How much do you sit?

I am LOVING your worst running outfits….keep them coming!

Workout:  8 miles @ a 7:56 pace with the sunrise.  One of those ‘I really do love running days.’  When my alarm clock goes off for easy runs I am always super excited to get up and run but when I know it is going to be a hard fast run it takes a little convincing to get myself out the door.

This was my repeat song this morning.  It is kind of a weird song and it is kind of weird that I listen to songs on repeat (according to Billy) but I like it like that.

 Brooke’s workout:  Step aerobics class.

And a veggie filled lunch.  The oasted broccoli and sweet potato with grilled chicken were topped with my spicy peanut vinaigrette.

ANYTIME there is an article that pops up about injuries I am the first person to read it since I am positive I have had every running injury invented.   Runner’s World had a great one about different sources of injuries and the part about ‘your job’ and ‘your commute’ being a source of running injures were kind of interesting to me.

It made me start thinking about how much my job (Brooker’s Mom:) has me sitting.  It is actually a lot.  When she is napping I am sitting on the couch blogging or writing emails and when we are playing I am sitting on the ground with her reading to her or playing with toys or having her crawl all over me.  We do get out to go on walks, to the park, to her gym class, the zoo and on errands but I actually do still sit a lot of the day and at weird angles.  Interesting.  Time to work on my posture.

Working peeps:  How long is your commute?

Does your job/life have you siting a lot or moving around?  Could you estimate about how many hours a day you are sitting?

What is your favorite vegetable lately?

Was today a love running day, like running day or a I am so over running day?

Ugh I sit all day in front of a computer and I can literally feel my muscles tighten up throughout the day, especially my hips and glutes. I wish I could have a standing desk but apparently it’s unprofessional :(

Reply

Unprofessional?!?!? I thought standing desks were all the hype now! I went to visit customer last year in Germany (a bank), and everyone had standing desks there. Felt so weird when I was meeting with someone at their desk and had to stand! But I guess I would benefit from making the switch myself…

I had a love running day until my knee started hurting… But I am not going to let an injury happen so working from home today and icing my knee at the same time.

Reply

Love that spicy peanut dressing too. Lately my favorite vegetable is salad with blue cheese dressing! Does that count? It’s 101 degrees here today… So it’s a sweaty I love running day :-)

I know for a fact I’ve gotten a running injury from sitting! From last summer into the fall, I spent most of my days sitting, and I was editing at my school newspaper in the fall and sitting at my desk for hours at a time. I ended up having a lot of pain in my lower back and butt (ha!) and the only solution was for me to stand! I stacked books on my editors’ desk so I could work on my computer and used a box on my desk in my room to do homework. In addition to lots of stretching, the standing did me a lot of good.

Reply

When I was a server, I NEVER sat down!! On my feet the entire shift! It was pretty crazy to adjust after that to being on the computer and sitting a lot more, but I make sure to get up A LOT and go on walks/runs and workout twice a day. My mom told me a great trick- to look away from your computer for a few minutes every half hour to let your eyes rest a bit. As for my fave vegetable, lately it’s been zucchini! We just heat it up in a pan with a little olive oil and salt and pepper and yummm I could eat it all day every day!

I definitely sit at work for 8 hours and it takes me 25 minutes to drive each way. I used to be able to bike to work – which was awesome! But I live 24 miles away now, so that’s not quite as feasible!!!

I’m LOVIN asparagus right now!

Reply

I work from home, so I can choose how, where, how long, etc. I am in each position. Average sitting time is less than five hours in a 24-hour period, as I don’t work normal hours.

I’m loving my 2Cs and O veggies aka celery, carrots, and onion. Not surprisingly they all wound up in my lentil veggie chili last night for dinner.

Reply

I definitely sit a lot throughout the day. Typically I work sitting down, so I guess most of my day is in a chair. I try to get up every few minutes and stretch a little, I kind of don’t want to estimate how much I sit;)
I remember when I was younger and working busier jobs – I would hardly ever have a chance to sit down. So much different than now.
My favorite vegetable as of late has definitely been roasted carrots. So dang good.

Reply

I listen to songs on repeat, too!! I hardly sit at all for my job- by the end of the day my legs are tired!!

Reply

Urgh. I’m studying for the bar exam right now and basically sit ALL DAY except for when I go out for whatever workout/run my marathon training calls for. I’d love to move a lot more but unless someone bestows me a walking desk, it’s not happening. I can feel how creaky it’s making me, too! Just trying to get up and stretch as often as possible.

