The best way to spend the day after a race.

Saturday night Brooke slept through the entire night and then when she took a nap at nine I got back into bed (very slowly because my quads feel like they were put through the paper shredder) and watched a couple of episodes of Parenthood.  I couldn’t believe how good it felt.  Oh yeah… my oatmeal eaten in bed was perfect for my lazy morning too (no, I do not measure my food but eating out of that makes it a lot easier to eat when you are lying down.  The handle is awesome).

Later on in the day we got in some good cousin time on the couch.  I cannot get over how much Brooke and my niece on the right look alike.

DSC 8915

For dinner we headed up towards Salt Lake City for a big family birthday party for my dad and cousin.

Brooke was finally reunited with Mer.

DSC 8924

Oh how I have missed the Sunday night food at my family parties (oh yeah, and I have missed the people too;)  We had mango salsa and spicy salsa, the best of both worlds.

DSC 8931

My cousin requested his favorite sloppy joes, roasted asparagus, fruits and veggies.

DSC 8935

After dinner we opened presents and our future cheerleader showed off her latest tricks.   It is normal to want your 4 year old niece’s leggings for yourself.

DSC 8938

Everyone’s interpretation of me telling them to do a creepy face.  The two in the back must not have heard me order everyone to make the face.

DSC 8948

It wouldn’t be a normal family dinner without five different choices of desserts for a total of 14 people in attendance.

DSC 8954

And last but not least, I caught Brooke giving my uncle the evil eye.

Are you sore anywhere?

-Just my quads but they are definitely feeling the hills from the race on Saturday.

Favorite veggies to roast?

-Broccoli and asparagus.

How many miles are you wanting to run this week?

Out of our desserts from last night, which would you have chosen to eat first:  Chocolate cake, lemon cake, carrot cake, chocolate lava cakes or date bars (oatmeal cookie bars with dates in the middle… a family favorite)?

Brooke and her cousins look so cute!!! My entire legs are sore from my half this weekend, but I really love that feeling! :)

Reply

Oh my goodness! Brooke and her cousin do look alike… a compliment to both! I would have dived into the chocolate lava cake, face first and I probably would have put my body up as a shield so no one else could get to it. :-) On a healither note, asparagus and red peppers are my favorite veggies to roast.

Reply

Ok kind of wishing my plane left without me so I could have come to your house and had those DESSERTS! My quads are also no bueno. And that’s the understatement of the year!!! So glad you are having fun with your family! And I miss you!!!

Reply

Wow Brooke really does look like your niece! The food at that party looks amaaaazing :D. Today is a non-run day (yoga and probably some Jillian Michaels). I may be sore after a 12 mile run I have scheduled for Wednesday though! I roasted some mushrooms for a homemade pizza last night, and chocolate lava cakes for the win!! My favourite!!!

Reply

Sounds like a great day! I would choose carrot cake…mmm. I’m hoping to run 28 miles this week :)

Reply

My core and back are a little sore from the trail hike I took yesterday.
I would take the chocolate lava cakes I think.
Not sure what my run plan is for this week. Waiting to see how my IT Band feels. It was sore after I ran on Sat.

How did Billy rehab his IT Band?

The Kidless Kronicles

Mmm, chocolate lava cakes! Your family sure knows how to do dessert:) The outside of my foot is sore from my long run on Saturday:/ Hoping it feels better soon so I can keep on training. Hope your quads feel better!

Reply

Looks like a fun family get together!! Love that your family thinks the same way as mine when it comes to dessert options :)

Reply

That picture of the creepy faces is priceless. The two in the back make it even better. Brooke knows how to give older men the stink eye already? uh oh. Lemon cake for me, please!

Reply

Brooke is so adorable!! I’m sore pretty much everywhere from an amazing core class yesterday morning but my larger concern is my left knee. I had some sharp pain at 4.8 out of a 5 mile run. I did a sudo ice bath – first ever – and that seems to help. I’m currently training for my first 1/2 though I did complete my first 20k trail race last week! I was originally hoping for another 13 by Friday to hit my first 100 mile month but I will have to see how things go. Hope your calves feel better!!!

