Where my workouts come from and how far do you run playing different sports?

One of the many coolest parts about having a running coach is that I am emailed my exact workouts.  At midnight every night an email is sent to me about my workout for that day which means that I don’t even have to think about what I should do, it is all there for me.  Once I complete the activity I fill in my post-activity notes on the website so my coach can see how it went.

This morning I did the rowing and runners core video (it was about 11 minutes) but I am saving the pool running for tonight.  I am saving that workout for tonight because there are clouds in the sky and so that means my apartment pool is even colder than normal and heaven forbid I be outside in the rain so I will wait for Billy to get home so I can go to the gym to swim.

PS running was pushed back to Saturday just to be extra safe so now I am even a million times more excited for this weekend.

How I don’t get bored on the rower:

IMG 8473

I just set my iPad up on the side of the machine and watch an episode of Glee.  PS I am still trying to convince Billy (he isn’t convinced?!) that I need to buy a used rower on Craigslist to put next to my treadmill because it really is a great total body workout.

I am loving leftovers.  It makes my super hard life so much easier;)

My beloved cereal was eaten moments later.

I saw the coolest article HERE about how far people run playing different sports.  Anytime the word run is in the title of an article, I read it.

Picture from back in my football days, I know you are impressed with my guarding skills.  We won.

DSC 3137

Basketball– Luol Deng was the NBA player that averaged the most amount of running per game during the 2012 season and he averaged 2.72 miles per game.   Most of that sprinting.

Football–  The average NFL player runs about 1.25 miles per game…. some of them get going pretty fast though.

Tennis– Most players will run about 3 miles in a 5 set match but some players have even ran more than five miles during the 5 sets.

Baseball– They said that an outfielder that chases balls doesn’t even break half a mile during a game.

Soccer–  Most players average about 7 miles a game but have also been tracked to run in one game as much as 9.5 miles.

I guess that means we are all pretty hardcore since we run so much:)  We can run farther than those NFL guys that get paid trillions of dollars to play.  Us runners, we are awesome.

I forgot to tell you that Brooke got herself a new car seat from Graco!  They like her.

DSC 0745

She can’t wait, she has kind of outgrown her old one.  It is the My Ride 65 LX and she will still be rear facing but then when she is old enough it is a forward facing car seat too!

I have a run coach right now who is super helpful! I love that its tailored to my body and needs.

I played softball growing up and did all sprint running for it and hated running at practice. Little did I know I’d try distance running years later and fall in love.

You have to convince Billy to get you a rower. I am so happy I have mine at home. The concept2 has such great reviews and most people never want to get rid of theirs once they own one. Those taquitos look delicious and precious Brooke should be a baby model!

Reply

I am so intimidated by the rowing machine.

I like your tie-dyed eggs!

Such s great photo of Brooke!
I can’t run right now and pool ran for the first time in years. I actually enjoyed myself!
My workouts come from my brain and my body telling me not to do something! I should be following a plan I made for my ironman in 11 weeks, but my body won’t allow it right now!
Enjoy that run this weekend! I’m sure it’ll be bliss!

Reply

I agree, you definitely need a rower. Billy, get the wife a rower!
I’m a tennis gal! Tennis requires a lot of running… love it!
Workouts come from my heat. Whatever my little heart desires that day.

I was super surprised about the running stat for a basketball player. I thought it would have been a lot higher.

Little Brooker is just growing so big. I love how many photos you post of her.

She is so cute!!! I get my workouts from my running coach. It takes so much stress off of me. I love it!!! I played softball in high school and college. We did a lot of sprint and speed training and weight lifting.

Reply

Wow great workouts for the day! My workouts come from a combination of my brain and a schedule. In high school I ran x-country and track, but my main love was show jumping (horseback)!!

Forgot to answer the questions!
I liked Glee when it first started but my favorite shows right now are Game Of Thrones, Grimm and New Girl.

Right now my workouts come from Runner’s World Smart coach, but I hired a coach last week and she is getting a plan ready for me.

I did Cross Country is High school, so yea I got a lot of running from that sport ;)

Reply

Love Glee, I think my favorite character is Santana, she’s always funny.