Reply

During bar study my friends and I would get up from the desk and run stairs every hour. Good luck, you’ve got this!

I am a nanny so I do my share of running around but I also sit a TON. Nap time and play time has me firmly planted on my buns. I make sure we get out and go on walks and to the park so I don’t just sit around all day. My commutes aren’t bad. One family lives 15-20 minutes away and the other is 10 minutes. That is significantly better than my job prior to this where I had a 40 minute commute, in traffic it could be up to 2 hours.

Reply

Being a graphic designer, I sit a lot!! Probably 5-6 hours of my work day is spent sitting. Being pregnant, I’m really hating veggies right now. I’m loving the green monster veggie juice I buy at the store, though.

Reply

Working in a hospital you NEVER get to sit! My commute right now is 45 minutes which is 40 minutes longer than I’d like it to be.

Today was an over running day before I started – hate intervals in this crazy heat! But afterwards it was a love running day because I felt awesome that I was done!

I’ve been addicted to asparagus lately… Which I hated as a kid!

Reply

My commute is about 30 minutes each way. Longer with traffic and when there are home Brewer’s games!

I don’t get to sit at my job. I’m standing and moving around all day! Sometimes it’s a curse, but it’s mostly a blessing.

My favorite veggie is cauliflower. Love. Love. Love it! I can easily eat a whole head in one sitting.

Today was a “like” running day. I was supposed to do a 5K but it got cancelled due to inclement weather. I went on a run anyway. It was awful. My slowest pace. I walked so much. It was humid. Gah. I still feel good that I went out and did it, but it could have been better.

Reply

I sit at a computer most of the day, but I try to get up regularly and move around. The fact that I work from a remote, home office helps a lot. I can break up my day with a mid-morning or lunchtime workout.

I did a track workout this morning. My legs felt pretty heavy, but I was glad to get it in!

Right now I’m addicted to zucchini sticks and red pepper dipped in homemade hummus! YUM!

Reply

I have an 8-5 desk job, but luckily it’s only a 5 minute commute and less than 5 minutes from the YMCA so I can head there over lunch for either a core training class or really light cardio to get up and get moving. It makes a big difference. If I can’t get there over lunch and have to sit for 8 straight hours, my whole body feels awful. But on the flip side, I think it would be tougher to be on my feet all day. My legs get a chance to rest up from my morning runs to be ready to go again the next morning :)

Reply

What about laying all day? Hah I’m glad I don’t have a desk job!

Reply

Thankfully, I walk to work – about 15-20 minutes each way but I do sit all day. I try to do walking meetings with my coworkers and incorporate walking into my day by using the restroom on a different floor and walking over lunch. It is so easy to just stay camped out at your desk all day though!

Reply

I never thought about sitting being a source of injury. That’s so interesting! I spend way too many hours sitting. 8 hours at work plus whenever I’m home at night so I don’t want to count. Favorite veggie: green beans!

Reply

No running for me today–still recovering from my 50-miler! I’m kind of glad (actually very glad) I’m not running cause it’s been 90 degrees the last three days, and I hate running in the heat!

My commute is only 10 mins. (or 30 when I bike it), and I sit for most of the day, unfortunately.

Reply

I’ve been on a roasted brocolli kick lately. Love! I hateeee sitting/being still. Thank goodness I have a job that doesn’t allow me to sit/be still. At one point during my career I had a 1 hour commute. 1-way. Misery.

Reply

Luckily as a teacher I walk around a lot. I also sit on a stability ball whenever I do sit down- it’s my favorite :)

Reply

My commute is maybe 30 minutes by train. Not bad. I probably sit 5+ hours a day which is horrendous especially as my legs are still sore from Sunday’s race.

I love cherry tomatoes lately – cannot get enough of them!

Today is a rest or cross training day. I could feel my shins just while sitting so I need to give my old bones a break!

Reply

I’m lucky to have a job that let’s me move around a lot. I swear… days where I spend more time sitting leave me feeling a lot more tired than the days I’m running around a lot. I don’t really have an idea how much I sit a day, but I try and get up every now and then to move around or I start going a little stir crazy. That and if I know I’m going to be sitting for a long time, I replace my chair with an exercise ball – it’s really helped improve my posture.

Reply

My commute to work is 95 miles one way!!! Soo I try to stand as much as I can the rest of the day!

