Mentally ready. Physically not. And Brooke’s tantrum.

Say hello to Mrs. 3:01 marathoner.  She text me last night seeing if I wanted to go on a run in a few hours (my way of saying that we went way too early even though I secretly love finishing my run when it is still dark outside).

She has the best stories ever and she keeps me very entertained.

PS her quads.  Amazing.

IMG 2853

I was excited to try out my new vest for the run and I loved it.  The last time I wore a vest was my sweater vest in 7th grade… I think I may still have it actually.

This thing kept my core crazy warm and I love the kangaroo pocket in the front.  It is a new running staple.   I don’t know why my hair was so huge this morning.  It was early.

IMG 2863

Today was one of those days that I mentally wanted to go fast but my body was not having it.  I think three races in one weekend and then a bunch of travel may have something to do with it.  I will be resting up like crazy until my race on Saturday.   Luckily, my friend Josse was more than okay keeping it slow with me.

I came home and did some sit ups and planks, I am needing to get back on track with doing daily core work.

One of my favorite parts of the day is getting back in my pajamas after a run and shower.  I may be in them for an hour or half the day but either way I just really like pajamas.

Brooke has taken over my water bottle.

IMG 2870

Even though Brooke is smiling and happy most of the day she does have her moments were she dramatically throws herself onto the ground and has a little tantrum.  My mom and I can’t help but laugh.

After I poured my bowl of cereal this morning I noticed that the last bowl from this bag is going to be quite exciting… sugar crash here I come.

IMG 2873

Off with Paige to get lunch at our favorite salad bar and then find the perfect Halloween costume for Saturday’s race… I need to find something awesome but also something that I can still attempt to run fast in.    Anyone have a spider-woman costume I can borrow?

I can’t help but laugh when a kid throws a tantrum. It is normally over something silly. I ran in my tights for the first time this morning. It was ccccold. And I am a baby about it right now. I love wearing vests to run. I discovered them last winter running. They keep your core warm but your arms are free to help keep you from overheating. I like it.

Reply

I’m gonna go with Reese’s puffs or cinnamon toast crunch :-) can’t wait to see your costume!!!

This is the first I saw about Ryan Hall – thank you for sharing. I’m sure you saw the article in RW this month about him too, finally being injury-free and ready to kill it in NYC. Sad.

Reply

Cinnamon toast crunch is the best!!! So sad about Ryan Hall. Love that quote about being a runner no matter how fast or slow you are!

Reply

Okay, you always manage to make me want FMW. Like, it’s a need, not a want, really. I love the costume race- so fun!! I am still trying to figure out my costume for this year!!! Not for a race, though. haha I love the running quote, too. So cool, especially for people like me who are NOT super fast all star runners like yourself! :)

xo

Good luck finding a costume! I ran an easy 5.6 miles and I also mentally wanted to go fast but my body was saying go slow.

Cocoa Krispies are pretty darn good because they turn the milk into chocolate milk. :)

Reply

Lucky Charms!! I could probably eat a whole box at once… sick but true :)

I had to pull out of what would have been my first marathon due to a hip flexor strain. It was really crappy for me at the time, but I learned a lot from it, and have been training smarter since.

I would love to do a costume race, but I think a 5K would be the farthest I would run in a costume!

Reply

I never buy them, but I used to love Corn Pops, and Cap’n Crunch — yum!

Reply

I am so in awe of your early runs…I could barely pull myself out of bed at 7am this morning, it’s so dark. Now I feel doubly wimpy.

No Halloween races this year but my little boy is dressing as swiss cheese for the 31st…I’m so excited about it!

Brookers is adorable even mid-temper tantrum. Ugh. Need. To. Meet. Her. and YOU ha!

Reply

I went to the race website for your Halloween Half. I think the best part is the HEATED pre-race tent!

Apple Jacks!

Brooke’s outfit and ballerina bun while having the tantrum? Cutest thing ever. :)

Reply

Lucky Charms probably top my unhealthy cereal list.

I did not run today. In fact, I haven’t run since my half marathon on Sunday. I’m taking a complete rest week, running a virtual 5K with some scattered friends on Saturday, then getting back into an easy pace next week before moving in training for my Half Ironman. Trying to make sure my hip injury is all set for high gear training!

Reply

My tantrums included yelling “mad, mad, mad”. I was under 2. I thought it was family legend until I found my baby book. My mom wrote about in two places!

