I get a little too excited seeing this from the freeway:

DSC 4287 2

Pier 39 is by far one of our favorite places to go.

IMG 1080

I finally got a chance to go into the left-handed store.  My life would be so much easier if I would just shell out the $30 for left-handed scissors.  It is a tough life that us left-handers live.

IMG 4805 2

Brooke’s favorite part of the entire day/week/month were the sea lions.   They live the life… they just lay there all cuddled up next to each other basking in the sun all day long.  Okay, their life sounds eerily similar to me and Brooke’s.

IMG 1084

Just walking around and all day being around the huge groups of people everywhere is my favorite.

IMG 1090

It is a rule that we must walk into every single candy or chocolate shoot that we walk by and talk about each item and how beautiful it is.

IMG 4804

Salt water taffy in every single flavor you can imagine.  I really wanted to try their cupcake frosting flavor.

IMG 4806

Our other really deep conversation of the day was about how much of that bread alligator we could each eat in a 2 day period.  Billy said he could eat 3/4th of it in 2 days but I know I could easily eat the whole thing plus the teddy bear shaped one next to it.

IMG 4813

The below item on the right is what I was talking about in my last post that is my new favorite.  It was a crab and shrimp sandwich on sourdough bread and I don’t even want to try to explain how good it was.  We split both the bread bowl with clam chowder and sandwich and ate it while people watching.

IMG 1087

There is no way that we can leave the city without going to Ghirardelli.  Billy was ‘full’ and so we didn’t get our usual ice cream sundae but the cookies and creme cone was really good and so was their pumpkin filled chocolate square.

IMG 4817

See you soon San Fran.

Left-handed or right-handed?

What would you choose right this second to eat… chocolatey candy or fruity/sugary candy?

-I am actually loving chocolate more than fruity candy lately so I choose chocolate.

To go along with the above question… dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate?

Ever had crab?  Do you like it?

There’s a left-handed store??? I need to go there! Obviously, a lefty.

Reply

Right handed here and milk chocolate any time. But dark if it is available too.

Reply

Ahhh San Francisco is one of my favorite cities in the world. LOVE pier 39! I could watch those sea lions all day. And also mock them, because the noises they make are hilarious. As for the questions, I’m a righty, I love dark chocolate (used to prefer milk, but I’ve graduated to dark now… Guess I”m more sophisticated now?? haha juuuust kidding!) and YAY you got a chowder bread bowl!!!! BEST things ever! And a MUST every time you go to Embarcadero! :)

Reply

Wait, so if it’s pumpkin filled chocolate it counts as a vegetable and not dessert, right?

Reply

Seeing these pictures has officially cemented a visit to San Fran as a MUST on my bucket list. Holy guacamole!! It looks FABULOUS!! It’s very far from where I live, but one day I will make it happen! It seems too amazing not to!
I am all about the chocolate lately. Dark chocolate preferably. I usually duck into bulk food stores and buy a little section of dark semi-sweet on a whim — 25cents excellently well spent!! That being said, cupcakes and andy corn are at the absolute top of my Treats I Love list (and yes, I do have one!), but the next 5 slots or so are chocolate-oriented, so I feel as though they trump.
Janae — I have to say that before I started reading your blog, candy, chocolate and any kind of dessert scared me a lot. You’ve taken out the taboo and have shown me that it’s alright to indulge. Thank you for that. It has changed my life. :)

You brought me back to my childhood!! I grew up in the bay area in cali (now live in KC, MO) and I have been dying….DYING to go to San Fran and eat clam chowder. My fav meal of all time. I almost want to cry reading this post lol. Glad you are getting to enjoy the city! Growing up we always took BART to San Fran and shopped and went to Pier 39. So-much-fun.

I love chocolate candy more than fruity candy. Dark chocolate is best.

Reply

Oh, and you especially brought me back to my childhood with holding breath in all of the tunnels on the way to SF. always tried. Very few times succeeded.

