Talk about a view for my Tuesday morning run.  I had to get out bright and early to get my run in and the temps were perfect (I am hoping it stays this way for the NYCM next weekend).

A great way to end my short trip to the city.

IMG 2840

The fastest shower and packing job occurred and next thing I knew it I was eating a bacon/cheese/egg breakfast bagel while waiting for my airplane.   I am actually disappointed with myself that I only had 2 bagels in the 41 hours that I was there.

IMG 2843

My first flight was to Houston and I grabbed a chicken caesar salad before getting on my next flight home.   Finished off my Dylan’s Candy bag (judging by the fact that they charge $40 a lb or something like that… she must make bank) and my book with a few more snacks.

IMG 2844

Me and Brooker are back together again.  It feels so right.

I like to call this my ‘I had 5 minutes to pack and get ready before my car came to pick me up to take me to the airport and then I was traveling for 8 hours’ hair.  I will do a tutorial for this style in the next post and then I will put it on Pinterest.

DSC 7122

After lots of eating out the last few days it felt really good to have a healthy meal of broccoli, cauliflower and chicken.  Brooke continues to be too good to be true… she downs her broccoli first and then she always wants more.

DSC 7126

And she is already trying to borrow my clothes at the ripe old age of 14 months.

DSC 7136

I think she must have learned this from her cousins while I was away.  This should be fun.

And random running fun fact of the day (from the nutritionist for the elite runners at Brooks):

DSC 7082

We talked a lot about nutrition during races and he showed this little trick of how to drink from the cups at the aid stations (ps he recommended for me to drink gatorade at ALL of the aid stations during a marathon… if I wanted to do water and gatorade that is great but to make sure to get gatorade at each station).

Close off the top 2/3rds of the cup with your hand and drink from the little opening that it forms… now I won’t finish a race covered in gatorade like I normally do.

Second fun fact: Mindy sent me the link to 25 Things Non-Runners Don’t Get About Runners.

Cinnamon Sugar bagel for sure for me as well! Though that bagel in the picture looks AMAZING!! My workouts are cross training right now as I am coming back from a femoral stress fracture – I have to rest today but yesterday and tomorrow Ill spend in the pool! Glad you had a great quick trip!

Reply

Cinnamon Crunch Bagel for sure! If it’s before a run… I like blueberry though.
I think my non runner friends and family get really tired of my facebook posts after a lot of my runs and races! GOOD thing most of my friends are runners!!

Reply

So happy that you’re back with your Sunshine :) ! We get our water/Energade during races in sachets and not in cups down here in South Africa – very easy to drink from :).

Reply

I just did 6 tempoish miles. It was my first sub freezing run of the season. I had a friend meeting me so I had to get up. It’s really not so bad once you get going. I’m glad you had a good trip. I really want a bagel now. Do they make whole grain bagels?

Reply

Glad you made it back safely!! Cinnamon raisin bagels rank pretty high up there… Although I’ve never had one from NYC so I’m sure there are tons on flavors out there I need to try! Have a great Thursday :-)

Reply

favorite bagel is an everything bagel toasted with peanut butter – yum! Brooke is too funny!

Reply

My runner friends don’t understand why I wake up early before a busy day to run to get energy. I am always so much more energized after a run!

Reply

My favorite bagel is jalapeno cheddar.

My family doesn’t understand why I choose to go outside to run in cold weather, even though I hate cold weather and refuse to wear a coat most of the time.

Reply

Jalapeno Cheddar – YES PLEASE! ;-)

Reply

I just like plain sesame seed bagels!

If my husband makes it home in time – I am off to the indoor track tonight to do a lil speed workout and maybe some weights. Otherwise I’m sure I will be demonstrating all sorts of things at track practice tonight.

I am not exactly sure what people do not get about my whole running/coaching thing. I swear that some people think it is a new thing – because they forget that I ran track for years in high school. Sometimes I get the snarky comments “you are not an athlete” which is kind of annoying, but then I get comments like “whoa where did those abs come from” haha!

Reply

I’m tapering this week so a few tempo runs and yoga today.
My friends don’t understand why I wake up at 4:30 to run with my homies nor do they understand why I actually pay to run races.

