‘Change your perspective about track workouts.’ -My Mom

This morning I was complaining to my mom about how I didn’t want to do my track workout.   It isn’t the speed aspect of track workouts that I don’t like because I like going fast but I think it is just the ‘going around in circles for way too long and going a little crazy’ thing that turns me off to them.   She reminded me that if I want to hit my goals in running I have to do the workouts I don’t want to do and to just change my perspective about them and enjoy them instead of dreading them.   It worked.

My mom gives good pep talks.  Let her know if you need one.

1.5 mile warm-up and then 6 x 800 (twice around the track).  My coach wanted me to do them at a 3:10 pace and if I could go faster at the end then to do them faster.  In between each 800 I did an easy lap around the track and finished with a 1.5 mile cool-down.

Total of 7.25 miles.

IMG 1962

I also did 10 strides (30 yards at about a 6:45 pace) with my shoes off at the end.  I think this will be my last time doing shoeless strides until May because I still haven’t regained feeling in my pinky toes (okay, that might be a little dramatic but that grass was cold).  You can read HERE a more detailed version of how I do my track workouts.

Oatmeal isn’t my favorite food (I would much rather have a bowl of cereal) BUT it is the best when I walk in the door cold from a morning run.  This is the kind I have been having lately.  Maybe I just need to top it with some Frosted Mini Wheats or something…  now that would be good.

IMG 1963

Brooke is pretty thrilled about her boots. PS do you see her top tooth coming in?

My friend and I were out and about doing errands and when we were trying to figure out where to grab lunch she mentioned the grocery store salad bar.  I was a little skeptical at first but oh my goodness… it was the perfect salad bar and it is less than a mile from my house.  This is going to get expensive real fast.  They also have a soda machine within steps of the salad bar.  And a candy aisle.

And just because I have to show you her guilty face:

IMG 1970

PS I feel like you should try these at least once in your life.  I mean, can you go wrong when combining candy corn (delicious) and oreos (delicious)?

LOVE this quote that a friend sent.

Favorite (non-running) quote lately?!

How was your run today?  Give me some details:)

Warm/cold/windy/rainy/perfect….what is it like where you are today?

I LOVE oatmeal. I use to pile it up with tons of brown sugar. Lately I have been really into mixing in a bunch of applesauce and cinnamon. My standby is a lot of raisins and a little milk. Yum!

I love oatmeal and I top mine with cereal all the time! My fav is oatmeal topped with nutella and quaker oatmeal squares or honey nut cheerios. SO GOOD! :)

Definitely not an oatmeal fan. I’d much rather eat a bagel with butter every day for the rest of my life. It’s my latest obsession. I’m a big fan of that quote and an even bigger fan of your nail polish :)
Oh, and salad bars at grocery stores- some of them can be so good but others are a total miss. Crazy expensive though!

I agree that it can be hard to run on a track. Sometimes I do speed work on a flat path instead of a track to avoid running in circles.

I haven’t run yet today! I’m usually a morning runner, but I’m running tonight instead. At least it’s given me something to look forward to today!

That quote has gotten me through a lot of difficult days lately. I’m one of those weird people who loooves oatmeal. I either make it with pumpkin mixed in, or use almond milk and add bananas and nuts on top, I look forward to it every morning!

Reply

I LOVE oatmeal…I top with brown sugar (yes I know sugar is the enemy, I don’t care I’m going to keep eating), blueberries and almonds.

I need to do my 5 miles still today…plan is for after work. It’s really windy out there, so I’m glad I just have the short run. I think I’ll treat myself with some froyo and sprinkles afterwards :)

love your nails & brooke’s guilty face!

I’m sure you seen I had oatmeal for breakfast.. Love it with apples or strawberries yum! Haven’t had a run yet but the weather here is perfect. A little cloudy but the rain has held off.. Oh and Brooke’s guilty face= adorable!

Mom’s always give the best advice. I am dying over Brooke’s adorable outfit and her little boots.
So cute.
And I love that quote! It’s one of my favourites at the moment. It really is true.

Reply

I love the steel cut oats best. I usually cook it down with some apples, dried cranberries, cinnamon and brown sugar. It takes a little bit of time to prepare, but I make a big pot so I have it for a few days :). It’s perfect for fall weather!

