Brooke’s new favorite things to do.

The one bad thing about living in California is that soup season does not last very long since it is already hot outside (it is supposed to be 83 today).  I do not follow the guidelines of not eating cold foods when it is cold (hello, ICE CREAM must be eaten year round) or burning hot foods when it is hot outside.  Chicken Cream Cheese Chili with extra Tapatio for the win.  (PS I add a can of tomato soup to the recipe to make it a little more soupy)

This is actually one of my all time favorite dinners.  Just try it one time, I just know you will love it…. cream cheese is one of the main ingredients:)

Brooke’s two favorite new things to do:

1.  Play with dirt even though I bring out 50 toys for her to play with.

IMG 8148

2.  Eat Billy’s hair.

Okay, just one more thing that she enjoys doing: attempting to steal Billy’s cornbread.   I think she learned this trick from me.

Early morning spin class today and I’ve got my spin playlist ready to go.  I speed up my songs using Garage Band on my computer because I believe the faster the beat is the faster my spinee’s legs go….

I think the stair climber might need my attention for a few minutes after spin.

Song on your workout playlist that you have been loving lately?

Random question from last night inspired from my deep conversation with Billy:  Do you drink the leftover milk after you eat the cereal?

-YES, that is my favorite part… sugary milk.

Stir fry! It is soooo easy – http://abetteryeartoabetterlife.com/2013/03/12/dreary-day/!! Do you ever make gazpacho? That is probably my favorite all time soup and I will make that during winter or summer!

Brooke is learning the important thing in life fast! And YES to drinking sugary milk! That stuff is like gold around here we don’t waste it! Especially when you have a chocolatey cereal… yum. Lately we have been making a lot of pizza. I use alfredo sauce instead of red and throw whatever toppings on it that seem good that day. The Trader Joe’s dough is seriously to die for!

Reply

That chili looks DELISH! I’m going to have to try that. I firmly believe it is never too hot outside for chili. :-)

A couple of songs I’ve been loving during workouts lately are One Direction’s “Kiss You” and Calvin Harris + Florence Welch’s ” Sweet Nothing”. Both are super fast and upbeat to keep my legs moving faster on runs!

Reply

Florence is amazing to run too! I also love Ellie Goulding, a Pandora station with those two ladies is sweet heaven to run with!

Reply

Haha eating billy’s hair! Your playlist for spin is awesome! I need to go to one of your classes- I’ll just have to pay a gazillion dollars to get there.

Reply

thanks for the playlist! i’m always in search of some good songs!

Right now i’m a fan of figure 8 by ellie goulding, and gone gone gone by phillip phillips :)

That chili looks so good, I definitely need to try that. My go-to dish these days is either roasted butternut squash or eggplant parmesan. Both really easy and filling! I put the recipe on my blog for the roasted squash here:
http://liverunsparkle.com/2013/02/26/root-vegetable-obsessed/

Also, I always drink the milk after my cereal…Billy doesn’t?? lol

Have a great spin class!! :)

Reply

I make that chili quite often. I am making chicken and corn chowder tonight even though its not cold in the Deep South anymore—praise God!
I just finished teaching my first spin class of the day and my playlist was similar to yours! I added an oldie for sprints to do after Sail–Fuel by Metallica. Try it and it’ll kill your class! Super fast. I need to check out garage band! That’s news to me.

Reply

Absolutely drink the leftover milk! I am still loving Calvin Harris sweet nothing. I’ve been running to it for months and it still gets me going. Also really into catch my breath by Kelly Clarkson. I’m a sucker for yellow rice, chicken, black beans and veggies. It’s our go to meal.

Reply

I love to make pulled pork in the crock pot using the McCormick seasoning crock pot packet! My favorite workout song lastly is Feel This Moment by pitbull and Christina! And I absolutely drink all the cereal milk! Or keep adding cereal, which leads to adding more milk….vicious cycle :)

Reply

Love the playlist! I think my favorite song to run to at the moment is Matchbox 20 Put Your Hands up- love

Reply

I just finished off my latest batch of Cream Cheese Chicken Chili last night! After reading about your addition of a can of tomato soup, I started doing that too and I haven’t looked back! :) I also add extra taco/texmex seasonings (i.e. more cumin, garlic powder, paprika, a little cayenne, etc.) and I serve it with Tapatio and then top it like taco soup with crushed tortilla chips, shredded sharp cheddar or monterey jack, and sour cream. There’s a recipe similar to this one that I’ve been making for years that I absolutely love. If you’re ever in the mood for another great texmex cream cheese-based soup, you should definitely check it out: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-live/tex-mex-chicken-taco-soup-recipe/index.html