Reply

Ha I saw tha buzzfeed last night and does. Every one is so true. I’m glad you’re reunited with Brooke and that you had fun in New York! I not so aecretly wish I could have the bagels delivered to me in Baltimore every morning.

Reply

No one understands why I’ll wake up at 7 on a Saturday to run double digit miles! I’m a plain bagel kind of person. 7 easy trail miles for me today.

Reply

I’m not the -biggest- fan of bagels, but when I do get a craving for one, cinnamon raisin are pretty high up there on my list, but zesty cheddar take the cake. I normally have a huge sweet tooth, but the savoury side wins out when it comes to bagels.

Reply

I always end up covered in gatorade after races even if I’m drinking out of a water bottle. I have issues.

There are a couple things in that buzzfeed article I don’t understand about runners either and I am one!

My favorite bagel is probably asiago cheese. SO GOOD.

Thanks for the Aspaeris shout out!!

Reply

There’s a gourmet sandwich shop by my office that does homemade bagels and homemade cream cheese on Fridays, so it’s a team tradition to hit that up each week. Sea salt with veggie cream cheese for me, please!

My family pretty much gets it about running, though I don’t think they understand why I love marathons and keep going back for more.

My workout tonight is a candlelight meditative yoga class my local lululemon is putting together! Can’t wait.

Welcome home from New York! What a pretty view on your run yesterday!! Were there a lot if people out? I get freaked out running so early in the morning by myself.

Reply

Isn’t that cup trick the best?! And thanks for the reminder to get Gatorade throughout the marathon. I really need to figure out my fuel strategy for Richmond. It’s only three weeks away! I’m taking today off to rest up for my last 20-miler tomorrow. And then the taper begins! I love Panera’s Cinnamon Crunch bagels for breakfast. The Asiago Cheese bagels are so good as a sandwich. Throw a fried egg on there, and, voila, lunch!

Reply

Brooke’s videos are always the best!
I actually love plain bagels toasted with absolutely nothing on them. Or a good cheese bagel!
Non running friends and family can’t understand how I think it’s fun/enjoyable/any other positive descriptor!
Have a great day with Brooke!

Reply

I love any kind of bagel with cinnamon in it. I did have some mixed berry bagels with strawberry cream cheese on it that was pretty amazing! I’m hoping to just get in any kind of running at all today. It’s been a really off week for me- sick kiddo and complete exhaustion myself. I’m racing 2 5ks this weekend though.. Really looking forward to that!

Reply

Glad you made it safely back to Utah! Food is seriously one of my biggest motivators for quick showers. The sooner I can get good food the better.

Reply

Definitely anything with cheese for me when it comes to bagels.

Reply

I love Brooke’s “new thing”… good luck with that one! ;)
I could go for a blueberry bagel with some cream cheese on it right about now.

Reply

Looks like an AWESOME run along the harbor!!! My workout for today involves a 4 mile run and then packing cause I’m spending the weekend crewing and pacing for a friend while she runs 100 miles!!! It should be interesting because the high on Saturday is supposed be 45 and the low is 30. :/ And we’re going to be outside with no shelter for about 30 hours straight. I’m planning to bring TWO sleeping bags and wear them like snuggies. :)

Reply

They don’t get that just because I am not smiling while I run, doesn’t mean I am not having an incredibly joyous and spiritual experience.

Reply

I really love a chocolate chip bagel…man, I’m starving right now!

I’ll be doing an easy 5-6 miles today and I can’t wait to do it…I got new Brooks Pure Flows recently. :)

Reply

I love everything bagels!

Reply

I love a NY style Pumpernickel bagel — so good!

Reply

Onion bagels are the best :), It’s blueberry for, blueberry bagel and egg sandwiches are bomb!!! They don’t understand why I will get up at 4 am to get my run in, I’ve stopped trying to explain it and just started to tell them to go on a run and they’ll see what I mean haha. I’m hoping for either a HIIT Run or a fast 6 miles!!!

Reply

I do that with my water cups! Well, at the beginning when I’m still focused… get’s a little messy the further along I go…

Reply

I love poppyseed bagels! They’re not as popular here in the UK so I feel I’m missing out….

