6 hour flight and my Dad has lost 50 lbs!

Riddle:  How long does it take to get from San Jose, California to Salt Lake City, Utah via airplane?

Answer:  6 hours:)  We will forgive you Southwest for making us wait on the runway for a year or so, I guess there was bad weather or something silly like that that they didn’t want to fly through.

At least I packed 3 days worth of food for Brooke.  She was just kicking back with her feet up on the tray eating her cut up grapes.

IMG 0391

I managed to remember Brooke’s food but somehow forgot to pack mine so I grabbed a burrito at the airport.  This may look like an ordinary burrito but it was not.  I will now only fly out of the San Jose airport so that I can get one of these each time I go.  It had chicken, bbq sauce, so much guacamole I thought they were going to charge me extra, salsa and lettuce.

I had the apple later on when I got hungry again and I have come to realize that apples somehow make me hungrier than I was before I ate the apple.  They also always get stuck in my permanent bottom retainer (I am sure you really wanted to know that).

IMG 0387

We scored an entire row of seats to ourselves.  It is going to be a very sad day when Brooke turns 2 and I have to pay for her plane ticket.

IMG 0396

Once Brooke fell asleep I brought out a book that I stole from my cousin’s car as she was dropping me off at the airport (I forgot to bring one) and so far I really like it (please note I pretty much love every book/movie/tv show that I read/watch.  I am very easily entertained but so far I am LOVING the main character).

IMG 0401

The best part of the flight was meeting a girl name Katie and her family…she is a runner originally from Utah that moved to California for her husband to go to law school and he now works as a lawyer… we obviously had a few things in common to talk about.

I got home and my dad was waiting there with a fresh bowl of cantaloupe for me.  I have never seen my dad this skinny in my entire life.  He is doing incredible. He has lost 50 lbs in 25 weeks.  It makes me so happy to see him living such a healthy lifestyle!  He walks about 4 miles a day now and tracks everything he eats.  (PS I don’t know why their kitchen looks yellow in this picture, it isn’t)

IMG 0402

They taught me a fancy new corn cooking technique.  Wrap your corn in a paper towel, get it wet and stick it in the microwave for just 4 minutes.  So easy and it tasted amazing, just like if I would have boiled it.

I had mine with a chicken breast and grapes.

Time to get some fartleks done.

What book are you reading right now?  Do you recommend it?

Green grapes or red grapes?

My dad does read the blog (and comments) every day so feel free to tell him congrats:)

Way to go to your dad!! What a major accomplishment!! I’ve experienced the same thing with my mom, so I know how proud you are!

Your dad looks amazing!!! Congrats to him! I also did a fartlek this morning :-) Right now I am reading a book called “When the Servant Becomes the Master.” It’s about the struggle with addiction and is super enlightening! I recommend it!

Reply

I am currently reading Fight Club, but it’s been a very slow start. I don’t have a preference as to the color of grapes, it’s more about them being really crunchy.

Papa Hungry Runner Girl: congrats on your weight loss!! You look great!

Reply

Way to go, Dad! That is FANTASTIC! My father has also lost a significant amount of weight and it’s so awesome to see him slim down when I visit. Green grapes for sure and I totally agree that apples make me hungrier! Have a great trip!

WOOHOO!! Congrats to your dad – he looks ahhhh-mazing!! I think I knew that corn trick but forgot. Thanks for re-reminding me haha

I need a good book to read. Lately I’ve been to computer-screen focused so I need a book to get me off this thing!!

Enjoy your time with your family!! :)

Woooo that’s awesome for your dad! I need to try that corn trick- I’m the laziest person ever when it comes to waiting for food o cook! Meeting interesting people is one of my favorite things about flying I think.

Reply

I’m reading the Game of Thrones books right now. So far I’m on book three and love them!

I’m not sure what my run will be today. I still don’t actually feel like I’m awake, so I’m not sure when I’ll get my run in.

Your dad is doing awesome!!

Reply

Congratulations to your dad! He looks great! I hate the apple in the permanent retainer problem. I greatly dislike corn and ribs for the very same reason! I’m the same with books/movies/shows. I like everything I read or see. I have a nice easy 5k scheduled. Almost went at 6 am since the baby had me up at 5:30 but I managed to fall back to sleep so it’ll be after dinner!

