Running Soul Mates

We love to do completely normal things at 5 a.m.

IMG 7344

You would think that the lack of sleep would make us tired and boring but no we always end up having a little too much energy.

IMG 7343

11 miles total at an average pace of 8:15.  It felt great to get the legs moving but they are not interested in doing anything fast until at least Wednesday.

We ran on the same trail that I did last week when I fell on the ice and hit my head.  Talk about paranoid.  I kept seeing phantom ice patches.  My ice phobia is out of control now and luckily today I stayed upright the entire run.

I am really lucky to have found my running partner Josse because we have the same running goals and races up ahead which I think is going to be huge for me.  We both have different strengths and we can help each other in those areas.   We are also both moms that need to be home from our run when our kiddos wake up.  2014 is going to be our year.  Now to just get Rachelle to move closer to us so that we can run every day together.

It has been like a whole week since I have been to Target?!  Seriously.

This is Brooke showing me that the stuffed animal she wanted was only $3 and so that means that of course she needs it.

Most exciting purchase of the new year.  Just a few days late but there is something about planners that make me happy.  Yes I could put everything in my phone but I just like writing things down much more.  I got a big one so that I can include my running notes each day so that I have a paper copy of how my training is going and what does/doesn’t work when it comes to my running (and things like fuel during a race, long run and what to eat before I run).

Mixing bowl salads with weird looking sweet potatoes are still occurring.  My Runner’s World issue had a MOVIE in it from Brooks.

I feel the same way about planners, I love to write things down. I just started tracking my workouts in a notebook and its really making a difference to me because I can see how much I’m improving, its super motivating.

I love that Brooke was holding up the price tag, I wouldn’t be able to say no to that face. And of course it was a dog stuffed animal, haha. You’ve got to get that girl a dog!

I use a good, old-fashioned, real planner!

I like to freeze chic chip cookies…yum!

I am 100% on the side of the planner. I have a few for each year…one for everyday To Do lists, and one that is more of a diary of sorts (my exercise log, fun stuff I did, etc.). To me, nothing beats a physical planner that I can pull out and write in.

I wish I could find a running soul mate. Nothing yet…

Reply

I got that exact same planner!! I’m the same way- even though I’m always on the computer/phone/ipad, when it comes to scheduling I write it all down by hand. I’ve also been trying to record my running and food to watch for patterns in running.

Glad you got your Target fix! I need that store in my life weekly too.

Totally rely on my sweet One Direction calendar/planner. Using my phone just is not the same.

Reeces & KitKat frozen are amazing!

Reply

Frozen berries are awesome in the summer! Also freezing juice and using it as ice cubes is refreshing. I’m not much for frozen desserts though, I prefer warm undercooked, brownies, cookies, cakes etc. :-)

Reply

“under cooked”. haha. YES YES YES! We are the same way. Rather have them under cooked than even slightly burned! And if my hubby wasn’t a hypochondriac and worried about raw eggs, I wouldn’t ever BAKE any doughs! haha

Reply

I use a planner AND my phone! I have to agree that bananas are delicious frozen :)

Reply

Please put more photos of Brooke, it makes the world a hapier place :)

Reply

I definitely hope that means you bought the little cutie the doggie?

Reply

I need to go to Target tomorrow! ha!

Frozen REESE PB CUPS. Doooooooo it!

Reply

i LOVE my paper planners and will never give them up! My iPhone does not compare!

Reply

I have that same planner, in both big and small, because I am ridiculous and addicted to planners. haha! They’re just so cute, thouuuugh! :) I write all of my detailed workouts and notes in the big one, too! YES to frozen bananas and frozen chocolate- always.

xo

Reply

totally agree on the bananas and now I am dying to try some frozen reese’s!!

Reply

I could never say No to Brooke, even if the toy was $30 dollars. Her face makes me melt. Too adorable!!!
I use a planner, I have to write things down. I love to freeze grapes but not chocolate.
My cousin was my running soul mate and she can never be replaced, too bad we now live in different states. :(

Reply

I use a Fast Running Blog. It is super easy to use and I like all the graphs on it :). Plus I like bring able to read all the local race reports. I can put my shoe mileage, weight, hours of sleep, fast miles, slow miles. I’m kinda a numbers gal and it totally meets my needs :)

You and Josse are going to do great things this year with running!

