Running Friends, Subway Pizza and A New Training Plan

Did I tell you that I blow-dry (on low and cool) Brooke’s hair?  She sits there perfectly as I do it.  I wash her hair 7 times more per week than I wash my hair (don’t do the math, you will think less of me).  Her hair is just way more fun to style and play with.

Screen Shot 2013 01 02 at 9 48 04 PM

We had to get Brooke all ready because she had some very important people to meet for her first time ever.

Nicole, Margot, Sarah and Pam!!!!!!!  It had been way too long since I had seen these besties of mine.

Pam suggest that we go to a new place called Pieology and I am so thankful she did, it was a winner.  It was kind of like Subway for pizzas.  You go through the line and tell them exactly what you want on your pizza and it was pretty cheap ($7.50) for a big pizza and unlimited toppings.

I went with the bbq chicken style of pizza.

DSC 5934

Billy went for the ham and pineapple theme (he admitted that my pizza was better, I take my food decision quite seriously).

DSC 5936

Pam also ordered a round of the most delicious cinnamon sugar bread sticks.  I secretly wish I ordered that glaze on my personal pizza instead of the bbq sauce.

DSC 5937

After dinner we walked around the Spectrum and the kids went on the carousel (Brooke was sleeping and Billy wouldn’t let me wake her up so that I could take her on it because he knew I was wanting to go on it for my own selfish reasons).

DSC 5940

We got hot chocolate too because it was a freezing 50 degrees out… ps in case you are wondering my thumb is not broken.

DSC 5944

I really love hanging out with bloggers and other running obsessed individuals.

I am really excited about this new book.  Pam has been telling me about this new plan/method that she has been using for her training and it sounds like it is exactly what I am wanting to use.  I found my training plan.

I just wanted to prepare you for the next few months of the new book that I will be talking non-stop about.

Where do you get your training plans from?  Has anyone else read this book?

How long does it take you to blow-dry your hair?  On average how many times a week do you wash it?

Is anyone going to watch The Biggest Loser this season (it starts on Sunday)?  What shows are you into lately?

I kind of do my own thing when it comes to training plans but I just recently started following one I found online. I rarely blow dry my hair bc it takes FOREVER! It’s crazy Brooke likes I my son is terrified by the blow dryer (maybe bc I never use it?) have a great Thursday :-) can’t wait to keep reading about your new training plan!

I love washing my hair but blow drying takes SO long…which means I usually wash my hair twice a week (I’m sure many are cringing at the thought)!

Reply

no way…this is my exact reply, too! I usually only dry once…but still only wash twice. I’m just lazy :)

Reply

I cannot wait for the new season of the Biggest Loser. I boycotted while Jillian was gone & am extremely happy with her decision to return.

I blow dry my hair every other day because it takes a solid ten minutes to do it thoroughly, and it feels like half an hour.

That pizza place looks to die for! I am going to have to do some research and see if we have anything like that in upstate NY.

Reply

That pizza place sounds soooo good! I can’t believe how big Brooke has gotten… that chair is so cute! I can’t wait to hear about your new training plan. I love hearing what works for other people so I can try some new training options for me!

Reply

That pizza place looks awesome.

I usually get my training plans from other people. My friend gave me the one I used for my last three races and the one I’m using now is from another friend.

In general, I don’t blow dry my hair because it takes forever and then I have to flat iron it, too. So I just go natural and curly. I wash it twice a week.

I am very excited for the Biggest Loser. I am especially excited that I’m going to be in Spokane then so I can have a Biggest Loser watching party with my sisters! We always have text message dates during the show. Now we can actually watch together. Yay!

Reply

I’m reading that book right now!! I followed the plan this fall and loooved it! I am not a big fan of 20 mile runs so the 16 mile max was great. It seemed to work out well and I got a 5 minute PR. I am so curious about other people’s success with it and can’t wait to read about your experience with it!

Reply

I get my training plans from a lot of different places. RW, Galloway, books, websites. and then I piece them together.
Takes about 10 minutes start to finish. I wash my hair everyday but I don’t always blow it dry.
I am going to watch BL, just for Dolvett. Right now we are catching up on some other shows like Shameless, Game of Thrones, and rewatching some favs like 24 and Big Love.
The Kidless Kronicles

Sounds like a fun time! I usually use Daniels’ Running Formula to create my plans… I’ve had pretty good succes with them!