Reply

I have a tempo run on my schedule today with miles 3-6 at marathon pace (obviously, I will do it faster as I always do). I now need to kick it up a notch as I ran a half this past weekend at a 7:55 average and I was chatting the entire way with runners around me. My BQ pace needs to be 8:01….I really think I can blow that out of the water!

Congrat’s Janae’s Dad! You look great!

Easy run today! Just finished “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running” by Haruki Murakami and I loved it.

Congrats Janae’s dad! You look fantastic!

Your dad is doing such a great job! Maybe you will have a new running partner soon?! ;) I am reading Broken Harbour. It gives me nightmares (because I am a wimp) but a great mystery book!

Congrat’s HRG’s Dad! That’s such an accomplishment!

I a, reading Handle With Care by Jodi Piccoult…it’s very good! She always writes about uneasy topics, and I love it.

Green grapes, halved, and thrown in a chicken salad.

CONGRATS to HRG dad!! That is some dedication right there, and your body is so thankful. Don’t let janea talk you into a marathon though…. ;)

I had a 4 mile progression run this morning before work. After work, I’m doing 5 miles. That will be more of a “make it up as I go” type run because it will be a sunny, 90 degrees and 65% humidity kind of afternoon and all plans just kind of go out the window. I’ll try and make it a tempo run, but who knows?

I’m reading A Cuckoo’s Calling- the new J.K. Rowling book that she wrote under the pen-name Robert Gailbreath or something. It’s good so far! I’d recommend every book I read though. Almost. I read 3 James Patterson books this weekend, and I’d recommend those too!

Eww. No grapes. Unless they are frozen and in my daily green smoothies. I don’t like the texture of grapes. Or cherries.

Good job, Janae’s dad!! :) 50 pounds in 25 weeks is DEFINITELY something to be excited/impressed/proud of! :)

Reply

Congrats to your dad! That is so awesome!
I am a green grape girl. And on todays agenda is a tempo run. I did my first run under 9 minutes yesterday! 5 miles at 8:57. I want to keep it under 9 and only go down here there! Soon I will be at a 7. Soon.
P.S. I hope to meet you one day too! not in a creepy way just a runner, bloggy friend way.

Way to go Daddio!! So great!!

Green Grapes all the way!

Have a speed workout planned tonight – fingers crossed that I actually get to do it.

Way to go to your dad! He is such an inspiration of losing weight the healthy way! Could you ask him for some of his tips and post them for us? I know you did that a while back, but now that he is six months in, maybe has some more ideas? Have fun with your family!

Reply

Your father really looks great Janae!! So awesome!! :) :)

Happy that you arrived in UT safe & sound. Brooke really is a tropper! She’s surely earned her wings by now.

Corn is the best right now. You should try it with butter, lemon, garlic salt, parmesan cheese & garlic powder & if you’re feeling a little crazy add tapatio! So good!! :)

Red grapes for me & double-digit run with strides mixed in. luv ya!! xo

Reply

Hooray for your dad! What an awesome accomplishment. I am not running today. Instead, I’m doing a spin class. A good book that I just finished is “The Unlikely Disciple” by Kevin Roose. He was a sophomore at Brown and decided to attend Liberty University (Jerry Falwell’s college) for a semester. Roose is a really great writer!

Reply

Congrats to your dad!! I’m reading “A Constellation of Vital Phenomena,” which is really great, but quite serious. Not my usual summer reading. Given that I also just finished “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” I’m going to opt for something much fluffier and easier to read after this, but it feels good to be reading substantive books in my free time. Normally I do so much reading at work that I don’t want to read when I’m done working for the day, but then that means I’m missing out on great books. I’m trying to change that.

Reply

Yeah for your dad! Sounds like he is losing weight the right way. Always exciting to see!

Today will be a treadmill run for me. I had a trail run scheduled, but younger daughter is sick and I felt bad running without her since she really wanted to go.

Seedless red grapes are the only grapes I buy.

Reply

Hey! Congrats, Janae’s dad! Way to go.
I like both green & red… Green have to look just so, though. Hate those sour batches that come along once in awhile.