My workout today is a bit of foam rolling. But tomorrow – dance :)

My family and friends don’t understand why I enjoy running in the snow when it’s cold and dark. It’s so peaceful, plus v satisfying to be out when everyone else is in!

Reply

Non runners don’t get the “sorry i can’t drink because I am running in the morning and don’t want to feel like death” I like everything and cinnamon raisin!

Reply

Pumpernickel bagels are my fav.
Today is a 3km treadmill walk and a prenatal circuit workout from fit pregnancy.

Reply

I was supposed to do some yoga this morning, but it didn’t happen. I’m planning on doing it this afternoon now.

Reply

I think it’s hysterical how non-runners don’t get the paying a ton of $$ for good running shoes! Today’s workout will probably be a short treadmill run as I’m still in my “I did a race on Sunday” glow and hill soreness:-)

Reply

My favorite bagel is cinnamon raisin lightly toasted, YUM!! I think all my non-runner friends thing I am a little nuts, but I am totally okay with that!

I ran 4.33 this am, my first run after my half this past weekend, it felt great!

Glad you had a good trip back home, Brooke is the cutest!

Reply

i’m tapering this week because i have a marathon sunday! yay. have you tried Aspaeris capris? never heard of them.

Reply

I haven’t had a bagel of any kind in 2 years!! I stopped eating them when I was anorexic because “OH MY GOODNESS CARRRBSSSSS” and they just haven’t made an appearance back into my life since! I’m starting to crave one now…. Mmmmm ;)

Reply

Cinnamon sugar raisin bagel with cream cheese and lox…yum!

Yesterday was a nice easy hour and gentle yoga class after my track workout Tuesday!

Most people don’t get why I run “so much” or “love” it. My answer to them… “Don’t ask me why I run. Ask yourself why you don’t.”

Reply

Only 2 bagels is a travesty. Where’s the freezer bag of at least a dozen for the road? You can get candy anywhere.

I used to end races soaked in aid station beverage too. The cup trick works!

Reply

It’s a toss-up between cinnamon and blueberry. I had a blueberry bagel almost every day in college.. with butter. I am a new fan of flavored cream cheese.

People do not understand that I need to get a good workout in to be the happiest person I can be. I feel great and I am much nicer after a good run. :)

Reply

Yay! So glad you were reunited with Brooke! I still haven’t been separated from my son for longer than a work day (I’ve brought him on all three work trips I’ve had to take), but I’m sure it’s coming soon.

My favorite bagel is the french toast one they sell at Panera. So yummy!

My workout plan for today is a short 4 mile run around the White House during my lunch break at work. Hopefully I find the time!

Reply

I love plain bagels with flavored cream cheese. YUM!

I am training for a few 5-k’s and slowly working up to a 15k in March and a half in May. My training plans will be on my blog soon!

Reply

That running tip is so simple but so useful. Why have I never thought of that? I always spill water/gatorade on myself during races haha.

Favourite type of bagel: Sesame! :)

Reply

asiago Cheese bagels from panera complete me! LOVE them!!!!!!!

My non running husband doesn’t understand WHY i enjoy running, pay for races, run so much…I could go on and on…haha.

that Brooke is just the cutest thing ever!

Reply

ahaha I just knew before I watched the video that it would be her saying “no” in some way. And so it begins :)

I love blueberry bagels with strawberry cream cheese!

Reply

love those NYC bagels! pumpernickel + veggie cream cheese in one of my tops!

Reply

HAHAHA how many shoe selfies do I have?? No wonder only my runner friends “like” them :)

Reply

I’ve heard about squeezing the cup at aid stations to make it easier to drink out of! but i attempted squeezing it from the bottom rather than the top (if that makes sense?) and it was unsuccessful. Next time I’ll try the way they show in that pic- so smart!

Reply

Favorite bagel is Chocolate Chip. Although most places never put enough so I always stick my own extra ones in and melt in the the microwave (sounds gross but super yummy).

Workout today:

On the minute every minute for 10 minutes: 10 squats

Then 5 rounds:
Walking lunges (20 steps)
15 goblet squats

Followed by Tabata rounds of pull-ups and triceps dips.

