Wednesday Weirdness

4 mile easy run this morning!

Time for some Wednesday Weirdness (the only title that I could come up with.  Just forgive me and forget about this one asap)

Tonight I get to talk to some teen girls about exercise and fitness.  I definitely miss teaching high school health sometimes so this is bound to be fun.  I am bringing my Sister’s Healthy Banana Blueberry Muffins for them to try out.

Two words:  Impulse buy.  They just looked too fun to not buy.

Did anyone else ever have a topsy tail?

Conair topsy tail 5 pc kit 350x350

I do little mini topsy tails on Brooke every morning so daily I am reminded of my growing up years when my mom would use the topsy tail on me…. my goal is to see how many generations we can keep this hairstyle going.

Target stole my money.  Any guesses on what I will be making soon?

I finally got to hang out with Bangs Friend.   It had been 8 days since I saw her so we finally were able to catch up over lunch.  If anyone wants to send me Subway gift cards feel free to because I only have enough money left for one more sandwich on mine.  I will be going through serious withdrawals.

And some more of the awesome Worst Running Outfit pictures:

From Stacy:

I’m on the right; in the Yellow.
This out fit was fun, but….
A.  niether one of us were pregnant
B.  this was a 10K mud run and the stuffing in the shirts got REALLY wet and heavy
C.  all the Angry Bird face parts were hot glued on, and by the end of the race, they were all gone and no one knew what the heck we were suppose to be dressed up as.
D.  at least I was wearing running shorts.

Mud Run

From Janine:

One New Years Eve, we had a feetie pajama party and after a few glasses of champagne, I had the brilliant idea that I’d run my New Years’ Day race in the pajamas. Unfortunately, we had unseasonably warm weather that day and I thought for sure I was going to overheat and die! The fleece did not breathe at all – probably why they don’t make polar fleece running apparel???

What was your last impulse buy?

Are you dealing with heat during your runs?  How hot has it been getting where you are?

Last thing you baked?

Who had a Topsy Tail (or was it just me?)?

I baked chocolate chip cookies yesterday! I also have a pretty cute baking helper :-) Today our heat index is 107… yay! I run early and bring ice water in the stroller. Definitely rocked the topsy tail for a good 5-7 years. Good times!

Reply

Love the topsy tail!

It has been so hot and so humid. This morning my run was in the rain and it was a welcomed change of pace!

Reply

I can’t remember my last good impulse buy. Maybe I should remedy that.

It is so miserably hot and humid here. I’m coping by doing short runs outside and longer ones inside. I might have to just start splitting runs when I want to go further than 5 miles…which will be immediately now that I’ve been cleared to run longer again.

I baked cinnamon sugar bread and muffins yesterday.

I definitely had a topsy tail!

Reply

Dill potato chips.

Reply

Oh my gosh…Give the girl credit for running in fleece footie pajamas!!!! No impulse buys lately :) But now that you mention it… ;)
I never splurged on a Topsy Tail but I created my own pony tails to look like that!
Heat, oh Heat. MN humidity and WIND is in full swing right now!!! 90% humidity, 80 and 90 degree weather, and 15mph winds all at the same time :)

Reply

My last impulse buy was some lululemon shorts… 100% worth it.

I’m on vacation this week and it is SO hot. Doesn’t get that hot in NJ thankfully!

I baked some Rice Krispie treats last night. Dipped in chocolate and covered in sprinkles. Love vacation desserts!

Reply

Enjoy every second of your vacation and now I am craving Rice Krispie treats. Never regret any purchase at lululemon.

Reply

I bought that skirt on Saturday! love it. So comfy and cute for summer. Ps. I grew up with your SIL Shelly in Hemet, and I know Billy from Alpine Apartments at BYU and through our friend Amy Stephens. so even though you don’t know me, I don’t feel as bad “stalking” your blog everyday because we have some connections :)

Reply

Wait a second…. I lived in Alpine Apartments at that same time…that is where I met him!! Where you in our ward? That is so cool you know Shelly too! Where do you live now? What kind of top are you going to wear with the skirt…I need to figure that out:)

Reply

no way! We probably were in the same ward then. :) That year I was dating my (now) husband, so I didn’t get to know very many people. We moved to Texas for 3 years, but just moved back to Utah in March for a new job!
I wore it with just a black shirt and a big red necklace…not very creative but it still looked cute!

Reply

I bought a Digital metronome but still haven’t used it. It’s in the low 70’s when I start my run in the morning so the heat isn’t too bad but the humidity is killing me. The last thing I baked was Salmon…does that count???

I didn’t have a topsy tail but I always wanted one. I just learned how to do them on my own.

