Go to the track and do workouts that scare you

The blog is still having a few little problems but they should all be worked out by the end of the day! Thanks for sticking with me, my brother is sure working hard getting everything working like magic. I also don’t know why there are all of the sudden more ads, something we are also trying to take care of ASAP!

Thursday is now ‘go to the track and do workouts that scare you’ day.

Why is the track so intimidating to me?

Here was the workout:

Dynamic warm up and drills followed by 1.5 mile warm up – 8:00 minute pace

400 @ 1:25 – 2 minute walking recovery

400 @ 1:25 – 2 minute walking recovery

800 @ 2:45 – 2:30 walking recovery

800 @ 2:45 – 3:30 walking recovery

400 @ 1:25 – 2:30 walking recovery

800 @ 2:45 – 3:00 walking recovery

400 @ 1:25 – 2:00 walking recovery

400 @ 1:25 – 2:00 walking recovery

1.5 mile cool down opposite direction on track 8+ pace

I hit all of the splits except for those darn 800 meter ones (.5 miles)….those were more like 2:52s so I was about 7 seconds off on those ones but that is okay because I did this same workout 2 weeks ago and yesterday I felt a MILLION times stronger and not nearly as dead as I did last time. Another reason we love running = feeling/seeing improvement.

Remember when I went to St. George a few months ago for a race? Well, that race brought me some really good friends. PS Brooke broke that necklace she was playing with just an hour or two later, no necklace is safe around her.

We went to a place called Awful Waffle and we had fries and a crepe. I only took a picture of the fries because after tasting them I forgot all about my camera because all I was thinking about were the fries but the pesto chicken crepe was also amazing. I can’t wait to take my mom and sister here.

Fast forward 6 hours and I picked up my nieces and nephew to babysit and I had another incredibly healthy meal for the day.

Still trying to figure out why my nephew has such a suspicious face in this picture:

We ate dinner out on the grass and I found out yesterday that Brooke’s new favorite food is pizza.

And just two more pictures of Brooke from the park last night because I think you just need to see them to start your weekend off right.

I am excited for my run this morning because I get to do an easy run with a friend. I hope you are excited for your run today too!

The track is terribly intimidating! I only ever run on the track if I have friends with me and then I don’t wear a watch. Otherwise I do speed work on the roads with my Garmin. Hope you had a fun easy run with your friend!

I LOVE track workouts. I think I was a little hamster in another life ;-) I just did a track workout yesterday in the city that I’m going to share on the blog, and it was such a great workout. It involved both running and squats, jumping jacks etc. Stay tuned. Enjoy your easy run!

Love that picture of Brooke in the grass! So precious. :) I agree with the whole “do workouts that scare you”–that’s what makes us stronger and better.

Reply

Haha I love how the previous commenters talked about track workouts and I am about to talk about french fries! I.love.french fries, and those look so good! Any meal that includes them is better!

Reply

Brooke is so cute! She looks like she’s having so much fun!
No run for me, but I am going to BodyPump today. Have a nice weekend!

Reply

I’m with Brooke, pizza is my favorite too! Although, those fries look pretty delicious also. Seeing improvement in your running is such an awesome feeling…. keep it up!

Reply

I didn’t even realize that Brooke had bottom teeth! That picture of her eating pizza is priceless – she is such an adorable kid :D
You are so speedy – holy cow. I can hit 1:25 twice in 5 repeats, then I’m done. Congrats on the improvement from 2 weeks ago, and don’t even worry about those 7 seconds; they will just melt off the next time you do it :)

Reply

You look gorgeous! Track workouts used to intimidate the heck out of me too. I was so scared of “failing” and not hitting my times. Fortunately, I realized there’s a much greater likelihood of not reaching your goals if you don’t even try ;-) Still praying every day for you friend.

Reply

Janae…you are so positive and uplifting. I have been thinking about you often…keep up those running workouts! Thanks for the pictures of Brooke…made me smile this morning:-)

Reply

The track is kind of fun with a group, but by myself I’d just never do it.
The surface is a nice break for running, though. A good soft track is at least slightly kinder to my joints than pavement!

Reply

Your warm up pace is my my-brain-and-every-organ-in-my-body-might-explode pace. WHEN we run together, you will have to run in circles around me or drag me in a wagon. That photo of Brooker in the swing made my day. What a happy baby (…toddler?!).

