Is it weird or normal and dedicating your miles.

Quick poll:  Is it weird or normal that my sister eats these wedges all by themselves?  I think it is weird.  She thinks it is normal.  I always put mine on bread/crackers/veggies etc. but who knows…  Maybe I have been missing out this whole time on eating plain cheese wedges.

My sister and I took Brooke on a walk and then came back and had a lay on the ground and read books kind of a day.

IMG 1708

I know it seems as though I have Subway sandwiches daily but I need you to put yourself in my shoes.  Just imagine having your dad tell you all of the time that he is going to Subway and then asking you if you want him to bring back a sandwich for you?!?

Just admit it, it would be impossible for you to turn that offer down too.

Brooke was disappointed in me for being too lazy last night to change out of my sweats for our Target trip.  I’ll make it up to her by washing my hair today… I know, I know, that really is quite a sacrifice.

IMG 1710

On the drive home there was a froyo stop.  I stuck it into the freezer until Brooke went to sleep so that I could eat it while watching Parenthood.  I think my goal is to re-watch the entire series every night after Brooke goes to bed.

And a picture of Brooke and my aunt from Sunday night that I really liked.  Brooke has recently become a speed walker!

A reader emailed me the other day telling me about how she dedicated each mile of her recent half-marathon to somebody important to her.  I have heard of this before but I thought about it a lot after she wrote me and realized that this is probably the best idea ever.  I love the idea of thinking about someone that you admire/that has done so much for you/that has been an example to you/that you love to pieces each mile along your race.  Talk about a great way to push yourself during a race.

I am starting to compile my 26.2 names for my marathon in December.   This is going to be good.

Have you ever dedicated your race or each mile of a race to somebody?

What restaurant do you eat at the most?

How often do you wash your hair?

-2-3 times a week.

Totally eat those wedges by themselves–they are great when you’re backpacking! :)

I dedicated my miles during my marathon..it felt so good! I actually got a little emotional during some of them…thinking about someone that important to me combined with the pure emotional experience of running a marathon. It was lovely!!

I only wash my hair a few times a week too but my question is how do you have your hair DOWN most of the time?? I can’t not wash my hair and still wear it down. You are a lucky lady!

Brooke is the cutest as usual :)

Reply

Yes yes! My question exactly.. I am torn between nice hair and working out.. it seems as though both is just impossible for me.. If I blow dry and straighten my hair, you best believe I am keeping it nice for 2-3 days.. aka not working out.. please please pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease do a hair routine post.. I know it’s silly.. but we’re silly girls!

I love how happy Brooke is all the time. That owl hoodie. I need it in my size pronto.

When I ran my first half marathon I dedicated the race to family members that had passed away. I wrote their names on my shoes. It helped me to push through.

I have to wash my hair EVERYDAY, otherwise it is just gross. However, I only “fix” it occasionally.

aww oh i love that idea of dedicating a mile to somebody important. thats a great idea!! i wash my hair 3-4 days a week, or so. is that normal? i dont even know. and look at brooke go!! she looks like such a good walker now!

I think that’s a great idea to dedicate your miles to people! What motivation right there. I was my hair every day or it gets super grrrreasy!

Reply

I love Parenthood!! Sooooo excited for the new season to start this week!

Reply

I’ve never done that, but it sounds like fun to come up with the list, then even better to be thinking about that person rather than the race!! I always go to Togos!! They know me and my bf all too well haha. I wash my hair 3 times a week. And no more than that haha.

Reply

I don’t do it often, but sometimes I’ll eat the cheese wedges by themselves… They’re creamy and tasty, what’s not to love? :D I’ll pass on the Subway, though… I went through a phase in college where I ate Subway multiple times a day, and I think I ODd because even the smell makes me a little woozy these days.

As for dedicating miles, I totally love that idea. But who would you dedicate the .2 to?

Reply

My hair would be fine to skip days washing, but I have to wash it every day because I’m active and sweaty pretty much everyday, and it’s curly so if I sweat with it in a pony-tail, there’s no going back!

I like that idea of dedicating miles to people. I’ve also been a rower for 6 years and we like to do “Power Tens” and have ten strong strokes in which we dedicate someone’s name to each stroke. Sometimes I like to do power tens in my running races too :)

Janae,

My mother-in-law shared with me this blog yesterday and it reminded me of you.. http://www.singledropsofjoy.com/

It’s written by her cousin’s daughter who is the mom of a beautiful pre-schooler and recently went through a divorce. She lives in Utah and has her stuff together!

Now onto those questions….

I wash my hair 3-5 times a week, though if I took a bit of soap with me outside, I could wash it every day. (Thank you, Washington!)

I’ve never dedicated a run to someone, but sometimes I’ll focus on something special when I’m running. Take for example… focusing on being grateful for my body or being grateful for my life.. or just slowing down to listen..really listen.

I probably eat at a Ya Kun Kaya Toast most often – it’s a Singaporean coffee shop chain that serves cheap local kopi (coffee), eggs (very runny), and brown toast (with butter and cinnamon sugar or kaya, a local jam). A set that includes all three things is about $4 USD, and one of my favorite snacks!

I wash my hair ~2 times/day. That’s what happens when you have short hair & live in the tropics….

I was at a low spot in life and my 70 something Grandfather inspired me to get off my rear and do something about it. He does weights, rides a bike, and goes on a 3 mile walk every single morning. So I tried to be like him and I started out walking, then adding a little jog then before you know it I signed up for a half and I dedicated my first half marathon to him. I wrote him a long very emotional letter letting him know how much he inspired me and helped me become a better person. One year later i’m on to marathons….

