Brittany is 18 weeks along and still running like a champ! She finds out in two weeks if she is having a girl or a boy and I am slightly tempted to fly up to Alaska so I can go to find out with her. I think it is a girl.
We had a great 8 mile run up the canyon with Rachelle. For the first time I wore capris because I didn’t want to freeze but luckily it wasn’t that cold.
I don’t know what we are doing.
The best thing in the world to come home to. Somebody woke up earlier than usual…
Afterwards we had a park date with Brooke and girlfriend could live on the swings.
We were quite dehydrated after so much hard work (running and the park…I know, too much) so I took her to my second home The Slurp.
And my third home, Cafe Rio. Cafe Rio really is a good deal because I can get my chicken salad/tostada thingee plus Brooke’s quesadilla and strawberries all for just $6.03. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Now we are headed up to Salt Lake City to go to Trader Joe’s (she brought an empty suitcase so that she could bring the good stuff back with her to Alaska), some shopping and to walk around the city. And lots of hot chocolate.
PS this is Brittany’s view everyday when she is out running in Alaska. Maybe we should all take a cruise up there to visit and run with her.

I’m up for a cruise. Especially since most Alaska cruises leave from here in WA.
I am visiting Utah in April and I cannot wait to get some Cafe Rio in me! I think I may eat it for every single meal. I love that place so much.
Kay @ goaloflosing.com
I’ve been on a cruise every year since being married. We are addicted! I highly recommend Carnival Cruise lines. So much fun! :)
Robyn
Fabulous running view!!! But not sure if I could do the cold all the time- if I could afford it I would love to do a half marathon there. Ps/ love brittnay’s top!
Sharisse
I really want to do a cruise in AK! I hear it’s beautiful… Furthers I ran… well, it’s more of a scurry from one twin to the other twin when they’re both crying! Hope to get back into the running groove when I find my own groove taking care of them :)
Nicole
Wow – that Alaskan view is beautiful! How often does she run outside during the winter months?
Kari @ Running Ricig
My aunt and uncle live in Alaska, but I’ve never been.
I’m still trying to motivate myself to run today. Bungee is going crazy with excess energy, so I think we’ll go pretty soon.
I had a fried egg sandwich for lunch. It was amazing.
Madeline Vance
my family and I went on a cruise to Alaska! It was BEAUTIFUL!
Sarah @pickyrunner
It blows my mind that it’s already snowing where you are and it’s 80 degrees over here on the east coast. I just don’t get it. I don’t love winter weather but if it means drinking hot chocolate all day long, I could get on board with that. Oh wait, I do that already. The prettiest place I’ve ever run is Rhode Island where I live. It’s absolutely gorgeous there with the waterfront views.
Kara @ Kara in the Kitchen
I would love to do an Alaskan cruise! I’ve been on cruises to Mexico & the Caribbean.
Prettiest places I’ve run are West Cliff Dr. in Santa Cruz & Lands End in SF.
Elizabeth @ My Neon Running Shoes
We’ve been on two cruises! One just Joe and I and one for my father in law’s 60th birthday last Christmas. Both were to the Caribbean. Today for lunch I tried Indian food and had an apple fritter for dessert :-) I thought of you! Have a great afternoon!
Pam
Killer views! I can’t believe she’s that far along! WOW. I have a bigger belly just by eating Chipotle. Fingers crossed for her!
Amber
I lived in Alaska until recently and I highly recommend that everyone visit! It’s an awesome place!! If you’re not a fan of the cold weather plan your trip for the summer though :)
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve never been to Alaska, but it’s definitely on my bucket list. Actually, I’d probably take an Alaskan cruise over one to the Caribbean — I’m just one of those strange people that prefers mountains and forests to beaches and oceans.
Liz @ The Girl on Fire Now
My parents went on an Alaskan cruise, I believe right before they got pregnant with my twin and I. I have never been there – unfortunately :(
Brooke looking out the window is ADORABLE!