Ran Tantalus on Oahu today. Over 1,400′ of climbing in the first 5 miles. Kicks my butt everytime, but I love it!

Since Ryan Hall and I are buddies (lie: we met one time in which I made awkward chitchat while he signed something for me) I feel extra bad for him. It’s tough being injured and I’m sure having so much speculating come out of every injury doesn’t help.

That vest is awesome! I want one! I have serious clothes envy right now. You have so much awesome stuff.

Reply

Peanut butter Crunch for unhealthy cereal (I think that’s what it’s called).
And I have run a Santa Run with a reindeer headband. I think that’s the closest I got to running in a costume.

Reply

I had to give up a mud run a couple summers ago. Luckily a friend was able to take my bib, so at least someone enjoyed it even if I couldn’t.

Last year some friends and I ran in the Monster Dash in Rhode Island. We dressed as Texan Zombies… kind of a random costume but we think it worked! (We met in Texas when we were in middle school… and zombies are “in”… soo yeah:)

I’ve skipped a few 5k’s in favor of sleeping in! And once for a semi-injury. I woke up with intentions of running in a 5k and the second I stepped out of bed my knees buckled because my quads were SO SORE from crossfit! They literally would not work – it was crazy! It took a few days to recover from that.

I can’t remember the last sugary cereal I had! So I won’t mention the healthy ones I usually go for. :) Ummmmm do Kix count though? I love those!

Nice Brooks jacket! I like that geometric pattern they have going on this year/season. And I’ll have to check out that vest too! Speaking of Brooks… yours is cute even when she’s throwing a tantrum!

Reply

I did a Santa Run, in full Santa suit with beard. The suit came with the registration. It was awesome to be part of the sea of Santa’s. Sugary cereal Three Sisters Marshmallow Oaties. They are like Lucky Charms.

Reply

Do you do anything special to run in the dark? I remember you said a while back that you never run in the dark alone – is that still true? I want to get some morning runs in before my 8 am classes, but being outside in the dark makes me really anxious…

Reply

I was at the Tulsa Route 66 marathon when Camille Herron ran in the pink spidey costume. It was awesome! My niece & nephew loved it. :)
I should have dropped out of my spring half marathon when my IT band started hurting but I didn’t because I didn’t know how I would get to the finish line, so I just walked lol

Reply

Can you believe that I used to toss out the cereal crumbs at the bottom of the bag? It wasn’t until I start putting in more of an effort not to waste food that I finally got around to trying them, and holy.wow… I can’t believe I was missing out on all that sugary goodness. FMW crumbs are amazing, but I’d have to say that Cinnamon Toast Crunch ones are even better.

Reply

I have been OBSESSED with Cinnamon Toast Crunch lately! Except we buy the cheapo version…Cini Mini Crunch. So bad for me, but so good. And I swear the milk at the end of the bowl tastes like Horchata. So good.

Reply

I also love getting back in pajamas after run/shower–it’s the best!
Sadly, I think I am pulling out of a 50k that I planned to do in a few weeks. I have had an angry hip for the past three weeks, did the three Runners World races this weekend (bummed I didn’t see you. You’ll just have to come back next year so we can meet!) and it was really bothering me by the end of the half on Sunday. So I need to rest and get healthy–I am doing the Disney marathon in January and really want to be in good shape for that.
I’ve never done a race in an actual costume but I have run a race in a kilt, so I guess that kind of counts. :)

Reply

That vest looks so cozy!
I wish we had more salad bar type places in Canada. I think they are slowly making their way here, but come on already! I love my Camelbak water bottle, it’s great not spilling water all over yourself when you grab a drink! Best sugary cereal for me is Cinnamon Toast Crunch without adding milk. I like to lick off the sugary coating before eating the actual cereal part :)

Reply

I love those running quotes! So true and so inspirational!

I have way too many favorite sugar cereals. In fact, I am not sure there’s one I dont like. Top three: apple jacks, corn pops, & cinnamon life

Reply

Luckily I have never been injured for a race.. knock on wood! I’ve never done a race in costume but I want to so bad. Reeses Puffs and Cinnamon Toast Crunch were my jam in elementary school. It’s been too long since I had them!

Reply

You really need to frame the picture of Brooke and your water bottle – too cute!

Reply

I adore Brooke’s crazy hair! And tantrums are definitely a part of life. Even the sweetest kids have their melt downs. I mean I’d be pretty frustrated even I couldn’t talk and tell the world if I was pissed off!!

