The hilliest three miles of my life.

So there is this little trail by Stanford called The Dish.  I picked up my friend (that I met while doing a semester of college in Hawaii) and we drove on over to what I thought was going to be an easy run.

IMG 7449

This picture does not do it justice.  This was the hilliest three miles of my entire life.   There were no flat parts the entire time.  I didn’t know these sorts of inclines actually existed.

Don’t mind the tape that I use to keep the flap on the jogging stroller.

As we passed by a cute older couple they commented that my baby was running too… Brooke’s little feet were kicking so fast for 95% of the run.  I think we have a future runner on our hands.

I was far too tired from the run to actually prepare a lunch myself so I picked up a salad and greek yogurt from TJ’s and made Brooke pose with it.

And then she started talking to her feet and got mad that they didn’t talk back.

On a random note (like usual) did anyone watch the Lance Armstrong and Oprah interview? What are your thoughts on the whole situation?

Mom,

I miss watching Oprah with you after school everyday in high school.

I did watch the Lance Armstrong interview last night, and I’m tuning in again. All I can say is… that smooth talkin’ Lance. He’s a great liar.

Reply

I LOVE walking The Dish, but I always look at the runners like they are crazy (which they are, in a good way!) Congrats on conquering it, as it is no joke (to run or walk).

Reply

Friday night involved babysitting my nephew and watching my son. Definitely will be interesting having two rather that one… good practice? Tomorrow we are going to a wedding!!! And then Monday (I know it’s not the weekend but it’s still exciting) I am meeting with my old high school running coach to work out a marathon training plan. My last one convinced me I needed to actually train and try to reach my potential! Last question… no I have never watched Oprah. Said no American ever. Sorry this is a novel I doubt you are still reading but I’m glad you had a great hill workout with a friend! Tell Brooke her feet not talking back is prep for marriage… you talk and no one listens or responds. Ok I’m really done now!

Reply

I hate hilly runs, but at least you had brooker and your friend to run with you! How could she not be a runner? She has you for a mom! I’m off to Zumba for the night followed by homemade crack n cheese (Mac in cheese to normal people)

Reply

I’m over Oprah… I saw a little of Lances interview and I was bored!
The most exciting thing about this coming weekend…. we are taking the kids to Duluth, MN waterpark.. It’s going to be -4+F so I can’t think of a better way to stay indoors and warm!

Reply

We’re headed there in March for little bit of spring break (to the waterpark, not on Oprah)! Have fun!

Reply

I love the DISH! My boyfriend and i have done it a few times. He is 6’4″ though and i am 5’2″, so needless to say that he goes up those hills way faster and i rested a few times, but its a great workout! :)

So cute that Brooke is talking to her feet! :)

Reply

Tonight I am going to dinner with my boyfriend’s brothers and their wives (that’s a mouthful, but I love it :)), and tomorrow I am going to a church conference featuring Carol Kent, I’m excited! Have a great weekend Janae, Billy, and Brooke!

Reply

Sounds like the perfect weekend!!! Enjoy!

Reply

AWww I just love Brooke- she is so cute… funny story, I’m at work right now (hard at work, I know) and a coworker came by and I showed them the pic of Brooke and said how cute is this baby??? They thought she was super cute and asked if I knew her.. I said sadly no, but I just think that she is adorable.. Not sure if that’s creepy or not haha!

Reply

Definitely not creepy! Thank you so much!

Reply

omg I miss oprah after school too! And I didn’t get to watch it, I was traveling, I would have!

Reply

I’ll be at my mom’s house this weekend and there are a lot of hills in her neighborhood and in the general area. I’m actually kind of excited to try something new.

Reply

The Dish is awesome! I try to run there every time I am at my grandparents. You’re right, that picture so doesn’t do it justice. So excited that you ran there!

Reply

I watched it. Heartbreaking. It was so sad to watch. I don’t understand how someone can lie for so long. But now everyone wants to crucify him. I don’t like that either. Just sad.

Reply

My friend and I are meeting at my at 10am (I’m only about 1.5 hours from you) and we’re running around my ‘hood. Come join us!!

Reply

I’m not doing much tonight. Boooooo!
Tomorrow night I have plans for dinner with several friends and then going to a birthday party that’s going to be held outside in the freeeezing cold. Not a fan of cold weather but I’ll enjoy the company.

I miss watching Oprah too. She had some good shows.

I’ve heard about Lance admitting but I don’t know details and have not been following it.

Have a great weekend my friend!

Reply

The Dish! I live so close to Stanford, my fiancé goes to their business school. I haven’t run the dish yet, but you should check out Windy Hill Preserve for a good trail run or at least a hike :) beautiful. My favorite trail so far.