Chels
Never been to Alaska but it looks beautiful. Cross training day for me today…taught my spin class. I will run tomorrow! Had eggs for lunch. :-) I miss Trader Joe’s.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
Sounds like you gals have a fun day planned! A run, Cafe Rio, and Trader Joe’s – can’t go wrong with that combo! ;)
Cori @ olivetorun
Prettiest place I’ve ever ran is in the mountains of North Carolina…. primarily because I just love mountains. It’s my happy place. :)
Kathy
Ooh! Thanks for the view! I’m running in the Mayor’s Marathon next year in Anchorage. I’ve never been before, but I’m pretty psyched to see it.
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More
I’ve never been to Alaska or on a cruise. I think I would rather go on a cruise than go to Alaska.
The prettiest place I have ever ran is Southern Oregon. It’s beautiful there!
Jessica R @ fromthekitchentotheroad
I went on a caribbean cruise in February. I loved every single second of it! I am definitely in for a cruise to Alaska. Where do I sign up?
Rebecca
What is this Cafe Rio you speak of and WHY is there NOT one in MAINE???
Lucky for me I’m traveling to SLC in November for work…I will hunt one down!
Heather @fitncookies
Does she laugh at the temps in Utah as if they are warm compared to Alaska? I would think it would be freezing there all the time! What made her move there? I love that you guys were able to spend so much time together. It really shows how much you value your friendships!!
Julia
I’ve been to Alaska, just this past July, and it is STUNNING. We rented a car which is way to go and flew to anchorage, then went to Denali, Talkeetna, Fairbanks, Girdwood, and Seward. Where is your friend from? You better get up and see her, but maybe not when it’s 40 below ;)
Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs
Brooke is the most stylish little lady — the topknot! the tights! the boots! Too cute :)
Miranda @ Lovely Wife Lovely Life
I’ve never ever been on a cruise! That being said, if cruises to Alaska have that kind of a view, sign me up!! I want to go on a tropical cruise somewhere… I think I just want warmth in general though ;)
Jodi
My brothers and sister used to live in Alaska (my mom’s first husband moved up there after their divorce), so I have been up there several times. The summers are great and it is absolutely beautiful. The winter I was there for Christmas, it was -25 for pretty much the whole 2 weeks. They lived in Anchorage and Wasilla. I’ve been fishing in various rivers there and went running once at 11pm cuz hey, it was still daylight out. ;)
I ran a 15k yesterday and my legs are screaming at me today, so I walked and did yoga. Prettiest place I have ever run…it’s got to be Switzerland. I mean, really. How could it not be? ;)
alicia
I love Alaska …was there for a wedding and I did a 10k there too

I would loooove to go to Alaska someday!! It’s definitely on my bucket list!!
She is an absolutely adorable pregnant person!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats
I’ve never been to Alaska so I’m game for a trip! I went on a cruise once in college from Miami to the Bahamas. Just 3 nights but it was a blast!
Katie
Oooh I want to go to Alaska! So awesome that she’s running that many miles and pregnant! She looks fantastic!! :) I love her tank top too. The prettiest place I’ve ran was Santa Barbara, on the beach. Beach running is my happy place.
xo
april
i have never been to alaska, but i would love to visit someday :) it looks gorgeous!
the prettiest place i’ve ever ran was along a path in maui. can’t beat the beautiful pacific ocean view!
have fun stocking up at TJ’s! my friend informed me that they now have cookie butter with cocoa in it! crazy, right?! i thought you might enjoy it ;)
Josephine
I live in Alaska and it is all about perspective!
It is not cold here all the time like a majority of the people in the comments said. Now if you are used to hot and humid weather all the time then yes Alaska will feel cold to you.
In Southcentral Alaska where I live (Anchorage area) the winter tempatures average above 0 and I think are comparable to other real winters in the lower 48 (what we can the contintental US). Right now our weather is in the 40s and we do not have snow on the ground yet.
In any case Alaska is beautiful and any part of the state is a must see! It is unlike anything else.
And that Brooke of yours is adorable. Love that window picture.