Love your little baking partner, she is so cute!!

Reply

Brooke has the cutest little topsy tail! I never had one, but I always did it myself in middle school (along with terrible french braids that I thought looked cool). Love middle school.

Reply

I do a lot of impulse buying at target. Last night I found s’mores eggo waffles! They will probably form part of my dinner tonight.

Heat doesn’t even begin to describe it here. Going to be 106 today! Vegas summers are not kind to runners.

Reply

Can’t wait to hear more about your talk with the teens! S’mores – YUM!! Always a good decision, never an impulse buy!

Reply

Oh man, we had a topsy tail thingy when I was growing up! I loved that thing!

Target takes all my money. :/

Reply

I loved the topsy tail. I can distinctly remember when we got it. There are 4 girls in my family, we had a blast with that thing.

Reply

I see s’mores in your immediate future ;) And possibly Rice Krispie squares in mine… I made a batch of healthier squares using almond butter and honey a few days ago and polished off the batch in record time. I told myself I probably shouldn’t make any more but… I need them in my life.

Reply

Ahhh I want s’mores so badly! My last impulse buy was going to be marshmallows but they ran out so I had to settle on cookies. Tough loss.

Reply

Apparently I am the only one who didn’t like the Topsy Tail. It always got horribly tangled in my hair. I’m sure it couldn’t be that I have always been completely inept at hair-doing…

Reply

Heat! Yes…but I complain so much in the winter that I can’t complain :)!…but I cut my run from 8 miles to 7 this morning.
We are making taffy today!!!!!

Reply

Those outfits…..hilarious!!! It is over 100 degrees in the Deep South. I love it and actually ran my 4 miles at 2pm! I always wanted a topsy tail….now I still do…

Reply

What an adorable baking helper! My matron of honor and her husband joke around about their baby being their sous chef. I didn’t have a topsy tail device, but I used to style my ponytails that way when I was younger. I’ve been lucky and haven’t yet had to run in any temps warmer than 75 degrees or so, but I’m not looking forward to the hot, hot temps during rest of summer. Enjoy your afternoon and evening!

Reply

We cut our 6 mile run to 3 on Monday because of the heat and humidity, did 5 today and almost died.
The kids baked a cake with their sitter yesterday, they did a great job. I love to bake, but it is just to darn hot here.
Finally, I saw Janine at that race and remember thinking she must be HOT. Love looking at the pictures!

Reply

No topsy tail. But I totally styled my hair like that when I was younger. It would have probably looked a LOT better had I owned one of those. I know lots of girls in my neighborhood have them though and use them on their daughter’s hair, much like you do with Brooke. Speaking of Brooke – that pic of her in her nursery from this morning is adorable – and so is her room. I love it. I always sing that song to my kids :)

As long as I am up before the kids, the heat hasn’t been a problem. Yay for early morning runs!

I baked that cinnamon roll cake recently that you have talked about before. It was yummy. I had to have my slice and then make Ross take the rest far far away from me so that I would not eat the whole pan.

I bought a Good2Go bar today when I was at Good Earth. I sampled some at the marathon expo and it was so yummy. It was expensive though so I probably shouldn’t have, but it was delicious!! I found a PB at the store the other day (that I totally IG about – cause I am super lame like that) that I am sure I will eventually cave and buy. Each time I go to Walmart it gets harder and harder to resist it.

Probably more baby clothes today… I really need to stop!
It has not been hot at all but today is finally semi nice so it will feel like a hot run tonight.
I made chocolate chip banana coffee cake from The Sweets Life Monday night for my work treat day.
Of course I remember topsy tail!

Reply

ouf the chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels at TJs! So good!
I don’t tolerate running in the heat very well so when it’s gunna be anywhere near 80 I wake up as early as I have to or I guess I could run at night
I have not baked in a while, I should, maybe after my exam :)
I want to run in onesy pajamas!!
Yes we had a topsy tail!

Reply

My last impulse buy was a dark chocolate bar with almonds from Trader Joe’s.

The heat and humidity in Chicago has been brutal this past week. I ran my first half marathon this past Sunday (it was in the upper 80’s) and there were warnings due to the heat and humidity. There were several runners that collapsed on the course. I’ve just been drinking a lot of water and Gatorade to remain hydrated.

The last thing I baked was banana/Greek yogurt bread.

