Beating Boredom on the Treadmill

Self-portrait taken while running and trying to wake up (Brooke decided she wanted to hang out together 5 times last night) all at the same time (I don’t recommend trying to multitask all of those things because I may have tripped seconds after and almost crashed to my treadmill death).  If you want pointers on how to create awesome hair horns just email me.

This morning I had to wear my jacket on the treadmill for the first 2 miles because it was kind of cold?  It felt weird wearing a jacket on the treadmill because usually I am sweating bullets and taking layers off on that thing.

I did 8 miles today averaging around 8:00.  My biggest advice to beat treadmill boredom is to play around with the pace and incline.  Every minute I change the pace and my favorite thing is to start at a base number and increase up .1 mph every minutes and once you reach your max start back down at your base again and see if you can beat it the next time around.

I have the taste buds of a 6 year old because all I wanted for lunch was a grilled pb/jelly/banana sandwich.  You have to try this, the pb gets melty plus it gives you an excuse to add butter to your pb and j because you are grilling it.

I have no idea how only one side of my sandwich got cooked but either way it was delicious.  Keep in mind that this is a dinner plate… it was a ginormous sandwich.

HELLO TABOULI.  It has been way too long since I made this stuff.  I have a girls night dinner party today and I am bringing this heavenly stuff.  This is my all time favorite thing to put on top of my salads so I might have to make another batch.

The return of an old snack occurred today.  I lived off of my pretzel and string cheese addiction during my first trimester of pregnancy, I finally remembered it today and there is no turning back.

It might be time to paint my nails again but hopefully half painted nails will just come in style soon.

Hi
Thanks so much for the boredom tips. I can run forever outside but often cut my treadmill run short out of boredom. I think teadmill running is more of a mind game…always fun!! Heh heh
Thanks Janae

Lunch looked yummy…haven’t had PB and banana in years….mmmm:)

aww love the pic of Billy and Brooke- so sweet :)

I live in the D.C. area- and it’s definitely chilly in the mornings and evenings- I hate it cause I have to decide if I want to freeze for the 1st few miles or be too hot etc..

Oh gosh.. I really hate the treadmill- It feels so much harder to me and I don’t know why. But when I do use one I change up the pace also to keep from going nuts.

Fave snack has been either chocolate rice cakes w/ cream cheese or PB or pretzel crisps.

Reply

I’m so envious that you need a jacket. I go running at 5am and it’s already 74 degrees and 6,000,000% humidity. *sigh*

Reply

Bizarrely, I’ve started munching on raw carrots. I can eat several a day!

Reply

8 miles.. dayum.. girl. Post pregnancy that is awesome!!!! and you have officially had a longer run then me and I am running a marathon on sat…
Dayum.
wish me luck..

Reply

Ahhhhhh I am so so excited for you! You are going to rock it and I want to hear all about it!

Reply

Cute photos :) lol
My favorite snack is a chopped apple in greek yogurt with chia seeds and cinnamon. I love wearing jackets year ’round, even when I lived in Texas. But I’m in Michigan now so I have a reason to wear jackets, yay! I find that the best way to beat boredom on the treadmill is to people watch. I once saw a lady do a ‘work out’ on the elliptical without ever pushing start haha

Reply

I second the people watching!! I started to laugh so hard at the part about the lady doing a work out on the elliptical without pushing start! That is too darn funny!

Reply

No start?!? That is awesome!

Reply

I love that treadmill idea. SO doing it when I can get on one next!!I’m really hoping my pace will be alright after I do give birth if I don’t get to run much in these next 8 weeks!! I really wish my hubby would get me a treadmill too haha…as reward for making it through the next week 8?? haha

Reply

She really is about the cutest baby!
Fruit.
Not at all jacket weather.
I play with the speed. Do ladders up and down. But fortunately, I haven’t had to be on the treadmill since early August.
The Kidless Kronicles

Reply

um I must also have the tastebuds of a 6 year old because that sandwich looks amazing. I need to buy some jelly…

Reply

I like the idea of changing the pace every minute. I will have to try that. I don’t suppose you have any tips on how to beat boredom at work, besides by reading your blog:)

Reply

Hahah bring lots of fun snacks that keep you entertained the whole day!

Reply

Since I run on the treadmill all the time I change the pace and/or incline often, usually in 2 minute increments. Time goes by so much more quickly.
It’s still shorts and t-shirt weather in Texas but I no longer start sweating before I workout so that’s a good thing. The weather will be amazing here for the next 9 months.