Reply

I like eating out of mugs. Keeps your hand from getting cold/hot.

Chocolate lava cake is the clear choice!!

Reply

My quads feel like I got run over by a truck. Getting out of bed this morning will be a struggle. I want to be a part of your family. Mine doesn’t have so many cool desserts and we don’t make creepy faces in pictures. I might have to start that new trend because it makes me want to join yours even though I love my mom to death. Sign me up for a slice of chocolate lava cake!

Reply

I’m hoping for 50-55 miles this week. My quads are sore. I did 21.6 miles on Saturday which is by far my highest mileage day ever. Because of that it makes sense that I would be sore.

Reply

Carrot cake! Your Mer is ADORABLE.

Reply

Looks like a great post race day!!! :) Glad you got to see your fam before heading back home!!

Reply

i’m not sore, but defiantly tired lol zucchini, and squash are some of my favorite roasted veggies :) i really want to run over 27 miles this weeks!!! can’t seem to get over it lol

Reply

I am planning to run 20 miles this week – 8 of which will be a long run. I did hills yesterday & my legs hate me right now. Roasted cauliflower is my favorite!

Reply

My glutes are a little sore. I did a 10 mile trail run yesterday and got in about 1200 elevation gain on what I’m sure was only like 4 hills, ha. I’m hoping to get around 45-50 miles this week, but we’ll see if that actually pans out. I’m a huge carrot cake fan, personally.

Reply

My glutes and hips are really sore from a lot of strength training recently. I need to partake in some yoga!

My favorite dessert in the world is carrot cake so that’s what I’d do. I want to try a date bar though. Brussel sprouts are SO good roasted. I prefer all veggies roasted!

Reply

Chocolate cake always comes first…preferrably before dinner.

I love roasting broccoli and carrots!

Reply

I am super sore from a TRX class I took yesterday, it was awesome! I will probably do around 26 miles this week. Plus I am signing up for a marathon today! Sunriver Marathon in Oregon, very excited!

Reply

Isn’t it exciting to sign up for a big race? Woo-hoo!

Reply

Yes! I am excited :) It the last weekend in August and we are going to make a weekend out of it in Sunriver, plus its a reasonable price which is NICE!

Reply

Legs are tired. Shins are sore- time for new shoes.

I like all veggies roasted- but roasted cauliflower is AMAZING!

26 miles this week.

I’d have to try all the desserts- would have to depend on whether I’m in a chocolate mood or a fruity mood- I love lemon desserts!

Reply

I’m still recovering from a nasty cold, so all I aspire to this week is to run daily. Doesn’t matter how far.

Reply

The date bars sound delicious..would love for that recipe! :)

Reply

Carrot cake but ONLY if it didn’t have raisins in it!! After that, I would have to tackle the lemon and then chocolate!!!

The only place I am sore is my throat. Boo!! I am SO ready to be over sickness and able to exercise again.

Reply

I am so sore from yoga Saturday, so my entire body! Lol.
My favorite veggie to roast is probably Brussels sprouts but I rarely make them!
I would go with the chocolate lava cakes I think :)

Reply

Favorite veggie to roast (taste wise) is brussels sprouts. Not the best smelling by any means but definitely the most delicious!

Reply

My quads hurt from the 30 day shred, Jillian is killing me. OMG that Costco carrot cake! It is even better than the chocolate cake, and I LOVE chocolate :)

Reply

Sunday night dinners with my family are seriously one of my favorite times of the week… even if we usually one have 1 dessert as opposed to 5 ;) Having that many delicious options in front of my would definitely make things difficult, but given my extreme love for chocolate, I’m going to have to go with chocolate cake on this one.

Reply

Favorite veggie is asparagus and green beans. I am not running right now. I’m having an unwanted female visitor (tmi? Sorry). Chocolate lava cake would have been my choice, the previous sentence should explain that choice. :)

Reply

Carrot cake! I don’t think I’ve EVER had a piece that I would classify as bad.
Favorite veggie to roast is brussel sprouts. They do stink but Mmmmmm…so good.
I’m still trying to get my back (bad pinched nerve) back to normal. I did manage 40 miles last week but would love to get at least 45 in this week. Really trying to make stretching a priority. My chiro told me that he has 80 year olds that are more flexible than I am!!! If that’s not enough of an incentive to work on it then what is????