Reply

I always think that about apples too! Your dad looks great! Congrats on his weight loss!

Reply

Right now I’m reading Under the Dome by Stephen King. It’s pretty good so far.

Reply

Congrats to your Dad! Has he ever looked into something like Healthywage.com? You pay into it but you can double your money in 6 months if you lose 10% of your weight. I signed up for it a month ago to help lose the rest of the baby weight… I plan on posting about it soon, just haven’t gotten around to it. Just curious – I figure, if you’re going to lose the weight anyway, might as well make some money out of the deal!!

And, red grapes, all the way.

Reply

Another person here who thinks that apples make you hungrier (incidentally, I find porridge to be the same if anything vaguely delicious (e.g. golden syrup) is added to it… I think it’s probably the sugar crash). I’m mainly reading things about books are marketed in translation for my thesis at the moment, but I think there’s a half-finished John Green book somewhere on my Kindle.

Your daughter is SUCH a cutie pie. Although my boyfriend is called Brooke, too (I’m British, and Brooke, for a girl or a boy, is a very unusual name), which confused me a bit at first. :)

And well done, Hungry Runner Girl’s Dad (even if I did have to work out how many stone 50lb is!). Awesome achievement.

Reply

I love every book/tv show/movie I watch too. I would NOT make a good critic! Your dad looks amazing! Congrats!

I just read “Honey, Do You Need A Ride? Confessions of a Fat Runner” by Jennifer Graham. http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/1891369806

The book is incredible, and I guarantee that if you like this blog, you will love this book. Yeah, I’m a dude runner, so not in the primary target for both that book (and this blog) but I still loved it. Review coming from my blog soon.

Reply

Congrats to your dad. My mom just lost 20lbs and my stepdad is around that, too. They are both obsessed with My Fitness Pal (which I use, too).

I’m reading Running Like a Girl about a British girl becoming a runner. It’s funny. So far, I like it. I plan to have a full review later.

Reply

That is SO awesome for your Dad, way to go!!
No run today probably the elliptical for cardio.
Happiest Baby on the Block :) And yes I do!
Either as long as they are seedless.

Reply

apples always make me so much hungrier too! People think I’m crazy when I tell them that – I’m glad I’m not the only one!

Reply

Even EASIER way to cook corn on the cob: Do NOT shuck the corn. Put corn and a glass of water in the microwave. Cook for 3-4 minutes. The water steams the corn and makes the shuck and the silk come off in one piece instead of pulling off all those nasty strings one at a time!

Reply

I am doing an easy run today and I am so happy about it. I do speed on Mon so Tues is always nice to do an easy run knowing I finished Mondays harder one.
I like green and red. I pick depending on which are bigger and better looking :).
50 lbs is AMAZING!!! Congrats to the dad of hungry runner girl!!!!

Awesome job, HRGDad!!

Did 10mi with 8x30second sprints this morning…so fartleks here too!

Congratulations Janae’s Dad! That is awesome! Cantaloupe is one of my favorites along with red seedless grapes and srawberries. I could literally eat strawberries every day. Reading My Life On The Run by Bart Yasso right now and I really like it so far. He’s really am incredible person. No run today still trying to heal this stupid shin/calf injury. Is been two weeks sinc last run and I’m literally going crazy.

Reply

Losing weight is one of the hardest things to do. Your dad is amazing and looks fantastic!

Reply

Ha! I did a fartlek for the first time EVER today! So funny. I don’t like fartleks mostly because I don’t like that name…and I don’t like the randomness of the workout. But, mine was a tempo fartlek, so it was very distance oriented instead of time based, which works for me:) It wasn’t so bad! I hope you had a great workout! And, CONGRATS to your dad – I am in awe of people that have such huge weight loss accomplishments, it’s amazing.

Reply

Wow! Go Dad! I just finished The maze Runner series and am working through Divergent. Both are great. If you like books like The hunger Games you will like these books. They are super easy, fast reads.

Reply

I have a tempo run on the agenda (a 40 minute one) – I really strongly dislike them, I honestly would rather do a track workout, which I missed last week because I was at camp

I’m actually waiting for 2 books to come from the library – both of them are by Dean Karzanes (I know, I butchered his name)

I am a red grapes person all the way – they taste really sweet

Congrats, Janae’s Dad!

