The Taper and Bagels

Today’s workout was an easy 7 miles on the good ol treadmill.  I never really know how to taper for a 1/2 marathon… the marathon I usually take the two days off before the race so I usually just take a day off before the 1/2.  I keep all of my runs easy the week of any race but I think I should figure out the taper a little bit better.  At least I have mastered the art of carb loading and I am the best at glycogen storage.

After my run Brooke was hungry and so I turned on the tv while I fed her and the best show ever was on.   I turned it on right before the showcase showdown which is clearly the best part (except if they play plinko that day).  PS Drew got tiny.

Fun fact about my family: My dad was ON Price is Right way back when and he won a dishwasher and pottery wheel.   He is pretty much famous.

Costco bagel and serving bowl salad with bbq chicken.

And the only person in the history of my whole life that enjoys my signing and doesn’t ask me to stop (maybe she will once she can talk).  Her very favorite song is ‘You Are My Sunshine’ especially the part where I try really hard to hit the high note but fail miserably.

By the way, I saw these at TJ’s last week and I haven’t stopped thinking about them since and sometimes I find myself staring at the picture of them that I took on my iPhone. I am taking that as a sign that I need to go get them today.

Its a blessing and a curse I tell you…..I have one about 2 min from my house, I find myself in there at least 4 times a week.

Agreed!! I was happily surprised by how tasty they are!

ugh..now I want those cupcakes

I watch Price is Right on Monday and Wednesdays because it’s on right when I get home from class.

I am not even good at training for a race. I lack commitment all that jazz.

We are twins — Cinnamon Sugar for sure! Have you tried Cinnamon Crunch from Panera? AMAZE BALLS!

Are you racing this weekend?! If so, have fun!
Is Brooke’s hair getting darker?
My favourite kind of bagel is cheddar, lightly toasted, with nothing on it. I don’t like there to be too much cheese in the bagel though. (Picky, hey?!)

Hey Janae! Happy Friday.

FYI, the pizza crust turned out great! My 7 & 9 year old boys gobbled it up.

I loved watching Price is Right. You are right… Drew has gotten tiny.

Favorite bagel flavor… Salt&Pepper.

Have a swell weekend. It has gotten cold here in WA state. A cool 34 degrees on my morning run.

I used to watch the Price is Right with my grandmother in the summers when she would watch us. She doesn’t really speak English I think she just knew they were having a good time on the show and she would have a good time watching it haha

Favorite Bagel Flavor: I’m going to be boring here PLAIN. I like my cream cheese flavored and filled with all kinds of goodies. Although I am partial to jalapeno cheddar bagels if I have the option.

Considering I haven’t yet run a race longer than 5K I don’t think I need to worry about tapering. (I think?) Although this week I tried out my first REAL speed workout & I’m still kind of sore and I have to race on Sunday…it’s kinda on a mountain. But I don’t believe it really goes up the mountain. I’m going to do an easy 2 miles today and probably use tomorrow to rest if I am still sore/tight.

I used to love watching Price is Right as a kid. That is so cool your dad was on the show. Those cupcakes look VERY dangerous!!

Last time I watched PIR was probably the day my son as born…7.5 years ago! We watched it right up until I started pushing. The RNs and us joked that the baby was the showcase showdown prize. The parent closest to guessing baby’s weight (without going over!) was the “winner”. We were clearly dorks!!

Taper in full effect…Chicago marathon on Sunday!!!

One of my friends was on price is right today!! He was in the third or fourth row and you can see him behind that lady in the picture. He was yelling at her but she wouldn’t listen. Hahaha

I used to watch Price Is Right ALL the time when I was younger back when Bob Barker was the man!
Our local bagel place makes the most delicious French toast bagel ever. It is even covered in confectionary sugar when it’s still warm so it gets all gooey.

I love the Price is Right! They have a fake show in Vegas and me and Ryan went. It was so fun!
Man… I love all different bagels… It depends on my mood! Everything is always good. Cinnamon sugar is so good! And cinnamon raisin too! I can’t choose!

GOOD LUCK at your 1/2 mary this weekend!! You are going to do awesome! I can’t wait to hear all about it :-)

You should do a post sometime about your favorite things for Trader Joes! I’d love to hear what you like best. I have only been once so my experience at Tj’s is limited.

