”Tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

You gotta do what you gotta do.  It hurts at first but it is so worth it.

IMG 6479

I was the first person at the indoor track this morning.  I felt pretty cool about that.

IMG 6486

The reason we were on the indoor track instead of outside is because this is what it looks like outside today…  speed work and snow/ice do not mix well together.

IMG 6487

It was hot inside.  I think our bodies are used to cold weather running so today’s workout kind of killed all three of us off.  We did somewhere around 9 miles total.  Our gamins obviously didn’t work inside so I didn’t even bring a watch but the other girls brought stop watches.  I kind of love not wearing a garmin and basing everything on effort.

5 times around this track is a mile… I am kind of dizzy after 9 miles of this.

Warm-up for 2ish miles.

1 mile in 6:02

Recovery Jog

5 x 1 time around the track at about a 5:25 min/mile pace.  (I really think we could have done more if we were outside but the stuffiness of the indoor track almost killed me.  I promise I’m not being dramatic… okay, I kind of am but it was hot).  Recovery jogs after each interval.

Few miles for the cool-down.

We were all spent by the end and commented on how it felt so good to have tired legs.  Anyone else crave that feeling or are we just nuts?  Probably nuts.

IMG 6485

A reader sent me this quote and I always think about it when I am wanting to quit during a run (or when life gets really hard):

“Tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

Amazing right?!

Brooke’s interpretation of a pop-up book is that you tear out all of the parts that pop-up.  I guess we should have waited a few more months for a book like this.

IMG 6497

And a picture of a friend’s running outfit for running in -37 degrees in Toronto.  Wow. Now that is hardcore.

You have motivated me to do speed work tonight instead of a regular run.
Best part of my day will be leaving the office and going home to my 13 month old. Her face is the best part of everyday! She does the same thing with her popup books. I’ve tried taping them down and it seems to help give a fold effect instead of pop ;)

Reply

Fudge covered Oreos. The end.

Reply

Today was a rest day for me. I would love to have a gym with an indoor track, that’s cool! Are you constantly passing people?!

Oh and my 2 yr old also tears out all the pop up books! Lol gotta love them.

Reply

Whoa that is an impressive cold run!

Best part of today was finishing my conference paper, second best was getting miles in this morning before the rain started! My speed session is tomorrow, also indoors :( I’ll be thinking of your quote when I do it!

Reply

Best part of the day so far…. lunch for sure. Had some chicken and green beans along with some awasome conversation about the stages of talking/dating/in a relationship. I need to start blogging about lunch bunch convos… they are a trip.

Reply

I actually ran outside today! I wore my running tights and my husband’s thermal running pants, but I didn’t die from the cold. So I’m counting that as a victory. Plus, now I have an exhausted pup on my hands and that was the goal in the first place.

We had an indoor track like that in college and running on it was awful. It really does get claustrophobically stuffy and it’s just so boring!

Reply

Haha, we don’t give Max pop up books for the same reason :-)

Oh man – that Toronto runner is pretty much what Ottawa runners always look like in winter. But people still run in the cold #troopers

Reply

That is a sweet indoor track! When I was in college ours was so much smaller and really grungy-looking compared to that one. LOL about the pop-ups…I could have told you that! But isn’t it so fun to see their excitement that ONE time they get to see the undamaged book? Lift-the-flap books are similarly entertaining and quickly destroyed but you can fairly easily tape the flaps back on. Little “mom tip” for ya ;-)

The best part of my Wednesday so far was finding out that I didn’t alienate a potential surgeon and that I can have it done as early as mid-March! YAY! So tired of hurting.

Reply

You girls are crazy. Crazy awesome. And I love you all.

I think the best part of my day has yet to happen and will probably happen in t minus 4.5hrs. Yay!!! :)

Reply

I LOVE tired legs! And eating after a track workout is always the best! What is the verdict on the chocolate FMW???

Best part of my Wednesday so far…5.6 mile run outside (in the freezing cold) with my running buddy. :)

Reply

Wow, I hate having to go around a track 4 times for a mile, 5 would do me in! Sounds like although it was a tough workout you had a good time!

Reply

eating food, pretty much always the best part of my day ;) Although I will put getting in a run as second

Reply

Tonight is a speedwork night for me too, but I cannot imagine doing as many miles as you! My speedwork nights are usually 4 miles and I am completely tired and ready to be done after that ;)

Also for -37 I don’t think your friend is wearing nearly enough layers! That jacket looks really light! Please tell me she ended up putting more layers on?!!!