I did have a topsytail when I was little, but my mom actually crafted one out of an old wire hanger instead of buying the one from the TV infomercial. Brooke’s mini topsytails are too cute :)

Reply

So this is my awful running outfit!! But wait there is a story! This morning I headed out for a 4 miler wearing my Pure Flow 2’s Brooke’s shorts and some random shirt ( not really important) at about 2 miles I had a black bear encounter!!!! but it did not do what it should have when I screamed instead it came at me! And then followed me down the road!!!! I have never ever been so scared in my life!!! needless to say I can not send you a picture of my outfit ( let’s just leave it at gross) so I am sending you a picture of what I went to town and bought and what I will now always carry!!!

Reply

Seriously? It chased after you???? That’s HORRIFIC!

Reply

It really did first I froze and screamed and waved my arms trying to seem big but it took like 3 steps towards me it was down a bit off the road so I slow backed away still screaming and it kept coming so I turned and started running away but turned back and it was now on the road behind me. It actually was moving toward me but now I realize it basically was keeping the same distance between us. Lets face it if it had wanted to attack me I never would have been able to get away! I kept running and only looked back one more time and it was still there. I ran another 1/2 mile til I got to the neighbors ( I live in the middle of nowhere in Montana!)

Reply

That’s an amazing story. Glad you are okay!!!

Reply

It’s been incredibly humid here, but fortunately when I run at 7 AM at least this week) it hasn’t been horribly hot yet!

Love the topsy tails!

I’ve given fitness presentations to local Girl Scout troupes and I love it! Have fun!!!

Reply

Pretty nail polish colors from Target! :)

Reply

S’mores!! Yum, I haven’t had those in ages!

I used to want a topsy tail but then I figured out how to do it without the tool. Or maybe someone showed me. That’s probably more likely. Neat that you do it to Brooke, and that she lets you! :)

Reply

I love those marshmallows. It’s like Hot Cocoa without the cocoa, or Lucky Charms without the cereal. Fun Fun Fun……

Reply

I am currently wearing that skirt you just bought from Target. It is SO comfortable. And now, I have to change out of it so I can go on my run. Not looking forward to running in what feels like a sauna outside, but gotta stick with my training plan.

Reply

Last impulse by was lululemon shirt/sweater that I pretty much live in now! So comfy!!!

Haven’t baked much lately but I’m going to make some cupcakes for my with graders tomorrow because its our LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!!! And the last day of my first year of teaching! I’m super excited :)

Where are you talking to the teens? I love that you’re doing that! Super important and I’m sure they’ll just love you and eat up everything you talk about :)

I definitely had topsy tails all the time when I was a kid! Every now and then I think about wearing my hair like that, but I haven’t yet as an adult. :)

Reply

My last impulse buy was a pair of teal skinny jeans! The weather has stayed fairly cool here in Oregon, and my long run on Sunday was full of light showers. I went on a long trail run for the first time and thought of you :)

Also, what type of sunglasses do you run with?

Reply

My last impulse buy was a strawberry Jariscos about 20 minutes ago on a walk.

Utah heat is a unique time at home, and I even made this granola in it on Monday…

http://www.newmomstalk.com/2013/02/04/super-yummy-homemade-granola/

It makes an awesome ice cream topping!!

Reply

My last impulse buy was an external hard drive. It’s definitely needed as I have about 10,000 photos on my computer.

It’s so freaking hot, the heat index was in the high 80s/low 90s during my race on Saturday. And my ideal running temp is 25 degrees!!!

I backed mac n’ cheese about a week ago.

I totally rocked the topsy tail. My mom did mine for me too. I think it’s a genius to do it for as many generations as possible. Keep the tradition alive!

Reply

I just had a convo about topsy tails last weekend. I loved them! I haven’t baked in a while but have my eyes on a few Pinterest projects ;)

Reply

My mom used to use topsy tail for my hair all the time when I was little. Two years ago when I started doing triathlons I went and bought my own because that is the best hairstyle for swim caps, helmets, and visors.

Doing my part to keep the topsy tail trend alive!

Reply

Went out to buy a new sports bra today and saw a New York 26.2 Sweaty Band and HAD to get it!! Total impulse buy.

I haven’t been dealing with heat because I get out there around 6 AM and it’s usually in the 70’s, but the humidity is 100% and by the time I finish I look like I just got out of the shower.

I made my own topsy tail and think they’re great!

Reply

I totally remember the topsy tail! I don’t think I had one though.

My last impulse purchases were the complete series of Friends and the books “Born to Run” and “Run Less, Run Faster”. All totally worth it.

Last thing I baked was some chicken. Yum!!

Reply

My last impulse buy was…four pairs of sunglasses. I had a pair I LOVED from the dollar store and I lost it at a track meet :( So I went back for a replacement, and found four similar styles. I had to get them all to decide which I liked best. At least it was just the dollar store!

