How I fuel for a tempo run and last week’s running recap.

My mother did something extremely kind.  She made her homemade lasagna last night for Bangs.  As you know, this is my favorite food in the entire world.

Yes, we did plan our matching outfits.  Actually, I just wear that jacket everyday of my life so she copied me.

Here is her recipe (in case you want to make yourself and other people in your life extremely happy):

And Mer (grandma) brought the most delicious fruit like usual.

First round of many lasagna plates for me.   I have a hard tempo run this morning so I really need lots of lasagna fuel last night to push me through it.

Since Bangs Friend knows how important dessert is to me she made her famous Chocolate Baklava.  She says it’s ‘easy’ to make but I watched her make it and it was intense.

My family could not get enough.  They have all been trying to convince her (and her husband) to move out to Utah because they really like her.

This is the only dessert that I love that has nuts in it:

Just because:

And we followed dessert with a massage train.  Poor Bangs Friend… She had Brooke behind her and Brooke hasn’t quite mastered how to give a good massage yet.

26.2 miles in 2 hours 3 minutes and 32 seconds.  Simply amazing.  Can you even imagine? That’s like running a marathon in the time it takes to watch one movie?!?

What was your best run last week?  What made it so great?

Do you have a jacket/shirt/article of clothing that you wear constantly because it is so comfortable?!

What was your Sunday night dinner?

Do you eat the best part of the meal first or last?

-For example I eat every last bite of food except for the lasagna (the best part) first and eat that last.  Save the best for last.

Definitely eat the best part of the meal last! Then you can finish and enjoy the taste without any other rubbish getting in the way.

I am taking an easy week from running due to injury, but last week I did manage a 4k run when I was on holiday. I was running in Turkey by the Aegean sea. It was gorgeous, and even distracted me from my knee pain a little ;)

Our Sunday dinner is a roast dinner. It’s the UK’s classic Sunday meal.

I always save the best for last! Sunday night I made sweet potato and red pepper soup iwth white cheddar beer bread. It was sooooo tasty! My runs were pretty eh last week so I am hoping to get in some good miles this week to make up for it.

Reply

I always try to save one bite of the best thing for last! My best run was my long run Saturday – perfect weather and feeling strong. Best combo!

So glad you and Bangs are having a great time! Enjoyyyy the rest of her visit!

The picture of your sis and Brooke is SO precious!

My best run last week was yesterday – I set a new 5k PR with a 7:37 pace! It was also awesome because it benefited cancer research and I ran it with my best friend who is a cancer survivor. And she PRed too!

Oh my goodness, the lasagna & the chocolate baklava both look sooooo good! What a lucky girl you are :)

Reply

Yummmm you are making me so excited for my moms homemade Mac and cheese in 10 days. I seriously can’t wait. I’m glad you had such a great time with bangs friend. You know it’s a true friendship when they bake you good desserts and you match Each other without really trying.

Sounds like you had a great weekend! That baklava looks aaaaaamazing.

My Sunday night dinner was bratwurst with peppers and onions. YUM!

Reply

I don’t think I drove that many miles last week!! :) Love that color on Ms. B!

Reply

I have never had chocolate baklava but that looks so delicious! Glad you and Bangs friend had a fabulous weekend together :)

Yay for Bangs Friend – I’ve missed seeing her on the blog! And that chocolate Baklava looks amazing. I love a good homemade lasagna, it’s my favorite dish that my mom makes too. I’ve never seen it made with mozz though, that sounds yummy.

My favorite run this weekend was with my sister. The only negative was my son Evan started crying in the stroller the last mile.

My Sunday dinner was homemade chicken soup, but I got distracted and Evan was tired so I didn’t finish until 8:30pm. Whoops! And I do the same as you – finish everything else and eat my favorite thing last.

Have a great week!

My best run was probably my 7 miler on Friday. I felt great the whole time.

I had lentil soup my mom made for dinner last night. It’s pretty great having your mom live 4 miles down the road.

Reply

I always save my favorite food for last! I think its because growing up my parents made me clean my whole plate, so I figured I would have to eat it all anyway I might as well get the stuff I didn’t like out of the way and would still have something good to look forward to.
Awesome training last week!!

I have several pieces of clothing that I rotate between. I have a couple pairs of sweats that I have had for nearly 10 years that I still wear, they’re super comfy. I had a burger and fries from 5 guys for dinner last night. I totally eat the best part last, but usually regret that decision because I’m almost always too stuffed to really enjoy the best part.