I have never dedicated a race or miles, it is a cute concept though! Restaurant… I would say movie theater popcorn… I wash my hair 5 – 6 days a week. I sweat like crazy so I shower every time I work out. Now if I go nuts and skip a few days my person hygiene takes a nose dive as well : )

Reply

I use to think I needed to wash my hair every single day… I try to skip a day or two now so I’d say 5 times a week on average. It helps that I have natural wavy hair so I just throw some product in it and pretend I live on the beach ;)

Reply

I wash my hair once a week, but I “style” it every morning (which usually just involves wetting it to tame frizz, adding some mousse and letting it air dry). I have curly hair that’s super easy to work with, so I got lucky I guess!

Once I dedicated a race to a friend’s husband who was dying of cancer. That was the only time though.

So many of my favorite things in one post! Menchie’s! Subway! Target!

Sounds like a great day to me :)

A read-on-the-floor-all-day day sounds really great right now. I dedicated my last marathon to my uncle (I did Team In Training) and it helped me throughout the training and the actual marathon. He passed away before I ran the marathon but I swear he helped me wake up at 4:30am to do my long runs and kept me motivated throughout training and especially throughout the marathon.

And I LOVE Parenthood. I watched all the free episodes on Amazon Prime and am waiting for Season 4 to be free so I can watch that. I am currently watching Army Wives – I’m embarrassed to say how much I love it. I was a military brat though, so it’s fun to reminisce about military base life while watching it.

Reply

I haven’t ever personally dedicated miles to anyone, but I ran the Air Force Half Marathon on Saturday, and LOTS of people in the marathon and half both had shirts on that said “I run for wounded warriors,” “I run for those who can’t,” and many shirts with the names of soldiers on the back. So awesome I get chills just typing that. There was also a man who runs every marathon in honor of a fallen solider and gives the medal to the family. The Air Force Marathon is so cool you should definitely put it on your bucket list Janae! I’m still smiling just thinking about it! :)

Reply

I always run for my daughter. She has digeorge syndrome and has had 2 open heart surgeries and foot surgery and has low tone. She can’t walk very far so I don’t know if she’ll ever be a runner but she wants to be because she wants to “run like mommy”. So, when I’m running, I always tell myself that it’s for her. It’s all for her.

Reply

I have never dedicated my miles to someone but I think that would be a great idea and would really help to get through those last miles when its really tough! great motivation! I wish my hair about 3-4 times per week. I have curly hair thatI have to straighten every day so I try to avoid it as much as possible :)

Reply

That is a pretty interesting way to push yourself on the full marathon. Wow, you know I would love to do that but I’m not sure I have 26 people to dedicate it too LOL. The .2 could go to my adorable niece. I guess that will be my other goal for the marathon ha ha.

Reply

I can’t say that I’ve ever thought to eat those cheese wedges on their own. I’m sure they are delicious, though.

I’ve never dedicated a run, but I have thought about people while running and that helps get through tough miles sometimes.

I guess the restaurant we get food from the most is the local pizza place since we usually get pizza once a week.

Reply

When I ran in college I had a friend pass away the Thursday before a big race Saturday. I ran it for her and it went awesome! I pred by a ton and felt full of energy.

And yes, I eat those cheeses alone. Delicious.

Reply

There is a Korean BBQ place near us that is our go to “what do we want for dinner” place. So tasty and affordable! I wash my hair3-4 times a week. I used to wash it everyday and just thinking about that makes me cringe. What was I thinking?!

Reply

I love that idea to dedicate each mile to someone different. I think I may do that for my half in a few weeks. It will really help get through the miles and it makes you feel good while you’re doing it! I personally can’t eat cold cheese. I’ll eat it on pizza or in mac and cheese or grilled cheese, but I don’t like it plain. So I guess that makes me the opposite kind of weird as your sister.

Reply

I’ve never dedicated miles during a race to anyone… usually I’m pushing so hard I can’t think straight! However, the longest race I’ve ever run was only 12k, so a marathon or half-marathon might be a little different!

I usually wash my hair with shampoo once a week; however, I’ll rinse it with water and a little conditioner about every other day, depending on if I’m wearing my hair down. I have really loose curls which do not hold up well overnight, so I have to rinse them to refresh them, but if I use shampoo every day my scalp is a dry flaky mess! Yuck.

Reply

I don’t think I would like the cheese wedges alone. I like them on toast with avocado or an egg. I also like them on steamed veggies.

I probably could eat Subway once or twice a week at the most. Their veggie sandwich is just okay.

The restaurant I eat at the most is definitely Chipotle. I could eat their veggie bowl everyday!

I wash my hair every three days. Anymore than that makes it greasy.

Reply

I eat the laughing cow cinnamon wedges on their own. SO, so good it should be illegal. Maybe that’s why they’re starting to disappear from my grocery stores, haha.

Reply

I mean, if you leave out the cracker you have more calories to spend on cheese so really it makes sense… I’m also not a cheese eater.

I love Burger, Tap and Shake in DC because they make a delicious veggie falafel burger that they’ll put a fried green tomato on top of. Delicious. Plus Chipotle people are getting difficult about filling the bowl up with just fresh tomato and the corn salsas.

the hair gets washed after every run, especially in the summer, so about 5ish times. I’m too lazy for blow dryers though. No upper body strength.

Reply

I don’t think I could turn down Subway either…it’s just so good. And I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Laughing cow wedges by themselves either – at the very least, they need a rice cake.