I raced in a full own grown up one piece pajama outfit. It was a red sock monkey. HOLY HECK IS FELT HOT. I was boiling about 5 minutes in, luckily it was a 5k though and it was over quickly. I unzipped the top half and tied the arms around my waist haha

I had to pull out of 3 races this year due to a torn ACL, they were the DC northface half trail, a 10k, and the marine corps marathon. I will be there cheering the runners on at a water station though!

I ran 5 miles today, tempo!

CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH ALL DAY.

Reply

I adore cinnamon toast crunch!

I spent the morning at the dentist and then the pharmacy. I need a root canal. Running and really any movement isn’t happening for a few days. But I would love to run in costume! I am going to a Halloween party this Saturday night and can’t wait to dress up!!

My favorite sugar cereal is Fruity Pebbles or Fruit Loops. Both are fantastic sugar!

Reply

C T crunch!, ;)

Reply

Dude – favorite sugary cereals? How about eating chocolate animal crackers (the ones by stauffers) with milk? Does that count? Is that perhaps the WORST cereal because it really isn’t??? Oh well :) Makes for a good dessert, that’s for sure!!! (my mom used to eat a stuffed doughnut cake with frosting and all – for breakfast. Her excuse: “It’s a doughnut, so it counts as breakfast.” (and she weighs like 90 lbs!)

whatever costume you choose, I can’t wait to see it!

Def corn pops for sugary cereal! ;)

Going as Minnie Mouse this weekend

I’ve never run in a costume. It’s just not my thing. I know, I’m boring. No Halloween races scheduled. I have a full week of stuff planned with the kids that sort of overtake anything else.

I’ve never had to pull out of a race for injury but had to twice for school. Projects were due on a Monday after race weekend. Will be redeeming myself in December for the Kiawah Island Marathon.

I ran 5 miles today while pushing G in a jogging stroller. This was really hard. I commend all moms who have done this on a regular basis. It was hard, plus we have quite a few hills that I decided I really needed to do.
I wore pants, running shirt with a hooded pullover which came off after about 3 miles. It wasn’t that cold but cold enough, plus we went at 10:00 since I didn’t sleep well last night. C was up constantly.

Favorite sugary cereal is probably Frosted Mini Wheats and then Cinammon Toast Crunch comes in next but I never buy them.

Don’t you just love the little girl tantrums. I can’t help but to laugh when G throws herself to the ground like that either.

Reply

Brooke in her ballet clothes ( at least they look like ballet clothes ) is just too cute!!!

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is my favorite sugary cereal. It’s the best!!

Reply

Cinnamon toast crunch all the way. Amazing, and doesn’t last long in my house! If Brooke likes the water bottle that much in that picture, I’d gladly give it to her!! What time do you get up to run?

Reply

I just heard about Ryan — and picked up the Runners magazine with the article about his NYCM race! What a bummer for the poor guy!

Reply

I’ve never raced in a costume, but I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I don’t understand everyone’s obsession with cinnamon toast crunch?!? My oldest daughter loved that cereal and I tried it once and thought it was gross! Lol. My faves would be lucky charms and cocoa puffs.

I once had to pull out of a hilly 10k due to Achilles tendinitis. Glad I did, cause my goal race then was my first half marathon and I didn’t want to make it worse. Best decision.

Reply

I just missed my first marathon because of an injury! Same old pelvic pain from last year…sigh. I am afraid it is a labral tear or something similarly serious since I took a full 6 months off running/3 months off ALL EXERCISE last year before being able to run again. 8 months later, I am sidelined again by the same old pain.

(Honestly I was 200% burnt out though, so the 6-week-so-far break running has not been too bad)

Reply

I think I need a vest like that for my cold morning runs…as for cereal, I used to LOVE Waffle Crisp, Cookie Crisp and Cocoa Pebbles. And there was a cereal back when I was in third grade called ice cream cones cereal. It was so good – it had the little balls as the scoops and tiny cones. Oh it really was delish, I miss it!

Reply

I truly feel bad for Hall. He has been off/on injured for the last couple of years and people snark on him so much for pulling out of races. I wouldn’t race if I had minor injuries with so much on the line. Personally I think he needs some serious time off as I think everyone needs eventually.

I’m running as a pumpkin this weekend. I’ve raced in a prom dress as well as in gold leggings before too.

Reply

Tantrums can be so funny. Unless they happen out in public and then it can be just plain embarrassing.