Ashley
A suitcase for Trader Joe’s goods. I like this girl.
Megan
I have never been to alaska! I have been on a caribbean cruise. I am actually saving some dollars for my parents 30th anniversary to pitch in to their 3 week alaskan cruise! They have no idea and will be thrilled!
I ran 2 miles today…
Lunch was the best salad ever.
Prettiest… I love running in DC and on the lake my parents live on!
Jade
Alaska looks beyond gorgeous. I really want to go. I live hours from trader joe’s…it makes me sad!
Alyssa @ See This Girl Run
That tostada is the best deal!! Mini, cheaper salad!
Aimee - funfitgirl
lunch was leftover wild blend rice and chicken – sounds kinda boring but it was actually delicious.
Prettiest place I’ve ever run was probably a fall day down an old country back road in the Catskills (New York). I had an apartment my senior year of college right on the edge of the Catskills, it made for some AMAZING runs. If you’ve never seen a fall in NY, you need to asap. It will change your life.
Teresa@The Chronicles of a {Not So} Supermom
I have never been on a cruise. It’s so sad….
I had one of my weird mixes for lunch-ground turkey, mushroom, black beans, and brown rice! Sounds weird but oh my goodness, it is SO good!
jrm
When I first read your post title, I read it as “When I was 18 and pregnant.”
Dope, reading comprehension.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona
For lunch I had leftover pasta from last night.
That salad looks pretty good.

I’m trying to convince my fiancé to go on an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon! I will show him this picture as exhibit A :)
Leah @ Running with the Hayneses
Prettiest place I’ve ever run? I run in a lot of different places and so many of them have been so pretty for all different reasons! Probably one of my all time favorites is a trail on the coast of Maine near where my in-laws live.
Leigha @ Minougirl
I’ve never been to Alaska but my cousin lives there so I really should take advantage of it! I did 5 miles today – 3 were tempo. Big race on Thursday! Lunch was a typical school lunch – turkey sandwich and an apple. I run in a beautiful place everyday. A boardwalk on Lake Michigan. Less than a mile from my house!
Zaneta
Alaska is gorgeous!! If I could just pick up and move I would totally move there!! btw, Brooke is getting so big!! Hope you are doing well, Janae!! I’m sending a big bear hug your way! :)
Carissa
I took a Princess Cruise to Alaska and a train tour through the Interior of Alaska during the summer of 2011. I had so much fun and would go back in a heart beat.
My favorite place to run is the Heritage Trail in Iowa. It’s not the most beautiful place, but it’s peaceful and relaxing.
Amy
Brooks running gear is on sale today at Zulily. I’m going to try out a pair of running shorts for the first time.
I love the view of Alaska. So beautiful! My husband and I went on a cruise to Alaska in June of 2009. It was by far my favorite cruise I have ever been on. We were even lucky to have a warm trip (warmer than when my husband went on the same cruise 15 years previously) and no rain! I didn’t even need to wear my sweatshirt.
Oh that view of Brooke in the window! I do love that when my kids greet me at the door.
Lunch was turkey, pepper jack, arugula, tomato and Italian dressing on sourdough sandwich followed by a fiber one brownie (they are actually good when you are trying to be good)
I wish I had a café rio salad. They took the only Café Rio that was within a reasonable driving distance from me out. Sad day.
Amy
oh and I can’t believe your friend is 18 weeks pregnant! Is this her first baby?
(she looks amazing!)
Brittany - Travel.run.live.love
All of you need to come visit me in Alaska! Seriously! Anchorage is where I call home, but if you do come to Alaska you should also visit Denali, Seward, Homer, Ketchikan and Juneau! Come to think of it, just come see it all (in the summer… the winter is far too cold and dark!) and you will fall in love. I’d be happy to be your tour guide. :) And for all you runners, there are a couple of great races in Anchorage in the summer months- Mayor’s Marathon/Half and Skinny Raven Marathon/Half! Come and check them out!