I get my workouts from a coach as well. It’s great to not have to think up workouts isn’t it?

Reply

I REALLY want to try the rowing machine but I hate looking like a dufus trying to figure it out in the gym. Maybe I will go when I know it won’t be busy and give it a whirl!!

Brooke is so cute! And look at those bangs! :)

PS can’t wait to try your taquito recipe!

Im really interested in getting a coach, would love to hear tips on finding/choosing a coach!

Following a six-week-training schedule for my first 10k in May (I downloaded it from the Boston Athletic Association) =)

I used to play waterpolo in high school but only for fun, nothing serious!

Reply

I was a competitive cyclist from ages 11-21! It still holds a place in my heart. My husband makes our running schedule. He takes it from other schedules. I love it because it’s gradual increases.

Reply

I quit glee after the second season. I watched a girl watch it the other week though. Lol. I was on a treadmill and she was on the recumbent bike in front of me watching glee on her I pad, while holding a book that she wasn’t reading cause she was texting on her phone. Seriously. It amazed me for the entire 5miles I ran on the treadmill

I usually make up my workouts unless I do a video or go to a class. I love this new.gym because I don’t have to think. I just do what I am told and it is a great workout. I also followed your training plan when I did the marathon and it was great knowing exactly what I would be running each week. I should just start that program over again.

I did drill team in hs. We would run around the gym before practice and I hated it. Ha! But I still think dancing was a great aerobic.activity. baseball on the other hand…

Reply

My workouts come from me – whatever I feel like doing. Most of the time I’ll have a DVD or yoga figured out the night before (I workout in the morning, and trying to figure something out while I’m still half asleep is just too hard.)

I used to play basketball in junior high. That was the extent of my school athletics.

Reply

I actually asked my friend that about soccer when I was watching a game last weekend and I almost felt they ran more than 7, seems like I’m right! They’re just going up and down the field for 90 minutes!

Reply

My coach gives me workouts on certain days and let’s me do what I feel like on others. It works! In High school I played soccer and swam! One had a ton of running the other had none… Gotta balance life out a little bit :-)

Reply

I didn’t realize you had a running coach, when did you get into that? I was actually thinking about getting a running coach myself because I think it would benefit me versus running all willy nilly.

I would have never guessed about tennis players actually. That is so interesting about all the sports really. Soccer I knew must do a lot of running…not me when I played…I picked daisies as the goalie and as a defender. LOL

Reply

I’m totally going to post those stats. Also my 10k in May is giving away 5 pairs of Brooks as door prizes so even more incentive for me to run it. Anyone in the Seattle area should totally do it.

My workouts are at home with my weights. I’m resting my sore knee so can’t do much more. Oh and push ups and ab workouts. I feel like going back to basics, you know the things we learned in PE class in grade school. Everyone wants to do some new fad workout but I’m sticking to the oldschool!

Reply

Oh and I did Drill Team in high school and we would run, do aerobics and march for days. Marching is a workout!

Reply

I did water polo and swam in highschool :) I dunno how many miles that would add up to. ha.

workouts come from my brain and a little from a training plan and the TIU girls.

I have never watched an episode of Glee.

Reply

I actually ran Cross Country and Track in high school! It was so much fun! I loved it (especially since I’m spherically challenged and have no hand eye coordination). I also tried cheerleading during the winter season (failed miserably) and my senior year swam! I wish I would have done that all throughout high school. Loved it! (Go figure I swam distance!)

I’m hoping that I can eventually get a coach, but right now, I do all the workouts on my own. I taker them from a variety of sources and my own past experience and knowledge and hope that I don’t do something to completely lay me out!

Reply

LOL Before I started running, I played softball and volleyball. We had a warm-up each practice which was probably close -or less- than a mile. I DREADED it. It’s funny how things change. I always hated sprints in softball, though. My legs just never could go fast when I wanted them, too. Unless I was getting in trouble then the speedy Gods gave me super fast legs.

Reply

Workouts def come from a schedule right now–and I love it!

Brooke is just tooooo cute!!