I love the idea of dedicating miles to different people! Seems like a great way to keep yourself inspired during a race.

Reply

My go to restaurant is a thai place I go to at least once a week. Darn. Now I want to go there today because I mentioned it. it’s so good!

I wash my hair maybe 3 times a week. I know it sounds gross but sometimes I am like wait when was the last time I washed it?? It does NOT get greasy. I am blessed with non greasy hair.

Reply

I think that’s such a great idea to dedicate miles to people.
It sounds like a super special thing to do.
And I also think it could help give you an extra push when thinking about that person.

I wash my hair about 2-3 times per week as well. If I wash it more it ends up super gross and stringy feeling. My Sister is a hairdresser and said 2-3 times is a good amount if you want to keep it silky feeling – so I’m assuming that’s right then;)

Reply

I just started watching parenthood I’m on season two. It’s such a great show!!!

Reply

I love the idea of dedicating each mile to someone! It would especially help during those last hard miles of a marathon!

Reply

I just recently heard someone talk about dedicating miles, and I LOVED the idea. I think it would really help me push through the pain. This person only dedicated the last five miles or six miles of her marathon since that’s when it really gets tough for her.

Also, I’ve never had Laughing Cow, but I would definitely be okay with eating it all by itself. Cheese is just that good in my opinion.

Reply

i need to wash my hair WAY more often than I do. My boyfriend sometimes says “WOW what did you do to your hair?” and I have to say “oh… uh… I finally washed it…” hahah

Reply

My kids eat those cheese wedges by themselves all the time….I don’t think they have ever eaten them with anything…I prefer good old fashioned string cheese :). I wash my hair 5 times a week and we hardly ever eat out so I am no help there :).
Dedicating miles is a very cool idea…maybe that would help me get through the last 6.2 without walking!

Reply

I haven’t dedicated my race, but I think that’s a super cool idea.
I eat at a local Chinese place, they even ask us where our kids are if we’re missing anyone. While I was preggers with my second, the girl at our burger place knew my voice over the phone and would remind me if I forgot anything (oy!)
I have super thick, gets greasy easily kind of hair, so I was it pretty much every day when I’m working out and I skip washing it on rest days for the most part.

Reply

I’m just curious if you are going back to get back into teaching? Or what you are going to do for employment?

Reply

for a couple of marathons, i’ve dedicated miles. i had to write all the names down my arm in sharpie so i would remember! it’s really fun. people fight over mile 26, 1, etc. when i dedicate a mile, i pray for that person at the start of their mile.

Reply

Brooke’s front bottom tooth just makes her smile look TOO CUTE!! Love it :) I could never eat those wedges by themselves. Ick!

Reply

I think about my kids quite often when I run so I guess that’s similar to dedicating my miles them! :)

Fave restaurant: P.F. Chang’s or Cheesecakr Factory…I refuse to choose just one!

I was my hair 5-6 days a week.

I love Brooke’s owl shirt, she’s such a hoot!!! ;)

Reply

I 100% eat laughing cow cheese wedges by themselves! my friends think I’m weird too, but I LOVE them!

Reply

I enjoy eating laughing cow cheese straight up! I also enjoy dipping my carrots in it. I just love those cheese wedges! I love that idea about dedicating a mile to people who are important to you! Proud that I only wash my hair 3 times a week, lets be honest I wouldn’t shower some-days if I could get away with it!

Reply

I usually get around to washing my hair 2-3 times a week as well ;) I just always seem to find a better way to spend my time and dry shampoo has given me the excuse to never wash my hair!

I love subway and which wich and probably eat at one or the other at least once a week. Speaking of restaurants I will be in Salt Lake City next week on a business trip and have been asked to look into our dinner location… do you have any suggestions?!

Reply

I LOVE that idea of dedicating your miles to someone, that would be a great way to motivate me through the pain/exhaustion and focus on those people instead and on why I can’t give up for them. I’m using that idea on my next half marathon in Nov, thanks for the idea!

I love Parenthood, I can’t wait until the new season starts too. So good, but it makes me cry almost every single episode.

Reply

I’ve dedicated miles before. I’ve just done it mainly for family members and my kids. Sometimes I’ll load a couple songs that I know each of my kids loves so when i hear it on my playlist I’ll run those miles and think and pray for them. Love your blog.. you keep me motivated!!

Reply

Random question but where are your sweatpants from? They look thick and cozy and I love that they have pockets! its that time of year!!

Reply

I dedicated the last couple of my marathon miles to folks, but I almost found that to be a little emotionally taxing since I started getting choked up at the end and needed to save all the energy I could!
The restaurant I eat at the most is this place that we go to for breakfast called the Southport grocery. They are known for their “grown up Pop Tart” that is this ooey gooey cream cheese filled with jam and they have the best potato hash EVER. *they probably use a stick of butter, but its worth it!*
I have short hair so bed head is a real drag when I can’t pull it back into a ponytail anymore. I end up washing my hair about 5 times a week. I could probably go more if it weren’t so darn windy and the wind makes my hair extra greasy after running. I also bike a lot to commute places and helmet hair = no good. Like I said, if I could rock a ponytail, I’d probably only end up washing my hair a few times a week.
Hope the rest of your week goes well! I got over a 5 mile hump recently (I haven’t been training for anything and my mileage has stayed super low) and got in a good 7.5 miler today along the lake. Hooray! I love getting back into longer distances!

Reply

Eating that cheese alone is weird. I much prefer it on a bagel. I just LOVE that picture of Brooke in the cart; her shoes, that little tummy sticking out, what a cutie pie!

