it a few times a week. So convenient

Leftovers are the best! I love what I call “leftovers salad”- basically heated up Chipotle burrito bowl leftovers, fajita leftovers, or other randoms thrown on tons of spinach and greens!
Question- How did you punch those bags without gloves? I always have to wrap my hands when I kick box!

I love leftovers! Anything to get out of cooking! This is my favorite crockpot recipe: http://www.eat-yourself-skinny.com/2011/11/beef-and-tomato-stew.html. Amazing and so easy!

Leftovers are hit and miss. Depending on what they are! Leftover pizza = amazing. Leftover fish = not so amazing. I’ve never tried kickboxing- it looks killer!

This is from Starbucks secret menu. It’s said to help with colds. Mint tea bag and chamomile tea bag. Add half hot water and half steamed lemonade. Add honey to flavor (honey is full of healthy things!).

Tips for the cold: echinacea! It’s probably total placebo, but I believed it had healing powers.

Crock pot: you MUST try this: http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/crockpot_lasagna.html
I make it once every two weeks and bring the leftovers to work. It’s a great way to use up produce that’s about to kick the bucket too. You can sub in any veggie and it works (I put carrots and celery in once because I’m weird).
One note, add spices to the sauce part (or the ricotta mixture) like you would if you were making tomato sauce. Without the spices, it’s a little blah

Reply

Yes I love leftovers!

I’ve been doing p90x lately. This is the first time I will have completed it all the way through. I would probably get better results if I followed their diet plan though ;)

I love Thieves oil from young living oils. I’m not a distributor but I’ve used that oil for years at the first sign of cold and it works well. I also use other natural remedies and oils too. I would say just make sure you are getting enough sleep and try to eat well. (that’s so hard for me all the time but at least try to be good if you are feeling sick) Good Luck!

You look super tan! I need to get to Utah!

So this might sound weird but when I felt a cold coming on I ate lots of garlic and I never got sick! I ate some garlic cloves plain (just peeled them and ate them straight) but also put them into recipes and smoothies. I would warn you to try not to go out in public while you’re doing this- my husband said I smelled pretty intense for those couple of days!
I eat leftovers all the time for lunch the next day, I don’t really like eating the same thing for dinner twice in a row.

Reply

I use Zicam. That and Airborne. My kids have had horrible colds and I’ve avoided them all winter. Of course my children are older and I don’t cuddle with them. They won’t let me. :(
I love leftovers!

Whenever I feel a cold coming on I try to get extra sleep and if I can I’ll take a nap. Sleep is when our body heals itself after all! :)

Leftovers= our family’s best friend! I cooked a 20lb turkey yesterday just to have one turkey dinner, so now I have 14qt of turkey rice soup, a turkey squash and cranberry shepherd’s pie, and a turkey quinoa and broccoli casserole. I like to think I am creative and it would be hard to tell you were eating the same base of the meal for most of the week for lunch and supper :)

Reply

Leftovers = BEST. They always soak up even more flavor and are better the next day! I’ve actually never taken a fitness class! I’d like to, but I don’t wanna pay… ;) I had a really bad cold last week and I didn’t take anything. I was a sniffly mess!

I wish I used the crockpot more. I always forget about it!! My fave recipe -> http://iowagirleats.com/2014/01/13/crock-pot-sweet-potato-and-quinoa-turkey-chili/

I love leftovers too!! Hello easy dinner! :)

I’ve totally done that before & left in slippers…..hilarious & awkward!

Reply

Leftovers are the best! Certain foods get BETTER as leftovers when the flavors all soak in together. And your crockpot creation sounds quite delicious.

Reply

Ohhh that class looks and sounds really fun! I love the little gym at my condo but the downside is that I can’t sign up for any fun classes. I think I’d really love spin, zumba, etc. I need to join a real gym and expand my horizons beyond free weights and running!

Reply

Leftovers in my house are either instantly devoured the next day or abandoned to the fridge until we finally clean it out. There is no in between.

Chinese food and pizza are always polished off. The homemade stuff is hit and miss.

I’m not big on group activities, so I haven’t taken any fitness classes in years.

Reply

Emergen-C! I drink it when I feel a cold coming on and it works like gold. I don’t drink it any other time, but I mix a packet of the Immune System stuff with my post-run water and I swear I haven’t gotten sick in years. It’s amazing.

I used to hate leftovers but now I’m a HUGE fan :) Thai food is so yummy and just as good the next day (or later that day ;) )

Leftovers totally work for me.

Yin Chiao = cold prevention perfection.

The last “class” thing I tried was Bikram yoga. I got addicted and needed an intervention. I haven’t touched the stuff in 8 years.

Reply

Pure Barre was the last new class I tried and I didn’t really like it! I’m more of a spin or kickboxing class kind of girl!