I ran the Disney Princess half marathon as cinderella. It was not good and the costume annoyed me the entire time. I also did a 5k as a parrot last halloween. That one was fun because it didn’t last long.

My favorite sugary cereal is Lucky Charms. I could eat them all day long!

Reply

I’m eating FMW right now while I read your blog! I have run in minor costume before (sparkly skirt, funny hats, halloween shirt) but Saturday night I’m running with a group of friends. I’m dressing as a cop (I’m the slowest in the group) and I’ll be ‘chasing’ a faster group of ‘thieves’ . The run is through a cemetery-ewww scary! I was training for my first 1/2 last year and had to pull out due to an ITB injury :( So sad about Ryan, I know he must be heart broken.

Reply

I’ve only been a runner for a little over a year and I have never run a race. I always say I have no desire to and nothing to prove but seriously, reading your blog makes me want to try a race. Finding your blog came at the perfect time for me because I started to get bored with running and no longer looked forward to my morning run, sad, I know. (it was by such chance I found your blog too. I clicked on a link from someone else’s blog that I found a recipe for roast chicken on. she had linked one of your music playlists that she used for one of her workouts. something like that. so I guess roast chicken brought us together! ;)

oh and I haven’t had FMW in ages!! since I was a kid so I actually bought trader joe’s maple FMW and they are pretty good. My 5 year old boy who only wants eggs for breakfast actually ate them. Funny.

Love the tantrums from Brooke. My baby girl did the same thing and I had to hide my laughter too. So funny to me.

Reply

Brooke in those pajamas oh my gosh. Cutest little thing ever!

I had to pull out of the Baltimore Marathon last year due to a piriformis issue (but at the time we thought it might be a bulging disk) but I deferred my registration and ran it this year instead!

I loooooooove Special K Chocolatey Delight! It’s my favorite and I can easily eat the whole box in 2 days…. #noshame ;)

I am running the Frankenfooter half marathon this weekend. It’s a costumed race but I don’t have one yet, oops. The last race I pulled out of was 4 years ago due to achilles tendonitis, ouch! I actually ran in a jacket today IN FLORIDA, (I know!), and I dont really care much for cereal, just give me the sugar ;) All the sugar please.

Reply

I have yet to pull out of any races due to an injury. Although, I’ve only ran in about 6 races over the last two years. However, I’m running 3 races in 3 weekends, the last being my first full :) I did lose my running partner due to her tendon injury though. Sad day.
I wore a Target brand long sleeve, shorts, and calf sleeves this morning. It was about 50 degrees, so not bad at all.
My fav cereal is probably Cinnamon Life or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Yum.

Reply

I love baby tantrums. I try so hard not to laugh but I just can’t!

Thankfully my injury came at a time when I don’t have a race planned but it still really sucks!!

I don’t know how you get up so early to run!

Any Cinnamon cereal mixed with vanilla ice cream is the best…who needs milk? Seriously!

Love Brook in her comfy pj’s and messy hair look!

Genius! I must now try cinnamon cereal with vanilla ice cream! :)

I’m doing my first Halloween race this Saturday. I ordered a wonder woman tshirt complete with cape. I’m excited. It is my first time running in a “costume”

Reply

Oh my goodness. Brooke is too cute with that water bottle!

I ran in a very stylish yello tank, orange socks, green headband and black capris… love running on the treadmill!

Favorite sugary cereal? Malt O Meal’s Marshmallow Mateys (generic Luck Charms), and I love the big bag instead of the box.

Reply

That vest looks awesome, especially for chilly middle-of-the-night runs! I had to DNS my first marathon because of an IT band issue. It was devastating! Oh, I love sugary kid cereal. PB Cap’n Crunch. Yum!

Reply

I pulled out my very first race because I realised I had also booked a holiday on the same weekend! And sunny beach holiday trumped race :)

Reply

Lucky Charms, hands down. Even throwing a tantrum Brooke is the cutest thing ever.

Your comment about the sweater vest totally made me have to share this with you. I am wearing a sweater vest in my driver’s license photo. Yes… I went to a high school with uniforms and we had sweater vests. I took my driver’s permit test after school one day so I went to the DMV in my uniform and I didn’t know that would be my picture on my license for the next 8 years or so. Could I pay for a new one? Yes but I’m cheap ;)

Reply

When V did that, I would calmly say, “you are not making good choices” then I would say “I am not listening to you as you are not using your words”. I would continually say this as we would walk through a store, through a check out and into the car. Then as he would have a complete fit, I would roll the windows down and lock the doors, as I stand outside and ask him if he was ready to get into his seat. Then V would fall asleep in the time of the drive home of 1.5 miles.