I also love these recipes because they’re like comfort food to me, but they’re also really easy to throw together on a week night (which is great for when I get home from work, lay on the couch, turn on Netflix, and then don’t feel like moving until it’s time to leave for work again the following morning!):

Creamy (Cream Cheese) Chicken Enchiladas: http://www.kevinandamanda.com/recipes/dinner/creamy-chicken-enchiladas.html

Mom’s Turkey and Peppers (Absolutely delicious over rice and super healthy to boot!): http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/moms_ground_turkey_and_peppers/

Thai Fried Rice [without the chicken]: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2008/09/thai-fried-rice-575-pts.html with homemade sweet and sour chicken: http://www.melskitchencafe.com/2008/07/sweet-and-sour-chicken-updated.html

And I definitely drink the milk that’s left after I’ve eaten my cereal–it’s the best part!

Reply

“Catch My Breath” is one of my all-time favorite Kelly songs! :)

Reply

You have the best spin songs! I’d go to spin more often if I didn’t have to listen to Billy Joel and Celine Dion in there (not conducive to a good workout).

Reply

Brooke is clearly ment to be a gardener in this life. I am so bored with all my dinner options, but your chili looks great. I might have to try that.

Reply

I absolutely made that recipe today and it is now officially my favorite chili. Thanks!

Reply

Who WASTES milk?! That is unacceptable :) OF COURSE you have to drink it!

Reply

I actually don’t like the milk in the cereal – I usually drain the milk off of each spoonful, so no, I don’t drink it!
For dinner I love spaghetti squash – http://runeatplayblog.com/2013/01/16/weigh-in-wednesday-dietbet/, and hummus pizza melts – http://runeatplayblog.com/2013/02/27/sweet-treat/

Reply

Brooke’s love of dirt may also be reinforcing your decision to go camping/backpacking last week. Perhaps just a friendly reminder or remembering the good times she had!

Our dinners are usually a combo of rice-meat-vegs, as the hub is a meat eater and I’m not.

I made lentil chili from WFM this week (with more vegs of course!) and it will be seeing encore presentations on our dinner menu-

It’s delicious!! The song I’m loving lately is this Stay remix… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7TZdue88bo

LISTEN! It’s so good.

Reply

Absolutely not! I’m not a milk fan at all!

Reply

Anything meat that can be cooked in a crockpot is probably what we cook the post often. We just throw in the chicken, pork, or beef, some broth, garlic, onions, and mushrooms, set it to low and it’s good to go when we get home. Paired with some rice and veggies…instant dinner. Well kind of

It is still soup season in northern Minnesota – as I look out my window we still easily have five feet of snow on the ground! I am totally over it!

Shoot, not sure why I cannot get this to link. But here is a total go to. It already made it into this weeks rotation.
I love the sugary milk so much my husband jokes, “are you going to have some cereal with that milk?”

Reply

Ok, it did link, I just needed to press submit.

Reply

thanks for the playlist! i’m listening to it at work!

Reply

I’m definitely not a seasonal eater either. Cold smoothies, ice cream, and fresh fruit are eaten in the winter, and hot tea, coffee, and soup are eaten in the summer. Some things are just too good to limit when they can be consumed.

And a definite YES to drinking up the sugary milk. I don’t tend to go all out crazy with how much milk I add to my cereal, but not a drop goes to waste.

Reply

That Chicken Cream Cheese Chili sounds amazing! And I agree, it’s never too cold for ice cream. ;) A regular dinner around here is something revolving around Mexican food – quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos, burrito bowls, fajitas, taco salad, you name it. We have at least one Mexican dish a week. The best part is that they’re all SO easy! And heck yes to the sugary milk after you’re done with the cereal!

Reply

OMG Brooke is too adorable.. each post just gets cuter and cuter!

Reply

Sandrine (for the recipe question): pasta with anything…this week it was pasta with shrimp and scallops; Rhonda (for the playlist question): Clique

They need to bottle left over milk from frosted flakes. I would drink that junk for dessert. I havent had cereal in a long time (please still be my friend) but when Evan doesn’t drink his left over milk, I totally help him for that reason. I know, right? I am such an unselfish mother!

I really need to try that chili. I have a chili recipe I make about 1x a month (that is a lot for me. I don’t like repeats) that is Anna’s favorite so I am afraid to change for fear I will suffer her rath (*whining) We make different kinds of homemade pizza a lot. Firecracker chicken, lots of different Thai foods, I made Greek pita’s last night -also a favorite.

