10 glorious miles and don’t tell Brooke…

10 glorious miles with Bangs Friend.  I love running with her because we have very serious conversation and also very strange/funny talks while running and we don’t really even pay attention to the running part of what we are doing.  I like not taking running so seriously every now and then.

The trail I ran on every day for a year:

IMG 4644

After our run I went to the gym for some planks and 20 minutes of strength training (aka I don’t know what to do with myself when Brookers is gone so I fill my time with planks).

IMG 4645

And then it was over to my Aunt and Uncle’s house to Skype with Mer (the coolest grandma on the planet).

IMG 4647

After the Skype date I went to the movies with my cousins.  Going to the movies is one of my favorite things.  Popcorn, no cell phones, relaxation and becoming very invested in the story you are watching… makes for a good time.

Don’t tell Brooke but I hung out with one of her best friends yesterday without her.

I am quite sure that you know exactly what a plate of Thanksgiving food looks like (although, I do have to say that my mom’s stuffing was once again out of this world) so let’s talk about dessert instead.

My cousin’s birthday (the last time I saw him was when I was in NYC to run the marathon a few years ago) was yesterday so we had birthday cake and pie to celebrate.  That is something to be very thankful about.

My sampler plate.  My dad is allergic to eggs and so he has never had pumpkin pie before.  My aunt bought a vegan pumpkin pie so that he could eat it! It was his first taste of pumpkin pie and he loved it!

And we finished things off with a very serious ping pong tournament that went well into the night.

A great time with family and Bangs Friend made Thanksgiving 2013 as good as it could have been given the circumstances!

I hope you had an amazing day!

Looks like you had a great Thanksgiving!

Also, there are a ton of super easy (and delicious!) vegan pumpkin pie recipes! I’m vegan, and always make all the desserts. No one can tell the difference, and then I get to eat pie ;) which was the best thing I ate yesterday haha

Hope you have a good day Janae!

Aww looks like you had a great day despite missing a certain little girl. Think of how exciting your reunion will be though :)

Pa which movie did you see??

Reply

Sounds like a very nice day :). I also enjoyed dessert…two plates!

I ran a 5k Turkey Trot and placed first in the 30-39 age group. :)

I’m glad you got to spend time with great people, even though you missed the greatest one of all. I hope you don’t explode from cold when you get back to Utah after running in CA.

I did not run a race but I ran with my husband and baby girl in the morning. I wanted to run 5 miles, but he was pushing the stroller so we only did 3. Oh well, it still was great to be out on a run.

The best thing I ate yesterday was green bean casserole. Yum yum!

Looks like you had a great Thanksgiving, Janae! So glad you were able to be with Bangs Friend again and your wonderful family. We had a great day too! We did a Turkey Trot 5k in the morning which was super fun, but I think my hands were going to freeze off – holy cow, it was COLD! Hunter did great…just chilled in the stroller and laughed at the people and dogs as we ran by. It was pretty cute. Then we went over to our friend’s house for our meal. My favorite thing was stuffing + mashed potatoes + turkey + gravy all in ONE bite! Oh, and the sweet potato casserole was another hit!

I ended up doing 12 miles yesterday which is the longest I’ve gone in about nine months :-) I know this is super weird but the best thing I ate yesterday were the roasted garlic Brussels sprouts. They were incredible. Homemade toffee and bread pudding were pretty amazing too!

Reply

Luckily I’m not allergic to anything!

The best thing I ate yesterday was italian stuffing! We were all fighting over the last few pieces.

I did a Turkey Trot 5k with my boyfriend, his sister and mom! We were freezing but had a great time! Going home to a warm house full of food was really motivating too!

Glad your day went relatively well yesterday!
I’m not allergic to anything that I know of thankfully.
My cornbread sausage stuffing rocks! (Recipe handed from my mother via her mother)
I did my first 10k yesterday with friends in below freezing temps and had a blast!!
Hope you have a good day today!

Reply

Very thankful I have no allergies :-) Thanksgiving was good! Although my family is a little crazy ;-) The best thing I ate was some pumpkin cupcake with a cream cheese topping! I didn’t get a chance to race yesterday so I did my own 5k on the tread before we left! Glad you had a good Thanksgiving!

Prayers are with you girl! I haven’t gone thru that yet but will over Christmas so I can imagine how hard it is for u.
Running/weight training is a great idea to keep busy!!

I’m allergic to all alcohol. I swell up and my face itches and the next day my skin turns into a mess of white itchy bumps. Not fun.

Your cousin is cute! I think he needs to move to Alaska…haha

Reply

Sounds like a great Thanksgiving!

Happy to hear that you were still able to have a lovely Thanksgiving! And it’s great that your dad was able to have pumpkin pie…everyone needs to have it at least once!

Reply

How can he have never had pumpkin pie?!?! Wow! Luckily I’m not allergic to anything. My grandpa’s homemade pie is the best thing I ate yesterday. It’s made with a pumpkin from his garden! I ran a turkey trot yesterday. I miss seeing Bangs on the blog!