Reply

I will definitely have to make that lasagna for dinner one night! Hope you and bangs have a great time during her visit:)

Reply

I ran a hilly 20 miler on Saturday it was awesome! No aches or pain during or after. Yay for progress

I’m in major food envy right now!
I was floored when I saw the pace of the new marathon record. I can’t even run one km that fast!
My best run last week was on Friday morning in vancouver. We were there on holidays and ran on the seawall around Stanley park in a light mist. Amazing!

Reply

Mom food is always the best food! I always eat the best part of the meal last! Best run I had last week was probably my race!

That lasagna makes my mouth water!!

I am all for eating the best part of the meal last. It’s the only way to do it.
It looks like you and Bangs friend are really enjoying your time together. Looks like a bunch of fun.
And I adore the photo of Brooke and your Sister. Too cute.

I definitely save the best for last!

I’m glad you had such an awesome time with Bangs friend!

My grey university hoodie and I have been friends for a long time. It is not longer soft and some of the elastic is starting to go, but it is so, so good. I think I need to make lasagna tonight! Problem is my boy is Italian and has specific ways that he thinks lasagna needs to be made.

Reply

I have a concert t shirt that I always wear to cheer me up. I also love my lululemon studio pants. I could live in those.

Reply

My best run was yesterday. It was a trail run with my dog. It just felt good. The weather was cooler, the sun was setting, there was a hot air balloon floating over the lake, dog didn’t trip me, passed a few other people on the trail. Perfection.
I have a pair of super comfy shorts that I love wearing, but I tend to only wear them at home.

Reply

Probably a stupid question, but which marathon are you training for?

Reply

Not a stupid question at all! CIM in December! Have an awesome day!

Reply

I totally eat the best part of the meal last! And my best run last week was 3 miles on the treadmill because I got to incorporate a little speedwork! My worst was Saturday’s “long” run… I was going for 5 but I barely managed to push myself to 3. It was so not my day.

Reply

I have a sweatshirt from middle school that I still wear. Thankfully I had the foresight to buy an XL back then, so it’s nice and cozy. It never leave the house though.

Reply

I have my old high school track jacket. It is so comfy!!! I always save the best part of my dinner for last!! Last Tuesday’s run was the best. It was a HIIT run, and I pushed myself harder than I had in any other run, so that felt good :)

Reply

That desert looks amazing and I think that recipe needs to be shared on the blog :)

I did no running this weekend unfortunately :( Makes me sad but until this little femoral stress fracture heels there will be no running for me. *sniffle*

I had shrimp with onions, peppers, and broccoli for dinner Sunday. It was pretty delicious! Oh yes, and then a cinnamon swirl cake may have been made which I had a little TOO much of! Oh well, that’s what weekends are for right?

Reply

I’ve never tried baklava but it looks good! What is it similar to? Good luck on the tempo this morning!!

Reply

I hate nuts in dessert too! I used to save the peanut butter cup from the peanut butter cup sundae from Friendly’s for last…Oh, and I used to save the yummy frosting tops of cupcakes for last by eating the cake part first.

Reply

I have a black scuba hoodie from Lulu that I basically live in because it’s so comfortable — why mess with a good thing? ;) And saving the best part for last is the only way to go — Gotta end things on a high note!

Reply

I haven’t run since last Tuesday because of some pain in my leg. It’s making me crazy and I have a 15k this weekend. I’m hitting up the gym today to use a 5-day pass and then I’m joining so I have other cardio options to allow my leg to stop hurting. My sister-in-law just ran the Berlin Marathon as her first marathon yesterday. She ran a 4:41. At least she can say she ran the same marathon as the world record. :) Have a great Monday!

Reply

The best part of the meal is always last… it’s called dessert ;)

Reply

Best part of the meal is saved for last for sure. UNLESS I’m afraid it’ll get cold… Then I may eat it first just because I hate cold food when it’s supposed to be hot. :)

Glad you and Bangs are having a great time together!

Reply

My best run was either Friday (speed) or my longest run yet on Saturday. It was great because my pace was faster than I expected and I didn’t die.

The second I walk in the door, I put on my yoga pants.

Sunday night dinner was our family bbq/hang out night :) I had a veggie pizza and roasted asparagus/mushroom/brussel sprout mix.

I always save the best part of my meal for last :)

Reply

Your blog has inspired me to run again thanks!!! I’ve been away from marathon training for almost 9year… this time my focus will be for fun & stress reliever. your Mom’s lasagna looks amazing…… easier than my italian grandmothers lasagna
P.S love your sisters… i would fly out from Canada to have it coloured the same!!!
My hairdresser is no longer in business i do miss my highlights!! ;)
If your ever in the canadian region lemme know we can eat frozen yogurt while watching two of our awsome marathons here in TO.