Reply

hahahaha brooke’s expression in the swing! pure happiness.

Reply

I have a short run today…but also my first osteopath appointment…I heard there might be slight pain involved. :-(

Reply

You are looking lovely. It is so much easier getting out of bed for an easy run!

Reply

Crazy bread= awesome!!! I used to have it every Friday night when I was younger. I have a long run and actually long runs scare me more than the track…
This one is only 12 miles though…but still.

Reply

I hate the track, so I just never go. Instead I stick to flat roads and paved trails for speed work and limestone and hilly routes for threshold/tempo work. For me this seems to work out better, gets my mind where it needs to be for race day…ready to handle discomfort and solitude on the roads.

The hubby and I are up in Michigan at a beach town, excited to go run her in a few mins and admire the giant houses and beautiful views! Easy running too.

Reply

Aw Brooke! What a beautiful family!!

Reply

I’ve never commented before but wanted to say power to you! You are just taking life head on and your optimistic attitude and gratitude for your daughter is truly wonderful.

Reply

The title of this post alone had me shouting, “Yes!” out loud at Starbucks just now haha. We build up the hard runs so much in our minds when really at the end of the day… yeah they’re going to be hard, that’s why we do them. No, were aren’t going to die.
It always sounds simple right? :)

Reply

That picture of her in the swing is too cute.

Reply

Brooke is THE. CUTEST.

Reply

Man those fries made my mouth water! I am so trying to get off sugar and other white stuff for a few weeks so seeing those just made my heart beat fast! :) Love those pictures of Brooke she is just so adorable!

Reply

She has the best smile! :)
I afraid of trying track/speed running. My side always cramps up (it’s probably dehydration, or weird breathing), so I feel like I’m just going to be slow forever!

Reply

Hello! I AM excited about my run – I am going to do hill reps. I don’t know why I’m so excited.

This weekend is a long weekend in the UK and I am really hoping the sun comes out to say hello… it’ a bit gray at the moment, so keep your fingers crossed!

Hope you have a good weekend.

I love how swings make kiddos SO happy. Such a pure joy :) Great pics! However, now I kind of want fries for breakfast…

Reply

Brooke is so ridiculously cute!! :)

And that track workout sounds intense! I am scared just thinking about it! You go girl!

Reply

Awesome Run Janae! I love 400’s and 800’s. By the way, You are so beautiful! You are just glowing in your pics

Reply

I have a love/hate relationship iwth the track. I love to see the improvements but hate how intimidating it is. I need to conquer my track fear! Also, Brooke seriously makes me smile so much in the morning :)

Reply

I wish I lived near a track and you, I would join you for those crazy workouts!

Reply

Looking at that workout makes me want to vomit. Holy cow. Brooke’s face on the swing is priceless!!

Reply

Brooke is such a happy little one!

Reply

That picture of Brooke in the swing <3 Awwr.

And pesto and chicken waffles with fries?! Never in my wildest would I have thought of a combo like that… My mind always goes to sweet fillings when I think of crepes, but now I seriously want to try a savoury one…

Happy Friday, lady!

Reply

I absolutely love the last picture of Brooke swinging!!! How adorable. Have a great weekend and I can’t wait to hear all about Brooke’s birthday party!!!

Hugs,

Sue

Reply

Great post! I love how you share the exact details of your workout. So helpful and inspiring!

Reply

Awesome workout! I love it when you share you workouts because someday when I get motivated, I am going to do them myself! :)

Reply

Janae, You look gorgeous in those pics! It’s sad Brooke broke the necklace…but you can’t really be upset with a baby as cute as her. Her face in the park pictures is pure happiness-such a great way to start my day :)

Reply

Track workouts are my fave workouts – but that is probably because I used to run track and currently coach sprints/hurdles, so I am very comfortable there. I wish there were more proper tracks around my place – I think we only have one proper mondo covered outdoor track in my city. All the schools have gravel tracks that are not maintained at all

Reply

Brooke’s face on the swing = pure happiness. And your nephew’s expression is funny as well! I definitely was not excited for my run this morning, but I came back and felt a zillion times better…definitely one of the reasons why we love running.