Reply

Cant wait to hear what you think of that book! I used advanced marathoning last time around and loved it. I actually just got a coach, which I am super excited about, so he will be doing all the planning this time.
I blow dry my 5 year olds hair sometimes – you are right, it is much more fun to style their hair:)
Have a great day!!

Reply

my thumb does that, too! I’m double jointed in my fingers.

also, Brooke is awesome :)

Reply

That is so cute how Brooke sits and lets you dry her hair! You are going to have so much fun when it gets long and you can braid it! You might want to start checking out http://www.youtube.com/user/CuteGirlsHairstyles <– it is such a cute site and the girls are just adorable!

It takes me under 5 minutes to dry my hair – that includes styling. My hair is very fine, but long (waist length). I am a serious grease pit, so I have to wash it daily. I will admit to using dry hair shampoo occasionally if I just want to put it up in a bun.

I love the idea of Pieology! Why are they not EVERYWHERE!

Train? I just go run…

Have a great day! ;-)

Reply

I’ve never heard of Pieology but what a great idea!!! Brooke is going to have some fabulous hair! :)

Reply

I’m using the Hansons Marathon method, too. Got the book in October — love it. Hoping to BQ in May but it’s a very different plan than I’m used to.
Takes forever to dry my hair — I have a lot of it and it’s thick. Brooke is too cute sitting there while you do her hair!

Reply

I have really straight hair so I have to wash my hair every day or it gets greasy. Sometimes I can get away with skipping a day but I have to wear my hair in a ponytail. It takes me about 10-20 minutes to blow dry my hair depending on how wet it is when I dry it.

Reply

I have never watched the Biggest Loser before but for some reason am really wanting to start this season. I wash my hair 3 times a week. 4 if I am really trying to be fancy. I used to wash my hair everyday and I can see such an improvement in it now that I wash it less frequently. My hair is super duper fine so blowdrying takes about 4 mins. I have never followed a real training plan but am lookign for one now for my first half. Any suggestions?!

Reply

I am going to use the Hansons training plan for my next half marathon (since it’s been several years since my last one). I didn’t know they had a book!

Reply

Oooh another marathon/ running book I don’t have- adding to my list as I type!

I design my own training plans based on the 3 trillion books I’ve read and the class intstruction from the Athletics Canada coaching clinics I took. I like tailoring my plans to my schedule, needs and what I think works best for my body.

YAY for BL!!! So excited for my reunion with Bob & Jillian!! Is it sad that this event is marked in my calendar?!

Reply

Does anybody have recommendations for a blow dryer that doesn’t cost $$$ but dried hair relatively quickly? I have so much hair and now with a toddler and an infant I need to save as much time as possible!

Reply

I usually blow dry my hair 3-4 times a week!

So excited for BL to start up again!! yay!

Reply

I have used higdon plans in the past, but this spring I’m trying Run
Less, run faster the FIRST program. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Hansons!

Reply

I’m about to run a marathon next weekend and trained using the FIRST program. It has been great for building speed while allowing time for recovery after each quality run. At the beginning of the plan, the paces were just goals, but by the end, I was exceeding the pace. Good luck with it!

Reply

I blow dry my hair about half the time – depends where I am headed for the day. And seeing as whenever I leave the Fratboys alone for more then just a quick bathroom run – they seem to climb/jump off of something/break something, I don’t get a shower nearly enough.

SO EXCITED for BL!! I already have a draft blog post started just for sunday night / monday morning about BL. :) Can’t wait for Jillian back on there! From what I have seen on Twitter/Instagram – there will be some BL alum on some of the episodes as well. Should be a good season!

Reply

I’m so excited for Biggest Loser! Between Jillian’s return and the positive focus on obesity in children, I think it’s going to be a great season!

Reply

Pieology? Can you say Genius?! We have a million restaurants in Houston, but I’m sure we could make room for one more. :)

Thanks for sharing the book idea. I’m going to check that out! I’m currently training for my first ever half marathon, so I’m not sure that makes me a serious runner just yet. I’m following Hal Higdon’s novice plan.