Reply

I’m more excited than I should be that you finally tried the oreos. (suggested them to you on facebook) What did you think?? I thought they were pretty sweet, but my daughter didn’t having any trouble powering them down.

Brooke’s guilty face reminds me of puss in boots in Shrek. She is so darn cute!

Not an oatmeal fan unless my Mom makes it for me and I have no idea what kind she uses or how she makes it but when she comes to visit everything she makes tastes so good.
My favorite quote is actually a Japanese Proverb – Fall seven times and stand up eight.
My run today was pretty awesome, not fast, just awesome,
And, it’s hot here and we may be getting a tropical storm or even a hurricane later in the week. Florida, two seasons, hurricane and non hurricane, gotta love it.

Reply

I’ve never ever run on the track. I don’t understand how running fast on a track can equate to a good marathon/half marathon time. I understand the purpose of tempo runs (and credit them with getting a little faster) but track? That would make a great blog post if you and your coach wanted to educate us :)

Today I don’t think I’ll get to run and I’m a little restless as a result. It’s sunny and not too hot. But my in-laws fly in from the UK in a few hours and the place needs hoovering and OH my car needs cleaning!

Reply

I like your mom’s advice, but I’m with Cathryn! I find the track boring, and don’t really see the point in training on a surface I don’t race on — I find it more helpful to do my speedwork in a setting that is more simulatory of marathon conditions. I do think the track is great for building up mental endurance though!

Oatmeal – yumo w/ blueberries

Warm and sunny here today

Love the boots, but I love her toothy smile better!!!

I heard that quote just the other day – no truer statement was made

Reply

I loveeee oatmeal–especially with brown sugar, raisins and cinnamon. :) You should give it a go!

Reply

Put some granola and fruit on too if your oatmeal…makes a big difference! I ran late last night so I’ve been having a lazy furlough day. :-/

It’s actually very warm here for this time of year. I want Fall back!

Reply

oatmeal with a big scoop of almond butter is my go-to breakfast before a long run or race. Love it! But I cannot eat it everyday or I get sick of it. Go figure.

Brooke’s tooth is too cute! That picture is one to save :)

Reply

It’s windy, rainy, and about 50s here. Rumor has it we’ll have sun and 60s tomorrow. That’s after 5 days of wind and rain. I love our new home (less than a mile from the ocean)!

The only running today was running around the house and yard fetching things to burn in the fire pit. Gotta keep the fire fed, right? Especially when the previous owners had nasty built ins and bad trim. (It all goes in the fire pit…even in the wind and rain, I can start and maintain a fire!)

Oatmeal means apples and cinnamon for me. Maybe with a bit of almond milk.

Reply

Ahh I looove your nail polish!!
Didn’t you used to live off oatmeal??

Reply

I did! And then I discovered frosted mini wheats and my life was changed forever.

Reply

My run today wasn’t so great. About minute slower than usual for the distance and my tummy wasn’t feeling good the last mile.

As for oatmeal, I’m a maple brown sugar fan. Splash of milk on top. Yum!

Reply

YAY YOU GOT HER THE BOOTS <3 haha I LOVE those, they're too cute! Do they come in my size? ;) I've never done a track workout and I'm intimidated too! There's always other people using the field haha… my life is so complicated.

Reply

today scorched to the 80s again, so I took my run to the treadmill. Love that quote! That is perfect, and oh so true! Brooke could never be guilty ;)

I’m coming to your mom next time I need a pep talk!

Reply

Oh my gosh, Brooke is looking so grown up these days! And her guilty face is priceless :)

It is still beautiful & warm here — which is kinda strange since it’s Canada :)

Brooke’s guilty face is the cutest thing ever! I have a feeling I’d have a hard time being upset about whatever she happened to be doing wrong if I saw that face!

In business school I lived next door to Whole Foods, and after realizing that I would go to the salad/ hot bar every single day if given the choice, I had to limit myself to special occasions … those things are expensive! I only like oatmeal if I’m in the mood for it, too – I’m more of a yogurt gal for day-to-day. My run was kinda blah today, but maybe I just needed to change my perspective!

Reply

I love oatmeal. I typically add glutamine to it for recovery and then top it was bananas or some kind of fruit.

