Let’s talk about running clothes.

I am kind of obsessed with afternoons.  Brooke and I get everything done that is super important in the morning (like brush my teeth and call my mom) and then spend the afternoon cuddling, napping, tummy time (both of us) and today eating straight out of the strawberry ice cream container.  It was crazy hot in our house and I was too lazy to change out of my jeans and so I decided eating ice cream was the only way to cool myself off.  Billy, I had to eat straight out of the container because I was holding Brooke and didn’t have enough hands to dish it out.

It must be really hard to be a baby because they just lay there and watch you eat delicious foods.

For lunch I had B’s grandma’s (they left this morning and I am still mourning) leftover egg sandwich from Togo’s and I really can’t express how much I love egg salad.  I also had an apple, yogurt and coleslaw… I guess I was craving mayonnaise.

I finally got to try out some new running clothes on a 5 mile run today that have been sitting on my dresser tempting me everyday to run these last few weeks.  Running clothes are my form of decorations for my apartment… who needs Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn when you can put bright colored tops and shorts everywhere.  Billy calls this me being messy but I call it art.  That made no sense at all and I wish I could blame it on sleep deprivation but I am actually getting a lot of sleep.

The Brooks Women’s Glycerin Skort and the D’lite Mesh Tank.

When I first got my package from Brooks as part of my ambassadorship I was excited but not in love with the clothes before I tried them on.  The shirt seemed boxy and boring and I have never worn a running skirt before.  I was proved wrong about both.

The top is awesome.  It is super lightweight and I love that the neckline is a little higher than most tanks because I get sick of pulling them up.  It comes in a ton of bright fun colors and the mesh shirt is incredibly breathable.  I actually really liked that it wasn’t super tight but it didn’t feel baggy either (does that make sense?).  I am still in it 8 hours later if that means anything:)

The skirt took a few miles to get used to because I am so used to shorts but I ended up liking it a lot.  I absolutely loved the thick waistband at the top and the inner boy shorts were great.  They have a silicone gripper on the hem of the shorts so there is no way those shorts are going to hike up.  There is a zipper pocket in the back and also a hidden pocket to hold my swedish fish.  I don’t know if I am converted over to the running skirt but I did like this one a lot.

Last but not least I also tried out a new sports bra, the Champion Smoothie High-Support Sports bra.  We just get a shot of it on the counter because I don’t think my stomach has seen the light of day since the 90’s.  This bra came at the perfect time because I am needing a little extra support at this time in my life;)  This bra is $38 and it was super comfortable.  I have had a ton of problems with chaffing in in the past (even on super short runs) and didn’t have any problems with this one.   Everything stayed right in place (TMI, I am sorry but if you NEED tons of support for running, try this one out).

DSC 3774

They also sent that sweet plastic cup with plastic straw and Billy couldn’t believe how excited that cup made me.  I have always wanted one of these and will be drinking every beverage from here on out out of it.

A friend sent me an email with this rude picture in it:

Rude because I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Genius. I must have it or I will cry.

What are you in NEED of in terms of running gear… Shoes, Sports Bras, Shorts, Tops, Socks?!?

What is something that you look for when getting new running clothes?  What are some of your requirements?

What are your feelings about running skirts? Have you ever worn one?

Mayonnaise… yay or nay?

Yes about the Champion bras! I found one at Target on sale and it is the comfiest bra I’ve ever had. Very worth the $$.

Smore croissants? Genius! ;)

Reply

omg s’mores croissant is the best idea ever. i had one of those cups with the straw– be careful, your dishwasher will crush it! brooks pure are my favorite shoes ever, but i’ve never tried their clothes…cute top!

Champion sports bras are my favorite – cheap, comfy, and they come in all sorts of obnoxious neon colors that my husband makes fun of.

Mayo makes me gag, except in my mom’s coleslaw. There’s just something about food that your mom makes…

Reply

I can never have enough running/workout clothes! ;) I’d love to try out a running skirt though. I just think they’re super cute! And that egg salad sandwich looks REALLY good to me right now. Now I know what I’m having for dinner! :)

Reply

I was apprehensive about skirts as well. I thought that only if I ran fast could I pull it off. Otherwise, I would like like a sissy in a skirt – ha!
I now have 2 and love them. I don’t wear them in the gym – only outside. I don’t know why, but they seem like an outdoor running item to me – weird, I know :)
PS Are you sure you just had a baby?? You look great!