Reply

The jacket is very heavy and I was sweating – a lot! haha. I also had thermal running tights on underneath the sweats. :)

Reply

Sweating?! WOW! I am really impressed by this! I guess since I thought my run in 55 degrees yesterday was really cold, my south Florida roots are showing, hahha

Reply

I love your mittens!

Reply

Maybe she meant -37 degrees Celsius? As opposed to Fahrenheit. It is a little bit warmer, but still crazy cold.

Reply

It was Celsius, yes – that’s how we roll in Canada! So it was only -34.6 Fahrenheit ….

Reply

Ah, so many memories of that indoor track and the hundred volleyball games I watched in the gym!

The best part of my day hasn’t happened yet, but I have a date and I get to see a lot of my friends for the first time in a while!

Reply

That winter wonderland looks like perfect running weather ;-) Great job on your speed work!!!

The best part of my Wednesday was having the 20 week anatomy scan and everything going great with our baby girl! I can’t wait to meet her.

Reply

Love that quote and really love the tired leg feeling – as much as it hurts to push myself through the speedwork and miles, nothing beats the end result of feeling tired. Only another runner can understand lol.

Reply

My indoor speedwork today was great!!

But im sooo ready for spring and better temps…

Reply

My alarm today was 4:55 as well. Setting it for the 4 o’clock hour seems so painful to me, but I can handle 4:55, anything earlier, no. ;) I wish I had access to an indoor track. It was treadmill for me, and truthfully the run has been the best part of my day so far. I’m looking forward to catching up on Biggest Loser on my DVR tonight!

Reply

I took a nap after work! It was glorious!

Reply

Sleeping in because it was a rest day, then texting a friend who is thousands of miles away!

Reply

I don’t think that’s crazy, I love feeling tired after a workout! If I don’t I feel like I haven’t worked hard enough!

Best part of today… Climbing into bed at 8pm with a square of dark chocolate to nibble on and the promise if a lie-in after an early start today for triathlon spin and brick training (now that killed my quads!)

Reply

“Tough runs don’t last. Tough runners do.”

Reply

Okay, I really like that!

Reply

I facetimed my mom during my treadmill run!

http://nyviewsnikeshoes.com

Reply

That is amazing.

Reply

Really like that quote.

My best bit today was my tempo run – I was really happy with my splits for the first time for a while now! My fave motto of the moment is ‘How bad do you want it?’. I’m training for a 10k PR and it really focussed my mind!

Reply

I cannot believe you can run 5:25 miles! You are insane!!

Reply

We have an indoor track but it’s only 125 metres or something so it’s hard to run on for too long.

I’m not sure what kind of garmin you use but with my 405 Garmin I bought the optional footpod so I can track my mileage on a treadmill or indoors. It makes it easy to keep track of my mileage for the year as well.

For the rare time I’m without my garmin, I’ll input the approximate time and distance into the Garmin upload center manually.

Reply

I love that saying, another one I love that’s kind of in the same spirit (to me anyway) is:
“Let everything happen to you. Beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.”
-Rainer Maria Rilke
Best part of my day was probably my nap, it is a rest day for me after all :)

Reply

I’m in awe. I can’t believe you did 9 miles around a track inside.. I would die. I did two the other day and I hate the turn although on this indoor track you have to do 7.5 laps for one mile. Great job!!

Best part about our Wednesday is my son is out of school due to weather again so we all stayed up late and woke up late. Had a yummy breakfast together and a full day of playing and making Japanese Kracie Candy. Pretty good day.

Reply

-37?!?! Is that even safe?! Best part of Wednesday so far is my hot shower after my cold run :)

Reply

it’s true. that’s what I am dealing with these days. :(

Reply

My indoor track (where I will be spending tomorrow evening) is 8 laps to a mile. I’m kind of jealous of yours :) Great job at the workout! I was up at 4 a.m. (not on purpose… some mornings I just wake up!), at the gym by 5:30.

My friend’s son did the exact same thing with the pop-up books! Those angelic beings can be so destructive ;) Hee hee.

Off to dinner with a friend! Good day here too… although now I am ready for bed almost 14 hours after waking up…

Thanks for that quote – I’ll definitely keep it in mind during tough workouts.