I think it’s safe to say that I do most of my eating out at Chipotle. Should I be embarrassed to admit that I wash my hair twice a week? I’m not. It just dries my hair out to wash it too often, and let’s be real I’m too lazy to dry/style it more than twice a week.

Reply

I did that one time in a half marathon. I wrote their name on my arm next to each number. It made the miles so by FAST as I was focusing in praying for/about that person!!

Reply

I LA-LA-LOVE Parenthood! Are you so stoked for the season to start agian this Thursday? ANd I wash my hair about 3 times a week. I kinda like it that way, mainly because I”m lazy. :)

Reply

I have never dedicated a mile of each race but I do think about other runner’s and/or family members struggling while I run- it keeps me motivated and thankful that I can run when others can’t!

I LOVE frozen yogurt…so I eat at fro yo places the most…does that count? Panera is always a go-to!

I wash my hair 3 to 4 times a week- dry shampoo is a lifesaver! I luckily have dry hair anyways, but I sometimes wash my bangs when my hair is looking greasy:)

Reply

I love Parenthood and used to watch every single episode. Then I fell out of the habit…I think I should try it again.

Those laughing cow wedges are delish but I’ve never had them just by themselves!

And I think dedicating miles is the best idea ever. Talk about a great way to make a race more meaningful

Reply

I always have to put Laughing Cow wedges on something, they are too soft to eat by themselves. I’m currently re-watching Parenthood too. I cry every single episode, every time!

Reply

I love the idea of dedicating miles! It will give you something/someone to think about each step of the way and I’m sure it will make all of those individuals feel pretty darn good! Can I represent the .2? LOL

I have eaten a lot of Subway this month for Subtember too. Just can’t pass it up.

If I don’t wash my hair everyday, I will be a complete grease ball. It’s just not an attractive look. :)

Reply

I am pretty excited that Parenthood comes back this week. I love this time of years… Fall Premiere Week. I wash my hair pretty much every day. I don’t like the way my hair feels when I don’t wash it. I haven’t tried to not wash it every day on purpose though so who really knows.

Reply

Oh that picture of Brooke with you on the floor is so cute! I am loving those teeth:)

I have heard of dedicated miles but what an awesome motivation and a recognition to those you love. As far as restaurants go I’ll eat at one frequently then get burned out and change. So I usually rotate between Panera, Cafe Rio, Olive Garden, and Red Robin. Having curly hair I really need to wash every day otherwise it looks like a mess:)

Reply

I am BEYOND excited for Parenthood to start again! I just rewatched the last few episodes so I would remember everything that is going on. I got really into the show over Christmas last year when my husband had the flu and I was 6 months prego. New Years Eve 2013 was rung in by watching a Parenthood marathon alone on the couch (with lots of ice cream).

Reply

I’m running my first marathon in November and I plan to dedicate the last 6 to people- I don’t think I could remember 26 people!

I wash my hair daily and have been known to wash it twice/day. My hair stylist thinks I’m crazy, but I can’t stand how my hair looks unwashed.

Reply

I’m like you – I will use Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges on veggies, crackers, sandwiches, wraps, etc., but I’ve never tried them by themselves!

I love the idea of dedicating each mile to a person you love and care about – so awesome! I would think that it makes you even more motivated for each mile which is just awesome, and I’m sure it makes the time fly!

I wash my hair every other day. I would only wash it like 1-2 times per week if it didn’t get so oily. ;)

Reply

Which marathon are you running in December??

Reply

Love the idea of dedicating each mile of a race to someone special! I’m going to make a list for the Richmond Marathon, saving the last 3 miles for my daughters and husband. When my legs are giving out and I’m dragging big time, thinking of them will help me push just a bit more to reach the finish line!

Reply

I vote totally normal to eat the wedges by themselves!! I especially like the Chipotle & Queso Fresco variety.

There’s a restaurant in Houston called Ruggles Green that is my FAVORITE – you would love it. Best veggie burger ever. I am not ashamed that I went there three times last week.

Hi Janae!
I dedicated a mile to a person I love at a half marathon I did in March. At one point, I had planned to dedicate it to my grandmother and as I was running past the place where my beloved grandmother used to live. (She was an awesome lady and I was so sad when she died 20 years ago.) As I was passing with tears in my eyes, someone passed me and said, “hey, you have a sweat mark in the shape of a perfect heart on your back.” After that, more and more people would mention it. At the end of the race, I had a picture taken of my back and sure enough, there it was. It was very strange but I felt her with me for sure. I think it’s a great way to run the race and it was a very emotional day.
Wishing you peace, strength and happiness,
Lisa :)

I have tried to dedicate the last 6 miles of marathons to people but my mind starts wandering and it never works. hah.
I love laughing cow cheese, but I cannot stomach it by itself. The texture grosses me out.

After my first race, I became in love with helping out others by doing something I love. I wish I would have read more about running so I could have put the hundreds of miles on the treadmill to good use! I wash my hair every day because it will look super greasy if I don’t. I think you could run the .2 miles for a pregnant friend since the baby isn’t a full person yet! :D

Cheese thing – weird
Restaurant I eat at most – Panera Bread
Wash my hair – It used to only be 3 or so times a week, but since I’ve given up trying to straighten it or do it in any way and embraced my wild woman hair I wash it more because it doesn’t take forever to do afterwards.

Reply

I LOVE the idea of dedicated miles to people important in our lives – I think I’ll do that for my 13.1 in October!! I’ll do a post with people’s names and their miles before then.