Thank you for sharing those great articles! They made my day :) Hope you have a great friday tomorrow :)

Ryan and I are #samesies #twinners4life with our wonky hip situations making us drop out of races.

Can’t wait to see what kind of costume you come up with. I’ve only raced in “costume” once…for a Christmas run we were a team of reindeer with antler headbands and I was super lucky…I got to lead and wear the red nose. It was not very comfy!

Reply

cinnamon toast crunch for life. SO.GOOD.

Reply

I haven’t done a Halloween race nor a race in costume yet.

So far I have been lucky and haven’t really had any serious running injuries that would cause me to have to pull out of a race.

I ran in leggings, shorts, long-sleeve shirt, my light-weight Nike jacket, and gloves! It was chilly this morning!

My favorite type of sugary cereal is Lucky Charms, but I haven’t had it in a long time.

Reply

Today I ran in my Rangar shirt & spandex pants. My cute grandpa met me at the corner and ran alongside my stroller to his house :)

You should run in this: http://www.target.com/p/men-s-skin-suit-costume-red/-/A-14567510#prodSlot=medium_1_41&term=full+body+costume

I bet you’d be super fast! haha

Thank you so much for those running quotes! They made my day. I’m suffering from taper-madness before my marathon on Sunday. It motivates me and makes me feel a lot better that Bart Yasso says he never met a fake runner!

I defintely need a running vest! Whenever I wear pullovers my arms are the first things to burn up. I’ll have to keep an eye out for one.
I am a frosted mini wheats girl too! The bottom of the box really is ridiclious…I try to save that for when it’s going to be a looong day at school ;)
I am running all of my runDisney races this year in costume, I’m really excited. Although, I don’t know if I can run with a headpiece on for 13.1 miles…but hey, if you ran as a pinata anything is possible, right? :)
Have a great weekend!

You definitely need to run as spider woman. That’d be awesome. I’ve never actually run in a real costume, unless you count dressing in 80s gear. Then again, that’s basically just spandex, so it’s practically running gear.

I DNFed the Delaware marathon this year because of injury. That was rough.

Reply

I usually run as Batgirl for my Halloween race, but this year I said if I fundraised over $100, I would dress up in one of those funny giant costumes. So – I am running as a giant Banana – apparently there is a Guinness Record for fastest fruit, soooooo?

I have been injured most of last year (two injuries, pretty much back to back) and it’s KILLING me! Not being able to clock a decent amount of miles per week is just… exhausting. And wishing I was running seems to have been the only thing on my mind since… uhrm, March. I’m really quite surprised I haven’t completely gone round the bend yet.

Reply

Probably Brown sugar frosted mini wheats…they are AWESOME!!!
When I get out of work today…I will run in my “run happy” shirt that you have too…LOVE that shirt!!! it will be a staple in my winter wardrobe, for sure!!! :)

I’ve never run injured (knock on wood!) and i’ve never done a costume run! I would love to trythe costume thing though, it seems super fun! have a great time picking one out, and good luck tomorrow!

Anything that isn’t apple jacks. I’m not too discriminating in my sugary cereal tastes.

I would go with spandex shorts/long sleeve shirt and then put a costume over from there! maybe a tutu and pink shirt + bun = ballerina!!?

Favorite sugary cereal: Lucky Charms (saving all the marshmallows until last, natch)

Costumes: Nope, not yet…although my friends and I coordinated outfits for a Dirty Girl Mud Run – but not costumes

Hated to hear that about Ryan Hall after just reading the article on him in Runners World this month.

Do you like that water bottle?? I’m trying to find a GOOD one that wont leak when tipped over and that is a good ‘suck’, if that makes any sense =) Some that I buy feel like you’re sucking 1/2 air when you drink from them! The germ-a-phob in me also needs one that you can open without having to handle the drinking spout *shudder*….so does yours fit the bill?? :)

Reply

Just wondering what size are you in the vest? I’m not sure whether I should size up or size down, but I like how its not super tight or super loose on you. I’m planning to run the NYCM in November and would like those pockets when its roughly 50 degrees… or do you think that might be a little too warm for the weather? Thanks Janae!

Hey!! I got a size medium and it is perfect for me!