Reply

WOW!! That is a crazy long commute Stacy!

Reply

I used to be a full time Autistic support teacher, I never sat at my job. even when I was sitting I had to be alert and ready to block something thrown or a child going into a fit! Now I work part time as a special ed preschool teacher and at home I have a 5 year old and 2 year old the rest of the days. I drive from preschool to preschool with my job and sometimes I sit for sessions and sometimes I push into the classroom for activities. When I push in I usually move! At home, I typically sit during the 2 year olds nap if I have a chance to do it otherwise it doesn’t happen. Sometimes I realize that at 9:00 at night it is the first time, besides meals that I have sat! My kids are on the go and active kiddos.

Reply

I’m a mum so some days I’m doing heaps other days I’m not doing much. I couldn’t say how many hours a day I’m sitting, i’d have to think about it.

Fav veggie atm is eggplant. That stuff grilled with a bit of olive oil and salt is awesome.

Today is a ‘don’t talk to me about anything, or I will cry’ days. *sigh*

Reply

Working peeps: How long is your commute? 3 miles- approximately 5 minutes with lights. Not bad!

I sit all the time at work… I try to get up and walk around the office once or twice an hour, but I sit the majority of the 8 hours…

What is your favorite vegetable lately? I don’t even know where to start! I’m on a veggie fajita/stir-fry kick. Is a veggie medley cheating? I like squash, zucchini, onions, mushrooms, peppers, corn, tomatoes, potatoes and sweet potatoes all together. And asparagus.

Was today a love running day, like running day or a I am so over running day? Today was a “I don’t really want to run day” at first but then half a mile in, it was “I love running”- per usual :)

Reply

I sit way too much at work and hate it. I much prefer to be moving/standing! Today was a short running day but definitely a love running day :)

Reply

I did almost the same workout…a bit slower but close!!! I enjoyed it too :)! I stay home with my kids and I guess I didn’t think about it too much but I sit a good amount too. Not as much in the summer but in the fall/winter we homeschool and I sit more for sure….that could be why I alsways seem to gain 5-10 pounds in the winter and as soon as summer comes it is gone :)!

Reply

oh gosh. I sit ALL day! Desk jobs. My commute is only 15ish minutes. Not bad at all. But I do try to get up and walk around to stretch out.

Reply

I sit ALL day at my main job, but I work part time too and I’m on my feet there. I’m lucky that my commute is so easy and I usually ride my bike or walk.

Been loving broccoli lately- can’t get enough!

Today was actually an “I’m glad I’m not running today!” as it was way way too humid + hot when I got my workout it. I ended up doing 14 miles on my bike and I never would have survived a run.

Reply

My commute to the office isn’t too bad (20 minutes) but I continue to drive throughout the day…it’s kinda the reason I stage rebellions on the weekends and refuse to drive :) On the bright side, it could be worse–my boyfriend takes a bus/light rail combo to avoid traffic for his commute, and his is 90 minutes each way!

Reply

Hey janae- I really love your blog! I really do! Your post, today, mentioned having an ‘I love running day’- which is great! Except for the fact that you seemed surprised by this, as though it were out of the ordinary. I hope your training isnt keepin you from enjoying the sport! Seeing this, along with your mention of having suffered numerous injuries in the past, makes me wonder if you’re over-extending your training and pushing it too far. This might explain your injuries far better than simply sitting for bouts of time. I guess im just thinking what’s the good in running if you’re not having fun?

Reply

HEY LISA!! Thank you so much for your comment. I didn’t really explain it very well:) I always have an I love running day AFTER the run is finished but during my hard runs it is hard! I think that is what I love about running, I love pushing myself and doing something that is hard! I DEFINITELY used to overexercise before I had brooke but now I am using a running coach and he makes up my workouts so I trust that he knows how to guide me so that I am not overtraining. I always love the workout after I am done but some of those hard runs I don’t love it until I am finished and stretching:)

Reply

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment! You’re a true sweetheart and I’m so glad to hear that your days of overworking yourself are long behind you. I think we runners can get a bit ahead of ourselves sometimes (possible pun? hehe) when getting caught up in the euphoria that we get from running. I often need to remind myself that it’s totally fine – and even great! – to take it easy and not push too hard or too much. I hope that you didn’t mind me voicing this sentiment with you, too :)

Reply

BAHAHA I loved your pun. THANK YOU for your comment. I definitely get caught up in the running high so I am glad you said something:) Have an amazing day!