Reply

Best thing I ate yesterday was stuffing with gravy! I look forward to it all year. No race for me but I ran 6 miles and then walked the dog 2 miles.

Reply

Glad you had a great day!

Luckily, I am not allergic to anything. So glad your dad got to experience pumpkin pie:)

I didn’t run yesterday…there is no race nearby for me to do.

I did brave Walmart last night, so that was fun!!!

Reply

Looks like fun! Christian and I ran an 10k yesterday and while I thought it felt like we had just ran 2 miles, poor guy (hasn’t ran in 5 months) was about to keel over and die 1.5 miles in. Gotta love him, though ;)

Reply

I ran 9.21 miles yesterday (total random amount, I know)…Best thing I ate yesterday? Hmm. I hate to say brussel sprouts but they were delish as was the stuffing and sweet potatoes…and apple crisp that I made if I do say so myself!…I have slight food allergies to walnuts, the occasional almond and actually raw apples, pears, celery, carrots and a bunch more…it’s called oral allergy syndrome. Not fun but I deal with it.

Reply

Best thing I ate yesterday was popovers with strawberry butter. A thanksgiving must!

And my run was a trail run…only about 4 miles…but it was freezing and the ground was frosted over. Loved it.

Hope your time away from Brooke passes quickly.

Reply

Yay for time with Bangs friend! I love when she makes appearances on the blog.

My mom got an awesome french silk pie for us yesterday and it was bomb. But I really enjoyed all of dinner over all! No complaints here!

Reply

Planks … as in multiple planks within one gym session? You are amazing! I am in awe!

Favorite thing to eat: chocolate pudding pie with a side of peanut butter frozen yogurt. Mmmmmmmmmm :)

Reply

Aww! It’s so nice she made your dad a vegan pumpkin pie. Did you think it tasted as good as the original???

Reply

Looks like a fun trip (despite brooke being gone). I’m glad you’re filling your time in with fun stuff!

Reply

That trail looks stunning. Glad your day was filled with such loving support! These days will get easier.

Reply

I absolutely love that view. So peaceful! Great scenery and great friend = the best run ever. I ran a 5K turkey trot (I wish it was a 10K). Best thing I ate were the pumpkin pie biscotti’s I baked. I wish I could stop eating them!

Reply

Don’t forget about the power of retail therapy.
Each day is one day closer.

Reply

I ran a 5K and then ate about 4 slices of cornbread with butter at dinner later. So good!

Reply

Best thing I ate yesterday , Carrot Cake (random I know)

Reply

My Thanksgiving run was some speed word on the treadmill.

Your dessert plate looks like mine did! I love to take a little bit of everything!

I’m allergic to mean people :) I have several food intolerances that mess me up pretty badly but only started showing their annoying faces regularly since I’ve been over 40. That means I know what ALL the things taste like. Which is a bummer. “A taste of honey’s worse than none at all.” Gluten, casein, eggs, potato, fish… I’m sure they’d find something else if I let them do more tests, but that’s enough to deal with for now. So awesome your dad got to try pumpkin pie…it’s so yummy! No run for me :( I was so hoping to do my benchmark 5k turkey trot for the 4th year in a row. After winning it last year, I was riding such an ego high

Reply

Pumpkin pie is my favorite, that’s awesome that your dad finally got to have some!

I went on a nice 8 mile run yesterday (it was only supposed to be 7 but I got a little lost and added a mile haha), it definitely didn’t hurt when it came time to eat all that food though!

Reply

Glad you all had such a great Thanksgiving! That trail looks BEAUTIFUL!! Enjoy the rest of your time in CA!

Cantaloupe. It makes me so itchy. Why am I allergic to something that smells and tastes so wonderful?

Oh the homemade rolls were so delicious! And the pie my version of bangs friend made for me! My husband smoked a turkey and we cooked one in the oven too. They were both so good. This was probably the best food ive ever had at a thanksgiving meal. Yay!

I only did a short 2.5 mile run yestersay then some kickbox and p90x yoga!

Im so happy you had a good time last night. Do you pick up brooke today?

Reply

Looks like you had a great Turkey Day!! I’m not allergic to anything thankfully. The best thing I ate yesterday was my mom’s sweet potato pie with apples, walnuts and topped with marshmellows, YUM!

I’m doing the RW Running Streak so that is what I did yesterday instead of a turkey trot.

Reply

I’m glad you had a nice holiday surrounded by people you love!

I’m allergic to latex, Neosporin and a couple of medications.

Best thing I ate yesterday was my uncle’s pecan pie and his french silk pie. I had to have both!

Reply

My girls and I finally went to see Catching Fire last night! So good! We, of course, had to have popcorn, candy and soda.

Reply

I’m allergic to fish sticks haha! I hope you have a good time visiting with family. I’m glad your parents went with you!

Your Mer sounds like such an awesome g-ma :)

Reply

That is awesome you got to run with Bangs! Great friends = blessings from God.
I am only allergic to sulfa drugs. No food allergies, thank goodness. Best thing I ate was the amazing turkey my husband cooked and I started my day with a 5.2 mile sunrise run–giving thanks for all my blessings.

Have a wonderful day!