Reply

Those fries looked yummy and that Brooke is so cute. Glad you shared the additional pics… :-)
Have a great weekend!

Reply

Easy runs with friends are always fun :) Aw, how can you not smile after seeing those picture of Brooke, you’re super lucky :)

Reply

Holy moly that baby is cute as can be!

Reply

Track workouts aren’t my favorite either. But one thing I do like about it is that I can literally see the exact distance I have left to go on each split. They’re are exhausting. Good work, lady!
Those pictures of Brooke totally started my weekend off right! And that picture makes me miss our time in St. George!! We need to get together soon :)

Reply

I have a huge grin on my face now after seeing those pictures of Brooke! What a happy girl!

Reply

Janae,

I’m really interested in your workout but I’m also a newbie, so terms and running lingo still allude me.. what exactly do you mean by 400 @ 1:25 and all the others?

Reply

Hey!!! So I mean 400 meters (one time around the track) in 1 minute and 25 seconds. 2 times around the track (800 meters) in 2 minutes and 52 seconds! Does that make sense? Hope you are having a great day!

Reply

I need to be as excited as you are about getting your runs in! This week I have been slacking off. I mean, literally avoiding it. I need to get outside. And then eat pizza outside to reward myself, I love Little Caesars!

Reply

Wow, 400 meters @ 1:25 and 800 meters @ 2:52! Janae, you are unbelievably fast! the fastest 800 I’ve ever done was like 3:50 or 4:00(but I’m pretty slow). I may run a couple of easy miles today but I have strength training mainly on the agenda. I’m going to do a long run with a friend Sunday. Btw, your hair looks really pretty up like that! I’m trying to think of better ways to fix my hair!

Reply

The track always scares me too! but you always feels so amazing when you leave!

Reply

Oh man is that your nephew holding up Brooke in that picture? If so, so sweet! She’s lucky to have them around!

Reply

Great job on the track work! Looks like a fun day!

Reply

The picture of Brooke swinging…making my heart melt. She looks so happy :).

I am jealous of that track workout! It sounds like fun and torture all at the same time!

I’m excited for my run this weekend…a 5k on Sunday evening!

Have a great weekend Janae!

Reply

Your niece and nephew are so cute, his face is hilarious…did he have some pizza in his mouth? Brooke and Izzy would love having lunch together, Izzy asks me almost everyday if we can order pizza lol.

Reply

Brooke really does look so much like your niece!! I hope she has freckles like it appears your niece does, because I love a little freckle face. The picture of her on the swing is priceless! Pure JOY on her face, I hope you frame it :)

Reply

Woot! Great job on your track workout! You are speedy gonzales!

You and little Brooker are so beautiful! Like mother like daughter. ;)

Reply

Brooke in the swing = the most precious thing ever. So cute!

Reply

She is the cutest, sweetest, most precious little girl!! (After Addie of course haha … I love Brooke, but I have to place my own little one first! ;) )

I love how much time you’re getting to spend with your family right now. Such a blessing! <3

Reply

Brooke’s face in the swing is priceless! What a joy! Hope you’re having a good week :)

Reply

That swing picture DID start my weekend off right! ;) great job on that track workout! Haven’t done those since high school and it may stay that way hehe. You’re my running inspiration though HRG! Also, you look gorgeous. Hope you have an uplifting weekend!

Reply

Hahah omg, I love that picture of your nephew!! Too funny!! Hahahah.

Reply

Brooke is pretty smart! Pizza IS the BEST food.

Reply

I haven’t read in a while due to life getting busy but now I think I’m all caught up. I just wanted to say I wish you and Brooke all the best. I’m now less than 8 weeks away from my first baby arriving so I’ll have to read back to your earlier posts about Brooke and getting back into exercise :)

Reply

OH MY GOSH. That picture of Brooke on the swing is one of the cutest pictures I have ever seen! You should definitely frame that!

Reply

How do you manage to get up in the mornings do run so consistently?

Reply

I just know my day will go so much better if I get a run in and early morning is the only time to run because Brooke is still snoozing then:)

Reply

Oh my gosh, Brooke in that swing! So freaking cute.

I ran my long run this morning and was amazed by how much better and stronger I felt this time compared to the past few I’ve done. I love feeling stronger!!!