Reply

I don’t sit too much… Teaching has me walking or standing most of the time. Or playing kickball with the kids if you only have 2 days left til summer break! Whooohoo I’m almost there!

Nothing is too far here so my biggest commute (I’m a substitute teacher) is about 20 minutes. Driving really hurts my back for too long so I try not to do too much for too long. I’m going to dust off my bike for my course this summer! Get a little extra exercise and I don’t want to pay for parking!

Reply

My commute to the office is horrible and I did it to myself. I took a new job where I have to drive to work everyday rather than take the L. I sit in traffic for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way every day. I’m trying to work from home once a week to keep my sanity. Once I’m at work, I sit in my dark cube and stare at a computer for 8-10 hours.

Reply

Today was an awful running day – and it wasn’t even a long or fast run. I don’t know if it is the traveling, knowing my husband is out of the country, the heat or what but it was abysmal!!! Oh, well – the next run will be better!!!

Reply

I am in my first “Real Job” our od college and the single hardest thing about adjusting to grown-up life has been sitting all day.
Despite my morning runs, I have literally had to go to the PT my body dislikes it so much.
Sadly my requests for a standing desk aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. In the meantime I get up and walk the stairs in our 8 story building and annoy my coworkers by always wandering around :)

Reply

I envy those who have jobs in which they can sit down longer than a 10 minute stretch! As a critical care RN, I wear a pair of brooks to work! :-/

Reply

I sit about 25 hours a day. I’m driving these kids all over the place. It feels some days like I live in the drivers seat!

I love kale lately.

Reply

I sit a lot and in weird positions. I’m experiencing (have been experiencing off and on for several years) some weird hip stuff always on my left side and I think sitting makes it worse. I try when sitting to sit with my weight evenly distributed and not have a leg tucked under me or tipped to one side.

Fav. veggie= roasted cauliflower. YUM!

Today was a cross training day and I spent some time on my yoga mat. Ready to do speed work in the AM!

Reply

Going through these comments, what I’ve learned is that I need to invest in a stability ball. Being a student, most of my day is sitting in some form–in class, studying, more class, more studying. I’ve heard about the dangers of sitting before but never really paid attention to them…but the fact that it’s bad for my running form might just be enough to kick my booty into gear!

Reply

Today was a I-have-a-love-hate-relationship-with-running day. Hated it while I was doing it, LOVED it afterward.

I am an aide in a Special Day Classroom, so I am constantly moving. The last day of school we even went for an hour long hike through the Redwoods. I love my job. The commute when I was in my old classroom was about 10 minutes, now it’s about 20.

I’m always obsessed with carrots. Any way, cooked, raw, anything. I’m surprised I’m not orange I eat so many.

Reply

I work from home and I am also a mommy. So I am sitting A LOT on the couch and floor as well.
My favorite veggie at the moment is green beans. :)

Reply

I could totally see how sitting makes things worse. The more I sat around through my surgeries, the more places sfarted to hurt because of my poor posture and lack of using my muscles properly.

My favorite vegetable lately is grilled corn!!!

Reply

I sit ( on a ball) at work as a librarian, but I walk to work, about 20 mins each way so I figure that works out even…

Reply

I think that’s how I got piriformis syndrome! I was able to get a standing desk so that I could stand every couple of hours, so that really helped. Otherwise, I’d be sitting at a desk for 10 hours a day!

Reply

I work all over the city, changing locations daily depending on where my meetings take me. My commute is anywhere from 12-35 minutes.

I stand up the entire time I am at work. So anywhere from 2-6 hours at a time. And I am moving around half that time.

Sweet potatoes are my favorite veggie right now. Just made sweet potato fries for dinner again tonight. I’m obsessed!

Today was an “I wish I could run, but I should probably follow doctor’s orders” day.

Reply

My commute is only 2 minutes but I do sit for 8-10 hours / day. At my old job I walked around a lot and I definitely can tell the difference in my body now!

I also do the “listen to songs on repeat” thing :) I think it’s totally normal, but I know it drives other people nuts!

Reply

Yeah this is pretty bad, my commute is an hour each way and then I sit for 10 hours straight at my desk. So at least half the hours in a day sitting. No bueno. I am loving zuccini right now!

Reply

My commute is literally 5 minutes -or most of one song… i am very lucky.