Tracy
I live up in Anchorage, Alaska and get to see some of those beautiful views on my runs too!! I’ve done the Humpy’s full once, Humpy’s half once, and the Mayor’s half a few times… I agree with Brittany, the winter is far too cold and dark.. I, like Brittany, stock up on Trader Joe’s when I go visit my family in the lower 48 too…
Wendy @ New Moms Talk
You’re kidding when you ask us to pick the solo prettiest place we’ve ever run, right? :-)
My short list, because I refuse to choose just one includes: Torres del Paine NP, Tierra del Fuego, upstate New York, southwestern Pennsylvania, the PNW, where I live now (less than a mile from the ocean in Washington), Leesylvania SP (where I married my awesome man on a pier at sunset).
Thanks for the memory lane with each of those places.
Kate
I LIVE in Alaska! And I know Brittany! (kinda) I’m a medical rep and used to call on the clinic she worked and I used to sit behind her and her parents at Mass! I feel like a know a celebrity! I should be a sales rep for the state of Alaska because I love it so much and am always trying to convince people to visit or move here! We have mountains and trails, oceans and rivers, snow and sun- we have everything anyone who loves to get outside would want! I feel so lucky everyday! I’m on my way out the door for an easy 4 mile run on the Chester Creek trail. High probability of a moose encounter!
Emly at Running for Boston
Prettiest place that I have ever run: hmm that’s a toughie, I think I’d have to say Alberta Canada. It was in a national park and it was gorgeous. But seriously, I can’t easily pick out one (sad?). Although ask me in 13 months and I will definitely have an answer – I’m going to sign up to do the 2014 Rim Rock Marathon with my cousin through the Colorado National Park. I’m so excited. The pictures are insane.
Nikki @ grab your kicks
Lunch today (and everyday) was a big spinach salad with hard boiled egg, carrots, and broccoli slaw!
Kathee
Went to Alaska when my daughter was 4 months old. It was amazing and we even took her Halibut Fishing. They are so easy at that age.
I ran up East Canyon today. I love trail running but I needed to get some good hill work in so I went up the Canyon towards Emigration. Only 7 miles but good for me!
Kim
My husband has been to Alaska several times but I have zero desire to go.
I ran 10.5 miles – my last run before my 50 mile race Saturday.
Becks
I’m from Alaska! Everyone should go! Although I don’t think a cruise is the best way to see the state. I currently live in Utah but go home to visit as much as possible. The prettiest place I’ve ever run was in Nepal. Slightly lacking in oxygen, however, I didn’t get very far…
Linda @running4two
Love running while pregnant! And I love her shirt ;-).
I finished my first Ragnar Relay on Saturday (I ran 23 miles total), so I have taken 2 rest days. Running resumes tomorrow!
Prettiest place I have ever run…along the ocean!
Jen @ The Existential Broccoli
My best friend lives in Anchorage. I went up to visit her in January, and I think that was the actually the prettiest place I’ve run. She lives in the Hillside neighborhood overlooking the city, and you can see everything from up there. The best part was rolling out of bed at 8:30 and still being able to run at sunrise!

Wowzers I would love to go to Alaska. I have been on a cruise, but only to the Caribbean. Alaska is definitely on my Top 5 places to visit list.

Set my marathon PR at the Mayor’s Marathon in anchorage in 2006! It was gorgeous and the weather was perfect (of course, it was June).
Nikki @ will run for pizza
I visited Alaska a couple times when my cousin lived there! Beautiful but too cold for my blood!!! It was -20 and we were rinding rides at the fair!

I think running along Highway 1 (Pacific Highway) for the Big Sur Marathon was one of the prettiest places I’ve run!
Debbie @ Deb Runs
Your friend’s Alaskan view is beautiful! I’d have to say that running in Maui was the most beautiful place that I’ve ever run. Running in the Big Sur Marathon was a close second!
Anissa Angelosante
I only ran 4.5 miles today. I had a long 1 hour progression run yesterday. So it was just an easy day!! :)
Lunch was a salad and a pear.