Reply

Oh darn you for reminding me about those pumpkin squares. I was seriously addicted to them last year and almost had to go into detox once I ran out. Now I must find some…

Your little day trip looks so blissful!! Bet you wonder how you ever had any fun at all w/out little Miss B. in your life.

Reply

where did you get the amazing bread bowl and sandwich? i’ll be in SF next weekend for NWM!

Reply

I was wondering too! I’ll be in SF for work in Dec and can eat seafood all day long since my husband won’t be with me! I love SF. You are so lucky to be able to just go for the day like this! I hope you had a ton of fun!

Reply

Yay! That crab sandwich and clam chowder combo is exactly what my mom and I share whenever we go to SF! We are seafood freaks! I never took it for granted even in the two years I lived in the city.

For Thanksgiving and Christmas we buy a case of crab from Costco and simmer the crab with a delicious broth we make from scratch. Then we sautee some huuuge prawns, make garlic bread out of sourdough bread and make all the other fixin’s to go with it.

Thanks for making me droool! Glad to see you having some fun out there.

Reply

Ahhh look’s like you guys had a great time!!
You have to go back at Christmastime. Not sure if your down with ice skating but they have 2 outdoor rinks. One is in the middle of Union Square so you can Christmas shop, skate, eat & repeat.
Oh and of course everything is all decked out in decor. It’s really the best!

Reply

I love San Fran! We got engaged in Mendocino and then spent some time exploring San Fran. I also love crab and that sandwich looks ridiculously delicious. I always choose chocolate over fruity. So glad you guys had a fun family day together.

Reply

That bread bowl of clam chowder looks so amazing! Texas (at least San Antonio) has terrible seafood so I never, ever get to eat any. :(

I’ve been on a total dark chocolate kick lately. I can never resist throwing a bar of the Dove dark chocolate into the shopping cart at the grocery store.

Reply

This sounds like such a fun day! San Francisco is definitely on my list of places to visit! California is such a beautiful state!

I’m right handed for most things, but am left handed for golf, hockey, and snowboarding! Strange, I know!

I’ve more of a sugary fruity candy kind of gal! When I eat chocolate, I like dark chocolate the best!

I’ve had crab before but I’m not a huge fan of seafood!

Reply

omg – that crab and shrimp sandwich looks to DIE FOR! Wow. I love crab!!

I would choose chocolate candy over sugary candy any day! and i love all 3 – dark milk and white – i cant discriminate :)

Reply

Very rarely would I choose sugary over chocolate. And dark chocolate FTW!

Right handed. But my son is left handed. There are so many things I try and teach him or help him to do and when he doesn’t get it/can’t do it, it is usually because I am trying to help him do it right handed. For sure I think you guys have it rough!

I have only had crab once and I don’t really remember it. I am allergic now, but I don’t really feel like I am missing out. Neither that or clab chowder sound appealing to me at all. That ice cream you have, on the other hand…. :)

I am impressed with Billy’s breath holding skills. I know I can hold mine for a long time, but I don’t like to. Ross will challenge me sometimes and he always wins because as soon as I get that tightness feeling I call it quits. It freaks me out.

What a fun, short little trip. Love you outfit, by the way!

Reply

Right handed.

I’m on a chocolate kick right now. Milk chocolate is the best, I do like dark chocolate too!

No crab for me. Seafood = no bueno!

Reply

Oh, MAN! You guys definitely know how to live it up San Francisco style (got the clam chowder, lobster roll, Pier 39… everything!).
If you run the Nike Women’s SF Marathon/Half Marathon, you get Ghiradeli’s chocolates near the end and then a San Francisco firefighter will adorn you with a Tiffany’s necklace at the end (their version of a finisher’s medal). You should totally do it next year because it sounds like you enjoy the city!

Reply

Right handed!
I have been in a sugary candy mood lately (hello candy corn!)
Very jealous of your San Fran trip. It looks amazing there I want to go!
I’m a milk chocolate fan but don’t shy away from other forms :)

Not a crab eater here. I actually hate all seafood. Although I have had a spinach dip with crab in it and I devoured it sooooo maybe I do like it?