Reply

I actually developed (and quickly caught/started treating) ITBS from all the walking at my job! I work as a waitress and I’ve had the same (hideous) non-slip shoes for the past six years because I only work during breaks from school. I put insoles in, got new running sneakers and foam rolled/iced to high heaven and was better in a week.
Even not sitting can be dangerous too, unfortunately :(

Reply

Basically i was going to say the same thing. Being on your feet all day with lots of fast paced walking can def be a source of injury. I LOVE being able to sit.

Reply

Today was a rest day for me. I am a SAHM so I don’t have a commute, but I get in the habit of sitting at my computer for long periods of time reading my fav blogs!

Reply

My commute is 10min by car and now since my car broke down, 45-60min by bus. I teach, so I only really sit down at lunch and sometimes when I read to the kiddos (sometimes I move around the room).

My favourite veggie these days is a tie between orange peppers and grape tomatoes, but it’s berry season in my town so strawberries are the produce of choice!

Reply

I’m really glad you asked these questions, it’s really interesting hearing what people do to be active. I have an internship in the suburbs right now and between the 5 Weeks of house sitting i’m doing this summer and how expensive rent is in the area it wasn’t an option to move closer. It’s about 45 miles away and that means an hour without traffic and up to 3 with. luckily I chorus afford a 2 month press to a gym on the same block, so I leave at 430 am and beat rush hour traffic in the am, go up the gym and do my thing there. This mornings run was just eh but hey I got out there!

Reply

I stand up for 9 hours a day, no lunch break. It’s probably better than sitting!

Reply

I walk a lot around campus so I think that makes up for the sitting..
ZUCCHINI right now I’m all about it
Today was a “I know that I love running but my legs just feel heavy” running day

Reply

I stand for at least 8 hours a day when working. My commute is nada! My salon is attached to my house. :)

Reply

I work an 8 hour day at a desk, but I always try to get outside over lunch for at least a thirty minute walk. I work in the city, so I can always run an errand or just window shop to get out! My commute is a half mile walk to the train, a fifteen minute train ride, and another half mile walk to the office. It’s nice to have that built in exercise on my commute!

Reply

I started sitting a whole lot more when I started blogging! My commute is from my bedroom to my basement! I’m up and moving with my job, but between clients, I write, catch up on emails, etc…

Today was a love running day!

Reply

I read the same RW article! I thought it was really interesting, too. I try not to sit too much, but my hip abductors get really tight anyway. Luckily I’m on my feet a lot at my job, which helps me from sitting too much.

Reply

I sit WAY too much between my job and my commute, but since I’ve been struggling with a bulging disc- I’ve been taking walk breaks 4-6 times per day. Also, when I’m not at work I’m working out!!!

Reply

I’m doing Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp so today was my cardio day. I did a walk instead of a run because I’m not quite in running shape yet, but it was definitely a great walk!

Reply

Today was my rest day! My commute is great… take the Bart to a hospital shuttle. Takes about 30 minutes. I have to sit for about 4-5 hours per day (HATE IT!!) and the rest of the time I am up walking back and forth, moving patients, etc. I do try to get up as often as I can to stretch/move. I am in love with spinach and kale in my morning smoothie and am really loving red bell pepper lately too.

Reply

When I was in the Air Force, I was stationed in Los Angeles and my commute home was regularly over 2 hours!!! And that was before Satellite radio and all that good stuff in 2003. It was after spending 9 hours at a desk (with hourly breaks to run up the stairs). I got so many injuries training for my Marathon during that time– I had to cancel out of the St George because of Injury!! Never again!!

Reply

My commute is about 45mins, but that includes a bit of a walk, and I hardly ever get a seat on the train. I am hoping that now that the weather is better, I’ll be able to start cycling to work!

Reply

That broccoli and sweet potato lunch looks awesome – and of course the tasty chobani on the side! It’s only 11am and I’m hungry now! I’ve just started reading your blog but I love it – really personal and fun :)
My commute is 45 mins morning and evening, sat on a bus. I then sit at my desk 9 – 5 and don’t take as many breaks as I should. My posture is terrible but I’m working on it! Considering running the 5m route to work but it’s very uninspiring!

Reply

This is so interesting! I teach preschool (just like your awesome MIL!), so I am not only on my feet all day, but constantly squatting down to reach my kiddos eye level. This can definitely be a good thing, but when I’m in training for a race I’ve gotten that over-trained feeling since I don’t get much recovery time after my week-day runs. Regardless, I wouldn’t trade my job for anything! I’ve just learned to be mindful of how active I am.