Hi Janae :-) That picture of Brooke is lovely :-) such a beautiful little one. Leo is sleeping beside me soundly……we did it Janae! I remember talking to you on twitter early on in our pregnancies at the point where we had both developed an aversion to broccoli! And now we have our gorgeous babies….what a journey! Like you, I’m an endorphin addict when it comes to exercise and found it hard to go more than a couple of days without a run before I became pregnant. After a month of modified bed rest and now at least 6 weeks of no exercise post C-Section (I’m going just a little bit mad now!), I’m officially living my runs through you! So knock out an extra mile for me sweetie! :-) and know you’re my running idol! x x x

Ahh I got those TJ cupcakes a few months ago and my fiance and I finished the tin in 1.5 days. Cupcakes for breakfast! :)

I had back surgery when I was 17 and while I was recovering my mom and I The Price is Right together every morning. That was back in Bob Barkers day!

Don’t know about tapering yet. I’m currently 8 days away from my first half marathon so I’ll let you know how it goes.

Favorite bagel by far is sesame wheat!

I used to watch Price is Right all the time as a kid. And the only show taping I’ve ever seen in person was The Price is Right so it will always have a soft spot in my heart!

I usually take the day off before a race to taper. And I run easy and lighten up the mileage about 5 days before the race too. Since I don’t do speedwork (I’m lazy) and I rely solely on endurance training it sorta works for me.

Favorite bagel is the Everything Bagel!

I used to watch the Price is Right with my grandma when she babysat in the summer. Of course, that was when good ol’ Bob was on there!

I adore you. Needed to tell you that.

Your dad–is pretty much the coolest EVER now. How cool is that random fact? Love it.
PS drew is tiny. Agreed.

Those cupcakes…OMG…..

Funny story – Growing up we LOVED the Price is Right and we vacationed next door to another family at the beach every summer for the same 2 weeks. When we were kids, at 10:55 am every day we would all run up to the beach cottage to watch the Price is Right and play along, we were obsessed…Years later the little boy in the other family was in college and went on the show and won the Showcase Showdown! Must have been all our years of practicing!

I have never tried Cinnamon Sugar!! LOVE everything bagels and Asagio cheese (Panera) bagels but I think I need to try a French Toast bagel before I can claim a favorite….

Reply

I LOVE the Price is Right, but it just doesn’t seem the same without Bob Barker and his slightly pervy ways.

I am doing better at tapering. In fact, I start next week. I do a two week taper before a half, gradually decreasing the miles and just enjoying the short runs and definitely take the day off before. Worked like magic last time.

Cinnamon and sugar bagels are the bee’s knees. Is there even a reason for another kind of bagel?

My biochemistry professor let me in on his carbo-loading/tapering secret (since he has a PhD in biochem and he is a 3:10 marathoner, I took his word for it…) – 6 days before the marathon, cut out carbs/sugar. Stick to an Atkin’s-like diet for 3 days in order to deplete the glycogen in your muscles and get all the enzymes in your muscles ready to make glycogen. Also during this time, do the last of your workouts before the marathon. During the last 3 days before the marathon, eat as many carbs as you can and keep exercise light/nonexistent.

Good luck on your race!! :)

Do you know how Drew grew tiny??? He is a runner, yep! I read all about it in one of my Runner’s World magazines :) Now I bet you REALLY like him. I’m so glad Brooke loves your singing…when my kids were old enough to talk they told me not to sing. My daughter would actually get quite angry if I tried to sing to her :D Good luck on your race you will do AWESOME!! We need to chat about meeting up next weekend…woo hoo!!!

Reply

I used to watch The Price Is Right alll the time growing up! I think I liked it better before Drew was the host though. Aaand those cupcakes! WOW. Those are right up my alley! I don’t think I would’ve had to think twice about buying those babies. Yum!

Reply

Ah your dad is sooo lucky! I used to love staying home from school sick to watch the Price is Right. Love it! I love the cheesey bagels. Current fav is asiago. I don’t know much about tapering. I’ve sorta plateaued with distance lately and races have been shorter distances so I havent really seen the point, but maybe I should be? Idk lol

My neighbour back in the day was on it, and he won BOTH showcases. He was canadian so I don’t know exactly happened with the winnings but he showed us the video and it was hilarious! Talk about a man I think that was in his 60s, red hair, pulling people from the audience as he ran down! It was great.

Oh my gosh, Janae! That image you posted on your blog from pinterest was designed by one of my friends here in San Diego! He is a graphic designer and his company is Caava. He’s incredibly talented and does a lot of really cool work including photography and web design. What a small world.

Do you taper for 3 weeks before the marathon? Or do you just cut back during the final week?

Reply

I used to watch it every morning in the Summer growing up. That is so chool your dad was on there AND won! A bunch of friends and I went to a taping over Spring break in college. My friend got called up, but never made it past contestants row. And I am sorry, but the show just isn’t the same without Bob. I don’t like Drew as the host. I think John O’Hurley should have replaced him.