Have a good night!

Reply

My dad always used to tell me, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”

Reply

I live near Toronto, and your friend has a lot more balls than I do…I wouldn’t even go outside in yesterday’s weather!

Reply

Ahhhh! 9 miles around a track! That makes my measly 4.5 on the treadmill look like a pleasure cruise!

Best part of my Wednesday was my run. Even though it was slow and had to be done on a treadmill I’m just happy to have logged some miles. Phew!

Reply

Holy geez! That is hardcore, then again running 45 laps around an indoor track is pretty hardcore too :)

The best part of my Wednesday is that I am currently eating chocolate covered espresso beans. Amesomesauce!

Reply

There has been nothing good this wednesday. My work is killing me. The end.

Reply

Oh man. That sounds like it was a tough workout!!

Love the quote by the way. And amen to that–tough times always endddddd.

Best part of today: snuggling with my little baby girl!

Reply

I’m thinking I will have to do my workout on the treadmill tomorrow. We don’t have an indoor track and it’s way too icy for me. This is motivating. I do agree about that statement though-you see people’s characters so much more when they are going through tough times.

Reply

I hate the indoor track stuffiness- I don’t think you were being too dramatic!! Best part of my Wednesday (so far) is it is my half day at work! But I think the best part will be going to buy new running shoes this evening :)

Reply

Best part? Hmmm….. I have lots of yummy leftovers so I don’t have to cook dinner tonight! :-)

Reply

Best part of my day: finishing all of the things on my to-do list for the day before dinner, so that my evening is free & clear! :)

Reply

Oh my gosh your friend ran in -37?!?! That hurts just thinking about it! The best part of my day is that we just went to the grocery store and my bf’s car battery was dead when we got back to the car and the nicest man helped us jump it! There really are nice people in the world :)

Reply

Speed work for me today too, 8 miles on the treadmill and you are so right, it felt good to be tired. I didn’t think I was going to finish but when I lay on the floor with my feet straight up on the wall (great recovery) I was glad that I did. Then I refueled and used the foam roller for 20 minutes. Thanks for your reminder of how to be injury free the other day. I need to take it more seriously! You rock glad you have friends to push you!

Reply

Indoor track= not as good as an outdoor track….but WAY better than treadmill :). I think it is so easy to get so wrapped up in our hard times and feel like they are going to last forever. But it is so important to remember that god is using those hard times to prepare us for something and to be someone great :)….we just need to let him!

Reply

“Indoor track= not as good as an outdoor track….but WAY better than treadmill :). ”

Agreed!!

Reply

best part of today eating chocolate chips straight from the bag.

Reply

I am trying so hard to be a morning persona and wake up. It’s such a struggle because I love sleep so much. I hope I can one day hit my goal of being a morning person.

The best part of my day is I’m making hot dogs and mac and cheese for dinner!

Reply

Best part of my day was going to the gym with my mom at 5:00 AM where we conversed on side by side treadmills. And then. AND THEN… she actually ran a few steps a few different times! After our workout, I asked her if she had ran on purpose or just hit the wrong buttons. She ran on purpose! What, what!

Reply

I loved hot yoga today! Especially since our heat is slacking and hasn’t gone about 60 in two days.

Reply

You are killing your runs lately!!! I love hearing about all of them.
And, those pop-up books – great but we ruined a great many of them early on, too!! (you would think I would have learned sooner but….)

Reply

Thanks for this….I’m going through some tough stuff including finding out my job is being eliminated in April and this post gave me a little hope. I’m skilled and I’m tough and I WILL find the perfect job!!! Also, this inspires me to train HARD for my first Half-Marathon. I’ve been trying to run after work because I’m too lazy to get up at 4:40AM to train…NO MORE! I’m going to do it! ;)

Reply

What a great workout! We don’t have any indoor tracks in my area.

Reply

You are amazing!!! That is NOT a time I ever want to see with my eyeballs ;) I guess I’ll have no choice once this baby comes, though! The best part of my day was having an ultrasound and seeing our little one moving all around in there. So cool!

xo

Reply

The best part of my day was a very successful circle time with 10 two year olds. It’s always a triumph when we get them all to sit still for a few minutes! :)

Reply

Getting a short run in and then not dying during day two of Focus T25 was definitely my best part.

Reply

I had a facial today so that was pretty awesome part of my Wednesday.