Then tonight: 60 minutes elliptical

The majority of my friends understand( mostly because I have a lot of runner friends) but some don’t get why I have to run. Like they don’t understand that if I don’t run I will get cranky! They don’t understand that if I don’t run at least 15 or 20 miles this week, I’m not going to be happy. Don’t get me wrong, I do take rest days but I can’t let anything interrupt my running time! I have 5 miles scheduled today with a lot or stretching afterward, I’m super sore from yesterday’s strength training!

Reply

Bahaha. I love the running shoe selfie pic. I don’t mind them AT ALL, but Ross is always asking me what the point it. He just doesn’t get it;)

Love that you and Brooke are reunited…and what can I say, I am happy she is back on the blog. I missed her. Her head shake is adorable. Just wait until she learns the word ‘mine’. Sigh. That is one word I wish I could remove from my children’s vocabulary.

Pumpkin bagel with cinnamon cream cheese.

I did a Turbokick class at the gym today. Trying to convince myself I should do my yoga video later. I need to stretch these tight muscles. I am so lost as to why I get injured so often ;)

I learned that cup trick a couple of years ago…but I still spill water, choke etc. So I must be doing something wrong. Orrrr I am special. It is probably that.

Reply

‘Mine’ was my first word! Haha I’m sure my parents were happy about that

Reply

Finally a Gatorade drinking genius shows us how it’s done. Now I just need to perfect the form for my next race. Thanks for sharing!

Reply

I like really grainy bagels or ones with chocolate chips :)
My mom doesn’t understand why runners look at other people’s shoes first. I always notice people’s shoes and she doesn’t understand it.

I’m glad you had a safe trip. Is it weird I think your hair look really cute in that picture? I WISH I looked so pretty waking up, throwing my hair up, and getting on a plane. Lady, you are gorgeous.

Reply

Mmmm cinnamon sugar bagel is yummO!

Brooke is the cutest!! :)

Reply

A bagel sounds SO good right now. My cubical mate is eating one right now….he’d better not walk away……haha. Panera has a cinnamon crunch bagel w/almond honey cream cheese and it is AWESOME. Pumpkin sounds good too!

Today I did 4x400s (Active 400 recovery jog, 1 mile wu/1 mile cd). It felt really good!

Reply

Glad you made it home safe and sound :)

One thing a non-running friend said to me recently was, “One bad thing about distance running is that the better you get the longer you have to run.” I was like whaaaaaat, no it’s more like “the longer I GET to run, which is awesome!” :)

Reply

I vehemently disagree with you, everyone knows the best bagel is the everything bagel because you get EVERYTHING. case closed.

Reply

I’m sure Brooke is thrilled to have you back!

I love that jacket! I’m just dying to get it!

I love asiago cheese bagels. So yummy.

Reply

yay for being reunited with brooke! =)

that’s actually a REALLY good tip. there’s nothing worse than spilling gatorade all over your face/chest during a half marathon (not that i’ve done that before or anything… ;))

i used to order onion or jalapeno cheese bagels all the time during college!

Reply

Dylan’s is a great place! Did you know it’s owned by Ralph Lauren’s daughter? It’s true! Her name is Dylan. And did you also know that JCPenney carries Dylan Candy Bar candy? The one by me has a small display by the accessories section.

My favorite bagel is cinnamon with honey almond cream cheese. I wish I had one right now!

Reply

Haha! A fellow runner showed me that trick when I finished a race with my pink tanktop partially covered in red gatorade…oops! One of the things my family/friends don’t understand about running is how excited I get to go to the running store…nor do they understand why I call it the running store instead of it’s given name…

Reply

Favorite Type of Bagel is just a whole wheat bagel but I load it with Biscoff, you should try it, it’s to die for, seriously.
My non running friends cannot understand why I even like running and it annoys them that it’s all I EVER talk about.
I ran over Tampa Bay this morning, literally, over the water on the new pedestrian bridge and it was epic and beautiful.

Reply

That’s do funny- my friend and I were only just saying how annoying it was to drink from paper cups during runs. At the Two Oceans race in caps town they have water in mini plastic bags- so easy!! I think all races should do this!