Reply

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels hungrier after eating an apple! I like to make apples my morning snack so that when I get hungry one hour later, its lunch time. Oh and I have one of those permanent bottom retainers and I also get apple stuck in it! Such a hard life :)

Your dad looks great!

Reply

Three cheers for your dad! It’s awesome that he’s been able to really commit to a healthy lifestyle and lose all of that weight. I think I prefer red grapes to green grapes and I’m not sure why that is…but I definitely wouldn’t turn down green grapes. I think my official answer to that question would be “whatever’s on sale at the grocery store.” :) Today’s run should be a speed workout, but my legs are super sore from the weekend, so I might go easy today and try the speed intervals tomorrow.

Reply

I just read The American Wife which was really good!! Today I’m going to run 4 miles, still pretty easy because I’m still getting back into the swing of things. I hope your fartleks went well. I’ve never done anything like that, but been curious about them.

Red grapes!!

And CONGRATS to your dad!! He looks great!

I remember plane flights with kids younger than 2 well. We definitely used that advantage as much as we could. One thing we learned the hard way is that the airlines won’t mess around if there is any question how old your kid is. We were asked for proof of our kids’ ages a ton once they got close to 2.

Major props to you dad. It’s always fun to see someone you love go through such a positive transformation!

Your dad looks amazing! Way to go! I love how you have updated us on his progress! So inspiring!

Not reading anything right now except blogs, and yours is one of my favorites.

Congrats to your dad!!!! That’s a huge accomplishment. Usually my speed runs are today, but I won’t have time for it on Thursday, so I switched them, long run for me today :) 11 miles!! 4) I am reading a book called “All the Presidents’ Pastries: 25 years in the White House”….a book about a man’s life who started his career as a pastry chef in France and eventually worked his way into the White House. It is fantastic so far!
5) hard to decide, but I think I’d have to say red grapes!

run today? Easy, just jogging with kids XC team

reading now? “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. Really like it. Good for people working in creative fields but also relevant to anyone trying to make something happen in their life.

Green grapes or red grapes? Both, but only in fermented juice.

I’m glad you made it there eventually, your dad looks great!

Reply

It is most definitely a sad day when your baby turns 2 – for many reasons and plane tickets are one of those reasons.

I am so glad I am not the only person who thinks apples make you MORE hungry. Yet I still eat one almost every day. Maybe apples are to blame for my over eating ;)

Your dad looks fantastic and that is so awesome. Congrats!

I hope your run at altitude went well this morning. It actually isn’t too humid out this morning, so that is good. It has been so gross lately. No run for me today. I did body pump and the stairs.

Reply

Congrats to your dad! I’m going to forward this to my dad, so he feels so peer pressure to start walking & tracking his food. Isn’t infant-in-arms great, especially when you snag an extra seat? We’re planning a big trip before our youngest turns two next spring so we can take advantage of infant-in-arms. Fingers crossed we can get some extra seats on our upcoming trip in August!

SO happy for your dad!! When my dad hit 60 a few years ago he did the same thing and still uses the elliptical and lifts weight 5 – 6 days a week! He uses his cardio time to catch up on TV shows in the basement. He is definitely living up this part of his retirement and looks great!! My parents also just got bikes and bike all the time now. Apparently since my parents got married (26 years ago) my mom has packed on about a lb a year and so she is doing something about it to and already lost 10+ lbs! I can’t wait to see her next week!

Congrats to your dad on changing his lifestyle! It’s a hard thing to do!

Green grapes, but only when they are chilled.

Wow, that’s amazing and commendable. Way to go Dad! 4miles is quite the distance for anyone, of any age, of any fitness level. I hope there’s still time to enjoy life with a few treats, while getting used to the new you!

That’s a smart way to cook your corn. We do it kind if the same way just don’t take the husk off and microwave it for 3 min husk it rinse and enjoy

I read that book too! It is a really good one. I like how it is set in a slightly different time period. I think it makes it more interesting. I just finished The Engagements and it was so good! I am a huge fan of the author anyways, and she did an excellent job on this one.

Congrats to your Dad!