I was my hair too often, and it cries. I really need to stop loving the ‘poo so much.

Favorite restaurants – does TCBY froyo count???? Also – I noticed you said you put your froyo in the freezer to have later…how does that turn out? I’m always too scared to bring it home…does the texture get weird/melty?

Reply

I wash my hair a minimum amount of 4 times a week, sometimes more. I wash it every other day. So the dry shampoo works super well? Your hair always looks really good and mine would look so horrible if I ran like you and didn’t wash it haha

Reply

The wedges are great on their own. I’m with your sister on this one!

I don’t really eat out because I’m cheap and would rather spend my money on running clothes! But, my favorite restaurant these days is the Greek Corner. So good!

I don’t wash my hair everyday. Depending on how sweaty I get during a workout, I can go a few days without washing. Luckily, my hair is long enough to pull back! :)

Have a great day!

I just started reading your blog and I just started running about 6 months ago. I love both! Is it weird that I now think about you and wonder what you are doing and check your blog? This has never happened to me, haha! I feel like we are friends. Anyway, just a little bit of love for this Tuesday!

I am starting my 26.2 list today. I love the idea of dedicating a mile to someone that has helped me get to where I am in my running journey.

These days, I’ve been eating at El Pollo Loco and Chipotle a lot. Mmmm the burritos from El Pollo Loco are so yummy :)
I’ve never dedicated each mile to someone, but that sounds like a great way to get me working hard during each mile.

If you need someone to think about for mile 24…. I’m available. Just sayin.
I love that idea. My first marathon is October 27th, I need to start making a list.

My hair is pretty curly and doesn’t need to be washed very often, so to be honest, I wash it maybe once every couple of weeks? I condition every day, though.

i LOVE dedicating miles. it motivated me throughout my first marathon.

What a great idea to dedicate your miles to someone- I have 13.1 Saturday and I am going to do this!

Reply

Have you ever dedicated your race or each mile of a race to somebody?
Last year I dedicated my Utah Valley half marathon to a close family friend whose funeral that day. This year I dedicated it to him again. Both times I hit huge PR’s

What restaurant do you eat at the most?
We eat at a local, family owned one most often, if you get to Heber you will have to try Dairy Keen.

How often do you wash your hair?
I wash it 2-3 times a week. I can get away with it down the first two days, the third day is definitely a ponytail or braid day.

Reply

I dedicatede every mile of my Ogden half marathon to my mom. She died in 2007 of cancer and I trained with the Huntsman Hometown Heroes so it was an amazing journey. Everything I am I owe to her.

Reply

I haven’t ever dedicated my miles to someone, but it’s a neat idea.

I wash my hair at least once a day, and many times twice. I absolutely cannot go to work without washing my hair or I’m a grease pit by noon. I have to shower after exercise too because I get really sweaty.

For restaurants that we eat at the most, I have no idea! I probably eat “out” mostly at Panera, but I’m not sure that qualifies as a “restaurant.” There is a cool local pizza place here that has a nice corner with toys and chalkboard walls where the kids can play (even during dinner). We haven’t been in ages, but I do love it.

Reply

There is no such thing as too many Subway sandwiches. And I LOVE that idea of dedicating each mile to someone you love! What an awesome motivator!

Never dedicated any miles. Running tends to be a very personal, selfish activity for me. I eat at Wendy’s way too often because there is one at the hospital where I work. If you wait too late and you didn’t pack enough food it is the only option. I have to wash my hair every single day. It is so fine and greasy. It would be super disgusting if I didn’t wash it.

Reply

I love the idea of dedicating each mile to someone. I’ve considered getting really serious about it and even working my playlist around those people as well.

I’d have to say my favorite restaurant right now is Silver Star up in Park City. The most incredible views and the best salad around!

Reply

I eat the wedges by themselves, too : )

I’m impressed that you were able to put the ice cream in the freezer and wait to eat it. If I know I have immediate access to ice cream, there’s no way I can hold off eating it!

Reply

Weird to eat those wedges by themselves. It’s be like dipping a knife in spreadable cheese and eating it off the knife. Strange.

You know what’s life changing? Spreading one of those wedges ON YOUR SUBWAY SANDWICH! I stopped getting their cheese on my subs. I also don’t get any dressing. When I get it home, I get out a wedge of laughing cow light and spread it on my sandwich. AMAZEBALLZ.

I have very thick, color damaged, naturally curly hair. I wash my scalp *maybe* once every week or two. I do use a mixture of baking soda and water on my in-between days when it starts to get gross – maybe every third day. I do rinse my hair every single day, and I use conditioner every single day.

I absolutely love the idea of dedicating every mile of your race to someone special. I am contemplating my first half marathon in the spring, and I plan to raise money for the children’s heart foundation. I think dedicating every mile to someone is nice additional incentive. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, and I eat out at Moes Southwest Grill at least once every week.

I love laughing cow and they have so many other fun flavors too! I eat it plain, and so does my husband. I’ll also pair it with some wheat thins, but plain cheese is soooo good!

Reply

i love the idea of dedicating each mile to a loved one :)

i don’t have a specific “go to” restaurant, but it’s usually a sushi restaurant!

Reply

The only time I dedicated any miles was when I did the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K. I lost my mom to breast cancer and wore her picture while I ran. The Santa Barbara Marathon takes place on Veteran’s Day weekend – the final mile was lined with flags so I did think about our servicemen and women during that time.