Reply

I’m totally guilty of running shoe selfies… especially on Instagram! Almost every other post includes either my Garmin or my shoes ;)

Favorite bagel is everything! I also like salt bagels with tons of cream cheese.

ALLLL of my friends and family (outside of my running group) are non-runners and most of them ask me, “don’t you get bored running for hours?” they also wonder why I would pay so much money just to run with a bunch of strangers lol

Today I’ll do an easy 5 or 6 miles after work. My last 20-miler before my taper is on Saturday! :)

Reply

I love the everything bagel…and I plan on doing a T25 workout tonight after work

Reply

yum! i love savory bagels – like onion, garlic, everything, etc!

Reply

My favorite bagel is currently multi-grain from Big Apple Bagel in Bellevue. It is the only place I have found in the Seattle area with good bagels.
My family does not understand the amount of miles that I need to run while marathon training. And running at a slower pace.
I ran 4 miles this morning with a friend.

Reply

One thing I cannot stand is when I tell people I am training for a full marathon and they say, “Oh yea, I ran one of those before…..how far is that anyways?” Seriously? If you really did run a marathon, I’m pretty sure you would know how far that was. UGH!!

And, like a lot of other people have posted, most non-runners don’t understand why we pay to run races (my husband included). I get that all the time!!

Reply

I feel like that cup trick might change my life!

Any bagel with cheese….but I also love blueberry.

My non-running friends don’t get why I would pay to run in races when I can just run the same distance on my own for free :)

Today I’m doing a 35 min run with a friend…slowly starting to build up my endurance again after injury. Every run is exciting to me right now, even though they are all slow and short.

Reply

I’ll definitely be pinning that hairstyle once it makes its’ way to Pinterest ;-)
Brooke looks so excited to see you!

Reply

My favorite type of bagel is any and all that I can get my hands on! Has to be toasted though, with tons of cream cheese. :) My family doesn’t understand about my running that if I miss a day, I’m going to be super grumpy. I need the morning burst of energy to start out my day or else it’s all over. My workout today was strength training followed by an hour of pilates and a 3 mile run. Tonight I will probably go on a half an hour or so walk with the family before dinner. Brooke is adorable! What a cute pie! Glad you had fun in New York. :)

Reply

Love your blog, Janae! I was just in NYC and did a long run in Central Park. Your trip looked awesome!

My workouts today…
AM – 14 miles (left the house at 4:10AM to get this in before work!)
PM- 6 miles
Plus a lot of stretching/foam rolling! I’m a bit crazy, I know :)

Reply

I LOVE whole wheat everything bagels! Perfection. My BF is from NY and is very particular about his bagels!

That tip to drink out of cups would have helped me a lot at my half this weekend. I ended up with water/gatorade all over me and almost none in my mouth. This is getting remembered for next time.

I swam 1300 meters this morning! Recovering from that PR half on Sunday in wine country. :)

Reply

When I run it is usually because I have to hurry up with walking the dog. I know it is lame. How do you really balance out your mornings with it all and what time do you go to bed? Are you really used to getting up so early to work your butt off and am I lazy or what? I really find a juggle and a struggle to divide up my morning time between sleeping, reading scriptures, helping make lunch before Mike’s work, showering and all that. I know everyone has to do this too…so how do you make the juggle?

Reply

Awww love Brooke’s little laugh!! :) That’s such good advice about the drinking cups for races! Today’s workout is abs and cardio for me!! I’ll be getting an evening run in and I’m so looking forward to it!

xo

Favorite Bagel: Sesame Seed.
…………do you have cinnamon sugar bagels with eggs, bacon, etc. on it? Or do you choose a plain one for that?

Reply

Cinnamon raisin bagels.

Why I have to run every day.. Can’t I just skip it!

4 miles this morning and another 4 this afternoon.. + a plank challenge daily for a month, 50 squats per day.

Reply

Glad you and Brooke are reunited! Today I am going to coach Girls on the Run and then hopefully get in a three to five mile run afterwards. We are finally having our first cool weekend here in Florida (in the sixties) and it feels soooo amazing :) :)

I love whole grain bagels from Panera (I work there) and that it my usual go to but I also love to treat myself to a cinnamon sugar bagel and sometimes a plain bagel just hits the spot… totally depends on my mood!

