I went running with a professional runner today.

Thank you so much for the amazing comments in the last two posts.  You guys really are the best.

Let’s rewind a little bit to yesterday because it was very exciting;)

Brooke and I made our normal Sunday morning chocolate chip pancakes (she is getting incredibly good at scooping out the Bisquick) and then stayed home all day long in our pajamas.  I just wanted to play at home with her with zero distractions before she left.

Once Brooke left my sister came over to hang out with me, we had dinner and then my girls picked me up to go to a Christmas get together.

This morning.

I was very nervous about my run this morning.  I was nervous because I was going on a run with a professional runner.

A few stats about her—> her first 1/2 marathon was a 1:15.  She was sponsored by Nike for a few years.  She competed in the Olympic Qualifying Trials TWICE and trained in Mammoth with all of the really fast people (Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor) for a while.  Most importantly she is the nicest girl in the world.  I was very nervous I was going to slow her down for our run this morning but somehow I was able to keep up with her ‘easy’ run ha.

I tried out my new PureFlow 3s for the first time.  Wonderful.  They offer more support (in my opinion) than the 2s but still felt very light.  I just felt like my foot was more protected if that makes sense?!?  I also felt like my toes had more room to stretch out with each foot strike in the toe box.  They completely redesigned the entire shoe with this model so I hope you PureFlow lovers are happy with them too.

Haven’t seen negative splits in a very long time but I will gladly welcome them back into my life.  We had a great conversation the entire 10 miles and it was a great way to start off the week.

PS I was working so hard during this run that I started getting really hot and it was only 16 degrees out.

Selfish Christmas gift of the year—>  a gift card for my mom to get a manicure.  The reason this was selfish is because it forced her to have to come with me to get one.  She loved it and she even got gel nails and an accent nail:)  It makes my heart happy.

Lunch was with one of my good friends from college at the Zupas.  Turkey and avocado were meant to be combined.

Enjoy the rest of your Monday and eat some chocolate.

—————————————————————–

What two foods do you strongly believe are meant to be combined?

Pancakes…. do you use your own recipe or a mix like Bisquick or Krusteaz?

How was your Monday run?  How far?!

You go girl! That is such an awesome run. I am happy for you and super jealous too :) My goal for 2014 is to become a stronger and faster runner. You can do anything you put your mind to, right?

I have to run 5 miles today or tomorrow so I can hit my monthly goal of 80 miles.
I love making my own pancakes, this way there are less unnecessary ingredients in there. If you need to use a mix, Wholefoods has a great whole-wheat organic mix that is delicious.
Two foods-Easy, vanilla ice cream and apple pie :)

That run sounds amazing! I’m out of breath just thinking about it. :-) Mom and me manicures are super fun. My mom and I are doing that right now!

I LOVE pancakes!!!!! I am an Aunt Jemima or Bisquick person
My run was 8 miles in 10 degrees!!! It was cold!..but I just couldn’t bear to go on the treadmill!
Peanut butter and chocolate m&m’s…a match made in heaven!

Lauren Fleshman?!

Reply

ohh my guess too!

Reply

My vote would be Summer Sanders because she met her at the Runners World stuff and she lives in Park City :)

Reply

Peanut butter and chocolate = two best foods combined EVER. No question about it. Turkey + avocado are pretty darn good too though. ;)

How fun that you got to run with a professional runner!! You’re amazing. I would’ve had no doubt that you were going to rock the run with her! You proved me right.

I’ve already fulfilled my chocolate servings x5 in the form of Nutella today. Dangerous stuff, I tell ya!

Reply

Well I’ve never prayed this much for someone I’ve never met, but girl I’ve been praying especially hard for you the past 5 months. And am always encouraged by your posts, this week is going to be hard, but I hope you find little happy times that all add up and help you get through this week!!

Reply

Peanut butter and honey lately :) Monday run was eh…
Looking forward to getting back down to sea level haha!

Reply

I’m going to have to try peanut butter and honey. Sounds amazing!

Reply

You are sooo fast!

I think peanut butter and banana is the best combo EVER.
Sometimes I make my own pancakes but other times I use Kodiak Cakes – so yummy!!
I didn’t run today because it was in the negative degrees and I’m a wimp. I did have basketball practice though!