Reply

I’ve been reading your blog for like two months now and I love it. You really show your personality throw and I love how honest you are. :)

Reply

How do you get your photos to become that large and beautiful? is it just your layout/format?

Reply

You sure do have some cute kiddos in your family…your parents must be so proud. ;) All of the desserts sound amazing, but I’d probably go with the chocolate lava cake first!

Reply

I love carroty cake!! Roasted vegetable favs are probably mushrooms and onions right now!

Reply

Awww it’s great to see pics of your little nieces and nephew again, I’ve kind of missed them! And Curly has grown up so much since her last appearance on the blog!!

I am the sorest person ever today. Haha I laughed when I read that your quads feel like they’ve been through a paper shredder – that sounds about right to me too :) I ran a half marathon on Saturday too, but I kind of didn’t train (at all) for mine – no long runs, and not even a single run in over 2 weeks. Needless to say, it hurt REALLY badly, not a fun experience! Def won’t do that again. And I’m so freaking sore today!!

Reply

What season are you on now? I spent the last two weekends watching and I am on season 4 now (had to switch from netflix to NBC episodes–adding commercials is the worst)!

Reply

That sounds like a wonderful way to spend a day after a race. I would definitely choose the chocolate desserts, all of them=)

Reply

My calves are tight, my knees still don’t like standing, my quads have calmed down, my hip flexors are tight, my right erector is tight (odd!), and my traps are sore. That’s what you get for running an easy half marathon and then PRing a full marathon the next day!

Bell Peppers and Asparagus are the best!!

Reply

You’re a rockstar! My gosh! I’ve been toying with the idea of my first Olympic Triathlon in August. Any tips? I’ll have to visit your blog!

Reply

Easy question. Chocolate cake!

Reply

I ended up running a half between 2 races this weekend and my booty is killing me!!!

Reply

oh and thanks for reminding me it’s ok to eat out of a measuring cup :)

Reply

Raced yesterday…so a little sore in my shins, and my calves are in knots – but they only hurt if I try to Stick them out. Oh, ironies…

I looooove to roast potatoes, carrots, green beans, and onions, add some balsamic dressing and Swiss cheese and go to town. Delish!

Chocolate lava cake. Obviously…

Reply

I looooove roasted cauliflower

Reply

Oh man. My legs are pretty sore today too! Hills will do that to you! I guess I should have foam rolled more?
I think I would try the lemon cake first and then end with all the chocolate stuff! Yum!

Reply

I’m so happy that you are able to spend some more time with your family after your race, so sweet!

Reply

My favorite veggies to roast include peppers, broccoli, onions, potatoes, and Brussels sprouts (seriously so good, who knew!)

Reply

Do you have a secret to roasting brussels sprouts? I have never done it (or had them since I was a child). I’d love to try them again!

Reply

I just toss them with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper and roast at 425 until they start to get golden brown. So delicious!

Reply

You should try a little fresh parmesan with that mix….it’s to. die. for. :)

Reply

Oh that sounds like a great addition!!! Thanks for the tip!!!

Reply

I love broccoli, so yummy.
I think Brooke gets cuter every day!

Reply

Looks like you had a great time with the family over dinner.

I would definitely go with the lemon cake first!

Reply

My quads are sore from doing 6.5 in the rain on Saturday in my hilly neighborhood, followed by 3.5 on Sunday through the aptly named “Hillside Cemetery.” I seriously need to find flatter routes (and buy a foam roller)! I am doing about 18 miles this week… seriously can’t wait for my training to pick up. Love the last pic of Brooke giving the evil eye!

Reply

please post recipe for date bars!!! xo

Reply

Awww love this! I eat out of my massive Pyrex when I’m watching TV too. Not only do you have THE cutest child, but you have adorable nieces too. I ran the most beautiful trail in SF yesterday… and then did the Lyon Street stairs. I woke up expecting to be dyyyying of soreness but I’m strangely OK! Next time you’re in SF we are running this beach/coastal trail loop – the views are unreal!