Reply

Ohmygoodness you are making me miss San Francisco so much! It is one of my favorite cities :-)

Reply

ahh love this recap! I love San Fran and want to get back there ASAP now. You guys got some great shots! Glad you had the clam chowder bread bowl.. thats my fave, but wow does that sandwich look good! I love crab!

Right now I’ve been craving chocolate a lot- which is unusual for me. Last night I had brownies with chocolate fudge ice cream and m&m’s haha.

I like all 3 kinds of chocolate just depends on my mood.

Oh and I’m right handed- never knew they had a lefty store.. awesomeness!

Reply

I’m right-handed, but I excited because my second son appears to be left-handed.

I’d probably go for the fruity right now, because during this pregnancy chocolate gives me heartburn :( But when chocolate doesn’t bother me, I like dark chocolate. There’s this dark chocolate with sea salt that is to die for.

I do like crab…I never use to like seafood, but now I’ll eat pretty much any of it.

Reply

Gorgeous San Fran!!

That sandwich & bread bowl looks amazing. I die.

I’d go choc all the way. DARK choc.

Crab is good, but I love shrimp most!

Reply

Righty.
Chocolate. Dark. Right now.
Not a crab fan.

My favorite part of driving back home to Oakland was crossing the bridge with San Francisco to my left.

Next time you are in the city you need to go to my favorite place. HRD coffee shop. Order all the things. And get french fries. Trust me on this one. http://www.hrdcoffeeshop.com/

Reply

Total lefty and love that store, but I’m too cheap to buy anything from it! Years ago my mom bought me left-handed scissors that I love!
I love that you live so close to SF!!

Reply

I’m a righty. Weirdly, every man I’ve ever dated has been left-handed though.

I don’t eat sweets (I KNOW. We can still be pals, though.) so I’d probably go for crab right now. Love the stuff. I’m pretty sure I could eat my body weight in seafood.

Just a friendly warning to Billy: cops can and do sometimes still fine you for using your phone even if it’s just sitting in your lap being used as a GPS. Ask me how I know. :-( If you keep ‘custody’ of it while he drives, though, or mount it in a cradle, problem solved.

Reply

Lefty all the way!
I love crab. It’s so good.
Chocolate , but something weird has been happening an I haven’t been craving it. Strange.

Reply

Right handed. And I’m loving both candies right now. Sour cherries are the bomb and Milky Way Caramel Apple is the best thing to ever happen to chocolate!
And I like dark chocolate, high quality too. Makes me feel rich ;-) But I also love milk chocolate! White chocolate is my least favorite.

Reply

Love SF! I am so jealous but so glad you guys had a great day. :) You absolutely deserved it.

Reply

Oh my goodness, all the food looks so good! I’m a sucker for baked bread!

I’ve heard San Francisco is beautiful! Although I’d probably have to go at a not-as crowded time. Crowds are not my thing!

Reply

Oh man, I always have a hard time choosing between chocolate and fruity things!

My kids love lobsters. When my parents were in San Fran on vacation a couple years ago they had that bread shop send us a giant bread crab (they didn’t have lobsters. Crab was as close as it could get). It was so much fun!

Reply

My husband holds his breath in tunnels too. Ok, we both do! Chocolate over anything, and I love all chocolate varieties :)

Reply

You can get lefty scissors from Amazon for cheap! http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=left%20handed%20scissors My little brother is a lefty so we know where to find the good stuff :) Fun fact: my dad wanted all of us to be left-handed because he believes it can be an advantage in sports, at least my brother came through for him!

Reply

Oh my gosh I am so jealous of your day in San Francisco. I absolutely love San Francisco… in the love to visit but could never live there sort of way. I always make sure to stock up on salt water taffy when I visit the pier. Let’s just say it never lasts me more than a day or two. So addicting

Reply

Lefty. Chocolate. Dark.

So glad you guys are able to spend time together and hang out in that amazing city. Yeah for you!!! ; )

Reply

What a beautiful city…with lots of beautiful food YUM!!