Hope your spin class went well. You never did get back with me about me skyping in on your class ;) Have fun on your sweat climber. Still jealous of how many your gym has. Perhaps they would be willing to donate to my rec center so we would have more than 2 and I won’t have to get stuck on the elliptical wishing I could use ours but instead am shaking my fist and cursing at the lady who is using it wearing flip flops and going at a pace my children could do.

Reply

you must be an amazing spin teacher because your enthusiasm + playlist is awesome!!

One time when I was babysitting I took the kids to the park. The older one played on the equipment, and I sat on the grass with the little guy. He kept trying to eat the dandelions. No matter how many times I stopped him, he was determined to eat one. Despite the toys and snacks I brought for him.

That playlist looks killer!
I am soo soo bad about dowloading new music; syncing a playlist. I think after being on a computer all day at work, the last thing I want to do it go home and sit on my laptop and download music/upload to my ipod.

The recipe I make the most? Hmm, we make a huge batch of sauce/meatballs and freeze, and we have that once a week, so I would have to go with that.
But I love anything in my crockpot!

Reply

I LOVE to drink the milk. That is so delicious! Anything that Jessica @ howsweeteats is definitely going to be a repeat in my house. :)

Reply

I think I need to take your spin class! I love spin but their music choices aren’t always the best.

Reply

I love everything about this post! I am going to try that chili and soon. It is still soup weather in the NE, not that that would stop me:) I make a whole chicken in the crockpot a lot, or spaghetti with meat sauce (so fast and easy – just use a jar of sauce but add onion and garlic to the ground beef as it sautes and then a bunch of extra dried herbs like oregano and basil and it is really good. Lately I’ve been adding in cooked spaghetti squash to my plate to make it healthier, so like half real pasta half squash). Have you ever used recipes from annies-eats.com? I swear she has never let me down. Some of the recipes are pretty complicated, but with a little looking you can definitely find easier ones.
My favorite workout song right now is Don’t you worry child by Swedish House Mafia, the only problem is sometimes I sing along out loud even when I’m on the treadmill at the gym:)

No I can’t drink the milk after it makes me want to gag! Yum to chicken chili I made some similar to this over the weekend, yum!

Or jambalaya. And I like both of these because they product leftovers!

I don’t really have one favorite song right now.

I give the milk to DH. I can’t take too much dairy at one time. It makes me sad to give the Cocoa Puffs chocolate milk away.

I don’t like or eat cereal of milk, so that would be no.

Fave workout song right now is Some Nights by FUN. LOVE IT!!

Chicken Fajitas loaded with veggies we do at least once a week.
Cinema by Benny Benassi is my favorite!
I always drink the milk :)

My go-to dinner when I don’t feel like cooking is a baked potato topped with cottage cheese, sauteed spinach and mushrooms, and salt and pepper. Boring, I know, but always satisfying.

Messy Mexican is our most frequent go to. It’s our take on Chipotle and so fast and flexible. We eat that AT LEAST once a week (and probably tonight, haha)

I like to drink half the milk and then leave the rest for the boy, it gets a little TOO sweet for me (blasphemy, I know)

Reply

I only drink the milk if I have super sugary cereal. If it’s something like whole grain cherrios, I don’t.

Reply

I’ve been going to spin classes for three years now because I train for a 180 mile charity ride each spring and let me tell you that the spin playlist makes or breaks the class! This one looks perfectly speedy :) Thanks for sharing!

Reply

Hate to admit it but… I don’t drink the sugary milk! I think it’s nasty. Maybe I should bottle it up & sell it.

I’ve only done spin a couple of times in my life but you make me want to do more! But only if you were the teacher. ; )

Reply

Cereal milk is the best! There is a place in New York City that bottles it and sells it called the Momofuku Milk Bar. We went there last spring and I chugged it down it was so good, my husband thought it was the most disgusting thing though.

Will.i.am new song Scream and Shout has been my go to song lately.

Reply

Thanks for the music recommendations – and I know what you mean about Bay Area soup season. I’ve been eating loads of the stuff recently, although I also eat it year round!!

Reply

Always drink the sugary milk. I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the Cinnamony Sugary milk that is left behind. :)

Reply

If I had things my way – I would hae grilled chicken with a veggie and rice/mashed potatoes everynight. My boys don’t agree with me though. So I have to add variety into the schedule more then I would like.

I am loving a few of the Imagine Dragon songs – I am actually putting together my current playlist post now. Would love some suggestions!

Reply

I probably make stir fry the most. I just love that I can have every vegetable ever in one dish. I use Tabasco’s Spicy Soy Sauce which is amazing if you have never tried it, i definitely recommend it! I really love The Champ by Nelly (that will never go off my running playlist!), Some Nights by Fun. and One Foot by Fun. on my workout playlist right now. I actually don’t really ever eat cereal but when I do I make sure to put the right ratio of milk so there is never any left over. I know, I am weird!