I need those purple running shoes. Love me some purple! What are those?

Have to have colorful running clothes! Will not run in a skirt till I get thin!

They are the Brooks PureFlow and I absolutely love them!

Oh goodness I am need of all things running clothes! Gotta focus on maternity clothes for now though.

I only have one running skirt but I really like it. I am excited to try this one though cause I like the idea of the shorts staying in place better

Reply

hahaha i love cups like that too! i have about 15, mostly from various starbucks. i call them ‘adult sippy cups’ and they are great b/c i am really really good at spilling my drink. which sucks.

running skirts are the best, and lulu running skirts are the best of the best. however, i am most picky about my running socks bc i want them to not show, but not slip down, and they have to be really really thin. the lulu featherweights are again the best. their stuff is the most expensive, but i begrudgingly admit that it’s worth it most of the time.

I really need some new sports bras! I’ve been looking but haven’t found anything I like. I have a smaller bust (small B), but usually need at least a medium for the width around my body. THe problem is that the medium is expecting my lady bits to be bigger, therefore not being tight enough and holding down the little bits that I do have.

I want to feel comfortable in them. I like me tops fitted, but not super tight.

I like them, but my thighs do not. Tons of chaffing, even with the use of bodyglide. So I usualy wear my running skirts for non running exercises.

Nay. Miracle whip is way better!

I had lice when I was nine, you know how my mom got rid of it… She smothered my head in mayo, eewwwewwwww!!!!

Ever since, I understandably cannot stand the stuff!

Reply

I’ve been wanting to try out a running skirt, I just am afraid to spend the money on it if I don’t like it!

I like champion bras too! I totally love workout skirts–they are so cute –feminine & fit :)

I do NOT like mayonnaise. SO gross. (sorry).

And yes, I am always in need of new fitness gear. ALWAYS. (My husband disagrees, though). Weird.

Just converted to running skirts & LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. They have to fit right & for me be the right price:-)

Reply

I really need new shoes!! I’ve put too many miles on mine.

Reply

Oh & I just found two at Kohl’s for $12 each…that’s what made me want to try them!

Reply

I love your running top! :) I definitely need some cold weather gear for running and I’m thinking some new running shoes.
I’m gonna say nay on mayonnaise. I’m not sure why, but it kinda creeps me out lol

Reply

I am in need of some more long sleeve and tank tops, and winter gear. I am motivated to make it through the winter running outside, so far I have two pairs of running tights and one pair of “capris” (that go almost to my ankle since I am short), two long sleeve shirts, one thin pullover, and a light jacket that is slightly insulated. I bought some tanks on sale now that summer is almost over. Never tried a running skirt, I’d be willing to try on, they seem cute and fun.

Light on the mayo on some sandwiches and all burgers :)

Reply

I am in need of some good running socks! I have TWO pairs of Smartwool socks that I just wash all the time. Before getting those, I wore some kind of cotton blend–I never got blisters or anything, but after trying out the Smartwool ones, I can’t go back to those other ones.

I also need to find a new favorite running tank–my old favorite has been discontinued!

Reply

I NEED new running shoes…my pumas aren’t cutting it. I’ve heard Brooks’s are great running shoes!

Reply

I look for comfort, and also something that I won’t have to constantly tug back into place. I am soooooooo excited because when I pulled into the driveway this evening after work, there on the doorstep was a big box (not sure why the box was so big) containing my new shoes!! Brooks Pureflow! I went for the black and pink, and love them!!! Can’t wait to get them on my feet, and get going!!! :-)

Reply

I am not so sold on the skirts either. Let me know if you fall in love. I love to wear skirts when I’m not running, but i just don’t get why I need a skirt to run?? Especially since there are shorts underneath?

You look adorable in all of the outfits of course.

Reply

Though it’s hard for me to admit I need nothing.
My must haves – zipper pockets and a super supportive sports bra. The Shock Absorber is awesome – I don’t need to double bra and chafing is non-existent.
I’m not a fan of running skirts.
Heck yes on the mayo.

Reply

I need supportive bras, I’m going to look at the one you mentioned. I like the shirts like you have on but I’ve gotten some great ones from Target ($10 maybe). I like running skirts or shorts. I play tennis too and boy shorts and tennis skirts are about the same (to me) as running skirts. Although I have no idea if companies charge more or less for tennis skirts vs. running skirts.