I also stood and supervised my 8 yo daughter make a blueberry cornbread recipe all by herself today. She’s been helping me cook for a long time (cracking eggs at 2) but I’m really trying to teach her how to do it by herself. It turned out great! We are trying to cook our way thru this United States cookbook and we are on Maine today (you would think lobster but nope, they are also famous for blueberries??)
Tomorrow is Boston Baked Beans.

I remember the days all my kids destroyed pop up books. I had a little chuckle here seeing Brooke’s picture of tearing one up.

Now I have to drive to the airport in rush hour traffic to pick up my mom. IT should be anxiety free, right? ;)

Reply

#hardcorerunner! I would never run in temperatures below 20 degrees. But I am also a wimp ;) I ran 5 miles and walked another 1 today! Love jamming out to country music!

Reply

Your speed always amazes me. I can run a 9 min mile..on a good day. But what makes fast runners fast without slower ones, right? I’m just trying to make you look good : )

Love that quote as well, and a recent one that popped in my head that I love is “The worst you can do is fail.” It just reminds me to try my hardest and the worst that can happen is to fail. Life goes on, and you can try again.

Reply

My run and spin workout and my husband passing a big board exam for Medical School!! woo hoo! we are one step closer to MOVING!! :)

Reply

Best part of my Wednesday is getting home from the gym after work, showering, and crawling into sweats with a messy bun in my hair!! Haha, lazy!

Reply

That is one of my absolute favorite quotes! It was my senior quote in high school.

Best part: I’m about to go to my bible study group with my girls. We haven’t seen each other in a few weeks because of the holidays – so I know it’ll be the best part :)

Reply

Yup! That’s what us Toronto runners look like! Bundled up to the max! The best part of Wednesday is that I have nothing to do tonight except sit on the couch, work on my blog and watch tv. Oh and go to bed early!

Reply

Wow, your friend is seriously hardcore!!!! I finally got sick of the cold weather yesterday and ran on a friend’s treadmill so I didn’t have to brave the elements!

Reply

Augh speed word… I always feel like I’m going to throw up. But the good part is it WORKS. I never ran on an indoor track before.

Reply

Running a hard workout in the Seattle rain and following it up with a steamy hot cup of cocoa!

Thanks for keeping it real, Janae! I enjoy reading the most when you’re honest and authentic.

Reply

Today was a special Wednesday… I ran 26.2 miles! I wanted to run 26 for my 26th birthday, but I ran it early since I’m starting my marathon training soon.
Hehe NorCal has no indoor tracks that I know of because it’s been in the 50’s this winter.

Reply

My trainers at the gym always tell me that the hardest parts of the workout is where you’re actually building strength, and I can see that applying to life, too. During the toughest times is where you’re going to get stronger and if you give up, you’re never going to make progress. Best part of my workout today was having a workout buddy at the gym! I never have a workout buddy, so I’m hoping I can motivate her to stick around with me! :)

Reply

Getting my room/bathroom organized and clean! My head feels a billion times more organized when my room is.

Reply

When V tore out the pop ups, I would tape them back in, and remind him he “broke them”

Reply

Best thing about today, is that it’s supposed to start warming up now. I’m more than ready for some 30 degrees temps instead of 10. Your friend in Toronto is hardcore. I will not complain about running in 20 degrees any longer.

Reply

hardcore running outfit for sure! She’s dedicated!!

Reply

My three year old shares Brooke’s interpretation of pop-out books. This is why I haven’t given him the Sound of Music pop-out book yet (mostly because I want it!).

Reply

Tired legs are the best!! And on an indoor track..those make me really dizzy after a while. 9 miles for a speed workout is awesome!!

I decided to be extra grateful today because we did not have to deal with any polar freezing in SoCal. Best part of my day was taking my dogs mountain biking after work and finishing off the day with a run to loosen up my legs. Now for some icing and couch cuddle time with my fur-kids :)

Reply

The best part of today is the following:
1. We’ve had so much snow that I haven’t been to work in three weeks (I teach, yay!)
2. I’ve spent tons of time with my little girl (she’s 14 months) and today she decided to use the potty.
3. I ran the furthest I’ve ever ran in my lifetime today.

:) It’s been a good day!

Reply

That quote is awesome and things always do get better!
OMG I can’t even start to comprehend how you are able to run in that cold weather. I know I wouldn’t last 2 seconds.