Reply

I always save the best part of my meal for the end :) I don’t even remember the last time I had lasagna and it sounds really good! It’s one of those foods that I’m intimidated to make haha

Reply

I did my first 20 miler this weekend! By myself! It was such a great feeling. Ready to rock this marathon! Glad you and bangs friend are having fun and eating good!

Reply

That recipe looks delicious! Maybe I’ll have to try it next time I have to carbo-load ;) Nice week of running! I’m jealous…I had to take a few days off last week due to some pain :( But hopefully this week is great!

Reply

That lasagna looks amazing! I eat a little bit of everything at a time, unless there’s something I just want to get out of the way, then I eat it first :)
During the winter, I have a pair of swishy sweats I wear ALL the time!

Reply

Words cannot express how much I love that you call your Grandma “Mer.” That is actually a sound that my old roommate and I make whenever we think something is extra sweet and adorable. “Merrrr” Weird? Yes. Kinda cute though? I think yes. And thank you for the “just because” picture. Those are usually the very best. And this one was no exception.

Reply

I love wearing the same oversized sweatshirt in the mornings. And I always mix my food, I know some think its gross but I love it!

Reply

I always save the best for last and have since I was a little kid. I remember being ridiculed for it and even attempts made to STEAL my best thing before I got to it :(

I have a hoodie from Target that I wear all the time. It is cute and flattering and comfortable…triple win.

I really wish I could find gluten-free lasagna noodles. I wonder if they even make them?

Reply

If I’m having a meal that I really like I will absolutely save the best for last. This is disgusting to me now but when I was little and we would have mcdonalds, which we did a lot when I was growing up, I would eat the bun and save the greasy nasty patty with cheese for last.

Reply

my best run last week was definitely my 11 miles on Sunday morning – perfect temperature, ran my new favorite route and I felt really strong. PLUS I saw the most adorable baby prairie dogs.

Also, as soon as I walk in the door at home I switch into my capri yoga pants – they’re definitely my comfort clothes.

Reply

Last night I had a really healthy dinner: Buffalo chicken dip and homemade potato skins. The Pats were on Sunday Night Football so we had to go all out with football food. If that wasn’t healthy enough, I made brownies for dessert.

My best run last week was my last 20 miler before my marathon. It went well and definitely gave me some much needed confidence before the big day.

Reply

that lasagna looks incredible, I’m going to use your mom’s recipe one of these days!

I like Bangs’ necklace, can you ask her where she got it? Its so cute. Looks like you girls had a great weekend!! :)

As for favourite clothing item, I have this oversized pair of Roots warm track pants and I’m obsessed with them. I put them on the minute I get home from anywhere.

I just returned from a weekend in Salt Lake visiting a dear friend who has relocated there. I love your state! So beautiful. And my best recent run was right there with my friend–I’ll be back!

So glad you had some great times with Bangs Friend! It seems like she’s been such a great friend to you :) Lasagna?! Sign me up! Send me some up in Montana! ;)

I miss massage trains! I used to do those as a kid all the time!
My favorite sweatshirt to wear is my brother’s sweatshirt because it’s about 5 sizes too big. Comfort at its finest!

I definitely keep the best food (and bite!) for last. My last bite always has to consistent of every ingredient in the dish!

Holy miles! how do you run 5 days in a row without getting injured?! even after my one long run a week i had a hard time recovering. please share your secrets! lol

Reply

oooh Lasagna!! I needed a recipe to try this week, thank your mom for all of us! Can’t believe you guys shared the awesome recipe! Thanks!!

I’m going to have to try that Lasagna recipe! It sounds delicious!

Great news for Kenya!!!

Lasagne is one of my all time favorite comfort meals.

Reply

Meant to say- chocolate baklava ….wow! Sounds amazing. Love baklava. Has bangs shared her recipe?

Reply

Haha. Yes! I have these HORRIBLE looking, old, ratty pair of Soffee shorts that I wear at home all.the.time. I am pretty sure my boyfriend hates them.

Reply

I know I would love your mom’s lasagna – no ricotta cheese!! The best lasagna I ever tasted was in Rome and that was the difference, so that’s how I make it now! It just so happens to be on my list for dinner tonight!

And that 2:03:23 marathon is crazy!! I’m happy with a 2 hour HALF marathon.

Reply

I think I go half and half with the best part of my meal…eat some of it first because that’s what I’m looking forward to, but save half for the end of the meal so I can end on a good note. ;-)

Reply

I always eat my least favorite part of the meal to my favorite part…and I have to eat the whole section at once. So I’ll eat all of my least favorite, then second favorite, then favorite.

Reply

Hey!!

My friend Danielle (who got me in to your blog) and I ran a half marathon on Sunday (my first, her second)! I’m loving running and am trying to get everyone and their mom in to it, because everyone can become a runner, it just takes the first step.