Reply

Sending love, hugs and prayers your way.
XOXO

Reply

You amaze me with your pace! I ran 10 today average 10:08 pace and that feels like I am working pretty hard lol

Reply

I LOVE Zupas!! Good choice. I’m too lazy to make pancakes from scratch, so it’s boxed mix all the time. I’m lamesauce.

Reply

It’s so cool you have so many run buddies! Mostly I run alone. Great job :)

Reply

I ran 4.5 at 8:59 pace. Learning to adjust to a slower pace for me during pregnancy has been extremely difficult!

Reply

:) thats speedy I am just getting to be around 8:30 after 6 months of running, started at a 10 min pace.

Reply

Pancakes from a mix. Fresh n Easy has really good chocholate chip and pumpkin pecan mixes. They are the best! I also got a waffle iron for Christmas and we are starting to make waffles. So good!

Reply

You are so dang fast!
I get to run again in 5 ish weeks woohoo!
Your mom and her accent nail? Adorable!!

Reply

You can put peanut butter with anything (almost)!

I have a theory- if you can’t pair peanut butter with a food, you can try cheese, or ranch dressing. Every food can be paired with one of those three things. K. That’s my big food theory.

I know this is a shock to many, but I can’t eat pancakes. They always weigh too heavy on my stomach after I eat them. I don’t care who makes them, how they are made, etc. I always feel horrible after eating pancakes! If I have to make them for kiddos, I do not make from scratch.

And, for the first time in 6 months, I’m fairly ashamed to say, I skipped my run today. I felt blah all day, exhausted and in a fog. Tomorrow is another day. I guess I just needed a rest day.

Your runs are always so inspiring! I’ve recently shaved about a minute off of my pace (miraculously), but one day I just might aspire to be in the 7’s! You go girl! :)

Reply

Whoooo look at those splits! So awesome, so fast… so jealous :)

A 1:15 as her FIRST half marathon? It’s a good thing that didn’t happen at my first half because I would have thought I had peaked in life and died right there at the finish line. Also, I probably would have died because my legs would have fallen off and my heart would have popped out of my chest!

Reply

I think that nachos must have salsa and jalapeños or they just don’t taste right! I always use some type of pancake mix, but I wish I had the patience to try out my own recipe :) And I didn’t run today :(

Reply

Ooo turkey and avocado is a good one… But so are eggs and avocado, salsa and avocado, and basically anything with avocado lol. My favourite combo ever may just be almond butter and chocolate, though. Throw some banana in there and you have the perfect trifecta :D

Reply

Aww yay for manicures with your mom!! Soooo cute! :) And call me crazy, but BLTs with peanut butter on them? SO good.

xo

Reply

a BLT + peanut butter….wow, that sounds amazing.

Reply

Pineapple and cottage cheese are a perfect combination. As is caramel and chocolate – does that count?

I used to be a bisquik lover until I goggled the worlds best pancakes and since they’re super easy to make, it’s my go to recipe.

Reply

Where did you find this recipe (if you don’t mind me asking)?
Thanks

Reply

Google! Here’s the recipe link: http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/21014/good-old-fashioned-pancakes

I usually sub half the All Purpose flour for whole wheat flour and it turns out pretty well. Hope you like this recipe too!

Reply

Nice run! Dying to know who you ran with!

I just got 4 miles in – all I can manage these days at 34 weeks pregnant!

Reply

Peanut Butter and Chocolate!!!!

And my husband and I are pancake snobs after discovering my grandmas awesome recipe. We make it every Saturday morning. Mine are always chocolate chip with peanut butter smeared on top :)

Reply

Do tell… Grandmas recipe.

Reply

1:15?!? Yikes. My 9 mile run Saturday was 90 minutes haha I usually use Bisquick then doctor it up with add ins like banana, pumpkin, chocolate, etc.

Reply

I will happily get on that chocolate serving ;-)

Reply

I love a lightweight shoe that still feels supportive – I just got the Adidas Energy Boots; best running shoes my feet have ever experienced. Peanut butter and anything is made to go together (specifically chocolate though!)…Hang there, this week will go super fast and Brooke will be home before you know it. I know it’s so super hard but you are doing amazing. Divorce stinks and is never easy, especially when the kids are little.