Reply

The best part of my Wednesday? Coming home to my AMAZING husband who sits and hangs out with me while I run on the treadmill, no matter how long it is! And the running part in itself is obviously amazing! I keep saying that I need to get up early to “get my run out of the way” but lately, I’ve been appreciating the fact that I can come home and run after work. It helps me relax after a crazy day at the office. If I didn’t have running after work, I’d probably be fat or be an alcoholic, because I wouldn’t know how to deal with the stress…

Reply

Gosh you are just so crazy fast girl!! Amazing! I just had another cross training/weight training today…nothing hard. I haven’t had a good, hard run in a while and I am desperately craving it! I want those tired legs, sometimes they just feel so good :)

Reply

Best part of the day: finally getting off work for the night.

Worst part of the day: being at work at 6am, and ending the day with a 3.5 hour meeting that didn’t get out until 830pm.

Reply

Wow. You inspire me. Forty five times around a track and a 6-min mile? You’re so cool!

My two Wednesday faves: looking at a princess look and find book with my girls and a new episode of Modern Family!

Reply

Gotta love those pre-5 AM wake up calls! 5 laps to the mile doesn’t sound too bad… in high school our indoor track was 12 LAPS to the mile. Running the mile and two miles at one meet was awful on that track! haha

Reply

I love that quote! It is so true! I also wish I was as speedy as you are. Not sure I’ll ever be that fast but I’m cool with that :)
My favorite part of today was the fact that I just signed up for my first triathlon ever (olympic distance) and I’m totally excited and totally scared. I think that’s a sign of a good goal.

Reply

Ummm…..#1 Toronto girl’s outfit doesn’t look nearly warm enough for the conditions described!!!! #2 I used to be a member at a gym with a track like that and although I loved running on the heavenly paddedness, I definitely couldn’t stand more than a couple of miles on it due to the dizzy factor……and I don’t even run fast!

Reply

I NEED to find an indoor track ASAP (AND a crazy group to join me).
The Best part of my Wednesday was finally getting around to contacting potential running coaches…although I still hope to be able to work with yours : )

Reply

Realizing that the ONLY thing stopping me from running in less than ideal temperatures was ME.

I love that you have crazy friends to run with…i’m about to send out a personal ad-“Runner Seeks Other Runner Friends For Running Fun”. ((Sigh))

Reply

I am new enough to running that I haven’t started speed work yet (I actually just blogged about that today… starting running, not speed work) but I wish I had a track nearby to run at. Off to see if I can run at any of the local schools!

Reply

Wednesday are my rest days. After an extreamly crazy day at work I couldn’t wait to get home, put on sweats, grab a cup of coffee and snuggle on the couch with my pup. it was wonderful!

Reply

great speed sesh Janae!!! I bet it’s so fun to run with Rachelle!! you two are a couple of my favorite ladies. :)

Reply

What a great quote, and I can’t even imagine how hot it was in there, especially as more people came in to run!

Reply

Another good quote is “Runners never quit, and quitters never run.”

Reply

Not crazy!! I loooooooove being sore… my husband thinks I’m nuts but I like the reminder that I worked hard! My favorite ever is the day after a race :)

Reply

My daughter feels the same way about pop up books.

Reply

There is something good about feeling completely spent after a workout! I’m not sure what it is, though… maybe endorphins or something.

And awesome job to your friend in Toronto! Lately it’s been in the -20F’s around here and I’ve been opting for the treadmill :)

Reply

Seeing “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”…..I totally recommend it! :)
It may make your heart smile.

Reply

Bikram track? It would be tough to do track work inside (unless it’s stadium-like). Great job!

Reply

Hot Yoga on a cold day! I’m also looking forward to my daughters hockey game tonight!

Reply

I am 10x hotter at the gym than my outdoor runs!
Amazing pace & I would love to try a track. I have never done it!

Reply

I LOVE the feeling of soreness! I thought I was alone lol! Yet another reason running applies to life… it hurts now but we’re stronger in the end!

Reply

I started running indoors because it was dark out, and after two miles on the treadmill, I couldn’t take it anymore. It was out the door with my knuckle lights to make an even six miles. Afterwards, I did major squat and ab work, so I’m walking a little stiff today. Pain is temporary, pride is forever. :-D

Best part of Wednesday- it’s finally getting warmer out.