Although I’m a milk chocolate girl I’d take sugary/fruity candy any day…even better sugary cereal (ya i’m bad heehee)

We love crab!!! Theirs a local restaurant that has all you can eat crab legs on Sundays…we get our moneys worth.

Reply

My favorites from this post are you comparing you and Brooke’s life to the sea lions and you putting quotes around Billy being “full”. I’m never too full for dessert- that’s just silly!
Righty
Fruity candy- specifically gummies.
Always dark chocolate. Hands down.

Reply

Completely random, but … love the color of your jeans!

Reply

What a fun day! That sandwich and clam chowder look AMAZING. And the sourdough bread totally makes it even better. Love your cute pants too! Where’d you find them?

Reply

I am a righty, but all of my siblings and dad are leftys… So mom and I are the odd balls :)

I ALWAYS choose chocolate candy. I hope you don’t hate me for saying this, but I really don’t like fruity candy. Of course if it was fruity or no candy I of course would pick fruity, but I just love chocolate too much… And milk chocolate all the way… Preferably with peanut butter or caramel in it and ice cream surrounding it!

I really like crab. In fact, I made an awesome stuffed shells recipe using crab and Alfredo sauce.

Reply

Lefty fo’ life! We’re the best ones! I NEED to go to this lefty store. Also, have you ever noticed that us leftys always notice other leftys? Kindred spirits!

Fruity candy right now, all the way. I’ve been on a sour kick lately… Want sour Skittles so badly!

Dark chocolate, mmmm.

Reply

Yum, I’m so happy that you went to Ghiradelli and Boudin, two of my faves!!

Reply

Chocolate. Hands down. The darker the better. And crab is another one of my favorite foods. There is so much good food in this post I am starting to drool.

Reply

Ahh this makes me totally miss San Fran! I remember going to Pier 39 and seeing the sea lions, but I’ve never been in the lefty store… I’m a righty though, so I guess it wouldn’t do me much good. And I’ll pretty much always choose fruity candy over chocolate. Chocolate definitely has it’s time and place, but I seem to crave fruity sugary things more than I do chocolate, and when I do crave chocolate, it’s usually the melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness of milk chocolate.

Reply

I love San Francisco! Used to live there and miss it every day. Now I’m a “bridge and tunneler” living in the East Bay. Next time you are at Pier 39 and want some good people watching, look for the Bushman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Famous_Bushman). I could stand there all day watching him scare unsuspecting passerby’s. He’s usually across the street from Joe’s Crab Shack on Jefferson. Now you’re in the know so he won’t ever scare you! Glad you’re enjoying the Bay Area!

Reply

Your posts are making me SUPER excited!!! I just hope I don’t have to run up that huge hill in the last picture…I’m sure I will or at least some similar to it! Brooke looks very concerned in the picture with the ice cream. I have heard there are some pretty strange people there, maybe she spotted some :) So excited to see you!!!!!

Reply

LOVE the photos Janae! It totally makes me miss SF soooo badly!

Also, I have a totally random question for you and/or Billy – did you guys ever get a chance to do a full review on the new Garmin? I am seriously interested in getting one and was wondering how the new one you were trying out works…

Thanks!

Reply

Two of my kids are left handed (which I find so cool for some reason — like because left-handed people are awesome), and I feel like I’m stealing part of their childhood away by not buying them special scissors.

Reply

CHOCOLATE!

enough said.

Also, I’m so jealous you’re in the bay area/ ran RNR San Jose. Can’t wait until I go home in a month! In the meantime, I’m living vicariously through you.

Reply

A friend of mine had a group of women over for lunch this summer and made crab salad sandwiches. I had to give myself a small pep talk before, but ended up loving it!! and left with the recipe.

Reply

I immediately wondered if you went to ghirardelli, that pumpkin spice caramel chocolate is amazing!

Reply

LOVED these two posts and the gorgeous photos!

Right handed, ALWAYS chocolatey candy, dark chocolate is always my favorite, and
I wanted to like crab but it just didn’t work for me :(

Reply

I’m a Florida girl and miss my shell fish like crazy!!!
San Fran has amazing candy shops, I’m very very glad you take full advantage of them!!!