Reply

I always impulse buy at Target! Last time I got an extra clothes basket. My husband thinks it so funny how “every single woman” loves Target.

I never had a topsy tail but I do remember them. My sisters and I usually braided our hair if it wasn’t just in a pony tail.

Also, Brooke looks like one of the cutest baking helpers I’ve seen, second only to when my niece Nora helped me make Valentine’s Day cookies.

Reply

It has been HOT! The temps are in the 90s but the humidity is the real kicker. I’ve been running on the mill lately….does the trick but outdoors is more fun!

Reply

We have heat here and it has forced me to do early workouts without the kiddos in the double BOB!

Impulse buys were this evening. I was caught in a monster thunderstorm returning something at the mall. So I could not go out to the car. I hate shopping for myself but I can not resist clothes for my girls. I got pjs and a cat shirt (2 year old is obsessed with cats) on clearance at Gymboree. Ok, the pjs were actually a need but the shirt was not. The storm was still awful so I found a dress for my 5 year old for $4 that although not needed would be awesome for her first day of Kindergarten in Sept. Thunderstorms I guess can be good for the retail industry!!

Reply

I bought those marshmallows too! Only in chocolate! The kiddos wanted hot chocolate when we were at the lake. Yes, even though it was 90 degrees out! The water was cold. :)

It is so humid here. My early morning runs are cool but sticky.

I’m baking a cake Friday for my sons birthday. The big 5! Spider-Man cake!! Hope it turns out as cute as I imagine it being.

Reply

omg topsy tail!!!!! memories!!!!!!

Reply

Last impulse buy was cadbury chocolate, like 10 bars of the stuff. Well if they are going to be half price then they are going to fall into the shopping basket.

It’s winter here, but in summer it gets hot (like 104f), so I try to get my runs done 1st thing in the morning.

Last thing I baked was a flourless mandarin cake for the members of the parent club at my daughters school (i’m the president of the club this year), it went down really well for morning tea.

Reply

Well, the last thing to come out of my kitchen was a cookie dough ice cream pie…not exactly baked, though ;-)

Reply

The heat in Fort Worth is AWFUL! And it isn’t even close to how bad it’s going to get as we head into July and August. I’m adjusting by running around 6 in the mornings, but it’s a struggle since I have to be at work by 8, so there have been lots of wet hair days at work, oh well!

My last impulse buy was a tube of mini m&m’s…they really shouldn’t put those right at the front of the Old Navy counter. I have no self control.

Reply

excellent choice on the Essie :)

Reply

I ran 4 easy miles today too. It’s been sooooo humid here! In the 80’s, but the humidity just makes it so much worse. I was so excited when it started lightly raining on my long run last Saturday, it helped to kill some of the humidity.

Essie at Target gets me too! I just bought 2 very similar to your colors-Sunday Funday and Turks and Caicos.

Reply

My last impulse buy was today after work- I bought two cute work tops (but I found them at Ross so I don’t feel too guilty, ha)

Reply

So, did you know that there is a target debit card. It debits straight from your checking account. It saves them the fee they are charged when you use your own debit or credit card aaaannnnddddd you save 5% on every purchase in store and free shipping when you order online!!!!!!!!! You might already know about this but I just learned about it and am super psyched!!!!

Reply

oh my gosh brooke is getting so big!! =O

i’m dealing with the insane heat by getting up at 5:30 tomorrow to run. It’s already after 11pm agh!

Reply

My last impulse buy was probably my polka dotted Nike running shoes. This heat while running SUCKS! I have major chaffing going on under my boobs and on my thighs :( I put some vaseline on my rough spots today and it was much better. The last thing we baked was chocolate chip cookies for our local fire house :) I never used the Topsy Tail, but did do a similar hairstyle.

Reply

Holy Moly!!!! You are famous!!! I get fifteen comments and I think, “man I am gettin’ popular!” Janae it was so great to meet you. I thought you did the best job presenting to the girls. I love your spunk and your personality just seeing you for the short time that I did. I also love how you started out running. That story is killing me! Your mom is awesome. I totally relate to your mom. Two people is just better than one. Ya know, it’s a deterent right? :)

I am very excited to get to know you!!! Lisa is going to set up a girls night! We will hang out, talk, shop, run…no we won’t be running…but I will run with you especially if it’s just four miles. :) Take great care and happy salad making…

I forgot to answer your questions.

Um, I run on a treadmill. I know that’s not the best. I will still fun with you though. :)

I do my daughter’s hair in Topsy Turvy style all the time. I have three daughters and four sons by the way.