Reply

Your comment about it makes me laugh a little because when I left for the gym this morning my car read -22 degrees. No joke or exaggeration.

Reply

Pieology sounds amazing! That’s a seriously great idea!

Reply

We have a pizza place like that called pie five. Love it!

Reply

Somehow I walk away hungry every time I read your blog :)

Any recos for training plans for building up to a first half-marathon? There are a ton out there, but would love to hear any preferences.

Reply

i get my training plans from my head :)
i don’t blow dry it completely, just enough so its not dripping wet on my back lol so about 5 minutes
6x a week, i have oily hair lol
yes yes yes!!!

Reply

I have curly hair, so on the days that I wear it curly, I only wash it with conditioner (sounds gross- I know). It helps keep my curls more in tact and doesn’t dry my hair out like shampoo does! But on days I want to flat iron it, I use shampoo AND conditioner… which is pretty much every Wednesday and Saturday :) it takes me about 5-10 minutes to difuse it and 10-15 to blow dry it straight. I HATE getting hot especially when I blow dry my hair, makes me grumpy. :)

Reply

I use Daniel’s Running Formula. So far so good! :)

Reply

I have heard SO much about that book and am very curious about it. I currently get my training plan from my coach who does an awesome job keeping me from overtraining like a dork and murdering myself! HAH! She really is the best :-)
It takes me about 20 minutes total to blow dry and straighten or curl my hair. And the world is lucky if I do that even once a week…
It’s so fun that you got to hanh with such an awesome group of runners/bloggers! I’m jealous!!

Reply

Jillian and Bob are finally back together. Just when I was going to stop watching the show. Reunited and it feels so good. Now I am going to have that song stuck in my had….and crave BBQ chicken pizza all day. What a fun night and that pizza concept is awesome!

I have never read that book. But I am excited to hear you thoughts and if you end up recommending that method after your marathon. I used your training plan for my 1st marathon and I really liked it. Running 3x a week and lower miles is all my body can take. Then I just cross train a lot. But I would obviously like a better finish time on my next one.

I probably wash my hair 2x a week. I know a lot of my friends think it is gross. But it takes me 10 min. to blow dry and 15-20 min to straighten and I don’t want to do that every day. Basically, I want to marry my dry shampoo. Best. Invention. Ever.

Have a great day!

Yeah what a fun meet up! Thanks for the reminder, I do want to start watching Biggest Looser again, I will set the DVR to record.

Reply

I try to wash my hair everyday because it gets greasy fast and looks weird if I don’t, but I do skip 1-2 days a week every now and then.

I wish it was 50 degrees here! On my commute to work this morning it was 9 with a wind chill of -4. Can I move to California too??

Reply

Brooke is so adorable. You are an AWESOME Mom. I try all the time to find a good training method but come up empty handed. I want one that includes nutrition. This is the year I move past 5ks! Oh! Thought of you at breakfast when I ate my FMW!

Reply

I really wish I had someone to blow dry my hair for me! I wash mine about 2-3 a week, and I think part of the reason is because I hate fussing with it when it’s wet. Biggest Loser… yes… can’t wait :D

Reply

I followed one of Hal Higdon’s plans for my first half-marathon, and since then I’ve just kept up with my own routine that keeps me in half-marathon shape. Three runs of three-six miles each during the week, then on Saturdays, a ten-twelve mile long run with friends. Unfortunately, while visiting my parents for the holidays, I haven’t run further than a little over six miles at one time, so I’ll have to build back up again.

I wash my hair almost every day, but I never blow dry it. I either wash it at night and sleep on it wet or get up early enough that it has time to air dry.

I’ve never seen the Biggest Loser. My fave shows right now are Happy Endings, Modern Family, Nashville, The Big Bang Theory, and The Good Wife.

Reply

I wash and blow dry my hair everyday. I have it down to a science so it takes the minimal amount of time possible now.

Reply

Yay for the Hansons! They are from where I am :)
And it takes me for-ev-er to blow dry my hair (super thick and wavy) and straighten it, so I do it no more than every 2 days (3 days if I can!).

Reply

I just researched the Handson brothers plan, and am so intrigued! I had never heard of it before, but am super excited to try it out for my next marathon. I was looking for a new plan, and I believe this is it! I can’t wait to hear how it goes for you.