I like leftovers if they’re something that will still be good when reheated.

I woke up Saturday morning with a cold. No warning, just woke up with a full blown head cold. Ugh. I tried running Saturday, but became light headed. So, now I’m resting until I’m 100%!

My go to crock pot recipe is a few chicken breasts covered in salsa and maybe some chicken broth. It makes for a great quesadilla or burrito filling. It’s boring, yet super easy and yummy!

Reply

I’m a big fan of leftovers, but only the day after — after that, my brain seems to think the food is all of a sudden not good anymore… I know that’s weird! :)

Reply

Love leftover Chinese, Thai, Indian or should I just say any Asian is great as a leftover.

Love my Crockpot, usually make stew, but I have made Chicken Soup and pulled pork.

Hot water, lemon and honey all day every day when I am getting a cold, but last week I was getting such a sinus cold and because I am training I ran to my Dr. knowing they would give me something and they did!

The crockpot is my saving grace when I am working a lot! I always love being able to come home to a delicious dinner already made!

That looks like a great class you took!

I love any workout class, I used to be only running focused but a niggly hammy made me look out side of running I.e. Weights, spin & HIIT. This post funnily enough inspired me to go for my first road run of 2014 today (it’s a hot summer day here), it was awesome I remembered why I love running! And I released how much heavier my three year old felt in the running stroller;)

Reply

I love left overs, everything tastes better the next day and you can add a bunch of new stuff to make it just really delicious new stuff. Pretty profound right?

I did Barre… not a fan. I stick to yoga and running. I do like boxing / kickboxing but only at one particular gym. I’m so cool.

Crockpot is my absolute favorite – lately I do 4 large chicken breast with 1/2 – 3/4 a bottle of sauce (depending on the size of the bottle) and I cook for 8 hours on low. My favorite is hot sauce. I found some really awesome vinegar based sauces by dinosaur bbq that were great too. Default you can always do some chicken broth (or beef to mix it up) and season it.

Reply

we HATE leftovers, I wish I could find someone who would eat them, better than throwing them out

Reply

I love the crockpot! We use it every Sunday for a nice lazy to fuss dinner.
I hear wearing damp socks to bed is supposed to work. No, I am not trying to give you pneumonia (I actually spelled that right first try) you can even google it!
I wore my slippers to the mall by accident once… le sigh…
Leftovers are AMAZING! I had them tonight :D

Reply

I love leftovers (when there are some left that is!).

I have a few cold remedies. My colds often become tonsilitis and Betadine Sore throat gargle works really well. BUT it tastes disgusting and you do have to do it every few hours. Also another gargle is Cayene pepper, honey, lemon and some warm water. And for a blocked nose a netti pot. Good luck!

Reply

I eat leftovers for lunch every day so I guess I like them :) I like every class I take and then want to take a gazillion more. It’s a little ridiculous.

Reply

I love love love that you do stuff with your sister. I’m 26, my sister is 24, my other sister is 22, and my brother is 18. We’re all super close, even those there’s stuff that drives us nutty about each other, but I love hanging out with them. I can tell it makes my mom really happy when she sees us like doing sibling stuff together. It is so cool to see someone else who has that kind of relationship with their sibling too.

I was a couple days into a cold and tried Cold Calm, you can get it at CVS or Walgreens. I only took it for one day and already felt better! Two days later I felt like my normal self! You have to take it as instructed, good luck! Here is a link for it http://www.boironusa.com/products/coldcalm-tablets/

SOME leftovers are ok! Like pizza. Pizza anytime!
For a cold: 2 500mg of Vit C every 2 hours! And high pulp OJ!
I do quite a few classes at the gym – kickboxing with the bags was the class tonight so I know exactly what you mean about jumping off and on the base! GREAT workout and a GREAT stress/anger management tool! ;)

Reply

I used to hate trying new workouts, and always just wanted to run and only run. But lately, since I’ve added bootcamp and strenth training I LOOOVE trying new things. It’s like I can’t get my hands on enough classes or new workouts. The only problem is that it costs a fortune to try everything I want to try. BOO.

Leftovers are the greatest. My all time fave has to be cold pizza. OMG. Cold pizza.

Reply

I always use Zicam, tons of water, diffusing essential oils and tea and honey to keep a cold away. So far this winter it has worked!

Reply

No leftovers for this girl! They never taste as good to me the second time around. As for the cold, if your stomach can handle it I recommend Zicam- it gets rid of a cold super fast, but also gives me a terrible stomachache!

Reply

Courtney, always be sure to take on a full stomach-Zinc is a strong vitamin that will make your stomach upset if on empty.
I learned this the hard way. I lived in my sisters in law for a year. I had a 45 min commute to work and she told me I should take Zinc daily, so I would have it with my AM coffee with her. Then take my long ride to work and always felt so nauseous when I arrived at work. All my coworkers insisted I was pregnant (I was not!) and after a few miserable mornings, I realized it was the zinc!