My last impulse by were sandals….and I took them back. :)

The last thing I baked? The same muffins as you did!!!!!! See how we are already connected? That was a sign don’t you think? :) Talk soon,

Shauna

My last impulse buy was a pair of these jazzy leggings: http://www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/bambam-orion-leggings/invt/5743441380031/&colour=Black

And it’s a good thing I did cos they’ve sold out of my size now!

It’s NOT hot in the UK! I miss Australia! It’s always hotter there in their Winter than it is in the UK Summer time!

Sometimes it’s hard being an Aussie in the UK ;)

Reply

Hey! Longterm reader but first time commenter!! Those pigtails are so cute!

How hot has it been getting where you are? Ok, I live in Perth Australia so I can almost guarantee that it’s hotter here!! The hottest I have ran in is 105 – such a silly idea. I had to go to bed with sunstroke after. We train at 6am and by then it is already around 86.

What was your last impulse buy? I bought a spiderman iphone cover for my husbands upcoming birthday – every year I have to get him spiderman something!

Last thing you baked? A vegan, gluten free crumble for a girls dinner party! Surprisingly yummy!

Without the heat index, it will be 98 today (heat index will push that easily to 107). Yesterday, was 97. Oh Happy Summer Days.

Reply

I always make impulse buys at Target! The other day I bought S’mores Eggo Waffles…yup.

It is soooo hot in the Baltimore area right now. I ran at lunch time yesterday and it was over 90 degrees and very humid. I made it 3.8 miles…

BTW, is that a maxi skirt in that picture?

Reply

If you’re a s’mores lover, you HAVE to make these with your mini-mini marshmallows. They are insanely delicious!

I bought that same skirt from Target a couple of weeks ago and I love it! It is super comfortable and fun to wear. Enjoy it!

Ahh s’mores! Made this recipe last night and it is so hard to stop eating them: http://www.marinmamacooks.com/2013/06/frozen-smores/

Reply

Last impulse buy was jalapeno cheetos! OMG SOOOOO GOOOD!!!! I live in Louisiana & I run in the mornings before work. At 5:00 am it’s been 74-76 degrees with 88-92% humidity. IT’S AWFUL!!

Reply

My last impulse buy was a nail polish from Target… No surprise, obviously ;-) And I hope you’re making smores and sending me some of them. You should go to http://www.sallysbakingaddiction.com and make one of her smores’ recipes! They all look soo good!

Is it bad I still do those ponytails?!? Just say no. ;-)

Reply

Feetie pajamas! Love it!

Can’t remember my last impulse buy… I tend to mull things over to death until I talk myself out of them. BORING.

It’s been in the 90’s all week here (Philly area) so I have been either running at 4:30am outside or on my treadmill in the basement after work. I have 11 miles ahead of me at 7am this Saturday and I hope the heat doesn’t get to me by the end!

Last thing I baked was mini cupcakes for my stepson’s Boy Scouts end-of-year celebration.

Totally did the topsy tail and I have curly hair so it just looked weird.

Reply

My last impulse buy was an adorable dress for my daughter at Target — I can never get out of there without spending at LEAST $50.

It’s just hot and humid here (in Florida) which makes running miserable. The only way I get it done is going before the sun rises.

I can’t even remember the last time I baked.. I’m going to have to fix that this weekend. I’m thinking chocolate chip banana bread!

Definitely had a Topsy Tail and totally forgot about it!

Reply

I totally forgot about the topsy tail! I had one of those.

I can’t remember my last impulse buy. Maybe some fizzy jellies.

I haven’t even attempted to run since arriving in Moab. I’ve just been working out indoors. I did a 3 mile hike yesterday and thought I was going to die because of the heat! My English body can’t cope with it!

Reply

last impulse buy…2 Essie nail polish’s last night

Reply

Last impulse buy…..a straightening iron. Is that weird?

I baked chocolate chip, PB chocolate chip, and MONSTER cookies last night!

I never had a topsy turvy, but I just split my hair in half and threaded my ponytail through. Never did look the same.

Reply

I love Brooke’s topsy tails! And I’ve accepted that I can’t go into Target with a list because I never follow it anyway, haha.

Reply

Looks like it’s going to be 116 degrees tomorrow and Sat here in Mesa, AZ!!! Craziness I tell ya. So ya, not too much running going on these days and it’s making me slightly depressed! :(

Reply

Janae!!! We are twinsies! I had a 4 mile easy run on Wednesday too! Ok that made me ridiculously excited, probably more so than I should have been ;)

Reply

Target steals all my money too! I actually wore that same skirt repeatedly while on vacation the last few weeks.

I’m still rocking the topsy tail too!