We don’t eat out often, but we probably hit Subway about once a week! And if someone was offering, I’d take it everyday ;)

Reply

I think that’s a great idea to dedicate miles, I think my only problem (especially with a marathon) would be remember which mile was for who while I was running!

Reply

I have never done the mile dedication thign but it might be just what I need to get through my first half marathon!

We have some local places we go a lot but Panera is probably the one my son and I frequent the most. Unless Starbucks counts as a “restaurant?” :)

I probably wash my hair 5-6 times a week.

Reply

I’ve never dedicated my race to somebody, but that’s a great idea!

I’ve never actually had Laughing Cow Cheese. To be honest, I’m probably the one person I know who isn’t crazy about cheese. I recently started eating but, but only with crackers.

Except cream cheese. That stuff is crack and it’d put it on ANYTHING.

Reply

I LOVE Laughing Cow cheese wedges!

I wash my hair about 3-4 days a week, and I hate hair washing days. I eat a Chick Fil A all the dang time. I could eat it for every meal and never get sick of it.

Reply

I don’t I could eat the wedges by themselves. I have to put it on something. Too rich. That’s a super good idea about dedicating miles. I’m going to have to think on that. I wash my hair daily sometimes twice if I work out in the evening and it gets all wet and sweaty. Probably too much but I can’t help it :)
Brooke is adorbs as usual. What a sweetheart she is!!

Reply

probably eat at panera the most.

i dont dedicate each mile to someone (good idea though) but I often dedicate the last couple of miles to people (mostly my grandparents, aunts, etc that have passed)

so question for you- you only wash 2-3 times a week yet workout almost everyday—-do you use dry shampoo? ive tried dry shampoo but sometimes your hair gets SOAKED from your workout…then what? youre hair is so nice too. i hate having to wash it all the time- not healthy… i would love to know your secret! i wash mine 6 times a week.

Reply

I love it!! I dedicated the last 6 miles of my first half marathon to people and it really really got me through it! I think it’s such a great idea because those people are so important in your life and it’s all positive!

Reply

I love the idea of dedicating your miles!!! I will try to implement that for the upcoming Chicago marathon – I get so lazy the last few miles, and I really need to find something to keep me mentally engaged.

I wash my hair ideally twice a week, but sometimes three times. Sometimes I’ll even wash it two days consecutively if I really need it to look pretty…which I hate, despise and loathe doing!!

Reply

I really only wash my hair for work.
Note: My long runs are often on the weekends, when I don’t work. I’m just saying. . . My poor husband.

I knew when I was signed up for the Detroit Marathon that I would need to focus on something different each mile so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed with all 26.2 miles so I dedicated each mile to a family member or friend. To be honest, sometimes I got caught up in the atmosphere and excitement around me with the spectators and would totally forget to see who I was running for that mile and would have to play a little catch up to who I was dedicating that mile to but as the marathon went on and I became more fatigued (physically and mentally) thinking about someone different at each mile was really nice. After the marathon, I sent a photo of myself at the finish line in a little note to each friend or relative to let them know which mile was dedicated to them and a funny little memory or something that popped into my mind during that mile and how grateful I am to have them in my life. In this busy life, we don’t express how we feel about those special people in our lives often enough and this was a great opportunity. I got some nice notes back…especially from some of my elderly aunts who were happy to be remembered and appreciated. The last .2 was dedicated to myself and that last .2 was so sweet!

When I ran my first half, I dedicated each mile to someone important in my life! (http://runlikeag.blogspot.com/2013/05/131-miles-of-dedication.html)
When I was feeling defeated during a mile, I just thought of that person or group of people and I ran for them!!! It was very positive and helpful during the half!

Reply

Three times per week-and I’ll be forever grateful to you because it is thanks to YOU if I discovered dry shampoo!!!

Laughing Cow cheese pairs so nicely with so many things but i suppose so does peanut butter and I eat that straight up so your sister is off the hook!

I tried the dedication thing and started writing down all the names on a paper bracelet and then it got complicated and i gave up but I ALWAYS think of my late hubby and how he would have laughed that I became a runner after he died. He didn’t get the concept of running unless it was to catch a bus. LOL! When I did the RnR NoLa 1/2 a couple years ago it was right after a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had just had a baby and was 35 and it really overwhelmed me. So I ran with her in my mind the entire time. (she’s in remission and her baby just turned 2 =)

I could eat at Panera Bread every day.

Wash my hair 2-3 times a week. Naturally curly girl so conditioner is way more important. That is a daily ritual or my hair is a nest of gnarls.

I feel like eating soft cheese on its own is weird. But I love laughing cow on other things – wheat thin, pepperoni and laughing cow cheese is one of my favorite snacks. I make little sandwiches out of them.

I haven’t done the dedication thing, but for my first 50k, I actually had people write me messages – funny stories, a joke, inspirational quotes, just a quick “hello”…whatever they wanted to write. Then my boyfriend printed them all out for me and cut/folded them separately so that I could open one whenever I needed a little pick me up along my run. It worked so magnificently!

Reply

I eat the wedges on their own as well. It was a Costco sale this month, so I bought two packs (of 4). It’s heaven to get home from work and pop one in my mouth. In fact, I brought two of them with my lunch today. So yummy! (Plus, I have celiac, so crackers are out for me – gluten free ones are icky.)

Reply

I love that mile dedication idea! I have my first race coming up in December, granted its only a 5k but I still might do that.

I eat at Beyond Bread quite a bit but only on Wednesdays to get the most delicious sandwich ever…,grilled chicken and red peppers on a pretzel bun!