Reply

Favorite snack right now is Cheezits and Oranges..must be eaten together though. I think I just keep wearing jackets lately because I want it to be jacket weather, but I end up getting warm pretty quickly. My office at work is freezing always, so I get to wear a jacket there! I have a hard time on the treadmill, my desire is to get better at it! I get bored way to fast and burnt out!

Btw, that pic of B and baby is soooooooo sweet. Daddies and their babies is the cutest thing to see.

Reply

-My favorite snack right now is celery with peanut butter.
-I usually listen to podcast to beat boredom on the treadmill.
-I have to wear a jacket in the morning but by the afternoon its 80 degrees outside. Crazy Utah weather!
Brooke is quite possibly the cutest little girl I’ve ever seen!

Reply

yes! recently found that podcasts are the cure to dreadmill boredom! joe rogan, folks, joe rogan… try him!

Reply

My favorite snacks are toast with peanut butter, mashed banana and honey drizzled over. Also I dig smearing nutella right onto a banana. Plus taking a tortilla and putting butter and cinnamon sugar on it and rolling it up.

Now I’m hungry.

Reply

I hate the treadmill but sometimes it’s a must but I run with music if I have to and then I plan photo shoots in my head.

Favorite snack is plain chobani with a little honey and cinnamon or maybe granny smith apples and Whole Foods 365 creamy PB. Oh but my mom sent me Marionberry (the yummiest) jam from home (Seattle) and I put that in the yogurt too. So good.

It’s funny, I live maybe 30 mins north of you on the peninsula and I saw people in jeans and jackets and Ugg boots today at Target. It was sunny and in the mid 60s at that point in the morning, it’s 68 or something now. “Cold” here is so subjective.

Reply

That is such a presh pic of Billy and Brooke.

Cheese slices and wheat thins.

Nope. It’s perfect weather here in Houston. Usually ranging from the 70-90s with low humidity!

Watching TV. or I’ll make my friend walk on the one next to me and talk to me.

Reply

tortilla with almond butter then sliced banana and honey drizzle on top :) best thing ever. funny thing is i have been wanting to try the grilled peanut butter sandwich for a while and just never have. no idea why i haven’t lol

same here!! only in the mornings and nights, i’m just smart and have wet hair in the morning so i’m warm.

i watch tv lol mosrly reruns, but those are the best!!

Reply

I definitely keep switching things up on the treadmill. I’m a fan of pyramids — both with speed and incline (or both together if I’m feeling especially spry that day!)
I was all about the Teddy Grahams until I found out that I needed to go gluten-free, still trying to find a great replacement!! But Food Should Taste Good chips (the chocolate kind) are awesome — need to go buy some more soon!

Reply

You better go get some more! I want to try your speed and incline pyramid, that sounds killer!

Reply

That grilled pb/jelly/banana sandwich is making me hungry!

My absolute favorite snack is a toasted english muffin with havarti cheese…yumm!

Reply

That sounds amazing! I need to try that!

Reply

Nothing sweeter than a man with a baby. Awwr :D

Treadmills bore me to tears. I find the only way I can really stay on one for any period of time is if I have someone with me to talk to… otherwise I can only last about 5 minutes. And holy moly is it ever jacket weather here. It’s alright during the day, but the mornings and evenings are freezing! I don’t mind, though, because jackets, boots, scarves, and chunky sweaters are my favorite kind of clothes :D

Reply

Those are totally my favorite types of clothes too so I completely agree with you!

Reply

what the treadmill…I fell a year ago while on a treadmill and broke my jaw. Ended up being wired shut for six weeks. Not a fun way to spend summer.

Reply

Oh my goodness! Your poor thing! That must have been so awful!

Reply

not fun for sure…hardest part was a summer without the crunch of watermelon…it just not the same when juiced.

Reply

my favourite snack right now is banana soft serve with chocolate protein powder and a little peanut butter, I can’t get enough! it always leaves me super cold so I have to chase it with a big mug of tea but its definitely worth it
Its not jacket weather quite yet… well maybe early early and late late but during the day its still nice and warm (in Vancouver, BC)
when i’m on the treadmill and super board I always throw in some random intervals to take my mind off of the clock, I hate it but it works every time.

Reply

Agreed! Intervals work every time without fail plus they kick our trash:)

Reply

OoOoOh if you have the taste-buds of a 6 year old then maybe you have the mind of a 6 year old too (I know I do)!! In which case I stumbled upon this amazing item and immediately thought of you and your blog (which I read every day because it is perfect and hilarious……… and because Brooke is a little gem)

Soooooooooo I hope you are as amused by it as I was: http://laughingsquid.com/cereal-light-a-lamp-that-looks-like-a-big-bowl-of-fruit-loops-milk/

:)

Reply

I need that light! They need to make a fmw one though:)

Reply

Agreed, double butter is the bomb. My fave snack at present is popcorn!! Nomnom

Reply

Brooke is just too precious. Her cheeks look so squishable!

