My top 3 list and my next 2 races.

I didn’t take one picture yesterday.  That is probably the first time since the very beginning of my blog that that has happened.  Weird.  Hopefully Brooke isn’t mad at me in the future for not documenting every second of her life on June 23rd, 2013.

Two races are officially on the agenda and I couldn’t be more thrilled (remind me that I was once excited to race a 10k when I am wanting to pass out during mile 5).

My first 10k ever.  I will be guaranteed a pr if I finish:)  I am stoked for THIS 10k because Santa Cruz is gorgeous and it is on the 4th of July so I guarantee it will be awesome.

And in August I will be running Summer Breeze 1/2 Marathon!!!   I have done a Brazen race before and they put on the BEST races!  Added bonus: you run along the water for the majority of the race.  This race is selling out FAST so hurry and sign up now if you are interested.

Another amazing thing they have going on is called REMOTE RACING  and it is a program they are just getting started for all of their races.  It’s great for people who can’t get out to races but want to set a goal and reach it, get the shirt and medal, etc. and run in spirit with their buddies — they have remote runners all over the country and even in other countries and places like army bases in Afghanistan!

Sorry to be off topic, but I have a question for you and your runner readers, Janae… from something that happened on my run this morning. I’m just building my mileage back after having a baby and struggling to pace my runs. We have a heat wave going on the east coast, and I was trying to bust out a high mileage run early this morning before it was really roasting. It was one of those choppy runs… slow-going in the heat, then I needed a pit stop, then I had a hair tie malfunction… just frustratingly stop and go. Finally I was in my groove and really setting a good pace, and someone pulled up alongside me to ask for directions.

What do you do in this situation? They were complicated directions and it required me to fully stop, pause all my running apps I had going, etc. and worst of all, stop me cold right when I felt I was getting in my groove on an already tough run. I stopped and helped, but felt really frustrated. This is a heavily trafficked route with a cafe and the village’s town hall just a quarter mile away… there were other ways to get directions. What would you and your readers do in this situation? Pretend not to hear and keep going? Be a helpful person/good citizen and stop to help? Yell out, “sorry, can’t stop”? My husband acted like I was crazy to consider anything but stopping to help, and that’s what I did… but since you (and your readers) are often timing miles/splits/doing a specific workout, I wondered how you would handle this situation. What’s more important, good citizenship or pacing? ;) Would love to see what others think. Love your blog, Janae! xoxo

Reply

HEY JANE!!! Hmmmm that is a tough situation! I am usually so in the zone I probably wouldn’t even notice ha. As long as the situation seemed safe to me (as in it wasn’t in the middle of nowhere and I knew that other cars/people could see me so nothing bad could happen) then I would stop and talk to them. You can just think of it this way… your run made you even more mentally strong:) Stoping and then starting up again is HARDER for me than just running fast continuous and the fact that you did it makes you stronger!

Reply

PS if it was during a race…. I wouldn’t stop because I am crazy about that.

Reply

I get asked for directions all the time. I must look like I know where I’m going – or I just happen to run in a high-tourist area! I always stop and give them directions because I don’t think they would understand why I couldn’t (I doubt my out of breath “intervals!” would be explanatory enough). I don’t want them to feel hurt.

Reply

Thanks for the replies, ladies! I definitely would never want to be rude, that was just the most frustrating run the other day and the direction-asking was the icing on the cake! Especially since there was so many other options for asking someone for help. Oh well, another day another run! And I’ll just chalk any stops up to mental toughness… thanks, Janae :).

Reply

I’m doing my first 15k on the 4th! Should be fun and of course, a PR ;) I’m already trying to figure out an outfit that will make me look super American. I’ve already decided on one white and one blue compression sock. I just need a red tank top.

Reply

I used to work at the Nordstrom in VF and LOVE the workout clothes brand Zella… the capris are my favorite because they aren’t see through! You should check them out…the anniversary sale is coming up (I only buy things if they are on sale) and they always bring in a ton of stuff from Zella

I wish I could run a half marathon in August but I don’t think I should try to train for my first one in 4 weeks! The SF giant race is in August too I totally would do that one!

Reply

I love scrubs and Regina Spector! You should listen to Tori Amos if you haven’t yet! Happy Phantom is one of my all time favorite songs of hers. Amazing Piano player as well!

Reply

Those first mantras really resonate with me. I am getting ACL surgery tomorrow and while I am really nervous, I am definitely ready to be able to run/play soccer/ski without pain. I won’t be running any races on the 4th of July but maybe I’ll shoot for weight bearing by then :)

And then I found robot shaped Popsicles for the same price as the regular shape ones! I’m so excited!! (And no, I don’t have kids in my life yet – just like fun shapes for myself hehe)

Well, you solved my 2013 goal problem. I’m trying to run a Half every month, but I was injured in the first quarter, so I’m behind (only have four so far). We’re traveling all summer, so it was looking pretty bleak that I would find anything that would work on my calendar. I’ve signed up for the Summer Breeze Half and am now scouting around for other “Remotes!” Thank you!!!!!

Reply

I am so glad this option is going to work so well for you!

Reply

I’ll be doing a 10k on the 4th of July! Most everyone in town will be doing the peachtree roadrace, but I’ll be running in a much smaller one outside of town. At 6 months pregnant, I don’t expect a PR but it’ll be fun :D

I met you at the Coyote Race and that’s a personal fav. I was super conflicted that August 3/4th weekend of Brazen Summer Breeze and also the SF Giants half – so I picked the SF Giants as – it’s from the ball park along the embarcadero out to Crissy field and back. Crissy Field is one of my favorite all time places to run in the world – that and lots of friends seem to be signed up for it as well. However – I’ll have inner peace knowing that you’re going to eat an it’s it on my behalf!! I’m signed up for this years SJ RnR so hopefully see you there. and hopefully fro yo meet up before?!!!

I love your mantras – will adopt Jillian Michaels one- love her!

I GOT THIS
stay the course, achieve the goal

I’m sorry, but that is gibberish. “Odds” dont equal aithynng. The probabilities to which they convert have to equal one (or 100%), if all potential winners are included. In the case of the Big Line, it is possible that not all candidates are included, so the sum of the probabilites could be less than one (or 100%). But it is mathematically impossible for the sum of the probabillites to be greater than one (or 100%).

love Jillian Michaels quote!! The only problem is that i can’t remember it when i need it (e.g. when I think I am going to die in a second during a run….). In that case I will only think ok I am dead. ahahah!!!