Reply

I love to have a paper, tangible planner! I do use my phone/computer, but there is just something about the real thing!
I love frozen Snickers bars! Reese’s and York Peppermint Patties are up there too!
I have not found a running sole mate yet, but I am always looking ;P

Reply

I stopped using planners when I got a smart phone. Too complicated to carry a binder & I’m always trying to find ways to declutter my life. Lol!
I love freezing fresh strawberries & putting in my oatmeal. Bananas I never thought of!

Reply

I have a little calender that I write in, but I think I need that planner. Bigger boxes for notes :)
OMG. Frozen Milky Ways. I completely forgot about those. I have to try that again!

Reply

I’m obsessed with planners! Will you take a picture of the inside so I can know what it looks like? Or where did you get it so I can check it out myself.. #nerd

Reply

I guess I am just old fashioned…love writing things down so I love planners too. I saw the same one you showed at Target. I dont use my phone except for pictures, calling, and texting. Lists, etc….all written down :) I also like to write a check and mail it instead of paying on line :) My favorite bad food to freeze ~ Snickers and Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies; good foods ~ grapes and blueberries :)

Reply

I sure hope you bought her that dog because that face is certifiably irresistible!!

Reply

I have a moleskin planner that I LOVE! I use my phone calendar for some stuff but I feel like handwritten planner keeps me more organized.

Reply

I use both…the phone calendar when out and about but when I am home I have the paper calendar by my computer that logs everything!!! Sometimes I feel if the house were on fire I would grab for my calendar before the cats. (OK…I for sure would do that…b/c I know one of the kiddos would go for the animals first…ha!)

Hmmm…frozen? Have to be any thing chocolate!!

Reply

I am so old-school and like to write things down vs. use my phone. I have a planner and feel much more organized when I use it…I always kept a frozen stash of chocolate in the freezer – reeses peanut butter cups, twix, snickers, muskateers, Hershey bars – any chocolate bar I guess. . Cake truffles are good straight from the freezer as well. I also used to freeze pudding cups and eat them half frozen.

Reply

I calendar on google. I used to use an old school paper one, but when it’s online my husband and I can sync our calendars together and we can access them wherever we are. It’s the best thing we ever did.

I do like writing things down though. If I take notes on something I remember it much better if I write it down than if I type it.

Reply

I like to write things down, so paper planners are always the way to go for me. I use my phone calendar but I rarely follow it- my paper one is my go to.

I freeze almost all candy/sweets. I don’t know why but they taste so much better. OH and grapes! :)

Reply

Paper planner is my preference.
I have frozen bananas and grapes. I used to freeze snickers bars and eat the chocolate off one day and eat the rest another day. Weird. I was in high school.
Still searching for the running BFF.

Reply

Everything is on my phone which means I should back it up more often, or actually use iCloud.

I totally agree that frozen Thin Mints are the best! Also, frozen M&M’s are awesome!

Reply

I have recently fallen IN LOVE with frozen bananas. I swear it makes them 10X better.

Reply

I love old school, hard schedules rather than using my phone. I just love having it physically on paper rather than on my phone where it could get randomly deleted!

Reply

I use both a planner and my iPhone, which makes me a total scatterbrain! I love the convenience of my phone, but hate entering things (so much easier to write it down). Plus, I love a planner especially a cute one. :) Best things frozen… Snickers!

How cold is it at 5am there?

It’s like 0 here and I am most certainly not getting out there at that time LOL.

Reply

That is so great that you have a running partner! I used to have one that had the same goals as me and we ended up qualifying for and running Boston together. She was such a great inspiration, but now she lives in another city and I rarely get to see her and her family.

I love frozen berries and mangoes! Another thing I recently started liking frozen is almond joy and chocolate covered pretzels- DELICIOUS!

Reply

Love a good planner!! Just got a new “Erin Condren” planner and i am obsessed! So great and love that it divides each day up into “morning, afternoon & night” plus has an area for goals each week!
Also, love how it can be customized… Your planner definitely needs a photo of Brooke on the back! :) you should get one!

Reply

I wouldn’t exist without a planner. I have one of those academic minister ones because I work in the school which gives you an hour by hour from July-June. No year starts in January…that’s just ludicrous (FYI- I had to look up how to spell that because Ludacris is the only way I know how to spell it anymore. LUDA!).

Reply

I love using a planner – I am going to get one to plan and record my workouts :)

Reply

I use both, I use my phone for appointments and workouts and then a planner for detail of my workouts. Can never keep track enough! LOL!