As for our post-half meal we went to brunch but I didn’t eat much. Sunday evening I had a delicious pulled pork sandwich.

My favorite go to clothing item is the Lulu What the Fluff pullover. Whenever I don’t know what to wear, I just default to a tee shirt and the pullover.

Keep writing because we’ll keep reading!

Huge congrats!!!! Keep me updated with how your running is going!

Mmm, that lasagna looks and sounds awesome!!

Reply

I make sure the best part has a final bite left–but I usually go in rounds from one thing to the next.

NICE job on the running this weeek. You’re amazing!

Reply

Love that picture of Brooke and your sis. So cute!! And I do this thing where I eat one bite of each food in turn, so that at the end, I have a perfect bite of each thing on my plate left. My husband teases me to no end about it, but I’ve always done it! I guess I just like symmetry?

I think I could just fill up on that pineapple :)

You have to eat things in order of when they get cool. For example, the standard fast food: Fries always cool off first so you eat them first, then the burger. Yep, my friends make fun of me because I eat ‘right’! :)

Your method makes perfect sense to me!

I have a t-shirt that is my favorite.

Everything looks so yummy!
And I like to eat the best part of my meal at the end (like the best piece of a certain baked good, a dessert with a cluster of yummy things in it, a piece of meat with a bunch of seasonings, etc.).

Reply

I always save the best for last! Even on a sandwich, I make sure that my last bite has some tomato, lettuce, and everything in that one bite!

I have a favorite pair of yoga pants that I wear all winter long! Love your jacket!

Reply

Best run last week was 8.5miles on the treadmill. I was just going to do 3.5, but then I thought, “Well, as long as I’m here, I’ll do an hour.” I got up to 7mi in an hour and said, “Well, I’ll do one more bonus mile.” ….and then I walked a half mile to cool down. It’s always great when your body WANTS to do more. :)

During the winters, I’ll usually change into a pair of sweatpants when I’m home from work……cozy! :)

Sunday night dinner was baked chicken drumsticks, broccoli, cantelope, and strawberries with cool whip.

I save the best for last! For example, if I’m eating a salad with deliciously grilled chicken, I’ll eat all the greens first and save chicken for the last bite. :)

I had Chinese Sunday night! SO good! I also had a great run on Friday. 6 miles. I ran on our Greenway here in Georgia. It was so peaceful and I saw a deer! Good times!

Love your blog! Thanks for all the inspiration as I continue to increase my mileage! Maybe one day I’ll be running 50+ per week too!

Lasagna and homemade chocolate baklava? YUM! Hope your tempo run went well. I had a track workout this morning and my legs were still beat from Friday’s 20-miler.

My best run last week was a gorgeous trail run that overlooked the Golden Gate Bridge and the rest of SF. It was amazing! I feel so grateful to live in the bay area.

Reply

Hey Bangs! That dessert looks to-die-for. The lasagna as well. Tell Bangs to come visit me in beautiful British Columbia and I will pay her $$$ to chef it up for me!

I wear the same three outfits on rotation and they are all Lululemon. That is going to be tough when I go back to teaching in January after a year of maternity leave. Although Wunder Under pants look pretty classy with some type of boot if I don’t say so myself.

Have a fabulous day, Bangs, Janae and Brookers!

Reply

I save the best part of the plate for last too! And I definitely would if it was that lasagna!!

Reply

I had curried pumpkin apple soup and a turkey, brie, and blueberry jam open-faced sandwich on cinnamon raisin Ezikel bread for dinner… so fall!

Thanks for sharing the world-breaking marathon time… I had no idea! I can barely run a half in under that time!

Reply

I eat all of my favourite food first except for one bite so I can enjoy it before being too full! Then have the last bite last

Reply

Sunday night dessert was single serving PB and chocolate chip cookies. AMAZING — I’m posting the recipe later!

Reply

I ALWAYS eat the best thing last. I’m also very particular about combining different foods in bites – some foods taste good combined, but others have to be by themselves! So silly :). And I have a pair of black yoga pants that I hardly ever take off when I’m at home!

Reply

My best run was my first one outside last week. I thought I wasn’t going to make it. I was nervous about those hills, but I did it and I felt strong. I always save the best part of the meal for last.

Reply

I wear my Nike tempos all the time. And everywhere. Probably to places where they really aren’t acceptable, but they’re just so darn comfy! Also, I definitely save the best part of the meal for last.

Reply

My grandma also makes the best lasagna in the world. I think we might have to make them both and try them together! I eat everything together. For example.. I had spaghetti last night. So I mixed the spaghetti with the salad. It’s the best.