Reply

That DOES look hilly!

Awww love Brooke’s outfit. Such an adorable baby <3

I watched a short segment of the Oprah/Lance thing. All I can say is it's SO sad people go to such lengths to lie & cheat. It's horrible–even if others are doing it. We should know better!

Reply

I used to watch Oprah with my mom all the time too :) I was seriously kind of bummed when she ended the show because I have so many good memories of watching it with her. As for this weekend, hopefully a trip up to the mountains to do some snowboarding will be involved. Happy Friday, Janae!

Reply

I can’t wait until my little 8 week old discovers her feet. Right now she’s in the whole hand/fist stage! Watch the Oprah interview while making cookies…that’s the proper way to watch TV, right??

Reply

I) Your running pictures are awesome and inspirational. One of the reasons why I’m getting back into running is because I read amazing blogs like yours every single day. Thank you!

2) Brooke looks like such a sweet baby. =) Her pictures are adorable.

3) Lance Armstrong can SUCK it! He’s such a disappointment, and his interview seemed really .. I don’t know .. Sociopathic to me? He seemed completely detached and not sorry for anything.

Happy Friday!

Lance is not a good person. He is a bully, a liar and full of himself selfish prick. He ruined so many people’s lives (financially, emotionally, career wise) – whoever decided to stand up against him and tell the truth was destroyed by his legal team. How could he not remember how many people he sued? Sadly, most of those people were his close friends one time. I am shocked he could find so many people to call friends in the first place. He is evil and karma is a b*tch.

Reply

sooo…tell us how you really feel. ;0 j.k! couldn’t agree more! And I was once so in his corner! How naive of me!

Reply

Hehe was it too much? ;-) One thing I may add is: he has this weasel face and his eyes…they tell a lot. And it is not good. Sometimes you can just tell when someone is a good person when you look into their eyes.

Reply

I can just see her legs a going now. I love her.

I have only watched Oprah once. Ever. When Stephanie Neilson was on. So I watched it for her and not Oprah ;) I probably don’t watch her because my mom is such an Oprah follower. Seriously. Anything she says to do, my mom will do/buy/believe it. Regardless of what she believes/needed to buy/etc. Ross used to joke that he needed to find a way to get Oprah to say the cool thing to do is buy your son-in-law a new car. lol. I might go back and watch the ep. I was with a bunch of friends for book club and treats last night. So fun.

No big plans tonight. But tomorrow we are having a girls night with my mom, sisters and all our girls. Dinner and then Utah gymnastics competition. Then Sunday we have to give talks in church (ack) and then head up to the parentals to celebrate my sister and neices birthday. Should be fun.

Way to go on your run today! You are amazing! I am not really looking forward to another long run on a treadmill at a crowded gym tomorrow…but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do!

Reply

Aliana does the running in the stroller thing too (and in the car). I think she gets a better work out than me and she isn’t even walking yet. She would totally love Brooke. We all look at her pics together and Aliana yells baby and tries to kiss her.

Reply

That is the cutest thing I have ever heard!

Reply

Good job owning those hills. I hear the’re pretty gnarly.
Hiking (not running lol) has been on my to do list for a long time now. Better get out there before summer. I hear there’s not much shade?
Lance…I can’t even….

Reply

I blogged about some of my thoughts on the interview, but basically they’re very mixed. It’s the first time I’ve ever watched Oprah with my husband though, he’s a huge cycling fan.

Hily run + jogging stroller = you’re amazing!!

Reply

Wow! Way to knock out the hills with a stroller!! I am an awe.

Friday night: work then a 4 mile jog (at 10pm). Gotta squeeze the miles in, right??

Reply

Whoa yeah I’m good just running on a flat surface for now. Glad Brooke is loving the jogging stroller though!

Reply

I was already disappointed in and over Lance but I think the biggest thing to come out of the interview will be Oprah’s big comeback. Maybe a few people will actually start to watch OWN??

Reply

I think I’ve run that trail.

And, I thought the interview was fascinating. Not, like totally heartfelt, but fascinating.

Reply

maaan, I used to watch Oprah EVERYDAY after school with my mom too. Ahhh. I miss that :)
Check Brooke all flexible now haha!

Reply

Loved the interview. My thoughts toward Lance haven’t really changed but man, it really made me realize how much I miss my girl Oprah. I don’t understand why OWN doesn’t just show 24 hours of Oprah repeats; how could that not make for a successful channel?!