Reply

I sit for roughly 10.5 to 12 hours per day. And that is just between my comute and work day. Throw in the night time blogging, reading, and lounging and it’s probably closer to 14-15. Thats insane. Even with an hour of workout that means I’m only off my tookus for like 3-4 hours a day. mind=blown.

Reply

I have a desk job, but luckily, I work from home, so I can get up and walk around or change positions for working whenever I want. I know that I still sit a good portion of the day, but it’s better than nothing, right?

Reply

I love that peanut sauce! And Trader Joe’s in general :)

My fav veggie lately is brussel sprouts, and they must be roasted! With shallots is the best.

My commute is about 35 minutes each way. I try to get up and walk around during the day, take walks outside on my breaks, and my job does have been running around between the 1st and 2nd floor pretty often so I always take the stairs, but I still must be sitting for about 6 hours every day. It drives my crazy, but at this point in life I just have to deal with it! I’m hoping someday I can have a job where I’m not chained to my desk! :)

Reply

When I get to do my marine science education classes, I’m standing on my feet a lot. My other jobs require way too much sitting for my liking. I actually read an article that said that long distance runners actually lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle because we still sit for 8+ hours or so a day (depending on your job, etc.). I thought that was REALLY interesting as well!

Today was just a “like running” day.

I love spinach. Every day of my life. Spinach on the reg. And Mushrooms.

Reply

1hour 30 to 2 hours driving each day to and from work. Sit for 8 hours at work. :(

Reply

I sit way too much at work. I drink a lot of water so I have to get up to go to the bathroom a lot. Luckily my drive to work is only about 10 minutes. I did my first tempo run this AM and loved it. So loved running day, even if I did get chased by a dog (he was little thank goodness).

Reply

I’m proud to say my commute is a 20 minute walk. I walk to and from work everyday and it was the best decision I ever made after trying a 3 hour (one way) commute. I sit a lot, but I try to close the office door and stretch it out a little or walk around.
Or, you know, but on Michael Jackson and dance it out. Sometimes, after a visit from my boss, “beat it” is the most appropriate thing to listen to…

Reply

My commute is about an hour each way…and that is only if traffic isn’t bad :(.

I then sit at my desk for 8 hours a day, but I really try to get up and walk around as much as possible and I work out at lunch time.

I am really loving brussels sprouts right now…I can’t believe I just discovered how much I love them!

Reply

Hi there, I am new to your blog…but I LOVE it :)

I found your post today super interesting since I am coming off an injury…a hip injury to be precise…and I sit ALLL day. I usually work 10 hour days and sit nearly all of that time and I commute 1 to 1.5 hours each way! None of the doctors I went to could ever really figure out what was wrong with my hip. It started around Easter and was a sharp groin pain. I tired everything…dry needling, stretching, deep tissue massage, rest etc. but nothing really helped. I finally got an MRI and it showed there might be a stress fracture and hip impingement syndrome…which I choose not to believe :) Against my doctors advice I have started running again (he says I should be on crutches)…I know, I know, bad, bad girl…but I think I am pretty in tune with my body and I am not having any pain…plus that same doctor tried to give me a cortisone shot and send me home when I was first complaining of the pain. Anyways, I have started going to a local chiropractor who works on a lot of athletes and I am feeling great! Just this Monday I was telling him my back was doing a weird popping thing and we discovered it was actually my hip flexor…because it was so tight…then my chiropractor got really excited because he said that although ‘they’ don’t know what causes hip impingement they have found that all patients having this ALSO have tight hip flexors…and he was excited because that meant I could hopefully relieve most of my pain by just stretching out those hip flexors.

And now after reading your post…its all starting to come together!

My office (architecture firm) was actually demoing a treadmill work station! Its a treadmill with a small desk area and a computer. The idea is you walk while you work…its actually pretty cool…although a little intimidating to those less coordinated people :o)

Sorry, that was a really long winded post!!
P.S. I am constantly listening to songs on repeat and I am obsessed with arugula at the moment.

Reply

I can totally relate! I also commute 1.5 hours each way and work at a desk 8-10 hours per day. I’ve been struggling with hip and low back pain for months! I’ve tried stretching, massage and yes, even the doctor. Same story…doctor told me to stop working out and running. I laid off for two weeks and had some relief but have now incorporate other cardio into my workouts besides running to avoid further injury. Sitting is definitely the hardest thing on your body!