My favorite snack right now is any type of latte. Caffeine + milk = amazing afternoon pick me up.

Reply

Southern California so no jackets required here!!

Does your treadmill bother your apartment neighbors? Just wondering if it’s less/more noisy since it’s out on the porch.

Reply

Beauty of s. Cali! They say they can’t hear it! I think they are gone usually when I use it:)

Reply

My husband hooked up our travel DVD player to the top of the treadmill. I watched the Twilight series! Once the snow flies I’ll probably start Friday Night Lights. I can’t believe I haven’t seen that show!

Reply

You are going to love that show! It is incredible!

Reply

yessss. i want to be Tami Taylor for Halloween, but also kind of always. FNL rules.

Reply

The mornings are definitely chilly, but it’s still getting into the mid-80s the afternoon. Cooler weather can’t come fast enough!

Reply

She is so precious! Oh my goodness, I just look seeing pictures of Brook!

Favorite snack right now … potato chips drenched in vinegar. Don’t judge me. ;)

Reply

I’m in Boston and it was 45 when I went running this morning — I almost had to break out the gloves!

Billy and Brooke are way too cute. I love how her cheeks are really plumping up. Great job feeding her, mom!!

My fave snack is sharp cheese between two of those square pretzels. And my 6 year old daughter loves that too!

Reply

I can’t handle the treadmill. I went on a treadmill the other day for the first time since February. I lasted a mile before I HAD to get off. I almost died of boredom. I am just going to have to suck it up and run in the snow this winter. I will probably resort to a treadmill when I have kids but until then it is outdoors only for me.

Reply

Definitely jacket in the morning and evenings here too but the afternoon is pretty toasty still. Wicked cute picture of Brooke and Billy :) And I must say I love how you always have a side of veggies and/or fruit with like every meal. So well balanced!

Reply

She’s getting chunky – so cute!!!

I sometimes wear a hoodie in the fall (and hoodie + jacket + another layer in the winter) and I will probably need to as it’s starting to get colder in Canada!

Reply

I also love to play around with the incline and speed (but more on the speed). If you listen to music, you can bump up to a near-sprint every time it’s the chorus of a song, then go to a comfortable pace when it’s everything else. The choruses will always seem sooooo long, haha.

Reply

Love that idea! I will so be doing that! Thanks Michelle!

Reply

I like doing planned out interval runs on the treadmill to beat boredom. Whenever I try to do a treadmill run for mileage, I end up dying–of boredom, that is. I agree that changing the pace and incline really helps. Following someone else’s plan helps me because it usually gives me a challenge that I wouldn’t normally do myself.

Reply

I cannot run on the treadmill for the life of me! We got the phil and teds stroller and I have been using it with Brooklyn (my 3 month old!) since she was born…it lies flat until they have head control! I love it! I am up to 9 miles now running and feel back to myself…funny how running defines how we feel!!

Reply

Totally used your treadmill trick this evening and had an awesome run! Love when my legs surprise me with what they can do :)

Reply

That is so so awesome!!! Way to go on a killer workout!!!

Reply

Favorite snack right now is cut up apples and grapes with Greek yogurt and a packet of maple brown sugar instant oatmeal on top. Don’t cook the oatmeal! So good!

Reply

That sounds incredible! I will be trying that! Thanks!!!

Reply

Grapes and string cheese is my go-to snack right now! It never gets old, sometimes I throw in a pickle…or two into snack time.

No jackets yet, but I’m waiting! Its still summer in Savannah, no fall temps yet. So bummed!

Reply

-Since it’s getting to be apple season in these parts, my consumption of apples and peanut butter is increasing. The Honeycrisp apples and Honey roasted peanut butter from this one orchard are TO DIE FOR. But then again, I’m kind of loving my Trader Joe’s Vanilla nonfat greek yogurt with granola too.
-Definitely jacket weather in the morning and evenings around here. We are having a fabulous Indian Summer so the days have been nice and warm, and the nights crisp and cool.
-I’m a total fair-weather runner, so once the weather turns bad I’ll be stuck on the treadmill (which is probably why I don’t run much over the winter). So either I’m going to have to invest in some cold weather gear, or figure out a way to suffer the treadmill for more than 20 minutes.