My favorite quote right now is “find the joy in the journey.” I am injured and currently not running and it has been a big struggle. I am trying to remind myself to enjoy the little things in life and remember what is important.

Reply

LOVE oatmeal. Especially in the winter! I’m a lazy bum in the mornings so I love I can take it to work with me and eat it there.

LOVE the quote your friend sent you. And it’s so, so true.

Run: 6km tempo run. I’m tapering for my first (!!!) full marathon so I’m just trying to focus and stay positive.

Weather: chilly. I woke up to 1C (I think that’s around 33F). Brrrr. I HATE being cold – so I’m pumped I made myself get out the door and run!

Love, love oatmeal actually I’m having it every single day for breakfast-it never gets old to me-warm in the winter, cooled down in summer-with fruit or yogurt-or cocoa powder-with cinnamon and honey-walnuts and bananas it has countless possibilities and it keeps me full-I dont like cereals cause they dont satisfied my hunger aka I would have to eat entire box of classic plain Special K to feel full :D
that quote is from movie and i think that you should watch it!! its called The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Im sure you would love it darling!!! its funny, comforting, sweet and full of amazing british actors…

I am trying to love oatmeal more–it so so depends on my mood!

Way to rock your track workout!

And that quote is SO freaking true.

Reply

Gah, Brooke is the cutest thing ever!

I like oatmeal with raspberries and some vanilla protein powder mixed in, yum! I don’t really care for it plain, it’s too boring.

Today it’s about 79 degrees, drops to high 40’s/low 50’s at night right now. Great running weather! But I was stuck inside on the treadmill due to a sick kid. What can you do?

That quote is awesome.

Reply

Brooke’s little uggs!!! Ahhhh so perfect. I looove oatmeal. Apple cinnamon and peaches & cream are my fave kinds! :) I also love just plain oatmeal with a little brown sugar, milk and craisins mixed in. YUM.

I like your mom’s perspective about track workouts! I used to dread them too, mainly because I was scared of not hitting the times! I haven’t tried those candy corn oreos but they do look good! It’s still warm here in Houston (80s-90s) but there is a cool front moving in Saturday… perfect timing for family pics :-)

Reply

ahhh i love brooke’s boots! too cute!

i eat oatmeal for breakfast everyday, but i switch up what i mix in. today i added in unsweetened vanilla almond milk, blueberries, raspberries, chia seeds, and cashews. it hit the spot!

It was so fun running into you today! You are my favorite and Brookeis seriously the cutest! Also, let’s talk about your 800s. Holy. Crap! You are speedy!

Steel cut oats with maple syrup, chopped dates, bananas, nuts, blueberries, flax meal, almond milk….I can get very carried away and end up with a more-than-massive bowl. Love it!

Weather should be getting cool (finally) in MN. Much better than upper 70s for my afternoon run!

Reply

Lol her guilty face looks guiltier now! She looks so grown up from her last one on June! Wow!

Reply

Oh my goodness that face! She is just the cutest, seriously.

I like your mom’s advice and need to remember that more myself. I didn’t run today though because I am tapering for my marathon that is this weekend! A big part of getting through taper for me is reading about other people’s killer workouts so thank you for that :)

Reply

Um, we are nail polish twins. Awesome.

My run was hard today. As of right now, I can’t even run a mile and yet I agreed to run a half marathon in April. Stupid, stupid decisions I make.

Reply

I eat oatmeal pretty regularly–I like making overnight oats with protein powder, and I top it with seeds, nuts and berries.

No run today, resting up for a 50K race this weekend!

We’re having a “heat wave” here in NH! Not that 80 degrees is a heat wave, but it feels HOT in October!

Yeah, my guilty face looks just like Brooke’s. And by that I mean – Yeah…RIGHT! In my dreams!!!! Cutest ever award!

Mom’s always know the right thing to say. So full of wisdom.
I love oatmeal especially when it’s cold outside!:)
Brooke’s boots are the cutest, and I love her hair!
I’m crosstraining today, but then it’s back out running tomorrow. I’m excited!

Reply

Oh, man! That guilty face is awesome–you already bought her mini-Uggs.. I think you deserve the necklace she is clutching.

Oatmeal plus almond butter.. tastes like cookie dough.