Reply

I got the smaller version of that planner! I LOVE it. Planners make me all giggly inside.

I love frozen grapes – and bananas. I like frozen chocolate chips too. Yummm.

Yes, my daddy. We’re not the same speed or anything, but it’s “our time” and I LOVE it. I’m so blessed.

Reply

I am addicted to my Erin Condren planners…I spend a small fortune on them each year!

I LOVE frozen grapes. And M&Ms!

My running partner lives about 4 hours away. :/

Reply

I generally just use my phone and my computer as my planner, but I know what you mean about writing something down. Sometimes it is just nicer that way :) I love freezing chocolate! Frozen grapes are pretty good too. I have yet to find my running partner soul mate ha. I generally run with my sister if I am going to run with anyone, but most of the time I just run alone.

Reply

I now only use my phone. It’s nice to put in reminders, too. I used to get planners, but my little purse is too small for one anyways.

Reply

I agree with you on the planner! There is just something about writing things down! Thanks for sharing the frozen foods list – I will have to try those!

Reply

I use a planner for my running/fitness and as a gratitude journal. Then I use my phone for work and personal stuff. I much prefer writing things down but I find I forget to bring a planner with me so the phone is better for the things I will need to know while I’m out.

Reply

I have a running partner, and even though we aren’t quite the same speed, it works out, and I wouldn’t want to do it without her. There aren’t many people training for ultra races around here, so I feel extremely lucky to have found someone that shares my passion for long-distance trail running.

I think that’s a great idea for that planner! I record all my mileage and notes in a running journal, and I agree–I like having it on paper.

Reply

I like putting stuff into my phone and writing it down too. Redundant but there is just something about a planner. I wish I could find my running sole mate, I’m really slow and all my friends are Speedy Gonzales :) I love almost all forms of chocolate frozen-yum! I am totally addicted to roasted sweet potatoes right now also. Cannot eat enough of them!

Reply

My mother in law gave me a ton of Reese’s PB Eggs last Easter. In an effort not to eat them all at once, I stuck them in the freezer as my self control. Big mistake. You know what’s even better than Reese’s Eggs? Frozen Eggs. You can guess how well that plan turned out :)

Reply

Yess no bakes in the freezer! And fudge too.

Reply

mhmmm, I could go for a frozen reese’s cup right now. I haven’t found my running soulmate yet, but I still have hope I’ll find them one day.

Reply

From the list – I LOVE frozen grape! To add to the list – frozen M&M’s! So good!

Reply

I love to freeze protein bars! Especially Think Thin and Luna Bars! They are both better cold!

Reply

I can vouch for how good the mint patties are frozen…….now to try the milky way

Reply

I’ve had frozen Reese’s and they are seriously the bomb! :)

Reply

All Girl Scout cookies should be kept in the freezer. ESPECIALLY Thin Mints. The best. I am with you, I love a paper planner.

Reply

I like to write mine down as well, so much better than a phone calendar.
I love any frozen fruit !
I’m weird and don’t like to run with people! I wish I did!

Reply

I keep trying to like using the calendar on my phone but I just don’t! I go the pen and paper route, though I don’t have an official planner or anything.

I like freezing grapes, they’re tiny little popsicles. I haven’t tried freezing anything gummi, I’ll have to test that one out one of these days (if I can keep from eating them long enough for them to freeze!).

Reply

I just had to comment because I’m eating frozen mango chunks RIGHT NOW! Too good (even distracted me from wanting chocolate). But I have to ask about the gummy bears in the photo?!? How could they include gummy bears? They get so hard and they’re so cold you can’t even taste their tiny little bear-y deliciousness! Confused.

Reply

I love frozen gummy bears!

Reply

I have a Kate Spade planner for this year, and I love it! It’s so much more satisfying writing down workouts etc in a planner, rather than just typing it in my phone. I like seeing everything laid out in front of me :)

Reply

I love frozen 3 Musketeers! DELICIOUS! Oh and Thin Mints – those are good too. Frozen fruit is also usually on the top of my list!

Reply

Yes, thin mints and 3 Musketeers! I can’t eat 3 Musketeers unless they are frozen….it totally changes how they taste!

Reply

I love to freeze most types of chocolate bars – especially KitKats! I have a planner on my phone, but I’m not very good at using it…I need to get better at that.