Reply

I think I should try to improve my posture and I have heard core work could really help. Also, I notice that my low back feels much better when I regularly go to yoga…but I rarely regularly go :p

Does anyone out there sit on one of those large balls? Do you like it? Does it seem to help with all your sitting??

Since starting an office job, I can;t help but notice how often I’m sitting in a day. I’d love to invest in a standing desk!

I commute about and hr and 10 min every day round trip for work. The drive itself never really bothered me, but sitting at my desk all day did. (I am a financial analyst for a software company) About two months ago I decided that I couldn’t stand sitting all day much longer, so I built a stand-up desk at work. I found all of the pieces at ikea and built this, so that I can stand for most of the day now. http://instagram.com/p/Z3Ny1NDSZF/

I’ve noticed a huge difference in how my legs and back feel at the end of the day, and I have alot more energy!

That’s it interesting because the company that loaned us the treadmill desk sent us some case study information on the product. They had been testing in a few offices and hospitals. EVERYONE said they felt better and had more energy at the end of the day, even though they had been “walking” and working all day! Your company didn’t mind you switching out your desk?

It’s true! I use to have a afternoon cup of coffee to stay away but I find that I don’t need it anymore after standing for 6 of my 8 hr work day. My company didn’t mind, in fact, I have others in the company asking me to build one for them!

Marissa, that is awesome! I just sold my two ikea inn tables too! what is the keyboard part? I work 9.5 hour days and commute 2.20 round trip and I’ve been thinking of building a stand up desk but boxes are not sturdy enough :(

Since I just graduated college, I’m waitressing. I LOVE it because I get to stand and move around the whole time–it’s like a workout pt. 2 during the day!

Right now I am spending most of my time sitting – as much as I hate it! Being pregnant with twins is harder than I thought!

I always have to remind myself about my posture at work! I have a 45 min commute each way, and I sit at a desk for 8.5 hours/day. A coworker and I organized a little walking group that gets everyone outside for 30 mins 3-4 days/week so that helps! But I also just get up and walk aound, walk downstairs and back up, etc. every so often just to keep from being too sedentary!

Yesterday was a love running day! I ran before work and then got a couple extra miles in after!

I hate that I have to sit at a desk all day! I definitely sit for at least 8 hours a day, but I do try to get up and walk around occasionally. Luckily, I get to walk to and from work instead of driving! The best part of my day is when I get to head to the gym or out for a run after work!

I sit all day long at work. :( I am currently experiences lots of upper shoulder/back pain on my right (mouse) side.

Makes me wonder how many steps I get in each day when not running…..

Love running day! 4 miles intervals on hills-toughest thing ever. I felt like puking during 90% of the run. However, I felt like a champion once I was done ;) I need to thank my teammates for this-it was one of those hard workouts that I would have probably failed if running by myself…

The amount of time I sit at my desk at work is egregious – 8 hours a day. This is why I run after work during the week – I need to get out and stretch my legs and do some kind of activity. On the weekends I get up early and head out in the morning but on weekdays I save it for the end of the day. I don’t listen to music when I’m running outside, but on the treadmill I always put a song on repeat too. It helps me get into a rhythm better.

I Commute from Baltimore, MD to Washington D.C. every day my commute is 1:10 each way so 2:20 every day spent commuting. I take three modes of transportation: My car (15 mins), Commuter Train (26 mins), and Commuter Metro Rail (20 mins). LOTS OF SITTING. Then I work for (9.5 Hours) at a desk with a hopeful (1.5 hour lunch break at the gym) :). I do not get up much during the day but I’ve considered moving my monitor and keyboard so I have a “standing desk.” I also thought about a stability ball but what would I do on skirt days? So now that you’ve made me reflect…12 hours a day sitting? SO SAD. Ok time to make time to get up and move.

I need to get better about moving during my work day. I take a 40 minute bus ride into SF every morning, walk a mile to work, then sit for about 8-9 hours, followed by another mile walk back to the transit center, and another 40 minute bus ride home.

I sit in front of a computer all day, and I find myself always sitting crossed legged (aka indian style, so that is not appropriate to say anymore)

Oh man, I definitely sit pretty much all day at work, in front of a computer. I do try to take little walks to go talk to people (vs. emailing them) which I think helps a little.

I only have a 5 minute commute, but I’m at a desk for 8 hours. :-(