Reply

Track workouts scare me, but the feeling of success I have after completing them is worth every second. I have grown to love, though still respect, the track.

Crepes, delicious. I need to find a crepe place around here.

Reply

Ahhhhhh that is Amy! I taught with her at the gym in provo! Crazy small world.

I love that pic of brooke in the swing!!

Reply

You can never post too many pictures of Brooke! Have a good weekend!

Reply

I am trying to get the motivation up to go to the track. I really want to work on my speed but haven’t done anything about it yet. I think if I were at a track I would actually push myself because running slowly around a track doesn’t sound like any fun at all. Keep posting about your track workouts, maybe it will inspire me!

Reply

I got track workout as well on Thursdays ;) It’s tough but I love it! Have a lovely weekend!

Reply

My goodness you have a beautiful child! Every weekend starts out right with pictures of babies smiling! Hopefully I get to spend some time with my niece this week who I can’t believe is already over a week old!

Reply

I want some of those french fries, fries are my weakness!
you look absolutely gorgeous in the pic at awful waffle! stay strong lady!

Reply

hi janae! i did a track workout yesterday but now my foot really hurts :( i’m babying it and wearing supportive shoes and hoping it’s not something serious :(

i took a personal day from work to get my life in order! so far it’s working, french toast and some plans to organize my desk space :)

the picture of your nephew with brooke is so great!! i just love it. you can tell he’s such a nice cousin

Reply

Haha, your nephew is awesome. What boy his age wouldn’t love pizza?

Reply

Had a great long run today. So nice to get it in during the morning. It is a beautiful morning out there! I ran a new route on a nearby trail. I’ve run around the local high school track a couple times, but I prefer roads/trails to get my training in. Have a great weekend!!

Reply

You look absolutely amazing! I know you’re going through a lot of stuff right now, but you look beautiful. Keep it up!

Reply

I have never done a track workout before I wouldn’t even know where to begin… I would like to try it someday though I just need someone to kind of show me how it works.

Reply

I love the track, I will have to try this:)

Reply

YUUMMM– and I love Amy!!

Reply

I am as beginning as a beginning runner can be, so I can only say “wow” about your workout instead of relating it to anything in my life…but I do love French fries. :)

Brooke is the cutest, most joyful little ray of sunshine, I’m so glad you’re blessed with her in your life!

Reply

Track workouts are very intimidating to me too. I like to do the rockstar dance when I am finished. :) Great workout and super fast times there, speedy!

Reply

You and Brooke are such beauties!

Reply

Brooke honestly seems like the happiest little cherub baby in the world. She must have a great mama there… ;)

Reply

Thursday track workouts = Check! I am totally there…except I’m not sure I could handle the workout you did. Seriously some awesome stuff Janae, I am super proud of you!

Thanks so much for running with me this morning. I’ve loved every second of our runs this week. Have an amazing weekend! You are Brookers look adorable in all of the pictures and I just really love your face.

Reply

Wow – great job! Even though my pace is a million times slower than yours, I totally relate to the feeling of being “scared” to go to the track … which is probably why I so rarely do it :). I KNOW the benefits of doing track workouts, but I get bummed out with myself if I don’t hit paces I think I “should”, and I just love the pain-free, relaxed, easy runs too much to give them up!

Reply

Go, fast woman! Go!!! Nice work :)

Reply

Awww you’re right: I did need to see those pictures of Brooke to start my weekend off right! :) Adorable!!! I’m going on a fun run later too, and am so excited!

xo

Reply

Sometimes, I find myself really wishing I had a track nearby and I could go out and do speedwork and not worry about oncoming cars or staring at my garmin to figure out distance, oh how lovely it would be! And then I want to smack myself.

Reply

Haha whose favorite food ISN’T pizza is the better question

Reply

Track workouts, your body’s version on beauty sleep? Looking good girl. Absolutely gorgeous in the pizza picture.

Reply

You know you are doing things right when you see Brooke that happy all the time!

Reply

Yes, I’m excited for my run today! I’ll do an easy one, too. I have the Double Road Race tomorrow (10K, half-time break, followed by a 5K).

Reply

Oh my!!! Is that the cutest picture EVER of Brooke swinging or what?!?! She is adorbs!!