Reply

You can freeze chocolate pudding?!

Reply

Peppermint patties, mangoes, and reese’s cups are my favorite to freeze. i have a planner that I use for school but nothing else really. So glad you’ve found your running soulmate :)

Reply

I have a planner too. I just like writing down things, and then crossing them off. It’s weird, but it works. Haha!
I’m SO happy you found your perfect running partner. I think I JUST found mine too. She is the sweetest person ever & we have similar goals too. So much fun running with someone who ‘gets’ all of this running stuff. ;)

Reply

I like writing in a planner too! I tried using my phone’s calendar and “notepad” app last year and it just doesn’t work for me. I feel like it is just easier to write it down on paper. And use up a tree…as I sit staring at all my recycling…I make so much sense. When I used to drink milk, I LOVED it slightly frozen! Definitely pb cups frozen. And wine glasses. I keep 2 wine glasses in my freezer so that when my mom comes over, we have nice, frosty wine glasses. :)

Reply

I love my planner, I love being able to write down everything and see what needs to be done!

Reply

don’t forget about girl scout cookies so much better frozen!

Reply

My 3 year old fell in love with the same dog at Target! He’s taken to carrying it EVERYWHERE.

Reply

I love real planners too! One thing I keep track of is how many miles are on each pair of running shoes. Everyone says I could use an app or something like that, but I love adding up the totals every month!

Reply

Yes, I use a planner too! Writing down everything is just so much easier for me. My phone is strictly for social media creeping.

Reply

My fiancee has a weird obsession with putting things in the freezer and letting things go stale. Little Debbie strawberry short cake rolls and junior mints always go in the freezer and he swears that marshmallow peeps, popcorn and Twizzlers are better when they are stale. I think it is a texture thing.

Reply

I love having a paper planner. I have everything in my phone but getting to write things down and cross them off is amazing.

Reply

I never thought about throwing Milanos in the freezer. Putting it on my to-do list. That’s one item I might actually check off! Yum!

Reply

I have to have a paper planner! My husband tells me to get with the times but I just can’t let go of my planner…love it!
Girl Scout thin mint cookies are so delicious frozen!
And I found my soul mate running partner but we had to move for my husband’s job :( She is probably the only person that I would get up at the crack of dawn to run with!

Reply

I write everything in a planner too!

Reply

I love planners! I have a bad habit of getting excited about them for the first few months of the year then slacking off as the year goes on… I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen in 2014!!

Reply

Frozen grapes are actually the best. I always eat them before they make it to the freezer though…and swedish fish?! something I’ve never thought to freeze but I bet they’d be amazing too!

Reply

I love using my Nike App for my runs and I am able to put in notes plus it maps it and adds the weather. Frozen, I love chocolate covered bananas, those are my favorite!
You are very lucky to have your buddy to run with. I run by myself always. None of my friends run like I do :( I am hoping that running with Team In Training may help me find someone to run with.

Reply

I like using a wall calendar. Every time I buy a planner, it gets abandoned after February lol.

Btw, since you’ve been on a sweet potato kick I wanted to mention Korean (or purple) sweet potatoes. They are amazing!

Reply

I freeze a bag of Hershey Dark Chocolate with Almond nuggets and savor two after dinner every night! It’s hard not to go back for more! #willpower!

Do you have a suggested resources for proper nutrition for runners? I’m trying to figure out my calorie intake. I don’t think I am getting enough because I am ravenous by the end of the day, especially on long run days. (For me more then 9 miles). And I find myself resorting to candy and I have never been much of a sweet eater.

Reply

I have always had an obsession with planners, journals, and notebooks. I’ll buy a bunch of them and then never use them. I always do good for a month! ..and then I stop. I feel like I have to be SUPER busy in order to use them all the time.

Reply

I have to add puppy chow to that list. I LOVE frozen puppy chow. It’s the BEST!

Reply

I am 100% obsessed with my Lilly Pulitzer planner and will never ever buy any other kind. It’s colorful, has cute little stickers, pockets to put papers in, and puts me in a great mood just opening it. By far my favorite frozen treat is frozen thin mints (the Girl Scout cookie). I don’t even eat them room temp anymore. Also frozen fruit like mango, pineapple and strawberries. My running buddy is my mom! :)

Reply

I love planners! My SIL got me an Erin Condren one for my birthday last year (I hit my quarter century! ;)) I use it for everything, school, work, running, eating. You name it it’s in there!!! I’ve only had frozen chocolate candies before. I NEED to try grapes! I love grapes, I never would’ve thought to freeze them. I wish I had running friends. I am thinking about joining the local running club so I can find a street soul mate.