Reply

I don’t care for oatmeal but it’s good while you’re nursing. I make a big batch of monster trail mix – deluxe mixed nuts, m&ms, chocolate and butterscotch chips, and dried fruit bits. So good! The chocolate gets all melty. Love me some melty m&ms. Side note, I’ve been following you for a while and sorry for what you’re going through right now (don’t know details obvs). But I KNOW you must be doing what’s best for you and your daughter. You are an amazing mom from what I can see. Keep it up. You’re an inspirational mama to this one (I’ve got two boys right now, 2 1/2 and 8 months). Keep up the good work! :)

Reply

Oatmeal is okay. Our local Hy-Vee store has it’s own brand of oatmeal. My favorite flavor is Vanilla Cranberry Pecan or something like that.

No run today, but I am headed to the gym in five minutes. I THINK I am going to take my first cycle class. I’m scared.

Today was in the eighties, muggy and partly sunny. My daughter thought it was a bit too hot for her cross country meet this afternoon.

Such perfect weather here lately! So odd for it to be in the 80s at this time of year though in WI. I’m loving it though! I just wish they days weren’t getting shorter….

I’m about to head out for my run and it’s raining and I just want to bail because I’m a wuss. I actually really like track workouts, they’re my favorite. I don’t like running around the track either, but I love doing speed work.

Reply

i absolutely love the pictures of your track workouts. I wish that was my background when I am running lots of circles, around and around. :)

Reply

I used to LOVE oatmeal but I think I ate too much in my younger days…now I don’t like it much! If I do eat it, it is with apples & brown sugar.

My run was great today- I did a mile at a time with adoptable dogs at the Humane Society. They are so happy to get out & go!

Oh my goodness, that guilty face!!! She is so darn adorable! Addie’s too young for a guilty face. Her current obsession is putting EVERYTHING in her mouth. Blocks, books, mommy’s phone, the iPad, her own toes … any and everything! ;)

Holy Moly I can’t believe Brooke’s teeth are coming in!! COngrats on the paces you hit in your workout!

I adore the idea of throwing in barefoot strides in at the end of your workout! Do you only do them in the grass, or do you ever do them on pavement?

Reply

I could use a pep talk! I’ve been playing around with the idea of getting back into running, but whenever I think about how difficult it’s going to be to start from scratch again, I get all sorts of discouraged and give up… especially since the winter is coming and runs would have to be inside. Speaking of winter, it’s starting to feel like it! Today was cold and rainy and around freezing for most of the day. But it makes hot food (like oats) taste all sorts of amazing. I’m a huge fan of oatmeal, but it has to be topped with lots of nut butter and some kind of sweetener.

Reply

Awesome track workout those are seriously solid splits!

My run today was an 8 mile taper run, 6 miles easy with 2 at Marathon pace– run felt good but it’s warmer outside right now than it normally is this time of year so I am craving a little cooler weather— which isn’t going to happen for the marathon Sunday.

Reply

I have this card/quote as well. I framed it and it’s sitting on my shelf. It’s been sitting there for a couple of years now and it does make me feel better when I need it. Also, I may utilize your mom for a pep talk for my long run :)

Reply

Just got in from an 8 mile run and it was fantastic! This will be the last sunny day until perhaps Sunday so I wanted to get out and get a decent run in!

I like oatmeal but I definitely had to acquire the taste, I top it with fruit and nuts, always need something crunchy to balance out the mushiness lol

Okay, have to ask… Have you tried the candy corn Oreos??? People give me a hard time for how much I love candy corn, and I’m seriously intrigued…

Reply

I love how supportive your family is, they sound like an amazing bunch. Keep up the good work and the positive attitude, your are inspiring!

Awesome advice!! I did a 4 mile run last night and it felt pretty good overall. I’ve been craving a speed workout though, so I’ll have to work one in soon!!

Um everything about Brooke is the cutest. The guilty face, the laughing face, the boots the little tooth! adorable!

Hi Janae’s mum! Can you give me a pep talk? I need some motivation to go to yoga tonight as my PJs just look sooo inviting right now:).

I am just getting back into running after a couple of years off due to fertility issues (hypothalamic amenorrhea to be specific) and injury, so I am taking it nice and easy. I did a mellow 10k on the trail above my house in 56 mins. I used to do sub 40 10 k’s so this feels quite mellow. Running at any pace is just so great though! After two years off, I am reminded anew as to why I love it and missed it so!