I played field hockey & lacrosse in HS–both had a lot of running for sure!!

I ran track in high school … And played a little basketball in college (they desperately needed players and I was in shape because of the running thing!)

I am a carseat geek and love Sunshine Radians however I have heard good things about the my ride. In anycase I had to do a plug in about the rearfacing. Although many people turn their kids around at age 1, the reccommendation is age 2 and 30 lbs. We have teeny kids so my oldest was rearfacing until almost age 3 and so will my youngest. Our doctor told us that a step up in carseats is actually a step down in safety, so rearfacing to forward facing, booster to none, etc. We were in a car accident on Christmas 2 years ago. It totalled our car ( not our fault, other driver turned right in front of us, thought to be on her cell) but the firefighters did not rush to check on my 1 month old, they went right to my forward facing 3 year old. They said that rearfacing is so safe that they actually do not expect injury in most car accidents from kids rearfacing. My youngest had no injuries, the rest of us had buries, and some scrapes, my husband and I were in quite a bit of pain. The kids were ok, good carseats saved their lives. As a certified carseat geek, I just had to throw that out there. Oh and totally my hero for rowing, I can not do that both from boredom and I just can’t do it!

Reply

This is great advice. I also want to add that a child does not need to be moved to forward facing at a certain age – the AAP recommends maxing out the height/weight restrictions of your seat. In this case, the MyRide 65 is rear-facing to 40lbs meaning Brooke should be able to stay rear facing until she is 3-4 years old. Rear facing is the absolute safest position for your child to ride in so you really should keep them that way as long as the seat allows.

There is a great group on Facebook that is run by Child Passenger Safety Technicians called Car Seats for the Littles and they provide awesome information as well as running a separate page for questions/answers – https://www.facebook.com/CarSeatsForTheLittles

Reply

Thank you so much ladies! That is what I love about the my ride! Up to 40 lbs for rear facing kiddos!

Reply

You will love the MyRide 65! That’s what I moved my youngest son to when we stopped using the carrier. I kept him rear facing until he turned age 3 and he still had plenty of leg room in that position. We still love the car seat now in the forward facing position.

I’ve never seen Glee before.

Right now my workouts come from whatever I feel like doing but they are loosely based on a schedule my running club has on their website. I tweak it around a bit to meet my own needs but do my long runs with them now (:

In high school the only sport I did was track, so yes I did a lot of running (:

Reply

My workouts come from my brain… but they’re not anything too crazy or exciting. Just fun ;)

I played volleyball in high school :D until i dislocated my knee :'(

Reply

Yay for volleyball, boo to the dislocated knee.

Reply

I’m not really into running but when I played Ultimate Frisbee I did not but run. I’m curious to know how much I ran a game…

Reply

That’s a great article that you found about running distances for different sports. The only sport I participated in during high school was track. I plan my own workouts since I’m a trainer.

Reply

I’m trying to convince my husband we need a row machine too. It’s not going well.

Reply

I played volleyball and still do! Definitely no running there, but I did play soccer for three years during high school :)

Reply

I love making up workouts or finding them on other blogs! I think it would be great to receive a email with them all planned out for me though.

I was never really into any sports other than running. I played netball when I was much younger but during the games I talked to my best friend much more than I ran :)

Reply

Wow, hard to believe that she’s already grown out of her other car seat! Time goes by too quickly!

Reply

Right now my workouts come from a coach but my favorite workouts are long runs and Zumba. It’s just so much less stressful when you’re not doing interval work 3 days a week but I do appreciate having someone design my workout plan for me.

Reply

I played tennis when growing up, but it was doubles, so I think I ran a lot less than the singles players.
I’m going to try to play it more during the summer because it adds the lateral movements that are kind of lacking in just running.

Reply

I played soccer all through college. I definitely think that in some of the tougher games in college I would run upwards of 6+ miles. I played defense and outside mid, so I just ran up and down the field all game long.

Reply

Soccer is killer! I can’t believe how much running is involved. The first time I went to a game I was SO impressed. You all kick some major butt!