Reply

I always choose dark chocolate! Ghiradelli is amazing! I’m so jealous :)

Reply

Looks like you guys are having a fabulous time in San Fran!! I went there a loooong time agao and would LOVE to go back sometime.

I’d have to say that it depends- sometimes I want something really rich (dark), sometimes really really sweet (white) or just regular (milk). I cannot and will not choose a favorite :)

I love grilled shrimp (especially shrimp on the barbie from Outback!) and crab (imitation or real will do), and I like it even more if it has already been peeled/deveined and taken out of the shell for me. Sometimes it’s more of a chore to get to the actual food, which takes all the enjoyment out of eating it!

Have a super Tuesday night!!

Reply

All I can think about is the bread. I would eat that alligator. ALL of it.

Reply

FYI there’s been a recall of FMW! I got a call from my local grocery store alerting me about the recall since I just stocked up on them over the weekend! And since I’m a HRG fan I didn’t run home to clear out my pantry or make sure my daughter didn’t eat them, I grabbed my laptop to alert you. As soon as I’m done typing I’ll go make sure my kid isn’t eating them :)

Reply

Oh my heck I LOVE Boudins!!! I highly recommend their Havarti cheese bread and spring mix salad next time you go! Amazing!!

Reply

Sttttttttttttoopppp!!! You’re making me want to go back to San Fran!!! And gah, I heart Ghiradelli. Delish!!!

Reply

My sister used to work at Lefty’s! We got a bunch of lefty swag. Pretty cool, huh?

Reply

Looks like a great time! FYI- bay area peeps are finicky about the way people refer to their fair city. It’s never “Frisco” or “San Fran”. You simply say “The City”.
:)

Reply

I am a lefty who loves milk chocolate! Sounds like a personal ad.

Reply

Fellow left hander here, there are quite a lot of us actually, you would think the world would start catering to us ;-).
Totally in a chocolate mood lately unless candy corn is in the conversation because it is that time of year!
I love milk chocolate, learning to like dark chocolate, and like white chocolate when I’m not in the mood for chocolate.
I have never had crab but I still trying to ease into the whole seafood thing, always hated it growing up and still can’t get used to the fishy taste.
I am jealous of the San Fran trip, I have always wanted to go there! Thanks for sharing so many pics.

Reply

Lefty all the way here! I love how Brooke is eying that ice cream!

Reply

I will have one of each of those breads, please. Oh and one of each of those chocolates!

I am right-handed.

What would you choose right this second to eat… chocolatey candy or fruity/sugary candy? Chocolate. Always! Milk chocolate is my favorite. Dark is a close runner-up. White chocolate is NOT chocolate. It is yuck.

No crab for me. No meat.

Reply

I’m right-handed.

I always choose fruity candy. I’m not much of a chocolate fan. A thin layer on things is OK, but that’s it.

I love crab! And I love eating it while people-watching in San Fran just like you did. :c)

Reply

Right handed and hand me the chocolate -dark or milk, I’m easy ;-).

Oh my gosh, best day ever! SO jealous of yu being surrounded by all that sugary goodness.

Reply

Ahhhhh! I was just there, in the exact same place as you over Labor Day!!!! We went to Napa and San Francisco for our 10 year anniversary. I love San Fran!!!!!!! I’ve been twice, both times just for a day. I want to go back and spend a week. When I was training for my 1st marathon I became injured, but we had been training to run SF. I always said I wanted to have my first full to be a beautiful sightseeing experience. However…..I am finally getting to do my first full next month, here at home. Definitely NOT scenic. That’s beside the most important info….I had the most incredible truffle from the chocolate place on the pier and chocolate covered toffee and we ate at the crab shack where I had the killer crab. Love it all!!!!! Glad you did too!!