Love the first pick of Brooke. I need sleep like that!

Reply

I always thought running skirts were cute, but never dared runi n one. I didn’t really want to look like I was trying to look cute. And then I tried that very skirt that you have on and I was a believer. Longer than my running shorts and more comfy! Win – win. But I have recently realized I can’t wear it longer than 13 miles or I will chaff. Badly. Sad day.

I need new running shirts. But I hate them. If I could just find a long one that wasn’t tight, but also didn’t look like I was wearing my husbands shirt, and wasn’t made out of the ‘shiny’ tech tee stuff that really emphasizes my muffin top – then I would be sold. I sound super picky. Let me know if you ever come across such a top!

A good sports bra when nursing is crucial. It’s probably also the ONLY time inmy life when I have probably even needed a bra. ;)

I love anything smores. Loathe anything mayonnaise!

Reply

I am in love with skirts – all I run in. I like the Brooks skirts, but the one that I have, I need a smaller size then what I got. I am in need of new sports bras.

Reply

Socks! They are just terrible right now.
Mayo to make egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad…..yes please. Mayo just on the sandwich……not so much.

Reply

I think I’m good on running clothes, but am in need of a better hydration system. Debating whether to camelbak it or get the water bottles for the waist or get a hand held bottle…..

Requirements for running clothes, sleek, comfortable, supportive and affordable :)

Never tried a running skirt…. you say there are boyshorts attached/under it?

Mayo…….nay….except in tuna salad or deviled eggs. other than that, it’s definetly nay.

And now I want a smore crossaint. Brilliant!!

Reply

I bought my first running skirt a few months ago and love it! It’s a Nike skirt. The shorts ride up a bit and I occasionally find myself reaching up under there to pull them down in a very lady like fashion, of course.

Question to all you runners out there: What headband do you use to keep your hair/bangs/fly aways back while running?? I’ve been using Sweaty Bands and really like them, until I washed them. I hand washed them, as instructed, and they stretched out and no longer serve a purpose. Any other recommendations?

Reply

I use lululemon’s slipless headband. I’ve never been able to wear any other headbands because they always slip off. And these I have always been able to throw in the washing machine on delicate and air dry and they hold up great! http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/women-headbands-and-hats/Slipless-Headband-32534?cc=7504&skuId=3438155&catId=uswwearit8

I am going to be in need of shoes soon. But I just got new capri’s.
I look for capri’s mostly. And cheap. I am HARD on clothes.
I have run in tennis skirts which are about the same thing. They are so-so, but tend to ride up. So I am curious about that grip hem.
Mayo in ranch dressing is good. Mayo on a sandwich is so-so.

Nay on the mayo — I’m a mustard fan!!
Definitely in need of some cold weather running gear. From head to toe. I realize that this task is incredibly daunting and have been putting it off citing that I want to “save up” first … As for what I look for — hot pink and comfort, comfort, comfort!!
I don’t know how I would feel about a running skirt. It’s really not my thing, but I would give it a shot.

Reply

I’m so glad you did those running apparel reviews. I just found out I’m pregnant (first!) and my sports bra has been chaffing so bad. So I’m going to have to get a new one asap since I’m training for a half. It’s so weird how your skin gets so sensitive basically overnight. When I look for new running gear I look for comfort, what looks and feels like it’s least likely to chafe and if it will wick sweat. I’ve never worn a running skirt but have considering trying it. My only hang up is, does it feel weird have something run across your thighs like that? Nay to mayo but YAY to Miracle Whip! :)

Reply

I get serious sports bra chafing on long runs (especially the humid ones during a TX summer) and need support so I will definitely look into this bra! Champion is actually the best brand I have found, their seamless stuff works really well.

Reply

Mayonnaise? Nay.
Running shoes? Yay! I found that I can prevent ITB issues when my shoes are in good condition.

Are you SURE that you had a baby a month ago?! GIRL you look AMAZING! & the outfit is cute…especially with the purple shoes ;)
Looks like little Miss Brooke wants a bite of the ice cream- her little mouth is open…hoping some will drop in :)
Can’t wait to share my afternoons with my little lady- I hope we have similar afternoons to you & Brooke!!

I’ve never worn a running skirt before. I dont even run in shorts. I do however need some new capris. I’m really excited that they are wearing out because it means I have a valid reason to buy more. Yay.