Have you seen the quote, “my sport is your sports punishment”? It’s one of my favorites- makes me feel pretty hard core.

Cross Country and Track in High school!!
I had no idea you could “hire” a coach! I miss being told what to do/run!!! I get so tired of having get creative, or when i am not, which is most of the time, running the same routes or the same speeds, etc.
I want to be challenged/pushed!!
please some one let me know where to find a “coach”!!

I’m a Glee fan, but I mainly just care about the Rachel Berry storyline. I tend to fast-forward through the songs because I can’t handle all the cheesiness sometimes. For workouts, I usually look through my Pinterest workouts board or just make one up based on what I’m feeling.

Reply

I played softball in high school (from 8-20 years old). We would have to do running workouts, but I hated those.

Such interesting facts! I just quizzed my husband on them, haha. Happy to hear you’re close to running! Can’t wait to follow your progress again :)

I create my own workouts, but that’s my job! I am a coach/personal trainer/group ex instructor. I train/teach at 7 local gyms, but I also do a lot of virtual training. LOVE my job!
I have never seen Glee! I know I will prob love it if I watch it, but I am a reality TV fan.
I was a dancer and cheerleader in high school and while those sports didn’t require much running during the events/games we had to run 2-5 miles a day before practice. I am so thankful for that now–running after school has become a habit for 10 + years!

Reply

I loved that article, I made my husband guess the distance (he is a huge sports fan). He did really well! I played golf in high school. No running at all! Lots of walking though! I am training for a 1/2 right now, and that comes from a schedule. When I am not training, typically just my brain and what I am feeling that day!

Reply

I’m not a huge fan of the row machine and it makes my body say, “ouch” every time I see it. Super impressed that you dig it. I used to do those similar workouts w/25lb plate presses in between. It was a doozy.
Oh man! Your lunch looks delicious and so pretty..hehhe

Great post! The one thing that this post has definitely made me do – give those taquitos a try. I saw the original post with the recipe and thought hmmm I could probably do that. Now looking at the picture again, I am definitely doing those (with guacamole!!) :)

My workouts come from my running coach who is amazing! I just haven’t been able to follow my plan lately because I have an injured hamstring. I keep re-injuring it because I just won’t stop working out and let it rest. I think it’s getting better, so I pick up the pace or do hilly stuff, and then I set myself back again….I’m just not a fan of much else besides running….so frustrating…

Reply

When I trained for my first marathon, I followed a training plan. When I am training for half marathons, I usually just do my own thing…various distances, a track workout, some hills, etc. I am super jealous that you just wake up and someone tells you what to do…this workout looks like fun, I want to do them along with you!

Question about the rower: I’ve been doing it a lot lately too…such a great total body workout. But let me tell you, it kicks my butt! I put it on level 10 and I am absolutely spent after 5000 meters. What level to you put it on???

Reply

My workouts come from my brain as of now. I do one long run and either a hill/speed workout and then easy/recovery runs the rest of the week.
In high school I only played basketball,as I’m a 6’0″ giant.
My friend just got an awesome new rowing machine and I somehow think that I am entitled to use it whenever my little heart desires. I’m thinking I really like it!!!!

Reply

I haven’t watched Glee in a while but Quinn has always been my favorite! I always thought she had the best hair and clothes!

I’m 20 weeks pregnant so my workouts are pretty low key these days…normally though they come from Pinterest, blogs, or workout DVD Russian Roulette :)

Reply

I played volleyball my freshman and sophomore years of high school and then I found running. I never raced in xc or track… but I wish I had!

Reply

Can I ask who you use as your running coach?

Reply

haha I ran cross country part of high school and college and track 1 year of each but as a race-hater I didnt really love it……I didnt mind practice, but race days I pretty much wanted to die. Now I just run for fun. Some days that means throwing a couple 6:30 pace miles in, some days that means running for a while at a 9+ minute pace. I was never much good at schedules haha (I was pretty much always on the “if you skip practice one more time you are off the team” list). My running was pretty much based on emotion.

Reply

My workouts come from my head but most are ones I did in college. So technically they are from a coach I guess. I think glee was so good in season one…. Since then I haven’t watched. My favorite character was Brittany… So loveable yet ditsy!