Reply

I LOVE a handwritten planner. Seriously, I bought a deluxe planner in August, and it’s awesome, especially for training stuff. My favorite food to freeze is bananas, cause I can use them in my smoothies in the morning, and they’re so so so tasty. And finally, I don’t think I’ve yet found a running partner soul mate. But hey, I’m still young, right?

Reply

I write everything down, and consult my planner before making ANY plans or scheduling decisions! What if I lose my phone and iCloud wasn’t backed up? How could I possibly know what was scheduled when? How would I know which week recycling comes? I would be sunk. Best to have a physical hard copy.
I have found my running soul mate. Danni is her name, and she is an angel, and very often the only reason I drag my hiny out of bed on frozen mornings!
Chocolate chip banana bread is heavenly frozen! Mmmmmmm

Reply

I buy my planner from target too, I would be so lost without it ha I also love things frozen but skittles? They would be like mini jaw breakers haha I guess you could suck on them first lol

Reply

Haha looks like I said frozen butt skittles. I meant, but frozen skittles? Lol

Reply

I’ve had wonderful training partners but never a soul mate. As for keep track of things, I use both a book planner and my phone. I don’t like carrying my book around anymore so I use the phone and then transfer stuff into the book. I definitely annotate my book a LOT!

Reply

My current training partner is exactly the same level as me which is great. When I’m having a good day I can push him and vice-versa.

Despite regularly training with him, there will always be a place for a long quiet run by myself (normally listening to MarathonTalks podcast).

The planner on my phone is the way forward. Without it, I would be lost in life…

Reply

I am a paper planner, too! I do use my phone, but I love having things written down :)

Still searching for my running soul mate….anyone anyone? :P

Reading this post just motivated me to get out of bed and get my run in before work, THANK YOU!

Reply

I keep appointments in my phone so that they can alarm when I’m supposed to be somewhere. With a 13 year old who dances 7 hours a week, is in chorus, karate, karate demo team, youth and government, and Kumon, plus school; and a 10 years old who is in cub scouts, track, karate, karate demo team, and kumon, plus school; I need to keep all of that in my phone!
My paper planner is for the day to day tasks of getting in my running, cross training, karate teaching, keeping up on house cleaning, and studying for the Bar Exam. LOVE crossing things off my list!!!

Best frozen food…strawberries and grapes

No running partner, but I’m okay with that because with everything I do all day, having an hour or so each day to just drift away with my music and not think is awesome!!

Reply

I use a paper planning…with colored gel pens and all! Except, sometimes I use a pencil for things I may want to erase due to a change of mind.
I love frozen Chocolate peanut butter cups!!!! YUM!

Reply

I just use my phone and my google calendar to keep track of things. It has worked out nicely so far.

Frozen chocolate chip cookies are AMAZING. I thought freezing them would stop me from eating them, but it only made them more delicious!

Reply

I constantly have people making fun of me because I still use paper planners :) I just like them better than my smart phone! Paper planners also make me run more – I hate seeing blank boxes in my running calendar :)

Reply

cake pops are amazing frozen! really, any cookies!

Reply

I just use a wall calendar. Cookies are so good frozen!

Please tell me that you use the Target Cartwheel app! I love it and save quite a bit of money.

Reply

Seriously runningfriends are the BEST you are so lucky to have her!!

Reply

Yes I love planners too! I keep stuff in my phone/Google calendar but I still write stuff down in my planner!

Reply

I am obsessed with planners! You are absolutely correct in that there is just something about writing things down. I’ve been known to purchase a new calendar after only months of using the first one. I love a clean slate.

Those peanut butter no bakes look amazing!

Reply

I too love planners. In December I always go and pick out my planner for the next year, it’s always an event. Last year I tried to use my phone as a planner and that just failed miserably. I am old fashioned and like to write things down!

Reply

I have the same planner! I have everything in my phone but there is just something about writing it all down…I always have a paper planner.

Reply

SO JEALOUS by your early morning motivation! You’re so lucky to have a great friend to run with in the morning!!

Reply

I freeze candy so I don’t eat it all in one sitting!

Reply

I use a planner and my phone. Good to have a backup plan.