Reply

I’m in need of everything lol I only have one bra, and two shorts, and multiple shirts, so I guess I don’t need shirts lol

I look for comfort, that is all.

I have never wore a running skirt, and never will haha I just dont like skirts

Depends on my mood, sometimes I just hate its guts, but then other times I can’t get enough lol

Reply

My favorite piece of running attire are running capris. Don’t get me wrong, during these ridiculously hot days of summer in TX (and yes, it’s still summer down here and no where near fall) I wear the heck out of my shorts but I absolutely love when it gets cool enough for capris. And the only criteria is that they not feel like they are constantly falling down. Nothing’s more annoying while you’re running than having to keep pulling your pants up. :)

Reply

The running skirt looks good on you! I’d love to get a running skirt but have yet to find a nice one for my petite frame. They always look too long on me.
What I need now are some nice running tops in summer colours.

Reply

Now that you’re living in an apartment and have limited space, please feel free to pass along any of those awesome clothes you don’t have room for anymore! ;-)

I totally will:) hope you are having a great day deb!

Reply

I just tried a skirt a few weeks ago and really liked it. I still love UA’s running shorts…they don’t ride up me like the tempo’s do. For tops, I love racerback tanks and since I have no boobs…I just usually buy cheap ones like the Road Runner cami bra or Nike pro ones when they go on sale. I love my Brooks boy shorts bc they have the gripper and don’t ride up. Glad you finally got to try out your new clothes! :)

Reply

i NEED new workout clothes, like, ALL the time!! I’m one away from having a different sports bra for every day of the week :) this makes me think I need one more, and makes my husband think I’m set, since I always have a rest day anyway. pffft.

Reply

I finally bought a good sports bra today, and I’m so pumped. They’re so expensive, and I’m so cheap. So, I usually just layer the ones I already have. When I buy running clothes, I always make sure it’s comfortable, affordable, and fun! Okay, the fun isn’t as important, but it definitely is way more exciting. I love bright running clothes.

Reply

was the mesh top see through at all? I’m not overly modest, but I don’t really feel like showing everyone my belly button while I run ;).
I just bought the target brand c9 loose running tops. They are awesome! And reasonably priced.
I tend to like my running tops loose so that they don’t ride up and I can’t stand super high necklines. I feel like they are choking me!
I used to think that I hated mayo, but I think that I like it now. That also happened to me with french fries, cookies and creme hersheys, and popcorn. It’s a shame, because I used to be healthier when I was more picky!

Reply

I hate American mayo & thought I would never ever love mayo… but Japanese mayo is so good! It’s a little sweeter & is a delicious ingredient for egg salad :)

Reply

I was really worried it would be see through too but it wasn’t! Maybe if I was wearing a really small size and making it stretch more it would be though:)

Reply

The shirt does look a bit ‘boxy’ to me… but I love the color! Your blog is so light-hearted & refreshing that I love reading it daily… but I do have to ask you a serious question. With all the sugar that you eat… do you ever worry about diabetes or the eating habits you might be passing on to Brooke? Not to say it is all bad because you certainly eat your fair share of fruits & veggies… but there is also a lot of sugary treats. Maybe you are still young. When I was in my 20s I didn’t give a monkey’s ass about my diet. Once I hit 30… getting cancer early (breast cancer runs in my family) or diabetes became very real possibilities. While I still indulge every now & again… I try to be more careful about the amount of sugar I consume. Have these thoughts ever crossed your mind?

Hi!
I love strawberry ice cream. On my birthday I always have strawberry cake and strawberry ice cream. Its a tradition.

I’ve never wore a running skirt. I think it would be great to run in though. I’m very picky about running socks. They must be good b/c my feet sweat do much.

Random question: What do you normally eat for breakfast? It is the same most days? Do you run before or after you eat breakfast? Just curious :)

Reply

I have zero preference with running gear, I basically workout/run in all of my old clothes… basically I look slightly homeless when I hit up a workout but I figure if i’m going to sweat in them then I dont want to spend a bunch of money on them…
I am a no mayo gal, I can honestly say I have never liked it and always always opted for mustard, I am a big mustard girl and think it goes great on/in everything!

Reply

LOVE mayo! I also like that running skirt a lot…sidenote: I cannot believe you just had a baby. You look amazing!

Reply

Running clothes are one of the best reasons to run!! I don’t think I could ever have enough, but lately haven’t allowed myself to buy anything new until I reach new running goals. I love the skirt, adorable, but haven’t tried one myself yet.