Reply

I never watched Oprah regularly, but I’d always turn it on if there was someone I really liked on the show. The most exciting thing about my weekend is my dad and sister are coming to visit!

Reply

My Friday night plans are to sit on my couch and watch reruns of How I met Your Mother because I am absolutely EXHAUSTED. But tomorrow I’m going to get brunch with two of my favorites!!

Reply

Pics never seem to do the hills justice. I plan on catching up on the Armstrong interview that I’ve yet to watch. I didn’t know Oprah even had a channel, and it turns out I don’t get it anyway. To the internet!

Reply

I watched Oprah allllllllll the time. I am so sad about the lance story. I really wanted his story to be true. It was such an inspiring story for cancer patients.

Reply

Have you ever done a post about your makeup? I really think you should. I’d love to know what you use.

Reply

That is a great idea! I totally will!

Reply

Love Lance. Always have, always will. He screwed up yes. But he’s also done a lot of good. He was and still is a flipping strong athlete. Oh how I miss watching Oprah after school with my momma!

Reply

I am extremely disappointed in Lance. I really wanted to believe he was innocent. I wanted to believe he was an honest rider and champion athlete – especially after all he went through with cancer. It’s just too bad. That last note to your mom made me smile :) I used to watch the morning news before school with my mom in high school. I miss those times!

Reply

Brooke is ridiculously cute!!!

Reply

I just ran a 5K around the South Lake Tahoe neighborhood that we’re staying in for the weekend. It was relatively tough because of the elevation or the fact that it was much chillier than in San Jose!

Reply

I just hate it when I run a mean hill and the picture doesn’t do it justice! There ought to be a “hill” option on the phone for pictures like that so they come out looking like they felt!
My husband isn’t ready to watch the interview. He’s upset with Lance’s ‘everybody was doing it and I was leveling the playing field,’ comment. We have it on our DVR. We’ll probably watch it eventually.
I’m sure your mom misses you, too :)

Reply

Personally, I kind of don’t want to know too much about the Lance Armstrong thing. I think it may disgust me too much to know the truth.

My friday plans are to watch Four Wedding and Shark Tank then call it a night! PARTY ANIMAL right here.

Reply

Friday night plans involve watching Lance and Oprah…. still can’t believe he lied about everything!

And I really, really miss watching Oprah everyday!

Reply

Our friday night is watching the Lance Armstrong interview and I’m honestly not sure what I think. I think it’s amazing the delusion he seemed to have painted for himself and how much he seemed to believe it at the time

Reply

Friday night is looking pretty mellow…yawn.
What sunglasses do you run in? I need a pair soon.

Reply

I don’t care for hills either, I can only do about 3 miles of them-then I’m ready for a nap. Regarding Lance-I’m really disgusted with him, because I believed him up until the bitter end. He should have just told the truth in the beginning. Though my son said something funny about it-“It’s like he said he was on Team Gryffindor when he was really on Team Slytherin.” lol! Am I the only person in the world who doesn’t like Oprah??

Reply

I looked upto Lance once. Had the Livestrong gear & yellow gel bracelet. First doubts were with the Outside article a few years back. Reading the USADA report was the nail in the coffin. Honestly, the doping and the PEDs don’t bother me as much as I think they should. What steams me more is how casually (and in the interview somewhat sociopathically) he would intimidate and seek to ruin those who he knew were speaking the truth; be it the Andreaus (watch the CNN clips of her after the interview aired), his former masseuse (he hinted that she was unprofessional and was looking for personal relationships), that reporter from the Times of London (I’m guessing they want the $500,000 they lost in a libel suit back), and a host of others. If you have enough stomach for it, read the USADA report and you’ll see just how deep the delusion and conspiracy went. I’ll still donate to cancer research, but now it’ll be Team in Training/LLS and the American Cancer Society.

Reply

We’ve hiked the Dish, it’s a flipping killer!!! I quite fancy running it, now you’ve mentioned it. I can’t believe you did it with the stroller…you’ll get an amazing bottom ;)

Reply

It took me some time to get the courage to post… but I want to say that I just LOVE your blog! Seeing Brook brightens my day!

I would love a post about core work in relation to becoming a strong runner. I’m a very very new runner, but it seems like it would help to have strong abs. Do to have a core work program you typically follow or recommend? Also, if you could maybe talk about how pregnancy affects core strength? I’ve never had the blessing of having a child, but I’m looking forward to it some day, and I’m wondering if after having the abs stretched to hug the baby, does the abdominal strength just naturally gradually return or do you have to really work at it?

Reply

Awesome ideas!!!! I am so glad you commented! I will definitely so a post about this!