Reply

Brooke is so stinkin cute! I love that you blow dry her hair!!

Reply

Mmm those pizzas look great! And I love that you blow dry her hair haha!

Reply

That pizza place looks great! Yum. And I can’t wait to follow you in your next marathon training plan and hear about this book!!

Reply

We have the same blow dryer! :) I only blow dry my hair on the weekends or if I am doing something during the week! I also try not to wash my hair every day either, so don’t worry, you’re not the only one!

Reply

I’m super excited for the Biggest Loser to start again, and I love that Jillian is back!
I wash my hair probably 6 times a week on average, but I HATE dealing with it when it’s wet…In the winter now I blow dry it more often but during the summer I pretty much just let it dry on it own and then try to do something nice with it after :)

Reply

So fun! That pizza looks amazing. Are you running San Diego this yr? I am thinking about running it…maybe :-) I need a change of scenery.

Reply

I’ve read about the Hansons method through Runner’s World and am super interested in it! I’m excited to hear how it goes for you. I’d totally be down with running a longest run of 16!

Reply

My daughter is two and she still is just now getting enough hair to blow dry! As for training plans, I tried so hard to follow one but I feel too much like a failure if I don’t do exactly what’s on the schedule. So I through out mine and run 6 times a week with one speed day and one long run day.

Reply

Have not read the book but my future goal in the near future is to complete a full marathon. I am interested though and will do some research on the book. I kind of make up training plans in my head and have no idea if what I am doing is right but it seems to work for me. Coming from a military background all my running experience prior to actually training for any type of race was ok lets go run 4 miles it was never for any type of goal other than staying physically fit for the military and now that I have started running for a goal I have learned that you need some type of plan other than just go running. I completed three half marathons last year and am looking to do the same or more this year. I tend to work on speed for my shoerter runs, and throw some some hill work in there and a long run once a week. It improved my shorter run times and my longer runs seem to come with ease now. I was my hair 7 days a week and since its so short it dries pretty fast on its on LOL.

Reply

That’s the plan I’m using right now!! I started my blog to talk about my training. I’m so interested to see how it goes for you! I’m on week 8 right now.

Reply

I never blow-dry my hair except for special mornings when I don’t exercise or if I randomly shower at some odd time in the day. I bike to work with wet hair, and by the time it dries it is flat on the top and crazy at the bottom. mwhahahaha

Reply

I got that book for Christmas and LOVE IT! I am almost finished with it and am so excited about how much information it gives and am amped to train hard/right! I don’t blow dry my hair often – I’m too lazy. I let it air dry at night or scrunch it up with some mousse so I don’t have to bother. :)

Reply

I just got that book too, I’m really excited to read it!

Reply

That looks like a good read! I would love to read up a new training plan to use after I have my baby. I used the “100 Day Marathon Plan” by Marius Bakan for my last marathon and I had good results. It had a lot of speedwork…which I know everyone loves so much;)

I postpone washing my hair as much as possible. Usually every 3 days. If I curl or wave it sometimes I can even go four haha.

SO SO SO excited for the new season of Biggest Loser. I haven’t been faithful watching it, but I’m thinking this one will be really good with Jillian back.
P.S. totally jealous of your fun trail runs and beautiful weather. I really wished I were in California when my car said 4 degrees this morning…yuck!

I haven’t watched biggest loser much the last couple of seasons, but looking forward to it this year!

She’s a little diva in that hair getting her hair blow dried!!

I wish they had a pizza place like this in Austin. We have Papa Murhpys, where you can build your own pizza, but you have to take it home to bake it. I want my pizza NOW!!

Definitely looking forward to watching the Biggest Loser on Sunday…I’m wondering if the contestants are gonna run a marathon this year? I’ve never ran a marathon but I ran two half marathons last year and am looking to step up my running this year, so I’m looking forward to hearing about yours and everyone training for motivation and maybe one day run a full myself. The pizza looked great and I dont blow dry LOL

Reply

We watch TBL on Netflix which means I have to wait. I love that show, i cry every episode. I love it when favourite bloggers get together – glad you all had such a good time.

Reply

First off I’m so glad I found your blog yesterday, I’m already obsessed!