Reply

I gotta say….the picture of you playing football, I see a lot of Brooke in you!

Reply

Not only do I LOVE Glee, but I was able to get Mark hooked too (maybe there’s something to that for you and billy? lol) We both crazy-love Santana, and Mark likes Sam, whereas I’m more of a Blaine fan :)

I was one of the few kids who missed biting the soccer bullet, but I played some version of tball/coach pitch/softball from 6 to 18 years old, every summer like clock work!

I spy new compression socks in that last photo! Have you actually taken them off yet??

My workouts come from my training plan which came from my brain :)

In high school I swam, played soccer, and played field hockey. According to that article I did more running than I realized for soccer.

Right now I’m using one of the Hal Higdon training plans in combination with a mini tri training plan.

In high school I ran cross country, played basketball and ran track. LOTS of running in those. :)

I ran cross country in high school. Good times. Definitely a lot of running ;)

I used to watch Glee but after the first full season I just lost interest.

My workouts come from my head right now but I will start following a training plan soon for my upcoming races.

I played volleyball during highschool and college. I was a varsity back then, so, that pretty much occupied most of my workouts. It doesn’t involve that much running. But as far as I remember our trainings involved running around the school field grounds.

Right now my workouts are coming from Jillian Michael (shred), a 6-minute challenge (strength), my head (running) and the local running club once a week (went for my first time on Tuesday!).

I played softball in hs, but hardly ran if I could get away with it. I was so lazy!

I’ve always wondered how much soccer players run during a game. My husband plays is always exhausted when he’s done. What a fun article.

I cheered all through high school, so no real running for me. Well, unless we were in trouble and had to run the dreaded “lap.” Who knows how far it was, probably no more than half a mile. Haha.

Thank you for sharing your non running workouts, and for focusing on how important it is to rest to recover from injury. I am trying to use you as an example to recover from an injury, but it is so hard to not be able to run, I get depressed.

Can you share how long you have been not running? Have you been to PT? Is your coach instructing you on when to return to running? Please share, it keeps me sane :)

i played basketball and did track. surprisingly i ran way more in basketball. track i did long jump and triple jump. i was not very good. it was more of a social thing.

I’m using the SHAPE half-marathon training plan to decide my workouts right now as I train for my first half-marathon!

I played basketball from 3rd grade to senior in high school. I’ve ran since I was in 8th grade (my tiny little school didn’t have track!). I always enjoyed all of the running “punishments” in basketball practices (hello, suicides) and smiled a little when all the other girls were so out-of-shape at the beginning of the season but I wasn’t because I had been running year-round!

Reply

I played tennis as well :) I also played soccer growing up and for 2 years in HS! I went out for track for 1 day, but decided that it wasn’t for me so I quit, oops!

It’s hilarious because conditioning for my sports was my worst nightmare, I mean I would have rather done anything else in the world, and now I’m a distance runner 8 years later…haha gotta love it :)

I like leftovers too, which is good since that’s what I normally have for lunch at work haha.

I have to ask – with your iPad setup for the rower, doesn’t your neck start to hurt from being turned to the side? Or is it short enough that it doesn’t bother you?

Hi everyone! I loved your post Janae! I was a former soccer player turned HS/college/post-collegiate distance runner, so I can totally see how much running goes into other sporting competitions.

I wanted to pass on some info to some of your readers that I thought would help them a lot. As an online running coach at trainwithmarc.com, I find that a lot of runners think that every day has to be a hard day or they aren’t doing anything – WRONG! Most days in fact, should be easy. It’s only when you have a strong base of long, slow distance running that you should add speedier runs to your repertoire.

If any of your readers are thinking about a coach, have them send me an email, I’d love to answer their questions or even set up a training plan for them.

– Marc Pelerin

I’m a rower! I rowed in high school but have run since I can remember. Running took the side-lines during my competitive rowing, and I still row in college but now have more time to be a runner too. It’s amazing how well these sports interact with each other! They both condition you well for the other and work well as cross-training for each other. I love both so much!