The most exciting thing about my weekend is a home inspection tomorrow on our new house! :) I watched the Oprah interview tonight, and wasn’t surprised by what I saw, a man without remorse, or a genuine bone in his body. So sad.

Reply

Friday night, I folded laundry. How exciting is THAT!
I used to watch Oprah. Until she attacked James Frey the way she did. He wrote the book. She believed it. And when she was wrong, she went on a rampage to destroy him. It was awful.

Tonight we ate left overs and went bowling.
Most exciting thing for the weekend is to check some stuff off the wedding to do list and hopefully going to an amateur comedy show at our local coffee shop.
I was never a consistent Oprah watcher, but if I happened to catch it I’d open it.

Reply

I LOVE The Dish! It’s my one must run everytime I’m in town. You can’t beat the views. Did you go left or right at the top of the initial hill? I find going left to be a much more pleasurable run. If you go right it just feels like constant climbing. Going left you get a few breaks.

Reply

Oprah is my hero- love that lady!

Reply

I miss watching Oprah with my mom too, good times.

Not going to lie – I’m pretty excited about my mint chip ice cream in the freezer that will be gone by the end of the weekend.

Hope you have a good one!

Reply

I don’t get the Oprah channel so I haven’t watched the interview. I recently read his book and really enjoyed it. As gossipy as this may sound I wonder if that is why him and Kristin split? Maybe she knew about it and couldn’t live with him anymore? (Huge fan of hers lol).

You rock those hills girl!!! So impressed that you push a stroller up hills. I hate hills and couldn’t imagine pushing a jogging stroller up one! Plus going down with one seems kinda scary…

Reply

Brooke yelling at her feet is my favorite picture ever :)

Reply

Mad that her feet didn’t talk back!!! Love it!

Reply

I didn’t watch the interview. But the whole thing is just sad and disappointing!

That is a really great article that sums up my feelings of disappointment about lance. :(

Reply

I did not watch the interview, but did listen to some of it on MPR – enough to be saddened. I really wanted him to be innocent. It is just so sad that we have these athletes that we (and kids) look up to and then find out they are cheaters. It just makes me so sad. Who can we believe in to be healthy role models?

Reply

Yay–you tried the Dish! This post totally makes me want to drive down there this weekend and run it again–so pretty! Well, it’s pretty if you have time to notice between hills! You are really are very impressive to RUN it with your stroller!

Reply

I didn’t watch the interview…but I used to watch Oprah all the time with my Mom after school :)

I don’t know what to think about the whole Lance Armstrong thing…you can excell at any sport if you work hard…I just don’t understand why athletes think they need to cheat. What kind of role model is that?!

Reply

oh my gosh you were legitimately right down the street from my house! I LOVE the Dish but it is SO HARD. If you go to the left first instead of the right it is even harder. BUT if you want more…there is a Dish Run on February 15th–only $15 with a sweet tshirt, super fun run! http://running.stanford.edu/

Reply

That’s awesome that she loves running(riding)! I’m sure she will be a runner too. I didn’t get to watch the interview with Lance but I’m hoping to catch it at some point. I must say, it looks like you’re doing a great job being a mom, wife and athlete. Very admirable and I hope I can do it one day too.

Reply

I love the Dish! I do it at least once a week (often on my lunch break). I always end up walking some of the hills though. I need to make a goal to actually run the entire thing without collapsing…

Reply

Your daughter is the cah-you-test thing I’ve ever seen. I have followed your blog for quite some time, now, and I must say you’re such a great Mom! Janae, you are awesome…..that is all. :-)

And for my 2 cents regarding the Lance Armstrong debacle….They are all doing it. Sadly, that’s what it takes to win. It just so happens that Lance was a viable target and source for entertainment. We are all naïve enough to think these medals are earned by hard work alone….that’s simply not the case. Lance was the target. So please excuse me if I understand his contempt at being the only person singled out in a large band of “dopers”. I’m not justifying it; just pointing out what probably actually happened.

Reply

Wow!! Thank you so much for your sweet words about Brooke! They meant a lot to me:)
It is so sad that it is such a huge problem in the bike racing sport!

Reply

I did watch the beginning of the interview – I was pretty surprised that he admitted to it right away, I thought for sure that they’d drag it out through the majority of the show haha.

Reply

yes, the Dish! I used to work right by the Dish, so I used to run that all the time. That was when I loved hills lol. That trail is amazing.

Reply

I run here at least a couple times a week. When I first started, I used to walk it, and it would take me well over an hour. Now, I can run those hills..not fast, but I’m running :). You can add in the back trail to add in a couple of extra miles if you’re looking to add mileage.