Reply

I wish you all the happiness in the world. You seem so strong. I remember my divorce and how draining it was. Running became my sanity. I love looking at your posts. You are my inspiration.
I am half marathon training with a friend. She is running it not me. I am her support. So this morning our run was 3 miles. in 40 minutes lol. We are turtles but we are out there.

Reply

I am a slowish runner, too, but instead of focusing on the time you should be so proud that you got it done! Way to go!!

Reply

Nice work on the run! Wow! Sounds intimidating but we all know you could hold your own against a pro! :-)

Reply

Way to go lady! You are blazing fast!

I’m not “a runner,” but I do run 1x or 2x per week for cardio. Today, after my TRX workout that made my upper body feel like Jello, I did a new loop that was about 3 miles [I think…maybe 1/4 mile +/-], but didn’t time myself or track my pace. Love having those “free” runs to just think and pray and enjoy the morning.

Prayers and hugs for you, doll!

bread and butter.

I make my pancakes from scratch just because I don’t eat them often enough. That should be a change I make in the new year, don’t you think?

Speedy. The way you felt running with with this person would be the way I would feel about you. You would do an easy run with 8 minute miles for me right?

Reply

Hummus and yellow mustard were meant to be combined. Try it on a sandwich! SO GOOD, I swear.

I make my pancakes from scratch because they’re one of the easiest foods to make from scratch.

You are SO FAST. Congratulations on a great run.

Reply

I am so jealous of the running. I am permanently out of running. I may be able to add in 5K distances at some point but right now I am very upset. I am slowly making my way back from my knee injury and was released from PT 2 weeks ago and allowed to be able to build race walking miles however after 1.5 miles my knee swelled and I am back down to 1 mile 3x a week. Very upsetting. I popped my knee cap out of place 2 months ago, found out I also have avascular necrosis, and severe tracking issues, and cartilage missing. So running is “not in my best interest”. But I do like reading your blog! You are very strong, and I admire the way you have built your life to do things that make you happy, despite of course having something very trying to get through.

Reply

Sorry to hear your story….after over 25 years of running (almost 42 years old) I have had many times in the past where I thought I would have to hang up the shoes. I don’t go very long (3-5 miles) or very much (3 x per week) or very fast (10+ minute mile) but I can do that. And I got really into cycling and swimming over the years so maybe after some time you can come back to just a little but of running and then find some other sports to fill the gap. Take care!

Reply

Thank you! That gives me some hope and you are right, many other sports out there!

Reply

Ran 6 miles. We do whole wheat blender pancakes. Your mile times are really fast at that temperature. I don’t know how you do it?!

Reply

So cute that your mom got an accent nail! haha. I love when my Dad does “trendy” stuff ;-)

Reply

When do the Pure Flow 3s come out? I loved the first Pure Flows but I haven’t been over the moon with the 2s. I ran 3 this morning at it was only 5 degrees! I thought my eyes were going to freeze shut during the run!

Reply

Heading out in the three degree weather. First satin a warmth prayer.

Reply

Ahem. Saying a prayer. Thanks autocorrect.

Reply

Look at you get after it this morning! Geesh. You are amazing!

My run was a measily 3 miles and then a weights circuit. But at least I did something? That is what I am telling myself these days. Man I am going to struggle when the kids get back to school, I have to wake up early and get back into my routine.

I use a recipe for pancakes. Since it requires everything I already have and I don’t have to buy something else. Soooo pretty much because I am lazy. lol.

Does peanut butter and chocolate count as something that is meant to be together? I just cant imagine my life without it ;)

Love that you and your mom got a manicure. So fun. I have been wanting to try the gels. I think it is the only way I could have color on my hands. You will have to let me know where you went and if you liked it.

Reply

I’m gonna try me some pure flows! My pure cadence have way too many miles on them! Who is the fastie? Curious minds wanna know.
So cool!
I read your blog for inspiration. This winter having my kids on break I only find time for short runs. Today only 3 miles. But I want a new PR for my half in April. Gotta get crankin.
Box pancakes like trader joes. A 7.5 minute mile is my fastest 5k lol! Fast is all relative right?
Your such a superhero u shud wear a cape when u run!

Reply

Speaking of combining foods… try cream cheese, caramel apple dip with heath on top. It’s great as a fruit dip! But not the best thing for the 100 lb. weight loss journey. It’s addicting ;)

Reply

2 things cream cheese and jalapeño jam (dip with cracker)

Reply

Peanut butter and chocolate were made for each other <3 Way to totally dominate your run!!