Reply

I have been running to the soundtrack from the show Nashville. I am usually not one for country music but some of the songs are just too catchy to deny.

I make these black bean burgers all the time. I freeze the leftovers before I cook them and they’re so easy to reheat and put on a salad for lunch. Sooo good.

I have made that chili, it’s fantastic!

great playlist. i want to go to your class. i love that you speed up the temp of the songs. brilliant!

we eat a lot of tacos we makeup. it’s always delicious. 100% yes to drinking cereal milk! i grew up thinking it was wasteful any other way cause there is nothing wrong with it.

we will be trying that chicken chile recipe too:)

Reply

These days? Most made dinner = roasted chicken. But this changes frequently. I try to add something new to my cooking repertoire by making it sixty zillion times, until I can practically make it with my eyes closed. Then I move on to try something else, knowing I have a supply of “fall back on” meals that I can make.

[And don’t listen to anyone’s rules about when to eat – or not eat – warm or cold food. In Singapore, everyone sits in 90 degree humidity, slurping down steaming bowls of noodle soup. You are SO good in Nor Cal.]

Nah, I’m not so into that leftover milk.

Reply

Taco salad is my go-to dinner – easy and delicious!

I’ve been downloading Rock My Run mixes lately, but the one song I can put on repeat for a whole workout is Sail by Awolnation. Check.It.Out!

The leftover milk is the best part of eating cereal!

I lovehat chili – on my menu plan for Friday!!! Thankfully the soup seasons last a lot longer here in MN – 10 degrees this morning. Brrrrrrr.

Reply

Oh…I’m so going to try that chili! Quiches are one of my go-to recipes and this Spinach Bacon Paleo Quiche is one of my favorites.

I don’t have a go-to recipe right now as much as I am loving baked salmon, side of some avocado, and veggies. Pretty basic but adding different condiments and/or lime juice, bit of homemade mayo keeps it interesting. This past Sunday I bought from Costco a semi-prepared salmon stuffed with (faux) shrimb, crab and a little breading. Holy moly it was so good and filling.

Also, Brooke’s eyelashes look so long! Love!

I showed my friend that Cream Cheese Chicken Chili recipe and she has made it twice now and I’ve been invited over both times :) IT IS SOOOO GOOD!!!

And definitely YES to drinking the milk after the cereal is gone..that is my favorite part as well, and I always get very sad when my cereal is done :(

haha Brooke reaching for the cornbread is so precious!! We make Mexican the most, hands down. Juevos Rancheros (soooo easy! tortilla, black or refried beans, cheese, eggs, salsa and avocado) is a fave!

BTW, I am baking Brookies this afternoon. I’ll let you know what we think!

What recipe do you make the MOST for dinner? (Please include links if you can:)

Salsa chicken bowl. Its just a grilled piece of chicken coated in taco seasoning, its sticks great to the chicken! A cup of brown rice, some black bean, sliced avocado, and alot of newmans black bean and corn salsa! Sometimes I had shredded cheese or fat free sour cream…so good!

Song on your workout playlist that you have been loving lately?
All around the world – Justin Beiber featuring Ludacris!

Do you drink the leftover milk after you eat the cereal?
Yes, especially if its with chocolate cereal!

Reply

We have some variation of a quinoa dish every week – we are obsessed with quinoa.

I actually really do not like cereal milk (or milk on it’s own in general). I put minimal amounts of milk into my cereal bowl to just make sure everything gets coated and sometimes I even eat my cereal with a fork so that the milk can drain out. My boyfriend is the opposite…his cereal bowls are like 25% cereal, 75% milk.

Reply

That chili looks so good! I’m actually making white chicken chili for dinner tonight — it’s Jenna’s recipe: http://www.eatliverun.com/creamy-white-chicken-chili/. It’s so good and my husband always requests it, so we eat it pretty often!

I don’t understand people who don’t drink the leftover cereal milk, especially when it’s Cocoa Puffs because in that case you are just wasting chocolate milk and are therefore not human. Cereal logic right there.

Whenever I am home from college, I love to make Rachel Ray’s Chicken Parmesan Pizza Recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/chicken-parm-pizza-recipe/index.html). OMG. This is the best pizza ever. If you make your own dough, it’s even better.

Ugh. Now that I saw the picture of the pizza, I am craving it! Good thing there is only a few more days until spring break before I can go home and commandeer my parents kitchen and make as many pizzas as I want. ;)

That chili looks awesome! It’s still a little cold here in Maryland, so maybe I’ll whip some up over spring break.