Reply

Glad you had a good day Janae! You’ll be back with Brooke before you know it! :)

Reply

The best thing I ate yesterday was stuffing and mashed potatoes. I ran a 5 miler local Turkey trot…it was COLD. So glad you had a nice day!!!

Reply

Sounds like a great day given the circumstances! Glad you could enjoy yourself!

I’m only allergic to bee stings as far as I know, so I’m pretty lucky!

Best thing I ate yesterday was my aunt’s apple pie, which is always the best thing. It was one of 4 different pies I sampled yesterday! A new favorite was a pumpkin praline pie that my best friend’s sister brought down to her house.

I ran a 5K Turkey Trot yesterday and got my second fastest 5K time ever and PR’d that same course (from my time in May) by almost 2 minutes! Pretty proud of myself for that, given my injured IT band and the fact I hadn’t run in about 3 weeks!

Reply

It looks like you are having fun….so jealous that you are running in tshirts!!!

Reply

I ran the Clearwater Turkey Trot yesterday. Thank goodness because I had way too much turkey and pie! Best thing I ate was the turkey (brined ahead of time and then basted with local honey in the last few minutes…OMG, I want more now). Then the kids wanted to bake cookies today (yeah, it was all their idea. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) so now I have ginger cookies and chocolate chip cookies to tempt me. Long run tomorrow for sure!

Happy Thanksgiving! I’m sure it was a tough holiday for you, but you are super strong, Janae!

Reply

We had a ping pong tournament as well! So fun.

Reply

Yay ping pong!!! So fun :) Super sweet of your aunt to buy a vegan pumpkin pie so your dad could try it! I rode my bike yesterday, while watching the national dog show :) The best thing I ate yesterday was my mother in law’s apple crumble pie. YUM.

Best foods of Thanksgiving – pumpkin pie and chestnut stuffing. The turkey’s good too! :)

Yesterday, my Dad and I did a group run with the running group in the morning as is tradition with beer and donuts after. Did I mention that is the best tradition ever? I, of course, ended up racing and beating my dad….it’s not like there’s any competition in the family!

PS – I’m trying to get rid of a 50% discount to the Vibram website.

Reply

I ran the Cottonwood Heights 5k yesterday dressed as a pilgrim. I had complete strangers asking for pictures with them and their kids. I also beat the mayor to the finish line so I received a ribbon stating that I beat him. It sounds odd as I type it, but it was so much fun!

Reply

So happy you had a good thanksgiving given the circumstances. Best food – my aunt’s stuffing & my cousin’s Hershey bar cake. No run for me yesterday but I made up for it today. I’m allergic to nuts so desserts are tough since people like to put them in almost all desserts!

Happy thanksgiving!

Here, have a hug! Tough times but you’re handling it like a trooper!

Where is that awesome trail in San Jose?? I commute up there for work a few times a week and am always looking for a nice running trail. The hotel gym is usually my go to when I’m up there.

Best food yesterday – homemade almond butter. I am allergic to a bunch of foods (dairy, soy, eggs), so Thanksgiving dinner items are all pretty much off limits. Almond butter for dessert is the best. You can also mix it with almond milk or coconut milk and freeze it for a nice frozen treat.

No running yesterday (been nursing an achilles injury) but I have been pool running in the meantime. Thanks for all your great tips and inspiration on coming back strong from an injury. I think it really makes you appreciate running even more.

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy that sunshine!

Reply

That is awesome you got to run with Bangs friend!! :)

You are strong, girl, keep on being awesome!

So glad you were still able to have a lovely Thanksgiving despite the extenuating circumstances. Sending good thoughts your way.

I’m allergic to Benadryl — gotta love the irony, huh? ;)

It is the Los Gatos trail! It is my favorite!

Thanks!! I’ll definitely check it out! Any other local recommendations?

Best thing yesterday was my nephew’s girlfriend’s dessert. It was a sugar cookie with cool whip and strawberry glaze with strawberries and blackberries. Yum!
Thanksgiving run was the “phantom pie run” with our local track club. It was not timed and really just for fun and it was pretty cool.

Reply

We had a great Thanksgiving!! The best thing that I ate was the apple pie that I made using my Uncle’s recipe – it was delicious! I ran a turkey trot and considering the fact that I am getting over some serious anemia and ran 19:12 I was happy with it! It was fun to be there with my aunt and cousin! I don’t get to see them very often on holidays.

Reply

just think..you made it through with class, and it is over

Best thing I ate yesterday was apple pie with vanilla ice cream…yum!!!
I ran a Turkey Trot an PR’d…woo hoo!

I know I don’t know you in real life, but just from this blog, you are a true inspiration to me. You seem so happy and positive during a time where most people would be down and out. I absolutely love reading about your life everyday and Brooke always brings a smile to my face. You’re a constant reminder for us to always appreciate the good things we are blessed with instead of focusing on what we have lost. Happy holidays!

I ran a 5 mile turkey trot on Thursday morning, and loved it, despite having to watch out for ice and some killer cold wind.

I made dinner for myself and it was perfect. I loved being able to eat whenever I wanted :)