Reply

I may or may not have eaten an entire chocolate chip cookie at panera while working on blog stuff earlier…everyone knows panera cookies are basically giant. Also, I’m realizing I just may be a cookie addict…

Reply

Who did you run with? :) Sounds like you had fun! Can’t wait to see you get Brooke back! :D

Reply

Bacon and eggs! Apple pie and Vanilla Ice Cream! Coffee and Donuts! Whipped Cream and Chocolate Chips!

Pancakes…. are usually only eaten when I go to a diner because if I made them at home i’d eat the entire batch. #myfavoritefood #cantcontrolmyself #nomnomnom But I did make pumpkin pancakes once that were amazing…unfortunately i didn’t bookmark the recipe. :(

Didn’t run today but I’ll be running tomorrow. Gotta get in those last miles of 2013. I just bought a pair of Brooks Ghost 6s so i’m going to try them. My first pair of Brooks ever. I’ve been wearing Asics since I began running but lost the love lately.

Reply

Apples and peanut butter/almond butter
String cheese and almonds

Kodiak pancake/waffle mix is so good! Also has a little more protein and fiber than typical mixes so it has some staying power!

I did a Nike workout and then hit up a body pump class ;) no running today!

Reply

That is so stinkin cool that you ran with a pro, that is one sentence I will probably never be able to say haha.

I am not a real runner – only because I am not a big fan of pancakes… whopps!

Reply

9 miles for me today!

Reply

Peanut butter & chocolate! They go together like…well, peanut butter & chocolate :)

Reply

Sweet–way to own that run. And how awesome to run with a pro?!? I’m super impressed. I had a 3.8 mile run today. Was very nice and made me so happy but much slower than your miles. I think the following are wonderful combos: peanut butter + toast + banana, ranch dressing or sour cream + salsa, apples or carrots + any nut butter, ice cream + chocolate syrup + rice krispies. And, I never make pancakes cuz I don’t really like them … I know, it’s horrible, but I much more into savory breakfast foods. Enjoy your NYE. What ya got planned?!?

Reply

Wow awesome run! I need to go and get my nails done so bad but I think I am going to end up just doing it myself. Enjoy your new years eve!!

Fresh popcorn with chocolate chips poured on top belong together. I won’t eat popcorn by itself without the chocolate.

I did an easy 4 mile treadmill run today, splitting it to complete 3 miles before a Body Pump class and 1 mile afterwards.

Reply

Bisquick is the only pancake mix I will use, it makes the best pancakes and chicken fingers too.
Chocolate and peanut butter. Rice and Beans. Ice Cream and cookies. Cookies and Milk. Eggs and Bacon. Chips and queso….my list can go on and on and on!
Just ran 3.5miles on the treadmill while watching The Holiday. The run sucked but the movie was really good as always.

Your run looked amazing! I am insanely jealous of your pace :)

What an awesome run, you are amazing!!

We’ll done on that run!!! Wow,she is freakish fast!

Peanut Butter & Banana are a match made in heaven!

Gluten Free Bisquick….not to shabby if you have to!

5 miles on the dreadmill and 30 minutes of abs and weights at 5:30AM! Back to the work week grind unfortunately:(

Reply

I know how you feel with that fast 10-miler! I ran with my sister (who is a lot faster than me) last Saturday, and it was probably the fastest 10 miles of my life! Luckily, she was sick, and I was feeling great, so that evened the playing field a bit. :)

Keep up the amazing work. Very inspirational read. Emerson said “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Remember, the love is in the training, not crossing the finish line. FYI… I use the same Garmin watch for my triathlon training. So awesome!

Reply

I have that very same Garmin…just with different numbers on the screen ;-)

We use a gluten-free mix called Pamela’s, but as a kid it was always Bisquik.

Reply

Kodiak cakes are where it’s at for pancakes!

Reply

Chocolate and peanut butter ALWAYS. I prefer pancakes from scratch, but I usually use Kodiak!