Reply

I want some chocolate right now!! but theres none in my house… it’s 9:30pm and i’m considering hopping in the car for an ’emergency’ trip :) Although I know dark chocolate is better for you but if that didn’t matter i’d choose white chocolate 9 times out of 10
Crab, yes, amazing! fresh crab dipped in a bubbling pot of garlic butter mmmm

Reply

Chocolate trumps sugary candy any day for me! Milk, dark, white- they all work hut dark is my fave!

Reply

Ha. I have so many of the same pictures from when we were there the other month. I’ll buy lefty scissors if you do. They have got to make things easier on us, yes? Ghiradelli- we gave one in San Diego so when you bring Brooke down to meet her men we’ll all go.

Reply

right-handed, except when I play golf then I can go both ways

I’m going with fruity because I have chocolate at the house that I’m trying not to eat.

Totally milk chocolate. Sometimes white, rarely dark, always milk. Okay, maybe I will go eat that chocolate…

My daughter made sushi rolls that had imitation crab, does that count? It was okay. Don’t think I’d order crab, too much work!

Reply

that looks like such a fun day! omg i would kill for a bread bowl right now. :)

Reply

Right this second I’d go for fruity candy. And that’s so cool they have a left hand store! I’m right handed but I sympathize…

Reply

I won’t show these pics to my hubby because he’s already craving a trip to San Fran and I don’t want to go back just yet. Crazy, I know! Although I could go for a ginormous sundae at Ghirardelli right now!

Reply

I say the Ferry Building is a great spot for a foodie to spend the afternoon. Try it next time!! There are gourmet cheeses, chocolate, oysters, coffee, a farmers market, and a bunch of great restaurants. When I was in law school, on a nice day, a bunch of us would come here and pig out on oysters and beer!

Reply

Righty! I can use my left hand for almost everything though (with the exception of writing or throwing a ball – look out!).

Chocolate – lots and lots of chocolate. Dark chocolate – the darker the better. I also love white chocolate. There’s this gourmet chocolate bar that is white chocolate coconut, and it’s seriously one of the best things I’ve ever had. Amazing.

I love crab! That sandwich and breadbowl of chowder are making me HUNGRY!

Reply

umm..how did we not know that we are BOTH lefties?? so happy about this.
funnest day in the city, we’re going together next time!

Reply

Your hair looks like a rainbow in that picture! SO cool!

Reply

Ahhh!! SO CRAZY! I was literally just there on Friday and Monday! We went every where y’all went and a little more! If you look at my blog, the last post I just did was on the first part of our trip which was San Fran!

How delicious were those Pumpkin Spice squares? I died! I wish I could have met you!

Reply

I am a lefty and I desperately need a left handed can opener. That’s the thing that gets me the most frustrated.
PS This post made me incredibly hungry!!!

Reply

Dark chocolate, you know, for health benefits and such. I say this as I have a bag of milk chocolate m&m’s in my purse right now. ;)

Crab is delicious!!

That alligator bread looks insane. So cool.

Reply

I’m a righty….Maybe Santa can get you a pair of left-handed scissors for Christmas?

CHOCOLATE CANDY!! (What store was that you went to?) Milk Chocolate.

I have a love affair with Crab. My BF and I went to D.C. this summer and it was my personal goal to have crabcakes at every place we dined. Sooo delish! Crab dip, crab legs, crab cakes, crab bisque, soft-shell crab….all :) !

Reply

A left-handed store?! how cool is that?! San Fran looks great – several of my friends from here in the UK rate it highly. I’m a veggie but wish I liked seafood…..I just can’t get away with the taste at all!

Reply

I’m a lefty too and so want to go to that store now!! There is a serious lack of “left hand only” stores in the US! :) Oh, and PS, left handed scissors are totally worth the money. I hate real scissors!

Reply

My husband is a lefty so he got a kick out of that store when we were in San Fran. I’m all about chocolate (milk chocolate!), my husband isn’t big on chocolate so I usually get it all to myself.

I don’t eat seafood so crab is not on my list of tasty things to eat.

Reply

ahh these pics are so familiar–we totally walked those same places when we were in SF a few weeks ago for RAGNAR!! You need to go try Bi-Rite Creamery next time!! Awesome ice cream :)