Reply

I laughed out loud when I saw the measuring cup. I do the same thing with oatmeal and soup :) It’s just way easier than burning your hands on a bowl….or dirtying another dish!

Reply

We do the same trick with our kids on our hands. They love it.

Can your family adopt me? I don’t know any of them, but the food alone lets me know that it is a bunch of incredible people.

My hips are strangely sore from my run on Saturday.

Reply

I love all roasted veggies! It’s training week #2 for my 1/2 marathon and I think I’m running 17 miles this week (have to check). Definitely would have chosen he lemon cake!

Reply

Brooke looks so happy to be with your family!
Soreness – shins (minor soreness). I’m doing lots and lots of icing. This is a taper week so things should be looking up in a couple of days.
Roasted veggies – I’ve only ever roasted asparagus. Does this make me strange?
Dessert – Carrot cake!!!

Reply

Ooh I pick chocolate lava cake! Asparagus is my favorite veggie too. Adorable pictures. Glad Brooke (and you!) gets to spend time with family!

Reply

So, I have to know, how far have you gotten into Parenthood. I watched every season on Netflix during my maternity leave last year, so I am having a bit of nostalgia over here. Such a good show!

Reply

My legs and arms are so sore from a full body strength class (like body pump) that I went to yesterday! And you are so lucky to have such a close family, you’re making me want to start a Sunday night dinner in the future when I’m married with a family! I’d do it now but my family is in KC and I’m in Chicago…

Reply

My only goal for this week is to run more miles than I did last week…which should be super easy since I stunk it up last week. And also eat lots of roasted broccoli. It’s the absolute best :)

Reply

For some reason my back is sore – not sure what I did, though!

Cute pictures!

My knee is sore- major boo!! I am training for a marathon so that just better quit right now!

I love to roast broccoli and kale.

I’ll probably run 30 miles this week

I would totally eat the lemon cake first- my favorite! I gave up sweets for lent and it has been so so hard!!

Reply

WOW they look a LOT a like, you’re right!

I’m nursing a knee injury (as of this weekend) and had to postpone my long run. Needless to say…. I’m not the most fun person to be around right now. :(

If you’re interested in wearing a Wonder Woman tutu in a race check out the giveaway on my blog. Maybe Race Junkie (the woman who designs them) can make one for Brooke too! ;)

Reply

Definitely chocolate cake! Your family always has the best spreads!

Reply

Congrats on your awesome race!!!!!!! :)

Reply

My knees and ankles arn’t feeling too hot after a 6 mile run with my friend. I just keep praying… very hard that I will not get injured!

And carrot cake please! Sounds so good :)

Reply

Right Calf is sore from my 9 miler even though I stretched and rolled. :\ Luckily, nothing else aches.

The dessert choices all sound delicious. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I think I’d start with oatmeal, move to the carrot cake, pallet cleanser with the lemon and then hit the chocolate for a decadent end. :)

Brussel sprouts are by far my favorite veggie.

Reply

Hi! I just found your blog and LOVE it!! I also have a huge passion for running and am running my first official half this spring! You are such an inspiration and I love reading your blog!!

Reply

I always get your blog updates through BlogLovin, and the first picture always comes up underneath the title of the post. It always makes me laugh when I see you doing some crazy shenanigans (eating oatmeal from Pyrex measuring cup lol). I’m glad you are enjoying time with your family. I can’t believe you have so many different desserts! I wish my family did that.

I am planning on running 30 miles this week. Let’s gooooo!

Reply

im a little late but wanted to say congrats on your race! Marathon with a 2 in front of it, here you come!!!

Reply

I did an intense trail run yesterday and the trails were really sloppy so my hips and hip stabilizers are really sore today.

I love to roast sweet potatoes (they’re a vegetable) and cauliflower with some olive oil and salt and pepper

Reply

Brooke is looking more and more like a little girl, and less like a baby. I think its her pigtails that are making her look so grown up, adorable!!

I love roasting eggplant, red peppers, and red onions. Also, separately I love roasting butternut squash and sweet potatoes together with a little cinnamon sprinkled on top, its so good.