Reply

way to kick butt in the run! :) okay, i’m late now that u’ve got a new post, but i was out earlier and read your previous post on my phone and wasn’t able to reply to it then, so i’ll cram it onto this one if that’s okay.
just wanted to say that you ARE strong as heck and that it’s totally natural that you’re thinking all of those thoughts and wondering what you want out of life, what you want to achieve, and what your game plans are going forward. you’re going thru lots of changes and so NEVER feel bad about reaching out to people and it’s often helpful (at least for me) to just write all that’s swirling around in your head down. the process helps and then you sort of feel like u can look at it and make a to-do list kind of approach. follow your heart, use those runs to clear your head and plan, and just take it one step at a time.
as for brookers, ugh, i’m sorry it’s gotta be insanely hard to be away from her…u are entitled to that ‘selfish’ feeling, but you’ve got the right overall attitude in putting her needs first. just blog and keep urself super busy until she gets back!! xoxo

Reply

I have been all over the board with pancake mixes including bisquick, hungry jack, and krusteaz. However, recently I decided to try kodiak cakes and that is what Im sticking with! I dig them.

Reply

I’m not really a pancake girl- I’m a waffle Girl!! When I do make them , I make them homemade and always add a little bit of vanilla and cinnamon to the mix. I think it’s the crispy texture that I like best abt waffles and those little crevices that hold syrup oh so well ;)

I really love turkey and avocado sandwiches-my very fave is marble rye bread, turkey, slice of red onion, tomato, and avocado…the bread MUST be toasted and also buttered bc that somehow makes it extra yumbo.

My run was 10 at an 8:45 pace. You are so very fast and someday, I hope to be the professional runner that YOU ARE (because you are So awesome!)

When will those pretty pure flows be launched? Oh MAN I cannot WAIT!

Reply

Hang in there while Brooke is gone!

Those are some seriously speedy miles!

I ran 6 miles yesterday. I did 3.5 outside with Bungee and then ran the rest on the treadmill because I currently hate running in the cold.

Thought I’d share this very embarrassing story that will hopefully give you a laugh this week… :)

A couple of days ago I went out for a little walk sans kiddos to relieve a little stress. While I was out, I saw my dad out walking and he was coming towards me. So I start waving at him. He isn’t waving back, and I just thought how funny that he doesn’t know it is me, so I start waving bigger and bigger with a big goofy smile on my face. (Keep in mind that my eye sight is horrible these days..) All the sudden “dad” turns down another street! By this time, I’m running towards him and kinda bugged that he isn’t recognizing me by now. So I’m full on chasing this guy and turn down the same street and then HE starts running. It was at that point that I realized, “Hmmmm, my dad never runs….that must not be him.” Ya, wasn’t Dad. The second I realized that, I turned around and ran to my parents house (they live really close) just to tell the story and make sure Dad was home after all. Oh man, it is not a run until you have been chased by a crazy 30 year old redhead! hahaha!

Another sidenote….I’m just about to send in my application for the dental hygiene program at UVU! I’m sooo hoping to get in! I might be in your neck of the woods this fall! :)

Hope your week is filled with happy distractions and it goes by quickly! :)

Reply

Happy New Year pretty girl :) I know 2013 was hard but I’m sure this week is tough too, but you are you so strong and such an amazing inspiration to me and so many others! I am so happy that I found your blog almost 2 years ago and have been able to follow your incredible journey. I know this sounds creepy, but sometimes it seems like I know you and I am sure you are more incredible in real life! Keep smiling and I just know that 2014 will be a fantastic year for you!! :)

Reply

You are a speed demon! Awesome job on the run! This is going to sound like a weird combo..but I think peanut butter and strawberries belong together… or plain spinach and mushroom combo. My monday was was 3 miles (with negative splits!) and today’s run was 3 miles in the snow and it hurt.

Reply

Must always make pancakes from scratch. It’s a moral imperative. Recipie as follows:

3 tbs butter (melted)
1 c buttermilk (this stuff takes forever to actually spoil so don’t worry about having it around)
1 egg beaten
3/4 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

Procedure: Melt butter. Whisk in buttermilk, then egg. Thoroughly combine. Stir in baking soda and salt and then gently stir in flour until just combined. It will be lumpy. Cook as you cook pancakes and be very very happy.

Foods to be eaten together- cheese and pretzels. Particularly the big block of Cabot Sharp Cheddar from Costco. Mac and Cheese and peas.

Run- rough recovery run. Only three really easy miles. But back at it today with 12 x 400s!