Reply

I think I used to eat the cheese wedges as a little girl by myself. I’d probably still do it now, too. At work we eat at subway a fair amount which I love and I’m not sure where our new restaurant will be – before when my husband and I lived downtown it was a bar called Murphy’s of all places, but he loved the fish and chips and I love the salad! I suppose I wash my hair every other day(ish) – in the summer more often in the winter, but I’m one of those gross people that will go to work with sweaty hair in a bun or something – oh well!

Love the idea of dedicating miles~ I’ll have to maybe try that in NYC.

Reply

I totally eat those wedges on their own.

So, I’ve never dedicated mileage, but it’s a really good and motivating idea! I have gone through hard runs imagining a fast friend was running with me and I needed to keep on pace!

Reply

Um my vote is that’s a little weird. haha But I do love cheese so I can’t judge too much.

I wash my hair every other day. So that’s about 3 times a week.

Love Parenthood!!! Soo good!

Reply

Not gonna lie–eating those cheese wedges by themselves is pretty weird…I MUST eat them with something, ya know?! But more power to your sista!

I love the idea of dedicating those miles.

And yah, if my dad said that daily, I’d be eating subway daily too! :)

Reply

I wash my hair probably 2 times a week. In summer a bit more from sweating so much while running lol…I would have to say I eat at The Cheesecake Factory the most, followed by Red Mango. I am a total creature of habit.

I dedicated my last half to my neighbor, Dean Bullock, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last year, but is still training for the Kona Ironman! He is amazing. Check out his awesome story here:

and root for him in Kona on Oct. 12!!!!

I love the idea of dedicating miles to special people! I’ve never done it before, but I think I will for my upcoming race- I’m doing my first half-marathon in November, and I feel like I’ll need all the help I can get!

Does my kitchen count? I honestly can’t remember the last time I ate out… Oh, and the cheese thing? Weird.

My hair usually gets washed 2 or 3 times a week. Thank goodness for having curly hair! A little mist from a spray bottle, and I’m good to go, since it never gets oily. :)

Reply

I eat thos wedges solo, totes normalz!

I laughed at your dad and subway, of course ou have to say YES, I couldn’t say no it’s impossible. All good with aaalllll the salad ;-)

When I ran my first half marathon a couple months ago I dedicated the race to Boston (my race was a month after the Boston Marathon) and I also dedicated it to my great uncle (he had recently lost his battle with cancer). I’m training for my first marathon and I really like the idea of dedicating each mile to an important person in my life. I’m excited to make my list of people!

I go crazy for this panini place by my house… Skimmers.

I wash my hair about 5 times a week… I have really curly/ frizzy/ unruly hair and it’s necessary to wash it so I can put product in it in order to keep my hair somewhat tame.

Reply

Brooke is so cute. My little boy is about 2 months younger than her, and I get so excited reading your blog and thinking about all the fun stuff he’ll be able to do in two months.

I eat laughing cow cheese straight. The other flavors are good too.

I only wash my hair about twice a week because it’s thick and curly, and it gets dried out if I wash it more than that.

Reply

I wash my hair every single day. It’s so greasy and fine. I don’t really eat sandwiches because I don’t eat meat, but I used to love BLTs with avocado.

Reply

I LOVE that idea! I’m totally going to do that for my half marathon. How meaningful!
Those cheese wedges are awesome, but I eat them with something. Too creamy by themselves!

Reply

I’ve been raising money for diabetes research since my mom passed away from the disease in 2011. I’ve run 2 Boston Marathons in her honor, so lots of miles get dedicated to her, it’s a great way to push through when things get tough!

Just been reading the replies….any men reading this out there? It’s like being in the Oprah audience…all women :)

I wash my hair 6-7 times a week – every time I shower. Some Saturdays, since I can’t run, I just stay in pj’s until Sunday morning, then I shower for church

hi!

In training for my half marathon, I dedicate my miles to a little girl in Wisconsin. I got paired up with her through I run 4 (http://www.whoirun4.com/) and now thats who I run for everytime. Of course I have others in mind but it makes her feel special that someone is out there thinking of her daily! Check it out!! :)

I do really like the idea of each mile of race day to be dedicated to a different person each mile. Fun stuff!

PS- Brooke, seriously. Cutest little gal on this planet.

Janae – When I ran my first Nyc marathon in 2010 I got 5 different colors ribbon – cut out 26 pieces and wrote the names on it….each color was for something different …red for my family who I love – had my hubby / daughters/ parents name on it…yellow for friends who have supported me during my hard times…green for the special people who have passed away..orange for people who I have met and made an impact in my life ….I put a key ring around it and put it on my watch….everytime I needed a boost I would look at the names and why I was running. Definitely helped me and put my marathon on a different perspective for me. I still dedicate miles to whoever I feel needs an extra umph or whom I feel has given me a boost. I still have the ribbons and to me it holds a special power of it getting me through my marathon.

-I’ve never thought about dedicating miles of a race to people but I absolutely love that idea, pretty sure I’m going to try it in my half in October.
-I wash my hair every day…since I cut it so short, it just doesn’t stay nice longer than that!

Reply

I love the dedicating miles idea! I’m going to try it for my first ever 1/2 next month!

I wash my hair daily during the week and the least amount possible on the weekends.

By the way, Brooke’s little tummy peaking out made my day – she really is just the cutest thing every! And I love seeing those shoes, she’s such a fashionista! :)

Totally weird to eat those wedges by themselves. I’ve had to do it out of desperation, and it was disgusting.