Reply

PS – have you heard of Yasso 800s?? If not, I have heard those can be a good indicator of marathon timing – you are going to get your sub 3! :)

Reply

Brooke is starting to look like a little lady and not a baby anymore! So sweet!

Reply

Did I miss the post about a nee camera, your pics are so clear.

Reply

That would be *new* auto correct, you win again.

Reply

My daughter is 14 months old and she loves pizza too! Its almost embarassed to admit how often we eat it.

Reply

Wow, those 800 splits would scare me too!

Reply

Too bad Brooke broke that necklace, it looks so pretty on you! And that track workout would probably scare me too but that’s great that you felt better than last time. I should do a little speed work sometime…

Reply

The cheeks on little Brooke are so cute!! <3

Reply

I just started doing track workouts and have been loving them! P.S. You look so pretty in that picture!!

Reply

Great job on your track workout, I am impressed! I am running 5 today, getting ready for the Haunted Half marathon in SLC in October! I loved your pinata costume at your Halloween half marathon a few years ago :)

Reply

Gah that last picture of Brooke makes me want to squeeze her! too cute.

Reply

I’ve been at the track a lot lately because we practice there for xc. You look really beautiful in that pic! That restaurant sounds amazing :D

Reply

Argh that photo of Brooke on the swing has made my day – you are one lucky lady that you get to cuddle her whenever you want :)

Reply

i could just come cheerlead on the side of the track while you run. and eat waffles, fries, crepes, pizza, and crazy bread.

Reply

I have been nursing a bum foot for the last couple of months but therapy is doing the trick. I am looking forward to hitting the track once the doc give me the okay. Thanks for the inspiration.

Reply

Wow, great track workout, girl! I did Yasso 800’s yesterday (not as fast as your 800’s) and though I was scared at first, so glad I did them! Thanks for sharing many adorable pics….and now I think I have to go find some fries for dinner!!!!!

Reply

Your track workout looks like a lot of fun, but I would be terrified if I had to keep up with those times! FINISHING a hard track workout is one of the best feelings in the world!

I love the picture of Brooke in the swing! She’s such a cutie!

Reply

I was having a bad day but your pictures of Brooke cheered me up!

Reply

Ugggggg! I was debating on weather or not to Dona track workout today and was leaning towards just taking a nap. Then I saw your post. Shoot, I guess I’m headed to the track.

Nap time sounded so much better.

Reply

Why, oh why can’t Awful Waffle be up in my neck of the woods? I love french fries (and running to burn them off)! On another note, your speed and strength on the track is truly inspiring!

Reply

3 things:

awesome workout Janae- i wish i had the motivation for a track workout.

Your nephew looks JUST LIKE YOU in that picture… and man am I craving little caesars pizza now- haven’t had that since I was a kid.

Brooke on the swing- beyond adorable.. what a happy baby :)

Reply

Track workouts are so scary – I get anxiety just thinking about it! I tried to do one earlier this week that didn’t go as planned, but adjusted accordingly…it’s definitely nice to have someone to do it with. Track workouts alone are even scarier!!

Reply

The last two pictures of brooke are so gorgeous!!!!

Reply

I want/need some crazy bread now! Too bad we have no little Caesars!
I am definitely excited for my run tomorrow!

Reply

Wow–did your coach explain why the 800s are to be at a faster pace than the 400s? Just curious about that!!

I think I am a little burnt out right now…Ive been trying to train for a marathon for almost 2 months and I think my “training threshold” is closer to 1 month lol. So I am not sure whether I will be running for a little while–till I get over this burnt out feeling and ready to enjoy running again!

Reply

I was curious about that too…. I will ask him!

Reply

Thanks!! I am always curious about why certain workouts are the way they are and that one was not intuitive to me.

Reply

Is B eating all ‘big people’ food now?

Reply

Yes!!! She grew up way too fast!

Reply

:)

Reply

Brooke has fabulous taste! And, I adore the picture of her on the swing.

Reply

I’m glad I’m not the only one here who’s feeling intimidated on tracks. :)
Brooke’s smile makes my heart melt… she’s the cutest! :)

Reply

Those fries look yum! I love having different condiments for my fries than just the normal ketchup.
Brooke is absolutely gorgeous. She always looks so happy.

Reply

Very energetic blog, I enjoyed that bit. Will there be a part 2?