I’m still looking for the perfect training plan for my half marathon in May but I found a pretty decent one from Self magazine.

Sadly I have to wash my hair every day. It gets so oily so fast! I shower at night and sometimes even the next morning it’s already oily!! Dry shampoo doesn’t seem to help at all either. If I could get away with it, I definitely would!

Reply

Awwwww, looks like you guys had so much fun! So sad I couldn’t make it!!

Reply

Where do I get my training plans from? Google! Ha ha. I tend to google things and read a bunch of different methods, etc and then put together my own. I try to listen to my body, though, instead of being hardcore with a schedule. If my schedule says to run 8 miles, but my body is only “feeling” 5, then I will do what my body tells me. I will NOT get injured this close to a half marathon again! ;-)

I have to wash my hair daily…especially with how sweaty I tend to get regularly. That being said, I only blow-dry the bangs, so they don’t get a mind of their own. The rest of my hair tends to dry in the car on the way to work (heater blowing full blast…that’s close enough to blow-drying, right?)

Reply

Um, wow. That pizza looks delicious!

I condition my hair every time I shower, but only shampoo 1-2 times a week. (I live by the Curly Girl method–it’s a thing, look it up! Haha.)

YES, I’m going to watch Biggest Loser. I never have before, but I’ve recently become a Jillian fan, and am so excited that she’s on it :-)

Reply

I read that book a month or two ago and was contemplating trying it for my next marathon too. However I also just started working with a running coach (ridiculous that someone my speed is spending money on a coach, who do I think I am?) so I might get a plan from him instead. Torn.

I do love that the longest run is only a 16 mile run, I love speed workouts and can manage tempo, but I detest long runs!

Reply

I loooovee that you blow dry Brooke’s hair. TOO cute.

Reply

that pizza looks amazing! i’m going to need to find a DIY pizza place near here ASAP. i get my running plans from the internet – free is good :) I wash my hair every other day (approx) and use dry shampoo on my days off. I try to get hooked on shows only after they’re finished, so I can watch straight through. I’m currently hooked on The Wire and Friday Night Lights!

That pizza place looks so good, I love that you get to design your own little pizza!

The world needs more of those kind of pizza places.

But, I’m planning on watching TBL for sure! I’m too addicted to stop!

So funny that she sits there while you dry her hair!
I hope you didn’t try to climb on a carousel after 14 miles of trail running in 2 days..OUCH! ;-)

My husband runs for the Hansons and I’ve flipped through the book and tried “Last 3 go” during my long run. I really liked the idea of speeding up at the end of a long run because when I get the laziest and notice my pace per mile slowing down. Wish I had this book to read when I was training for the marathon. I never trust internet training plans so it’s nice that there is a book from real coaches that do this for a living.

Reply

What a dang fun day with some awesome ladies and adorable kiddos. I am not jealous at all….

Love the Hanson Brooks plan and from what I know about it I think it sounds ideal for you. My friend Merri used it for her first marathon. She only ran like 25-30mpw with her longest run being 16 miles and she ran a 3:12…for her first marathon! Best of luck and I cannot wait to hear all about it. :)

Reply

I bought this book too! Since I had already started training for my 1st full marathon, I picked up the beginner training at about week 6. I have followed for about 3 weeks now and I tell you Im exhausted, but hopefull it’s going to get me to the finish line. Love the concept!

Reply

1. I get my training plans from Runner’s World SmartCoach.
2. I only wash my hair 2X a week, and thats with running and working. Dry shampoo is a life-saver. I hate drying my hair, I have thin strands…but tons of them. It takes about 20 minutes to dry my hair. Talk about a pain.
3. BIGGEST LOSER! I’m so excited, I put the dates on my calendar when it was first announced. I’m pumped for this season because JILLIAN IS COMING BACK!!!

Reply

Where do you get your training plans from? Has anyone else read this book? Haven’t read this book, but it looks like it would be an interesting read. I am training for a half marathon in June, so I have been searching for a training plan.

How long does it take you to blow-dry your hair? On average how many times a week do you wash it? Ughhh! I hate having to wash my hair everyday, but it gets so greasy and gross looking. I am so jealous of people who can go days at a time without washing their hair. I am unfortunately not one of them. I wash it everyday and it takes about 12 minutes to dry and then an additional 5-8 to flat iron.