Reply

Vitamin C! As soon as I get the first hints of a cold it’s berrocca, vitamin C tablets’, oranges… Oh and also echinacea tablets. Works every time!!

Also I love leftovers – makes so much sense for a busy life!

Reply

I’m convinced that my fridge has some aura that makes leftovers taste better. I love them! Thanks for this post — I’m going to get a crockpot. I feel like it’s a runner’s staple. Can you leave it simmering and leave the house??? That would be massively convenient for all the run clubs, and work, and everything else… wow.

Brooke, I love your blog and I’ve been reading you for about six months now. Thanks for all your whole-hearted posts! Hope to meet you at a race someday! I just started my own running blog this month, after a little inspiration from both you and ShutupandRun. :)

Meghan, yes, you can set it in the morning on low, and it will be cooked when you get home : )

Zinc IS good. Your pharmacist also recommends staying well-hydrated and well-rested and avoiding sugar for the day. :)
Getting enough vitamin D routinely is also necessary for your immune system. I think we’ve gone a little overboard on vitamin D lately and, since you run outside and get some sun exposure, I don’t think you need a prescription strength capsule, but you can safely add 400-800 iu in daily.

long-time reader, finally commenting :)
I LOVE leftovers. I don’t understand how some people don’t like them…?!
I’d rather stick to running, spinning and swimming. Burning 300 calories in an hour in Zumba is not worth it (sorry!)
I love my crockpot but hate preparing it in the morning (always using onions it seems) so I make my husband do it :) I just made a mean coconut chicken curry… then put eggnoodles over it!

Reply

Have you tried Zicam for a cold. It is basically a miracle.

I think the last class I took was a random yoga class that a friend dragged me to.

I love leftovers from restaurants, but not when I make the food. Is that weird?

Reply

I love leftovers ! they make meals so easy!

I used to hate leftovers when I was younger, but now I love them!! I think I love them even more than the first time I make the dish…in fact, I have leftovers today for lunch! :)

You should juice some greens/tomatoes/etc. for that cold! You can detox and get a lot of vitamin C!! I hope you feel better!

I love the Crockpot as well! We usually make pork in it and then have it for several different types of meals…it’s my favorite :)

I don’t really do work out classes because I prefer to work out on my own. The last class I went to was an Athletic Conditioning class at the Y with my friends and I pulled my back out during that warm up so that was fun haha :)

Reply

LOVE intense intervals! I take a bootcamp class that I love/hate going to. I take 5000mg Vitamin D daily. Has really helped keep any sickness away this season.

P.S. Just want to give you a ((HUG)) Hang in there!

I was recently jogging on the treadmill and wasn’t feeling it so I popped into a Power Pump class not really expecting it to be too tough. Like you, I got my butt kicked and was extremely sore the next day. It was a pleasant surprise!

ZICAM! its the best, and it definintely helps keep the cold away. (the disolve in your mouth ones are best).

I wont take leftovers home from a restuarant, but I will make a big crockpot or dish on Sunday and have for lunch for the week or dinners a few nights.

Reply

Vitamin C, lots of water, extra sleep and keep your hands clean and away from your face! :)

LOVE leftovers. We always make a big dinner on Sunday nights so we have at least a couple lunches worth left for the week.

I haven’t tried anything new lately for workouts, but I really miss kickboxing, pilates, and pump classes. After my marathon next month I plan to start doing some classes again. I just wish I had someone to go with!

I love left overs, especially Chinese.

Going to classes is the only way I will get strength training in, otherwise all I would do is run :) I love bodypump!

You HAVE TO try Emergen-C! Any time I feel a cold coming on or someone is sick around me I will drink a packet and it works wonders! I haven’t been sick in years. :) You can purchase it at any drug or grocery store where the vitamins are.

I love my crockpot. This is my favorite recipe, it’s so easy that it seems impossible to be as good as it is!

I LOOOOOOVVVEEEE leftovers. I’m in the minority and think that leftovers taste better than the day the food was cooked.

I’m fighting something right now as well :( I make sure to drink as much water as possible in an effort to just flush it all out.

I like leftovers….especially after Thanksgiving! ;)

The last “new” class I’ve taken is a boot camp/H.I.I.T. class that comes right after I teach BodyPump at the gym on Saturdays. Totally kicks my booty – I’ve recruited my brother to take it with me now, too. :)

To beat a cold, well, to soothe a sore throat, one of my neighbors in college taught me to heat up diet coke or dr. pepper in a mug in the microwave….there’s something about the warm bubbles that makes your throat feel better.