Reply

Socks! I run in only 2 different pairs, its bad. I’m just too cheap to buy more.

Reply

We’re twins! Except that you are about a foot taller than I am. I have the skirt and the shoes, and I have a four month old daughter and a running addiction. The skirt is especially nice for me right now because the shorts make sure my legs do not touch while running. Pre-baby this was not a problem, but alas…
I would suggest trying moving comfort fiona, jubralee, or rebound racer as well, because the adjustable straps make it a perfect nursing bra. I can feed the baby right before or after a long run without changing clothes.
Way to go on five miles! You will be back to marathons in no time.

Reply

You are welcome, my dear! And I must admit I squealed a bit when you said ‘friend’ lol!!! ;-)

Reply

I always need more of everything running related :P I’m thinking another pair of running shoes are the next thing I want to get (mainly because lululemon is too expensive to even think about getting anything from!)

I like what you said about not having to pull that shirt up because you’re so right with other ones – I totally always have to pull mine up!! I guess it doesn’t help when I’m constantly pulling it down, either – which is a qualification for my running tops: long!

I chose napping over running today – oops! Gotta love the third trimester ;)

Reply

Let’s see, I have a nine week old. I need everything. I just bought new shoes (Brooks). I have one pr of shorts. I bought a bra, but we will serif it works. I generally don’t run while nursing because my A/B cup becomes a D cup.

Reply

It may just be my iPad but I can’t see any pictures on this post. Bummer!

I absolutely love your running shoes! So pretty and purple. And also, you are terrible for reminding me that I didn’t have s’mores all summer and that I can’t eat some this very second =P

Love that running outfit on you. Glad you’re getting plenty of sleep and jealous that running 5 miles right after giving birth is nbd to you. I’m trying to get my endurance back and it’s tough! I love egg salad sandwiches, had one the other day. I’ll have to try that sports bra, I paid good money to ‘need more support’, lol. Xo, Jessica

Reply

Wow, congratulations for getting back to running 5 miles already, you’re incredible. I love that running skirt – I have a running skirt on my Christmas list but need to decide which one!! I also need some capris for winter running…hurrah, an opportunity to buy.

Reply

In desperate need of a new running jacket! We get super cold weather in the winter and my old one is 3 years old and is falling apart. Why r running clothes so expensive?

I mainly look for comfort in my tops and to make sure there is no spots that will chafe or ride up. And I love capris! I would never wear a running skirt as I don’t even own a normal skirt. Not for me.
I’m more of a miracle whip girl but mayo is good on some things.

Reply

Thanks for the great review. I recently bought a skirt at the last race expo I was at. It was made of “bamboo material” (?) . Wicking material, etc. it was super cute but I wish the boy short underneath was longer because it rode up just enough to make my thighs rub!!! What the heck? Totally not acceptable. I can only wear in very short runs. Makes me nervous to try another but maybe I’ll try these. Thanks!

Reply

Love that top! It’s so hard for me to find a top that isn’t showing all the goods but is still breathable enough that I don’t feel like I’m dying of heat.

And girl, you are looking amazing!

Running clothes are my new obsession! Can’t have enough! I love my running skirt and just bought a second one! I am needing some new sports bras, but why are they so expensive?! Also need some more Dryfit socks, really makes a difference when you run with them! PS I find it amazing that you ran 5 miles so soon after having a baby! :)

Omg, I am on the perpetual search for a good sports bra. I am pretty, ahem, well endowed and haven’t found a bra that can do the job on its own. I have had a few Champions in the past so I will have to check this one out!
I love anything neon when running. The brighter the better! But I’m still on the fence about the running skirts…

I’m pretty sure I will never wear a skirt to run unless it’s part of a costume or something.

I’m so excited you’re running again. You must be ecstatic.

I love my running skirt with the silicone strip at the bottom of the under shorts!! I like to feel girly/sexy, so I feel like it’s the best of both worlds while running!

Aaack! S’mores croissants??? Must try. Adding ingredients to my list now :) BTW, Janae, I finally made the cookies and, well, they are pretty delicious. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I’ve been eyeing the Brooks skort for a while now, mainly because of the grippers on the shorts and the hidden snack pocket :) I’ve had a Nike one for a while now that I do like, but the one from Brooks seems to be one notch up.