Is anyone going to watch The Biggest Loser this season (it starts on Sunday)? What shows are you into lately? Not really into The Biggest Loser. Really into: Modern Family, New Girl, Too Cute (Animal Planet), Shark Tank

I heart the Biggest Loser and I actually have that training plan book on my nightstand waiting for me to read it. My honey has already read it and thinks it’s awesome.

I just started Hansons training plan last week for a marathon in May. Weather has been so crazy here and Christmas kind of got me off track (not the best way to start off!) :)

I can’t wait to read what you are going to say about this book!! I’m training for SF rock n roll 1/2 marathon in April and already know that I want to do a full (someday) but know I want to have a training schedule for it. My 1/2 marathon time is around 1:40 right now but my goal is sub 1:30, any tips you can give me to increase speed?? I’ve been reading a LOT of stuff on running and everything says to make most runs easy and only do 1-2 hard runs per work but mentally it’s hard for me to not go out and run what I want my pace to be for the race. Also, do you know if my hard runs should be shorter distances and make longer runs an easy pace? I’m just getting into this whole running thing, I used to run just an wasy pace for exercise but since I had my last baby almost a year ago I’ve stepped up my training and would like to start racing and getting PR’s. :) I would love any advice from you! Sorry for the novel!! If you want to email me back, I’d love to hear from you [email protected]. (I’ve commented randomly but I majorly blog stalk you haha)

So sad I missed the hangout. :( Um… can’t wait for The Biggest Loser!!! Yay!!!!!

Reply

This is the 2nd time I’ve heard about that book-I must be suppose to read it, even though I’ve not run anything more than 5K’s. I wash my hair every day and sometimes twice if I exercise/run in the evenings and get all sweaty. I don’t think it’s good to wash your hair that much, but I do. I don’t watch TBL, right now we watch a bunch of shows on BBC America. My favorite at the moment is The Hour. Love reading your posts! And that baby girl of yours is ADORABLE!

Reply

Can’t wait to hear you take on this book. I’ve heard of it, but haven’t read it. I usually don’t follow anything too strictly, but I’ve only ever ran a half marathon, so that’s probably why. Once I’m ready for the full I’m sure I’ll be looking for something to follow. BTW, I can’t get enough of the adorable Brooke pics!!

Reply

I usually just find random training plans online and add in ideas from runner’s world or books.

I used to wash my hair 1-2 a week, but lately my hair is getting greasier more quickly so now I wash 3-4 times a week, depending on if I have to go places and look nice or laze around the house. I procrastinate washing my hair because it takes THIRTY minutes to blow dry!

I cannot wait for biggest loser!!! I know the contestants do take on some bad habits, but the result is so inspiring I get sucked in. Recently I started watching Downton Abbey; not sure if you’d like it, but I do!

Reply

Love running books and totally can’t wait to hear all about this one. My fave is Run less Run Faster, which is where I get my plans.

Reply

I love that book. I can’t wait to start reading it again after the baby is born in July! Got to get back my speed then : )

Reply

Jack Daniels running formula is what my college coach used for mid distance/distance workouts. I love his running philosophy. I actually just took 4 weeks of running off in December. As hard as it was, it will get me ready for a great yr of racing. In his book, Jack Daniels explains a planned break to be a part of the phases of running. I’d definitely check it out if I were you!!

Reply

That pizza looks so good!!! I usually watch the biggest loser but I will be without tv for 6 weeks so I don’t know if I will be able to see it. I’ll probably watch it online after I get back though!

Have the HMM book and LOVE it! Am using a modified version of the training plan to train for Boston this spring. So excited to hear what you think of it!

I read the Hanson article in Runner’s World about one or two years ago. They are hard core!! Any tips for a first time marathoner? I guess my goal is to fish around a 4:30 for the first time. But, I would love to go under 4 someday. :)

Reply

All the training plans that I have used, I have taken from Bluemile and Women’s Running Magazine. I usually take them and adapt them to meet what works best for me! I haven’t read that book, but I’d like to! I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it!

If I wear my hair straight it takes me about 20 minutes to dry it! :/ and then not to mention about 30 to straighten it! ugh! If I wear it curly- it takes about 5 minutes to dry it!