Prettiest place I have ran… I dont know if I could just pick one. I loved running in Minneapolis and Winter Park, CO. Oh and there was this one place in Idaho which was very pretty too. Just too many places to pick just one!
Denise
I have been on 15+ cruises – they are my favorite hobby!! I haven’t done an Alaska one yet but it’s on my list!!
Hali
I have never been to Alaska, but WHAT A VIEW! I am still on my running break… so yah ;-) I went on a Cruise for my high school graduation with my BFF and it was amazing. Lunch today was leftover homemade veggie pizza to die for. I think I have yet to run in a super pretty place… haha I need to work on this!
chelsea @ the new wifestyle
alaska was waaaaaay more fun and beautiful than i could have ever expected when i went back in march!! we ventured to anchorage and it was a fun city with views you could never get sick of! go. right now.
i am currently in new england and hoping to get in a run in tomorrow or the next day so i’m thinking cape cod and newport, RI will be pretty spectacular to run through!
Jaclyn @ Grateful Mountain Mumma
Can we go on a cruise? That would be SO fun! I could bring Ben and he could meet Brookers and you could run with me when you are doing your super EZ recovery days. Yippee!!!
I love seeing photos of healthy, pregnant runners and in fact, I was just looking through your HRG “Oldies” from when you were preggers with miss B and loving it. You rocked it!
How are you doing? Any chance you can update all of us who love and care about you as your internet BFFs without saying anything too personal?
XOXXO
Nicole
I went on a cruise to Alaska last year and it was gorgeous…I would love to go back and be able to run there!
Brittany
How do you get that lunch for six dollars?! Do you order the salad with the tortilla separate?! Now I want cafe rio tomorrow, we just got one in phoenix last year :)
Brooke’s top bun is soooo cute!
Jessica M
I love Alaska! I lived there for 2.5 years after college and got to travel all over the state for work (Kenai Penninsula, Anchorage, Prudhoe Bay, Glenallen, and Fairbanks). I’ve since moved to Texas, and I miss the Alaskan spring, summer and fall like crazy! OK ok, I even miss the winter…a teensy bit.
Today has just started, but I always run 1 mile with my dog in the morning, so that’s done. I’m running 5-6 tonight
The prettiest place I have run would have to be Alaska. You almost can’t go wrong there.
Heidi @ artistandathlete
Thank you for linking to Brittany’s blog!
I have had Alaska on my mind because I want to go fishing near Bristol Bay, but it’s seemingly impossible for me to travel anywhere without finding a race to run. I’m going to follow this girl! :)
Sarah G.
Wow, those Alaska views are breathtaking! I have never been, and could probably never convince my husband to go (anything without 90+ degree weather is not a vacation is his book, haha) but in a perfect world I would LOVE to see all that beauty in person.
The prettiest place I have ever run is along the beach in Avalon, NJ.
Today’s lunch is a big salad with lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, and I chopped up leftover homemade spicy sriracha turkey burgers and put it on top, with Ken’s ranch dressing… yum, is it 12 yet?!
Niki
No Alaska…yet.
I love SLC! Hope you had fun!!

I have an addiction to running in Moab (when it’s not summer time!) so I would have to say that’s the prettiest place I have run. I would LOVE to get to some of the places people are talking about though! That’s one of the best parts about running – where it can take you!
Samantha
Hello!
Just started reading your blog not too long ago, and was amazed at all of the running you did during your pregnancy! And then I saw this article, another positive one about someone 18 wks pregnant and running strong! I am 12 weeks and have been horribly sick the last 4 weeks, and for the first time ever have not been able to workout. I miss running like crazy. Did neither of you experience sickness in your first trimester, or know others who were sidelined from it? It’d be nice to know I’m not the only one in this boat! Hoping to get back at it in 2nd tri if I am feeling better!!!
Thanks, and I look forward to keep reading!
Michelle (The Runner's Plate)
I live in Alaska!! It is pretty, that you can’t deny.
Lindsey
Born and raised in AK! Whenever I go on vaca I hit up Trader Joes for cookie butter and quinoa and black bean chips! haha