I dedicated every mile to someone special for my first marathon. It helped the miles go by faster, but with all the emotions of a first marathon, I had to fight back tears when I thought of people who were particularly special (like my children). It can be really difficult to run and cry, and I was worried about getting photographed with an “ugly cry” expression. I would dedicate the really special peeps early on when the emotions are a little less raw.

When i ran my first Marathon I wrote “Boston=Bob” on my hand and its what got me through those last miles when i hit a major wall. My step-dad (bob) joked that he would go to Boston with me if i qualified- being my first marathon, no one thought i would….I ended up qualifying last year and was on track to go until i got a stress fracture. Miracle in disguise. Anytime i doubt myself or capabilities, i remind myself of that phrase. If i could BQ on my first marathon, i can do whatever is on my plate. A family friend also passed away the week before my 20 mile training run, i dedicated those miles to him~

I wash my hair 5 days a week on the days I run and work. On Sat. and Sun. when I run the longest but don;t work, I sport the ponytail.
I have never dedicated a race or miles to anyone but I this the So. Jordan marathon i am running next month is a good place to start! I have so many people to be thankful for at getting me this far in running!
My all time favorite place to eat is Cafe Rio especially after a long weekend run. I will munch on it all day and into the evening on those days. I always get a salad pork or shredded chicken without the tortilla which shaves off 400 calories and the salad is just as good without it and healthier, just ask for extra beans and rice!
I also love going to Maverick (you are in Utah so you know) and getting frozen yogurt from their self serve machine. Low in calories and fat free plus its cheap. It tastes wonderful and usually has 4 flavors to mix or choose from!

Reply

That’s the only way I eat those. So good!

Reply

I only eat Laughing Cow by itself too! I could eat at Subway every day, but unfortunately I don’t. Panera too! I wash my hair EVERY day or it gets super greasy. :/

Reply

I’m with you on Subway. I eat it at least weekly!

Reply

What’s your secret to only washing your hair 2-3 times a week with all of the running you do? Mine stinks to after my run. Please share your secret!

Reply

I’ve never dedicated my miles to anyone, but I like the idea! Would be great to focus on something else rather than just checking off the miles! :)
I LOVE Parenthood and can’t wait until Thursday night! The bad thing is it comes on at 10 our time, which is passed my bedtime! ;)
I normally wash my hair everyday, especially when I run. I sweat like crazy, even this morning when it was 44 degrees! So, there’s no way I could go without washing my hair.
I would say it’s a three-way tie between Culver’s, Moe’s, and Subway for our most frequented eateries!

Reply

I totally eat Laughing Cow wedges by themselves, delicious.

Also I was actually just thinking about the concept of dedicating miles during my run today, so it was kind of funny to see this pop up in my reader. I’ve never done it before, but I was thinking about doing it for the last 6 miles of my upcoming marathon. That’s always the point where I begin to mentally question myself, so if I had something awesome to think about instead, I think it could help!

Reply

I wash my hair daily.

Reply

I’ve heard of this idea and I love it! I bet it makes the race go by faster too! I’ve never eaten those cheese wedges on anything. that should change. Last night on my sub (I have gotten Subway every night this week- $5 footlong!) I had a huge piece of hard turkey. I’m mad at them now. It was so nasty. Also nasty is the amount of times I wash my hair a week,,, probably 2 :)

Reply

I always dedicate a couple miles of any race to my mom.

I honestly probably eat at Panera Bread more than anywhere else… Besides my work cafe almost every day.

I wash my hair once a week. I have it down to a science. I should probably do it every 5-6 days but if I’m not doing anything or seeing anyone on a Sunday or something, why bother ? I also go through a bottle of dry shampoo a week or two weeks. My hair was falling out & thinning until I stopped washing so much!

Reply

Please please tell me how you and all these runner commenters only wash your hair 2-3 times a week (or some said once a week)!!! I wash mine everyday after running. I am so confused. Do you just get it wet in the shower but don’t wash it? Do you leave it up when you shower? The sweat doesn’t bother you? Not trying to be rude or anything, I just want to understand so I can try it, too :) I have never heard of so many people doing this, especially people who work out everyday!!

Reply

I put it up and use a shower cap when in the shower. And I can’t live without dry shampoo!

Reply

My boyfriend eats the wedges on their own, and I think it’s weird too! I always eat them on something

Reply

I usually eat those wedges on crackers or something at least!

Reply

I ran my first marathon this past April and I dedicated the miles to my family- I have 26 immediate family members (parents, siblings, their spouses and my nieces and nephews) so I dedicated a mile to each one. It was amazing and really inspiring, but also emotional! :)

OH man….memories…. I dedicated my last running challenge last year of 7 half marathons in 7 days (back to back) to a guy that dared me to do it because he didn’t believe I had already done 17 halves back-to-back (4 in row, then got injured; then tried again, doing 13 13.1’s and completed them.) I didn’t know this guy at the time of the others, so I told him I’d do them to prove that I could (I don’t run registered races, never have). Well, I did them, PR’d all but the first one and then by my last one, he just stopped talking to me because he was a SUPER jerk (like, completely disappeared out of my life). I like to think it was because he was embarrassed because he didn’t really think I could the 7 halves (being a girl, I guess, who’s never ran a race). Oh well. Glad I did them anyways – made me stronger – and put my half marathons consecutively to 24 in a row. I guess looking back, I did them for myself and my love of running, but to be honest, sometimes, guys are just jerks. After that, I’ve learned to always run for myself, but dedicate them to someone who deserves it :)
