We really got crazy and had waffles instead of pancakes on Sunday morning. Pants are always optional.
How Brooke makes it all the way through church—> She loves drawing and it keeps her extremely entertained. Also, a lot of fruit snacks and honey wheat pretzels from Trader Joe’s are consumed during this time.
We had three birthdays to celebrate last night. My brother-in-law requested my mom’s homemade lasagna. I can’t even begin to tell you how badly my soul needed some of this lasagna. It is a miracle food.

I was in charge of the desserts for the night and the below picture is to tell you about how good of a shoulder workout it is to make homemade oreos. My left shoulder was legitimately tired after mixing up the dough.
#worthit. I really don’t like hash tags but sometimes they are necessary.
I also made my favorite ice cream and oreo cake. When I went in and caught my niece and nephew in the freezer they told me that they just wanted to admire it for a while.

Does Brooke not make a ton of noise in church? We had to stop going because Evan talks throughout the entire Mass (he doesn’t actually talk yet but he says a very serious and loud “Da”). They don’t have a nursery or kids room and people were always giving us the Look, so now we just don’t go. I guess we’ll go again when he’s a bit older and understands how to be quiet. We tried to bring activities for him and they kept him happy, but he still wanted to talk and give me very loud kisses. Any advice from church-going parents???

No advice here, just wanted to let you know you aren’t alone. We have also stopped going for the time being. My son is 14 months old, and we just can’t keep him corraled or quiet. On Christmas, my husband took him home half way through mass.

Yes, we are in the same boat. Yesterday my husband took my son to play in the hallway after the first five minutes and they came back as we were singing the last hymn. Fun times!

Ah, the noisy baby in Mass- I’ve been there!! Please don’t feel like you have to stop going though! Our parish didn’t have a nursery for a long time (pretty much the whole time that my kids were toddlers), and I got lots of Looks. But our priest did a good job of just saying straight out during the homily one time “I like hearing a low murmur of kids in Mass. You’re raising the next generation of Christians and that’s important. Never feel like you can’t be here!”
Also, I asked around if there was a more “kid friendly” Mass and went to that one. Apparently, all the hard- core’s went at 8:30, but all the families with small kids went at 11:30. My kids became part of a chorus of small children.
One other thing that friends of mine did was join together and do sort of a co-op. They each took turns watching the other kids so that the parents only missed Mass once every three or four weeks instead of every week.

Kate – I totally agree with your preist. Mine are 6 and 2.5 and I sit in the 2nd to the front pew every week even though my 2.5 yo walks around everywhere (even up to the altar). The pastors joke that my little one will be a pastor one day :) My personal philosophy is that if a church wants to grow, they have to be accommodating of young families. That’s just the way it is. I try to keep the disruptions to a minimum, but I need my weekly church fix and my girls need to learn how to behave in church. Neither one of these things can happen if we aren’t actually in the pews.
Kattrina, Nikki, good luck and I hope you find a place that is welcoming for you and your little ones! A former pastor of ours likened the sound of children in church to the sound of birds in the forest. Just part of nature!

We tried the children’s mass, but it was SO crowded that we didn’t enjoy it. I have a feeling we are at the hard-corer’s 9am mass! I try to tell myself that the church is against birth control so everyone in there should be understanding of children, but it’s hard when you’re the only one with a child screaming throughout the quiet times of mass!

Google an article called “Teach kids to sit still” by domestic fringe. It talks about how she taught her children to sit still and be quiet in church. I have 3 kids (9, 5, 16 mo) and have worshipped with all of them right with me nice they were newborns. She has some good ideas, common sense really.

I don’t think I have either. This is a fun idea HRG had! I’m guessing, with a blinding flash of the obvious, that you are a runner. What distances etc.? I’m mainly a half-marathoner but trained for my first full which should have been Sunday, Dec 8–the Dallas Marathon. But an ice storm caused it to be cancelled on the Friday. As I had already carb-loaded for the race, I just continued with that program through Christmas and New Year and am now trying to figure out how to lose 4 lbs. I’m signed up for a substitute marathon on Feb. 23 in Fort Worth.

I made Homemade Oreo’s yesterday too, but they turned out absolutely horrible and I ended up throwing them out…which I was so bummed about until now and I read your post…in which I will have to use your recipe. Did the the chocolate cookie part turn out chewy or more crunchy like?