Reply

I totally use those things to beat boredom. Sometimes I play games too–like I’ll stay at ONE speed for .2 miles or something, and then every .2 I change speeds.

It’s a tad bit chilly here in the mornings too! crazy.

Reply

I LOVE my treadmill. I run on it everyday. In fact, I hate running outside. I did 15 miles on it a couple of weekends ago. How do I beat the boredom? I watch tv shows that I don’t have time to watch otherwise b/c I’m either chasing my two kids around or cleaning up their messes once they are in bed. Totally motivates me to get out of bed.
Totally impressed about your 8 miles, seriously awesome!

Reply

reading your blog got me stuck on pretzels and cheese but right now I am stuck on the little round cheeses… so good! We finally had a day under 80 today! I am praying to be able to wear a jacket soon!

Reply

i do the same thing with the tready…it’s all about messing with the dials to break the chunks of time down to the shortest amounts so u really only ‘think’ u’re running for 5 min’s. lol. i also play the game where i try not to look at the screen for as long as i can, so then when i do look it’s like, “WOW!! a whole two miles passed!” then i try to not look again and beat how long i lasted without peeking earlier. sooo inventive these little mind games, right?! jk.

Reply

I have been downing Ritz crackers and string cheese lately as well as Captain Crunch, but I must say your blog does make me crave FMW:) Love the treadmill tips, and I loved your post about running to just enjoy and love running. Tonight I went on a nice trail run and didn’t worry about times at all. Brooke looks darling and that picture made her cheeks look chubbier…so cute!!

Reply

I have to alternate the speed or incline too otherwise I’d lose my mind on the treadmill! Love that pic of B squared :)

Reply

I love when baby cheeks start plumping up! Doesn’t it make you proud of all those feedings?

Awesome on the run. I would love to run even one or two miles at 8 minutes. One day…

Reply

I agree Lindsay – totally makes me proud of feedings when I see my little girls cheeks and thighs filling out. Love it.

Reply

Hi! Are you running the Firefly Run in San Jose?

When is it?

It’s so not jacket weather. I wish. It’s still been in the 90s here. Last picture- PRECIOUS! Um and yeah, you need a cool sandwich maker for those sandwiches. Make the best ones ever! :)

Reply

I am SOOOOO glad to have found someone else that eats grilled pb&J!!! My hubby thinks I’m a freak, but it’s sooo yummy! For boredom on the treadmill, it’s music all the way…even if it’s my daughters’ princess sing-along video!

Reply

Yum, that sandwich looks delish. All sandwiches taste better grilled, its a fact. I can’t get enough of apples and peanut butter right now. And I love watching bad reality tv while I’m on the treadmill. Nothing like Real Housewives yelling at eachother to get me through a boring treadmill run.

Reply

Daddy/daughter pictures are the best. My favs for sure these days!

I have never made or actually tasted Tabouli. Is it easy to make?

Oh and grilling your PBJ banana sandwich is genius. Pure genius.

Reply

It’s glorious weather here. I could wear a jacket or a long sleeve and be comfortable. I love it so much.

On the treadmill, I tend to just go one speed so I can zone out and watch trashy tv. That’s my favorite :)

Reply

it is so obvious how much he loves her

Reply

Man, I think I liked you more when you were pregnant and ran more at my pace. Okay, that’s a lie, I still like you a lot.

I wore a jacket today for the first time (in SLC) — but mostly because it’s 50 degrees in my office. Although, it has been chilly mornings and evenings, which I LOVE!

Reply

Have you ever tried grilling a sandwhich with peanut butter, honey, and banana’s on it?!?! It’s amazing.

Reply

That sounds incredible! I will be trying that! Thank you!

Reply

Music is all I need to beat my boredom on the treadmill. Put on a good song and I am gone! It’s been fun reading through the comments to see what other people do. Love the discussion on here!

Reply

oh my goodness! No, it doesn’t get any cuter than that!

Reply

I hooked up a laptop in front of my treadmill and watch tv shows on hulu. LOVE it!! Makes the treadmill run so much better!

Reply

Yum! Sometimes I do something similar but with the Trader Joe’s low-carb tortillas and wrap the pb and banana in it!

Reply

I love your idea for beating treadmill boredom – I do something kind of similar but it’s more sporatic, so I think I will start incorporating your wisdom into my workout! Also, I gotta say, that PB&J sandwich looks like the most delicious thing in the entire world! I think I know what I will be making for lunch today!

When we think of treadmill running, most of us instinctively look down on it as a second-class form of running. But there are times weather, travel or other circumstances will have even the strongest opponent to the treadmill line up and start pushing the buttons for a workout.