Reply

I know this makes me odd, but candy corn just makes me sick to my stomach! As far as favorite quotes, mine will always be Proverbs 27:19. It’s such a good daily reminder to look at how I’m living my life.

Your mom gives the best advice!

I’ve been having oatmeal every morning for the past few days. Just with milk and pumpkin pie spice. Yum!

I’ve been having the same oatmeal dish every morning for about two weeks: oatmeal topped with a banana, scoop of peanut butter and dash of cinnamon. I’m in love. My favorite quote of the moment is “though she be but little she is fierce”. Makes me feel like I can accomplish anything :)

Reply

I’m definitely an oat fan, but it needs a ton of toppings. I actually like nut butter, jam and a runny egg – I like the sweet and savoury thing!

Reply

I LOVE that brand of oatmeal! But I have to top it with cold applesauce to drop the temperature because I’m not responsible enough to let it cool enough on its own…

It was raining so hard that I had to pull over on the highway to let the weather simmer down just a bit. On the bright side, I fully expect Mary Poppins at any moment.

No run today (see weather, above, and my gym membership lapsed yesterday!)

And I love your mom’s advice! When I was having a rough go with a big test at school, I whined to my mom, fully expecting the typical ‘you are so smart, you can do anything you put your mind to’ type answer that she usually would give. But that day, she told me that I had to do well, I had gotten too far in debt to be able to afford to fail now!! Some times we just need a kick in the pants =)

-i am a HUGE oatmeal fan. You just have to make it the right way. My favorite go-to way to have oatmeal is with milk, banana, raisins, honey, cinnamon and a HUGE scoop of Peanut Butter. It practically tastes like dessert and I get to eat it for breakfast…that’s a huge win in my book.

-“Whatever you want to do, do it. There are only so many tomorrows”

I haven’t seen those Oreos in Canada…I want…
And I like oatmeal. Brown sugar and milk are my favourite toppings but I do throw apple chunks and blackberries in to mix it up on occasion.

I hadn’t eaten oatmeal in YEARS until like last week–and I am obsessed. I have had it every morning since then! I like it with a little stevia, sometimes cinnamon if I’m getting wild! I found your blog recently (like this week) and this is odd…. I did almost the same track workout today only 5 x800’s at 3:20 pace with a lap in-between, a mile warm up and an 800 cool down. I am new to blogging and love all the running blogs as I am starting to ease into racing again after years off with my little minions who are now 10 and 11 years old.
The weather her in Oregon was cold and wet, I am jealous of the 80 degree weather on the East Coast! My run was great today with the exception of the last 800 in which my hamstrings were really tight from an early AM CrossFit class that included dead lifts and box jumps. Love your blog, fun to read.

Reply

I love oatmeal like any good running blogger, but mine always ends up all stringy. I like it cooked in rice milk with raisins. When I’m feeling super decadent I throw some brown sugar and fake butter in there. It’s like candy for breakfast but with the illusion of health.

Your mom is pretty awesome and her advice is perfect. Look at the ones you want to avoid like they are the keys to unlocking your inner beast…cuz that is what they are. Take your least favorite and make it your favorite :)

Her guilty face is impossible to reprimand. You sure have your work cut out for you! Our weather here today was perfect.

Reply

I’ve recently joined a running club and go to the track nights once a week on a Monday and I love it!! They’re so intense but I always feel great afterwards :) I think it’s because I’m told what to do, what speed & distance, whereas when I’m on my own I just go at my own pace which isn’t going to get me a sub 2- hour half marathon!!

Reply

Rest day from running for me. Tried to workout in the morning at home with a treadclimb and bike combo, but my daughter woke up at 6 and decided to join in (ie- take over!!). Plus it was rainy and windy– typical English combo. I miss the Fall running in Utah– I remember it was one of the things I looked forward to when I’d return to BYU each year. My younger daughter does the guilty face too, but she always pairs it with, “Are you happy, Mommy??”– kind of a reminder to not go crazy over little things. Good luck with the top tooth– once that’s out, it’s a food-a-palooza!