And I’d totally have the carrot cake at your family dinner…cream cheese icing is my favourite ever.

Reply

Oh my gosh, you back with the fam just makes everything feel right with the world!!!

My favorite is carrot cake for sure, but we had chocolate cake at a b-day party yesterday that stole my heart, and I had thirds.

Running miles? Nothing major at the moment……maybe 20 for the week.

Reply

My calves are sore from my Saturday & Sunday runs. Brooke is absolutely adorable, just like the other beautiful cousins!

My goal for this week is 22, it’s my drop back training week before my half!

Reply

Brooke looks like the Gerber baby!! You seriously need to get her into some sort of commercial or something…shes the prettiest baby I’ve ever seen!
The paper shredder comment made me cringe! Eeeek. ;-)

Reply

I agree….. I mean, all babies are cute, but Brooke is really exceptionally beautiful! She is truly the prettiest baby I’ve seen in a long time!

Reply

I’ve eaten out of a measuring cut too. Too funny!

Reply

I love her pigtails!

My chest is sore–from a lot of chest presses & my glutes are gonna be hurtin’ soon too ;)

Those desserts look ahhhhmazing!

Reply

I laughed when I saw your oatmeal picture. How can something so delicious photograph so terribly? I’m not taking a dig AT ALL at your photography skills. It just never looks as delicious as it is. And 4 cups of oats does sound delicious:)

My husband always looks at my breakfast with digust it looks so bad. More for me.

Reply

Sounds like my extended family… almost more desserts than people in attendance. :) I’m catching up on blogs- need to go back and read the race recap!

Reply

LOL.

OATMEAL!!!!

Looks like you all are having a blast :) Loving that cheerleader move! What balance!

Reply

Congrats on your race! As for being sore, my Achilles are sore from my race on Sat, but my whole body is achy from this stupid virus I’ve caught. And I’m a sucker for carrot cake– we had carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for my wedding and a lot of people thought it was unconventional– is it?? Anyway- just know that I drooled over your pictures! Have you heard back about your audition to teach spinning??

Reply

Your family is fab – I am a bit jealous of your food parties! Especially the five dessert bonanza!
I did an abs workout yesterday for the first time in a *while* so am suffering a little bit for it today :)

Reply

I’m DEFINITELY feeling the soreness from my half yesterday. The hills were brutal so my quads and my hamstrings are tight tight tight.

I’m hoping to take a couple days off and ease back into running, so probably around 15 miles for me this week.

Roasted broccoli and CHOCOLATE desserts! :)

Reply

chocolate lava cakes all the way! NOM!

Reply

Ok this may be a stupid question but how do you roast your asparagus? what do you put on it?temp?time?

Reply

Quads are burning from my race yesterday! I’m not sure I’ll be running this week, but I am hoping to get in some cross training! I would probably eat the chocolate cake first..and my favorite veggies to roast are zucchini, asparagus, and potatoes.

Reply

I ran the Ragnar Del Sol this weekend and my legs had a lot of downhill so my quads are killing me today! Definitely no running for me for a few days. The experience was totally worth it though!

Reply

You are such a rockstar! I need to get more hill workouts in, tried intervals on treadmill today at a 2-3% incline which is a baby step I get. Do you love the CEP compression socks? Looking to get a new pair! Thanks :)

Reply

I’ve definitely eaten out of a big glass Pyrex measuring cup before, too. You’re not alone there! Soup, oatmeal, cereal, leftovers…it happens.

Reply

That is one sweet dinner. And extremely impressive at that.

Reply

Are you sore anywhere?
My butt!

Favorite veggies to roast?
Carrots!

How many miles are you wanting to run this week?
34 is my goal mileage by Wednesday. Then 15 for my long run this weekend.

Reply

I do have to say, that I am kind of excited to see that someone else eats as much oatmeal and out of something completely awesome just like myself =)

Reply

cauliflower is sooooo good roasted

Reply

I have always thought that Brooke super resembled your nieces. How nice to see your family! I was really excited for you when I read you were going to spend time with them :)