Reply

My last run of the training session was this morning :) Just a quick 5k. Saint Louis here I come :)

Reply

I LOVE six cheese bagels (or any cheese bagel), but of course, I will eat any bagels. I didn’t do anything this morning – I’m tapering for NYCM and I can’t get up in the morning for shorter runs, so I just ran yesterday after work (plus daylight wins over dark and 35 degrees). I think your hair looks cute! And, um, I’ve totally gone to work like that.. so no worries :)

Reply

Blueberry bagel with peanut butter!!

http://expertbrand.com. Quality Performance wear for men and women!

Reply

I’m trying that trick during my next race! I usually end up covered in water. I also always refuse gatorade; I’ll have to give it a try next time.

Everything bagel with cheddar cheese is my favorite.

Reply

I love shoe selfies, not always in running shoes – ballet shoes, high heels, etc…

My latest workout was my first ever attempt at pilates with a DVD I bought :) It went very well.

Erm… I haven’t really mastered bagels. The last one I had was quite dry and solid! Maybe that’s because the uk doesn’t produce decent bagels?!

Reply

cinnamon-crumble (or whatever it’s called!) from panera!!! mmmm =] also, an everything bagel topped with cream cheese and green olives (sorry!!!) will always be a winner in my book, just because my mom always made them.

I LOVE THE GATORADE TRICK! i always have to stop and walk at water stations because otherwise NO water/ gatorade goes in my mouth! sad.

i’ve been sick, so light walking and yoga these day! did a half on sunday though =] xx

Reply

Welcome home! I’m going to have cinnamon sugar bread for breakfast now – thanks for the inspiration!

Reply

Favorite bagel is definetly blueberry with strawberry or apple cream cheese.

My husband is the only one that really “gets” my running. The rest of my family and friends have a “good for you” attitude, but their eyes glaze over if you start to talk about it.

I’m six weeks into training for my first marathon. This morning I had 12 x 400 intervals with a 400 recovery and a mile warm up and cooldown for a total of 8 miles. Awesomeness!

Reply

Why didn’t I think of holding the cup like that?! Genius!!!
Hope you had fun in NYC…Serendipity’s is my favorite there for giant hot fudge sundaes and Frrrozen Hot Chocolate!

Reply

My non running friends (mostly my mom) didn’t understand that I workout almost every day all year long. It’s not just a seasonal hobby.

Today’s workouts consisted of crossfit wod fran (crossfit is always hard, but especially hard when you only go once every 2 weeks) and a nice 25 mile bike ride after a 6 week hiatus. That felt good.

Reply

I’m all for blueberry bagels…especially if strawberry cream cheese is involved!

Reply

Asiago cheese bagel.

My non-runner counterparts don’t get my early wake ups!

Reply

Love that video of Brooke!

Reply

Cinnamon sugar too! Panera has delicious ones!
The fact the I “enjoy” running! People can not imagine that someone would enjoy it! Silly Non Runners!
My workout for today: I havent ran since Sundays 1/2, but I did work my abs and legs!

Reply

I was trying to explain some things to my non-running coworkers including black toenails, gu, and chafing. They just do not understand the appeal of being a runner.

Reply

I’m a sucker for the everything bagel!

Reply

Brooke looks so much like Curly in that video..so adorable, how can you not love that face

Reply

My favorite type of bagel is cinnamon raisin.

Something that my non-runner friends/family do not understand about my love for running is why I do it. They only see it as exercise and running a lot of miles at a time.

Today we had a 5 mile run, but we have our last long run (20 miles) on Saturday!

Reply

What an awesome tip about the cup! I’m always drenched after an aid station!

Reply

Haha I saw that list about the runners/non runners too and immediately thought of you!

Reply

I love that tip for the cups at aid stations, that was a life saver a couple of weeks ago for me!

My friends and family do not get why I’m dying to run right now, even though the top of my foot has been hurting off and on since my marathon three weeks ago. I just want to suck it up and run, but my husband and my physical therapist sister-in-law have talked me out of it. Fingers crossed it’s not a stress fracture!