I am no good at the taper. I usually take the day before a race easy, but not off. You would think for how ‘hard’ it is for me to taper it would bt hard for me to skip excercise AFTER the race. I am usually right back in the hym on Monday, but I have been such a slacker this week after the marathon and all my workouts have been easy peasy or nothing at all. AND I am eating everything I see (so it is probably a good thing I am not around those TJ cupcakes). I don’t know what my deal is. I need to snap out of it or the scale and my pants are going to start laughing at me,

I have a pumpkin bagel and a cinnamon Laughing Cow Cheese Wedge in my kitchen calling my name right now (please see previous paragraph).

Good Luck on your race this weekend! I’m excited to hear the Recap.

I drank the Trader Joe’s kool-aid and am pretty much dying to try everything in the store.
I LOVE TPIR!!! Plinko is my absolute favorite. I still harbor dreams of having my own Plinko board one day.
I love tapering. I take it easy the week before a long race and just take the day before completely off.

Reply

That’s so cool that your dad was on Price is Right! I seriously love that show. I remember whenever I took a sick day from school when I was younger, I’d stay at home in my PJ’s and watch it. I would have failed miserably if I was ever a contestant, but a part of me always wanted to get on the show and bid $1 :D

-WOW those cupcakes sound amazing…I saw a recipe for homemade pumpkin reese’s cups that I’m determined to make tonight!

I LOVED the price is right as a kid. During the summer, I had to watch it every day. I miss Bob Barker.

Did you see the copy of Runner’s World that had Drew Carey in it? Apparently he lost the weight by becoming a runner!

Reply

I love the asiago w/ veggie cream cheese. Also the cinnamon bagel w/ almond cream cheese. Nope to Price is Right…or at least not since the 80’s. :) I don’t know how to taper…I just follow the training schedule which usually just has a few short runs that week w/ one or two days of CT. Jessica

Yum that salad looks delicious! I have the same Crate & Barrel Parker bowls but the little ice cream size ones haha

Sooooo i am REALLY struggling with tapering :/ I run every day because it keeps me sane. I dread the taper! I am running the B.A.A Half on Sunday… ran 4 miles this morning and want/need to run 4 or more tomorrow because I just love, love, love to run. I think I am at a point, as many runners get to, such as yourself, where the ‘taper’ becomes less elongated. I have had a lot of luck just ceasing running the day before… or even ‘trotting’ a few miles the day before ;) I can seriously relate to you like crazy.

I am SO glad you have discovered the awesomeness of Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods… both fabulous for different reasons, right!?

I have so so so many <3's for bagels. Udi's makes these amazing gluten free bagles that I LOAD with whipped cream cheese and strawberry jam. Cream cheese and jam = heaven.

Thanks as always for such a positive, smile inducing post!

(And that is a very competitive list :))

your dad is famous! i want to be on that show! life long dream. Good luck racing, you are a rockstar. Brooke should be proud!

I’ve only ever tapered once and it went incredibly well!! I was going a little stir crazy by the end — I just wanted to RUNNNNN!! But otherwise, I was a fan!
Good luck this weekend! Perhaps pick up the cupcakes on your way home? Or have one before — it’ll be the extra energy you need to sprint for the finish!! ;)

Reply

Sony think that there are any right or wrong ways to taper ecause everyone is different. For half marathons I always take off the day before, do a very easy fartlek 5 days before to turn the legs over, and some strides 2 days before. Always leaves my legs feeling refreshed.

And amen to that Pinterest pin! Life is what you make it.

Reply

I agree, you need those cupcakes!

I haven’t watched the Price is Right in years. Think I’ve only seen it with Drew once and that was when he first started.

My favorite bagel flavor is jalapeno cheddar, hands down. But I did have a pumpkin pie bagel with New York cheesecake cream cheese at Panera’s last weekend. It was scrumptious! May need another one soon!…

Cinnamon raisin or everything bagels! And I’m tapering right now for Chicago, although these three weeks seemed pretty long!

Next week I’m tapering for a half and I’m clueless about how to do it, too!! I think it will involve bagels too ;)

My hubby and I went on the Price is Right when we were on our honeymoon…too bad we didn’t make it on stage. That’s so awesome your dad did though!!! It was fun even just being in the audience because we were in the third row behind where the contestants do the bidding, so we were in pretty much every shot when it was on them ;)

I could really go for a bagel right now…why don’t I have any in my house!!

Thats so funny! When I was a baby/toddler/growing up my grandma always sang “You are My Sunshine” to me! And I grew up on Price is Right too with my dad!

I used to sing You Are My Sunshine to my daughter every night. She wouldn’t go to sleep until I did. She is turning 16 in two weeks and it seems like yesterday when she was Brooke’s size. Thanks for bringing back happy memories. Maybe I’ll go in and sing it to her tonight!! LOL. She’d probably lock me out of her room if I did that!!!