Oatmeal is amazing. Now I have it with mashed sweet potato, maple syrup, and apple butter. This combination was because I didn’t have anything else in my fridge but it turns out it’s really good and very fall like.

I have to be in the mood for oatmeal, but I like the instant strawberries and cream kind from Quaker Oats, it reminds me of my childhood.

My favorite quote is an anonymous one “it’s never too late to become who you’ve always wanted to be.”

I haven’t gone running in a few days (trying to lose baby weight, yay) and it’s going to be in the 80s today here in southern Maryland. It might feel like early fall again next week.

That guilty face is just too much!!

I love oatmeal-have it every morning during the week & sometimes as a “snack” on the weekend with a spoonful of pb!
So glad that you are coming to Sacramento for CIM!! I’ll be on the lookout for you.

I’m definitely a lover of oatmeal cooked with half a banana, cinnamon, and then topped off with melty peanut butter and the other half of the banana. It’s my favorite. And on special days, I throw on some chocolate chips. Lol
It’s getting warmer where I live right now (PA) and it’s in the 80s, but I think this is the last summer spell of the year. I’m excited for fall but NOT excited for winter so the longer it stays in the 70s I’ll be happy.

I honestly WISH I liked oatmeal even a little bit, because it’s so easy and good for you… but I just can’t get into it!

CANDY CORN OREOS??? Oh my… I need to try them immediately!

Put frosted mini wheats with milk to warm in the microwave. It is amazing! Texture of oatmeal/cream of wheat but tastes awesome!

I am like you in that I prefer cereal but hot oatmeal is nice. I add cinnamon to the oatmeal and then top it with a yummy cereal (usually corn flakes) – best of both worlds!
Congrats on that speed workout – crazy fast!

Love oatmeal but mostly in the winter. I get the low sugar Maple flavored one and top it with some peanut butter! I also like to make overnight oats in an empty peanut butter jar…so yummy!

Love the picture of Brooke at the end!! She is definitely your baby!! She looks a lot like your sister’s girls.

I like plain oatmeal with cinnamon mixed in…..sometimes I’ll do the whole overnight-oats-in-a-jar just so I have an EXTRA excuse to eat peanut butter.

Favorite quote is on my monthly calendar at work: “Let go or be dragged.”

My run last night was awesome! I did 5 sets of Yasso 800’s at a 3:30 pace…..with a half mile warm-up and a mile cool down. Felt great. :) This morning, I had to do a quickie run before work….just an easy 3 miler on the tready.

It’s cool and overcast in the beach cities of Southern California. I kinda like the crisp-ness that fall brings!

That’s a great quote! I try to like oatmeal, but really don’t all that much. Oh, and the guilty face? Seriously – I melted.

Brooke’s guilty face is TOO adorable! That’s going to be trouble when she grows up ;) Also, those boots are super cute on her. I bet she can’t kick those ones off! Win for mom!

I love that Brooke is a big walker now. I love how little ones want to always show off their skills!

I love that quote.
Someone gave me a magnet when so much trouble started in my life about 6 years ago. It says “Peace, it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
hugs for you Janae!

Love oatmeal! (especially overnight oats). Didn’t run today but went to the gym for a bootcamp class. I’m doing a 15 mile trail run Saturday and a 10k race on Sunday!

I like oatmeal with bananas and walnuts. If I eat cereal, I eat way too much, so I try to avoid it.

it is pleasantly warm here today! I like oatmeal with cinnamon in it, or sliced bananas and blueberries. It’s awesome on a budget. But yes I’d rather have an Everything bagel.

I like your mom’s attitude about running…my mom would be all “sit down, you’re going to hurt yourself going that fast” haha love her!

Today was strength and cross training but yesterday was a BEAUTIFUL, but hilly 5 miler. Reminded me why I LOVE living by the mountains. Really, is there anything more beautiful?

AND Brookes guilty face? I’d be in SO much trouble with that one. . . she’d get away with murder!

OBSESSED with oatmeal. It would be my desert island food. I typically do 1/2 cup raw oats, 1/2 cup pumpkin 1/2 cup almond milk then top with fruit and peanut butter. A detailed recipe on my blog :)

Plain oatmeal topped with berries (fresh or frozen) then add vanilla coffeemate creamer. Sooo good!
